The diverse Ionian Islands

Scattered off the western coastline of central Greece and to the south of Peloponnese, the Ionian archipelago comprises large and small islands. The group consists of 14 islands in total . However, only 7 of them are the largest and most popular islands of the group:

  • Zakynthos or Zante is home to the worldwide famous Navagio (Shipwreck) beach , gorgeous cliffs, and lush landscapes.
  • Ithaca , the home of Odysseus (Homer's Odyssey), is famous for its many waterfalls. Hop on the ferry from Patras to Ithaca in 3.5 hours or from the port of Kefalonia in 25 minutes.
  • Corfu , with heavenly pine-framed beaches and the popular Liston Square, is the capital of the Ionian islands. The Igoumenitsa - Corfu ferry will take you to the island in less than 1.5 hours .
  • Kefalonia is known for the amazing quality of its local wines , idyllic beaches, glittering caves, and fresh seafood. Take the ferry from the port of Patras and reach the port of Sami in less than 3.5 hours , or catch a ferry from Kyllini to Kefalonia (Poros) .
  • Lefkada is famed for its stunning, white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, popular among windsurfers .
  • Paxi (or Paxos) is a small island with the picturesque, little capital of Gaios . Jump on the ferry from Igoumenitsa to Paxi and explore the heavenly beaches of Paxi.
  • Kythira , with the Venetian Castle above the Chora of Kythira, the island's capital.

You will need at least 4 days to explore each of the larger islands of Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Zante, while you can spend a day on the smaller ones. For the larger islands, it is best to rent a car or a scooter to get around in total freedom and explore Venetian castles, ancient churches and secret coves.

You can also go island hopping and spend a day exploring Antikythera , Antipaxi, Ereikousa, Mathraki, Othonoi, Meganisi, or Strofades, which are the lesser-known islands of the Ionian archipelago.

The best time to visit the Ionian Islands is from June to September when the weather is sunny and warm. Especially, during July and August, the temperatures are high and the water is just perfect for summer dives and worry goodbyes.

Tip : the average budget for two people visiting the Ionian Islands is €200 per day. This budget includes accommodation costs for 2 adults in a hotel, lunch, drinks, and entertainment.

The majestic Cyclades

The Cyclades are undoubtedly the most famous island group in the Aegean Sea. The archipelago includes many islands, so we better focus on the major ones. Among the most popular islands of the Cyclades are:

  • Mykonos  is best known for its photogenic town and its vivid nightlife . You can take the Athens (Piraeus) - Mykonos ferry that runs twice daily, and reach the popular island in just 2,5 hours from Athens with a high-speed ferry.
  • Santorini , the windswept, volcanic island with its blue domes and the scenic white-washed houses. What are you waiting for? Catch the  ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Santorini to enjoy its unique sunsets over the caldera.
  • Milos , with its endless pirate tales, impressive catacombs, picturesque fishing villages, and lunar landscapes . Take the ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Milos and dive into the mesmerizing waters of the instagrammable Sarakiniko beach.
  • Syros , with the picturesque capital of the Cyclades, Ermoupolis and idyllic beaches, is just 3 hours from Athens. Jump on the Athens (Piraeus) - Syros ferry and take a stroll through the labyrinthine streets of Ermoupolis.
  • Paros , renowned for its cosmopolitan character and exciting nightlife, is 3-4 hours if you travel by ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Paros .
  • Naxos , popular among kitesurfers and windsurfers and its impressive Portara doorway  of the ancient Temple of Apollo, is worth the 5-hour trip by ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Naxos .

The weather in the Cyclades during summer is hot with an average maximum temperature of 32°C. However, during July and August, prepare to feel the breeze of the meltemia , strong summer winds that are not the best for sailing boats.

Also, the best way to get around Santorini, Mykonos and Syros is on foot or by bus while Milos, Paros and Naxos are better explored with a car. You will need 4-5 days to fully explore the islands of the archipelago. The Cyclades are the most popular and the most expensive Greek island group. Santorini and Mykonos are the most expensive islands on the list, usually with  €300-€350 a day per person, but you might be also able to find a bit more afforable options there.

Tip : ferries also depart from the port of Piraeus to Crete , reaching the ports of Heraklion and Chania. Athens (Piraeus) - Crete ferries usually depart late in the evening and travel during the night.

The lush Sporades

The Sporades are an archipelago along the east coast of Greece, in the Aegean Sea. They consist of 24 islands , only 4 of which are permanently inhabited:

  • Skiathos is known for its amazing beaches, natural ambiance, cosmopolitan aura, and Skiathos vivid nightlife .
  • Skopelos is the island where the wedding scenes of the famous movie Mamma Mia   were filmed. It has towering cliffs and pine-studded forests and turquoise waters.
  • Alonnisos , with the breathtaking Peristera ancient shipwreck, has the first underwater museum in Greece.
  • Skyros is famous for its lush landscapes and laid-back vibe , its ceramics, handmade furniture, and the special interior architecture of its houses. You can only reach it from the port of Kymi in Evia.

The climate of the Sporades is Mediterranean, with mild autumns and hot, sunny summers . The temperature of the sea is still cold in May and cool in June . However, it becomes high enough for swimming from July to September when it reaches 25°C .

To really appreciate the beauty of these islands and explore them in depth, it would be best to spend at least 3 days in each of them. You can move around by bike , bus , motorbike ,   or even water taxis . You can use the red bus route in Skiathos  that takes you to all the amazing beaches, take a  water taxi to move around the island of Alonissos , or rent a  car to comfortably move around Skopelos .

