Field Trips

Plan your field trip in three easy steps., 1. learn about the types of school visit experiences .

As the state’s largest classroom for exploring Mississippi’s rich and complex history, the Two Mississippi Museums are the premiere destination for school field trips.

What can I expect from a field trip to the Two Mississippi Museums?

The campus of the Two Mississippi Museums includes both the Museum of Mississippi History  and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum .

Students will experience the full scope of Mississippi history from prehistory to present day and explore themes that are emphasized in the Mississippi Studies courses.

Types of School Tours

Highlights Tours: A guided experience through both the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Approximately two hours of touring, with time spent with Civil Rights Veteran Hezekiah Watkins. (Recommended for first-time visitors.)

Overview: An introduction to the Two Mississippi Museums by a staff member followed by independent exploration time with chaperone guidance. (Recommended for return visits.)

Theme Tour: A guided experience focused on a specific subject with a worksheet and discussion. May be in both museums or just one depending on the subject matter. (Available subjects listed below.)

Virtual Tour: A guided experience focused on a specific subject conducted over Zoom with discussion. May be in both museums or just one depending on the subject matter. (Available subjects listed below.) Virtual tours are only available on Mondays at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, recording of live tour made available upon request.

Before Mississippi was a state, it was the nation’s young frontier. In this session, museum staff will present artifacts and exhibits from within the Museum of Mississippi History that explore the development of the Mississippi Territory. They will examine how its borders changed through wars and treaties, learn about the lives of settlers, soldiers, Native Americans, and enslaved people, and the path to statehood.

Curricular Connections

Fourth Grade: Mississippi Studies and Regions

  • CI.4.1: Describe Mississippi’s entry into statehood.
  • H.4.2.3: Describe reasons for conflicts between Europeans and Native Americans in Mississippi, including differing beliefs regarding land ownership, religion, and culture.

MS.4: Explain the development of the Mississippi Territory and its evolution to statehood.

Mississippi Studies

  • MS.2: Compare and contrast the indigenous cultures in Mississippi and assess their lasting impact on its history and traditions.
  • H.4.6: Compare and contrast between the different Mississippi Native American cultures: Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Natchez.

Between the years 1865 and 1877, the nation tried to rebuild after its bloodiest conflict, the Civil War. During this time, economic systems were restructured, equality was extended to the formerly enslaved, and educational opportunities were broadened. However, due to these progressive reforms, legal and social resistance ensued. In this session museum staff will uncover and evaluate the lasting cultural impact of Reconstruction in Mississippi through the exploration of artifacts and exhibits in the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

  • E.4.3: Identify economic conditions as a result of the Civil War, including the collapse of the economic structure, destruction of the transportation infrastructure, and high casualty rates.
  • CI.4.3: Identify rights and responsibilities as a citizen of your community and state.

Seventh Grade Compacted: US History Exploration to Reconstruction/Civics and the World

  • 7C.15: Analyze the Reconstruction efforts in post-Civil War America.
  • MS.6: Recognize the role of Mississippi during the Civil War and evaluate the effects of Reconstruction within the state.

Students will explore the war's impact on a Mississippian's daily life on the home front, as well as Mississippi soldiers' experiences overseas and returning home. In this session, museum staff will present artifacts and exhibits from within the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

Fourth Grade: Mississippi Studies and Regions

  • H.4.1: Recognize symbols, customs, and celebrations representative of our community, Mississippi and the United States.
  • CR.4.1: Analyze the Civil Rights Movement to determine the social, political, and economic impact on Mississippi.

  • US.7: Examine the nation’s role in World War II and the impacts on domestic affairs.

African American Studies

  • AAS.7: Analyze the conditions and contributions of African Americans during the Great Depression and World War II.

On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court rendered its unanimous decision in the case of Brown v. Board of Education. This decision mandated the integration of public institutions across the country and formally outlawed racial segregation in schools. In this session museum staff will present artifacts and exhibits in the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum exploring Mississippi's long freedom struggle to desegregation by examining the impact of court cases such as Plessy v. Ferguson, Brown v. Board of Education, and Alexander v. Holmes, and the courageous efforts of leaders like Medgar Evers, Clyde Kennard, and James Meredith.

