How House of Honey Reinvented Feminine Glamor in Los Angeles

Yes, there are custom disco balls.

Every item on this page was hand-picked by a House Beautiful editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

As is, undoubtedly, customary when designing any Los Angeles home, settling on the vibe was the first step. "We established what we perceived to be the energy of the house and our client," Honey explains. The resulting mood boards, fabric selections, and color palettes leaned feminine, elegant, contemporary, and comfortable. "We are fans of opulence and feminine glamor and ran with Old Hollywood allure as inspiration for this project," Honey explains. "We called upon a number of our favorite local makers and artists to help bring our vision to life."

That vision involved dual-toned velvet sofas, neon artworks, and a collection of disco balls that make the four-bedroom home feel like a party-ready haven. describing her client, Honey says, "She has a chic and polished point of view referencing Alexander McQueen and Jean Harlow as style influences and is clearly confident and not afraid to take risks." Those risks translated to custom marble cabinet pulls, a globe pendant designed to look like a necklace, and old-school coffered ceilings. Such elements work well with the pre-existing details that provided an opportunity for the bolder pieces to shine. Honey notes, "the home featured clean, simple lines that made for the perfect blank canvas," from the marbled bathroom that evokes luxurious European spas to the pale, wide-plank floors.

The goal was nothing less than for the home to evoke a feeling of instant happiness every time its owner walks into it. "We wanted to create a festive warmth that immediately evokes a sense of holiday and reflects our client’s sense of humor, chic style, and relaxed vibe," Honey says. "Overall, the project was pretty dreamy."

Living Room

a living room with a fireplace

"This space was inspired by boutique hotel lobbies," Honey notes. "We wanted to set the tone here with the feminine and sexy neon artwork by Austin England , the scalloped leather tiles, and intimate seating in front of the fireplace." Swivel chairs: Stahl + Band , in custom Maharam fabric. Side tables: Jayson Home . Leather tiles: Avo Avo .

a group of gold balls

Instead of a traditional sculpture, Honey opted for her own set of custom disco balls.

Pictured above.

Honey says, "The den is the heart of the house and we love knowing it is serving its purpose as the perfect host for copious gatherings—spontaneous and planned." Sofa A+R . Coffee table: vintage, Chairish . Lounge chair: Atelier de Troupe .

a kitchen with white cabinets

"There are stunning Dolce Vita slabs on the countertops and backsplash and a gorgeous custom-sized island pendant by Jason Koharik that took three days to install," Honey says. Stools Twentieth , in Thomas Lavin fabric.

a white cabinet with scalloped pulls

The star of the space, Honey says, is "the custom, one-of-a-kind marble mis-matched cabinet hardware that’s made from the remnants of the fireplace on the roof deck."

Dining Room

a dining room with a table and chairs

Like plenty of formal dining rooms, this one is meant to be enjoyed during more than just mealtime. "This space is used more for game night than formal dinner parties" Honey explains. "We love that it feels sophisticated without being fussy." Table Pieces . Pendant: Trueing . Credenza CAM Design Co .

bedroom

Honey had a specific goal in mind for this space: "The balcony lets in a ton of light and we wanted the room to feel as if its always golden hour—no matter what time of day it is." Bed : RH . Lounge chair : Kelly Wearstler . Table lamp : Eny Lee Parker .

a room with a table and a chair and a picture on the wall

"Pink lacquered walls serve as a beautiful backdrop for the client's original Horst P. Horst photograph, which was a gift from her grandfather," Honey says. The Cuff Studio desk also works double-duty, as her WFH setup and a place to get ready for big nights out. Honey adds, "This room was designed with her glam squad in mind and the need for a proper area to get ready for those special red carpet events."

bathroom with marble floors and wall

Like the kitchen, the bathroom highlights the home's unique use of marble. As for the details, Honey turned to Jason Koharik , whose sconces and cabinet hardware are easy eye-catchers in the space.

Poolside Patio

a pool with quirky floats in it

The pre-existing pool is almost covered in FUNBOY 's cleverly designed floats.

roof deck

The rooftop deck was not originally part of Honey's scope, but after she and the client began working together, redoing the space became a must. The deck is now a cozy place to enjoy the sunrise or sunset Sofas Dedon . Chair Toogood .

House Beautiful: Did you encounter any memorable hiccups, challenges, or surprises during the project?

Tamara Honey: There was a big pause during the pandemic, and we had many opportunities to pivot in response to materials sourcing issues. The kitchen was not part of the original scope, but discovery of a hidden leak prompted action and we were able to turn the situation around and redesign the entire space into a more functional open floor plan that beautifully blended the interiors to the outdoor pool and cabana area. We are immensely grateful to the network of artisans and makers and their flexibility and dedication to our partnerships, which allowed us to deliver this dreamy space without a hitch.

HB: Where did the majority of the budget go?

TH: The majority of this budget was allocated to furniture, finishes, and equipment. We were focused on creating a unique and personal environment for our client, and every piece acts as a reflection or inspiration of her.

HB: Any other memorable details?

TH: The curved sides of the kitchen island were plastered and we repeated the stone on the face near the counter stools. We also painted the interior cabinets a vivid bright shade of coral as a sweet surprise hiding behind the creamy cabinet fronts. The hardware came last and was fashioned out of remnants from the rooftop fireplace inserts, each curved edge eased by hand.

