Christie worries about Trump ‘vendetta tour’ in second term

F ormer New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said in an interview published Wednesday that former President Trump’s “vendetta tour” if he wins a second term at the White House is a “scary thing” for the United States.

Christie, who backed Trump during his 2016 presidential run but then ran against him in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, said his biggest fear is that Trump will go after his enemies from the White House and that no one will be able to stop him.

“There’ll be no one around to put guardrails up, and he will be on the vendetta tour against all enemies that he perceives,” Christie said in an interview with The Washington Post . “And that’s a scary thing for the country.”

Despite those feelings about Trump, Christie said he won’t be voting for President Biden in November.

“I don’t think so, no,” Christe said. “President Biden, in my view, is past the sell-by date. Seriously, look at him. If the American people are stupid enough to nominate these two guys, doesn’t mean I have to be stupid, too.”

He said Biden has not called him to ask for his support.

“It’s pretty stupid for him not to,” said Christie, who ended his White House run in January after campaigning as the most outspoken anti-Trump candidate in the GOP primary.

The former New Jersey governor was toying with a possible third-party run with No Labels, a centrist ballot-access organization, but eventually turned down the possibility as he did not see a path forward.

“Nobody that we put up, including me, got higher than 17 percent. So what happens is [voters] love the idea of someone other than Trump or Biden, but then … once you [put forward an alternative], they don’t want to hear it,” Christie told the Post. “We looked at it pretty closely. There was no path to winning.”

Shapiro Administration Continues Small Business Week Tour in Northampton County, Highlights Governor’s Budget Proposal to Invest in Our Downtowns and Main Streets

  • April 29, 2024

From Northampton to Luzerne to Somerset counties, the Shapiro Administration is celebrating Small Business Week and encourages Pennsylvanians to show their support for their local downtowns and main streets.

Supporting small businesses and main streets is an essential component of the Governor’s economic development strategy and 2024-25 budget proposal —which includes a total of $600 million in economic development investments .

Bethlehem, PA – Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Deputy Secretary of Business Finance Mandy Book today toured downtown Bethlehem in Northampton County with local leaders to emphasize the important impact small businesses have on their local and the Commonwealth’s economies and encouraged Pennsylvanians to support their local downtowns and main streets throughout Small Business Week ― April 28 through May 4, 2024.

Today’s Small Business Week celebration highlights Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposed investments in our small businesses, Main Streets, and local communities. As part of the Governor’s 2024-25 budget that puts forth a bold vision to create economic opportunity all across Pennsylvania, he is calling for a $25 million investment in the proposed Main Street Matters program.

Small Business Week celebrates the contributions that our small businesses make to the culture and fabric of the communities in which they reside. Since day one, Governor Shapiro and his Administration have been working aggressively to create economic opportunity for all Pennsylvanians and uplift small businesses like the ones DCED toured today in Bethlehem.

“The innovative small businesses and hard-working entrepreneurs we visited today along Main Street in Bethlehem are truly what fuels Pennsylvania’s economy,” said Deputy Secretary Book. “When small businesses thrive, so do our communities. That’s why Governor Shapiro is so passionate about calling for smart investments that strengthen our downtowns and communities through the proposed Main Street Matters program.”

Deputy Secretary Book was joined by local leaders for the event as they visited a number of the city’s businesses, including: the Moravian Book Shop , The Flying Egg restaurant, Seasons Olive Oil and Vinegar Taproom , Donegal Square gift show, and Aardvark sports store.

“Bethlehem is fortunate to have two thriving and vibrant downtown business districts where our small business owners have cultivated special shopping, dining, and entertainment experiences around our unique colonial and industrial historical assets,” said Bethlehem Mayor William Reynolds. “Governor Shapiro’s Main Street Matters program is a welcome investment that can further support these businesses, which is critical as we seek a World Heritage designation and continue to attract and invite residents and visitors to these areas as the gateways to our city. We are grateful for the Governor’s initiative and his commitment to advancing economic development programs and tools that support diverse communities across Pennsylvania.”

DCED Secretary Rick Siger kicked off small business week last Friday during a tour of downtown New Cumberland in Cumberland County. As part of this year’s Small Business Week, DCED is visiting local businesses all across the Commonwealth: Franklin, Venango County (April 30); Media, Delaware County (May 1); Hazleton, Luzerne County (May 2); and Somerset, Somerset County (May 3).

