How to clear your web browsing history.

Clearing your browsing history on iPhone and iPad in Safari has been a straightforward affair for years now.

Sometimes, you may want a fresh start with your web browsing — perhaps to get rid of some history that may bring up a memory you'd rather forget as you type in a website URL in the address bar.

Apple makes this feature very easy to access on both the iPhone and iPad by offering two ways to clear your history. So with this in mind, here's how you can do just that and make a fresh start in Safari .

Viewing your web history in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is very easy to do — and it's all done from Safari.

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar that's below the address bar.
  • Tap the History icon in the upper right corner. Here, you can view your entire web history.

To search for bookmarks, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar at the bottom of the app, then select the Bookmark icon.

  • Use the History search bar to find previously viewed pages.

To find History, tap the History menu. Then use the search to find previously viewed information.

If the time calls to wipe most or all of your web browsing history in Safari, here's how to do it on both iPhone and iPad.

To note, the below steps will be the same if you attempt to wipe your web browsing history on an iPhone 15 Pro Max , and an iPad Mini 6 for example.

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button.
  • Select the History icon in the upper right corner.
  • Tap Clear and select how much history you'd like to clear: the last hour, the last day, 48 hours' worth, or all recorded history.

One more thing… A feature no one talks about

Privacy on the web matters more than ever in these modern times. Websites store the pages you click on, especially when you sign into a page that can contain personal information about you.

It's great to have a feature like this in Safari — but it would be good to have this automated. To tell Apple's web browser to automatically clear history after 24 hours would be very useful, as you wouldn't leave a trail behind.

Regardless, it's still a good feature, and one you should use every week.

How to View Browsing History on Safari

It's free and super easy to set up

Safari is a popular web browser developed by Apple Inc. for its devices. One of the essential features of Safari is its browsing history that keeps track of the websites you have visited on the browser. If you want to revisit a previously visited website or clear your browsing history for privacy reasons, it is important to know how to access and view your browsing history. In this article, we will guide you through the process of viewing browsing history on Safari for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Understanding Safari Browsing History

Before we dive into the specifics of viewing browsing history on Safari, let's first understand what it is and why it is important. Browsing history is a log of websites that you have visited using the Safari browser. Essentially, every time you visit a website on Safari, it is added to your browsing history, along with the date and time of your visit. The browsing history helps you to revisit a website quickly and also improves your web surfing experience. Knowing how to access and manage your browsing history can help you optimize your browsing experience and protect your privacy.

What is Browsing History?

Browsing history is a record of the websites that you have visited on your web browser. It includes the name of the website, web address, the date and time of your visit, and any cookies stored by the website. Every web browser, including Safari, keeps track of a browsing history to improve user experience by allowing users to revisit their favorite websites without having to type in the website's address or search for it again.

Why is Viewing Browsing History Important?

Viewing browsing history is important for several reasons. First and foremost, it allows you to revisit previously visited websites quickly, without having to type in the URL or search for it. Additionally, browsing history can help you keep track of the websites you have visited, and you can use it as a reference when researching a particular topic. Lastly, viewing your browsing history can help you keep an eye on your online activity and ensure that you are not accidentally visiting inappropriate websites or revealing sensitive information.

Private Browsing is a feature that prevents Safari from storing information on sites you have visited. It ensures there’s no record of your online activity, including passwords or autofill information. It also prevents iCloud from storing data on any tabs that you open. To provide an additional layer of privacy, Safari prevents sites and content providers from tracking you. Any cookies you might have picked up are deleted once you close the tab.

This article applies to all iPad devices with iOS 10 or iPadOS 13 or later. The process for managing browser history in Safari on an iPhone is slightly different.

How to View and Delete Your iPad Browser History in Safari

Reviewing your iPad browser history is a straightforward process. Safari stores a log of websites you visit along with other related components, such as the cache and cookies. These elements enhance your browsing experience, but you may want to delete your browsing history for privacy reasons.

You can manage your web browsing history on the iPad in two ways. The easiest option is to do it directly in Safari:

Open the Safari web browser.

How to Delete History and Cookies From the iPad Settings App

Deleting the browser history through Safari doesn't remove all the data it stores. For a thorough cleaning, go to the iPad Settings app. You can also delete the browsing history and cookies from the Settings app. Clearing the history this way deletes everything Safari saved.

