Excellent tour and tour guides. Thanks!

From Copenhagen to Helsinki Tour

From Copenhagen to Helsinki

Most of the things were good and itinerary was fine. Guide upto Stockholm Betina Wenziner was good, informative and entertaining. The guide for Helsinki Tony was not very knowledgeable and was a bit flat in his interaction. The hotel in Stockholm could be inmproved. While service and breakfast was good in the Globe Quality hotel, the standard of the room was below 3 star. Also, more local tour in Stockholm where we had to stay 2 days could have improved the experience. But, overall quite satisfied with the overall experience and service by Europamundo.

We did see a LOT, but there was way too much bus time with not much time in the locations. Too many people on the bus and didn't really appreciate the tour being multilingual, we thought we were booking an English tour. Also didn't like having 3 different guides. Our last guide really didn't do much. But, again, we did see

Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords (14 Days)

The itinerary was great with lots of time built in for solo exploration. I liked having an orientation to the towns before heading out on my own. Michael had a lot of knowledge to share about the places we saw. He is s great story teller making everything interesting. His personality is perfect for the job. He kept everyone on time in a very respectful manner which was much appreciated. I also enjoyed the local guides who were also a wealth of knowledge. The optional excursions were Good value for the most part. Our driver was awesome. Despite the challenging terrain I felt very safe and comfortable on the coach. He was always very pleasant.

Two hotels on our tour were not acceptable. Our hotel in Oslo was near a ski slope far away from town, where we wasted half the day of our one day stop in the Capital.. Our hotel in Stockholm was again far away from town and we spent a lot taking a taxi to town and back.. thank God our hotel in Bergen was downtown.. where we were comfortably independent to walk to the sights. The guide and the driver of our bus were excellent , helpful and capable. On a fast paced tour like this the location of hotels is as important as the quality.

Grand Scandinavia (Classic, 20 Days) Tour

Grand Scandinavia (Classic, 20 Days)

A fantastic trip, our guide Greg and driver Zolton were exceptional. I have done many trips with Insight and as well as many, many with other companies but have to say Greg Colgin went out of his way making my trip one of the best ever. A very attentive Tour Director and attention to details the best. As for Zoltan this is the second trip I have travelled with him as driver, a driver I Trust and feel safe with and a man that goes out of his way to make our experience even better. A lovely clean coach each day with beautifully cleaned windows is always a plus. As for Insight I just love the roomy coaches with extra leg space.

Spectacular Scandinavia & its Fjords (Classic, 15 Days)

The tour went beyond our expectations. Our tour director,Greg Colgin, was fantastic! He provided history, insights, funny stories, and ideas for further exploration. He, and driver, Ion, made critical decisions about our travel when weather and road conditions presented challenges. The tour included so much, as every day was loaded with adventure, including just enough free time for independent explorations. Our driver drove the bus with tremendous skill no matter the difficulties of the roads chosen. Everyone felt safe and secure.

We have a very good time. The Troll Expedition guide, Hallur, was very knowledgeable and took good care of the whole group. He went beyond the expectations. We are looking forward to visit Iceland in the future. All the local tour guides were also very good.

What people love about Nordic / Scandinavia Tours

Great tour, short but hit all the places that were on the initinery and the pick up from the hotel was very swift and easy. The guides for the 2 trips were friendly. I love how Mahlia (or Maria?) added her personal touch and stories to the pitch on the bus. I had a great trip in Iceland and want to come back again in different seasons.
I was worried about the culturally mixed tour clients due to some negative reviews from previous clients. But I enjoyed the experiences of mixing with participants from Mexico and the Philippines. Yes sometimes bilingual guides’ presentations were not clear, and I had to ask for clarifications. Hotels were better than I had expected from the reviews; except in one-hotel the lightening was so bd
Lovely places to see. Tour experience was great. We had wonderful times.

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

image-tours-scandinavia

Unless you are a Scandinavia -enthusiast, chances are you probably don’t know a whole lot about the northern European countries that gave us vikings, Thor, and lots of amazing fish dishes. But just because these countries aren’t showcased the same way that the United Kingdom, France, and Germany are doesn’t mean you should write them off.

The Scandinavian countries provide beautiful scenes that look like they are straight out of the movie Frozen (without having to hear that song 1,000 times during your trip!). And using a guided tour to see them is definitely the best way to travel the Nordic countries. In fact, here are 10 reasons why:

1. Researching all of the best places to visit (like Denmark’s Hans Christian Andersen House) takes too much time on your own.

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

If you’ve never been to Scandinavia, chances are you aren’t too familiar with its history or the best sights to see. An escorted tour ensures you see all of the important monuments, castles, museums, etc., without having to take the time to do the research yourself.

Take the Hans Christian Andersen House in Odense, Denmark, for example. Many of his stories have inspired pop culture hits today such as The Little Mermaid , The Ugly Duckling , and The Snow Queen (read up on them all here ). You should definitely visit if you’re traveling through Scandinavia, but without a tour operator, you might not even have known it existed.

Everyone has heard of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, but have you ever heard of Gamla Stan? Literally meaning “Old Town,” Gamla Stan dates back to the 13th century and is the birthplace of Stockholm. Walking down the ancient cobblestoned streets feels like you’ve been transported back in time. The colorful buildings lining the roads and water add to the quaint and tranquil atmosphere of this medieval town.

While you may have thought to visit Stockholm, you might not have known about the charming suburb of Gamla Stan . Thanks to guided tours, missing out on beautiful and unique destinations is never a problem.

2. Travel through all of the Scandinavian countries and then some.

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

Imagine planning a trip to a European country. You want to make sure that wherever you go you will see the best of the best, right? Now imagine you are planning on visiting more than just one country. How about more than two? Three?

With a guided tour, not only will you see all the significant spots of Scandinavia, you can also see most of Northern Europe. In fact, it’s entirely possible to see a total of seven countries during your tour of Scandinavia and the Baltics.