The celebration of Small Business Week builds upon Governor Shapiro’s commitment to build an economy that works for all. Earlier this year, Governor Shapiro and DCED Secretary Rick Siger launched the Commonwealth’s first Economic Development Strategy in nearly two decades — building on the Shapiro Administration’s work to reignite our economy and build vibrant and resilient regions where small businesses support their local residents and communities.

The Governor’s proposed 2024-2025 budget calls for significant investments directly tied back to his ten-year strategy, including:

  • $25 million for the Main Street Matters program.
  • $500 million in PA SITES funding to bring more commercial and industrial sites to Pennsylvania.
  • $20 million to support large-scale innovation and leverage Pennsylvania’s best-in-class research and development assets.
  • $3.5 million to create and launch the Pennsylvania Regional Economic Competitiveness Challenge to incentivize regional growth.

If funded, these initiatives will complement the existing technical and financial assistance provided by DCED and our partner networks throughout Pennsylvania, including:

  • PA Business One-Stop Shop : Your first stop for business development in Pennsylvania. The One-Stop Shop team assists businesses at every stage, from planning and startup to operation and expansion.
  • Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) : With 15 centers serving all 67 counties, SBDCs equip entrepreneurs and small business owners with the knowledge to make informed decisions about starting and growing their businesses. These centers receive partial funding from DCED.
  • Dedicated Funding Programs: Pennsylvania offers funding programs tailored to support small and diverse businesses through low-interest loan programs such as the Pennsylvania Minority Business Development Authority (PMBDA) and the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) .
  • Ben Franklin Technology Partners : These partners offer funding, business expertise, and technical support to both early-stage, technology-based firms and established manufacturers.
  • PA Office of International Business Development : For small businesses looking to expand into international markets, this office provides export assistance.

Breaking news, connecticut gov. ned lamont had nearly 200 trees ‘illegally’ cut behind $7.5m home for ‘better view’ — infuriating neighbors: ‘chainsaw massacre’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Hypocrisy’s the root of the problem.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont had thousands of trees and bushes illegally chopped behind his sprawling Greenwich home — despite publicly championing a statewide effort to plant more conifers, according to angry neighbors and other sources.

The wealthy 70-year-old Democrat was hit with a citation for cutting down more than 180 trees in a protected wetland area to allegedly get a better view of a pond from his $7.6 million abode, CT Insider reported Tuesday .

trees

“[It’s a] chainsaw massacre,” land use attorney John Tesei, who represents nearby property owners INCT LLC, said according to the outlet.

“I’ve never seen anything, overall, like this, ever.”

“Our clients are deeply disturbed and devastated,” he said at a March 25 wetlands meeting .

Lamont allegedly hired workers to axe the beloved sugar maples, beech trees and pignut hickories without permits on several acres behind his seven-bedroom manse in early November, sources from the city’s Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Agency told the paper.

Some of the trees were 40 feet tall — and a vital part of the delicate ecosystem on the wooded banks of a small river, the sources said.

Lamont

Fred Jacobsen, a property manager for privately-owned forest lands in Greenwich’s Midcountry, heard a chainsaw buzzing near the governor’s home on Nov. 9 and called police, he said.

“It was a coordinated destruction of the entire ecosystem in that area,” Jacobsen said at the meeting.

The saw-wielding workers also crossed a property line, “trespassing” onto land owned by INCT LLC, a Delaware-based company, staffers with the wetland agency said in documents.

“The Lamonts appear to be the ones that hired the contractor,” Beth Evans, the town’s director of environmental affairs who advises the wetland agency, told CT Insider.

Lamont's $7.6 million house in Greenwich.

Lamont, his neighbors the Viks and the Ashton Drive Association were all hit with citations for wetland  violations in Greenwich, according to the paper.

“It’s no coincidence that the cutting opened up a very wide view of the lake for the personal aesthetic benefit and viewing enjoyment of two dwellings, Gov. Lamont and the Viks,” said Peter Thorén, an executive of INCT LLC said at the meeting.

He called the hacked trees an “illegal invasion.”

Greenwich’s wetland association ultimately issued a cease-and-correct order on Nov. 28, which was sent to the Lamonts, the Viks and the Ashton Drive Association. It wasn’t immediately clear if the politician would be charged a fine.

The workers hired by Lamont allegedly trespassed into a neighboring property owned by INCT LLC.

No criminal charges were filed over the alleged trespassing, the Greenwich Police told the paper.

But the conifer-slashing flies in the face of an environmentally friendly plan the governor announced last April to plant thousands of trees in dense urban parts of the state.