Fourth Grade: Mississippi Studies and Regions

  • MS.8: Evaluate the role of Mississippi in the Civil Rights Movement.

US History: 1877 to Present

  • US.11.3: Explain contributions of individuals and groups to the modern Civil Rights Movement, including: Martin Luther King, Jr., James Meredith, Medgar Evers, Thurgood Marshall, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the civil rights foot soldiers.

In the summer of 1964, local movements grew into a coordinated statewide campaign for freedom that captured the nation’s attention and culminated in a dramatic challenge at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. In this session museum staff will present artifacts, films, and exhibits about the impact of Freedom Summer on voting rights, through the efforts of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), Fannie Lou Hamer, and Council of Federated Organizations (COFO).

Instructional Programs

Instructional classroom programs.

MCM was built with a mission to improve the health and literacy of Mississippi’s children because the two go hand-in-hand. The hands-on programs we offer at MCM involve children in making good choices in a fun and interactive way, which is the best way for them to remember what they’ve learned. Our interactive, multi-disciplinary programs make concepts introduced and developed in the classroom come alive in our thematic galleries. Our programs are based in three focus areas, health, literacy, and STEAM.

All programs are an additional $3.00 per student unless otherwise noted.

MEETING YOUR OBJECTIVES

Connecting to state and national standards in literacy, STEAM, and health is MCM’s specialty. The Education and Programs Department at MCM strives to make each experience fun while providing children with substantive material that enhances the standards that are tested in Mississippi’s assessment programs. Each field trip, outreach program, and professional development opportunity is immersed in educational concepts. Allowing children to make connections to these standards in an informal learning environment reinforces what they are learning in the classroom in a hands-on, tactile way that no child will forget.

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

If you can’t visit MCM or you’ve visited and want to share the experience with more students, our hands-on educational experiences at your school, church, camp, or special event are the perfect solution. Most MCM programs are offered for outreach visits, in addition to our traveling exhibits. Email [email protected] for available programs and pricing.

Fit for Fun

Fit for Fun is a fun-filled, care-free time for our groups to have healthy fun through exercise, dance, music, and other activities. Fit for Fun introduces children to small changes that they can implement now that will make big differences as they grow, including becoming more physically active. Our goal is to play a role in reversing the trend of childhood obesity, one generation at a time – with a benefit of improved behavior and academic performance in school. Sponsored by Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. Appropriate for Pre Kindergarten – 5th graders.

Get Heart Smart

This program is designed to educate children about key facets of heart health, through an innovative and interactive program model. Students will experience the circulatory system like never before—as a blood cell! As the “blood cells” travel through the larger-than-life heart and lungs floor map, students will learn about the anatomy of the heart, its primary functions, and the role the circulatory system plays in overall health. This program will also educate students about life choices that help or harm their hearts. Get Heart Smart is presented by Jackson Heart Foundation. Appropriate for 1st – 5th graders.

Journey of Digestion

Children will take a journey into the digestive system through a hands-on demonstration and activity. Afterward, children can visit our larger-than-life Gastro Climber exhibit in our Healthy Fun gallery to become a food particle, travel through the digestive system, and learn what happens to food after it is swallowed. Appropriate for Kindergarten – 3rd graders.

Get moving to Dr. Seuss as MCM presents a Dr. Seuss themed Fit for Fun program. After reading from a Dr. Seuss favorite, students will get up and get moving with activities based on some of Dr. Seuss’s favorite characters and books, like a green egg race. Fit for Fun is sponsored by Mississippi Baptist Health Systems. Appropriate for Pre Kindergarten – 3rd graders.

Journey to the North Pole

(Only Available in December)

Journey to the North Pole (JNP) offers all guests a ticket to an engaging holiday experience featuring MCM’s popular exhibit. In addition to exploring the Journey to the North Pole exhibit, taking a ride down the Snowflake Slide (students MUST be at least 36” tall for this experience) and visiting the Reindeer Rink for sock skating (students MUST bring socks for this experience), the Journey to the North Pole field trip offers students an exclusive reading of a favorite holiday book and the opportunity to make a holiday ornament to take home.