Remember that trip you were planning yourself? Do you think you’d be able to cover seven different countries, seeing all that you want to in efficient amount of time? Don’t worry! The expert tour operators will handle all of that for you. All you need to do is pack your bags, hop on a plane, and enjoy Northern Europe!

3. Or if you’re pressed for time, stick solely to Scandinavia.

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

Life is busy. It’s hard to commit to over a week of travel, let alone two! But life is also short. It’s important to live it to the fullest, which means getting away and embarking on eye-opening adventures. And while seeing the majority of Northern Europe is a possibility, it’s not necessarily for everyone.

Can’t commit to being away for more than two weeks, but still want to see the heart of Northern Europe? By dropping the Baltic countries, you can still see all of the superb sights Scandinavia has to offer in only 12 days . This way, you won’t feel rushed while touring all four countries, but will still be home in less than two weeks.

4. Enjoy authentic, but tasty, meals all throughout your tour.

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

Let’s be honest—the best part about any vacation is taking a vacation from your healthy diet. You’re splurging on traveling to Europe, why not splurge on your calories for the trip too? And great news for the foodies—most of your meals are included on a guided tour!

Your tour company chooses hotels that serve daily breakfasts , usually buffet style (foodies rejoice!), that include a selection of breads, fruits, cold cuts, cereals, and more. Lunch is usually on your own, which is a fantastic time to explore the local cuisine for a smaller price than a dinner.

Speaking of dinner, while most are included with your tour, there are optional dinner excursions you can easily add on that also enhance the cultural experience. There could be no better way to immerse yourself in the Scandinavian experience than with a Viking Dinner . Enjoy an authentic, multi-course feast from the Iron Age, when Vikings ruled the seas. Food is prepared with spices that would have been brought to the Nordic countries during that time period, and each diner gets a glass of mead with their meal.

5. Nordic country-hopping is no problem when you’re on a guided tour!

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

Crossing the North Sea might seem daunting if you’ve never been before—should you fly across or take a boat? If a boat, what ferry system should you use?

Plus English is not the native language of any of the countries you will be visiting, and while it is commonly spoken globally, is it really worth the risk to find a cabbie who has no idea where you want to go?

Let your tour service take care of all of your transportation needs (including airport transfers )! That way, you know you are using a safe and reliable service while abroad to travel through Scandinavia and the Baltics.

6. Don’t let the different languages hold you back from the beauty of Scandinavia and the Baltics!

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

There’s a great possibility that if you travel Scandinavia on your own, you could find yourself in a restaurant where all you hear is this . While we all love the Swedish Chef, it might make for a better dining experience if you know exactly what it is you are ordering.

If traveling with a tour company, however, your tour operator will have planned to visit destinations with English-speakers, but if a situation arises where the local language is needed, your tour operator will help navigate any language barriers. It would be a shame to miss out on something spectacular simply because neither you nor anyone you are traveling knows the Nordic languages.

7. If you are spending a lot of time and money on a trip, shouldn’t you let the professionals help?

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

Let’s face it—traveling to Europe isn’t the same as a domestic trip. You are spending a lot of time and money on your tour of Scandinavia, so shouldn’t you invest wisely and hire the professionals?

Using a guided tour gives you the best value for your time abroad. Tour guides are professionals; they do this for a living. They will ensure you have the trip of a lifetime ! How so? Your tour operator will know the history of a particular area, the best places to visit, and how to efficiently navigate the countries.

Don’t risk it—book a guided tour and protect your memories of a truly once-in-a-lifetime trip.

8. Feel safe traveling through Northern Europe in a group setting.

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

That age-old adage, “safety in numbers,” has stuck around for a reason. Pickpockets, thieves, and others of the like are more inclined to prey on the lone traveler or those traveling in pairs. With a group, there’s a greater chance of the perpetrator being caught or seen before they can even act.

The other good news? With a tour operator , there’s less of a chance that you’ll even be in an area where these sorts of crimes occur. Your tour company will choose reputable hotels in safe areas. If you were to book a hotel on your own, could you truly know that it was the “best” place to stay without ever having been there?

9. Ensure access to historical Scandinavian sites and monuments.

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

What could be worse than reaching the museum or monument you’ve most wanted to see and finding out they are about to close or they are too full to allow you in?

Tour groups reserve their spots way in advance to ensure admission to popular attractions—and they dedicate enough time in the schedule for travelers to fully appreciate them. Your tour operator may even be able to get you into these places before or after regular visiting hours for a private viewing! Wouldn’t that be amazing for the fascinating Viking Museum on the Bygdoy Peninsula of Oslo or the marvelous Skansen Open Air Museum in Stockholm!

10. Need any help at all? You’ve got it!

10 Reasons Why a Guided Tour Is the Best Way to Travel Scandinavia

Even the most prepared traveler can’t keep errant baggageman from losing their luggage. Should that catastrophe (because let’s face it, lost luggage is a catastrophe) happen to you on a guided tour, you are not alone.

Tour companies give you comfort because you know that if anything goes wrong, you’ve got someone on your side working to fix it. They are full of helpful travel tips and recommended travel insurance coverage for those just-in-case moments. For any need (lost luggage, forgotten toiletry, etc.), simply reach out to your tour operator and they will assist you in making things right! Traveling on your own means having to solve these problems—alone. Wouldn’t it be better to have someone in your corner?

Redo att gå? (That’s “Ready to go?” in Swedish!)

Day 5 - Overnight ferry to Copenhagen

The morning and early afternoon is free in Oslo before boarding the overnight voyage to Copenhagen. Accommodation in seaside cabins with shower/WC.

Day 6 - Wonderful Copenhagen - small and intimate capital.

Copenhagen has a long history, and many delightful attractions and sights - you will never run out of something to see or to do. The city is small and cosy, an ideal way to explore the city is by foot, and public transport.

You will have a Copenhagen Card on hand allowing you to free travel on buses and trains within the cities metropolis, as well as free entrance to over 70 museums and attractions. Be sure to visit the new Aquarium if you are interested in design and fish! This new aquarium is included in the Copenhagen card.