Related to the ferry routes connecting the Sporades to the mainland, several daily connections are operating from the port of Volos all year round, while there are 3-4 weekly ferries to the Sporades from Thessaloniki during the summer months. There are are also ferries to the Sporades from the ports of Mantoudi in Evia and Agios Konstantinos in Fthiotis.

The Volos - Skiathos  and Volos - Skopelos ferry routes are the most popular one to the Sporades.

Tip : the average daily budget is around €100-120  per person for the Sporades. This budget includes accommodation costs in a hotel, lunch in a local restaurant, drinks, and entertainment.

The magical Dodecanese

Moving on to the Dodecanese islands, meaning "12 islands" in Greek, which in fact are far more than 12 . Among the most popular ones are:

  • Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese. You can take the ferry from Piraeus - Rhodes , and discover its medieval castles , wineries, beaches, and stirring nightlife scene.
  • Kos has a rich history and amazing archaeological sites . To explore the beauties of this island take the Piraeus - Kos ferry .
  • Patmos  is also known as the “Island of the apocalypse”. Take the Piraeus - Patmos ferry , swim on idyllic beaches and explore amazing  hiking trails .
  • Astypalea  is known for its butterfly shap e and castle.
  • Leros , with Italian influences in its architecture since it was once an Italian naval base.
  • Kalymnos is famous for its sponge fishing industry and rock-climbing tourism .

The remaining islands are Agathonisi, Arkoi ,  Chalki , Karpathos , Kasos , Leipsoi , Nisyros , Pserimos ,  Symi , Tilos , and Kastellorizo .

The best time to travel to the Dodecanese islands is from May to September , when the weather is hot and perfect for swimming. If your goal is a chocolate tan under the sun, the warmest month in the Dodecanese is August, with an average maximum temperature of 30°C.

The best way to explore the island group is by scooter . Most islands have narrow streets and medieval alleys, so it is very easy to drive around on two wheels.

Tip : the average daily budget for a trip to the Dodecanese is around  €80-100  per person. However, Rhodes is more expensive than other islands of the archipelago with an average budget of €100-120 per day, including accommodation, food, and entertainment.

The picturesque Saronic Islands

Let’s hop on the next archipelago on our list! The Saronic Islands are located between the peninsula of Attica and the northeastern coasts of Peloponnese. The most popular of this group are:

  • Hydra is famous for its majestic architecture and its pebbly beaches. You can jump on the ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Hydra to explore its captivating character.
  • Spetses is known for its lovely architecture and its nautical and cultural tradition . It is easy to reach by ferry from Piraeus to Spetses , departing daily from Athens.
  • Aegina is popularly known as the island that first minted coins in Greece and is well-known for its delicious peanuts . If you want to try a crepe with divine peanut praline, then catch the Piraeus - Aegina ferry .
  • Poros , with its stunning clock tower built in 1927 and its picturesque architecture, is only 1.5 hours from the port of Piraeus with daily Athens - Poros ferry connections .
  • Agistri  is a small pine-clad island , ideal for nature lovers. If you’re into hiking, take the ferry from Piraeus to Agistri and explore the island’s best hiking trails.

The Saronic Islands, including Dokos and Salamis , are ideal for island day trips from Athens all year round. If you’re thinking of spending a few days in Athens before catching a ferry to the islands, ferry routes from the port of Piraeus to the Saronic Gulf are served with multiple daily departures .

The best period to visit the Saronic Islands is from April to September , so you can enjoy great temperature, sunny days and romantic nights. However, in June the sea is still cool, so for warmer waters , it's best to visit the island group in July and August.

The best way to move around the Saronic Islands is to rent a scooter . However, keep in mind that in Hydra there are no vehicles allowed .

Tip : for a trip to the Saronic Islands, the average budget (hotel, food, entertainment) per person is around €90  per day.

The stone windmill of Hydra, Saronic Islands, Greece

The stone windmill of Hydra overlooking the Saronic Gulf

The amazing North Aegean Islands

The main islands in the northeastern Aegean Sea are:

  • Samos , the birthplace of the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras
  • Ikaria , with its carefree attitude and the panigiria (dance and music festivals in August)
  • Lesbos , the third largest Greek island known for its delicious local products such as cheese and ouzo
  • Lemnos , with a strong husbandry tradition, sun-soaked beaches, and world-famous wine
  • Chios , also known as “the Mastic Island”
  • Samothrace , well-known for its beautiful waterfalls  and natural pools ( vathres )
  • Thassos , known for wine with a distinctive apple aroma and its marble quarries

The best time to travel in the North Aegean Islands is from July to early September , when the weather is hot, and the best way to explore the island group is by scooter . We recommend spending  3-4 days on each island to get to really know the place, explore the stunning beaches, mingle with the locals, and feel the Greek hospitality ( philoxenia ).

Tip : the North Aegean Islands are less expensive than the Cyclades, so if you’re traveling on a budget and looking for a low-cost vacation, you have found the right island group for you. You will need around €70 per day for your stay.

Best Greece cruises: Top 5 ships sailing the Greek isles

Ashley Kosciolek

From ancient mythology to wine and olives, there's a lot to love about Greece . There's something magical about the contrast between the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the ancient ruins and white buildings found on the Greek islands.

The best Greece cruises offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. You might even luck out and snag a visit to places like Turkey or Montenegro, too.

If you're not sure which ships to consider, here's a list of the best cruises to Greece for different kinds of travelers.

Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream

greek isles cruise map

Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.

The vessel isn't the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, and you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newest vessels.

Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances, which means your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)

Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, you might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archaeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archaeological dig.

If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.

Disney Dream sails five-, seven- and nine-night voyages from $322 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady

greek isles cruise map

If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.

Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.

The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed like mermaids, crew dressed like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.

