Randall Hank Williams better known as Hank Williams, Jr. and Bocephus, is an American country singer-songwriter and musician, he's the son of legendary country music singer Hank Williams.

Williams' early career definitely seemed to centre around his father's music. Williams first performed on stage by singing one of his father's songs when he was eight years old. In 1964, he made his recording debut with 'Long Gone Lonesome Blues', one of his father's many classic songs. Williams provided the singing voice of his father in the 1964 film 'Your Cheatin' Heart' and also recorded an album of duets with his father.

Williams' early career was guided, and to an extent dominated, by his mother, who is widely claimed as being the driving force that led his late father to musical superstar status during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Audrey promoted young Hank Jr. as a Hank Williams tribute act, even to the extent of having stage clothes designed for him that were identical to his father's, and encouraging vocal styles very similar to those of his father.

This all became too much for the young musician who eventually severed the ties with his mother in an attempt to find his own musical voice. By the mid-1970s Williams began to pursue a musical direction that would eventually make him a superstar. At the time of recording a series of moderately successful songs, Williams began a heavy pattern of both drug and alcohol abuse. Upon moving to Alabama, in an attempt to refocus both his creative energy and his troubled personal life, Williams began playing music with Southern rock musicians including Waylon Jennings, Toy Caldwell, and Charlie Daniels.

He has achieved huge commercial success on the US Country charts over his career, most notably a run of six albums released between 1984 and 1988 which all topped the chart. He has had countless wins and nominations at Academy of Country Music and the Grammy Awards.

Live reviews

Still touring and going strong at the ripe old age of 65, Hank Williams Jr. (the son of arguably country music's most famous figure) is currently one of country music's famous assets, very much like his father. With over thirty albums recorded to date, the discography of Hank Williams Jr. is nothing short of incredibly impressive. Not only this, but he certainly knows how to get a crowd rocking, as shown through one of his most recent sets at Chilifest 2014. Hank's loud and booming voice echoed round the entire audience in the large open venue as he kicked off with 'If The South Woulda Won' where a nifty saxophone solo was very much appreciated by everyone. It was impossible to stop moving all the way through this concert as nearly every song had that foot-tapping melody that is so consistent in country music. Alcohol was being thrown everywhere in crowd as the set progressed, which included the songs 'All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight' and 'The Blues Man'. What was beautiful about this performance though was the touching tributes to his late father as he covered several songs from Hank Williams Snr. such as 'Your Cheating Heart' – a clear fan favourite.

Hank Williams Jr. clearly has many more years of touring in him and with such a plethora of songs at his disposal, you'll never know quite what to expect, but you can be sure that there will be classics galore!

As the son of one of the all-time icons of the country genre, Hank Williams, it’s perhaps not surprising that Hank Williams Jr. would go on to follow on his father’s footsteps - to some extent, at least. He certainly can’t be accused of failing to put his own spin on the genre, or of simply trading off of his father’s name and songs; instead, he brought a rough and ready rock approach the country sound, one that’s often been described as ‘outlaw country’, or just lumped in with the hard southern rock sound that’s become so prominent on the U.S. rock scene these past few decades. Either way, there’s no question that Williams has been commercially successful as a result; he’s made no fewer than fifty-four studio albums, which overall have shifted in excess of thirty six million copies; his most recent full-length, Old School New Rules, dropped in 2012. He continues to tour the U.S. extensively, although his audience outside of his homeland is limited; his cult fanbase turn up to his shows for both the high-octane country rock that characterises them, and Williams’ now-infamous - but indeed customary - rants against President Barack Obama, a staple of the shows since he took office.

I suppose when you are the offspring of one of country music's all time greats, the natural talent was going to be somewhat inherited. That is not to say that Hank Williams, Jr has not earned his own loyal fanbase upon his own merits. At the age of 65 he continues to tour extensively due to the demand remaining ever present to hear his classic material on the big stage.

It is clear from the very moment that Hank steps out and greets both his accompanying musicians and the waiting crowds that performing is very much keeping him young at heart. He looks so comfortable onstage and clearly still enjoys playing classic songs including 'Country State of Mind' and 'Keep The Change' which sound as fresh as ever partly thanks to his solid instrumental abilities. There is not one moment that Williams looks as though he is struggling with notes or his own guitar, yet if he had the slick backing band gathered would have covered him with ease. By the final country tones of 'Family Tradition' both audience and performer have had one hell of a great evening.

I enjoyed the show overall however I wasn't there to see that much of Stapleton and that less of Hank. Where was My name is Bocephis? Where was Blues man. Where was Man of steel. I've seen Hank many many times but this was not my favorite show by any stretch of the imagination. Vocals were not loud enough and the instruments were too loud. Parking Wanda horendous experience. I will not be back to this MidFlorida Amphitheatre ever again

AWESOME show! I’ve seen Hank many times and I’m never disappointed with his shows. I wish we would have had more time to talk with him during the Meet n Greet, but I understand where they’re coming from. They have a schedule to keep. At least I did get to meet him and shake his hand.