Farm Bureau Spotlight

This inquiry-based program is designed to educate groups about the broad industry of agriculture, the many agriculture careers available, and how important it is in our day-to-day lives. Programs may feature any of the different aspects of agriculture, such as beekeeping, growing produce, the chemistry of food, veterinary medicine, farming, irrigation, the water cycle, forestry, fishing, and much more. Sponsored by Mississippi Farm Bureau. Appropriate for Kindergarten – 5th graders.

Dive into the world of technology with MCM’s coding program. Designed for groups with varying degrees of familiarity with coding, this program explores the basics behind code and allows children a chance to hone their coding skills with actual robots! Appropriate for Kindergarten – 5th graders.

Explore STEAM concepts in new and exciting ways with MCM’s Rigamajig program. This program, with its Rigamajig set, allows children to use their creativity to build unique objects. Using the design process, it is a fantastic hands-on tool to engage children and help them grow practical building skills with Rigamajig’s nuts and bolts system. Appropriate for Kindergarten – 5th graders.

Blender Bike

This experience combines three favorite activities for children: bike riding, cooking, and making art. Our Blender Bike with spin art attachment allows students to pedal their own spin art in a fun and creative manner, or make a delicious, nutritious treat. For field trip programming, we offer the spin art option, and as outreach, you may opt to do either experience or both. Appropriate for Prekindergarten – 3rd graders.

The Math Curse

This field trip turns the museum into a giant series of word problems. Students will be given a booklet upon their arrival and they must work together throughout the museum to solve word problems using their math skills and concepts like geometry, fractions, and pre-algebra relating mathematical operations to daily life. Appropriate for 2nd – 5th graders. This program is not available as outreach.

A travel guide to the Southern USA

6 Easy Day Trips from Jackson, Mississippi

August 25, 2021 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

Jackson , Mississippi is the Magnolia State ‘s capital with an important legacy with the Civil Rights Movement . But it’s also a good base to explore other parts of the state, especially if you’re traveling the Natchez Trace Parkway . It’s easy to pick up  your rental car  in the city or at the airport and return to your hotel in the evening for these day trips from the city.

Vicksburg

Distance from Jackson: 45 minutes

In less than an hour’s drive from Jackson, travelers are transported to the southernmost point of the Mississippi Delta . Vicksburg sits on the namesake river and has a long legacy in American history. It started as a French settlement in the 1700s before being the site of a Civil War battle.

The best place to learn about the fallen soldiers from the conflict is at the Vicksburg National Military Park , a massive space encompassing both the memorials and an ironside gunboat.  Vicksburg National Cemetery is the final resting place for these soldiers.

The  Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum  is where Coca-Cola was first bottled outside of its home state.  The Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum  tells of the river’s impact on the area. The  Old Court House Museum  has artifacts from the Civil War. Try your luck at the casinos or day trip to the ruins in Port Gibson or the ghost town of Rodney.

Dine out in downtown Vicksburg, including the rooftop eatery  10 South or their sister restaurant ROCA Restaurant & Bar.  The Breakfast Club of Vicksburg  is a go-to for breakfast and brunch while  Goldie’s Trail Bar-B-Que  has pit-style pork featured in countless publications.

Kress: Meridian, Mississippi

Distance from Jackson: 1 hour 20 minutes

Meridian is often overlooked by travelers and was established in 1860 as a railroad hub. Much of the city was rebuilt after General Sherman burned it to the ground. It’s home to a number of museums, including the Jimmie Rodgers Museum , which honors the “father of country music.”

The Mississippi Industrial Heritage Museum focuses on the state’s role in the Industrial Revolution. The Mississippi Children’s Museum has an outpost in Meridian, with interactive and educational exhibits. Set in a former Carnegie Library, the Meridian Museum of Art features the work of artists from Mississippi and the South.