As part of what just might be the best entertainment at sea , nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a drink. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.

If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.

Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 11-night cruises from Athens, starting at $145 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature a mix of stops in Greece (including Santorini and Rhodes and an overnight in Mykonos), Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas

greek isles cruise map

Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Europe to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Explorer of the Seas could be right up your alley.

The vessel is one of Royal Caribbean's oldest ships — it debuted in 2000 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.

The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of six, seven or eight nights from just $85 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. These cruises sail either between Rome and Athens or between Barcelona and Athens, or round-trip from Ravenna (the port for Bologna, Italy). Voyages include calls on Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as ports in Cyprus and Turkey.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star

greek isles cruise map

Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience because it calls on some of the area's smaller ports in addition to Athens.

The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, it can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Monemvasia, a town carved into rock, and Gythion, where you'll find caves and lovely beaches.)

Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.

Among other itineraries, the vessel sails weeklong cruises between Athens and Rome that call on Monemvasia and Gythion in Greece, as well as several ports in Italy. Rates start from $300 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey

greek isles cruise map

Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.

If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flair, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. The ship isn't new, but it's new to the line. Following an extensive refurbishment, and its Celestyal debut in late 2023, it's the youngest member of the line's fleet.

Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.

Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Prices start from $89 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

The best cruises to Greece combine a mix of fascinating destinations with a ship that fits your budget and travel style. If you're still unsure which cruise to choose, check with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent who can help you sort through the options.

Greece Cruises

Map of Greece

The islands are divided into several main groups. Corfu is one of the seven Ionian Islands and it lies off the western coast of the mainland. It's known for historical sites and dramatic cliffs. The largest island is Crete, which lies to the far south of the region. Mykonos and Santorini are both popular spots in the Cyclades islands. Santorini is incredibly picturesque, and most people recognize its stretch of whitewashed buildings on the coast as a quintessential image of Greece.

Cruising to the various islands isn't just convenient, it's a luxury in itself. Travelers have access to some of the most popular cities in the Mediterranean, combined with the ease and comfort of cruising. Many cruises of Greece's islands include stops in other countries. In fact, Venice and Istanbul are the starting point for many cruises. After setting sail from the port of origin, ships cruise to Mykonos, Santorini, Crete, Corfu, Piraeus (the port for Athens) and many more. Your itinerary may also include stops in Italy and Turkey.

10 Best Ports For Greek Islands And Eastern Mediterranean Cruises

by Gary Bembridge · May 3, 2022

gary Athens Greece

I am going to look at and suggest 10 best things to see and do if you’re on Adriatic and Greek islands cruise. It’s a magnificent part of the world and most of the cruises will start at either Venice or in Athens and travel between them. It means you take in parts of mainland Greece, the Greek islands and a couple of stops on the Adriatic coast.

If you’re looking at booking a need to make sure are on your itinerary to have the best way of seeing and doing this part of the world. Make sure you don’t miss any of these incredible places.

greek isles cruise map

Let’s start in Athens, a firm favourite on a Greek islands cruise. You’re either going to embark or disembark in Athens and make sure that you go to the Acropolis. This is an outcrop overlooking the city and on the top are the ruins of most magnificent temples, the most famous of which being the Parthenon which is a temple which was created and built in the honour of the goddess Athena – who is seen as the patron of Athens and really where they got their name from. Also, nearby the Acropolis is the new Acropolis museum, a massive complex with remarkable artefacts.

If you’re going on a cruise that starts or ends in Athens, make sure you build in time to go to the Acropolis.

Since we’ve been talking about important archaeological areas what I’m going to do is talk about some of the really other great and important archaeological sites to see.

greek isles cruise map

Katakolon (Olympia)

One of these is in Katakolon, and the place you go to is Olympia. It’s about an hour or so from Katakolon. If you go on a cruise that’s going to Katakolon make sure you go to Olympia.

Olympia is the site of the original Olympic Games and many of the buildings were built in the honour of the god Zeus, and it is a huge sprawling complex including the huge big stadium where many of the races were run. It’s a fascinating complex and there are two museums nearby.

The one that I would really make sure you get to, which is not far from the entrance into Olympia, is the museum which tells you the whole history of Olympia. Make sure you go to Olympia it is absolutely magnificent. This is another popular stop on Greek Islands cruises.

greek isles cruise map

Crete (Knossos)

Another great place to go if you are interested in culture and art is make sure that your cruise is stopping in Crete and ideally calling at the port of Heraklion. It’s the closest to what’s known as the Palace of Knossos.

The Palace of Knossos is again another big sprawling complex. Some of it has she been reconstructed and it ready was deserted at the end of the Bronze Age. It was the centre of the Minoans and it became very famous for a legend about the Minotaur which allegedly lived in the labyrinth underneath the Palace of Knossos.

But it’s a beautiful place to visit, with history and story. It’s not known why it was deserted when it was such a major structure, but it’s felt that was probably there’s lots of volcanic activity and also lots of battles which probably drove the people out.

So those are some really important historical sites if you’re interested in that side of the Greek islands. My next two suggestions are round two really famous and iconic islands. The first of which is Santorini.

greek isles cruise map

Santorini is absolutely fascinating because it is created by a lot of volcanic activity, and so you have these massive 300-meter-high cliffs and perched across the top of them are the towns.

When you actually call into Santorini you are likely to be docked outside the main town which is known as Fira and you can then either walk up or get a donkey ride up or you can wait for the cable car and when lots of cruise ships are in it can be very busy. But I really recommend you head to the other town which is called Oia.

Oia is a much more beautiful town. The very easy way of doing that is when you get onto the dockside, you’ll find a number of boats there which will do a shuttle service. So, they will take you from the dockside in Fira about a 15-minute drive to Oia, they’ll have a bus which takes you up the hill into Oia.

