When you hear about Annecy , the first thing that comes to your mind is this postcard image: the lake’s translucent water reflecting the mountains surrounding it. It’s really the #1 tourist attraction in town.

For sure, Lake Annecy (Lac d’Annecy in French) is the first thing you will want to see when you arrive, so let’s start your trip in Annecy by a small walk on the lake’s shore. You will finally be able to see the crystal clear, lagoon like water and the beauty of the place by yourself!

You can for example start your stroll starting from Paquier , the huge lawn boarding the lake, and go on the right to the Jardins de l’Europe (Gardens of Europe).

With this itinerary, you will go through one of the top places in Annecy, the Pont des Amours (lover’s bridge), with, like the one in Paris, has “love locks” tied to it.

The jardins de l’Europe are very nice for the lake view of course, but also for the huge and magnificent multi centennial trees you can find there.

On the other side of Paquier (left side), you can go to the Imperial Palace gardens, for sure the most luxurious hotel in Annecy .

It’s located at the border of Annecy’s adjacent town, Annecy le Vieux, which, despite it’s name, is not and shouldn’t be confused with the old town of Annecy.

You can keep going on the lake shore to find a beach as well as the starting point for many nautical activities to do on the lake. I will tell you everything about them a bit later in the article.

Lake Annecy

A cool way to discover the place is to choose a Segway stroll, a nice activity to do on Lake Annecy shore . Even if you have never tried before, it’s a great place to start as the area around the lake is a pedestrian only area.

Trips are offered from 30 minutes (around 17€ per person) to 2 hours (around 55€ per person). It can be a great activity to do with your family!

I strongly recommend you to book your Segway tour in advance. It’s more convenient, as you can do it directly online by clicking here.

You’re going to Annecy?

You probably know it: the hardest part of planning your trip is to find an hotel offering a good value for money!

The closer you get to your travel dates, the harder it will be to get a good deal. Lots of people will be visiting Annecy on the same dates as you , so you can be sure that the best deals are booked extremely quickly!

Hopefully, there is a pretty simple solution to this problem: do like me and book your hotel as early as possible!

So, my best advice is to take 5 minutes (now) to have a look at the list of travelers’ favorite hotels in Annecy.

And if you see a good offer, book it!

Most hotels offer free cancellation, so it’s quick, easy, and you will avoid the the inconvenience of finding nothing but mediocre rooms at exorbitant prices.

Once you’ve booked your hotel, it will be time to continue reading this guide and find out more about the best things to do in Annecy!

Visit Annecy - Lake Annecy

The sportier will for sure enjoy to do a bike ride around Lake Annecy.

There is around 42km of bike path, it’s really a great way to discover the surroundings. You will of course need to stop a few times to admire the view! it’s also the best way to find some places without too much people, especially in summer.

You want to rent a bike in Annecy?

It’s very simple, just click on the button below! Bike rental starts from 18€ a day only, so it would be a shame not to take advantage of it:

Bike Annecy

For those with an adventurous spirit and big thrills enthusiasts , I strongly recommand you to book a paragliding session above Lake Annecy .

The view is just crazy, no wonder why Annecy is the most famous paragliding site in Europe , and one of the best in the world!

Many companies are providing this service, starting from 95€ for 15/20 minutes . You can even chose if you want a big thrill acrobatic flight or something calmer.

The paragliding session usually starts from Forclaz pass (col de Forclaz in french) or the small town of Talloires and it should be booked in advance. Doing paragliding in Annecy is the best way to discover this sport!

For me, it’s a really a “must do” tourist attraction in Annecy.

The best paragliding session in Annecy can easily be booked online by clicking the button below.

As it’s the most popular activity to do in Annecy , you need to book it as soon as possible , else there are good chances that it will be fully booked.

Doing paragliding in Annecy

To discover Lake Annecy and its surroundings from another angle, you should go on the lake itself!

To do so, you have several options.

For example, you can rent a pedal boat (about 12€ per half hour) or a motor boat without license (starting from 30€ per half hour). Don’t forget to book it in advance, as Annecy is very touristy during summer.

If you want to discover Lake Anny by boat while eating a good lunch or diner , you can also take the restaurant boat “Libellule” from Annecy.

There are 2 departures per day , one at 12h and the other at 20h. The round trip takes around 2h30. For 65€, you will have the mini cruise and a 3 courses menu (starter, main course, dessert).

The Annecy boat company also offers commented cruises lasting from 1 to 2 hours. You can find more information on the official website (in French).

If you want to enjoy Lake Annecy on a boat far from the other tourists , you should opt for a private boat trip!

You will rent a boat with a skipper that will take care of showing you the best spots of the lake.

The great thing is that you can choose the type of boat you prefer and then simply relax and enjoy a perfect day!

As you can imagine, this type of VIP day on Lake Annecy is extremely popular, so you should rent your boat with skipper as soon as possible . It would be a shame to miss this day because all boats are already rented!

You can find all boats with skipper in Annecy by clicking on the button bellow:

And if you have a boat license, you can simply rent a boat by clicking here to enjoy the lake for the whole day and go where you want!

If you are looking for what to do in Annecy , enjoying the numerous nautical activities can be a good choice!

My favorite adrenaline pumping activities on the lake are for sure water-skiing, wakeboarding and wake surfing.

Even if you’re a beginner, no problem, they will teach you the basics and make sure you enjoy your session!

To book, simply click on the button below:

And if you’re looking for something more relaxing, renting a stand up paddle is my favorite way to explore a part of Lake Annecy. It really feels great to paddle on this beautiful lake surrounded by mountains.

You need to click here to book your board.

Of course just go swim or get a tan in one of Lake Annecy beaches!

water skiing Annecy

In addition to the lake, the city of Annecy is also famous for it’s beautiful old town and the main canal going through it. That’s why the town is also known as the Venice of the Alps (la Venise des Alpes in french). It’s really one of the highlights of the city.

With it’s cobbled streets and arches, the Annecy old town is for sure a must-see!

It’s the place where you can take the famous picture with “l’écluse fleurie ” (the flower tidegate on the Thiou canal) or the palais de l’Isle (Isle palace), located between 2 canals.

Don’t hesitate to wander in the small alleys and to follow the canal along the Louis-Lachenal promenade .

With many areas in the shade, it’s a very nice small walk to do in summer when it’s very warm!

It’s also in Annecy old town that you can find most of the city’s restaurants (touristy, but some of them are very good), as well as all the small souvenirs shop where you can buy local things as well as the superb (a bit of irony maybe!) placemat with the picture of the lake.

You will also find some typical french shops with amazing Haute-Savoie cold cuts and cheese.

About awesome local food , if you are lucky enough to be in Annecy on tuesday, friday or sunday morning, you should definitely go to the old town market.

It takes place next to the canal, and don’t hesitate to bargain a bit on local products : Maybe you will get a free dry sausage if you buy a few!

Annecy old town

Taking a stroll in Annecy old town streets is nice, but doing so while eating the best ice cream in town is even better! Yep, there is an excellent ice cream shop in Annecy: Le glacier des Alpes .

It’s even considered to be one of the best in France. They offer more than 45 flavours, so the hardest part is to chose and stay reasonable!

Annecy is also the perfect place to eat a good tartiflette , croziflette (quite similar to tartiflette, but made with crozets, pasta from Savoie), cheese fondue , diots de Savoie (sausages) or, of course, fishes from the lake like perch, trout or arctic char.

You like wine and cheese?

In that case, you should really participate to this tasting workshop led by a sommelier and a Master Cheesemaker of France , no less!

During the workshop, you will taste 5 wines accompanied each time by a different cheese (Tomme, Beaufort and Reblochon among others!).

You need to book this activity in Annecy by clicking here.

glacier des alpes Annecy

Another thing to see in Annecy is the Castle museum. It’s located at the top of the small hill and you can easily walk there from the old town.

For adults, the entrance price is 5.5€. At this price, you will be able to visit the château d’Annecy as well as the temporary exhibitions. It takes around 1h to visit, but let’s be frank: the view from the castle is the main interest!

Annecy Castle

If you’re lucky enough to be in Annecy during summer, you will for sure want to take a dip in the beautiful crystal clear waters of the lake!