Select the gear icon on the Home screen to open the iPad Settings .

Scroll down and select Safari .

How to Delete Stored Website Data on iPad

Safari sometimes stores additional website data on top of a list of web pages you visited. For example, it can save passwords and preferences for frequently visited sites. If you want to delete this data but don't want to clear the browsing history or cookies, selectively delete specific data saved by Safari using the iPad Settings app.

Open the iPad Settings app.

Scroll to the bottom of the Safari settings screen and select Advanced .

Select  Website Data to display a breakdown of the data each website currently stores on the iPad.

Select Show All Sites to display the expanded list if necessary.

Select  Remove All Website Data  at the bottom of the screen to delete the site data at once, or swipe left on individual items to clear items one at a time.

This means that you can start browsing on your iPhone and continue later on your Mac. Let me quickly show you how to set this up.

Manage Your Safari Browsing History Across Multiple Devices Using iCloud Sync

To use the iCloud sync feature, you must have iCloud enabled on all the devices you own and they all need to be signed in to the iCloud with the same Apple ID.

If you have Safari iCloud syncing turned on and you clear your history, it will also be cleared from all of your other Apple devices with iCloud sync enabled. How can you enable and disable iCloud sync for your Safari browsing history on your Mac and iPhone?

Manage Your Safari Browsing History Across Multiple Devices Using iCloud Sync on Mac

2. Select Safari > Preferences > iCloud Option

How to Clear Safari Browsing History and Cache

In theory this should speed up your browsing experience, but there are some scenarios where you might want to clear the cache and start anew. Keep reading to learn how it's done on Mac, iPhone , and iPad .

If a site you regularly frequent has elements that have stopped working, or if a site has stopped loading completely, there may be a conflict between an older version of it that Safari has cached and a newer one.

how to find browser history safari

Clear your browsing history

You can remove all records that Safari keeps of where you’ve browsed during a period of time you choose. If your Mac and your other devices have the iCloud Safari feature turned on, your browsing history is removed from all of them. Clearing your browsing history in Safari doesn’t clear any browsing histories kept independently by websites you visited.

Open Safari for me

Choose History > Clear History and Website Data, then click the pop-up menu and choose how far back you want your browsing history cleared.

When you clear your history, Safari removes data it saves as a result of your browsing, including:

History of webpages you visited

The back and forward list for open webpages

Top Sites that aren’t marked as permanent

Frequently visited site list

Cookies and website data saved while visiting webpages

Recent searches

Icons for open webpages

Snapshots saved for open webpages

List of items you downloaded (downloaded files aren’t removed)

Websites added for Quick Website Search

Websites that asked to use your location

Websites that asked to send you notifications

Websites with plug-in content you started by clicking a Safari Power Saver notice

Responses to requests to let websites use WebGL

Tips for Managing Safari History

Managing your Safari history goes beyond simply accessing your browsing data; it involves maintaining privacy, optimizing performance, and streamlining your browsing experience. Here are some valuable tips for effectively managing your Safari history:

Regularly Clear Your History

Regularly clearing your browsing history can help protect your privacy and free up storage space on your device. Safari allows you to clear your history from the last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all time. By periodically clearing your history, you can ensure that your browsing habits remain private and reduce the clutter of stored data.

Use Private Browsing Mode

Safari offers a Private Browsing mode that prevents the browser from storing your browsing history, cookies, and other site data. This mode is ideal for sensitive browsing sessions, such as online banking or researching confidential topics. To activate Private Browsing, simply open a new private window by clicking on "File" in the top menu bar and selecting "New Private Window."

Manage Website Data

In addition to browsing history, Safari also stores website data, including cookies, cache, and local storage. Managing this data can help optimize your browsing experience and address potential privacy concerns. You can access this feature by clicking on "Safari" in the top menu bar, selecting "Preferences," and navigating to the "Privacy" tab. From there, you can manage website data and remove stored information for specific websites.

Sync History Across Devices

If you use Safari across multiple Apple devices, such as an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, you can enable iCloud syncing to ensure that your browsing history is consistent across all devices. This feature allows you to seamlessly pick up where you left off on a different device and access the same browsing history, providing a cohesive browsing experience.

Utilize Bookmarks

To efficiently manage your browsing history, consider using bookmarks to save important websites for future reference. By organizing your bookmarks into folders and categories, you can easily revisit frequently accessed websites without relying solely on your browsing history. This approach can help declutter your history while maintaining quick access to essential webpages.