This is where you’re going to get those famous and classical scenes of Santorini. If you want the classic pictures of Santorini, this is the place to go.

From there they normally include a bus which will take you back to the town of Fira, which you can then explore, get the cable car down or walk down or get a donkey ride down. We actually walked down. It’s about 800 something steps and it’s not a bad walk down.

greek isles cruise map

The second really famous and iconic island is that of Mykonos and Mykonos Town. One of the great things to do in Mykonos town is to stroll through the little winding streets. There’s lots of complex little winding streets and it’s full of little boutiques and shops and restaurants and bars and it really is quite magnificent.

Many people walk through the old town to head towards the windmills, which are the famous and iconic sight and picture that everyone wants to get.

Mykonos is really fascinating. In the 70s and 80s it was a really important and vibrant place and attracted lots of celebrities. It reportedly caught on because Onassis took Jackie there and they really loved it there and it also then became a big centre for gay culture and gay holidays. It sort of waned a little bit in the 90s and the early 2000s, but it’s really come back and it’s again a very vibrant and trendy place to go.

greek isles cruise map

Santorini and Mykonos are great places to go but can be very busy if there’s lots of cruise ships in. Now two slightly more unusual islands that I really loved, and I would recommend when you’re looking at a cruise, try and make sure that these are included. The first of which is Patmos.

Patmos is a quiet island and you normally tender in, and only the smaller ships come in and then you can head from Skala which is a town on the bottom and head up the hill to Hora. If you’re really energetic you can walk although I recommend it’s much better to get a taxi up there because it’s really steep.

You can then go to the Monastery of St. John. Inside there they have some original scrolls from the Bible, but it’s also really well known for the cave of St John further down the hill. Although a lot of people like to go there, many are disappointed when they go there. The cave is where John had the revelation and saw Jesus and he wrote the book of Revelations which is the last book in the New Testament. So, it’s a very popular place to come for pilgrimages.

It’s a very beautiful place and the town is very lovely. The island of Patmos is a great one to include.

greek isles cruise map

Another Greek island which is very fascinating is Gythion. Again, the smaller ships tend to cruise here. They normally will tender you in although sometimes one of the ships can dock. Gythion has a very beautiful town. They have lots of dockside and Harborside restaurants, fantastic bakeries and its really great place to hang out.

But the thing I recommend you do is head out to the Glyfada cave at Dira. It’s about a 40-minute drive, so you may want to book an excursion through your cruise line. These caves are absolutely fascinating. They were only discovered in 1949 and are vast underground caves. You go a little boat trip, which will take about half an hour, winding its way through the caves. It’s quite an enclosed space so if you’re claustrophobic not the best thing to do! It is absolutely fascinating.

greek isles cruise map

Another great place to go to is Corfu. Corfu is much more of a land-based tourist island, but it’s a great place to go. Get the hop-on hop-off bus and you can head out and explore the island particularly head away from the old town more towards the beach areas and some great places where you can go swimming. For example, we went swimming at the base of the old fortress with magnificent views. Really quite something.

If you are going on an Eastern Mediterranean cruise which either end or start in Venice, you will also call on other ports along the Adriatic coast. The two most famous of which are Kotor Montenegro and Dubrovnik in Croatia.

greek isles cruise map

Kotor is a magnificent and beautiful place to call on, so when you look at your itinerary, I really recommend you include one that has Kotor on. It’s a bit like cruising into the Norwegian Fjords with beautiful mountains on either side of a beautiful bay. You sail quite a long way inland and the old town of Kotor is very charming. It’s quite small. It’s a walled city and very easy to stroll around. Lots of interesting shops but one of the things I recommend you do, if you’ve got a bit of energy and fitness, is to climb up the massive mountain behind Kotor.

It’s over a thousand steps so it you need to be relatively fit to head up there, but the views are absolute magnificent looking back across the bay.

greek isles cruise map

Dubrovnik is of course a very famous city and, in some ways, it’s becoming almost over busy with tourists. Fans of Game of Thrones will know Dubrovnik from early parts of the series Dubrovnik was used for some of Game of Thrones. The old walled city is very beautiful, and you can walk right along the old walls. Really magnificent.

You can head up on the cable car and get great views of Dubrovnik. Spend time around the Old City and go on a walking tour and find out about all the different churches and the stories of Dubrovnik. Absolutely fascinating.

greek isles cruise map

Of course, if you’re starting or ending in Venice (although the ports now used are 2 hours away) make sure that you do spend time in Venice, and have whole videos dedicated to finding out things about Venice.

If you’re heading on an Eastern Mediterranean cruise or a cruise that includes the Greek islands these are the things and places that I strongly recommend you consider when you look at an itinerary. Make sure that all of or many of these places are included.

A lot of the cruises will only call on the really big islands, so Mykonos and Santorini, and they will miss out some of the other islands which are much more fascinating, and you won’t get the true Greek experience.

Whatever you do and wherever you go, enjoy your Greek Island holiday to the fullest.

The Island Voyager

A Map Of The Greek Islands

You are currently viewing A Map Of The Greek Islands

Greece’s thousands of islands are spread over the eastern Mediterranean Sea. They are grouped into six main island groups; the Cyclades, the Ionian Islands, the Sporades, the Dodecanese, the Saronic Islands, and the North Aegean Islands. Evia and Crete are typically left out of the grouping and sit on their own due to their size. The entire map of the Greek Islands can be split out to show the detailed maps of the individual island groups, which you will see below.

