Fred Olsen – Dress Code – smart casual means smart

Fred Olsen says that smart casual means men with a jacket and or a shirt and tie in the evenings. For them this is traditional smart casual dress and the ladies are asked to dress smartly, but to be fair they don’t need to be encouraged, the turnout is always very smart and proper. This is a similar strict dress code to Cunard .

To be clear they state Chino type trousers or smart dark jeans are acceptable, though you rarely if ever see jeans. They certainly do not appreciate trainers in the evening. On their video, some men are seen in nice collared shirts but without ties on casual nights.

Even during the day, swimwear is not allowed in restaurants.

DRESS CODE – Who doesn’t have one? Who does? Why, how and should I?

Gala nights are a totally different thing, this is definitely black-tie of dark suit and tie and the ladies are to look stylish. I would suggest this is the same as the smaller and adult ships on P&O although they would claim there is no difference across the brand. To find out from those who cruise, or share your knowledge join your favourite ships chat and community page on Facebook.

FRED OLSEN CHAT – the chat site for those loving these small classic ships

It is important to understand that even in their buffet restaurants in the evening, the dress code is a more relaxed version of smart casual. Here is a quote from their site so as not to misrepresent them.

‘Eveningwear

Evening wear is simple on a Fred. Olsen cruise. Most evenings are smart casual with a few formal nights for the chance to dress up. And just to add some fun to the cruise, there may also be some optional theme nights on longer sailings.

Formal evenings

Depending on the length of your cruise holiday there will be one or more formal evenings whilst you are on board for cruise durations longer than six nights. This is your chance to ‘dress to impress’ and add glitz and glamour to your dining experience.

Most men opt to wear either a dinner jacket or a dark suit and tie. Ladies are often seen looking fabulous in anything from a cocktail-style dress to a full-length ball gown.

All Fred. Olsen cruise ships feature a casual dining experience for those guests who do not wish to join the formal evenings. The dress code for these restaurants is smart casual every evening.

Fred Olsen Cruises to St Petersburg  – Click here

Smart casual evenings

Most evenings during your cruise holiday will be smart casual evenings so you can feel relaxed and comfortable whilst enjoying your dinner. For men, a pair of trousers, chinos or smart (dark) jeans, coupled with a polo shirt or shirt is perfectly acceptable. Some guests prefer to wear a jacket or tie which is also fine. The choice is yours.

Ladies’ dress can often range from tailored trouser suits and stylish dresses to casual separates and summer dresses.

Please note: trainers, T-shirts, shorts, and tracksuits are not allowed in the restaurants for evening dining. We reserve the right to decline entry to those who refuse to show this courtesy to their fellow guests.

Daywear on board

Whether enjoying the sea views from the deck or participating in the many activities available, we want you to feel at ease. Casual wear is perfectly acceptable for your days on board with many guests opting for shorts and a T-shirt or polo shirt while cruising in sunny climes, and a pair of light-weight trousers and a sweater or jacket for cooler daytime temperatures.

Whilst on deck, bathing suits are a must to ensure you can make the most of the pools and Jacuzzis on board. A pair of flip-flops or sandals are advisable as the decks can sometimes get very warm (and please take care, as the decks can be slippery). A T-shirt and casual shorts are often preferred for lounging by the pool. And don’t forget your hat, sunglasses and suncream, as the sun can be a lot stronger at sea.

The dress is smart casual during lunchtime and as a courtesy to their fellow cruisers, guests are asked not to wear bathing suits or vests in the restaurants. However, smart shorts and a T-shirt are perfectly acceptable.’

About Us

Doris Visits is just a working hobby, and a way of helping people research ports and ships. It is our way of giving back as we are on the ships between 6 and 12 times a year as Guest Lecturers. The site is also supported by other guest lecturers and quest workers.

Why Doris?  It was a character Jean played in a TV show and we started the port guides as a little spin-off. It took over. I mean, rode into town and said this is it.

Who is Jean ?  Jean is a West End and Broadway actress who now has her own one woman show called Royal Mistresses, which she performs at guilds and on ships. Hence, she cruises – a bit. She now presents TV and is known by many cruisers for her Doris Visits port guides.

Who is Stuart?   Featured in a clip in the 2024 Oscars – in the tribute to movie stuntmen – he was the Queen Alien in Aliens. Now, he points the iPhone at Jean when they go and explore ashore. He finished in movies as a director, and now writes cruise thrillers.