By implementing these tips, you can effectively manage your Safari history, enhance your privacy, and optimize your browsing experience. Whether you prioritize privacy, performance, or convenience, understanding how to manage your browsing history empowers you to make the most of your Safari experience.

Possessing this history makes it much easier to return to a previously visited page, as you can access that history and simply tap on the page that you want to visit.

Our article below will show you how to quickly discover and use your Safari iPhone history.

If you’ve updated to iOS 15, your address bar may now be at the bottom of the screen. If this is the case, your screen may differ from the examples in the guide below. Yet, the buttons for accessing the history remain in the same locations.

Step 1: Launch the Safari browser.

You should now be able to see your browsing history. You can navigate to the page by tapping on an item in the list. Individual Web pages in this history can be deleted by swiping to the left and hitting the Delete button.

Your browser’s search history will be mixed in with the pages you’ve visited. This implies that the terms you entered in the search field at the top or bottom of the screen will be visible as well. Depending on your selected search engine, your search phrases will appear beside domains such as “google.com” or “bing.com.”

Continue reading our tutorial below for more information on locating and using history data in your iPhone’s Safari browser.

Further Details about Checking Safari History on iPhone

It is important to note that Safari does not save your history for pages visited while using Private Browsing. Toggling between ordinary and private browsing is as simple as touching the Tabs icon (two overlapping squares) at the bottom of the screen and selecting the Private option.

Safari also does not save browsing history for other iPhone browsers, such as Google Chrome or Firefox. Instead, you’d have to open those browsers to see their history.

Also, deleting the browsing history for Safari will only affect the browsing history for the Safari app. Other browsers’ history menus will remain accessible on your iOS device unless you opt to delete the existing data for those browsers as well.

Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data to remove your Safari history. This will also clear your cookies and log you out of any accounts you are presently signed into.

When you remove Safari’s browser history, you won’t be able to view Safari history for any browsing sessions that occurred before the deletion. Safari will only display your Online surfing history when that information has been removed.

If you haven’t erased Safari history previously, your browser history can be quite large. Normally, the device’s full history will be available for 30 days.

How to Lookup Safari History on an iPhone

Searching through your iPhone Safari history is another intriguing thing you can do with it.

When you open Safari, press the book symbol at the bottom of the screen, then select the History tab at the top of the screen, you’ll notice a “Search History” area.

When you tap inside that field and type a search query, you’ll see a list of pages from your history that contain those search terms.

This is especially useful if you recall a single word or term but don’t remember where you saw it or the name of the website where you saw it.

If you have another browser installed on your iPhone, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, those browsers will also retain history, which you may search through in the same way.

This means that the terms you typed into the search bar at the top or bottom of the screen will also be visible. Depending on your default search engine you will see your search terms listed alongside domains like “google.com” or “bing.com.

More Information on How to Check Safari History on iPhone

Note that Safari does not store your history for pages that you have visited while using Private Browsing. You can toggle between regular and private browsing by touching the Tabs icon (it looks like two overlapping squares) at the bottom of the screen and selecting the Private option.

Safari also does not store browsing history for other browsers on your iPhone , such as Google Chrome or Firefox. You would need to open those browsers to view their histories instead.

Additionally, if you have deleted browsing history for Safari, it will only affect the browsing history for the Safari app. You will still be able to access the history menu for other browsers on your iOS device until you choose to remove the existing data for those browsers, too.

You can delete your Safari history by going to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data . This will also delete cookies and log you out of any accounts to which you are currently logged in.

Once you have deleted browser history in Safari, you won’t be able to view Safari history for any browsing sessions that occurred prior to the deletion. Safari will only show your Web browsing history that has occurred after that information was deleted.

Your Safari browser history can be pretty extensive if you haven’t deleted Safari history before. Typically the full history that is available on the device will go back 30 days.

If you tap inside that field and type a search term, you will see the pages from your history that include those search terms.

This is especially handy if you can remember a single word or term that you are looking for but don’t remember where you saw it or the name of the page where you saw it.

If you have another browser on your iPhone, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox , those browsers will also store history that you can search through in a similar manner.

How to delete your search history

how to find browser history safari

Your search history is a window into your inner life . Anyone with access to it knows what your hobbies and interests are, your sexual orientation and preferences, the things that worry you (for example your medical concerns), your political affiliations, your financial situation, and much more.

