Gm to expand its super cruise network, adding hundreds of thousands of miles of ‘hands-free’ roads.

Avatar for Scooter Doll

General Motors (GM) has announced a massive expansion to its Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance network. The expansion will double the size of the current Super Cruise network to over 400,000 miles of compatible roadways and will soon be available to over 20 GM models.

Super Cruise is a hands-free driver assistance feature introduced by GM for its marques years ago. It uses adaptive cruise control technology and connected services in the vehicle to navigate LiDAR-enabled map data using real-time positioning, cameras, and sensors.

The result is an EV that can control its own acceleration and braking while on compatible roads. In recent years, GM has added upgrades to Super Cruise to include new functions, like automatic lane changes.

We’ve seen Super Cruise in action on GM vehicles like the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV , and the American automaker reported that over 34 million miles with Super Cruise engaged have been driven by its customers to date.

Following an announcement this morning, GM will be significantly bolstering the size of the Super Cruise network in the US and Canada and will expand functionality to 22 different models in the next 18 months.

Super Cruise is expanding to 22 GM vehicles by 2023

According to its press release, General Motors is doubling the Super Cruise network in North America to cover over 400,000 miles of roads. Previously, the network was only mapped out against interstate highways, but it will now be available on many state and federal routes as well. Here are a couple of notable routes in the expansion:

  • US Route 66 (The Mother Road)
  • CA Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway)
  • US Route 1 (Overseas Highway)
  • Trans-Canada Highway

In addition to the map expansion, GM is also adding functionality to more of its vehicles, particularly those built on the new VIP architecture. This includes EVs like the Cadillac Lyriq , GMC Hummer EV , Chevy Silverado EV, Blazer EV , and more. GM Chief Engineer, Super Cruise, Mario Maiorana spoke:

GM is all in when it comes to accessible advanced driver assistance technology. We are adding Super Cruise to more vehicles than ever, and on more roads for more customers to experience. We are pursuing what we believe to be the most comprehensive path to autonomy in the industry with responsible deployment of automated driving technology like Super Cruise at the core of what we do.

All in all, General Motors will add Super Cruise to 22 new vehicles before the end of 2023. The expansion will begin rolling out on 2022 models on the VIP architecture later this year as a free over-the-air (OTA) update , while 2023 models should come with the expanded network access already activated. GM’s Super Cruise Doubles Coverage to 400K Miles of Roads, Adds Route 66 and PCH

GM’s system has been growing since it debuted in 2017, however this latest update is by far the largest.

Self-Driving Tech photo

General Motors said Wednesday that its Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system would add hundreds of thousands of miles of new highways by the end of this year. The new map information, which GM says will come first to vehicles equipped with its "VIP" electrical architecture, doubles the size of the Super Cruise network to 400,000 miles. New routes include several classic American highways outside of the interstates, including Route 66 , California's Pacific Coast Highway, and the Overseas Highway, which spans the length of the road-accessible Florida Keys. The Trans-Canada highway, which spans the length of our neighbor to the north, also will be added.

The announcement comes days after Ford said more than 10 million miles have been traveled using its Blue Cruise system , a competitor to Super Cruise. In its announcement, GM noted that drivers had used its system for 34 million miles, since its introduction in a limited selection of vehicles since 2017.

This large Super Cruise update will find its way onto VIP-equipped vehicles later this year for free. Currently, a number of Cadillac models including the CT4, CT5, Escalade , and Lyriq are equipped with the VIP architecture. It is also used on the current Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado and the GMC equivalents of those vehicles. Super Cruise is not currently available in some of those trucks, though. The automaker did not comment on when other non-VIP vehicles equipped with Super Cruise, like the Chevy Bolt EV and Cadillac CT6 might get the new data.

Super Cruise originally covered just 130,000 miles of almost strictly interstates, although it later expanded to 200,000 miles of other highways before this latest update. As well as offering hands-free highway driving thanks to an eye-tracking system located on the steering column it can be activated while towing a trailer on certain vehicles. It can also pass slower-moving traffic automatically without a driver's prompt in certain situations. The system uses LiDAR maps and real-time data from cameras and radar sensors to guide the vehicle down the highway. This is in contrast to Tesla's autopilot that now uses strictly cameras in many vehicles.

GM's Super Cruise is being followed up by Ultra Cruise, a system enabling "door-to-door" hands-free driving beyond just highways. It is set to debut in the new Cadillac Celestiq , a massive flagship sedan expected to cost around $300,000.