The over-200 inhabited Greek islands are grouped geographically. Not surprisingly, each of the island groups have their own distinguishing features. From the lush green landscapes of the Ionian islands, to the minimalist whitewashed architecture of the Cyclades and the strong medieval influences of the Dodecanese.

The Cyclades

The Cyclades are what you might consider unmistakably characteristic and picturesque. The most well known Greek island group, comprising the wildly popular islands of Mykonos, Santorini and Paros.

The Cyclades are easily accessible via direct flights from the UK and Europe. Connecting flights via Athens are also popular, with the Cyclades having a number of islands with domestic airports .

Due to their location in the heart of the Aegean Sea, the islands are easily reached by ferry from Athens. Particularly convenient for those choosing to explore Greece’s capital as part of their vacation. And because they’re tightly packed together, the Cyclades are always popular among tourists venturing on island hopping holidays.

Apart from the famous Mykonos and Santorini , the Cyclades comprise a number of great alternatives that are well worth visiting. These include;

  • Naxos – the biggest island of the Cyclades
  • Milos – with it’s picturesque villages and unique coastline
  • Ios – a small yet lively and youthful island
  • Sifnos – an understated foodie’s paradise

The map below shows some of the more popular islands. Take a look at this list of all the Greek islands in the Cyclades for a complete view by size and population.

Map of the Cyclades Island Group

Map of Cyclades Islands

The Ionian Islands

Separated from all the other island groups, located on the Western side of Greece, are the Ionian islands. Cut off from Ottoman rule, these islands are the sole occupants of the Ionian Sea. As such they have a distinct Venetian influence and strong connection with Italy.

As well as having their own identity and architecture, the Ionian islands are also known for their lush green landscapes. Many of the most well known beaches and coastlines are found here. The ship-wrecked Navaggio and Myrtos beach in Kefalonia are good examples. All made more distinct from the subtle shades of turquoise in the seawater. Unique when compared to the deep blue hues of the Aegean. These characteristics make the Ionian islands a real hotspot for some of the best resorts in Greece.

There are 7 main islands which make up this group, including the ever popular Corfu and Zakynthos. These large islands have been long time favourites for British and European holidaymakers. Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia, have international airports and welcome visitors from all over during the busy summer periods. Increasingly popular nowadays, but still relatively quiet compared to others, is the island of Lefkada . With it’s white cliff backed beaches, mountainous interior and plush towns, it’s rightly becoming more visible on the map.

Map of the Greek Islands – Ionian Islands

Map of Ionian Islands

The Dodecanese

Named and literally translated to “12 islands”, but actually made up of much, much more. The main islands, of which there are 15, include the large and well liked Rhodes and Kos. Both of which have international airports. They are accompanied by some 150 smaller islands, some with domestic airports but most reachable only by the plethora of ferries sailing between them.

The Dodecanese island group straddles the south of the Aegean hugging the coastline of Turkey’s Antalya region. It’s location means that it is generally one of the hottest island groups, with islands such as Rhodes, enjoying long summers and warmer sea waters into fall. Also due to its geography, the archipelago spent hundreds of years under Byzantine and Ottoman rule and thus is reflected in its many landmarks. As such, Byzantine churches and impressive medieval fortresses are found around the islands today. Some ruined and some immaculately preserved and still functioning citadels.

Away from the busy holiday resorts found in Rhodes and Kos, the islands of Astypalea, Karpathos, Kalymnos and Symi are all getting increasingly popular with travellers visiting Greece. It’s a similar story for the smaller islands too, albeit generally for more quiet and secluded stays or day-trips.

Map of the Dodecanese Islands

Map of Dodecanese islands

The Sporades

Onto the Sporades. Of which, the most famous island from this group is Skopelos where the movie Mamma Mia was filmed. However, the most popular is undoubtedly Skiathos. An island buzzing with excitement, popular with young people from Greece as well as families from overseas.

The Sporades are located off the East Coast of mainland Greece. The majority of people choose to fly directly into Skiathos from countries across Europe. The only other island with an airport is Skyros, which operates domestic flights to and from Athens. The Sporades location above the large island of Evia, which sits on its own, means ferries from Athens do not sail here. Instead, the port of Volos has frequent ferries charting routes to and in between each of its main islands.

Map of the Greek Islands – Sporades Islands

Map of Sporades islands

The North Aegean Islands

As the name suggests, this island group is located in the North of the Aegean Sea, above the Dodecanese and east of the Sporades. Many of its islands hang just off the coast of Turkey. The island group starts out from Thassos in the north, a short ferry hop from Kavala, through to Lesvos. And finally down to Ikaria and Samos, south of the chain.

The North Aegean islands are nowhere near as well known or popular among international travellers. In the main, tourism is not as developed on the North Aegean islands. This is hardly a bad thing at all. The atmosphere and environment is relaxing and the beaches no less enticing, with much fewer crowds even in the peak of summer.

The islands of Lesvos and Samos draw in the most visitors with domestic airports and flights from Athens and Thessaloniki. Ikaria and Limnos are both great options to get away from the mainland and experience truly traditional Greek island life.

Map of the North Aegean Islands

The Saronic Islands

This cluster of islands, named after the Saronic gulf within which they are located, are very popular vacation spots amongst the Greeks. Particularly convenient, within a short ferry ride from Athens’ Piraeus port and various towns along the Peloponesse coast. Many Greeks have holiday homes on these islands and frequently visit for short breaks and weekends.

The main islands include;

  • Aegina – an important island of ancient Greece
  • Hydra – car-free and unspoiled
  • Poros – with its lush greenery, and
  • Spetses – the place to be seen

All differ in their character, yet all are popular with various crowds. From creative types, the rich and famous and families alike. The seafront promenades and main Chora’s are lively on the weekends and particularly throughout the summer months.