If Viking ships and history interests you, consider a trip out to Roskilde Viking Ship Museum.  Or the Louisana Art Gallery for art lovers.

Be sure also to climb the tower of Church of our Savior - the spiral stairs were on the outside of the tower and it offers a great aerial view of the city! Not for the faint hearted though.

Days 7 - 8 - Charming Stockholm

In the morning catch a 6-hour train ride through the Swedish countryside to Stockholm. Sweden's capital is charming, vibrant and surrounded by beauty and water - hence its nickname, Venice of the North! Stockholm offers interesting museums and castles; the city offers a warm atmosphere and the old town has charming small alleyways boasting several famous restaurants.

On one of your afternoons here, be sure to make time for a visit to the ABBA museum with great interactive exhibits - a glass of champagne (for Dutch courage to get on stage & the pure fun of it) to accompany your tour is recommended! On the other hand, take the serious option & visit the Nobel Prize museum in the Old town.

Day 9 - Overnight ferry to Helsinki

The morning and early afternoon is free in Stockholm before boarding the overnight voyage to Helsinki through the magnificent Baltic Sea archipelago. Accommodation in seaside cabins with shower/WC.

Days 10 - 12 - Cool Helsinki with daytrip to Tallinn

You have two full days to explore this fabulous eastern Nordic capital. We recommend a walking tour of the city, which is known for its great mixture of neo-classical buildings, orthodox style churches and bars and restaurant scene. You have the opportunity to visit the Senate Square, Uspenski Cathedral, Parliament House, New Opera House, Sibelius Park & Monument and the Underground Temple. The included Helsinki card offers free entrance to almost 50 museums and use of public transportation. Need to take a break - head to the Kotiharjun Sauna, the last traditional wood-burning sauna in Helsinki.

On one of your days in Helsinki we have included return tickets for the ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn. Your trip to Tallinn would normally take a full day departing Helsinki at 07:30 in the morning and arriving back in Helsinki at 19:30. The ferry trip each way takes 2 hours and suddenly you are at the shores of this Eastern beauty. The infinitely charming medieval Old Town is well worth the visit. The cobblestone streets and medieval buildings are a whole world away from what you can expect from Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo, or Copenhagen. Tallinn feels distinctly Eastern, its architecture reminding the visitor of other beautiful Eastern European Old Towns, such as those of Prague, Krakow, or Riga. Through its history, culture, and location, Estonia connects Eastern Europe, Central Europe, and Scandinavia, offering something altogether different in comparison to your itinerary so far.

Be sure to also check out the option of a day trip from Helsinki to Porvoo on a heritage sailing boat.

Practical information about Scandinavian Hotels

  • Hotel rooms in Scandinavia are normally furnished with twin beds, which can be moved together to form a double bed or placed separately. Please note that single rooms are generally smaller than doubles, and are often equipped with a shower instead of a bath. Purpose-built triple or family rooms are likewise unusual in Scandinavian hotels. Whilst it is possible for 3 persons to share a room, this will normally be a double room with an extra bed, with correspondingly less space to move about in.
  • It is also unusual to have a porter at hotels to carry your luggage.
  • There is free wi-fi in many hotels in Scandinavia.
  • Unexpectedly, all forms of Scandinavian accommodation rarely provide tea and coffee facilities in their rooms. If you are lucky, a kettle will be supplied but nothing else. Please ask at reception for some provisions when you arrive or just carry a small selection from home.
  • Please also note that in Scandinavia - in particular, during winter - the included lunch will often be a hearty warm soup with bread.
  • More remote hotels in Lapland will offer dinner at an additional cost. In some spots, there will be limited choices else where. Generally, you get a very nice home-cooked Scandinavian dinner. However, you may sometimes find only one or two choices only for your main course.
  • In Scandinavia, it is normal for washing and laundry facilities to be in the basement. If you are staying in apartment type accommodation, check downstairs or ask for assistance.

Practical budgeting information before your departure to Norway

Practical budgeting information before your departure to norway:, budget surprises:.

Norway has a few items that typically surprise travellers when visiting Norway for the first time. Alcohol and luxury items are heavily taxed and therefore prices are higher than you would expect. On the other hand, necessities such as bread and milk, are taxed low and therefore are great value.

Alcohol import allowance into Norway:

We recommend that you bring all the alcohol you’re allowed to bring into the country when you arrive. There are many lovely parks and balconies where you can enjoy your duty free. However, be sure not to bring more than you’re allowed!

As of May 2014, the allowances according to Visit Norway are:

Alcoholic beverages: Minimum age: 18/ 20*

1 litre of beverages with more than 22% up to and including 60% alcohol per volume as well as 1½ litre with more than 2.5% up to and including 22% alcohol per volume or three litres with more than 2.5% up to and including 22% alcohol per volume and 2 litres of beer with more than 2.5 % or other beverages with more than 2.5% up to and including 4.7% alcohol per volume. This means that you may for example bring with you five litres of beer provided you do not have any other alcoholic beverages with you.

*For importing alcoholic beverages with more than 22% alcohol per volume the minimum age is 20.

It’s illegal to bring extra alcohol into Norway and can end up costing you. Another thing you should bring and not buy in Norway is razor blades. Good razor blades in Norway are expensive.

Self-catering in Norway

Written by Jayde Kincaid, who married a Norwegian, and was happily (albeit with some hesitation) introduced to a world of Norwegian every day food habits.

At 50 Degrees North, we want to encourage our travellers to try local Norwegian food & drink. This may seem difficult in Scandinavia in general without a large budget, and in particular Norway. Some of the more remote villages you might visit have limited restaurants or cafes, some of which can be pretty expensive. There is certainly no street food! One way to get about sampling local food is by self-catering. You will find plenty of friendly locals in the small town grocery stores and supermarkets who will be happy to help you picking out local ingredients. Just don’t be shy – ask! And, don’t rush – make your local small town shopping part of your holiday experience. Read the local notice boards, and enjoy an ice cream out the front when you have finished. It is what the locals do!