GM’s Super Cruise will cover 400,000 miles of roads in North America, doubling coverage

The automaker’s ‘hands-free’ advanced driver-assist system is coming to a lot more roads.

Super Cruise, the “hands-free” advanced driver-assist system (ADAS) from General Motors, will soon be available on a lot more roads in North America. GM announced today that, later this year, the ADAS system will be able to operate on 400,000 miles of roads, including non-divided highways — which would essentially double Super Cruise’s current coverage in the US and Canada.

It represents a major expansion of Super Cruise’s capabilities at a time when US regulators are scrutinizing driver-assist features more closely and safety advocates are calling for more transparency , citing research that shows how new technology can create safety risks inadvertently.

It represents a major expansion of Super Cruise’s capabilities

Launched in 2017 with the Cadillac CT6, Super Cruise uses information from cameras and radar sensors embedded on the car, GPS data, and lidar mapping data collected by the company to allow for hands-free driving and, in some cases, automatic lane changes. It pairs this capability with a driver-monitoring system that uses an infrared camera to make sure the driver is paying attention to the road in case Super Cruise needs to hand back control to the driver.

Unlike Tesla’s Autopilot, which can be activated on almost any highway or road as long as the system spots visible lane markers, drivers are currently only able to use Super Cruise on divided highways that GM has laser mapped and approved for use. Up until now , that included just 200,000 miles of limited-access highways with concrete barriers dividing opposite lanes of traffic.

But, starting later this year, drivers of vehicles like the Chevy Silverado, GMC Hummer EV, or Cadillac Lyriq will be able to use Super Cruise on non-divided state and federal highways, which are sometimes called routes — main roads that connect smaller cities and towns. That includes the famed US Route 66, running from Chicago to Los Angeles; the Pacific Coast Highway, which runs along California’s coastline; the Overseas Highway, which connects Miami to the Florida Keys; and the Trans-Canada Highway, which transverses the country from east to west.

“Super Cruise is really helping redefine vehicle ownership and it’s really part of our wider path to autonomy at General Motors,” said Mario Maiorana, Super Cruise chief engineer, in a briefing with reporters.

“Super Cruise is really helping redefine vehicle ownership”

For new GM vehicles built on the automaker’s “VIP electrical architecture,” the expansion will be available later this year and will be delivered at no additional charge via an over-the-air software update. Vehicles not built on the VIP electrical architecture, which include the Cadillac CT6 and XT6 and the Chevy Bolt EUV, will have to wait a little longer. GM intends for Super Cruise to be available in 22 models by the end of 2023.

On a parallel track, expanding Super Cruise is a step toward the much more ambitious Ultra Cruise , which GM has said will cover “95 percent” of driving tasks and will make its debut in a handful of premium vehicles starting in 2023. (GM has said that the two systems will “co-exist,” with Super Cruise available in more “mainstream” vehicles while Ultra Cruise will be reserved for the automaker’s luxury models.)

But there are still a lot of driving tasks that Super Cruise will not be able to handle. The system does not interface with the vehicle’s navigation system in a way that enables drivers to input a destination and let the car make all the necessary turns and lane changes.

In addition, Super Cruise cannot handle traffic signals and stop signs, meaning that the system will notify the driver when an intersection is 350 meters away (or 500 meters for non-VIP vehicles) so they can take control of the vehicle. And Super Cruise will not allow automatic lane changes on two-lane highways. In other words, it won’t cross either broken yellow or solid yellow lane markings.

What it will be capable of is handling the driving on a more broadly complex section of road types. For example, some sections of the Pacific Coast Highway are extremely curvy with only the bare minimum of space between opposing lanes of traffic. According to GM, the system’s use of high-definition maps of those roads will enable it to deal with every twist and turn safely and confidently.

gm super cruise expansion map

“With a high definition LIDAR generated map, we can see out further beyond what the vehicle sensors can,” said David Craig, chief of maps at GM. “So we know the curvature of the road coming up, we know the speed we need to be able to navigate that curvature, and we’re in control of the speed longitudinally.”

Super Cruise is just a Level 2 system, based on the six tiers of vehicle autonomy as designated by SAE International and federal regulators. With Level 2, the human driver must be watching the road and ready to take control. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is now requiring automakers to provide data on crashes that occur with these Level 2 systems engaged.

Super Cruise options for around $2,200 for the Chevy Bolt EUV, but prices vary from model to model. GM isn’t planning on raising its prices for the system — but the automaker has expressed a desire to sell more features as monthly subscriptions as opposed to a one-time fee. ( Tesla sells its Level 2 “Full Self Driving” beta system as a $199 a month subscription or as a $12,000 upfront fee.)