Here are the best beaches in Annecy and around the lake:

  • The beach of the Imperial , on the Avenue d’Albigny. Paid beach.
  • Marquisats beach , on the west bank of the lake. Free of charge.
  • Albigny beach , the largest beach on Lake Annecy. Free access, in Annecy-le-Vieux.
  • The 2 beaches of Sevrier
  • Saint-Jorioz beach , featuring a diving board, pontoons and toilets/showers + first-aid post. Paid beach in summer.
  • Angon beach , a well-shaded beach crossed by a stream. Private beach.
  • Talloires beach where there is a paddling pool, ideal for small children. Paid beach.
  • Menthon Saint-Bernard beach with playground, volleyball and petanque courts. Paid beach.

In addition to paragliding (which needs to be booked here! ), you can also do :

  • Hang gliding, to feel even more like flying like a bird! From 95€ for a discovery flight.
  • A glider flight , from 180€. The departure is from Albertville, 45 minutes from Annecy. Flying over the mountains in total silence is truly an unforgettable experience!
  • Canyoning: you can choose between several formulas and different canyons on O’Speed Canyoning website. They are open all year round and also offer Ice Canyoning sessions in winter!
  • A Via Ferrata trail , to explore the cliffs and mountains!
  • An introduction to rock climbing
  • A downhill mountain bike session, at Semnoz for an adrenaline rush!
  • A hot-air balloon flight above Lake Annecy to enjoy a magnificent view
  • A flight in a two-seater helicopter to live a unique experience
  • A ride on an electric skateboard on the shores of Lake Annecy
  • Tree climbing, a great activity to enjoy with your family during your stay in Annecy!

And if you wonder what to do in Annecy in winter , you can maybe try snowshoeing . These 4 to 7 hours hikes are a great way to discover the snowy landscapes around Annecy! You can enjoy snowshoeing from December to March.

You can find more information about this activity by clicking here.

As I was telling you earlier, Annecy’s nickname is “the Venice of the Alps”, because of the canals you can see in the old town.

But Annecy borrowed something else from the famous Italian city: it’s famous carnival!

Every year, generally at the beginning of march , hundreds of people dressed with magnificent costumes parade in the street. Several activities related to make-up or masks creations can be done in Annecy during the Venetian Carnival.

A very beautiful tourist attraction!

Venetian Carnival Annecy

The international Animated Film Festival takes place every year in June in Annecy .

Professionals of the industry from all other the world are showcasing their movies, ranging from 3D animated graphics to traditional animations and some very original creation (stop motion clay based animation, Chinese shadows theatre etc…).

A great thing about this festival is that every evening, a movie  projection is organised on the Paquier lawn , and everyone can enjoy it!

If you are lucky enough to be doing your trip to Annecy at this period, it’s really perfect for an evening with the kids (or without !)

Annecy International Animated Film Festival

Another must-see for locals and tourists is the Annecy Lake Festival . This amazing pyrotechnic show takes place every year on the first Saturday of August and is the biggest in Europe .

Fireworks are shot off from Lake Annecy and stands are built everywhere around Paquier so everyone can enjoy it. There are around 46 000 paid seats, but of course, you can view it from anywhere!

Anyway, a good advice et to hunt for a good viewing spot quite early , as the show attracts more than 100 000 spectators every year. You can imagine that the best spots are taken quite fast!

For more info and seat booking, you can have a look a Annecy official website (in french) .

Annecy lake Festival

After visiting Annecy, you will probably want to discover the surroundings. Here are the 5 best things to do around Annecy:

15. Going for a hike around Annecy

Considering Annecy is located at the heart of the French Alps , one of the top thing to do is to go for a hike in the mountains surrounding the city. Here are a few of my favorites:

it’s the easiest hike around Annecy . Take your car, and go to the top of the Semnoz, there is lots of parking places. From there, you will have amazing viewpoints on the lake and moutains surrounding it.

In summer , you will be able to do a few hikes as well as mountain bike in the high mountain pastures, and in winter , you can enjoy sledge, ski and snowshoe.

If you want to get some thrills, I strongly advice you to book your downhill mountain bike session at Semnoz, it’s amazing! (No previous experience needed!)

This hike starts from the town of Annecy le Vieux and Veyrier. You can walk for a few hours without major difficulties and you will be protected from the heat in summer as most of the paths are in the forest.

The great part of this hike is that you will benefit from an amazing view on all Lake Annecy.

It’s also possible to go directly next to the top of Mount Verrier with a car , by the “col des contrebandiers”. You will then have to do a short walk to go to the lake viewpoints.

For a short walk with a nice view on the lake , I suggest you to follow the signs to the “Talabar” , a small meadow with one the best views of Annecy.

This hike around Annecy is for experienced hikers , as the last part is quite hard, with chains, cables, ladders and quite slippery rocks. From there, you will have a great view on the lake as well as the Mont Blanc.

Properly speaking, this is not a hike, but rather a short walk in a nice natural site at about 10km from Annecy.

Result of the water erosion on rocks, the 25m deep gorges du Fier can be visited thanks to the footbridges installed all along the torrent. At the end of the walk, don’t miss the “sea of rocks”.

The site is closed from October to March and is then open everyday. The ticket price is 5.70€ for adults and the visit takes around 1 hour.

Hike Annecy

Around the lake of Annecy, you can also visit some charming villages, among which:

  • Annecy-le-Vieux: not to be confused with the “Vieil Annecy”, which is the old town! There, you will find the beach of Albigny and the restaurant “Le clos des sens”, 3 stars in the Michelin Guide.
  • Veyrier du lac, 5 km from Annecy, located at the foot of Mont Veyrier, a popular place for its hiking trails offering superb views over Lake Annecy
  • Menthon Saint Bernard , which houses a magnificent 12th century castle that you can visit. You can find more information here
  • Talloires, located in a small bay of lake Annecy, is a very photogenic village that inspired Paul Cézanne for his painting “The blue lake”.
  • Duingt , a village known for its 2 castles
  • Saint Jorioz, where you will find the only sandy beach of lake Annecy.

The first place you can visit near Annecy is Geneva. This famous swiss city is located only 30 minutes away from Annecy , close to the French border.

Like the city of Annecy, it’s situated on the shores of a large lake : Lake Geneva .

Here are the best places to visit in Geneva:

  • The old town , featuring a few must-see tourist attractions, such as St Peter’s Cathedral of Geneva.
  • The Jet d’eau, symbol of the city
  • The Parc de la Grange and the Parc des Eaux-vives, on the edge of the lake
  • A stroll next to the lake or a cruise on Lake Geneva .

If you want to visit Geneva, you should read my detailed article: The 23 best things to do in Geneva .

Jet d'Eau Geneva

You prefer to discover the mountains around Annecy ?

No problem!

Let’s head to Chamonix and the Mont-Blanc , only 1h10 away. It’s in my opinion one of the best places to visit around Annecy!

First, you should take the Aiguille du Midi cable car to discover an exceptional view over the entire Mont-Blanc massif.

Then opt for a ride on a rack train to reach the largest French glacier: the “Mer de Glace” . There, you can visit the famous Ice Cave and its collection of ice sculptures.

And if you want to discover amazing winter sports, you should try one of these 2 activities:

  • An introduction to winter mountaineering in Chamonix
  • Climbing an Icefall : A winter sport you should try at least once in your life!

No matter what you plan to do, you should end the day with a good Savoyard dish at a restaurant in Chamonix. Tartiflette, croziflette, fondue, local cheese… You will have lots of things to try!

aiguille du Midi

Still on the shores of Lake Geneva, you should visit:

  • Yvoire, a pretty medieval village listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. You will be able to discover its castle and small local craft shops.
  • Evian-les-Bains, a small but world famous town known for its mineral water . The walk in the centre and along the lake is very pleasant.

