Maintaining our land, for future generations...

farm tour 2022 tallahassee

Orchard Pond is a diverse, family-owned, organic farm located in the Red Hills Region of Tallahassee, Florida.  Good food and caring for the land are traditions that have been passed down for generations in our families.  This inspires our dedication to producing the highest quality foods using sustainable practices.

We started our organic garden in 2008 when our first child was 6 months old.  Having access to all of that wonderful produce to feed our children from an early age is something we will always be grateful for.  Since then, thanks to the culmination of lots of hard work and determination of many great people, our garden has expanded to feed many more families.  Orchard Pond produce can be found at local restaurants , farmers markets, grocery stores , our CSA , and through the Red Hills Online Market .

Our on-farm commercial kitchen was added in 2011.  What started out as a facility for bottling honey, quickly became a test kitchen for trying out new recipes incorporating all of the beautiful produce coming straight from the field.  Now, Orchard Pond Pesto and Granola can be found in stores  throughout the state of Florida. Be on the lookout for new products coming soon!

Farm Tour 2022: A free family weekend • October 15-16

farm tour 2022 tallahassee

The 15th Annual Farm Tour takes place on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16. It features 40 farms across North Florida and South Georgia, with dozens of vendors. Many stops on the tour are just down the road in Jefferson and Madison counties. Last year, more than 15,000 people hit the road to see a wide range of agricultural operations in our area. The 2022 tour promises to inspire just as many people to get out to discover or revisit the people and places that produce our food. “Come meet our local farmers, ranchers and growers,” says event coordinator Majken Peterzen, director of Millstone Institute of Preservation, which hosts the Farm Tour. “They love for you to visit – to see how they do what they do! Many of the sites will have produce or products for sale or sample. Workshops and demonstrations abound. It's just about the best weekend of the year!” Whether you're a consumer getting out to appreciate where your food comes from, a fellow farmer interested in what other farms are up to, or someone with an itch to scratch the earth and get things growing yourself – there's something for everyone on the Farm Tour. There is no charge for visiting the farms, and because the tour is self-guided, people can choose sites that interest them and visit them in any order they like during the tour times. Be sure to get a tour guidebook. Guest Article for the Tallahassee Democrat

October 14, 2022, Release for the Tallahassee Democrat

Fall is upon us, and that means it is farm tour season!

The 15th Annual Farm Tour is on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, 2022. Farmers and producers in 12 counties in North Central Florida and South-Central Georgia will be open to showcase their various farming endeavors. It is a free family weekend of learning, exploration, and fun.

The Farm Tour has been organized and hosted by Millstone Institute of Preservation since 2016. It gives the community the chance to explore local producers in our area and become familiar with the farmers that make up our diverse local food system.

There is much to explore during the 15th Annual Farm Tour, including heritage breed livestock. Photo by Rachel Mathes.

There are 40 farms, ranches, farm-to-table restaurants, markets, vendors, and gardens (including the Leon County “VegHeadz” Demonstration Garden on Saturday!) participating in this year’s Farm Tour, some of which have never participated in the past.

The sites span nearly 140 miles east to west, from Greenville, Florida, to Chipley, Florida, and about 80 miles north to south, from Whigham, Georgia, to Crawfordville, Florida.

Each farm is open to the public at no cost, providing the opportunity for participants to learn the importance of supporting local agriculture and how they can do so.

There are many different types of farms to explore, including seeing a multitude of processes and demonstrations firsthand, such as honey harvesting, cow and goat milking, sawmill operating, bamboo extracting, horse grooming, compost turning, flower arranging, seed saving, wine manufacturing, sausage creating, satsuma juicing, cheese making, kombucha brewing, and much more.

You can also sample and purchase local products at many farm tour sites, including local honey, beeswax and honey products, local eggs, homemade breads, fresh veggies, various locally produced meats (bring a cooler!), pumpkins, vegetable seedlings, kombucha, muscadine wines, handmade soaps, fruit trees, cookbooks, and more. Many locations will also be serving food for sale, such as falafel and hummus; baked goods; beef, bacon, and pork burgers; ice cream and coffee; satsuma slushes, cookies, jellies, and syrups; and much more.

The Farm Tour Guide includes descriptions and directions to all the farm tour sites. A downloadable version of the Farm Tour Guide is available on the UF/IFAS Leon County Extension Facebook Page .

See you down on the farm!

Molly Jameson is the Sustainable Agriculture and Community Food Systems Extension Agent with UF/IFAS Extension Leon County, an Equal Opportunity Institution. For gardening questions, email the extension office at [email protected] .

Touring our local farms

farm tour 2022 tallahassee

Many of us are patrons of the wonderful farmers’ markets in town or order from the Red Hills Small Farm Alliance online market, but actually visiting these local farms is a special opportunity that gives us all a better idea of the hard work and dedication it takes to work the land or make your own products.

farm tour 2022 tallahassee

I’m hoping lots of you took advantage of that opportunity this weekend during the 12th Annual Farm Tour, with more than 30 participating farms and nurseries in North Central Florida and South Central Georgia.

