The curving Saigon River has long played an important role as the area grew from a small fishing village into a significant seaport. The river is still used today as a hub to transport goods. Although traffic buzzes along the busy boulevard that runs parallel to it, the riverside is a place to go in Ho Chi Minh City to escape the crowds.

Many historic French colonial buildings line the waterfront – such as the 1887 Customs Building and the opulent Majestic Hotel. A little further north – at the Me Linh roundabout – there is a statue dedicated to Tran Hung Dao (a national hero of the 13th century) and the Bach Dang Harbor, where Saigon Riverboat tours depart.

Walk north along the riverside a short distance, then retrace your steps to Nguyen Hue Street.

#4 Nguyen Hue Walking Street

The Café Apartments, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Running a half-mile from the Saigon River to the Ho Chi Minh City Hall Building, Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street is one of the most famous boulevards in the city. Lined with boutique shops, chic cafes and high-end retailers, the street is a popular place to take a stroll both day and night.

The Café Apartments

One of the most interesting buildings along the boulevard is the Café Apartments at #42. The 1960s block apartment building has housed US military officers, shipyard workers and, now, cafes. Each café has its own theme and vibe, so visitors can explore until they find the perfect spot for a coffee with a view.

Walk northwest to Le Loi Street – about a block before the street ends at the HCMC City Hall building. Turn right (northeast) and walk one block to the Opera House.

#5 HCMC Opera House (Municipal Theater)

Opera House, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Built in 1897, the Opera House is one of the best sights in Ho Chi Minh City from the French colonial period. The 500-seat theater is still used for performances today. Flanking the Opera House are two famous HCMC hotels.

The Caravelle Hotel, on the south, opened in 1959. In addition to once housing the Australian and New Zealand Embassies – as well as top news outlets – the hotel was frequented by journalists covering the Vietnam War. The Hotel Continental, on the north side of the Opera House, was built in 1880 as a luxury hotel and was a popular social and political gather spot during the French Colonial era.

Retrace your steps on Le Loi Street back to Nguyen Hue Street. Walk to the center pedestrian zone and take in the next two sight: The Rex Hotel and the Ho Chi Minh Statue.

#6 Rex Hotel HCMC

Home Of The 5 O'Clock Follies, Rex Hotel, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

The famous Rex Hotel was built in the 1920s as a car dealership, but was transformed in the 1960s into a hotel. American troops were the first guests of the Rex Hotel (but only while their camp was being established) and the rooftop bar became a favorite watering hole for US military officials. The Rex Hotel was used for daily press briefings by the US military command, which came to be better known as the Five O’Clock Follies.

#7 Ho Chi Minh Statue

Standing in the center of the wide pedestrian zone in front of City Hall is a 24-foot-tall statue of a waving President Ho Chi Minh. Placed on the square in 2015, it is the second Ho Chi Minh Statue to stand on the spot. The current statue was under refurbishment during our visit.

Walk behind the statue to the City Hall building.

#8 Ho Chi Minh City Hall

Classic Architecture, City Hall, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

The exquisite and striking French colonial HCMC City Hall building was constructed in the early 1900s as a hotel – and was designed to resemble the Hotel de Ville in Paris . Adorned with columns and bas-reliefs, the landmark building now serves as the main office of government, Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.

Pro Tip : At night, the building is bathed in lights, which makes it a particularly stunning sight.

Walk to the northeast end of City Hall to Dong Khoi Street (the same street that the Opera House is on) and turn left (northwest) and walk to the HCMC Cathedral.

#9 Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon

Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Constructed in the late 1800s, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception (as it is formally called) is another remarkable vestige of the French Colonial times. The HCMC Notre Dame Cathedral was built entirely from French imported materials and, although it has undergone significant renovations, it has retained it original splendor. The double bell towers – each topped with a cross – rise to the height of 200 feet.

Pro Tip : Don’t miss the Our Lady of Peace statue that stands in the garden in front of the church. In 2005, people claim to have witnessed a tear fall down the statue’s right cheek and visitors still check today to see if the statue is crying.

Next to the Saigon Cathedral – to the east – is the yellow Ho Chi Minh City Post Office.

#10 Saigon Central Post Office

Central Post Office, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

The main HCMC Post Office is another French colonial era structure built in the late 1800s – and it is one of Ho Chi Minh City’s top attractions. The elegant and ornate building features a bright yellow façade with green shutters and the interior domed hall is reminiscent of an old European train station. The building still functions as the main post office – and they sell postcards on-site for visitors to mail home an inexpensive souvenir.