Yvoire

If you have only 1 day to visit Annecy , you will have to make concessions! To make the most out of your day in the Venice of the Alps, I recommend you the following things to do :

  • For a good start, take a stroll on Lake Annecy shore
  • Then go to Annecy old town to see the canals and Annecy castle museum
  • For the lunch, you can eat something in the old town (the famous local “tartiflette” if it’s not too hot!) and finish with one of the amazing ice cream from the Glacier des Alpes
  • In the afternoon, you should try to do one of the nautical activities available on Lake Annecy like wakeboard , water ski, paddle boat or stand up paddle!
  • To end your day in style, go for a paragliding session and enjoy the amazing view of Annecy from the sky!

In 2 days in Annecy , you will have the time to go for one of the nice hikes you can do in the mountains around the city!

In addition to the 1st day program, I suggest you to go to the Semnoz and maybe do this hike (in French) that offers a superb view on the lake.

For the most adventurous among you, the La Tournette hike is a great alternative to have a memorable day!

If you choose a short hike, you can finish the day at the beach , next to Annecy le Vieux and enjoy the lake’s crystal clear water.

And if you want to do something fun at Semnoz, the downhill mountain biking session is really awesome! You need to book it here.

Y si quieres hacer algo divertido en Semnoz, la sesión de ciclismo de montaña es realmente impresionante. Tienes que reservarlo aquí.

if you have 3 days in Annecy , you will have the time to go around the lake and maybe spend one night in of the the small towns like Talloires or Menthon-Saint-Bernard.

Take the opportunity to do a few pictures of the castle of Menthon-Saint-Bernard. Depending on the day and season, you can even visit it (more info on their website )

Another very photogenic place is Duingt castle , on the other side of the lake.

And if you are visiting the region with friends, why not go for example do some tree climbing in an adventure park or paintball in the forest , near Annecy?

I f you would like to know more about special events in Annecy or just get a tourist map, you should go to the Annecy tourist information center.

Bonnie V

My husband and I spent a few nights in Annecy at the beginning of September of 2019. Besides the fairytale-like charm of the town and the wonderful pastries, my favorite memory is the outside dance by the lake with a live band. Someone told me they do it every Sunday evening in the summer. I’m thinking of going a little later in September, and I’m wondering if the dance continues into September. Do you know? Thank you.

Vincent

Hello Bonnie,

I can’t tell you if this type of show will be offered in September. It’s a bit too far away. Perhaps you can send a message to the Annecy tourist office. They might be able to tell you about the events to come this year.

Have a nice trip to Annecy!

Best time to visit, how to get there, getting around.

Winding canals have made Venice one of Italy’s most famous tourism darlings. However, many other destinations across Europe also have scenic waterways. You’ve likely heard of Giethoorn, affectionately known as the “ Venice of the Netherlands .” But what about Annecy? This atmospheric mountain town settled at the tip of Lake Annecy in southeastern France lures travelers with its charming old town that’s crossed by canals and bridges — hence its nickname the “Venice of the Alps” — plus heritage-rich landmarks like Château d’Annecy and Palais de I'Île, churches, museums, cafés, cozy bistros, and Michelin-rated restaurants taking alpine cuisine to new heights. It’s also well regarded for stunning scenery — a sparkling lake with sandy beaches, rivers, waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks — and the nature-oriented outdoor recreation that goes along with all that. Visitors have the choice of staying at boutique hotels, quaint guest houses, and campsites.

Whether you’re planning to stick around Annecy for a while or just stop by as part of a longer trip around the French Alps and maybe even the South of France (it’s less than four hours from Provence), it won’t take long to fall in love with this picture-perfect alpine escape.

Best Hotels & Resorts

Rivage hôtel & spa annecy.

Rivage Hôtel & Spa Annecy occupies a prime position on the lake near several notable attractions. Besides being a convenient home base for exploring, it very much reads like a contemporary retreat with rooms that echo the natural beauty of the area, a pampering spa, and a sophisticated restaurant.

Set in the heart of the old town a 10-minute walk from the lake, Hébé Hotel is a great place to unwind in between sightseeing, shopping, and eating without leaving the city center. The colors used throughout the interiors cue calm vibes while the clean lines, wood floors, and sleek furnishings create a cosmopolitan profile.

Le Pélican

So much of Le Pélican centers around the water. With a privileged perch on the banks of Lake Annecy, why wouldn’t that be the case? The property supplies the perfect vantage point to admire the placid blueness from the terraces. When you do decide to venture inside, comfy rooms and suites are equipped for restful ZZZs.

Hotel Catalpa

Hotel Catalpa is a smart mid-range option that’s steps from the lake and public beach and a short walk from the old town. Inside the stone façade are 52 rooms replete with all the requisite comforts and a dash of French flair. There’s also a restaurant, bar, and terrace.

Best Things to Do

Lake annecy.

One of the largest and most pristine lakes in France, Lake Annecy is fed by pure mountain springs that trickle down from snow-capped peaks. It offers sandy beaches for sunbathing in the warmer months. Watersports are a huge draw for aquatic enthusiasts who have the option of paddleboarding, wakeboarding, scuba diving, and catamaran rentals.

Vieille Ville

Compact and exceedingly pedestrian-friendly, Vieille Ville exudes fairytale charm with cobbled streets, canals, and pastel houses ornamented by flower boxes. It’s the sort of place you don’t mind getting lost. In fact, wandering around — maybe stopping by one of the boulangeries or sitting down at a sidewalk café — is part of the laid-back allure of the old town.

Palais de I'Île

Built on a rocky island way back in the 12th century, Palais de I'Île has served many functions over the years:  a prison, a courthouse, a minting workshop, an administrative building, a gymnasium, and a school for stone carvers. Deservedly listed as a historic monument in 1900, the original medieval structure now plays host to a museum.

Château d’Annecy

Built on a hilltop above town, the storybook Château d’Annecy was home to the Counts of Geneva back in the 13th century. Today, it houses a museum with different sections that display local furniture, sculptures, and art as well as natural science exhibits.

Jardins de l'Europe

While the Gardens of Europe sit on the shore of Lake Annecy, this tree-lined park is a destination in its own right — not just somewhere to pass through in between other waterfront activities. Designed by Henri Porreaux in 1863, this lovely green space provides the ideal spot to relax, whether that’s with an afternoon picnic or a leisurely stroll.

SergiyN/Getty Images

Best Shopping

Annecy farmers market.

The Annecy Farmers Market operates every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday throughout the year. That means no matter what season you decide to visit, there will be an abundance of fresh produce and regional products like salami and cheese up for grabs.

Galeries Lafayette Annecy

The famous French department store Galeries Lafayette (perhaps you’re familiar with the flagship location on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris?) has an outpost in Annecy. It’s the place to go for contemporary and luxury designers, shoes, accessories, items for kids and men, beauty products, and home goods.

Pâtisserie Philippe Rigollot

The first stop for many travelers keen to indulge their sweet tooth while on holiday in Annecy, Pâtisserie Philippe Rigollot is a dessert shop known for its whimsical confectionery. With decadent cakes, scrumptious fruit tarts, and delicate macarons, it’s impossible to pick a favorite.

Chapellerie Pochat

The best souvenirs aren’t knick knacks but rather items that tell a story and have a distinctive sense of place. One of the oldest operating shops in Annecy, Chapellerie Pochat carries on century-old millinery traditions. The shelves are stocked with impeccably handcrafted hats you’ll wear forever.

Fromagerie Pierre Gay

The French know a thing or two about cheese, and Fromagerie Pierre Gay certainly confirms that fact. Established in 1935, this small shop is chock-full of the creamiest, most delectable reblochon, chevrotin, and aged goat tomme.

L'Esquisse

Awarded a coveted Michelin star for its innovative twists on homestyle French alpine cuisine, L'Esquisse draws foodies from near and far. Attention to detail in plating elevates the carefully selected seasonal ingredients and skilled cooking techniques. The entire experience feels upscale yet still soulful and unfussy.

Michelin-rated Cozna draws diners with its accolades that are backed up by the delicious, harvest-driven food and relaxed atmosphere. The menu changes with the season; recent standouts included smoked eel maki with cabbage and mussels, fennel, and buckwheat floating in a seaweed herb sauce.

Racines Annecy

Racines Annecy is an award-winning legacy operation with a modern mindset. Everything starts with the very best ingredients — from milk-fed veal to fresh-picked seasonal produce and herbs. Plates that look like art and, more importantly, taste divine are paired with natural wine.

