Merapi Lava Tour: The Complete Guide

' src=

Taking an off road jeep on a Merapi Lava tour is one of the most fun things to do in Yogyakarta . The tour is easy to arrange. Let me tell you about the tour and show you how you can make a booking (Merapi is also a popular destination for trekking , something to consider if you like the outdoors).

Overview of the Lava Tour Merapi

There are three options available for the Merapi Lava Tour. These are the short, medium and long route. The short route consists of an 1,5 – 2 hours journey around Merapi. It costs Rp350,000 to rent the jeep. Each jeep can comfortably fit three passengers, but you can squeeze in up to five passengers if you need to.

Let me give you a quick overview of some of the highlights of the Merapi Lava Tour along with a rough itinerary. Let’s get started:

Museum Sisa Hartaku

This is a modest museum that was established by a small family (Mr. Kimin and Mrs. Wati). Museum Sisa Hartaku can be translated to My Remaining Treasure Museum. The museum is actually within their house. This house was affected by the Merapi eruption in 2010.

The family (initiated by their first child) created this museum to inform people about the last Merapi eruption. Various personal things that were owned by the family are displayed at the museum such as: motorcycles, clothing, cutlery, furniture, pets, television and much more. I got melancholy feeling looking at their clock attached to the wall. The hands of the clock are stuck forever at the moment of the eruption. It is a chilling reminder of what happened when the hot ash cloud reached the village.

Several villages that were affected by the Merapi eruption

During the tour you will pass through several villages that were affected by the Merapi eruption (sorry I can’t remember the names of the villages). Some of the villages are now fields farmed by the locals. In these villages you will see abandoned buildings in the middle of these fields.

Alien stone

There is one big stone that is called Alien stone (Batu Alien) that was hurled out of the volcano during the eruption. The surroundings here are picturesque. During the Merapi Lava Tour you will come to the edge of a cliff where you can see one of the massive rivers around Merapi. Please be really careful when you are enjoying the view from the edge of the cliff as it is pretty high.

The bunker is located in Kaliadem and is no longer used anymore. Two people were found dead inside this bunker in 2006 (eruption) . They tried to save themselves by entering the bunker and were trapped by debris from the eruption of Mount Merapi. They were covered with up to 6 feet of debris. The ash was as hot as 572 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you walk up a bit from the bunker and you can see such a beautiful view. The distance from the bunker to the Merapi summit is less than 10 km. So you can see Merapi pretty close and clear (if the weather permits). The area feels really magical and is my favourite spot of this tour.

Preparation

The short Merapi Lava tour lasts for 2-hours. To make sure you are well prepared for the tour I would advise that you bring the following items:

  • Water and a snack
  • Optional: Sunblock and mask/a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose because it can be a bit dusty

The jeep driver who will be your guide (plus photographer too) usually has a basic level of English. If you wish to have a dedicated guide for a better explanation about what you see during the tour one can be arranged. This guide service is available at an additional cost.

Did you know that you can do a sunrise and a night package of the Merapi Lava Tour? The Sunrise Lava Tour starts at 4:00 am. There is also a Night Lava Tour that starts at 6-6.30 pm. The great thing about the tour is you have a spectacular view of the sky (again, if the weather permits)! Since I am a big fan of sunrises I am quite curious about the Sunrise Merapi Lava Tour. I have heard that people sometimes combine the Merapi Lava Tour with a visit to the Lost World Castle (I have never been there myself). I think it is like a theme park with some of funny photo opportunities. Maybe a fun place to go with kids or friends.

Book The Merapi Lava Tour

The Merapi lava tour is a nice adventure and perfect for the family. You also get to see and experience a side of Merapi that few visitors to Yogyakarta ever see. I’ve done the tour twice myself and it’s definitely something that I’d recommend to friends. If you’re interested in joining the Merapi Lava tour I can help arrange everything for you.

Included in the Package:

  • Half day car rental
  • Pick up and drop off at your hotel
  • Jeep rental
  • Pack lunch (optional)
  • Dedicated guide (optional)

Hopefully the illegal sand mining going on in the area doesn’t spoil any of those beautiful vistas – 500 trucks a day is an impressive number indeed!

Nah, ternyata jalannya jauh pisan. Akhirnya cuma bisa nyampe ke rumahnya Alm. Mbak Marijan dan suasana di sana…menyedihkan. 🙁

Hi Firsta, Pls recommend a local tour for my family trip to Yogyakarta this July 2016. It’s a 4days/3nights tour.