Note: Statoil cups - a good idea to save money as you drive around Norway: purcahse a Statoil (petrol station) metal cup and you get free refills of coffee, tea and hot chocolate at the Statoil stations.

Grocery shopping in remote or far flung Norway:

Norway has an extensive range of grocery stores, and in most small villages you will find at least one, if not two or three grocery stores. However, they do have limited opening hours, and except for ‘Bunnpris’, they are all closed on Sundays. You will see the weekend hours shown in brackets on the store sign out front. If you are arriving in a larger town, we do suggest you stock up with some staples before you head out into the mountains or on a coastal drive.

A few tips:

• Plastic bags are NOK1-2 and you will always need to pack your own shopping. • You can recycle your bottles and cans for a receipt that you can cash in. Recycling points are found in all stores. • Alcohol sold in food stores (mainly beer and cider) is restricted by government regulation to certain hours. This varies slightly, but on weekdays alcohol sales stop at 8pm regardless and on Saturdays at 6pm. Outside these hours and on Sundays you can only buy alcohol in licensed restaurants or bars. • Any alcohol over 4.7% can only be bought at special government controlled liquor store (Vinmonopolet). These are very rare in smaller remote towns and villages, so stock up before you leave the city.

Things to try from a general grocery store:

Meatballs or “meatcakes’: these come in all shapes, sizes and quality. They are generally really tasty and a bit better than what you find at IKEA. Also pick up a packet of dried ready-made brown sauce that goes with them. Be on the look out for Lingonberry sauce/jam, or even fresh lingonberries that you can use to make a fresh sauce (little red circular berries). Don’t add too much sugar, they are served quite tart.

If you want to try to make this brown sauce yourself, buy some ‘brunost’ (brown cheese), the required creams and follow the recipe below.

Hotdogs: known as ‘pølse’ in Norwegian, hot dogs are abundant in Norway. Cheap and cheerful – pølse is THE fast food of Norway. They are sold at service stations, newsagents, corner stores and fast food outlets. Pølse come with a dazzling variety of toppings and bread. Some of the pølse highlights would be the bacon wrapped ones, sprinkled with dried onion, mustards and mayonnaise. You will also find them wrapped in waffles (mostly in and around Fredrikstad) or the Norwegian pancake, ‘lompe’.

Note: there are strict requirements by the Food Safety commission for traditional pølse to be of the highest quality and they have even set requirements for what types of ingredients are allowed.

Like Norwegian beer, you will find seasonal pølse – Christmas pølse (Julepølse) is obviously found only in the lead up to the celebrations.

If you are planning to eat Norwegian style, use boil pølse on the stove and add to meals with potatoes and stew.

Note; steer away from tinned cheap pølse and meatballs.

Fish cakes: these also come in lots of variation and are generally served with a white sauce and lots of parsley. The Norwegians also use a basic white sauce on broccoli with cheese on top. These fish cakes are often found in fish shops, fried or steamed, ready to eat. A great fast snack.

Reindeer: we strongly suggest you try reindeer meat when you are travelling in the far north. It generally comes frozen, so look for finely cut reindeer meat in the freezer section. It is a more expensive option, but absolutely delicious albeit quite gamey. Be sure to get mushrooms, a small amount of brown cheese and rømme (crème fraiche). Fry it all up in a pan - a bit like a beef stroganoff. Serve with boiled potatoes or rice.

Mushrooms: if you are travelling in the chanterelle harvest season (mid/late August), be sure to try them. They are the yellow mushroom found in autumn. Or better still, have a look around the pine forests and pick some. Be sure to image search them before you head out so you know what to pick. They are really delicious with the brown cheese sauce and reindeer.

Salmon, prawns & fish: always be on the look out for a chance to buy fresh fish. Yes, it is possible to smooth talk a fisherman at the harbour. Or look for the local fish-kiosk or fish-shop. Be on the look out for small signs pointing you in the direction of fresh fish sales – ‘reker’ (shrimps, not prawns) or ‘fersk fisk’ (fresh fish) are the words you need. Norwegians are very proud of their shrimps – and of course completely justified. Their shrimps are small and tasty and harvested from the cool North Sea. Norwegians traditionally serve them with mayonnaise and lemon. Peel them and pop them on a fresh white slice of bread. Mayonnaise is layered on top with dill, pepper & salt.

Smoked Salmon: Norwegian smoked salmon is the best in the world hands down. Be sure to try all the different varieties you see – often, in larger supermarkets or delis, you can try before you buy.

Tubed ‘kaviar’ (caviar): this is a must try. It is cheap and perfect for the travellers pantry. This is what my husband craves like an Australian abroad would crave vegemite.

Norwegian pre-made dips and salads: the Norwegian supermarkets have a large range of premade salads and dips. They last quite a while and are good fillers for sandwiches. Our favourite are the cubed beetroot salad and the potato salads. They come in easy-to-carry and pack-up containers – perfect for picnics. Tubed mayonnaise is also handy for picnics.

‘Leverpostei’ (liver pate) in many variations can also be found in the supermarket. This pate is normally served on brown bread then topped with sliced red onions or sweet pickles. Protein rich and very tasty if you like pate – it is found on most Norwegian breakfast tables.

Yoghurt: now – this is an interesting one. Norwegian yoghurt comes in a variety of styles - some can be very runny, sour and low fat. There are varying names/codes for each sort. You might like to check with a local when you are buying yoghurt to be sure you are getting what you want. Some of the yoghurt comes as though it is milk, in normal milk cartons - sour runny yoghurt is NOT nice in your coffee.

Bread: the Norwegian supermarket bread generally comes un-cut. You can either cut it in the shop – ask for help the first time you do it. They have industrial bread cutting machines near the bakery section. The bread can be quite plain in the main supermarkets so be on the look out for boutique bakeries in the larger towns if you enjoy fancy bread. Also keep an eye out for the Norwegian flatbread, Lefse, which is similar to Mexican tortillas. Usually served with butter and sugar, sometimes cinnamon too. Occasionally made with potato.