Formal wear

I am booked on a 4 day mini-cruise from Rosyth.

Does anybody know the typical breakdown of male passengers that wear tuxedos and dark formal wear vs. dark suits vs. even kilts on formal nights.

And the same question for female passengers, the typical breakdown of cocktail dresses vs. evening gowns.

I have Campbell heritage and thought about a kilt though Campbell may not be historically popular.

A kilt always looks good on a formal night - and I doubt that anyone is bothered what tartan it is - so go ahead - be proud of your heritage.

There is quite a range of wear for ladies - anything from High Street smart to the full glitzy glamour model evening wear. Fred's ships are friendly rather than formal - and it is really just a chance to dress up in ones finery and wear a bit of sparkle : )

Have fun - and - just look out for breakfast on the morning on the formal night. some of the ships provide champers - but you have to look for it!

The percentage of Tuxedos was very high on our last cruise, I saw only a few dark suits, but there were some people in full highland dress minus the knife thingy:). Ladies wore a variety but high percentage of long dresses, I wore 2 long and I cocktail drress.

THE KNIFE THINGY IS CALLED A DIRK(SMALL DAGGER).:o

ON BOUDICCA AND BLACK PRINCE IF YOU HAD A REAL DIRK SECURITY TOOK IT FOM YOU,IT WAS RETURNED FOR FOR FORMAL NIGHTS ONLY THEN RETUNED AT END OF CRUISE.

SURPRISED YOU SAY MINUS AS A LOT OF MEN USE PLASTIC DIRKS.

BY THE WAY I WEAR A TUXEDO,DON'T HAVE KNEES OR LEGS FOR KILT.;)

500+ Club

Hi Petef. Don't be shy about wearing the Campbell tartan, it will be popular as the kilt always is on Fred. Olsen. As an exiled Scot of the same clan I regret no longer having a kilt!:)

Fred Olsen - Evening wear etc

By Iceland , July 24, 2006 in Fred. Olsen Cruise Line

We are booked on Boudicca in September, our first cruise with Fred Olsen. Apart from the Formal Nights are men required to wear shirts and ties? Or jackets?

On previous cruises on informal nights my husband has worn a short sleeved open neck shirt with smart trousers, will this be the same on Boudicca or does he need to pack some ties?

Can we purchase drink, ie Bacardi, Baileys on board to consume in our cabin?

Cool Cruiser

I am travelling on Fred Olsen's Black Watch on 31st July and according to the info men are expected to wear Jacket & Tie on informal nights. On our 13 night cruise it appears we have 3 formal nights, 3 theme nights, at least 2 casual nights for the first & last nights, which leaves up to 5 possible informal nights. Fred Olsen cruises appear to be one of the more traditional cruise lines who expect you to adhere to their dress code.

As regards drinks I know cruise lines frown upon people bringing spirits aboard for consuming in their cabins. They want you to spend as much money as possible in their bars. However if you buy the bottles on board their attitude may be different. Enjoy your cruise hic!!!:)

Sekhmet

We have sailed twice with Fd. Olsen (Black Watch & Braemar). Possibly because their target market is principally British and towards the mature age range, adherence to the dress code is more widely observed than on any other line we've used. On our last one (Norwegian Fjords), I did a quick estimate one formal night, and would put the men at 85% dinner jackets (tuxedos), and virtually all the rest in dark suits.

Thank you both for info. Formal nights are no problem, DH always wears Dinner Suit. Looks as though he's going to have to pack jackets and ties too. We're on a 12 night cruise to Canaries. What are the theme nights, I guess a British night, country night but can't think what the other might be?

Have a great time Welshy, look forward to from you on your return.

The other theme night on our cruise is Tropical night. I suppose I will have to dig out that very 'loud' caribbean shirt.

Thank you Welshy. Will have to see what he's got in the wardrobe just in case.

The theme nights appear to be more frequent than my last P&O cruise.

I'm off on Black Watch soon so am planning for the theme nights, so I can expect a red/white/blue night (AKA British night), a Western/Cowboy night and a Tropical night-is this standard or is there any other theme night they could throw at us?

We want to be ready to hit the night in our finest fancy dress!

katiecoos

The only nights Jacket and ties are not worn is on casual nights and theme nights.

we were on the black watch last year and purchased bottles (whisky and vodka) from the shop on board to drink in the cabin. no problems at all. when we purchased bottles from Gib they were taken from us as we boarded and handed back on the last night.

