Arizona

Visit a reconstructed 1890s-era ghost town.

Goldfield Ghost Town is a great place to experience western American history. Goldfield is about 35 miles southeast of Phoenix, just outside of Apache Junction, Arizona. In 1892, Goldfield was established on a hill near the Superstition and Goldfield Mountains. Goldfield was a bustling gold mining town. At one point, this town was able to support a population of 4,000 people. It had a general store, post office, several saloons, a blacksmith, a meat market, a schoolhouse, a boarding house, a hotel, and a brewery. After the gold rush was over, Goldfield began to see a sharp decline. Between 1910 and 1926, there were several attempts to revive the town, but the mines never produced more gold.

There are plenty of fun, family-friendly activities here, such as panning for gold, touring the mines, and horseback riding. "Mayor" Bob Schoose is the co-founder and owner of the Goldfield Ghost Town. Along with the steak house and saloon, the town has a Coffee Cantina & Bakery, a general store, and the Miner's Grill & Ice Cream Shop. Please note that leashed pets are welcome outside but cannot enter the shops or restaurants with you. If you're into ghost towns, stop by Goldfield the next time you're passing through Arizona.

A Guide to Visiting Goldfield Ghost Town in Arizona

A Wild West town located near the Superstition Mountains with an underground mine, a narrow-gauge train, a saloon and gunfights too! You will see all this and more on a visit to the Goldfield Ghost Town in Arizona. Once a bustling gold mining town, it was eventually abandoned. The town today offers a fun experience that will take you back in time to the riveting days of the Wild West.

Strolling through the dusty land will give you an idea of what it was like to live there many years ago, but there are also some fun activities too including train rides, horseback rides, underground mine walk, and ziplining that make this a great tour.

History of Goldfield Ghost Town

Back in the 1890s, Goldfield area situated on a hilltop close to the Superstition Mountains and Goldfield Mountains literally struck gold. Since the metal ore was of a very high grade, it attracted miners and people from all over. Soon, a town developed in 1893 with an official post office, saloons, a general store, a boarding house, brewery, blacksmith shop, and a school. It had all the essential amenities that a town would need for its residents. Unfortunately, a few years down the line, things went downhill in the town as the gold became scarce and its quality dropped. Miners deserted the town in search of better mining prospects. Although an attempt was made to revive the town in the 1920s, the negligible gold output resulted in the town being abandoned again in a few years.

But, Goldfield Ghost Town got another chance and it happened due to the efforts of the enterprising Robert F. “Bob” Schoose. With a deep interest in ghost towns and mining, he bought a few acres of this area in Arizona and transformed it into a Wild West tourist spot. It started with a mining tunnel and a snack bar and eventually developed into much more.

Things to Do in Goldfield Ghost Town

A visit here is all about discovering the history of the place, experiencing life back then, and enjoying fun activities for adults and children. People walking around in period costumes give an authentic feel to the town. It has a great restaurant too. I spent about four hours here soaking in the ambience of the Wild West. There is no entry cost so you can walk around the town freely but a fee is required for some attractions and activities if you choose to experience them.

  • Goldfield Mine Tours / / Step back in time to more than a 100 years ago as you go on an underground mine tour. One of my favorite activities in the town, it gave a good insight into life in the mines. The knowledgeable guides will fill you in on the history of the mine, the equipment and processes used. Each tour lasts for 25 minutes and it is a very interesting activity to do in Goldfield Ghost Town.
  • Superstition Narrow Gauge Railroad / / A fun ride all the way! A train ride on the Superstition Narrow Gauge Railroad is an entertaining experience. Sit in the passenger car as the train takes you around the town for a 20-minute ride. During the ride, an engineer will narrate the fascinating history of Goldfield and the area around. You will get some information about the Superstition Mountains too.
  • Goldfield Gunfighters / / Clear the streets and take cover! It’s a gunfight! Well, not a real one but a staged act that makes you feel like you are on the sets of a western. You can watch this activity for free along the boardwalks. After the gunfight is announced, cowboys take over the street. Watch the action between troublemakers who are up to no good and men trying to maintain law and order– all ending in a gunfight battle. The gunshots made me jump out of my skin the first time around. Gunfight re-enactments take place every Saturday and Sunday by the hour. Complete entertainment!

