- TripAdvisor Giants Causeway Our trip to Giants Causeway was great. Desmond was the best tour guide ever. Make sure to do the black taxi tour in Belfast.
- TripAdvisor Bailey for president! Also, Giants Causeway trip is a must! I recently visited Dublin and did the Paddywagon Day Tour to Giant's Causeway. The scenery was breathtaking and the places we visited were truly exquisite. The tour itself strategically planned to gain the best possible experience from just 1 day of adventuring. Can Kids take a Giant’s Causeway tour from Dublin?

While young kids (under 2) can join some of the tours to the Giant’s Causeway there are some caveats. The journey times are long on the tour and as some tours last so long it’s not recommended or allowed to take kids under age 2 on the day trips. This obviously doesn’t apply if you are renting a car to visit the Giant’s Causeway, however, visitors will need to be happy with the journey time with young kids. If your kids (over aged 2) are ok with the journey times, they’ll love the Giant’s Causeway itself.

Giants Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage site , is a dramatic landscape of about 40,000 basalt columns emerging from the sea off the North Coast of Ireland. The columns formed millions of years ago after a volcanic eruption. The area is so impressive that it inspired the legend of giant Fionn Mac Cumhaill who built the stepping stones to reach Scotland. The area is a must-see on any visit to Ireland – whether you’re interested in the mythology and folklore , or simply want to take in the beauty of the rugged North.

Our Northern Ireland Day Tour from Dublin is the ideal way to explore the Giants' Causeway and this fantastic region! Take advantage of your time in Belfast and opt to take either a Black Taxi Tour to learn about the political conflict in the North , or join the Titanic Visitor Experience to witness interactive displays and reconstructions of the fateful ship.

Of course, a trip to the North is incomplete without a visit to the gem in the crown – th e Giant’s Causeway . Here you can walk along the basalt columns which disappear under the sea and take in stunning views of the wild ocean. The spectacular rock formation is named after an Irish myth your driver will be happy to share with you on the way. Created more than 60 million years ago after a series of volcanic eruptions it is best known for its distinctive rock formations that span nearly 18 miles (29kms) of coastline.