Waffles: Norwegian waffle stalls are similar to the sausage sizzle or hot dog stand. It is the most common fundraising or community building food product. Don’t expect sickly sweet jams or whipped cream – you will find these fresh chewy waffles served with sour cream and home made tart berry jams. Never go past one!

Chocolate: we recommend that you try the ‘FREIA’ milk chocolate during your stay. It melts in your mouth.

Berries: if you travel in early autumn (mid/late August) this is berry season. Forest berries that is. Ask a local and head up into the hills or forest in search for berries. You may find; blueberries, lingonberries, rasberries and if you are up north or in the central mountains; the rare yellow cloudberries.

Norwegian Farm Produce:

On a self-drive journey, always be on the look out for small farm shops or stands along the road. Things you cannot drive past:

Strawberries: if you are travelling in the strawberry season – you MUST try Norwegian strawberries. They are seriously amazing. Grown in the nutritious earth that has the chance to rejuvenate through a long winter.

_And if you go past a self-pick strawberry farm, put everything else on hold and enter!  Norwegians wait all year for this event. _

New potatoes: be on the look out for new season potatoes – they are often sold in little stands beside the road. Often on an honesty basis; i.e. grab a bag and put the money in an allocated tin.

CLASSIC RECIPE:

Basic Brown Cheese Recipe – can be used with meatballs, reindeer, with added mushrooms. • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 tablespoons flour • 3⁄4 cup light cream • 1⁄2 cup chicken broth (optional - just use water if you cannot find this) • 1 cup shredded gjetost or brown goats cheese • 3⁄4 cup rømme (crème fraiche) • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley or 2 tablespoons fresh dill

Method: Using the meat dish that has been browned off, remove as much oil from the pan as possible and blend in butter and flour. Remove from heat and blend in light cream. Add chicken broth, bring to boil, stirring and cooking until thickened. Mix in Gjetost cheese. Turn heat low. Blend some of the sauce into the rømme (crème fraiche), then return all to sauce. Add chopped parsley or fresh dill.

Happy shopping and cooking!

Restaurants to try in Oslo

Tietse Stelma

Oslo restaurants, in the tradition of the New Nordic Food Movement, have the depth and sophistication you would expect from the capital city of Norway. Read our options for places to try.

In Oslo you find restaurants in all price categories and genres.

Norwegian cuisine in its traditional form is based largely on the raw materials readily available in Norway and its mountains, wilderness and coast. It differs in many respects from its continental counterparts with a stronger focus on game and fish. Many of the traditional dishes are results of using conserved materials, with respect to the long winters.

Here is a few of our favourites in Oslo's wide variety of restaurants:

  • Lofoten Fish Restaurant, traditional and quaint with the broths and creamy fish options you would expect in Norway
  • Restaurant Kontrast , near Mathallen, 1 Michelin-star restaurant with a moderate price tag (pictured above)
  • Topp Hem , Norwegian, seasonal and local from nearby farms served as share-platters
  • Nedre Foss Gård , an old historic farm in Oslo that is now a refurbished (after a fire in 2016) restaurant/ bar with and outdoor courtyard. Nedre Foss Gård means Lower Waterfall (Foss) Farm.
  • Theatercafeen
  • Solsiden Restaurant -De Fem Stuer, is located in the old wooden building from 1894 and is one of Oslo's best restaurant set in a great surrounding on top of hill overlooking Oslo
  • Ekebergrestauranten
  • Engebret Café
  • Frognerseteren Restaurant: Finstua

For less expensive restaurants, head to the Grunerlokka district . It is great place to take in the city's pulse in the city's more ethnically diverse east. In this once working-class area, the vital signs of budget Oslo are most apparent, with low-cost restaurants, second-hand clothes shops and student bars grouped around the streets Markveien and Thorvald Meyers Gate. Among them, the café bar Fru Hagen has a legion of blond locals seeking cheap eats. On a Sunday evening, when much of the city is almost deserted, Fru Hagen is heaving.

When in Oslo try these local cuisines:

Smoked Salmon or Røkt Laks

Kjøttboller - Meatballs

Krumkake - waffle-like pancake, which are then filled with whipped cream

The Most Beautiful Places in Scandinavia

Most beautiful places in Scandinavia

A few things come to mind when we think of Scandinavia: hygge , modern, minimalist furniture, avant garde dining , the Northern Lights. But above all, the countries of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark make us think of staggering natural and architectural beauty. (Some people include Iceland, Finland, and the Faroe Islands under the umbrella term of “Scandinavia," but we're sticking strictly to the Merriam-Webster definition here.) We're talking ancient castles , snowy forests, historic city centers, and countless fjords. Thanks to the rise in popularity of stopover programs with airlines like Norwegian Air and Icelandair, these northern stretches of Europe are more accessible than ever—so what are you waiting for? To inspire your next trip, here are 19 of the most beautiful places in Scandinavia.

Located on the Jutland Peninsula, Aarhus was named both the European Region of Gastronomy and European Capital of Culture for 2017. Denmark's second-largest city has three Michelin-starred restaurants and landmarks like the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum art museum, which sports an iconic rainbow walkway.

Nimb Hotel, Copenhagen

Walking into Tivoli Gardens already feels like stepping inside a fairytale—a feeling that grows exponentially once you stumble upon the palatial Nimb Hotel . Built as a castle in 1909, this hotel manages to preserve its grand Moorish past (see: the mosaic-clad pool and Turkish hammam) while embracing modern-day Scandinavian style, complete with clean decor and bath products all made in Denmark.

Nyhavn, Copenhagen

Mons Klint Denmark

These white chalk cliffs stretch for more than three miles along the eastern coast of Møn, a Danish island in the Baltic Sea. Ribe Denmark

Dating back 1,307 years, Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark—and in all of Scandinavia. The city was established in the early eighth century, and while you can't find any structures that ancient around today, the picturesque cathedrals and half-timbered houses on cobblestone streets are well worth a visit.