Thank you. Lee

Hi Lee. I’d recommend reviewing the Yogya Package Tours . There are 4 day 3 Night packages available.

Nice blog! Would you have any details regarding the medium tour of Mt. Merapi? I will be doing the sunrise tour in Borobudur and was thinking of heading out to do the Merapi tour after before I head on catch the sunset at Prambanan. What would you recommend, the short or medium tour given the time constraints? Also, can I just book the tour at the site just in case we decide to change our itinerary on the day itself? Lastly, is there a food stall nearby where we can have some lunch?

Hi Alexis. I emailed you regarding your enquiry.

' src=

You have a wonderful website- it’s super informative. Do you have a tour that includes Borobudur, Prambanan, and Mt. Merapi? If not, how many days would be needed to see those three sites?

What are the costs for transportation to and from the train station?

Hi Mike. Thanks for getting in touch. There is no tour that combines all three activities, but you can do those activities as a shared tour. It would take two days to do the tour (Borobudur and Prambanan in the morning and then overnight at Merapi). The cost to and from the train station would obviously depend on where you are planning to go.

' src=

Hello Firsta, Izzit possible to hike the Mt Merapi on this coming August as just erupted by May 2018? Thinking to hike and overnight for a sunset trip.

Hi Ryan, It is tough to predict. At the moment it is still not possible to do hiking activity in Merapi.

' src=

Dear Firsta, Would like to know the route taken by the jeep tour. Which jeep tour would take us to the top and see the crater? Is the tour suitable for senior citizen?

He waited for us at 7:00 and he was on time. After 3 hours we reached Bukit Lawang. The village is niced and we swam in the river for sometime after our trip. My guide Ucok did a great job, I saw orang utans and many other animals. He knows a lot about wildlife and the nature as he is a local guide. • martinlU8687IX 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A memory for life I and my 14 year old son did this trip from Medan. We were fetched from our house at 7 in the morning and had a pleasant drive in a big comfortable car with AC. At Bukit Lawang we were met up by our excellent guide Tondi (Tony). He is a young guy of 25 years, full of energy, speaks excellent English and really loves his work... He was very knowledge about the forest, the plants and the animals and did his utmost to give us a memory for life. The hike was adapted to our wishes - we are both quite fit so we could take a longer walk through more difficult terrain. We saw Orangutans at about 10 different occasions during the day - sometimes coming really close! We were served an excellent (and still hot!) lunch with traditional Nasi Goreng and a wonderful array of fresh fruits as dessert. As an added bonus / adventure our lunch was cut a bit short when a female orangutan decided she also wanted some of our fruits - here we were got really close to the orangutan (a power feeling!) - but we still felt safe as our guide kept us at the right distance. Apart from the orangutans we saw an abundance of other primates such as Thomas' leaf monkey, macaques and baboons. There is also a wonderful amount of different birds, trees, terminates, ants and smaller insects. Both myself and my boy also had the "joy" of getting a leech each that sucked our blood - it's all included in the experience. In the late afternoon when we returned from the hike we took a refreshing swim in the rather turbulent river passing through the small village. The water in the river was very high so Tondi had earlier advised us against doing river rafting back to the village which is otherwise an option - having the safety of the guests in mind. We returned to Medan around 19-20. Some tips - bring water (lots of water! 1.5-2 L per person), sturdy shoes that you can throw away (they get really dirty), long pants, hat and mosquito repellent. Also bring along swimwear and a complete change of clothes - you will be soaking wet with sweat and mud after the hike. If your are in Sumatra and have the possibility I would recommend this tour - you won't regret it. My 14 year old son absolutely loved it! Read more Written 16 July 2023

My favorite is the Wayang shadow puppet workshop. We met the artisan who makes the puppets, explained his process and gave us a short show in english. I was able to buy some puppets and masks from the artist as well. We went through Chinatown before hand, the old harbor, and the town square. After the Wayang museum we went to the history museum. Tony had a lot of historical knowledge as well. It was such a memorable tour. Thank you Tony for an amazing tour!! I also felt safe as a solo female traveler. Read more Written 8 July 2023

  • fozjon 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles simply amazing we only learned about Sumatran orangutans from a surprise conversation a few days before we left home. Doing this trek and tour from Medan in one day, made for a very long, somewhat strenuous day. The trek isn't easy, but we managed, even in the mud, even in rubber sandals. Ocok, was our guide. He is amazing. I want to come back and do longer tours with him...and just spend more time with him. He did a great job. Even though we aren't promised that we'll see orangutans, we saw at least seven in our trek, including a group within our first few minutes starting out. And, when we stopped for lunch, we had another come very close to us. This was quite exciting. And there was much to see besides just orangutans, but we would have been disappointed had we missed them. Read more Written 2 July 2023