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

Ziplining / /  A recent addition at Goldfield Ghost Town, this activity is popular with both adults and kids. While walking around or taking a train ride is one way to see the town, I could get a whole new perspective of the area by trying the zipline experience. Zip along and see the town, mountains and desert views from up in the air. An enjoyable ride, indeed.

Superstition’s O.K. Corral Stables / /  When you are out in the wild west, a horse ride is just what you need to feel one with the landscape. Explore the mountainous area on horseback accompanied by a guide. The Superstition and Goldfield mountains have a rich history and scenic trails – discover it with rides that last an hour, a half day or an entire day. Ride into the wilderness!

Other Amazing Attractions / /  Drop by the  Mystery Shack  to experience all things strange and mysterious or shoot at interactive targets at the  Eagle Eye Shooting Gallery . If you enjoy looking at reptiles, the Superstition Reptile Exhibit is an interesting place. Another fun activity is  Gold Panning  at Prospector’s Palace. Learn about the proper process to pan for gold aided by a guide. You might even find tiny slivers of gold. And if you feel hungry, grab a snack, relish a meal and enjoy a drink at the  Mammoth Steakhouse & Saloon  – sandwiches, burgers, fries, steak and more. Enjoy an ice cream at the parlor. There are shops selling all kinds of souvenirs too!

Unfortunately, I was not able to go in the church. I will have to go back on a Sunday.

Goldfield Ghost Town: Gold & The Supes.

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

Isolated in the middle of the Arizona desert, the rough and tumble Wild West town of Goldfield was the happenin’ place in its heyday. According to our mine tour guide, Goldfield still has the most unmined gold of any mine in the entire world . If true, it may be due to a 1897 flood, which essentially forever ended mining in the area. Even though there was much gold to be mined, they couldn’t pump the water out without collapsing the whole mine. As what typically happened when old western mines closed, all of Goldfield residents left within 24 hours, with the post office following a year later in 1898. This officially doomed Goldfield to the fate of “ghost town”. Much later in the 1980’s, the EPA made the decision final by finally officially declaring that they could not suck out the water.

Located right at the base of the infamous The Superstitions: The Most Haunted Mountain Range in America. , near the Lost Dutchman State Park, at 4650 N Mammoth Mine Rd, Apache Junction, Arizona , it’s open daily from 10am to 5pm . It’s right on the outskirts of the greater Phoenix area, about 45 minutes from downtown. From Mesa or Chandler, it’s only approximately 35 minutes. It’s a very doable day trip for all of Phoenix. Apache Junction is a far more rural, deserty, ranching type of place. Aside from Goldfield, it’s a mecca for hikers, campers, off-roaders, and horseback riders.

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

Built in 1892, at one point the town had up to 4,000 residents and 28 buildings. At the time, Goldfield was bigger than Phoenix and Mesa combined, which is hard to imagine these days. It was even strongly considered for the state capital of Arizona. However, when an old west town goes ghost, it happens very quickly, almost instantaneously, as life was rough back then with zero time to waste. Unfortunately for Goldfield, it went from hero to zero almost overnight once the mines flooded.

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

13 years later, in 1910, they did attempt to reopen Goldfield, as both a mine and a town. This was after several new mines opened nearby, plus a mill and cyanide plant were built. They renamed it Youngberg after George U. Young, the secretary of Arizona and acting governor at the time. Sadly, as was the fate of the first set of mines, the new mines once again flooded, and by 1926, it was once again a ghost town. When it was bought years later by a sole individual, he renamed it back to Goldfield again and restored it to its former Wild West mining glory – but this time as an attraction.