My husband and I visited a few destinations though there were so many that we didn’t get to see.

farm tour 2022 tallahassee

We learned quite a bit at each place we visited. Our stops included the Leon County Extension Service (UF/IFAS) Demonstration Garden where we tried to soak up the great info from the volunteers sharing tips and samples of items like aji dulce peppers, lettuce and spinach.

farm tour 2022 tallahassee

Janis Piotrowski, master gardener and volunteer at the extension service, dug up some jerusalem artichokes, small tubers that add crunch to dishes.

farm tour 2022 tallahassee

Piotrowski gave us some of the artichokes to take home to plant. We saved a few to slice and add to our salad Sunday night.

Volunteers also gave us roselle hibiscus plants and seeds with directions for making tea and jam, We tried a cup of the tea at the extension service and it was so refreshing, just delightful.  Recipe below.

If you’re interested in learning more about gardening, the service offers master gardening classes among their other services. The agency is at 615 Paul Russell Road; 850-606-5200.

Millstone Plantation, which hosted the event, is a lovely farmstead in the north end of Tallahassee near Bradfordville. It was once a part of the Conrad family farm but it’s been set aside as a nonprofit offering classes and promoting sustainability. There we saw alpacas, goats, horses and donkeys.

Vendors included bee farmers selling honey, “Oyster Mom” Deborah Keller and blacksmith John Pfund demonstrating his craft.

We wound up at Just Fruits & Exotics, at 30 Saint Francis Street in Crawfordville, which grows a wide variety of edible plants and trees including the pomegranate, Asian pear and a Sugar Cane Jujube Tree. I can’t seem to keep basil alive but the friendly staff introduced me to a heartier variety than the plant I buy at Publix and gave me directions for its care — keeping fingers crossed.

I’d love to hear about your visits during the farm tour. If you didn’t get to go, or like me, missed a bunch, many farms invite visitors, usually by appointment but get in touch. Y

Here’s info on our farmers’ markets — tallahasseetable.com/tallahassee-table-calendar-of-events/ — or go to the Red Hills Small Farm Alliance Online Market, where you can find dozens of local produce, meats, bread, honey, plants and other goods.

FYI, the online market has recently changed its main distribution hub to 1940 N Monroe St Suite #76 (not far from the old location), between Tallahassee Ballet and Anytime Fitness just around the corner of the Northwood Center in what was formerly What Café.

Here’s the recipe for the drink made from the roselle or Jamaican Sorrel plant. It makes about 12 concentrated cups.

farm tour 2022 tallahassee

Ingredients: About 3 cups fresh or frozen roselle calyxes (outside petals), seeds removed. (I used 1 1/2 cups and it was plenty strong)

Use any of these: Large 2-inch slice of fresh pineapple peeled and cubed (no need to core it) or a small can of pineapple in its own juice. 1 piece of fresh ginger root , peeled and sliced in thin coins for flavor or chopped/grated for stronger flavor. In a pinch use ginger spice (what I did) 1 cinnamon stick 1 orange sliced with rind 3-5 cloves (I used the powder)

To prepare: Bring ingredients to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Cool and let sit in the refrigerator overnight. Strain through cheesecloth or coffee filter. The drink will keep in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks or freeze in one-cup measurements.

To make tea , add 6 cups brewed tea (decaf or regular), 3/8 cup sugar, maple syrup or sugar-free sweetener to taste, 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional) to the roselle drink.

Here’s a list of the locations that were on the farm tour in case you want to learn more about them:

A&B Produce Farm, Apalachee Farms, Arrowhead Beef Farm, Artzi Organic Veggies & Pita Queen (they’re at Lake Ella Wednesday and Saturday), Backwoods Crossing (also a terrific farm-to-table restaurant), Cindale Farms and Southern Craft Creamery (they make the award-winning ice cream), Deep Roots Meat, Earthshine Acres Farm, Frenchtown Heritage Hub & Market, Frenchtown Urban Farm Compost Community, Glendower Farms, Golden Acres Ranch, Handsome Harvest Farm, In the Garden, Johnston’s Old Fashioned Meat Market (they have a doughnut shop and sandwiches, too), Just Fruits & Exotics, Leon County Extension Office Demonstration Garden, Liberty Farms (grows items for Liberty Bar, The Hawthorne and El Cocinero), Millstone Plantation, Monticello Vineyards & Winery at Ladybird Organics, Ocheesee Creamery, Orchard Pond Organics, Paradise Found Farms, Pine Dove Farm, SunBlest Gardens, The Dwellings Community Center, Timber Bamboo and Treehouse Permaculture Center.