At the time, Lamont sought a slice of the $1 billion in federal funding for urban forestry programs allocated by the Inflation Reduction Act, commissioner for the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Katie Dykes, said in April 2023 .

trees

Locals now want the greenery-chopping governor to replace the dead trees and shrubs.

“The perpetrators should restore the entire area as closely as possible to the way it was,” Jacobsen said.

Lamont, a former cable television entrepreneur and Harvard University grad, raked in more than $54 million in annual income in 2021, according to the CT Mirror.

His 2.5-acre abode at 4 Ashton Drive is valued at $7.57 million, according to redfin.com .

“This is a dispute between the homeowners association and one of the neighbors,” a rep for Lamont told The Post Wednesday. She claims the HOA was given the citation, not the governor.

“The association and the neighbors are working it out,” Lamont told CT Insider.

A rep from the Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Agency declined to comment, saying the matter would be discussed at a public hearing Monday afternoon.

The conifer clash echos a similar battle that broke out in June over 32 chopped trees in New Jersey . In that case, the culprit was fined $13,000.

FACT SHEET: Vice President Harris Kicks Off Nationwide Economic Opportunity Tour in   Atlanta

Vice President Harris’s visit highlights recent $158 million Reconnecting Communities Award for The Stitch project to reconnect Atlanta neighborhoods and drive economic growth

Vice President Harris to meet with small business owners who are taking advantage of Biden-Harris Administration resources to help launch and scale their businesses

Today, Vice President Kamala Harris is kicking off a nationwide Economic Opportunity Tour with a stop in Atlanta, GA. During this multi-state tour, the Vice President will be traveling across the country to highlight how the Biden-Harris Administration has built economic opportunity, supported communities, and delivered for the American people. The tour reflects President Biden and Vice President Harris’ commitment to invest in all of America, create an economy in which every person has the freedom to thrive, and help underserved entrepreneurs access historic investments available locally to launch and scale their businesses, build wealth, and strengthen their communities. While in Atlanta, Vice President Harris will highlight how the city is receiving $158 million for “The Stitch” project to reconnect midtown to downtown Atlanta through the Biden-Harris Administration’s first-of-its-kind Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Program . When constructed, the Downtown Connector sliced through communities like Sweet Auburn, cutting it off from Downtown and displacing hundreds of homes and businesses in primarily Black working-class neighborhoods. The Stitch project will create a 14-acre mixed-use development cap on three-quarters of the Downtown Connector—increasing access to jobs, housing, education, and healthcare and creating public parks, plazas, and surface streets for walking and biking. The Stitch is only one of the projects awarded across more than 40 states as part of the announcement of $3.3 billion from the Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Program, which is funded by the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act. This program will help rectify the damage done by past transportation projects – decades of harmful urban renewal projects and legacy policy decisions in the buildout of the Federal highway system that the Department of Transportation estimates displaced over a million people and businesses – while driving economic growth in underserved communities and helping advance racial equity. The Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Program is yet another way the Biden-Harris Administration is advancing economic opportunity, while taking on the legacy of harm in communities that have grappled with decades of disinvestment or economic distress. The Administration is focused on supporting economic comebacks in communities across the country; especially those that have suffered from decades of disinvestment. The President and Vice President’s strategy for investing in all of America has helped lead to a historically strong and equitable recovery, and a small business boom that is lifting communities across the country. Under the Biden-Harris Administration we’ve seen the three strongest years for new business applications on record. At the same time, Black business ownership has grown at its fastest pace in 30 years and the Latino new entrepreneurship rate reaching an all-time high in 2023. Today, the White House released the  Building on the Biden-Harris Small Business Boom  report to celebrate the start of National Small Business week and actions the Administration has taken to deliver for small businesses including:

  • Setting New Records – over $178 billion, representing more than 28% of federal contract spending – in Federal Procurement Dollars Awarded to Small Businesses, including over $76 billion to Small Disadvantaged Businesses in Fiscal Year 2023
  • On pace to nearly double the number of small dollar loans to small businesses in Fiscal Year 2024 thanks to Biden-Harris Administration policies.  Less than one year since implementing policy reforms to increase access to small dollar loans, the Small Business Administration (SBA) is on pace to increase approved 7(a) loans under $150,000 by a third compared to Fiscal Year 2023 and nearly double the number of small loans approved compared to the final year of the previous Administration.
  • Through the American Rescue Plan’s State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI), Treasury has approved over $8 billion in SSBCI capital support for small businesses  that is expected to catalyze at least $10 in private investment for each dollar of SSBCI capital funding.
  • On track to deliver more than $250 billion to more than 500,000 small businesses through SBA’s lending programs by the end of the decade, meeting Biden-Harris Administration commitment . Since President Biden and Vice President Harris took office, SBA has taken numerous steps to expand access to capital – including finalizing rules to increase small dollar lending, expanding programs that help connect traditionally underserved businesses with resources, and revamping its Lender Match portal – leading to the delivery of nearly $124 billion in financing to small businesses through its 7(a), 504, and microloan programs to date.