  • Alexandra McDonald ★★★★★ in the last week What a fantastic and professional tour company! This Wild Rover tour from Dublin to the Cliffs was the perfect choice for my 7 year old and me. We were visiting Dublin for a long weekend and the Cliffs had been a bucket list item, and not stressing about driving was my main reason for booking. I reserved on their website directly (a fair price!) and went to the meeting point that day at 7am. They have … More large, comfortable coaches with their logo. The Cliffs are magnificent and a must-see! The driver Garry and our guide Rory were so professional and entertaining. Rory pointed out landmarks as we drove, gave us a comprehensive history of Ireland, and had such a lovely personality all day! We made a rest stop on the route there and back (no WC on the bus). We returned back at 7:30pm and it was such a great (albeit long) day. Furthermore, Rory came through the cabin as we were arriving back in Dublin to answer any personal questions we had about the area, and took a few minutes to recommend local restaurants, pubs, and experiences that we would find useful. Absolutely recommend!!
  • Bob Carey ★★★★ ☆ 3 days ago Our tour guide Barbara was great. She was very entertaining and informative. The Giants Causeway was beautiful and breathtaking. My only disappointment was the Black Cab tour. Our driver was not aware of our passengers, at one point we had to get back in the cab to go no more than 150 feet…. He presented the time of the Troubles from his perspective as a youth growing up. Otherwise, I highly recommend … More Wild River.
  • Shauna ★★★★★ a week ago My family took this tour and it was wonderful! We loved the Titanic museum and the history there. We also loved seeing Dunluce Castle and the gorgeous views there. Then we ended tour at the causeway, which was also amazing. Our tour guide, Una was wonderful and gave great information for the area. We would recommend this tour and company, and hope to be back soon for another tour!
  • Joshua ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago We found this trip well worth the price to experience and see some of "real" Ireland. Kilkenny was a great little city with plenty of shops, restaurants, and history to explore. Glendalough was such a fantastic time. From the history, to exploring the grounds, to the picturesque walk to the upper lake, it was perfect! The sheep farm was a great experience as well, the whole family enjoyed … More it! We were three adults, a 13 year old, a 5 year old, and a 2 year old. All enjoyed it and had fun! Tour operators Elisa and Peter were great!
  • Mary Norton ★★★★★ a week ago We truly enjoyed this tour! The driver and host were so knowledgeable and entertaining. The visit to Kilkenny was grand. The experience in the mountains, holy land and sheep farm were all beautiful and lovely! You need to do this tour!
  • Kevin D. ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago This was an outstanding trip. Our Guide Neil and driver Brian were excellent. Neil was very knowledgeable, fun and gave us tons of information and tips. Kilkenny is a wonder city and Kilkenny Castle and grounds were absolutely stunning. The Wicklow mountains offered some great views of the Irish Countyside, but the absolute icing on the cake was Cullen’s sheep farm. This was so entertaining and informative. … More We learned about life as an Irish sheep farmer in the mountains and even got to hold baby lambs. I highly recommend. This was a great trip if you want to get out of Dublin and see a different side of Ireland.
  • Liz Switzer ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago The Cliffs of Moher and Galway tour was fabulous! Rory was a very knowledgeable and kind guide. He also went out of his way to make special connections with almost everyone on the bus. This was such a special experience and I would recommend to anyone visiting Ireland!
  • Christina McElroy ★★★★★ a week ago We had the most amazing trip to the Cliffs with Yvonne and Steven. She was so funny and knowledgeable, I would follow her anywhere!! Such a wonderful tour and tour guide. Truly enjoyed our visit. Eventho it was foggy it was still beautiful 😍
  • Bonnie Timm ★★★★★ a week ago I took the Kilkenny, Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough Day Tour From Dublin and my mom and I had such a great time! Ian our tour guide gave us such interesting information about where we were and was very helpful and gave great recommendations. The actual locations we went were beautiful and gave a great overview of the east coast of Ireland. The Wicklow mountains were stunning and I can see why their … More water is used to make Guinness! Very fun time. Would recommend! I got to hold a baby lamb and I have not stopped thinking about it! Go raibh maith agat Ian!

Giants Causeway Tour - Finn McCools Tours

giants causeway tour from dublin

Giant’s Causeway - At Northern Ireland’s most popular visitor attraction you will experience the unforgettable sights, breathtaking hexagonal columns and awe-inspiring landscape of this must-see World Heritage Site, which is known as the “8th wonder of the world” and one of the most memorable stops on your Finn McCools tour.

You will see the Irish landscape at its most iconic: emerald green hills, stunning seascape and the unique stone columns that reach 40 feet into the air and form the Causeway itself. The causeway was created by a volcanic eruption and stretches all the way to Scotland from the shores of Northern Ireland making it one of the top places to see in Ireland.

Putting science to the side, local legend has it that the Causeway was created by an Irish giant - Finn McCool. This giant pulled the earth from the ground to create a pathway for his enemy Benandooner - a rival giant. Outwitted by McCool, Benandonner fled back to Scotland, wrecking the earth as he went.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge - This extreme 30m deep, 20m wide chasm is where one can see the best views in the country - though certainly not for the faint hearted!

Its name comes from the Irish, "Carraig a' Raid," meaning "rock of the casting”, and the bridge in its current form was constructed in the year 2000. However, it is believed that rope bridge has been used to reach the island for more than 350 years for fishermen to harvest salmon - in the 70s it consisted of just gaping slats with a handrail!

Please note crossing of the Bridge is optional and not included in the price of the tour.