The 3 hour drive to Bukit Lawang was long, but the driver was very skilled in trying to get out of the morning traffic jam of Medan, after that it was full speed ahead. The tour guides Ucok and Tondi were excellent, they were very knowledgeable about everything in the jungle and also things outside of it. From differentiating between male and female Giant Ants, to the different types of plants and trees, and of course, the lovely orangutans and Thomas Langurs. They work well in a team, with Ucok going on ahead to find the orangutans while Tondi lead my friend and I through the jungle while giving facts about interesting things he sees. Ucok and Tondi were also very friendly, social and hilarious, making it feel like we're just trekking with our friends. I'm not the most fit person, but the trek didn't feel tiring and it was a good balance between walking and taking a break. We had plenty of time to watch the Orangutans; the guides were very chill and let us enjoy the nature at our pace. There was a lot to see, do and enjoy. Lunch was in the jungle and it was very delightful, with pineapple and passion fruit for dessert. After the trek we headed to the river and we were able to dip into the river and have a swim. After the long trek, it was very refreshing to have all the sweat washed away by the river. A great ending to the day! Read more Written 16 October 2022

When we got out of the car, our guide Ucok was waiting for us. We picked up his brother Tondy on our way to the border of Gunung Leuser National Park. Within 10 minutes we saw our first orangutans. A female with a baby. In total we spotted 8 different orangutans during the trekking!!! It was such a lovely and exciting day. Ucok and Tondy are really passionate and have a lot of knowledge about the jungle. They can tell you all about the animals and the trees. We can really recommend booking with Ucok and Tondy. We had a great time and the lunch/fresh fruits and rafting was amazing! The rafting is a fun and easy ride with beautiful sights of the jungle. The fruits were actually so good, that a orangutan came to steal our pineapple. We were definitely a bit scared, since we didn’t see her coming, but our guides made sure we were safe! During the trekking, the climbs and heat can be challenging. So make sure you wear good shoes and bring enough water. Also don’t forget mosquito spray! There are a lot of mosquitoes once you enter the national park. Book this trip and have an amazing jungle experience! 🦧🌴 Read more Written 30 September 2022

After the lava

When Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted in 2010, lava come pouring down the slopes at 110km/h. The villages in its path didn’t stand a chance!

Mount Merapi, Indonesia

In October 2010, the most active volcano in Indonesia launched one of its fiercest attacks in modern history.

For days it spewed out molten lava and ash. The ground shook from hundreds of seismic quakes.

When the dust finally settled, 353 people had been killed.

Mount Merapi should be feared. But for many Javanese people, it is also revered.

he volcano, near the city of Yogyakarta, has been mythologised for centuries by the local people. It has been part of their creationism stories… but, in reality, it has also brought finalities.

The local people had plenty of warnings about the series of eruptions that began in October 2010. Thankfully – otherwise the death toll would have been much worse.

The surrounding area was evacuated of 350,000 people. The hundreds who died either didn’t leave or went back too early.

It’s hard to imagine what an erupting volcano would be like up close. But when you hear some of the statistics, you realise you wouldn’t have a chance.

In 2010, the lava flows from Mount Merapi reached speeds of up to 110 kilometres an hour and went as far as 13 kilometres. Ash was falling more than 30 kilometres away.

At one point, a huge fire ball was blown 2 kilometres high into the sky, raining sand up to 10 kilometres away.

At one of the most dangerous stages, ash and gas were spewing 5 kilometres into the sky for more than an hour.

The Mount Merapi eruptions have left scars – for humans and the landscapes. Let’s look first at what it did to the communities in the path of the lava.

Museum Sisa Hartaku

I’m on my way up towards the top of Mount Merapi. On the lower slopes of the mountain are lots of small towns and villages.

There are farms and restaurants. As I go higher up and the vegetation gets thicker, the communities become more sparse.

At one of the towns, I stop. The houses here are no longer lived in – they’re just shells of what they once were.

Concrete ruins left over after lava rushed through and destroyed anything that could be burned or melted.

There’s a small museum set up in the walls of one of the former houses. It’s called Museum Sisa Hartaku and was put together by a former resident.

She has collected items from the area that were damaged by the lava flows and it’s terrifying to see examples of the power of an eruption.

Twisted metal; melted plastic, half a motorbike; a clock that’s stopped at the exact moment of the destruction.