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

While many of the buildings had to be rebuilt or refurbished, there are many authentic pieces of mining equipment still at Goldfield. These include a 19 th -century “Tower” ; the 19 th century Goldfield Railroad Station ; the only 3-foot narrow-gauge railroad still in operation in Arizona; a 1890 Porter 0-4-0 (locomotive); the Bordello (Brothel); a barn/stable ; an abandoned Spanish-style house ; the Livery ; the Goldfield Museum ; the water tank , a “poop wagon” used in the mines that I’m sure has a more proper name, and much more. Obviously, the mine used for tours is a complete reconstruction and NOT a real mine (as you’ll recall, those all flooded and are impossible to access). Thankfully, per our guide, the creator of the reconstructed mine took great care in matching all of the details, big and small. I will touch on the mine tour in more detail in just a bit!

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

There are many attractions and things to do inside Goldfield, with some including:

  • The Superstition Zipline ($12 per person, $6 for a 2 nd ride)
  • The Superstition Scenic Narrow-Gauge Railroad ($10 adults, $9 seniors, $7 children ages 5-12, 4 and under is free)
  • The Goldfield Mine Tour (priced the same as the railroad tour above)
  • Goldfield Ghost Town’s Walking Ghost Tour ($25 adults, $22 seniors, $15 for kids 12 and under)
  • Apache Trail Tours (via jeeps; call the office for rates and tour packages)
  • Superstition Reptile Exhibit ($6 for adults, $4 for kids 17 & under, and children under 6 are free with an adult)
  • Goldfield Gunfighters (free shows every hour on Sat. & Sun. from High Noon to 4pm)
  • The Eagle Eye Shooting Gallery
  • The Mystery Shack
  • Goldfield’s Historic Museum
  • Gold Panning and Gem Sluicing at Prospector’s Palace

So, as can be seen, while it’s not as big as Calico or as artsy as Jerome ( Jerome, Arizona: “Too Strong to Die”. ) there is still plenty to do at Goldfield, and it’s a lot of fun for adults and kids alike.

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

As mentioned, this is not a real mine but a reconstructed one. You “go down” on an elevator, which is really only like 10 feet but built to simulate going down 100’s of feet like the real miners would have done. Once you make it to the “bottom”, the tour officially begins.

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

I enjoyed the mine tour, as our guide was extremely knowledgeable and gave much insight into the miners rough lives and job. He went into detail about the conditions they endured daily just to make $1 a day. We learned that they had to mine for gold in complete darkness , for hours and hours, because electricity was just being invented at the time. The miners were given only 3 small candles per day, which were to be used only for emergencies and when they needed to attach the dynamite to the walls to blast for more gold. Other than that, it was total darkness.

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

In fact, the miners were so concerned with preserving their candles, that they would use the poop wagon in complete darkness too… and in front of everyone, right next to where they were working. Believe it or not, the job of the “poop man” was a coveted job, although it has to be one of the worst jobs I’ve ever heard of. Not only would he have to walk around in darkness all day, being of service to miners who needed to “go”, but he had to scoop out the excrement multiple times a day… by hand… with only a small scoop that looked like a soup ladle. Nonetheless, apparently this was a sought after gig because 1) he got paid $3 a day, and 2) he got to see sunlight multiple times a day when he exited the mine to clear the waste from the trolley.

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

The guide also told us the story of the first time the mine collapsed, after the “checker” came down in the morning to check how solid and supportive the beams were, and one morning his luck ran out. The beams was NOT strong and supportive, and the whole mine collapsed. The other miners immediately began to dig him out, but it was taking days. The trapped miner had a small bell that he would ring daily to let the others know he was still alive and to keep digging. One day, the bell stopped ringing, so the miners assumed he had died and they stopped digging. After returning home for a small reprieve, they came back a few days later to resume digging. That’s when they heard the bell again and as it turns out, the miner had simply fallen asleep. They eventually got him out a couple weeks later and he had lost a significant amount of weight. He said that the only reason he did not starve to death was because he slowly ate his daily allotted 3 candles.

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

Mystery Shack

As far as mystery shacks go, Goldfield’s is a typical one, complete with the broomstick standing straight up, a ramp that makes you feel like you’re walking “uphill” when you’re walking “downhill”, the pool balls that all go “up” into a specific hole, swinging chandeliers, and a chair you can’t get up from. It looks almost identical to the mystery shack in Calico Ghost Town: Welcome to the Wild West. , both on the outside and on the inside. If you have a weak stomach or get easily dizzy, steer clear!