Walk to the pedestrian street on the northwest side of the post office.

#11 Nguyen Van Binh Book Street

People reading and drinking coffee on Book Street, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

A unique HCMC street, Nguyen Van Binh is better known as Book Street. The short 150-meter-long lane is lined with bookshops, magazine kiosks, open-air cafes and literary memorabilia and statues.

Walk northwest to the back of the Cathedral and turn left (southwest) and walk to the front gates of Independence Palace.

#12 Independence Palace (Reunification Hall HCMC)

Independence Palace from the front, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

An iconic building with a storied past, Independence Palace is the most popular Ho Chi Minh City attraction. The Norodom Palace was the first structure on the site. From the 1870s until 1962, it served as the residence and office of numerous officials (including the French Governor of Cochinchina, Japanese officials, the Prime Minister of the State of Vietnam and by President Ngo Dinh Diem of the Republic of Vietnam).

During a 1962 assassination attempt on President Diem, the Norodom Palace was bombed beyond repair (although the president escaped). A modern design concept was used to construct the new Independence Palace and it took four years to complete (during which time the president was killed). Upon completion, General Nguyen Van Thieu, the last president of South Vietnam, used the palace as his home and office – until he fled the country in 1975.

Famous Tank 390 at Independence Palace, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

In late April 1975, during the Fall of Saigon (or the Liberation of Saigon, depending on which side is telling the story), the North Vietnamese overtook the city. As the final act to ending the war, they drove a tank through the front gates of Independence Palace and raised a People’s Army of Vietnam flag from the building.

After the war, the palace was renamed Reunification Hall. Today, it is open to visitors (ticket required) who are interested in learning more about the history of the palace and its significance during the Vietnam War.

This concludes our Highlights of Ho Chi Minh City Walking Tour! However, there are more nearby Ho Chi Minh City attractions for visitors who want to continue their sightseeing adventure.

Turtle Lake, HCMC, Saigon, Vietnam

Parks and green space are a welcome sanctuary in the congested and polluted city. Our favorite city park is Tao Dan Park, which is located behind Independence Palace. The park features walking trails, playgrounds, and manicured gardens. Another nearby park is September 23rd Park; although it is not as natural as Tao Dan, there are towering trees that create a nice shaded place to relax and cool down. Turtle Lake Park sits in the middle of a roundabout surrounded by cafes and features a pond with benches (but no turtles).

Ho Chi Minh Free Walking Tour: What You Will Need

walking the crazy Streets of Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Visitors who use our Ho Chi Minh City Free Walking Tour don’t need much – but having the following items will make for a more pleasant walk.

Comfortable Shoes

Anyone attempting a walking tour in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam needs comfortable travel shoes ! Sidewalks are often cracked – or simply non-existent – but relatively flat. We completed our tour of Ho Chi Minh City sights wearing flip flops , but other travelers may want to wear proper walking shoes .

Vietnam Weather Gear

The weather in HCMC can be hot and humid – or rainy and wet. Be prepared for the elements by wearing skin-protecting sunscreen and a wide-brimmed travel hat . In the case of rain, bring along a lightweight raincoat or travel umbrella . And, don’t forget the insect repellent !

Anti-Theft Bag for Vietnam

Petty theft is an unfortunate part of HCMC. I (Sarah) carry a Timbuk2 Messenger Bag , which has numerous interior zippered pockets where I can safely keep my everyday travel items . Protect your valuables by using a specifically designed anti-theft travel bag – like the stylish bags by Travelon .

Pro Tip: Some visitors have reported phones being snatched right out of their hands – and tourists who take pictures with their phone camera are an easy target. Rather than risk having your phone stolen, we recommend taking photos with a pocket-sized camera that has a wrist strap – like the Canon Powershot . We also toured HCMC using our go-to travel camera , the DSLR Canon Rebel , but kept it tucked away while walking.

Ho Chi Minh City Tourist Map, WiFi and Trip Planner

Although we provided an online Ho Chi Minh City Center Map of Sights, we think it is beneficial to have a paper map, too. Navigating is much easier and more relaxed when you understand the layout of the city. We recommend buying a HCMC Map – like this one  – before your trip. Staying connected during your HCMC visit is essential; find out why we carry a personal WiFi Hotspot at all times!

