Putting science to the side, local legend has it that the Causeway was created by an Irish giant - Finn McCool. This giant pulled the earth from the ground to create a pathway for his enemy Benandooner - a rival giant. Outwitted by McCool, Benandonner fled back to Scotland, wrecking the earth as he went.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge - This extreme 30m deep, 20m wide chasm is where one can see the best views in the country - though certainly not for the faint hearted!

Its name comes from the Irish, "Carraig a' Raid," meaning "rock of the casting”, and the bridge in its current form was constructed in the year 2000. However, it is believed that rope bridge has been used to reach the island for more than 350 years for fishermen to harvest salmon - in the 70s it consisted of just gaping slats with a handrail!

Please note crossing of the Bridge is optional and not included in the price of the tour.

As we drive back towards Belfast our incredible guide will talk about the history of Belfast before we arrive at the Titanic Tour. Do you Need a Tour for the Giants Causeway?

While tours provide a convenient, hassle-free experience, with lots of perks that make them worthwhile (like all of the history you’ll get from your guide), there’s no rule that says you must join a tour to visit the Giants Causeway.

Adventurous souls can certainly explore this geological wonder on their own. Just hop on a public bus or drive yourself there, pay the parking fee (if you’re driving), and voila! You’re free to traverse those enchanting hexagonal stepping stones at your own pace.

Just remember, the Irish elements can be unpredictable, even on a good day, so ensuring you’re prepared for anything (i.e. flat tires, running out of gas, inclement weather, etc.) is essential.

Is there a Belfast to Giants Causeway Train?

There is no direct train from Belfast to Giants Causeway, unfortunately. However, you can take a train from Belfast city center to Coleraine, then jump on over to the bus station to ride a bus up to the Giants Causeway.

It’s definitely a bit more confusing of a travel method and will require some day pass tickets and so forth, but if you’re on a very tight budget, this is the most cost-efficient method of seeing the Giants causeway.

Is there a Belfast to Giants Causeway Bus?

There is a bus from Coleraine to Giants Causeway (you would get off at The Nook’ stop) which takes about 2 hours, but you would have about a 30-minute walk to the Causeway once you arrived.

The total journey time would take roughly 2 hours (not including the train ride to Coleraine), so if you’re on a bit of a time crunch, then a guided tour will save you a lot of time.

Can you Swim at Giants Causeway?

While there are some shallow pools you could technically swim in, it isn’t really recommended since it’s very rocky and if you were to slip on the rocks or be knocked over by the waves, serious injury could occur.

Not to mention, the Atlantic Ocean is quite cold and Ireland isn’t typically a hot weather destination, even in the summer months!

If you want to go for a swim, consider one of the nearby beaches such as Bushfoot Beach and Runkerry Beach.

To get free parking for the Giants Causeway, you’re going to need to plan on spending 45 minutes to an hour walking from either the village of Portballintrae or from the Bushmills Heritage Railway Station .

As per the sightseeing – well worth going -Giants Causeway is beautiful to see and the Titanic museum was very interesting and informative. Overall it was a 5 star tour!!!

LisaB1963 3 months ago Long day on a tour bus made enjoyable by our driver, Captain John. During the drive he gave an informative but just enough background on Irish political history explaining how Ireland ended up separated and lots of hints of necessary things to know and do for an even more enjoyable trip. Fully recommend our driver, he seems to enjoy what he does for a living and it translates to how he treats his guests. I feel we had enough time to experience most of it, and ended up back in Dublin in time for a late dinner (9ish). About the titanic experience, so you know, it’s a compilation of pictures, video and audio describing the boat and the day it went down. There are no artifacts. Giants causeway is so cool. Waterproof coat and hood are a must. Hiking shoes good too, rocks are slippery. Afterward there is a hotel lounge and a restaurant serving hot beverages and snack if desired.

MZaidi227 3 days ago Loved the tour with Jack and Neil C My husband and I spent a delightful day with Jack and Neil C. We took off from Dublin. It felt like a bonus tour because it was combined with tourists who were going to see the Game of Thrones sites; whereas we were headed to the Titanic museum. The soft lilt of the story teller’s voice drew pictures of giants and Irish myths. He also communicated the rich history of northern Ireland very well, and how lucky we were to visit an area that was undergoing rapid development. I wish I took all my tours with this company. They are the absolute best.

I am planning to go to the Giants Causeway + the Carrick-a-rede bridge in the following days. Do I need to prebook the visits on their website or can I just show up on the day, get the tickets and get inside? I am planning to go on this Saturday.

Carrick-a-Rede is advisable if you wish to cross the bridge. You don’t need to pay just to walk to see the bridge.

There is no charge to visit Giant’s Causeway, only to enter the visitor centre and no need to book.

Parking is charged at both locations.

Do the bridge first if your early in the morning. Before the tour coaches arrive.

Maybe 09.30 onwards. But there may not be to many this early in the season. Weather is given as good for the weekend, so you may be in luck.