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

We went on the mystery shack tour with the exact same crowd we went through the mining tour with, due to the fact that they only offer the tours at certain times and it’s easier to just hop to the next one. Truthfully, it felt like there was probably one too many people on the tour, as the mystery shack is a bit small, and can easily feel overcrowded. Just something to keep in mind.

Even if you understand the physics behind these shacks, it’s still weird and fun to experience. Be forwarded, it can leave you feeling “off” the rest of the day, since it messes so much with your equilibrium, depth perception, and stomach. It certainly messed with mine 🤢 I felt “ugh” for the rest of the day. So again, if you’re easily affected by things that make you feel dizzy or turns your stomach, you may want to skip the Mystery Shack!

goldfield ghost town and mine tours inc. updates

Overall, if you’re ever in Phoenix or “the Valley” area, I highly recommend a visit to Goldfield Ghost Town, either for an all-day adventure or you can split the day, also taking a hike in the Supes. You’ll still even make it back in time for dinner. Goldfield and the beautiful, mystical Supes that loom just a stones throw away make it a fun, magical place. Step on back in time and come see it for yourself!

It's a tourist trap but that's to be expected in my humble opinion...sort of a mini-Tombstone with the gunfight; I thought that was actually pretty cool because of the campiness of the skit, it reminded me of all those Gunsmoke episodes I used to watch as a kid. Ate at the Mammoth Steakhouse and Saloon, I ordered the Mammoth burger and have to say that it was really tasty. The place was packed and had that picnic feel to it. I'll have to try a steak next time we swing by. The Bordello was interesting. The lady that gave us the tour was very nice and knew her history. I was impressed by the amount of trivia she knew for that time period. Overall, Goldfield was a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We'll have to try the zipline next time. Yes, I know ziplines were not a crucial part of old Arizona's mining industry, but it's there, and I'll confess that I want to try it probably more than my kid.

Fun for the whole family! This tourist attraction included gun shooting, mining for gold, zip lining, a train, and much more! It was a lovey day at the ghost town, they are also pet friendly :) Note--bring water and sunscreen as it can get quite hot. Also, wear closed toe shoes because the dusty terrain is hard to navigate.

I took my mom, sister, niece, and nephew here when they visited from out of state and we had a blast. We did the mine , the house, and the train. They have cute little shops and plenty of photo opps. I would say the house was the coolest thing we saw there and I would definitely do that again. I do caution it is a tourist trap and it can get pricey but we spent a few good hours there and had a great time. They don't have good food, so I would recommend eating before or bringing a little snack.

Free tourist attraction. Can't get any better than that! Of course you can pay to amplify your experience with horse back riding, train rides and other little goodies. My parents loved visiting this place and enjoyed the photo opportunities. We plan on coming back with my nephews to enjoy the train rides and other activities.

Extremely rude owner that has zero customer service skills, uses profanity in front of small children and treats the patrons of his business with a lot of disrespect! Today we visited Goldfield ghost town for a few hours, ate lunch ($63) bought candy and ice cream ($28) and bought some souvenirs for the kids ($34) as we were leaving we were taking a picture of our niece in the parking lot next to a cactus and the owner pulled up screaming that he wanted to see our receipt.... I guess this guy is so hard up for money (even tho he just raped us for two hours) that he actually charges people to take pictures in the fricking parking lot!? I tried to have a conversation with him to understand why he felt it necessary to charge people for taking pictures in the parking lot and he said because it's his parking lot and just drove off screaming more obscenities... Maybe he should spend less time day drinking and more time treating his customers better so people would return back for decades like I have. For the cost of whatever he wanted to charge for taking a picture in the parking lot he has lost my entire family as customers! It's going to take charging for a bunch of parking lot photos to recoup what we would bring him in sales through out the year!!! B-Y-E-...... as he so rudely put it! I highly recommend that if you are from out of town or bringing someone into town and want to show them what a real western town looks like that you avoid this place and try Rawhide or Rockin R Ranch. At least the owners at those establishments respect their customers and don't lose sleep over a picture in their parking lot!