Le Bistro du Rhone

Featuring deep red booths, colorful pop art, and mood-setting lighting, Le Bistro du Rhone oozes ambiance. The gastro food hits the mark, too. Diners especially praise the venison filet mignon with red wine-poached pear and slow-cooked Iberico pork as well as desserts like brown sugar crème brûlée.

Tête de Cochon

Further evidence that bigger doesn’t mean better, Tête de Cochon is a pint-sized eatery in the heart of Annecy that’s almost always packed thanks to its artful charcuterie boards, raclette tartine, and rich rillettes alongside crusty bread, plus interesting chalkboard-inspired decor and warm, friendly service.

Manfred Gottschalk/Getty Images

Many people think of the French Alps as a winter destination but Annecy proves it’s worth the journey any time of year. The colder season means access to skiable terrain and powder-dusted photo ops. When the temperature warms up, outdoor recreation in the form of lakeside strolls and boating takes center stage. The annual Annecy International Animated Film Festival takes place in June.

Annecy sits just 30 minutes from Chambéry Airport (CMF). Most travelers, however, opt to fly into Geneva Airport (GVA), located about 45 minutes away across the border in Switzerland, because it’s larger and welcomes more international arrivals. Alternatively, if you’re coming from somewhere nearby in France, it might be worth taking the train or bus since Annecy acts as a main hub for the Rhone-Alps region and the stations are conveniently located in the city center.

Annecy is quite walkable, especially the old town and lake shore, and easy to navigate on foot. The Voie Verte, one of the oldest greenways in France, attracts many cyclists. If you’re planning to explore neighboring villages, it’s a good idea to consult the bus and train schedules. It might be worth renting a car.

A Weekend in Annecy, France – 2 Day Itinerary

There is something very special about the french city of Annecy, a historic alpine town with arguably one of the most picturesque lakes in the world. The old town, with its castle, flowing canals and cobble streets takes you into a fairytale world, one where you are eating cheese fondue every day and wandering through fresh food markets tasting local produce. Spending a weekend, or 2 to 3 days, in Annecy is a perfect taster of this little alpine city.

This 1 to 3 day itinerary for spending the weekend in Annecy includes how to get there, the best things to see and do, and some hidden gems we discovered on our trip!

annecy weekend itinerary

How to get to Annecy

Flying to annecy.

Annecy itself doesn’t have an airport so to get to the city you must fly to either Lyon in France or Geneva in Switzerland.

Geneva to Annecy

Flying to Geneva is relatively easy, with regular flights from airports around Europe. However, many flights are not direct and stop in Zurich on the way, especially if you fly with Swiss air. For these flights, I actually suggest taking the train from Zurich to Geneva. It takes 3 hours rather than 1, however, you are less bound by delays, it is better for the environment, and ends up taking a similar amount of time when you account for connections.

From Geneva, there are several buses you can take to Annecy. They arrive semi-regularly but it is always best to book in advance. This way they are cheaper and you can better plan your trip.

Travel by bus or train

The other way to get to Annecy is by bus or train. This city is very well connected to major cities in both Switzerland and France so is very easily accessible! A common connection in France is Lyon, where there is a Flixbus that leaves every few hours! The best way to plan your bus travel to Annecy is using the companies Flixbus and Blablacar.

If you want to travel to Annecy by train then the best platform to book this through is the Trainline . This way you can find all sorts of different routes and book them in the same place!

cosy street in annecy france

Annecy as a day trip from Geneva

One day in annecy.

Although any place is best explored slowly, Annecy is still a great day trip from Geneva! The bus journey takes around 1 hour one way so gives you the whole day to explore the city! This weekend in Annecy itinerary still works for anyone planning a day trip from Geneva, however, you will want to prioritize the things to see and do that fit your travel style as it includes too much to fit into one day!

Alternatively, you can take a half day tour of Annecy which takes care of transport from Geneva and back and gives you the best the city has to offer!

Find out more here!

If you want a more private experience, there is also the option of a private trip for small groups ! Here you get your own private tour guide and the chance to explore the city in the way you want, without the hassle of arranging transfers and buying tickets.

Things to do in Annecy – 2 day weekend itinerary

This 2 to 3 day Annecy itinerary is set out as more of a guide of things to see and do rather than a strict timetable! As there are so many different ways to explore Annecy, the best way for everyone to plan their optimal weekend is to pick and choose their own activities!

Must see places and things to do in Annecy

Lake annecy.

Lake Annecy is something right out of a postcard. Crystal blue water against the layered mountain backdrop of the French alps, dotted with colourful pedalos and sailing boats throughout the summer months. No matter what time of year you are visiting, Lake Annecy is worth seeing, even if it is just to take a stroll down Le Pâquier d’Annecy.

Hire a Pedalo on Lake Annecy

You can’t go wrong with hiring a pedalo on Lake Annecy, paddling out to the middle of the lake and taking a swim in the refreshingly cold water! It is a must when visiting Annecy for a weekend in the summer. There are many different places to hire a pedalo, all lined up along the water to both sides of Pont des Amours.

Although there are various different companies, hiring a pedalo costs the same no matter which you choose! You pay for the first hour and then a set cost for every 15 minutes following!

We found that one hour was enough to peddle out a fair way, take a swim and peddle back. However, choosing 1.5 to 2 hours will take the stress off of your trip a little bit!

pedalo on lake annecy

Cycle around Lake Annecy

If you like cycling, then don’t miss the incredible cycling route that takes you around Lake Annecy. The cycle path is 42km in total and takes around 3 hours to complete without stopping. The path takes you past some of the most picturesque points of Lake Annecy. Don’t miss stopping at the town of Talloires on your way past, or exploring some of the smaller beaches along the way.

Swimming in Lake Annecy

As an alpine lake, the water in Lake Annecy never reaches high temperatures. However, that doesn’t take away from the experience of taking a dip here! There are a few different places close to Annecy city centre that make for good swimming spots! Two of my top recommendations are below!

Parc Charles Bosson

The swimming area in Parc Charles Bosson is the best place in Annecy to Swim. Along the water’s edge you can sit in the grassy park, swim from the dock or jump from the diving board at Plage de l’Imperial. In the summer months, this is a paid area, however, from September to June access is free and the park is open 24 hours a day!

If you are feeling up for it, and the weather permits, I definitely recommend a sunrise swim here! There is no better moment than when the sun rises over the mountains behind, sending light rays out across the lake.

swimming in lake annecy at sunrise

Plage d’Albigny

Plage d’Albigny is the main beach in Annecy, located just around the corner from the diving board at Plage de l’Imperial. The beach is quite small, but sandy with a shallow decline into the water!

Le Palais de I’Île

This medieval gaol is the centre of one of the most iconic views in Annecy’s old town. Located in the middle of two canals and only accessible by bridges on their side, it is a point that marks the historic centre of Annecy. The oldest parts dating back to the 12th century, this building has a history of being used as a prison, a courthouse and an administrative centre. Today, it is a museum and exhibition space.

Entry costs 3.90€ for adults and 2€ for children. You can book tickets in advance here, or on the day!

groupon voyage annecy

Château d’Annecy

Château d’Annecy is more commonly known as Annecy Castle, a big residence turned military barracks that overlooks the city. The castle dates back to the 13th century, with later additions being added over the next 300 years. Today, the castle is home to a great museum. The museum is open every day except Tuesdays and costs 5.60€ for adults and 3€ for children and students.

Pont des Amours

Pont des Amours, or the lover bridge, is an iron bridge in the centre of Annecy, designed to give a beautiful view over the lake. Made of iron and designed by Charles Galletto, Pont des Amours connects the two sides of the Canal du Vasse – the European Gardens and the Paquier Esplanade. This is a popular spot for visitors, the legend states that those who kiss in the middle of the bridge will stay together for life.

Stroll around Annecy Market

The best market in Annecy to visit is the old town market. This runs every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday morning and fills the streets of the old town. The stalls are usually open from 8am until just before midday, selling local fruits and vegetables, cheese, meats, and handmade crafts!