Dark Hedges - Enjoy a photo stop at the Dark hedges. This amazing location was used in the hit HBO series “Game of thrones” for the scene where Arya Stark escapes. And is an amazing photo opportunity not to be missed.

Dunluce Castle - Dunluce Castle is one of the most beautiful in all of Ireland, and was constructed in the 13th Century by Richard Og de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster.

FAQ: Giants Causeway Tours

In this FAQ section, we’re going to jump into answering your most popular questions regarding your Giants Causeway tour and what to expect. Let’s get started!

Is Giants Causeway Worth the Trip?

giants causeway tour from dublin

Absolutely, unequivocally, and without a doubt, the Giants Causeway is worth the trip! It’s an astounding must-see spectacle that looks like it’s straight out of a fantasy novel.

With its 40,000 interlocking hexagonal columns that stretch into the sea, it’s a landscape that seemingly defies the laws of nature. It’s like stepping into an enormous game of “Hexagonal Hopscotch”, courtesy of ancient volcanic activity.

Plus, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which basically means it’s in the global Hall of Fame for places worth visiting in Northern Ireland.

What is the Best Month to Visit the Giants Causeway?

giants causeway tour from dublin

The best month to visit the Giants Causeway is June or July when temperatures are warmer and the likelihood of rain is at a low for the year ( don’t get too excited, there’s pretty much always a chance of rain in Ireland ).

However, this is also when the number of tourists is at its peak, so if you’re looking for a more solitary experience, you may want to consider visiting during the off-season (November through March).

The wild North Atlantic shoreline and Giants Causeway coastal route is particularly stunning during these months too, with dramatic grey clouds and crashing waves. The light might not be as bright and sunny and you’ll definitely need to bundle up, but it’s perfect for a dramatic landscape photo!

How Much Does it Cost to Go to the Giants Causeway?

Traveling with a big group of friends or your family and worrying about racking up the costs on this day trip? Well, don’t!

It is 100% free to visit the Giants Causeway including the visitor’s center . The tours mentioned below may or may not include professional and knowledgeable guides, private transportation, lunch, hotel pick-up and drop-off, and many other add-ons that may contribute to the price of the tour.

However, if you plan to use any of the other on-site facilities, then you will need to pay the Visitor Experience fee of £13.00 per adult and £6.50 per child.

If you happen to rent a car and want to drive yourself to the Giants Causeway, you’re welcome to do that, as well!

Fortunately for travelers, an all-day tour to the Giants Causeway won’t break the bank! It is something you’ll certainly still need to budget for, but it’s far from being the most expensive tour you can find in Ireland.

Tours typically range between $50-$150 per person . The cost varies based on how big the group is, where you’re traveling from (further distances usually cost a bit more), if lunch is included, and so forth.

☘️ Pro Tip: If you are planning on renting a car, be sure to be aware of the driving conditions beforehand. The Irish drive on the left side of the road while sitting on the right side of the car, and almost all cars are manuals. If you aren’t comfortable driving under these conditions in a foreign country, then we highly recommend booking one of the tours we have mentioned below.

Can you Visit Giants Causeway for Free?

If you really want to, you could technically visit the Giants Causeway for completely free .

This would mean walking about an hour from the nearest free parking lot in Portballintrae and doing a self-guided tour. So, if you were wondering “do you need a tour for the Giants Causeway?”, the answer is technically no, but there’s a catch…

We don’t typically recommend this since you’re going to lose a lot of time getting to and from the most popular sites (especially if the weather is poor) and you’re going to miss out on learning all about the site and its history.

There are plenty of affordable tours to take advantage of, plus they’re going to make your life a whole lot easier. There are just some things worth budgeting for!

Do you Need a Tour for the Giants Causeway?

giants causeway tour from dublin

While tours provide a convenient, hassle-free experience, with lots of perks that make them worthwhile (like all of the history you’ll get from your guide), there’s no rule that says you must join a tour to visit the Giants Causeway.