From gazing at temple architecture to joining in with local activities, here are the top free things to do in Ho Chi Minh City © Elizaveta Galitckaia / Shutterstock

Bustling Ho Chi Minh City is one of Southeast Asia’s top value destinations, where you can gobble down a street-side bowl of pho for a couple of bucks.

For those traveling on an even tighter budget, there are plenty of free things to do too. From lively street performers to a family-friendly mini waterpark, these top free activities will keep you busy in HCMC.

Admire the interior of the Central Post Office

With a neo-Baroque facade and a science-themed interior, the functioning Central Post Office dates back to the late 1800s. Check out the vintage maps painted on the concourse walls and the impressive tiled floor.

Enjoy the views over Ben Thanh Market

Opened just before WWI, Ben Thanh Market , in one of the city's liveliest neighborhoods, pretty much sells anything you could ever want. Brave the gauntlet of sellers and make your way through the market’s narrow aisles to a hidden staircase near the South Gate. Take it up to a small temple where vendors pray for a good day’s business and enjoy the views over the market.

A large building exterior at night. Each balcony is lit up in neon

Take an evening stroll along Nguyen Hue Walking Street

This pedestrian-only street gets busy on weekend evenings with street performers and families out for a walk. Don’t miss exploring the apartment building at #42, an Instagram hot spot, chock full of boutiques and trendy cafes.

Go on a free student-led walking tour

While hardly anyone walks anywhere in humid Ho Chi Minh City, the free walking tours at  Saigon Free Day Tours is run by enthusiastic university students. It's a great way to see the city up close.

Splash about at Vivo Playground

The kids will enjoy cooling off from the heat with a romp through the mini waterpark at the Vivo Playground atop the SC VivoCity Mall just south of downtown.

A woman stands facing a huge red-brick cathedral building with two twin towers

Gaze up at the spires of Notre Dame Cathedral

Modeled after its Parisian namesake, the Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral is a red-brick, neo-Romanesque church with twin bell towers and spires that reach 60m (197ft) into the sky. Inside, you can admire its stained-glass windows and walls inlaid with devotional tablets.

Take photos at Ho Thi Ky Flower Market

Saigon’s largest flower market (52 Ho Thi Ky, District 10) is open 24/7, peaking in the early morning hours. It's a favorite backdrop for colorful photographs.

People in prayer at Cao Dai Temple, Ho Chi Minh City

Visit Cao Dai Temple

Adherents of Caodaism, a religion founded in Vietnam incorporating elements from Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Christianity, come to worship at the colorful three-story Cao Dai Temple . Head up the stairs (then to the left for women, right for men) to view the main hall.

Play shuttlecock at September 23 Park

Join one of the many groups kicking around a shuttlecock at this park just along the main backpacker area of Pham Ngu Lao. This popular Vietnamese pastime, called đá câu, is like badminton for the feet, but keeping the mass of plastic discs and feathers in the air is deceptively hard.

Courtyard in front of the entrance to the Ton Duc Thang Museum

Learn about Ho Chi Minh's successor at Ton Duc Thang Museum

Celebrating the life of Vietnam’s first president after reunification, the Ton Duc Thang Museum provides interesting insights into Vietnam in the 1960s and '70s.

Meet English-speaking locals with Mundo Lingo

Mundo Lingo is a great way to meet English-speaking locals and other social polyglots. While weekly meetups are typically held at a local bar, there’s no obligation to buy a drink. Just slap on stickers of flags representing the languages you speak and get chatting!

A golden Buddha statue inside the colourful Chantaransey Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh City

See murals of the Buddha's life at Chantarangsay Pagoda

Serving HCMC’s Khmer community, the  Chantarangsay Pagoda 's main shrine has 14 Buddha statues with vivid colorful paintings of scenes from the life of the Buddha painted all over the ceiling and walls.

Look for shophouse outlines on Dong Khoi Street

Great for window shopping, Dong Khoi is Saigon’s premier shopping street full of international and Vietnamese boutiques. If you look hard enough, you’ll be able to see the outlines of the shophouses that once lined this canal leading to the Saigon River. For some free air-conditioning, head through the art arcade and up the stairs to the right to Couleurs d’Asie to view some fine-art photography depicting Vietnam’s ethnic minority groups by French photographer Réhahn.