I am staying in the south of Phoenix doing some COVID work at a hospital, had a day off and decided to go for a hike on Supersition Mountain. Beautiful day, awesome hike. Decided to stop at this cute little town. People around, by no means a COVID ghost town lol. I went to the saloon after the hike and found out clearly they were not interested in customers even in a pandemic. I went inside and asked if I had to seat myself and received a "yea", I walked outside and sat down at a table. In the course of 15-20 minutes two other families sat down, both were waited on immediately, one before they even got in their chairs. I attempted to get the attention of one of the servers who pointedly ignored me. I was so mad I just left, it is humiliating and frustrating to simply be ignored. It is nothing more than a tourist trap that is so arrogant they don't need business when businesses are going under all over the country because of this pandemic. Is it that hard to wait on your customers, to acknowledge them and maybe treat them with a little respect. I am not a demanding person, but this infuriated me.

Fun tourist area for the family, gun fighting, candy shop, museum, zip line and food. Check out groupon and back of frys receipt for deals. Train ride and jeep tours also available. Fun and historical place to walk around. Have the penny machine for collecting.

Went in with and open mind and had a Great experience. They do a pretty great job of making a fun time out of the history of the town. It was educational, entertaining and surrounded by an incredible landscape.

Cute little western town. Food was okay, the mining tour was interesting, and the train ride was scenic. Tour guides were all entertaining and the gun show was fun to watch! If going with kids, I'd recommend planning on not bringing the stroller. You can't bring them on the tours, it's kind of hilly, and the restaurant was hard to get in and out with a stroller. We ended up putting ours in the car and I wore the baby in the carrier and my husband walked with or carried our 4yo. Overall, a fun family day that I'd recommend to other families!

It's for tourists so just know that going in. It's not a "ghost town" as in an abandoned town. It is shops and attractions. We went later in the day and didn't pay for any of the attractions but it doesn't cost anything to just stop by so go for it.

Goldfield Ghost Town & Mine Tours

Situated atop a small hill between the Superstition Mountains and the Goldfield Mountains, the settlement of Goldfield got its start in 1892 when very rich, high grade gold ore was found in the area. A town soon sprang up and on October 7, 1893 it received its first official post office.

Apache Trail – Sunset Route This “official” find, coupled with the legend of the Lost Dutchman Mine, which had been circulating for years, led plenty of new miners to the area and in no time, the town boasted three saloons, a boarding house, a general store, brewery, blacksmith shop, butcher shop, and a school. For five years the town boomed until some 1,500 souls were residing in the burgeoning city.

Las Vegas Haunted Tour

Highest review.

This is a very cool place to take kids to! We really had a fun time! And pricing isn’t bad! The mine tour was very interesting, the ice cream was delicious & the gun shows go on throughout the day! The train that goes around is pretty informative & it shows the gorgeous Superstition Mountains! The zip line was a lot of fun & again wasn’t over priced! We had a 6 yr old girl & 9 yr old boy & they equally had fun! I highly recommend it!

Do I have to give it even one star? Please don’t waste your time or money by visiting this place. Our family drove here as part of a family reunion with children, grandmother, aunts, cousins. NOBODY enjoyed it. The expensive train ride is worthless. It takes you around the outside of the town painfully slowly to see trash and stacks of lumber. It was so bad, I looked to see if I could just step off of the train to go back inside the town. The employees/owners around the town were rude. Proprietor of gold panning shop was so rude that we left her shop and so did another family with children. The gold panning set-up was like looking in a kitchen sink full of really old dirty water (it was set-up in the counter inside the store). More fun for the children to sit and stare at a wall. Definitely skip the mine. Boring and guide trying to scare the children with talk of scorpions, etc. Entire town is a complete rip-off and nothing is authentic.

Zeen is a next generation WordPress theme. It’s powerful, beautifully designed and comes with everything you need to engage your visitors and increase conversions.