Atlantic Ocean Road

Often considered one of the world's best road trips , driving the Atlantic Ocean Road on Norway's western coast is almost like signing up for an amusement park ride, complete with roller coaster dips and eight thrilling bridges. Ease up on the gas a little to enjoy your beautiful surroundings—you might even spot seals and whales swimming in the adjacent ocean.

Arctic Hideaway

The Arctic Hideaway

While it's becoming increasingly hard to go completely off the grid these days, Norway has you covered with The Arctic Hideaway , a hotel located on its own island (Fordypningsrommet) above the Arctic Circle. The sleek accommodations and gorgeous setting make the island one seriously dreamy vacation spot, bookable on Airbnb. The cabins' floor-to-ceiling windows offer panoramic views of the Northern Lights , letting you cross the activity off your bucket list while sitting indoors under a warm blanket.

Geiranger Fjord Norway

Geirangerfjord

Situated in southwestern Norway, the UNESCO-recognized Geirangerfjord in southwestern Norway is among the most scenic fjords anywhere in the world. Its beautiful landscape features steep, 2,000-foot rock walls, dense forests, and numerous waterfalls. You can get the best views from the deck of a cruise ship, but another great option is to drive the Geiranger-to-Trollstigen route, stopping overnight at the gorgeous Juvet Landscape Hotel .

Bergen

No trip to Norway is complete without a stop in Bergen, the country's second-most populated town and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe . The postcard-perfect town is known for its scenic harbor, colorful rows of wooden houses, and surrounding mountain range (known as the Seven Mountains).

Prekestolen Norway

Preikestolen

Easily one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country, Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) is a rock platform located nearly 2,000 feet above the surrounding fjord. Serving as a sort of natural observation deck, the landmark lets hikers take in unencumbered views of the fjord's vertical cliffs and granite formations. Just be sure to visit sooner than later—geologists say the platform could be at risk of collapsing .

Oslo Norway

While much of Norway is all about the picturesque coastal towns and stunning natural sites, the capital city of Oslo stands out with its sleek skyline. Dine at the Mathallen Oslo food hall, view contemporary artwork at the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, and explore its iconic Scandinavian architecture via bike —by far one of the best ways to tour the city.

Trolltunga Norway

Most Pinterest or Instagram users have seen a photo of Trolltunga (Troll's Tongue), Norway's undeniable social media darling. The protruding rock sits about 2,300 feet above Lake Ringedalsvatnet, tempting travelers to inch out to the edge to snap a photo.

Gamla Stan, Stockholm

Stockholm is built for walking and biking, and there's no better place for a leisurely stroll than Gamla Stan, the historic center of the city. The narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with cozy boutiques and restaurants, and you can see Stockholm's 13th-century roots throughout the cathedrals and old merchant houses.

ArcticBath Hotel Sweden

Arctic Bath Hotel

The Arctic Bath Hotel made a splash when it opened in early 2019, thanks in large part to the fact that it floats on the Lule River in Swedish Lapland . The main building's design draws inspiration from the woods, with a criss-crossed log exterior and paneled wood interiors, and the theme is further emphasized among the 12 cabins lining the river. Take a plunge in the open-air Arctic pool, then immediately warm up in one of the adjacent saunas or with a cup of mulled wine in the restaurant.

Abisko Sweden

Abisko National Park

Home to Scandinavia's largest lake, Abisko is also known for its flowering Abiskodalen valley, rushing rapids, and accessible nature trails. The park, established in 1909, is considered one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights , thanks to its clear weather and coordinates.

Stockholm Archipelago

Stockholm Archipelago

The Stockholm Archipelago is the largest archipelago in Sweden, with tens of thousands of tiny islands stretching some 40 miles off of Stockholm, and a popular vacation spot for locals during the summer holidays. The best way to see the islands is by hopping on a ferry in Stockholm; hitch a ride to admire all the red wooden holiday homes, and enjoy some fishing or foraging on the shores.

IceHotel Sweden

Icehotel, Jukkasjärvi

Located in Jukkasjärvi (population: 600) in far northern Sweden, the aptly named Icehotel originally opened in 1992 as little more than a glorified igloo and has since become a year-round, 20-suite hotel with an art gallery and bar.

Visby Sweden

Visby, the only town on the island of Gotland, was once a major Viking trading settlement. Today, it's a walled town with UNESCO World Heritage honors. Take a walking tour of the city, making time to stop and learn about the island's history at the Gotland Museum. Whatever you do, don't miss trying a saffranspannkaka (or three): this Gotland specialty, a saffron pancake topped with fresh cream and salmonberries, dates back to the 18th century.

Many Scandinavian cities offer brilliant seaside fun. Sørenga in Oslo pictured.

Summer in Scandinavia: five eco-friendly ideas to holiday like a local

The essence of a Nordic summer is to lean into a slower pace of life and embrace nature, from staying in a Swedish summer house to gentle canoe tours in Finland

Oslo: summer in the city

With swimmable harbours in Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki and across Denmark’s cities, not to mention plenty of ways to enjoy the sea, from kayaking to urban fishing, there’s often a seaside air to Nordic cities in summer, and especially in Oslo.

One of the best summer activities is to tour the Oslofjord and its archipelago by boat – pack a picnic and set sail in search of hidden swimming spots and colourful island houses. Brim Explorer is one of the best options: an eco-friendly boat company offering silent tours powered by an electric motor (tours from £44). You can also show your love for the water by joining Mad Goats in their fjord clean-up operations every Sunday; participation gives you access to one of their saunas for free and a free burger at the end.

There’s a growing art scene to discover around the harbour. The National Museum is showing an unmissable exhibition by Sápmi artist Britta Marakatt-Labba focused on the environmental struggle and climate issues seen from an indigenous perspective, until August. Afterwards, stroll around the harbour promenade past the opera house, and visit the Munch Museum . There is a new family-friendly beach, Operastranda, by the Opera House this year; it’s also great to swim at the Sørenga seawater pool . Stay at the eco-conscious Oslo Guldsmeden , a Nordic-Balinese hotel in the Vika district from £100 a night.