Adventurous souls can certainly explore this geological wonder on their own. Just hop on a public bus or drive yourself there, pay the parking fee (if you’re driving), and voila! You’re free to traverse those enchanting hexagonal stepping stones at your own pace.

Just remember, the Irish elements can be unpredictable, even on a good day, so ensuring you’re prepared for anything (i.e. flat tires, running out of gas, inclement weather, etc.) is essential.

How Long Does it Take to Tour Giants Causeway?

There are all types of Giant's Causeway tours including private, half-day, and full-day tours

While this will depend on your personal preferences, the average amount of time spent at the Giants Causeway is between 2-4 hours .

Some people choose to pack a lunch with them and enjoy the view from a scenic spot, and some spend just long enough to grab a few good photos before hopping back in their cars ready to move on to the next spot.

Typically, 2-3 hours is plenty of time to do the short hikes, get some great pictures, and really take in the view from multiple vantage points.

Most tours sit in the 9-14 hour range owing to the long drive from both Belfast and Dublin, with the Belfast to Giants Causeway time averaging around 1.25 hours each way.

This includes the time spent at the Giants Causeway itself and other attractions on the way, such as Dunluce Castle or the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge, plus the time spent in transport from the surrounding major cities.

How Much Time Should I Allow for Giants Causeway?

giants causeway tour from dublin

To fully bask in the Giants Causeway’s geological glory and explore its surroundings, a good rule of thumb is to allow at least two to three hours. Most tours factor this in, so you won’t have to worry if you’re joining one of the guided tours I mentioned above.

This gives you enough time to walk to the stones, snap some breathtaking photos, and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the clifftop path. It’s always recommended to factor in a little extra time just in case the Causeway’s magic wants to hang around with you a little longer.

Is there a Belfast to Giants Causeway Train?

The best part about taking private Giant's Causeway tours is the ability to arrange your own schedule

There is no direct train from Belfast to Giants Causeway, unfortunately. However, you can take a train from Belfast city center to Coleraine, then jump on over to the bus station to ride a bus up to the Giants Causeway.

It’s definitely a bit more confusing of a travel method and will require some day pass tickets and so forth, but if you’re on a very tight budget, this is the most cost-efficient method of seeing the Giants causeway.

Is there a Belfast to Giants Causeway Bus?

Many Giant's Causeway tours will take place rain or shine

There is a bus from Coleraine to Giants Causeway (you would get off at The Nook’ stop) which takes about 2 hours, but you would have about a 30-minute walk to the Causeway once you arrived.

The total journey time would take roughly 2 hours (not including the train ride to Coleraine), so if you’re on a bit of a time crunch, then a guided tour will save you a lot of time.

Can you Swim at Giants Causeway?

Most Giant's Causeway tours do not allow swimming depending on the area you're in

While there are some shallow pools you could technically swim in, it isn’t really recommended since it’s very rocky and if you were to slip on the rocks or be knocked over by the waves, serious injury could occur.

Not to mention, the Atlantic Ocean is quite cold and Ireland isn’t typically a hot weather destination, even in the summer months!

If you want to go for a swim, consider one of the nearby beaches such as Bushfoot Beach and Runkerry Beach.

Where Can I Park for Free at Giants Causeway?

We recommend taking advantage of the full-day Giant's Causeway tours since you'll be glad to have plenty of time and not be rushed

If you’re looking to stay on a budget for your trip to the Giants Causeway, then you might want to avoid the parking lot directly at the Giants Causeway terminus.

It usually only costs £5.00, but if you’re up for a scenic walk, then take a peek at the options below.

If you want to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site on your own without the help of a tour group it schedules and plans everything for you, then you’ll need to rent a car or be prepared to pay for some pretty expensive taxis.

To get free parking for the Giants Causeway, you’re going to need to plan on spending 45 minutes to an hour walking from either the village of Portballintrae or from the Bushmills Heritage Railway Station .