Scooter traffic passes the Binh Tay Market in Ho Chi Minh City

Take a wander through Binh Tay Market

The Binh Tay Market just outside of Chinatown is the city’s largest wholesale market, with a great clock tower and a central courtyard with gardens. It’s also noted for its Chinese-inspired architectural elements, including dragons and phoenixes on the roof.

Listen to birdsong at Tao Dan Park

Known as the Jardin de la Ville when it was founded in 1868, the 10-hectare Tao Dan Park right in the middle of the city is home to a temple, flower garden and sculpture exhibition. Song-bird lovers also congregate in the early mornings where their feathered friends can learn new songs from each other.

Green rice fields, with buildings in the background on the island of Thanh Da, Ho Chi Minh City

Enjoy the green space of Thanh Da

Stroll the narrow paths on this lightly developed peninsula known as "the green lung of Saigon" for its rice paddies and fishing ponds just 15 minutes from downtown. Binh Quoi Tourist Village at the very end of the main street of Binh Quoi is set up to resemble a typical village in the Mekong Delta .

Listen to a free performance outside Saigon Opera House

While the only way to see the inside of the  Saigon Opera House (inaugurated in 1900) is to buy a ticket to a performance, come at 8am on a Sunday to catch a free live musical performance on the steps. Arrive early and snag one of the few plastic chairs, or do as the locals do and catch the hour-long performance from the seat of your motorbike.

750*350

Ho Chi Minh Walking Tour Route

This walking tour starts from Ho Chi Minh Square in the centre of Saigon city. There are many places to stay nearby *, ranging from cheap to luxurious. There are also many cafes and restaurants all the way along this walking tour if you want a drink or a bite to eat.

1. Ho Chi Minh Square

Ho Chi Minh Square, the start of a walking tour through the city

Ho Chi Minh Square * is a historic square and rather peaceful area in the middle of the busy city. It’s the main central square of the city and is especially lovely in the evening. One side of the square is dominated by the huge People’s Committee Building, a French colonial city hall from the 1900s. The rest of the square is lined by the grand Rex Hotel * and several upmarket shops and restaurants. There’s also some greenery, fountains and a statue of Ho Chi Minh in the square.

Directions: Head a short distance down Nguyen Hue Street (where you’ll return later) and take the first left to the opera house.

2. Saigon Opera House

Saigon Opera House, a stop on a walking tour of Ho Chi Minh City

The Saigon Opera House * is an iconic building in the French colonial style. Concerts, operas and acrobatics shows still go on here. There’s a very popular Vietnamese Bamboo Circus called the À Ố Show that takes place here several evenings per week. Through acting and acrobatics, it tells the story of how southern Vietnam transitioned from a peaceful backwater to a booming metropolis. Get tickets in advance *.

Directions: Turn left in front of the opera house on Dong Khoi Street.

3. Dong Khoi Street

Hotel Continental Saigon

Dong Khoi Street is a great street to walk down. It’s famous from the novel The Quiet American * by Graham Greene, when it was called the Rue Catinat. Despite the name change, it’s still lined by elegant French buildings, colonial-era hotels such as the Hotel Continental * from the novel, and high-end boutiques. The Hotel Continental is actually the oldest hotel in Vietnam, from 1880, and named after the one in Paris. In both the First Indochina War during the Colonial Period and the later Vietnam War, this hotel was a meeting place for journalists and politicians.

Directions: Continue up the street until you reach the cathedral square.

4. Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral

Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral

Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral * is a wonderful old church built by the French. It looks a very little bit like Notre Dame in Paris, but made from bricks instead of stone. It feels quite large inside, with a high ceiling and nice stained-glass windows. The construction materials for this iconic cathedral were brought over all the way from France!

Directions: To the right is the grand post office building.

5. Central Post Office

Central post office, a stop on a walking tour of Ho Chi Minh City

The Central Post Office * is in a large, elegant old French colonial building. There are marble floors, high arched ceilings, and it’s still a functioning post office inside! There are also several souvenir shops.

Extension to the History Museum and Jade Emporer Pagoda

If you have the energy, you can extend this walking tour of Ho Chi Minh City by also visiting the History Museum and Jade Emporer Pagoda ( see below ). Alternatively, you can take a taxi to these sights.