In this article, we’ll explore why it’s important to delete your search and (closely related) browsing history and how to do it, but also the limitations of deleting your search and browsing history. Unfortunately, you can’t delete everything that’s out there.

However, moving forward, you can take steps to prevent others from seeing and logging your search and browsing history in the first place. We’ll also discuss these.

Why you should delete your search history

Does turning off personalized ads prevent google from tracking me.

  • Prevention is always better than a cure

As we noted above, your search history and browsing history reveal a great deal about you. This highly personal information is extremely valuable for the purposes of surveillance and influencing your behaviors.

Targeted advertising

The more advertising and analytics companies know about you, the more successfully they can target you with ever more personalized ads. Our analysis found that your data may be worth over $600 a year for advertising purposes alone.

Alphabet (Google’s parent company) is now worth over $1.9 trillion , a staggering fortune, made by offering services that are almost entirely “free” to use, but which it monetizes by selling your search queries to advertising and analytics companies.

Google so dominates the search engine landscape that searching for anything online is now commonly referred to as “googling”, and its search services form the backbone of the other services it offers, such as Google Maps, Gmail, Google Calendar, and more.

Government mass surveillance

In 2013, Edward Snowden exposed the stupefying scale and ambition of the United States and United Kingdom’s mass surveillance programs, which operated on a “ collect it all ” principle to harvest data from almost everyone on the planet. Little has changed in real terms since then, and in many ways, things are now worse .

The NSA's PRISM surveillance program

And it’s not just NSA and its 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes, and 14 Eyes allies that spy on your search history. Almost all governments have some form of mass surveillance system, even if it’s only legislation that requires internet service providers (ISPs ) to log their customers’ browsing histories and store this data where it can be accessed by government agencies for a certain amount of time.

How to delete Google search history

You can tell Google to delete your search history. Whether it really deletes it is hard to know, but doing this probably prevents Google from using past search history to directly target you with ads or selling it to third-party advertising and analytics companies. It’s anybody’s guess whether governments can still access this “deleted” data.

How to delete Google search history on your desktop

The easiest way to delete your entire Google search history across all apps and devices is using a desktop browser. To do this:

1. Visit myactivity.google.com/myactivity and sign in with your Google account. You can now review the information Google keeps about you. When you’re ready, click Delete .

4. Click Delete to confirm you’d like to delete your activity.

Deleting your search history in the Google Play Store only deletes your search history on the Play Store app on the current device.

How to delete your browser search history

Of course, it may not just be Google and your government that you’d rather not see your search history. Deleting your browser search history prevents friends, family, and colleagues who have physical access to your device from seeing what you’ve been up to online.

In this section, we’ll look at how to delete your search history in a selection of popular browsers on different platforms. Please be aware, though, that much like using incognito/private mode , deleting your browser history does nothing to prevent anyone on the internet from seeing your search history , such as your ISP or the websites you visit.

On your Android device, tap ☰ → History → ⋮ → Clear history (to delete all your search history).

You can ask Google to delete your search history from its apps, and you can delete any search history stored locally on your devices. However, your ISP can see every website you visit online, and almost all ISPs log this information (in many countries, they are required to do so by law).

In some counties (such as the United States), ISPs are permitted to sell customer data to advertisers . In almost every country, they will hand over the data at the request of law enforcement or government agencies.

No ISP will delete your browsing history just because you ask it to, so there’s little you can do about the data it already has. However, moving forward, you can prevent your ISP from seeing what you do by subscribing to a VPN service such as Proton VPN.

A VPN routes your internet connection from your device to a VPN server run by a commercial VPN service such as Proton VPN. The connection between your device and the VPN server is securely encrypted so that no one sitting between your device and the VPN server can see the contents of your data.

How a VPN works

DNS queries , which translate human-friendly URLs into computer-friendly numerical values, are usually handled by your ISP. But when you connect to a VPN, it routes these DNS queries through the encrypted VPN tunnel and handles them itself.

Learn more about how a VPN works

Your ISP can see that you’re connected to an IP address belonging to the VPN server but can’t see which websites you connect to after that.