The proximity to Athens makes this island group a solid alternative to the Cyclades for those visiting the main highlights of Greece. Particularly suitable for those wanting to partake in some island hopping away from the large crowds.

Map of the Greek Islands – Saronic Island Group

Map of Saronic islands

The largest island in all of Greece is Crete, with its elongated shape stretching East to West. The island demarcates the end of the Aegean Sea and the start of the Libyan Sea.

Hugely popular with the package holiday-makers as well as those seeking to explore a little more independently. The island, being one of Greece’s largest municipalities and one of it’s most popular tourist destinations, has three airports. Of which two are international and served by various cities throughout Europe.

Crete has World famous beaches dotted around the island and remains of the earliest advanced civilisations in Europe. Not to be overlooked, the Cretan cuisine is recognised to be some of the best in Greece.

Excursions included

The Greek Islands, from the Peloponnese to the Cyclades via the Dodecanese, are enchanting, bewitching and captivating. From the sheer coastlines bordered by paradisiacal turquoise waters to the archaeological sites that are as emblematic as they are monumental, let yourself fall under the spell of these jewels of the Aegean Sea. From Athens , set sail aboard L’Austral   for an 8-day cruise in the heart of the most beautiful Greek islands.

Throughout your journey, you will benefit from an excursion included per person per port of call, to choose from a selection offered by PONANT. During this cruise, admire the ancestral history of Hydra through its famous monuments and museums, discover the monastery of Saint John and the Cave of the Apocalypse where the last book of the New Testament was revealed to John the Apostle, from Patmos , or admire the sumptuous archaeological sites, from the Temples of Zeus, Apollo and Athena to the Terrace of the Lions, from Delos. The diversity of experiences on offer promises you intense and varied moments (to discover the full range of excursions, go to the itinerary tab).

The diversity of experiences on offer promises you intense and varied moments (to discover the full range of excursions, go to the itinerary tab).

In the Dodecanese archipelago, the island of Patmos , known as “the Jerusalem of the Aegean Sea”, reveals itself to offer you a moment suspended between unique landscapes of white-sand beaches and rocky bays.

Planted with forests of cypress trees and olive groves, Symi is bewitching. The shimmering colours of its dwellings and surrounding nature make it a real paradise for those seeking tranquillity and serenity.

You will now head towards the most easterly part of the Cyclades. Amorgos,  or the island in the Big Blue film, as it is nicknamed, is a rough gem. Fall under the spell of its volcanic and mountainous landscapes diving into the bordering crystal-clear waters and its paved small streets edged by traditional whitewashed houses.

After an unforgettable cruise in Santorini’s captivating caldera, where high cliffs surround the majestic ancient crater engulfed by water in the 2nd millennium BC, you will set sail north west. On Milos , the limestone cliffs and small hidden coves are yours to discover in a soothing atmosphere.

The birthplace of Artemis and Apollo,  Delos  is rich in archaeological ruins, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, illustrating its prestigious history. A journey back in time almost 2,000 years, between millennia-old heritage and sumptuous panoramas.

L’Austral will then head towards Paros . Nestling in the heart of the Cyclades archipelago, this island reputed for its sublime white marble offers a real concentration of Greek beauty, from whitewashed houses to olive groves to ancient monuments.

You will now sail towards the east of the Peloponnese, to reach your final port of call. Here, a gem named Hydra reveals its old-world charm in a stunning setting. With its hidden coves and its mountains topped with monasteries, this jewel of the Saronic Islands completely devoid of cars offers a total change of scenery against the spellbinding blue of the Aegean Sea.

Athens , the mythical city dominated by the Acropolis and its monuments, which form the most extraordinary architectural and artistic ensemble bequeathed to the world by Ancient Greece, will mark the end of this exceptional odyssey.

Saint John Monastery & Apocalypse Cave

Saint John Monastery & Apocalypse Cave

From the pier, board your coach for a drive to the Saint John Monastery . Overlooking Skala port and the island’s southern region, this medieval monastery looks more like a fortress than a house of prayer. It was built to repel attacks by pirates.

In the year 95 AD, Saint John the Evangelist was banished from Ephesus and exiled to Patmos , which in the days of the Roman Empire was where those who were exiled were sent.

In 1088, the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenos authorised Saint Christodoulos, an abbot from Asia Minor, to erect a monastery in memory of Saint John. The whole island was yielded to the monastery. The adjoining Theotokos Chapel has frescoes dating back to the 12th century. Other Byzantine treasures are found in the monastery. Today this holy place is a veritable museum of Byzantine art thanks to the countless frescoes, icons, holy objects and manuscripts contained within its walls.

After visiting the monastery, a short drive away, will take you to the Apocalypse Cave where the final chapter of the New Testament was revealed to John the Apostle. The Book of Revelation prophecy came to him through a symbolic vision and was written in Greek. This cave was the house of the evangelist and now is surrounded by a monastery and school of theology. You can see the resting place outlined in beaten silver where St John laid his head every night. To the right the rock is shaped like a pulpit and is where the disciple, Prochoros, wrote the revelation as dictated by John.

Finally, you will re-board your coach for a photo stop at the three windmills located at the top of Chora hill. You will then return returning to the pier.

  • This excursion is not suitable for people who have difficulty walking. The coach will drop you near the old town, and access to the monastery is on foot via cobblestone streets. All together you will have to go up and down about 100 steps. Appropriate clothing is required to enter religious sites: shoulders and knees must be covered. It is not permitted to take photos inside the chapel or the cave.