Directions: Turn right up the street past the post office, known as Ho Chi Minh City Book Street. It’s an interesting street to wander along, absolutely full of booksellers. At the end, turn left and left again. Then take the first right to the turtle roundabout. Turn left from here and you’ll reach the museum.

6. War Remnants Museum

War Remnants Museum, a stop on the Ho Chi Minh City Walking Tour

Key Information: Open every day 7:30am to 5:30pm. Tickets cost 40,000 VND per person. Spend 1-3 hours here.

The War Remnants Museum ( Website , Tripadvisor Reviews *) is one of the top attractions in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s well organised and there’s plenty of English, you’ll learn a lot about the Vietnam War. It’s perhaps biased against the Americans, but the museums of many countries tend to be a little biased. There are some rather graphic images which are not suitable for younger children. On the grounds, there are many tanks and planes. Overall, it’s very moving and a must-see when in Ho Chi Minh City.

Directions: Head to the large park area of the Independence Palace and left to reach the entrance.

More Optional Sights to Visit in Saigon

If you aren’t too pressed for time, you should also check out a large pagoda complex, a lovely park and an interesting Hindu temple:

Xa Loi Pagoda is a Buddhist Temple with a tall pagoda, temples and several large statues within a peaceful complex.

Tao Dan Park is a pleasant green area with large trees and several interesting sculptures.

Mariamman Hindu Temple is a lovely temple from the 19th century, dedicated to the goddess of weather, Mariamman. You can go inside (take your shoes off) and look around – there are several explanations in English around the walls describing all the little statues.

7. Independence Palace

Independence Palace in Saigon

Key Information: Open 8 am–3:30 pm every day. Tickets are 40,000/10,000 or 65,000/15,000 VND per adult/child without or with the additional exhibition. Optional audio guide. Spend 1.5-3 hours here.

The Independence Palace ( Website , Tripadvisor Reviews *) is a large palace complex. There are often also exhibitions on the grounds to do with Vietnamese independence and history – ask where they are as they can be difficult to find. You may be too tired after walking around the large palace to cope with visiting the exhibition as well.

Within the palace, there are several floors, from the underground bunkers to a lavish bar-type area on the top floor. It’s generally quite 60’s inside, so a bit of a time warp, and some rooms are very over the top. There are information boards to read in every room, but get the audio guide if you want additional information.

Directions: Head to the exit and turn right. The food market is on your left.

8. Ben Nghe Street Food Market

As its name suggests, Ben Nghe Street Food Market * is a market selling street food. It’s quite small but there’s a wide variety of choice. Although not the most authentic market and slightly overpriced, the food’s good, it’s clean and there are cooling ceiling fans.

Directions: Continue down the road and at the second junction you’ll see the museum complex on your left.

9. Ho Chi Minh City Museum

A colonial building in Vietnam

Key Information: Open Tue-Sun, 8-11:30am and 1-5:30pm. Tickets are 30,000VND per person.

The Ho Chi Minh City Museum ( Website , Tripadvisor Reviews *) is in a nice neoclassical building, but the exhibits are a bit random and not too informative with a few highlights as exceptions. There is a fun bunker – it’s slightly hard to find but just keep heading downwards! The similarly named History Museum of Ho Chi Minh City, near the Botanic Gardens and Zoo, is much better.

Directions: Turn right, left and right again to wind your way through the streets to the bustling market.

10. Ben Thanh Market

Ben Thanh Market, a stop on a walking tour of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Ben Thanh Market * is a huge market in the middle of Ho Chi Minh City selling a wide variety of goods. You can buy food, souvenirs, clothes and coffee, and much more in between. It can be busy, and you might get slightly pestered to buy stuff. Haggling is expected.

Directions: Head towards the large Le Loi Boulevard and continue to the large pedestrianised street.

11. Nguyen Hue Walking Street

Nguyen Walking Street on a tour of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Nguyen Hue Walking Street is a broad street with a narrow park running its length. It’s pedestrianized, so a great street to walk down. Iconic skyscrapers and posh shops line the street, but nighttime is when it really comes alive with the city lights and street food stands.

Directions: As you walk down the street, you can’t miss the iconic Bitexco Tower on the right. Head here for great views over the city.

12. Bitexco Tower Viewing Deck

Key Information: Open every day 09:30-21:30.