It’s a scenic walk if you have plenty of time, but if not then we recommend budgeting for parking at the terminus.

Was Game of Thrones Filmed at the Giants Causeway?

No, Game of Thrones wasn’t actually filmed at the Giants Causeway. But don’t let that put you off visiting!

While the Giants Causeway itself may not have starred in the series, Northern Ireland is teeming with fantastic locations that did.

From the moody Dark Hedges to the dramatic landscapes of Ballintoy, there’s a plethora of filming locations to make any Game of Thrones fan’s heart race.

Some Giant's Causeway tours include visits to other sites

Dreamer26110905755 2 weeks ago Great day ,great guide and very interesting loads of info on the heritage of parts of northern Ireland, I would definitely recommend this tour.

klp330206 3 weeks ago Wonderful trip Daniel and our driver made this long day wonderful and fun. He kept us on time and even entertained us with songs and his guitar. The Giant’s Causeway was amazing and we had enough time to enjoy it. The titanic museum was just what I expected – great. Thanks for a great day, Karen Peterson

Soong L 2 months ago The tour was so interesting and very enjoyable. Bernard, The Tour Guide, was very entertaining and knowledgeable. We highly recommend the tour.

AnnaD198 2 months ago Great tour company. Our tour guide was amazing…really nice and entertaining. He even sang a couple of songs on the bus…wonderful! As per the sightseeing – well worth going -Giants Causeway is beautiful to see and the Titanic museum was very interesting and informative. Overall it was a 5 star tour!!!

LisaB1963 3 months ago Long day on a tour bus made enjoyable by our driver, Captain John. During the drive he gave an informative but just enough background on Irish political history explaining how Ireland ended up separated and lots of hints of necessary things to know and do for an even more enjoyable trip. Fully recommend our driver, he seems to enjoy what he does for a living and it translates to how he treats his guests. I feel we had enough time to experience most of it, and ended up back in Dublin in time for a late dinner (9ish). About the titanic experience, so you know, it’s a compilation of pictures, video and audio describing the boat and the day it went down. There are no artifacts. Giants causeway is so cool. Waterproof coat and hood are a must. Hiking shoes good too, rocks are slippery. Afterward there is a hotel lounge and a restaurant serving hot beverages and snack if desired.

Kayla A. 2 months ago Our tour guide was very funny and genuine, and the tour had the perfect amount of stops–really felt like we got a feel of Ireland in a short period of time.

MZaidi227 3 days ago Loved the tour with Jack and Neil C My husband and I spent a delightful day with Jack and Neil C. We took off from Dublin. It felt like a bonus tour because it was combined with tourists who were going to see the Game of Thrones sites; whereas we were headed to the Titanic museum. The soft lilt of the story teller’s voice drew pictures of giants and Irish myths. He also communicated the rich history of northern Ireland very well, and how lucky we were to visit an area that was undergoing rapid development. I wish I took all my tours with this company. They are the absolute best.

I am planning to go to the Giants Causeway + the Carrick-a-rede bridge in the following days. Do I need to prebook the visits on their website or can I just show up on the day, get the tickets and get inside? I am planning to go on this Saturday.

Many thanks!

Carrick-a-Rede is advisable if you wish to cross the bridge. You don’t need to pay just to walk to see the bridge.

There is no charge to visit Giant’s Causeway, only to enter the visitor centre and no need to book.

Just when I see your location reminds me that the Spanish gallass La Girona (part of the Spanish Armada) sank near the Giants Causeway in 1588,

Thanks both for your quick response - If I am a National Trust member, do I get both entrances for free (including parking) I understand?

Yes. There are no charges for NT members.

Do the bridge first if your early in the morning. Before the tour coaches arrive.

Thanks guys! Do you know around what time the tour coaches arrive? Around 10.00am?

Maybe 09.30 onwards. But there may not be to many this early in the season. Weather is given as good for the weekend, so you may be in luck.