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Haute-Savoie

Annecy - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Haute-Savoie

Capital of the Haute-Savoie , Annecy is a city of Art with a magnificent architectural harmony. Walking around Annecy old town is a real delight. With its charming canals, its flower-bedecked banks, its small delightful bridges and its beautiful houses with colourful facades, Annecy carries really well its nickname of Savoyard Venice. How pleasant it is to stroll along its canals or walk around the lovely narrow pedestrian streets!

In the heart of the old town, the Île palace, a former prison and the Palais de Justice (law courts), is today home to the Annecy History museum. Near this symbolic building of the 12th century, the Sainte-Claire street is also an unmissable place during the visit for its beautiful arcaded houses. Towering over the town, the museum-castle, former residence of the counts of Geneva and the dukes of Genevois-Nemours, is dedicated to archaeology, ethnology, art, history and alpine lakes.

To complete this beautiful visit, there's nothing like a walk on the edge of the magnificent Annecy lake. Not to be missed! The Europe gardens, the Amours bridge spanning the Vassé canal, the Albigny avenue lined with plane trees and the Champ de Mars are magnificent sites great for relaxation. For the best way to discover the lake and surrounding mountains, visitors can take a trip on tourist boats or hire pedalos and small motor boats.

Additional information Annecy

Pearl of the French Alps or Venice of the Alps, there is no shortage of laudatory names to name The capital of Haute Savoie , the metropolis is famous for its lake and the majesty of its places. Surrounded by the sumptuous Bauges and Bornes massifs, the town is at the entry point to the lake's lock. The landscape alternates between plains and wooded hills, massifs bristling with conifers and the lake bordered by extraordinary nature. It is in this magnificent setting that the city extends mainly over the plains.

Perched at an altitude of 446 meters, Lake Annecy is the second largest natural lake in France and the first lake in Europe for the purity of its waters.

An important Gallo-Roman city, Annecy was already called the Rome of the Alps when it took strong positions in the Catholic Reformation. It became the residence of the Counts of Geneva in the 12th century and was definitively French on March 24, 1860 when Savoy was annexed by France. A history rich in twists and turns, a strong culture and an exceptional natural environment make Annecy an exceptional place. A multitude of activities and leisure activities are within your reach.

Its surface area is 1,700 hectares, including 300 hectares of municipal forest, 1.7 km of the edge of the Annecy lake, 11.7 km of the edge of the Fier torrent, 25 km of cycle paths.

The town of Cran-Gevrier takes place in Haute-Savoie . Located in the suburb of Annecy, it is located in the heart of the Alps, on a hill. Also bordering Poisy or Chavanod , it benefits from an exceptional natural setting.

Dynamic and inventive, the locality enjoys great notoriety in the region, in particular thanks to its economic and tourist development. Populated since Roman times, the site was once occupied by a villa. Today, the town of Cran-Gevrier welcomes a large number of visitors wishing to discover the historical heritage of the Savoyard city. Its proximity to Annecy also gives it cultural influence. The numerous cultural events offered throughout the year also make Cran-Gevrier a success.

Former small town located north of Annecy, Pringy is a pleasant town with a mountain climate. Located in the heart of Haute-Savoie, it takes place on the ancient road to Geneva, bordering Argonay and Annecy-le-Vieux.

Pleasant, Pringy benefits from its proximity to Lake Annecy, which gives it an environment full of charm and a slightly mild climate. Its pleasant landscapes and green spaces earned it two flowers in the competition for towns and villages in bloom in France. Close to the Swiss border, the location is ideal for exploring the rest of the region or a very close neighbor.

There is no shortage of leisure activities, and in addition to outdoor and sporting activities, the town of Pringy offers the possibility of admiring an interesting architectural heritage based on old stones and monuments in the style typical of this part of the Savoy.

Seynod, neighboring Annecy and its lake famous for the purity of its waters, is located at the crossroads of the main routes to Paris, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. Located to the southwest of the Annecy metropolitan area, Seynod stretches at the foot of the Semnoz mountain, facing west, over 10 km long.

The territorial and demographic expansion of Seynod was favored by the merger with Vieugy in 1965 and with Balmont in 1973. This association merger was transformed into a full merger on July 1, 1997. Seynod currently has nearly 18,000 inhabitants.

Thus Seynod was transformed into a town in its own right with urban and industrial facilities. Today, nearly 1,000 companies or businesses are located in economic activity zones. Living the economy well is a priority for the locality of Seynod. Covering an area of approximately 24 hectares and located to the southwest and partly along departmental road 1201, the Périaz district will allow the creation of new housing, businesses and jobs.

Finally, Seynod has a real town center, a center of life. This is made up of two squares, the Town Hall and Saint-Jean, articulated around the Paseo de Malgrat de Mar. These two squares, as well as the avenue de Champ Fleuri are animated by numerous shops and services. proximity.

The administrative center opens onto the Town Hall Square. The town hall, the Media Library, the Polyèdre and the Auditorium are therefore very easily accessible.

Things to see and do

Among the highlights of Annecy, the lake is undoubtedly one of the most popular natural sights. Several beaches, sand or grass, you will enjoy the sweet season. Young and old will find their happiness both for a game of beach volleyball and to play a game of petanque furious. You will also have a picnic area. At night, a nightclub opens its doors to dance until the end of the night in this magical setting. But Lake Annecy also allows water activities from the quietest to the most sensational. You can rent pedal boats or go wakeboarding. Three marinas and mooring area are available where you can enjoy boating. Finally, many walks around the lake are on the program.

To discover this beautiful landscape from another point of view, you can embark on your choice on a catamaran, on old wooden boats or on a private boat for an unforgettable cruise on the lake. The immense expanse of water is also discovered by gyrocopter, hot air balloon or even microlight airs.

But Annecy is also a city of art and culture. Starting with its castle classified as an historic monument. Home of the famous counts of Geneva, the immaculately preserved building now houses a museum and ephemeral exhibitions. The imposing building combines a defensive style of impregnable fortress with the refined charm of the Île-de-France buildings. The visit continues with the old prisons of the Palais de l'Isle. Initially toll zone on the Thiou, the building quickly became alternately a prison, an asylum or a court, today to house the splendid exhibitions of the Center of Interpretation of Architecture and Heritage. In addition to the exhibited collections, you can visit the cells at the water's edge, the chapel and several rooms at various destinations.

During your walks in Annecy, you will be led to discover many old houses having kept all their stamp as the Gallo house of Italian influence of the eighteenth century or the hotel de Sales , residence of the Princes of the House of Savoy. The religious heritage is not left behind with the St. Peter's Cathedral dating from the sixteenth century. Built in the old Annecy, the building is of Renaissance style outside and Gothic style inside. Among other remarkable wood carvings, you can admire an organ over 7 meters high, classified as an historic monument.

Cran-Gevrier is not lacking in tourist interest, thanks to its historical monuments.

Built in the place of a Romanesque church dating from the 11th century, the chapel of Gevrier is today the oldest religious monument of all around Annecy. Disused in the 1970s, it was renovated in 2010. You can also enjoy other religious monuments like the church of Pont Neuf in 1936, the church of St. Genevieve des Bressis, the Sacred Church heart of Mosinges, beautiful example of sacred art of Vatican II, or the beautiful church of the Annunciation in Vallon. Built in the 1970s, it has a beautiful Neo-Gothic style.

The statue of St. Joseph, which dominates the district of Sous-Aléry, or the grotto of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, built because the area had been protected during bombings in 1943, are also interesting.

Old fortified house of the fifteenth century, the castle Alery formerly allowed to monitor the roads of Rumilly and Chambery. Very old, the original building served as a farm in the Gallo-Roman era before being fortified in the eleventh century. The majority of today's remains date from the 15th and 16th centuries. You can still admire a farmyard, quadrangular houses, or even a portal point.

Listed as a historic monument for its facades and roofs, the castle Promery is a former stronghold of the fourteenth century. Outside, one can discover a main building flanked by square towers, while inside several portraits of René Favre, Marie de Villaret or Vaugelas, are exposed. The Château de Monthoux, also an old fortified house, is also worth a visit.