What to Wear on a Norwegian Fjords Cruise Explained

Packing for a Norwegian Fjords cruise can be tricky, especially if it’s your first time. On our first Norwegian Fjords cruise we found it particularly difficult to pack, so we created this guide to help you decide  what to wear on a Norwegian Fjords cruise .

Cruise Ship Dress Code

Firstly, it’s good to know your cruise line’s dress code. This will help you to pack the right clothes for the ship itself. There are a number of cruise lines that offer Norwegian Fjords cruises from the UK. Take a look at the dress codes by cruise line:

  • Ambassador Cruise Line dress code
  • Azamara dress code
  • Celebrity Cruises dress code
  • Cunard Line dress code
  • Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines dress code
  • MSC Cruises dress code
  • Norwegian Cruise Line dress code
  • P&O Cruises dress code
  • Princess Cruises dress code
  • Royal Caribbean International

Dress codes differ between cruise lines and some are more formal than others, make sure you check before packing for your cruise.

We took a Norwegian Fjords cruise with Princess Cruises and found that the dress code was quite relaxed. As long as you looked smart on a formal night, you did not look out of place.

To find out whether a Norwegian Fjords cruise with Princess Cruises is right for you, read our review now.

What to Wear on a Norwegian Fjords Cruise – Sea Days

Sea days on a Norwegian Fjords cruise are likely to be at the beginning and end of your cruise. The weather can vary depending on the time of year. If you’re unsure of the weather and what to wear on a Norwegian Fjords cruise, pack layers.

Shoulder Season

If you’re cruising to the Norwegian Fjords in the shoulder months (April, May, June and September) the North Sea is likely to be cloudy with patches of sunshine. You’re going to need to wear layers and ensure you have a warm jumper.

You’ll spend a lot of time inside the ship, so t-shirts, jumpers and jeans are definitely worth packing.

fred olsen cruises what to wear

Summer Season

The best weather is likely to be in July and August, so on a sea day, you could wear a short sleeved t-shirt with a lightweight sweater if it gets a little chilly. It’s still likely to be a bit breezy outside.

You may want to pack a swimming costume for the pool or hot tub.

Olden cruise port

Winter Season

On a winter Norwegian Fjords cruise, you are going to need thermal layers and a warm coat if you decide to venture out on to the open decks. Hats and gloves are essential to ensure you stay warm.

You’re likely to spend most of your time inside the cruise ship so jeans, t-shirts and jumpers are suitable to pack.

What to Wear on a Norwegian Fjords Cruise – Shore Excursions

A Norwegian Fjords cruise has a heavy focus on getting outside and enjoying the scenery. Once the cruise ship reaches the Norwegian Fjords, you’re likely enjoy a combination of exploring the ports and scenic cruising.

what to wear in Norway on a cruise

Your cruise will offer organised shore excursions or you may decide to do your own thing once you get to a port. Either way, there’s likely to be an element of walking involved and therefore comfortable walking shoes are necessary.

Try to avoid wearing new shoes you haven’t worn in. High heels are definitely not recommended, especially in small towns that have cobblestone streets. Ballet flats or trainers would be good options in local towns.

what to wear on a norwegian fjords cruise in port

Some excursions involve walking or hiking and for these we’d recommend walking shoes or supportive trainers. If you’re planning a boat excursion, pack a warm coat.

On a Norwegian Fjords cruise, you can experience sunshine and rain in the same day so we’d suggest packing a lightweight raincoat, even in the summer months. Western Norway is known to be one of the wettest places in the world.

pack a waterproof jacket and walking shoes for a Norwegian Fjords cruise

A small backpack  or crossover bag is useful for excursions to carry small items such as: a water bottle, hat, camera and personal items.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise Packing List – Spring/Summer

  • Casual tops
  • Lightweight jumper/cardigan
  • Polo shirts for men
  • Shorts/capri pants/cropped trousers
  • Jeans/chinos
  • Lightweight jacket
  • Waterproof jacket

  • Smart collared shirt for men
  • Loafers/boat shoes for men
  • Walking shoes/boots (if required)
  • Smart trousers
  • Scarf/pashmina
  • Cross-over bag/backpack

We’d recommend taking a look at our 40 tips to enjoy a Norwegian Fjords cruise , which includes other essentials to pack.

Norwegian fjords cruise packing list – winter.

Watch our Norwegian Fjords Cruise Vlogs

To help you get an idea of the weather and what to wear on a Norwegian Fjords cruise, we’d recommend watching our vlog series.

Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.