From the top of the striking Bitexco Financial Tower, you have great views over the entire city of Saigon. Get tickets to the viewing deck ! You can see all the new skyscrapers, as well as the older buildings such as the opera house and the river. Don’t go on hazy days, the best time of day to visit is when the sunsets around 5-6 pm and all the city lights come on.

Directions: Head back to the main street and to the waterfront.

13. Saigon Riverfront

Strolling along Saigon Riverfront

Take a leisurely stroll along the Saigon River promenade and enjoy the city’s skyline. You can also take a boat cruise from here, particularly popular are the evening boat cruises with dinner *.

Directions: This is the end of the Ho Chi Minh Walking Tour. Read on to discover more attractions, the best day trips from the city , or the best evening activities .

Further Afield Attractions in Saigon

These sights in Ho Chi Minh City are slightly further from the centre. You can walk to the first two, but to get to Giac Lam Pagoda or Cholon you’ll need to take a taxi or catch a bus.

Jade Emperor Pagoda

Jade Emperor Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

The Jade Emperor Pagoda * is one of the most significant temples in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a Taoist temple built in 1909 to honour the supreme Taoist god, i.e. the Jade Emperor. Inside there are slightly eerie large paper mache statues, lots of incense, Buddhist elements, lots of colour and lovely architecture.

History Museum of Ho Chi Minh City

History Museum of Ho Chi Minh City

The Vietnamese National Museum of History ( Website , Tripadvisor Reviews *) is a well-laid-out museum where you can learn about the history of the country. It goes from the Bronze Age, through the Nguyen dynasty and almost up to the present day. There are many artefacts, sculptures and helpful English explanations which really bring history to life. Watch out for the opening times – they do make you leave at 11:30am before reopening again at 1pm.

Giac Lam Pagoda

Giac Lam Pagoda, Vietnam

Giac Lam Pagoda * is the largest and one of the oldest pagodas in Saigon. In the large, peaceful complex you’ll find elaborate tombs, huge rare trees and other religious buildings and statues.

Best Day Trips from Ho Chi Minh City

The two best day trips from Ho Chi Minh City are to explore the Mekong Delta * or visit the Cu Chi Tunnels *. These places can be visited independently, but it’s much easier and saves time to visit on a guided tour. If you are pressed for time, you can take a one-day tour that explores both the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels *.

The Mekong Delta is about two-hour’s drive away but has a completely different atmosphere. It’s very rural, and famous for its watery world of floating markets, rice paddies and rivers. The Cu Chi Tunnels are closer, one hour away, and are a section of interconnecting tunnels built by the Viet Cong during the Vietnamese War to shelter from and evade the Americans. On the tour, you can explore the tunnels, though some are not for the claustrophobic!

Best Evening Activities in Ho Chi Minh City

Riverfront stroll in Saigon in the evening.

There are plenty of things to do in the evening in Ho Chi Minh City, from theatre to pubs and clubs, to viewing decks and river cruises.

  • Check out the À Ố Show *, a very popular Vietnamese Bamboo Circus. Through acting and acrobatics, it tells the story of how southern Vietnam transitioned from a peaceful backwater to a booming metropolis.
  • See the Golden Water Puppet Show *. Water Puppets are a traditional form of Vietnamese theatre, and this show is both informative and entertaining. The show is every evening at 6:30pm and lasts around 45 minutes.
  • An Evening Street Food Tour * is a great way to sample the local cuisine. Alternatively, head to Ben Nghe Street Food Market, which is open till 1am.
  • Bitexco Tower Viewing Deck * is an iconic skyscraper and sunset is the best time to visit the viewing deck for great views.
  • Landmark 81 is the newest, tallest skyscraper in town, though it’s slightly out of the town centre. It’s designed to look a bit like a stick of bamboo, with fabulous views from the top. Get tickets to the sky deck! *
  • Saigon River Dinner Cruise *: Cruise along the Saigon River for a few hours, past the lit-up waterfront, while enjoying a 3,4, or 5-course meal.
  • Hit Pham Ngo Lao and Bui Vien Backpacker Streets are the top nightspots in Ho Chi Minh City, with bars and nightclubs blasting out music of all kinds. Warning – it’s loud!
  • For a calmer, perhaps more sophisticated night, head to Nguyen Hue walking street. Here you’ll find fancy rooftop bars , stylish cafes and plenty of street food. The street is closed to traffic at nighttime on weekends. You’ll find many street food stalls and even live music performances.