This is how a town ends up looking when it’s in the shadow of one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes.

Mount Merapi jeep tour

The most common way for visitors to explore Mount Merapi is with a jeep tour. There are a few companies that offer the tour and, when you see the roads further up the mountain, you understand why you can’t do this in a normal car.

Bouncing about as we speed over humps and swing around holes, I hold on to a bar tightly and try not to get thrown out. Surely it’s possible to drive smoother and slower, I think.

When the driver suddenly veers off the road and up a hillock just so he can do circles in the mud, I realise that this is part of the experience. Come for the volcano, get the death-defying drive as well!

It’s been raining recently so there are plenty of puddles to make the drive even more thrilling, crashing through them and spraying water everywhere as we speed along the track.

But what I’m not expecting is that we would drive right into a dam. As we drive through the water at high speed, veering at sharp angles, I get soaked by the splash of the other jeeps that have joined us in there.

Gosh, it’s good fun, though, and we do a few laps. Check out this short video from the experience:

Kaliadem Bunker

Back to Mount Merapi, though, and we make it up the volcano to the highest point that the jeep can go, a village called Kaliadem. It’s just 4 kilometres from the top and was destroyed by lava.

A bunker dug into the ground, designed to protect anyone left behind, has survived.

From here you can see the top of Mount Merapi. But what’s more noticeable is the enormous gorge that has been cut into the ground. This is the path some of the lava took, ploughing its way down the mountain, burning a permanent scar into the earth as it went.

Such heat, such speed, such force. Even years later, seeing the physical trauma, you can start to get a sense of the power of this volcano.

Some of Kaliadem village has been rebuilt, though. Shops and restaurants have appeared where the jeeps stop – simple ones but full of life as visitors cram in for a coffee and to compare the craziness of their drivers.

I have seen enough evidence today of why we should fear Mount Merapi, the menacing giant standing over us, fury rumbling inside waiting to burst out again. But I can also see why it has been revered for so many centuries.

As I sit with my coffee, surrounded by people from around the world who have made the journey here, I look out towards the summit and realise it will always be that way.

THE BEST ACCOMMODATION IN YOGYAKARTA

There are some really cool places in Yogyakarta, which is just would you would expect from one of Indonesia’s most creative cities.

If you’re looking for a backpacker option, I would recommend the cool Cubic Jogja .

A good cheap and comfortable hotel is Aloha Hotel .

For some ecofriendly accommodation, there’s the affordable Greenhost Boutique Hotel in a good location.

And when it comes to luxury, I would recommend the Sofia Boutique Residence .

Good post. I always have a habit of seeing only beauty of the nature. But it has an opposite side too. U made me think about the darker side of the nature and the suffering of people over there.

Worth reading. keep posting.

Great post, it is so beautiful place but lava ruins beauty of that palce. it is very sad news for its peoples and hope nature will recover it soon.

Merapi is very special for me. I have climbed it 6 times. The last time I climbed this mountain was July 2010, just several months before the 2010 eruption. If you want to know how the crater view is, climb it. It’s very worthy. It needs about 5-6 hours to climb til the summit. If you start at midnight, then you reach the summit at dawn, and you can watch the sunrise from there. If you start at early evening, then you can build tent just near the top at the midnight. Wake up an hour before sunrise and hike to the summit. Then you get the sunrise. It’s an amazing view. Anyway, your post is great.

Amazing post. I love explore a new place. If Merapi did not effect by volcano, it will be a beautiful travel site. Great photos and good experience. Thanks for share. Thomas

Lovely pictures you managed to take even in a bad weather.

I love those gorges. They’re dramatic and shows how scary the lava was.

Great post! I found the atmosphere at the museum rather chilling, all these everyday objects melted and reduced to ash and rubble. Quite a sight. When you look at ancient eruption sites like Pompeii you are somewhat removed from it due to the thousand of years that separate you from the people that used to live there. But Mount Marapi is so recent it feels very real. As others said before, fantastic photos considering the poor weather we had!

Paket lava tour Merapi dimulai pukul 04.30 – 18.00.

Tur jeep Lava Tour Merapi

Hal Penting Sebelum Memulai Tur

Pos tur lava Merapi

Pertama, pastikan jenis mobilnya.

Dua, tanyakan mengenai fasilitas pengaman.

Penuh Guncangan!

Jeep melewati kubangan air pinggir sungai

Objek wisata Batu Alien

"Kejadianya hari Minggu sekitar jam 1.30 WIB (siang).

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