Explore Denmark ’s sunniest isle

Balka is one of the best beaches on Bornholm.

Bornholm is officially the Danes’ favourite holiday spot (as voted for last year in the Danish Travel Awards). Reachable by bus and ferry or hydrofoil from Copenhagen, it’s known as the country’s sunshine island: Svaneke, a charming harbour town on the west coast, is the sunniest spot in the whole of Denmark.

There’s no need for a car: you can get around relatively easily by bike and bus to explore fishing villages and small towns such as Gudhjem, known for its national cooking competition , and sunny Svaneke, in search of the best ice-cream, smoked herring and locally brewed beer. Bornholm has an artist colony vibe reminiscent of parts of Cornwall and is well known for its ceramics. You can find small workshops and galleries dotted around its villages, and especially in the town of Nexø, where there is a ceramics school. Beaches are wide, sandy and beautiful – especially child-friendly, dune-backed Dueodde, which Lonely Planet recently listed as one of the 20 best beaches in Europe .

New this year, Eco Beach Camp offers glamping from about £150 a night (sleeping two to four) on the beach just steps from the island’s Michelin-starred Kadeau restaurant, known for its focus on hyper-local, sustainable food. Or rent a summer house through firms including Novasol and Dancenter where rates start from about £300 for a week’s stay. It’s expected that you’ll bring basics with you, including bed linen.

Norway’s Arctic hiking route

The Nordlandsruta takes in a magnificent array of Norwegian landscapes.

Culture and nature come together on Norway’s longest hiking route this summer. The 400-mile Nordlandsruta , which runs along the Norwegian-Swedish border, will be joining in the celebrations to mark the Arctic city of Bodø’s year in the spotlight as one of 2024’s European Capitals of Culture. There are a range of artist-led events in cabins along the trail, and activities include poetry and portrait workshops and a mobile perfumery making scents from the herbs that hikers pick along the route.

Evening entertainment includes campfire cooking, improv theatre and Sápmi lassoo throwing. It also plays into another key Nordic travel theme: friluftsliv , a love of the great outdoors. Norwegians love to hike and there is an extensive network of trails, with hiking cabins along them, across the country.

It’s a beautiful hike – whether you’re in the region for the celebrations or not – passing through the Arctic Circle, Laponian Area world heritage site , national parks and Sápmi cities. From meadows filled with wildflowers to snow-capped mountains, reindeer-herding plateaux and raging rivers, it has all the drama you’d expect of this northern landscape. There are 43 unstaffed huts on the route – you’ll need a key from Norwegian trekking organisation DNT to use them.

To walk the whole route would take around six weeks, but it’s broken down into eight smaller stages for those with less time. For ramblers with an eye on reindeer herding and Sápmi husbandry, the 57-mile stretch from Raudlia to Susendalen treks across two valleys and past the hat-shaped Hatten mountain while the 45-mile section from Bolna to Umbukta skirts the sacred Sápmi mountain of Auronasen, silver mines and a glacier. Weekend hikes along the trail are also possible from Narvik and Bodø.

Finland’s peaceful waterways

Kainuu is one of the most tranquil regions in Europe.

If you like lakes, islands and trees, Finland is the place for you – it is the most forested country in Europe and has more bodies of water than any other country in the world . In the Kainuu region in the east of the country, it’s easy to get away from the crowds for pure immersion in Nordic nature.

Nature Travels offers self-guided canoe tours in the region where you can camp wild along the route, fish for your supper and go at your own pace. The pick of the bunch is a remote adventure on the Tar Route (from £154 per person, for three nights/four days, based on two people, including all equipment and transfers to start point), the historic route once used to transport tar to the Baltic Sea. Instead of tar, your cargo will be just yourselves, your tent and enough food for a four to eight-day tour of quiet waterways, short and easily bypassed rapids, and protected islands.

Along the route you might spot moose, foxes, owls or even eagles. Stop to fish for your dinner, cook it on an open fire and retire to a lean-to shelter or tent in the evening. Look out, too, for island saunas, dotted along the route, where you can ease the tension in your back and arms after a hard day’s paddle. Don’t forget to pack insect repellent: Finland’s forests are known for their pesky flies.

This route commonly starts from Kuhmo, accessed by train and bus from Helsinki, while Helsinki itself can be reached by ferry from Stockholm if you prefer not to fly.

Stay in a Swedish summer house

Landsort village on the island of Öja.

It’s traditional in this part of the world to spend at least part of the summer in a “summer house” (actually more of a simple cabin) in nature. The essence of summer house life is leaning into a slower pace of life: read a book under a tree, bake a cake, a gentle walk. It’s about living in harmony with nature, too, and embracing the joys it offers, including sea swimming, fishing, hiking and boating.

The Stockholm archipelago is one of the most accessible and popular summer house destinations. Access is via one of the many public ferries (one-way trips from the city pier cost up to £14 depending on the location). It’s as easy as taking a bus.

The region is protected by the Archipelago Foundation , which preserves public access to land and water in the area, and has a wide range of characterful accommodation spread all over the islands. They include a 19th-century former customs house on the remote and rocky island of Huvudskär, remade into a rustic youth hostel (room rates from £186 for a four-bed room), as well as summer cottages on the activity-packed southern island of Utö, where two-person cabins start at around £338 for a week in high season.

Summer cottages usually require you to bring bed linen. Depending on which island you choose, you might need to bring all your supplies for the week too. Peak season for Scandinavia is typically July – travel in August for slightly reduced rates.

The Trip Documents provide instructions for airport check-in and for your arrival in Scandinavia. Relax on your transatlantic flight with the assurance that Image Tours has taken care of all the details.

DAY 2 - DENMARK . . Arrival at Copenhagen Airport.

Refer to the “Arrival Instructions” in the Trip Documents for directions on where and when to meet your tour manager for the transfer to your Copenhagen Airport area hotel. During the “Welcome to Scandinavia” dinner, get acquainted with your fellow travelers. (Dinner)

DAY 3 - DENMARK . . Copenhagen.