Jet Set with Christina (traveling w/ kids, choosing a “forever home”, & why waiting for kids might be overrated)

On this episode, the girlies cuddle up (virtually) to the wonderful travel blogger and business woman, @jetsetchristina (aka Christina Haisfield). Niki and Caro pick her brain on the best tips got traveling with kids, including the best locations to take them, and what age is the easiest. They chat about how to pick the right place to "settle down", and why thinking of it as temporary helps you make a better decision in the long run. Christina gives the girls all the tea on how she and Kenny met, her reccomendations of the week in Charleston (will Caro move back?), and they talk all about podcasting in paradise. This one is GOOD for advice and giggles - the girls promise you won’t want to miss it.

Dealing With Crazy Mothers In Law (Horror Stories)

On this week's episode, we're discussing the highly requested topic of mothers in law. Some of you have a wonderful relationship with your MILs (good for you), however for most of you, that's not the case (and that's OK). Before getting into the crazy stories, the girlies kick it off with affordable recs of the week. Then they go through your MIL horror story submissions which are quite literally insane to put it lightly. We guarantee that no matter what your relationship with your MIL is, this episode will make you feel better about it. And at the end of the day, it's probably the husband's fault anyways, so just blame him! OK love you, enjoy!

Handling Finances In Your Marriage

In this episode Caro gets slightly vulnerable about what REALLY led to her quitting her job and how it’s actually been since doing so. Niki goes through what she’s learned so far - and one factor obviously being finances, leads the girls to finally talk about exactly how that goes down in each of their households and get transparent about what they feel like they haven’t figured out yet. Are things shared or kept separate? What is financial therapy and is it the secret ingredient we all need to do as newlyweds?! An episode full of unique perspectives and transparent feelings on work and mental health and how finances are definitely a huge component to figure out in the first years of marriages. Listen for laughs, tears and loads of unsolicited advice

Staying Sane On Family Vacations

On this week’s episode, Nicole recaps her family trip to Florida since she and Mike have the totally one of a kind unique perspective of being the only DINK couple on the vacation (double income no kids, duh). Caro has a freak-out at the mere thought of one of her younger sisters potentially having a future baby before her, and Nicole calms her down by telling her that her world is going to get better once they all grow up and are in a different stage of life together. They discuss the overall dynamics of family trips, and give life hacks for prioritizing your partner and staying sane throughout them. They do recs of the week - Caro’s is a deep and insightful article about relationships and Nicole’s is…….. pants. Then they end with a funny advice email and turn-ons of the week, and get jealous/scared of sales girls because those are the ones you have to watch out for!! Nicole runs away at the end because she has a bladder the size of a gerbil's. 3

What Are The Rules of Bachelorette Parties?

The gals love a girls trip/bachelorette party, and they’re gonna tell you exactly why. Takeaways are: don’t forget to vibe check yourself, take a moment when you need it, ride the banana boat when you see it, and sleep when you get home (it’s a marathon, ladies). Caro has decided she’s not joining the no-drinking bandwagon and Niki goes in to why the bandwagon might actually be for her. A true tale of two sides. Niki gives her non-alcoholic recs of the week and Caro gives her ultimate vacation pedicure hack. There’s no shortage of bachelorette horror stories from both the listeners and the girls to unpack this episode (caro’s mom snuck on to hers?) which lead to a boatload of ideas and tips to make this season’s bachelorettes flow as smoothly as the tequila shots will the second you touch down.

How Do Our Parents’ Divorces Affect Our Relationships?

This week's episode is about everyone's favorite topic for a relationships podcast: DIVORCE. The girlies both have the pleasure of coming from blended households with divorced parents. Caroline's been to therapy for it, and Nicole has never once confronted her feelings about the topic (shocker), so you're in for a wild ride with this one. They cry, they laugh, they get way too deep and vulnerable, and they unpack all the ways that having divorced parents can affect your marriages today. PS. can divorced dads stop being so dramatic, and actually just move into a NORMAL household after leaving the family?!

Really enjoy it, except one thing

I listen because I love Caroline and been following her since I found her on bridal tik tok and Betches days. I still really enjoy her on this!! but find Nicole to be a bit tough to listen to at times; it seems like she can’t be serious about anything and always laughing/apologizing for everything she says… it takes away from the deeper conversations and makes her come off as inauthentic and not serious about anything. The constant apologizing and having to explain herself for every opinion diminishes the quality of the conversation. I can’t really understand how she feels about a topic, as she flip flops her stance. I get it may be nervous giggling but it takes away from the sincerity and vulnerability of these topics. Keep working at it!! I’ve enjoyed the pod overall but this one thing has been very distracting as a listener!

One of my fav podcasts

Love this podcast - Nicole and Caroline have such a great dynamic and discuss such relatable issues. I look forward to listening to the episode every week!!
The one thing that irks me to my core is when they stop reading the listener email midway through and just paraphrase because they think it’s too long 💀💀💀 just read the whole thing it will probably just take just as long to paraphrase and we want the full story from the person who took the time to write it. Otherwise, I love this podcast! I am in the early years of marriage and I find this to be relatable and helpful in so many ways. Keep up the good work :)

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.