Hank puts on an awesome show. Very up beat. Never a dull moment.Hank's band is also top notch. Will definitely see Hank again.

The AVA amphitheater is a very nice pavillion. We had awesome seats. So close to the stage.

Lousy concert. The venue was great, but the sound team was terrible. Hank has a strong voice. But, between the band and poor mixing this proved to be a marginal concert. Too bad because Hank is a legend.....

Hank puts on a really great show. We had an awesome time. One thing he does is change the words to songs you think you know to satisfy the location he is at. A really great performance.

Hank Williams Jr. Plots a ‘Family Tradition’ 45th Anniversary Tour

Hank Williams Jr. has big plans to hit the road in 2024. On Monday (Dec. 4), the singer announced a tour celebrating the 45th anniversary of his landmark 1979 album, Family Tradition .

Family Tradition , which includes the country classic title track as well as several other staples of Williams Jr.'s career, came out on April 17, 1979.

His new tour kicks off early in April, just before the album officially turns 45 years old, with a stop in Birmingham, Ala. It'll continue with stops in various U.S. cities, tallying up 13 shows in total before the run wraps in September.

A variety of opening acts are joining Ol' Bocephus on the road this summer. Among them is Old Crow Medicine Show, the group that joined him on his 2023 dates. Williams Jr. has selected a variety of other outlaw-minded artists to perform on the bill, too, including Marty Stuar t, Whiskey Myers , Charley Crockett, Neal McCoy and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band .

Tickets to the next slate of shows go on sale (with some exceptions) on Friday, Dec. 15. However, fan club members will be able to snag their tickets a week-and-a-half earlier, thanks to a special presale that begins Wednesday (Dec. 6). For details, visit the singer's website .

About Hank Williams Jr.

Hank Williams Jr.’s extremely impressive resume has spawned 70 million albums sold worldwide, six RIAA-certified Platinum albums, 20 RIAA Gold-certified, 13 No. 1 albums and 10 No. 1 singles. Marking 52 years since his first album in 1964, Williams Jr. released It’s About Time (Nash Icon Records) in 2016. In addition to the history-making “Are You Ready for the Country,” the project included tunes such as “Dress Like an Icon,” “Just Call Me Hank,” “It’s About Time” and “The Party’s On” as well as re-recorded versions of classics “Mental Revenge” and “Born to Boogie” with Brantley Gilbert, Justin Moore and Brad Paisley on guitar. It’s About Time marked Hank’s 37th studio album in his five-decade career. Following It’s About Time, Williams Jr. has released several compilations, including All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over: Great Tailgating Songs, A Country Boy Can Survive (Box Set), Hank Jr. Sings Hank Sr. and 35 Biggest Hits.

In 2022 Hank Jr. continued to redefine the boundaries of rock and country music with the genre- crossing, chart-topping release of his most recent album, Rich White Honky Blues. Debuting at No. 1 on the Current Country, Americana/Folk and Blues Albums charts, the project was a successful collaboration between Williams and GRAMMY-winning Producer, Dan Auerbach. The 12-song-set was recorded live, reprising classics from Robert Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins, R.L. Burnside, Muddy Waters, and more, delivering reinvigorated classic blues sounds infused with Williams’ signature rock and country flavor.

He continues to add accolades to an extremely impressive resume, which includes ACM Entertainer of the Year, CMA Entertainer of the Year and BMI Icon, in addition to a GRAMMY win and coveted inductions into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and Country Music Hall of Fame. As a touring artist, Hank Jr. was a pioneer in bringing arena rock production values to country music, and he remains one of the most consistent ticket sellers in music, period, as generation after generation gets turned on to one of the most dynamic live performers ever to take the stage

Hank Williams Jr. Announces 2023 Headlining Tour, Joined By Old Crow Medicine Show

hank jr tour history

Hank Williams Jr. continues to prove that he is still as good as he once was.

Last June, ol’ Bocephus dropped his highly anticipated blues album,  Rich White Honky Tonk Blues, his first project in five years. It was awesome to see the country music legend come back strong, after the passing of his wife Mary Jane last March at the age of 58.

And now, it appears that Hank Jr. is ready kick off 2023 with a bang, as he just announced his upcoming headlining concert, Hank Williams Jr. Live In Concert.

And on top of that, Old Crow Medicine Show will be hitting the road as well as his opener.

He made the announcement via social media, sharing:

“Bocephus is hitting the road this year and bringing along some new rowdy friends. Join me, Old Crow Medicine Show, and a few more friends this spring and summer. Pre-sale starts tomorrow, stay tuned for details.”

The tour kicks off on May 12th in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and rounds out on August 26th in Gilford, New Hampshire, for a total of 15 stops in 2023.

Needless to say, this is one you’re not gonna wanna miss, so check out Hank Jr.’s list of stops in 2023 to see if he’s coming to a city near you:

Hank Jr. speaks his mind in Sparks, breaks in new venue

Hank Williams Jr.