Of Sardinian neo-classical style, the Saint-Maurice church was originally built in the 15th century in a Romanesque style. Partly destroyed in the mid-nineteenth century, it has seen its architectural appearance strongly modified. One can appreciate a beautiful statue of Saint Michael Archangel of the fifteenth century. The windows of the choir, which notably show Saint Maurice in warrior dress, are classified as Historical Monuments.

City where life is good, Seynod has many cultural facilities (media library, music school) and sports to ensure a comfortable life for its people. Cinema and entertainment fans will be able to enjoy themselves in the Auditorium, while sportsmen will practice their favorite sport in one of the structures (gymnasium, tennis club), through numerous hikes on the trails, horseback riding or well go relax at the nautical center L'Ile Bleue with its wellness and fitness area.

On the associative side, Cap Périaz Espace Jacques Besson is a quality equipment that can accommodate associations, individuals, and companies for conferences, forums or exhibitions. This space comes in complementarity of the already existing places of welcome as the Saint Martin room and the house of Malaz.

What to expect in Annecy

Since Annecy is such a beloved tourist destination, most people you come in contact with will be able to communicate with you in English.

Since Francophones are notoriously proud of their language, you might like to learn some greetings in French, if you don’t yet know any. As a visitor, a simple bonjour and merci will show respect to the locals.

France makes it easy for travellers by using the euro. Debit and credit cards are accepted everywhere too, and there are plenty of ATMs in town.

The best time to visit Annecy

Annecy is absolutely gorgeous no matter the season. That said, the large lake makes it an ideal spot for summer vacationers. June and August are two of the busiest months to visit Annecy, and not just because they’re during summer.

The annual Annecy International Animated Film Festival takes place in June, while the Annecy Lake Festival is on in August. The latter is known for its hour-long fireworks display that draws over 200,000 spectators, so you might like to visit while this festival is on to make your trip extra memorable.

During autumn and spring, Annecy remains lively and vibrant, only with cooler temperatures. In winter, you’ll be able to look out at the snow-topped mountains of the Alps, and take some day trips out for skiing and snowboarding.

Things to do in Annecy

No matter the season, there’s always plenty of things to do in Annecy . Here’s a rundown of some of the top attractions to see during your Annecy sightseeing adventures, as well as some of the most enjoyable activities to take part in.

Visit Annecy Castle

Easily one of the most iconic places to visit in Annecy is Annecy Castle. Château d’Annecy, as it’s known in French, is a restored castle turned museum.

Permanent collections showcase Alps-related artwork, medieval sculptures and regional furnishings.

While the Queen’s Tower dates back to the 12th century, there were several additions to the historic monument up until the 16th century.

Once home to the Counts of Geneva, the castle was abandoned during the 17th century and not restored until 1947. The walls of the castle are 4 metres thick and 38 metres tall, allowing it to also serve as a barracks.

Walk across Lover’s Bridge

The Pont des Amours is a wonderful spot to visit with your special someone. While you won’t find any locks on the bridge like the Parisian Pont des Arts, an old legend states that those who kiss in the middle of the bridge will stay together forever.

The short and scenic footbridge crosses the Thiou River north of the Jardin l’Europe. While the original wooden bridge was built in 1845, the current iron bridge has stood since 1907.

Regardless of your relationship status or who you’re travelling with, you should definitely pay the bridge a visit to admire the view and snap some stunning photos.

Try out a new water sport

The most notable landmark in the region is Lake Annecy (or Lac d’Annecy in French). As the third largest lake in France, there are a ton of activities to try out.

As you would expect, summer is the best time for water sports. Sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding only scratch the surface of the amount of memorable outdoor activities available.

For scuba diving beginners, there are numerous instructors offering introductions and refresher courses throughout the summer. If you’re an experienced diver, you can explore the 1971 La France shipwreck off the shore of Annecy-le-Vieux.

Rent a pedal boat known as a pedalo and explore the lake at your own pace. Pedalos come in two or four seats with deckchairs, so you can pedal out and relax on the water for a while. For something speedier, motorboats for up to six people can be borrowed without a license.

Head to the beach

I’ll bet you weren’t expecting a beach in the French Alps, but Plage des Marquisats will leave you pleasantly surprised! The lakeside Marquisats Beach is the place to be during summer in Annecy.

The sand and grass areas by Annecy Lake are free to access, and the shallow, crystal-clear waters are perfect for cooling down on a hot and sunny day.

Plage des Marquisats is just one of 11 beautiful beaches around Lake Annecy, all of which are supervised with lifeguards throughout July and August. If it happens to be overcrowded while you’re there, try Plage de Menthon-Saint-Bernard or Plage de Talloires, both of which are on the east side of the lake.

Wander the old town

One of the main areas of Annecy, and not to mention the most charming, is Vieille Ville (aka the old town). It’s a joy to take your time and stroll aimlessly through the narrow streets.

You’ll uncover some of the most gorgeous views along the way, particularly once you reach Perrière Bridge. Sip a café au lait at any of the whimsical cafes alongside the Thiou River and soak up the beauty and charm.

Every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, you can peruse the Old Town Market free of charge. While Tuesdays are reserved for local produce, Fridays and Sundays have many more stalls offering a wider variety of goods. Pop by Rue Sainte-Claire on any of these days between seven in the morning and one in the afternoon.

You might also like to stop by Palais de I’lle, a triangular-shaped palace that sits on a tiny island in the middle of the river. Since the 12th century, the building has historically been used as a jail, a care home for the elderly, an administrative centre and a private residence.

Saved from demolishment, the palace became a museum in 1952. It currently showcases temporary art shows and permanent exhibitions detailing the history of the area.

What to eat in Annecy

Similar to the rest of France, cheese is everywhere in Annecy. Some of the famous cheeses in the Haute-Savoie area include abondance, reblochon, beaufort and chevrotin.

If you’re interested in trying some, visit the renowned Pierre Gay cheese shop (aka “fromagerie”) on Rue Carnot or Crèmerie du Lac on Rue du Lac. For some classic fondue, you can’t go past Le Freti or L’Alpin , both on Rue Sainte-Claire.

When dining out, you’ll have a number of great local dishes to try as well. Here are some of our recommendations for what to look for on the menu:

Tartiflette: Originating from Savoy in the Alps, this baked dish is made with potatoes, reblochon cheese, onions and cream. While warming and comforting on its own, bacon is often added too.

French Tartiflette Recipe Bacon, Potato and Reblochon Cheese Gratin

Soupe aux cailloux: Based on a French folk tale, stone soup is prepared using a large round stone to blend the ingredients together. Green cabbage, potatoes, leek, carrots and turnips are the most commonly used vegetables, with added bacon or chicken.

Brioche de Saint-Genix: This local take on brioche includes red pralines and a little extra sweetness. Pick one of up from a local boulangerie (bakery) or enjoy at a cafe with your afternoon tea or coffee.

Gâteau de Savoie: Another favourite dessert from the region, this simple cake made from flour, corn, sugar and eggs is served with apple jam.

Mussels: For a break away from the cheese, order some all-you-can-eat mussels from Captain Pub on Rue du Pont Morens or Brasserie de l’Abbaye on Rue du Paquier.

Another unique way to see Annecy is a one to two-hour segway tour . It’s a good option if you’re pressed for time, since you’ll be able to cover more ground than you would on a walking tour. Travelling along the waterfront promenades, you’ll stop to admire the Jardin de l’Europe, Charles Bosson and Pâquier gardens, as well as the Imperial Palace.

Weekend in Annecy: Where to Stay?

For your Annecy trip, we recommend staying out of the Old Town, which is usually jam-packed and noisy until late at night.

Hotel des Alpes is located just opposite the train station, so it is a great option for train travelers. The rooms are on the small side but well equipped and decorated with style. Hotel des Alpes is only a 10-minute walk to the Old Town.

Les Filateries Chambres d’Hotes is a great option for those who prefer to stay in the Old Town and are tired of big hotels. The rooms are cozy and stylish, and the breakfast is excellent.

Black Bass Hotel is the perfect place for a relaxing weekend in Annecy. Located less than 3 km from the Old Town, it proposes stylish rooms (with lake or forest view) and beautiful grounds with views of the lake.