Additionally, as part of her economic opportunity tour stop in Atlanta, the Vice President is helping highlight the historic Biden-Harris Administration investments in access to capital and small business support that are available to help entrepreneurs scale and grow their businesses in Georgia, including:

  • With a $65 million investment from the American Rescue Plan (ARP), the  Georgia Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing (Georgia AIM) Coalition , led by the Georgia Institute of Technology, is driving the equitable development and deployment of innovation and talent in artificial intelligence for manufacturing across Georgia . Built as a network of over 40 partners – including the Technical College System of Georgia, Spelman College, Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs, Georgia Cyber Center at Augusta University, Technology Association of Georgia Education, 21 st  Century Partnership, SW Regional Commission, University of Georgia and others – Georgia AIM is establishing an ecosystem focused on workforce development, technology innovation, and resilience in manufacturing.

Georgia AIM is one of 21 regional coalitions awarded funding through the ARP’s $1 billion  Build Back Better Regional Challenge (BBBRC)  – led by the Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration and the most impactful regional economic development competition in decades. These regional coalitions are growing critical industries that will strengthen regional economies, promote inclusive and equitable growth, and create thousands of good-paying jobs in industries of the future such as clean energy, next-generation manufacturing, and biotechnology. Across the nation, BBBRC projects are dedicating $140 million to help increase new business growth and entrepreneurial activity and $100 million to help small and midsized businesses adopt new processes and enter new markets.

  • Through five lending and equity programs, Georgia’s ARP-funded State Small Business Credit Initiative is expected to deliver close to $200 million in capital support to Georgia small businesses and catalyze roughly $2 billion in private funding.  Entrepreneurs in Georgia can  apply  through state-approved lenders to access these programs.

Georgia’s SSBCI program is part of the President and Vice President’s historic nearly $10 billion nationwide investment in capital access for small businesses through the Treasury Department’s ARP-funded SSBCI, which is expected to leverage $10 in private capital for every $1 of SSBCI capital and support roughly forty-six states and territories committing nearly $3 billion from SSBCI to equity-based financing programs, including over $1.4 billion through partnerships with private venture capital funds – the single largest infusion of federal funding for equity participation in early-stage small businesses in history. These investments are expected to catalyze over $30 billion in additional private investment and follow-on funding over the decade that will help underserved entrepreneurs tap into a critical source of capital for business development and wealth creation that has traditionally suffered from some of the most restrictive barriers to access.

  • The ARP-funded Capital Readiness Program (CRP) is helping the Urban League of Greater Atlanta to deliver incubator and accelerator services through its Entrepreneurship Center to historically underserved entrepreneurs  that are starting or operating enterprises in high-growth industries including healthcare, climate-resilient technology, infrastructure, and transportation and logistics. Capital Readiness programing is helping underserved entrepreneurs get the mentoring, coaching, and guidance in relationship building needed to help prepare for, secure, and deploy capital.

The Urban League of Greater Atlanta was one of the 43 winners of the $125 million CRP awards competition announced by Vice President Harris in August of 2023. This critical funding, administered by the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), is the largest-ever direct Federal investment in small business incubators and accelerators of its kind and the largest initiative in the over 50-year history of the MBDA.

  • Three Georgia-based Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) received over $125 million in Emergency Capital Investment Program (ECIP) investments to increase their lending and investments to support small businesses and consumers in their communities , including two minority depository institutions (MDIs): Citizens Trust Bank in Atlanta and the Carver Financial Corporation in Savannah. These investments, stemming from funding Vice President Harris secured during her time in the Senate, are supporting low- and moderate-income community financial institutions across the country in providing loans, grants, and forbearance for small businesses, minority-owned businesses, and consumers, especially in low-income and underserved communities. Nationally, Treasury projects that the more than $8.57 billion invested in 175 federally-insured depository institutions that are CDFIs or MDIs through ECIP may increase lending in Hispanic communities by nearly $58 billion and in Black communities by up to $80 billion over the next decade.