Chow down at one of Meridian’s restaurants. Weidmann’s Restaurant dates back to 1870, a Swiss immigrant, and serves favorites like fried green tomatoes, gumbo, and redfish atop hoppin john. Jean’s is another local staple, with fried chicken and macaroni and cheese.

Greenwood

Distance from Jackson: 1 hour 40 minutes

One of the best spots to stay for exploring the sites of the Mississippi Blues Trail , Greenwood has a charming downtown that was featured in The Help . Viking Cooking School  is one of the top things to do in the town where the stovetop company is based. The classes book up weeks in advance. The  Museum of the Mississippi Delta , providing information on the region’s ecosystem and history.

Detour to the north to the town of Money see the historic maker at  Bryant’s Grocery , where Emmett Till was accused of whistling at a white woman. It’s just one stop along the memorial trail. Just down the street is blues legend  Robert Johnson’s grave .

Lusco’s  is an old-school Italian eatery with private curtained booths that previously had a speakeasy.  Giardina’s Restaurant  at The Alluvian has also been open since the 1930s and has steaks and pasta

Crystal Grill  is another classic for its heaping steaks and sides. Named after the chef’s grandparents,  Fan and Johnny’s  crafts regional favorites like fried catfish and duck ravioli.

Hattiesburg

Hattiesburg

Named for the city founder’s wife, Hattiesburg was originally inhabited by Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes before the Trail of Tears . Today it is home to the University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University. It has an artsy atmosphere with murals and funky shops.

USM has its own art museum , which has works by students as well as local and national artists. The African American Military History Museum honors the contributions of Black Americans in the military. The Hattiesburg Pocket Museum is one of the quirky spots in town.

The Hattiesburg Zoo is popular with families, along with the Longleaf Trace Trail rails to trail path. Southern Prohibition Brewery is one of Mississippi’s craft breweries. The Lucky Rabbit is a quirky shop often used on the show Home Town.

Hattiesburg is home to Fika Swedish Cafe , inspired by Scandinavian dishes like toast, sandwiches, and Swedish meatballs. SouthBound Bagel & Coffee Shop showcases New York-style bagels in sandwiches or with cream cheese along with breakfast dishes.

The Midtowner is a classic diner open for breakfast and lunch along with blue plate specials. Another longtime spot is Ed’s Burger Joint , offering burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches.

Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel

Laurel has shot to fame thanks to the highly successful HGTV series Home Town . Hosts Ben and Erin Napier have transformed their community, opening shops and supporting restaurants. Fans can visit Laurel Mercantile and Scotsman General Store & Woodshop , which are owned by the couple.

But before its popularity, it was a stop along the Amtrak Crescent Line , settled in 1882. The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art is a must-see, located in a historic home. It was established in the 1920s and the collection includes rare Audubon prints, Japanese block prints, and paintings by the Hudson River School.

For its small size, there are some great restaurants in Laurel. Pearl’s Diner has been featured on the show for its Southern favorites like meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Enjoy the Latin flavors at Geckos’ Fresh Eats like the tacos, bowls, and wraps. The Loft offers steak, seafood, and pasta.

Natchez, Mississippi

Distance from Jackson: 1 hour 50 minutes

At over 300 years old, the riverfront settlement of Natchez is another place to get lost in history. It has Native American, African, French, Spanish, and British influences. Visitors flock to the city every year to tour the historic homes dating back to before the Civil War.

Start your journey at the Grand Village of the Natchez , which focuses on the burial mounds and artifacts on the Native American tribes from the area. Forks of the Road Historical Site is an important monument that was once the area’s largest slave market.

Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture details the importance of African Americans in local and state history. Take the Hands on Biscuit Class in Natchez , where a local chef teaches you to make Southern-style biscuits, or sip on a pint at Natchez Brewing Company .

Enjoy Mississippi-style tamales at The Donut Shop , a roadside counter, and Fat Mama’s Tamales , also known for their “knock you naked” margaritas.  The Camp Restaurant has regional brews and elevated pub fare like their burgers, sliders, and sandwiches.