  • Road trip in the French Alps

Two Days in Annecy: Day One

Stroll around the old town.

groupon voyage annecy

Above all, Annecy is known for its Old Town, which is particularly beautiful to discover. Beyond its few canals and quays always full of flowers, this two days in Annecy itinerary necessarily involves a walk around its medieval city center, with narrow winding streets and colorful architecture.

groupon voyage annecy

The list of beautiful things to see in Annecy Old Town includes:

  • Palais de l’Isle , the symbol of Annecy, built on a little isle in the Thiou River
  • Porte Perrière , one of the few remains of the medieval ramparts in Annecy
  • Place Sainte-Claire , one of the most beautiful squares in Annecy.
  • Cathédrale Saint-Pierre , built in the 16th century
  • Rue Royale . This commercial street is quite large compared to the surrounding streets and is lined with beautiful buildings and stores.

Visit the Château d’Annecy

groupon voyage annecy

^Inside the courtyard

This medieval fortress overlooking Annecy dates back to the 14th century, and it was home to the Counts of Geneva and later the Duques of Savoye. Today, it hosts temporary exhibitions dedicated to the regional heritage, archaeology, and beaux-arts.

The ticket to the château costs 5.50€. For 7,20€, however, there’s a combo ticket to visit the three museums in the city (Château d’Annecy, Palais de l’Île, Musée du Film d’Animation), which is valid for two days. You can buy these tickets on-site in any of these three museums.

Explore the Canals of Annecy

groupon voyage annecy

Often nicknamed the Little Venice of the Alps , the canals of Annecy offer great viewpoints of the city.

Annecy is crossed by the Thiou River, which flows into the lake. This river splits into two branches at the Quai des Clarisses and Quai des Cordeliers and then continues its way through Annecy, sometimes flowing underground.

Take the time to look for the prettiest canals of Annecy, always full of flowers, for some perfect postcard pictures.

Relax by Lake Annecy

groupon voyage annecy

Lake Annecy , with good weather, is a postcard landscape with its surrounding mountains, pristine waters, and flowered shores. Today, Lake Annecy is one of the purest lakes in Europe, with waters that can reach up to 24C during the hottest days of the year.

groupon voyage annecy

Hanging around the lake is one of the best things to do in Annecy . The best places for walking and relaxing on the shores of Lake Annecy are:

  • The Gardens of Europe is also great for a picnic on the grass or a nap in the shade
  • Le Pâquier, this 7 Hectare esplanade by the lake is the dream place for a picnic but also the corner for joggers and walkers.
  • Plage des Marquisats , in the south of the city. This is a green space laid out like a “beach,” with showers, toilets, and other facilities.
  • Plage de l’Impérial , similar to Plage des Marquisats but in the north of the city.

And, of course, there are many water activities in the lake, like paddling or boat cruises. For more freedom, you can  rent a boat in Annecy  (different types available) to spend an afternoon or a day on the lake.

Dangle your Feet in the Water at Le Pâquier

groupon voyage annecy

After a hearty Savoyard dinner, leave the crowds of the Old Town and go to the Pâquier for some fresh air and a stroll along the Canal du Vassé .

Between 1852 and 1863, Le Pâquier (a Savoyard word that means “pasture”) was cleansed and filled up, and the quays were built up, giving the place its current appearance. The Pâquier and the Gardens of Europe are linked via a metallic footbridge, nicknamed the Pont des Amours (Love Bridge) by locals.

Le Pâquier is one of the most picturesque places to visit in Annecy, especially beautiful in the afternoon and until sunset. Close to the Pont des Amours, some wooden pontoons are perfect for a last drink for two dangling your feet in the water. After walking all day exploring the Old Town, this was heaven for my feet!!!

Two Days in Annecy: Day Two

Lake annecy.

Annecy Lake - France

If you decide to spend 2 days in Annecy, France, use the second day to explore Lake Annecy’s surroundings.

Most of the best day trips from Annecy include activities in or around this lake. For example, Annecy is one of the top spots for paragliding in France, with awesome eye bird views guaranteed. If you opt for a bike ride, there are many places to rent one in the Old Town, and you will have 42 km of cycle paths around the lake for your delight. You can decide the do the full tour, explore the lake’s small towns, or stop at one of the beaches.

groupon voyage annecy

We chose one of the hottest summer weekends to travel to Annecy, and the lake beaches were jam-packed. Finally, we found a hidden spot perfect for a picnic on the grass and a bath with a view (named ‘Plage du Château’ on Google maps). The castle in the background is Château de Duingt, built on a small peninsula.

A Relaxing Afternoon by the Lake

groupon voyage annecy

Lake Annecy’s extraordinary natural scenery is the perfect background for a relaxing afternoon. The shores of the lake are dotted with beach bars to chill out while sipping your favorite cocktail. There are also beautiful beachfront hotels offering great facilities for a relaxing stay like a private beach, bar-terrace, and even yoga classes with a view

For this Annecy trip, we preferred to stay out of the hustle and bustle of the Old Town, and we booked a room at the beautiful Black Bass Hotel , located on the outskirts of Annecy. With a pool and surrounding grounds with beautiful lake views, this lazy afternoon in the hotel was one of our favorite things to do in Annecy.

Lake Geneva in Switzerland - Best Day Trips From Annecy

Located less than an hour from Annecy via bus or car, Geneva is a fun and easy day trip to take from Annecy. Via train, it is closer to about 1.5 hours away.

Pop over to this international city on the banks of Lake Geneva. Geneva is known for being the headquarters of many organizations including the World Health Organization, United Nations, World Trade Organization, and more.

But some fun things to do in Geneva for a day include wandering around Lake Geneva and spotting the Jet d’Eau, a huge water spout in the lake. Enjoy exploring Geneva Old Town and walking along charming cobblestone streets.

It is also worth stopping by the Palace of Nations, the United Nations office in Geneva, and finding the broken chair statue outside, which was built to honor those who have lost limbs due to land mines.

There are also ample gardens, museums, and more to check out during your day trip to Geneva from Annecy. But no matter what, be sure to try some famous Swiss Chocolate!

2. Day Trip From Annecy to Chamonix

Chamonix in France - Cutest Towns in France

Located about 1.5 hours via car or bus, or about 2.5 hours via train, you could visit Chamonix to see the mountains up close and enjoy some stunning views.

Definitely be sure to take the Aiguille du Midi cable car up to the top of the mountain for the most incredible scenery. Standing at a whopping 12,605 ft (3,842 m), you’ll be able to see mountains all over! Be sure to purchase a ticket in advance !

If you’re daring enough, you can Step Into the Void at the Aiguille du Midi Skywalk to see the ground below your feet!

From here, you’ll be able to see Italy, France, and Switzerland! And if you want to see these peaks, definitely opt for summer, as parts of this experience can close in the winter due to the weather.

Chamonix is also a great place for a day of skiing in winter or hiking in the summer. You can also go on white water rafting trips or perhaps try paragliding!

Even the town itself is endlessly charming.

3. Day Trip to Lyon

Lyon during the day

For foodies, the ultimate day trip from Annecy has to be to the gastronomic capital of France: Lyon .

Lyon is about a 1.5-2 hour drive from Annecy or about 2 hours via train.

Explore the Old City and learn all about the silk industry back in the day, find the Gallo-Roman amphitheater and visit the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière, and definitely be sure to take a food tour .

Known as the foodie capital of France, Lyon has some fantastic restaurants and cuisine, many of which can be enjoyed on a food tour of the city. Regardless, though, be sure to stop by Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse. This food market is well known for its amazing produce, baked goods, meat, and more!

Lyon is also situated along the banks of the Saone and Rhone rivers, and they even meet in the city. You can visit the confluence of these rivers and check out the Musée des Confluences which has exhibits on science and anthropology.

This ancient city is always a great day trip from Annecy.

4. Relax at Aix-les-Bains

Ariel view of Lake Bourget near Aix-Les-Bains

Only about a half hour from Annecy via car or 25 minutes via train, for those who prefer to have a relaxing day trip from Annecy, definitely head to Aix-les-Bains.