“If you don’t like Hank Williams, you can kiss my ass.”

With those words — actually from a song written by Kris Kristofferson, one of Bocephus’ few still-living rowdy friends — Hank Williams Jr. brought an epic concert to a close Saturday night at the Nugget Events Center, the new 8,500-seat amphitheater in downtown Sparks.

It was obvious that being Hank Jr. is a pretty good gig these days, and he’s damn glad to still be doing it. Seventy years old and 62 years into this performing business (he was 8 when his mother first sent him onto a stage to sing his daddy’s songs in front of an audience), he still has all of the onstage charisma, musical chops and personality to take any group of fans down a Lost Highway of country-rock entertainment they’re just not going to get anywhere else these days.

And boy, is he ever unafraid to speak his mind.

He complained about the sound of his acoustic guitar, scolded kneeling NFL players, dropped an f-bomb or two when his guitar rig quit working early in the set and, at one point, stopped his band and re-counted “one, two, three, four” before telling them not to screw up his “damn song.”

And he never stopped smiling the entire time. Not from the moment he walked onstage in black pants, a black shirt and a black ball cap with the word “ICON” written on it — seemingly the most relaxed man in the place, as if he were welcoming 8,500 of his closest rowdy friends into his living room for a night of family entertainment.

Williams wore a lot of hats this evening, both literally and figuratively, and his still-feverish fan base ate up every bit of it.

He switched headgear often, going from his ball cap to a big cowboy hat and then an authentic 1951 Hank Williams Stetson (try to find one of those on the rack) and back to the ball cap. And, in what has long since become a tradition at his shows, he switched instruments almost as often as he switched hats.

The first half of the show was driven by Hank’s electric guitar. He pulled out a fiddle for “Kaw-Liga” (one of four Hank Sr. songs on the set list), got behind the piano for some boogie-woogie takes on “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and then, in probably the highlight of the evening, sat solo at center stage with an acoustic guitar for a medley of songs made famous by him, his father, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings — only to pull out an electric guitar again to cover riffs made famous by Ted Nugent and Joe Perry.

That’s a whole lot of musical styles and generations in one sentence. But for Williams, that’s just another night on the road.

The fact that Hank Jr. (in his words) plays “where he wants, when he wants and for who he wants” says a whole lot about the level of joy and satisfaction he gets from his job these days, which is a far cry from the hellish situation he found himself in 50 years ago.

Nicknamed “Bocephus” by his father in honor of a ventriloquist dummy from the Grand Ole Opry, Hank was shoved onstage as an 8-year-old boy by his mother, Audrey, keeping the family coffers full by singing his daddy’s songs (backed by the original Drifting Cowboys band) to a nation of Hank Sr. fans eager to keep the music alive by any means necessary. That went on for most of the next decade; in interviews since, he’s noted that job was “a lot of fun for a boy, but hell for a man.”

By the time Hank Jr. started working his own songs into the set, the reaction was often several hundred people leaving the theater at the same time. They didn’t want to hear his songs. They were there to hear Hank Sr.

So, you couldn’t blame him if at some point he said to hell with those songs and just kept forging his own path — which, thanks to a string of platinum albums and singles in the 1970s and 1980s that rivals just about anything in the history of the genre, would be completely understandable.

But he didn’t. In time he again embraced those songs (often re-inventing them in a southern rock style) and positively celebrates their legacy right along with his own.

And besides, it’s  his  songs that people come to hear these days. In strong voice throughout, he gave his fans plenty of them Saturday, everything from “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound” to “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” and “Family Tradition” to “All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)” — noting with a bit of sadness that Cash, Jennings and most of his rowdy friends have long since departed.

Hank Williams Jr.

Fortunately for Hank Jr., he’s always got plenty of rowdy friends waiting to meet him on the road. This capacity crowd was definitely on the rowdy side, with most people standing on their feet, singing along and dancing for a majority of the show. Beer sales, we must note, quite possibly set a record that may stand for a while at this sparkling new venue.

The fans actually got their money’s worth for this one before Williams even took the stage. The opening act, Hannah Dasher, aptly described herself as a “rock and roll Dolly Parton” and quickly went about proving herself correct. Her high-energy down-home country songs (including one called “I’m Going To Kick Your Redneck Ass”) struck a chord with a crowd that was well-oiled and ready for some redneck ass kicking even before she took the stage. (It was a busy afternoon for the bars on Victorian Avenue.)

Dasher even looked like a rock-and-roll Dolly Parton (you can fill in the blanks), albeit with dark hair, and paid homage to her by covering “Nine To Five,” a slightly rocked-up version that compared quite well to the original.

After her set, she walked into the crowd, mingled with the fans and posed for pictures with anybody who asked. She did a nice job keeping the crowd entertained while waiting for Hank Jr. to complete his meet-and-greet and finally get on the stage.

And as Hank Jr. himself would be the first to say, it’s not easy being on stage when the people are there to see a man named Hank Williams.