Walking around Symi, the pearl of the Dodecanese

No-2127_CR21_LY240723_Istanbul-Istanbul_©StudioPONANT_AlexandreHerbrecht-2.jpg

This incredibly charming mountainous island reveals its history through its streets and colourful houses. Stroll the quays of the lower town of Symi before you take to the heights to overlook the bay.

With its amphitheatre harbour on the side of the mountain, Symi and its colourful neoclassical-style houses are one of the most beautiful sites in the Dodecanese Islands . Considered the birthplace of the Charites (Three Graces) in Greek mythology, Symi played a significant role in the Roman and Byzantine Empires. Occupied by the Knights Hospitaller in 1373, it was at its height under the Ottoman Empire, when shipbuilding and trading brought the island relative prosperity.

Fall under the charm of the Gialos port district whose quaysides are lined with picturesque houses with multi-coloured facades. If you wish, at the end of the guided tour, you can go the upper town by car or climb the 500 steps of the main street, called the Kali Strata , which offers stunning views over the coast and the turquoise waters.

  • We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes.

The unspoiled beauty of Amorgos

The unspoiled beauty of Amorgos

Amorgos is an unspoiled island and the Eastern-most of the Cycladic Islands, chosen by filmmaker Luc Besson for the scene of "The Big Blue".

From the pier, you will board your coach and start your visit by the island’s trademark, the Byzantine Monastery of Hozoviotissa. Dedicated to Saint of the island, which is wedged into a huge precipice at 900 ft from the sea, the Monastery was founded by the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Komninus in 1088 and contains rare icons and manuscripts.

Continuing your tour, you will reach Chora with its castle, one of the most picturesque villages in Cyclades. Along the streets lined with whitewashed houses, Byzantine or pre-Christian churches alternate with windmills. After tasting local homemade sweets served with ouzo and raki, you may stroll around the paved little streets and discover the typical architecture of Cyclades or you may relax under the shade of the huge eucalyptus tree located in the middle of "Plateia Lozza" main square.

You will then return to Katapola port to embark your ship.

  • Coaches are very limited on the island and are not recent models. This tour involves approximately 2 hours of walking. In order to visit the inside of the monastery, guests will have to negotiate the 269 steps up and back down. Guests who do not wish to walk up the monastery can enjoy a panoramic view from the parking lot where there are benches but no shade. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes. Appropriate dress is required to visit the monastery. Men must wear long pants. Ladies must have their shoulders covered and wear a long skirt.

Typical Milos & its Venus

Typical Milos & its Venus

From the pier, you will board your coach for a 20-minute drive to Sarakiniko , an inlet of pure white rock formations sculpted by volcanic eruptions.

The beautiful, other-worldly spot is one of the island’s many geological wonders and perhaps one of the most photographed places in the Cyclades. You will enjoy a walk down the inlet to experience this one-of-a-kind beach and take photos. Here, you will feel as if you have landed on the moon.

Your next stop will be at the outskirts of Trypiti . You will stroll towards the marble Roman Amphitheatre, recently restored. You will discover its seven entire seat rows offering a unique view of the bay. Not far from this location, you will have the opportunity to see the site of the discovery of Venus de Milo in 1820 (now residing in the Louvre Museum in Paris).

From there, you will travel the road along the northern coast towards Plaka and its cobbled streets and alleys. Plaka is a classic Cycladic “Chora” with white stone houses and bougainvilleas, situated at 250 m, above sea level. You will walk through the village to admire its traditional architecture and its stunning view of the sea from the veranda of Panagia Korfiatissa, a beautiful 19th-century church.

After enjoying some free time, you will get back to your coach and your ship, 10-minute drive.

  • This tour involves approximately 1h45 of walking on cobblestones streets and uneven path with some steps. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. All the visits are outside visits.

The archaeological site of Delos

The archaeological site of Delos

Your tour will start directly from the pier where you will have disembarked by ship's tender. Follow your guide and go discover one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Greece.

Both the oldest and the largest open-air site in Europe, this antique site has many houses, temples and sacred shrines. Emerging from a burned grass carpet, the ruins are spread out below Mount Kynthos. At the top of this small hill and only relief of the island, the Sanctuary of Zeus and Athena Cynthiens dating from the 3rd century BC. Overlooking the area, as on the hillside, you can see a range of cultural institutions dedicated to oriental divinities. Frozen by 2,000 years of abandonment, the city ruins draw an impressive maze of white stone in which one can get lost like the pilgrims and the merchants of yesteryear, when Delos was beaming on the Aegean.

You will reach the sanctuary of Apollo , known as the “Temple of the Athenians”, where you will admire the temples dedicated to this god, their altars, their votive offerings and other buildings.

Then, you will discover the Terrace of the Lions , with its famous marble lions that dominated and protected the town. You will continue until the Theatre District, the most luxurious district of the ancient city with the mansions known as the home “of Dionysus”, “of Cleopatra” and “of Dioscuri”. You will see the different mosaics that adorned the floors of Hellenistic houses, and the streets, the houses, the workshops and the shops that made Delos a bustling city.

  • This excursion is entirely on foot. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. The museum is closed for revonation.

Panorama & winery

Panorama & winery

Your tour starts off with a panoramic drive to the traditional village of Lefkes , a beautiful hilltop village built in an amphitheatre shape, offering wonderful vistas all around. The town hall is especially nice, being built with the famous marble of Paros.

After a short visit, continue towards the traditional Moraitis Winery , see the vineyards, visit the production areas and the old winery basement, where the famous red wines of Moraitis are still aged. Your visit of the property will end with a wine tasting accompanied by local snacks.

You will then continue to the nearby village of Naoussa , considered to be one of the prettiest in the Cyclades. Despite the development of tourism, the village has managed to keep its authenticity, its character and its charm, with its whitewashed and flowered little houses and its tiny whitewashed churches and chapels, surrounded by labyrinth-like narrow, stone-paved streets.