This place is along the shores of Lake Bourget and is a thermal spa town. So if you want to indulge in spa treatments or just want to soak in a thermal bath, this is the place.

Some great spas to check out include Spa Parenthesis Aix Les Bains , Valvital – Thermes Chevalley Aix-les-Bains , and Hotel & Spa Golden Tulip Aix Les Bains .

Aix-les-Bains is also a lovely place to enjoy the beaches along Lake Bourget.

5. Bike Trip Around Lake Annecy

Sunny day on Lake Annecy

If you prefer to stick around Lake Annecy, why not rent a bike and bike the circumference of this stunning alpine lake?

This bike ride is about 27 miles (43 km) of distance, and if you only have time for a half-day trip from Annecy, you can do this in about 3 hours or so.

But, there are ample smaller towns and beautiful beaches to enjoy along the way, making this bike ride really fun for taking your time and enjoying all the sights!

Enjoy little towns like Sevrier, Saint-Jorez, Duingt, and more as you bike along the rim of the lake. Stop by the Château de Duingt for beautiful castle views along the lake, the nature reserve at Bout-du-Lac, and, of course, spot ample mountains around the lake.

6. Hike La Tournette

La Tournette in the mountains

If you want to get really active, why not hike at La Tournette? This is the highest peak overlooking Lake Annecy at 7,713 feet (2,351 m) high.

I recommend perhaps getting a guide for this hike, as it always helps to have a local guide. This hike starts at Chalet de l’Aulp and takes about 6.5 hours to complete with an elevation gain of 3,117 feet (950 m).

It definitely isn’t for the faint of heart, as there are some steep hills, but the views of the mountains, lake, and even the chance to spot wildlife are well worth the effort.

I recommend going with a guide for safety reasons but you’ll also get more context about the flora and fauna of the area.

Check out this guided hike here !

7. Sip the Best of the Savoie Wine Region

Mountains and vineyards of the Savoie wine region

Want to sip wine amongst old castle ruins while you’re staring at a glacier off in the distance?

Wine regions are truly stunning worldwide, but the Savoie seriously takes the cake. And what better way to enjoy this area than with a hiking and wine day trip?

Take the 40-minute train from Annecy to Chambery and get picked up by Bernard with Alpes Flaveurs for a fun day of hiking, vineyard and mountain views, and amazing wine.

You can book this day trip by emailing [email protected] .

Some notable white wines to enjoy during your time around the Savoie wine region include Jacquère,  Roussette, and Roussanne, as well as red wines like Mondeuse, Pinot Noir, and Gamay.

8. Hit the Slopes Around Annecy in Winter

Skier on the slopes in France

Visiting Annecy any time of year is amazing, but Annecy in winter is the place to be for winter sports enthusiasts.

With ample ski resorts nearby, you could easily take many day trips from Annecy to the alps for skiing and snowboarding.

Some resorts nearby include Le Semnoz, La Clusaz, and Le Grand-Bornand. Spend a day zipping down the slopes of differering challenges and enjoy some apres-ski afterward!

9. Explore Chambery

Chambery

I mentioned the town of Chambery before as a place to take the train for your wine tour, but it is also well worth exploring. Located about 45 minutes via car or 40 minutes via train, Chambery is a lovely town in a valley in the Alps.

A notable thing to do in Chambery includes visiting the Fontaine des Elephants, a large fountain with the front of an elephant on each of the 4 sides.

You can also learn about the history of the Savoie region at the Chateau des Ducs de Savoie, which was the former home to the dukes and counts of Savoie.

A walk around the old city is always lovely! And, being in the heart of the Savoie wine region, you can expect to find many lovely wines in the area to enjoy.

10. Visit Evian-les-Bains

Pool at Evian-Les-Bains

Located along the shores of Lake Geneva (or Lac Leman) you can visit the town where this famous brand of water comes from!

Only a little over an hour by car or 2 hours by train from Annecy, this lake town is another great spa town to visit.

Definitely swing by the Cachat Springs Point of Emergence where you can drink the famous (and sometimes pricey water) straight from the source for free! Be sure to pack your water bottle on this day trip from Annecy!

From there, head to the Funiculaire d’Evian to ride up to enjoy a blast from the past on this vintage funicular. This funicular was built to get the people staying at the fancy hotels in the hills to the town itself.

And, you can’t leave Evian-les-Bains without some much-needed spa time. Enjoy some R&R at places like Le Spa Evian Source – Hôtel Royal , Spa Taaj-Ayurveda , and Evian les Thermes .

While you’re here, you can also get out on the lake and see beautiful Switzerland on the other side.

11. Explore Massif des Bauges Regional Nature Park

Semnoz in France

This could easily take up a long time, but if you only have a day, you could certainly see some highlights of the Massif des Bauges Regional Nature Park.

This park is massive and sits between Annecy, Chambery, and Aix-les-Bains. There are so many cute little villages and hiking trails in the area to explore.

This is one of the day trips from Annecy that makes sense if you have a car, as it’ll be hard to do without your own transportation. Go hiking at the Semnoz Plateau, eat local cuisine in charming villages, and perhaps visit the monastery of La Chartreuse d’Aillon.

This place is a great spot to learn about the heritage of this area and explore an old monastery.

Either way, this is a lovely place to explore for a day!

While there are so many great places to visit in a day from Annecy, these are the best day tours from Annecy, France that you’ll want to enjoy ASAP!

Which day trip from Annecy would you most like to do?

4 thoughts on “11 Best Day Trips From Annecy France”

Hello, Kate I am planning the details of a mother/daughter river cruising trip in May from Lyon to Arles. Since my daughter would really like to see the Alps, I am thinking that, arriving in Lyon, I will immediately take the train or bus to Annecy to spend the rest of the day and then take a day trip to Chamonix the next day. We will then return that evening and head back to Lyon the next day. Does that sound like too extensive of an itinerary? To see a good view of the Alps, does one need to travel as far as Chamonix from Annecy? Thank you so much.

Hi Pauline! That sounds like fun! I will say that does sound a bit rushed. Annecy is an alpine town, and you can see the Alps on the other side of Lake Annecy. So if she wants to see the mountains, she’ll be able to do that in Annecy. There are also great hikes from Annecy for hiking in the mountains. If you want to go to Chamonix for the Alps, I recommend just going straight there from Lyon and skipping Annecy then since you only have a couple of days. It is about a 2.5-hour drive from Lyon to get to Chamonix (depending on traffic) so you could just do that. There is also the option of visiting Grenoble for a day from Lyon. This city is surrounded by mountains and is stunning. You can hike up or take the cable car to the Bastille and see incredible views of the Alps. I hope this helps and have a great time!

HI Pauline, I have 8 nights from Geneva to Paris (i.e. my flight will be departing from Paris). Intending to go to Chamonix, Annecy and Lyon before reaching Paris. Not sure how many nights I would need for these places and I don’t ski. So wonder if the below makes sense.

Geneva – 3 nights with a day trip to Chamonix Annecy – 2 nights Lyon – 2 nights Paris -1 night

Not sure If I should stay in Geneva 3 nights or Annecy just 1 night or Lyon 3 nights? And if I am being too ambitious to cover so many places. Thanks for your help and looking forward to you advice.

Hi Grace! I think that schedule does make sense. I think a day trip to Chamonix from Geneva is doable, and you can even book a day trip from Geneva on GetYourGuide which is great. I loved Annecy and think 2 days is a good amount of time to really explore it. And the train from Geneva to Annecy is about 1.5-2 hours so you won’t lose too much time transferring to Annecy. I do recommend leaving early to get to Lyon, as it does take a little longer to get there. I think you can see a lot of Lyon in 2 days as well. I’m assuming you’ve been to Paris before since you’re only planning to spend a night. If that’s the case, then I think this works, as long as you don’t mind a couple of earlier mornings to get between cities.

Check-in fait à l'avance mais à l'arrivée, 20 mn pour avoir ma chambre à cause de l'incapacité à faire une facture. Je ne comprends pas que les deux personnes à l'accueil soient toutes deux nouvelles ... Quelle erreur !