Your ISP and websites you visit see the IP address of the VPN server

This means that connecting to a VPN prevents your ISP from seeing what you do online. And because most government mass surveillance programs rely on requiring ISPs to log their customers’ browsing activity, a trustworthy VPN is effective at preventing governments from collecting your search history through untargeted surveillance.

[ Protect your browsing history with Proton VPN ]

To prevent Google from using your browsing history to serve you personalized ads, head over to Google’s My Ad Center , sign in with your Google account, and toggle the Personalized ads switch off .

Turn off personalized ads in Google's My Ad Center

Please be aware, though, that turning off personalized ads in Google’s settings doesn’t stop Google from tracking your browsing history . But it does change how that data is used. When you opt out of personalized ads, Google will no longer use your browsing history to serve you ads based on your interests and behavior. Instead, you’ll receive ads based on factors like your general location or the content of the site you are visiting.

However, Google may still collect and use your data for other purposes, such as improving its services, developing new features, or ensuring the security of its systems. This data collection can include your search history, the videos you watch on YouTube, and your interactions with other Google services.

Final thoughts: Prevention is always better than a cure

Asking Google (and other online services) to delete your search history from within its apps is probably better than doing nothing at all to protect your privacy. But a far better way is to use apps and services that don’t collect your search history in the first place. For example:

  • Use Proton apps. When you search for emails in Proton Mail, events in Proton Calendar, or files in Proton Drive, the search is performed locally on your device . Just as our zero-access encryption ensures no one but you can access your data stored on Proton services, we also have no access to your search history.
  • Use your browser’s private or incognito mode . While your browser’s private or incognito mode will do nothing to prevent anyone on the internet from knowing what you do online, it will at least protect your online privacy from others who share your devices.
  • Use a privacy-focused search engine — Alternative search engines to Google, such as DuckDuckGo, don’t log your IP address or record your search history.
  • Block third-party cookies to prevent websites from tracking you across the internet.
  • If you must use Google, don’t search while signed in to your Google Account, and use a VPN so Google can’t link your IP address to your searches.

It’s not easy to stay private on the internet, but with some common sense and the help of privacy-focused services such Proton, it is possible to avoid most online tracking.

How this browser extension is friendlier on my budget and the environment

  • Beni is a free browser extension for Chrome & Safari making sustainable clothing shopping easier.
  • It matches current items with secondhand options from over 40 online stores for budget-friendly prices.
  • Beni works by adding the extension, then selecting items to find exact or similar thrifted options.

While I'm not writing about the newest, most fashionable earbuds and headphones , I spend a lot of time shopping for clothes online. Admittedly, I'm one of those people who claim I have nothing to wear whilst staring at a closet full of clothes.

Finding the Beni extension was the perfect compromise that made shopping sustainably for my favorite items even easier while performing some much-needed online resale therapy.

As a dedicated clothing shopper, however, I've never been one to discriminate against a good brand or good deal, even if the item was pre-owned. In fact, I do a lot of my shopping via online or physical thrift stores in an attempt to do some good for the environment, combating the fast-fashion industry, and protecting my wallet.

So, finding the Beni extension was the perfect compromise that made shopping sustainably for my favorite items even easier while performing some much-needed online retail therapy -- or rather, resale therapy.

Bose's new Ultra Open earbuds are the fashion and function success I can't stop wearing

What is the beni shopping extension, free browser extension for chrome and safari.

Beni, is a free shopping extension available on your desktop for Chrome and Safari that works alongside your current shopping page to look for either exact or similar clothing items at over 40 second-hand online stores, including ThreadUp, The RealReal, Poshmark, Rent the Runway, and eBay for a more budget-friendly price.

Essentially, Beni streamlines second-hand shopping by matching the current desired (full priced) item with either the exact item or one similar via quality, second-hand thrifting apps.

Fairphone's new wireless earbuds take sustainability to the next level

How beni works when shopping online: streamlining secondhand.

Upon adding to your browser, you'll see a Beni browser extension icon - which is a green circle with orange sunglasses - in the bottom left corner of your webpage. That icon is your key to unlocking the best thrifting deals. Here's when to click on it.

  • Start shopping online as you normally would. Open your window to your usual favorite online outlet .
  • Select an item you like , whether you're tempted to add it to your cart or if you know it's an absolute must-have.
  • Click the green Beni icon in the bottom right corner, and you'll see up to 20 options for either the exact item, or similar items automatically displayed on the right side of your screen from third-party, second-hand outlets.