Your last stop will be in Parikia town , where you will visit the famous Church of a Hundred Doors. This church is the holy place of Paros and is linked to the history and myths of Byzantium.

  • This tour involves approximately two hours of walking over flat but uneven terrain and a few steps. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun.

Parikia & Naoussa

Parikia & Naoussa

From the pier, board your coach for a 10-minute drive to the famous Byzantine Church of Ekatontapyliani . Also named the “Lady of the hundred doors”, this church is one of the greatest early Christian monuments in Greece. The name was a creation of the 17th century scholars who wanted to compare the splendour of the church to that of the Temple of Hundred Doors (Ekatonpylon) in ancient Thebes of Egypt.

Following your visit, you will board your coach for a panoramic drive to the traditional village of Lefkes.

Lefkes is the most mountainous village of Paros and the most verdurous one. It was the first capital of Paros. The village is located under a pineforest on the hill. Follow your guide on a walking tour through its narrow streets with white walls. See the old wash-houses that are still used by some housewives, the House of Literature, the picturesque Ramnos, a street with taverns and other stores and the wonderful view: the sea and Naxos in the background. The houses are built amphitheatrical. The first residents were immigrants that came from Crete and Naoussa and locals who chose to build their village on the mountain, in order to be protected from the pirates. The town hall was built with the famous marble of Paros.

Once leaving Lefkes, you will head for the picturesque village of Naoussa . The port of Naoussa is protected by a separate fortification, the Venetian Castle. The fortification was built in the 15th century by the dynasty of Sommaripas and emerges from the sea behind the small harbour with the traditional fish boats. Today, although half sunk, the castle offers a very impressive sight worth seeing.

Before rejoining your ship, you will have some free time to stroll around its narrow streets, little squares and traditional whitewashed houses.

  • This tour involves approximately 2 hours of moderate walking mainly on flat ground, a few steps are to be expected at the Church of Ekatontapyliani. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes and protect yourself from the sun. Appropriate clothing is required to enter religious sites: shoulders and knees must be covered.

History of Hydra

History of Hydra

The charm of Hydra town certainly lies in her rich history, port and waterfront unspoiled by motorised vehicles. This island offers a rugged charm and many scenes to discover.

From the pier, follow your guide on a walking exploration through the island's historical landmarks. Your first stop will be the Hydra Museum - Historical Archives where you may admire 19th century paintings of considerable artistic value as well as rich documental and photographic material detailing the long maritime tradition and history of the island.

Continuing your walk around the port, you will visit the Church of the Dormitian , which houses icons, chandeliers and other offerings from the wealthy seafarers of the island. It is even said one of the chandeliers was stolen from Louis XIV and given to the church.

Enjoy a coffee break or a refreshment together with Hydra's local sweet "amygdaloto" .

Next, reach Koundouriotis Mansion , one of the finest examples of the traditional 18th and 19th century architecture of Hydra. Built in 1780 by the ship owner Lazaros Koundouriotis, it now houses various items from the National Historical Museum of Athens, such as traditional costumes, jewellery, fine embroideries, pottery and wood-carvings.

Enjoy a leisurely walk through Hydra's little alleys and stone houses before your return to the port.

  • This tour is entirely on foot, walking over uneven ground, cobble stone streets and steps (70-80 steps). You must be in relatively good physical condition to participate. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. Appropriate clothing is required to enter religious sites: shoulders and knees must be covered. The refreshment is included on your tour.

Innovative design, sleek shape and profile , refined interior decoration, friendly, intimate atmosphere: French designers and decorators have managed to give this ship a unique style and veritable signature of its own. Combinations of fine materials, colours and tones harmoniously livened up with touches of bright colour, elegant lines , discreet and subtle refinement… everything has been designed to create a unique atmosphere onboard, a veritable personality: the chic style and naturally relaxing ambiance of a veritable private yacht.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  The first stop after checking-out of your hotel is a small and cozy former home-estate once owned by one of Russia’s literary greats, Leo Tolstoy. Explore Moscow’s Metro, famed for its architectural splendour.

Meanwhile, the luxurious MS Volga Dream awaits and your voyage along Russia’s extensive waterways is about to begin. The Captain's welcome reception and dinner mark the start of our unforgettable cruise.

Explore the impressive Church of St. Dmitri-on-the blood, erected on the site where Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible, was murdered in 1591, and attend an enchanting concert of choral music at St. John’s Church. After the tour, you return to your ship and watch the documentary film "Construction of the Moscow Canal"

Day 6 Yaroslavl

Today you’ll visit one of the oldest cities in Russia and the Volga’s first port - Yaroslavl. On a guided tour you’ll visit the Spassky Monastery with the icon Transfiguration of the Savior. One of the most well-known Russian symbols, Kizhi Island on the waters of Lake Onega, which included in the UNESCO heritage list will amaze you! Explore a collection of ancient Russian wooden houses and windmills, and the famous Transfiguration church, built in 1714 without a single nail. In the afternoon, we travel to Pushkin town, where Catherine the Great’s Palace is located. It houses the extraordinary Amber Room, its six tons of solid amber deftly carved and framed in gold leaf. Platinum/Imperial Program:  Enjoy a full sightseeing day with a visit to the Fabergé Museum, founded by entrepreneur, Viktor Vekselberg. The museum was opened in December 2013 to display a glittering collection of Faberge eggs and objects d’art created by Peter Carl Fabergé and his staff. After lunch, we travel to the Tsar’s Village to visit the famous Catherine’s Palace and the exquisitely recreated Amber Room. A stroll through the formal gardens is highly recommended.