ADAS is becoming much more common in vehicles

ADAS is becoming much more common in vehicles, with a variety of models at all different price points offering features like adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, pedestrian alerts, and lane centering. While still Level 2, Super Cruise is more advanced, allowing drivers to take their hands completely off the wheel. And researchers are studying what happens to a driver’s attention when they are not in total control of the vehicle’s operations but are still expected to stay fully engaged in the driving.

Maiorana called the driver-monitoring system “the linchpin” of Super Cruise’s approach to safety, but he acknowledged that it was mostly a convenience feature as opposed to one designed to enhance the safety of driving.

“The benefit you get is the Super Cruise system itself handles the mundane portion of the driving: the steering, the deceleration, the braking,” he said. “I find when I’m driving Super Cruise, I am attentive, I’m watching the road, yet — and I am not a neuroscientist by any stretch — I get to my destination, feeling much more relaxed.”

GM's Super Cruise expansion adds 750,000 miles of rural roads

That will nearly double its current network..

GM has announced a significant expansion of its Super Cruise operating area by around 750,000 miles to rural roads and minor highways in the US and Canada, TechCrunch reported. The upgrade is set to be completed by 2025 and will nearly double the automaker's current 400,000 mile network.

First launched in 2017 , Super Cruise allows fully hands-free operation under the supervision of a driver, who must be ready to take control at any time. It uses highly accurate GPS, cameras, radar sensors and a driver attention system to ensure the operator is paying attention.

However, it can only be operated on designated roads that have been LiDAR scanned for GM by a third-party contractor. That generates maps maps showing lane level data, topography, the radius of road curves and more, allowing Super Cruise to adjust speeds when necessary. That's particularly important on rural roads and highways that are more likely to have tight curves, steep hills and other potentially dangerous sections.

The automaker has taken a slow approach to its driver assistance system, especially compared to rival Tesla, which offers a $12,000 Full Self Driving system that can operate on city streets. GM recently unveiled the Ultra Cruise system that could also work in cities, saying it could be used "95 percent" of the time hands-free. However, that program was reportedly cancelled , with GM now fully focusing on Super Cruise.

GM offers 15 vehicles with Super Cruise, including pickups, SUVs, the Bolt EUV and all Cadillac models. Up until now, it's largest Super Cruise expansion took place in 2022 , growing from 200,000 to 400,000 miles.

GM is expanding its hands-free Super Cruise system to 400,000 miles of roads

gm super cruise expansion map

GM will soon allow drivers to use Super Cruise on more than 400,000 miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada, doubling access to its hands-free driver assistance system as it pushes to keep apace of its rivals.

Drivers with vehicles equipped with Super Cruise today can only use the system on about 200,000 miles of divided interstates. Notably, this new expansion will loosen those restrictions and give drivers access to Super Cruise on undivided highway roads such as the Pacific Coast Highway, the Trans-Canada Highway and U.S. Route 66.

Super Cruise uses a combination of lidar map data, high-precision GPS, cameras and radar sensors, as well as a driver attention system, which monitors the person behind the wheel to ensure they’re paying attention. When the system is activated, it will accelerate or brake to maintain a selected following distance from a vehicle ahead, steer to keep its lane position and on select models, automatic change lanes to pass slower traffic.

Unlike Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance system, users of Super Cruise do not need to have their hands on the wheel. However, their eyes must remain directed straight ahead.

The automaker said Wednesday that an over-the-air software update later this year will expand the network for new vehicles built on its new vehicle intelligence platform (VIP) electrical architecture. The upgrade is free on these models. VIP architected vehicles with available Super Cruise currently include the Cadillac Escalade, CT4 and CT5, the GMC Hummer EV and Sierra, and the Chevrolet Silverado. Super Cruise will soon be available on the 2023 model year Cadillac LYRIQ, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban.

GM has been slower than rival Tesla in making its advanced driver assistance accessible. Tesla’s ADAS that is branded Autopilot comes standard in its four models and works on most roads. GM has restricted access, not just where it can be used, but in what vehicles as well.

When GM launched Super Cruise, it was only available in one Cadillac model — the full-size CT6 sedan — and restricted to divided highways. GM eventually added Super Cruise to other Cadillac models, including the CT4, CT5 and Escalade as well as other brands such as Chevrolet and GMC.

GM is also working on a new, more capable hands-free driving assistance system product called Ultra Cruise that it plans to roll out in 2023 and will be able to handle 95% of all driving scenarios and eventually be used on every paved road in the U.S. and Canada.