This morning, a local guide will introduce you to the treasures of Copenhagen, including Amalienborg Palace (residence of the queen and royal family), Frederiks Kirke (also known as the Marble Church), and Copenhagen’s trademark statue of the Little Mermaid. Following your city tour, Copenhagen’s Nyhavn district is the perfect setting for an independent lunch amid the colorful townhouses and historic wooden ships that line the canal. The afternoon is free to continue your exploration of Copenhagen or join your tour manager for an optional Danish Castles excursion (see Optional Excursions). This evening, entrance to the Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen’s famous amusement park and pleasure garden, is included. Take in the vibrant nightlife during an independent dinner at one of the park’s many restaurants. (Breakfast)

DAY 4 - DENMARK . . Copenhagen - Odense – Aalborg – Hirtshals.

Denmark is made up of the Jutland Peninsula as well as more than 400 islands, with Zealand and Funen as the largest. Upon departing the Danish capital, located on Zealand, travel west to Funen via the 18 kilometer (11.25 mile) Storebælt (Great Belt) Fixed Link, consisting of two bridges and a tunnel. By late morning, arrive in Odense for an included visit to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum. Born in 1805, from humble beginnings, Andersen went on to enormous fame for his beloved fairy tales including “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Princess and the Pea,” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” The afternoon stop is in Aalborg, one of Denmark's oldest towns. Continue north on the Jutland Peninsula to the port city of Hirtshals, where you will embark on an overnight cruise to Bergen, Norway. Dinner will be served on-board. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 5 - NORWAY . . Bergen – Stalheim.

Wake up to the invigorating breeze of the North Sea and arrive in Bergen’s harbor by mid-day. Bergen is one of Europe’s oldest port cities, established as a center of trade in the 12th century. Bergen’s old wharf, known as Bryggen, is a reminder of the town’s importance as part of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire. Wander among the historic row houses where you will find potters, jewelers and leather crafters, as well as restaurants and cafés. Departing Bergen, take in the pure Norwegian scenery on the way to your hotel in Stalheim. Before your included dinner, explore the grounds and take photos of the hotel’s aesthetically unique location. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 6 - NORWAY . . Flåm Railway – Fjord Cruise – Stalheim.

Spectacular vistas abound today! Experience a one-hour journey on the scenic Flåm Railway, taking you past mountains, waterfalls and stunning landscapes. The railway itself is an engineering marvel, descending 2,844 feet as you approach Flåm. Pause in Flåm to enjoy a relaxing independent lunch and explore the village shops or the railway museum. This afternoon, board a fjord steamer for a two-hour cruise through the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord, the world's narrowest fjord and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Disembark at Gudvangen where the motor coach will be waiting to return you to the Stalheim hotel for dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 7 - NORWAY . . Borgund – Oslo.

This morning, visit the Borgund Stave Church. Made of wood and coated in a unique natural tar, stave churches dotted the countryside of Norway during the Middle Ages. Built around 1180, Borgund is exceptionally well preserved and is one of the most distinctive stave churches still standing. From Borgund, lush wooded areas, hills, lakes and resort villages complement the journey towards Oslo. Make an afternoon stop before reaching your Oslo hotel for check-in and an included dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 8 - NORWAY . . Oslo.

A local city guide will accompany you and provide insight into Oslo’s scenic waterfront, fjord-influenced landscape and Norwegian culture. The fascinating Vigeland Sculpture Park is included in your orientation tour. You’ll also see landmarks such as the Parliament building, Royal Palace, and Oslo City Hall — venue for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. The rest of the day is yours to discover all that Oslo has to offer. Aker Brygge, the revitalized waterfront district, is a pleasant place for an independent lunch and for further exploration. Considerations for how to spend your afternoon leisure time include touring the Akershus Fortress, studying intriguing works of art at the Munch Museum, or joining the optional Bygdoy Peninsula excursion (see Optional Excursions), including the Fram and the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. Dinner is independent this evening, providing the opportunity to experience Oslo’s rich culinary culture. (Breakfast)

DAY 9 - SWEDEN . . Stockholm.

Today is a full day of travel from Oslo to Stockholm. Take in the beautiful scenery as you pass by rich farmlands, expansive pine forests, rustic terrain and pristine lakes. Stop for an independent lunch in one of the small towns along the way. Dinner will be served after check-in at your Stockholm area hotel. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 10 - SWEDEN . . Stockholm.

Start the day with an overview of city landmarks by motor coach, followed by a walking tour through Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town. Situated on Stadsholmen Island and two islets, Gamla Stan dates back to the 13th century and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and well-preserved Gothic buildings including the Royal Palace, Stockholm Cathedral, and the Riddarholmen Church (one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm). For your independent lunch in Gamla Stan, try a Swedish smörgåsbord at one of the many restaurants. The afternoon is free for independent sightseeing or join your tour manager for an optional Drottningholm Palace excursion (see Optional Excursions). This evening, return to the Stockholm city center for an independent dinner in the lively and bustling Swedish capital. (Breakfast)

DAY 11 - SWEDEN . . Stockholm - Skansen & Overnight Cruise to FINLAND.

Stroll along Stockholm's harbor or join your tour manager for the optional Vasa Museum excursion (see Optional Excursions). By lunchtime, transfer to Skansen, the world’s first open-air museum. Founded in 1891, Skansen features 150 Swedish farms and dwellings illustrating the different social conditions in which people lived between the 16th and the early 20th centuries. Staff members are dressed in period clothing and provide insight into daily life over the past 500 years. The museum is also home to the Stockholm Zoo, which features native Nordic animals. Enjoy an independent lunch in Skansen before transferring to the harbor to check-in for the overnight cruise to Helsinki, Finland. Explore the ship before dining on a lavish buffet dinner. Spend the rest of your evening experiencing all that the ship has to offer including tax free shopping, musical entertainment and dancing. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 12 - FINLAND . . Helsinki.

While you have breakfast on deck, the island-dotted shores of Finland come into view. The cruise ship will dock in Helsinki by mid-morning. Board the motor coach and proceed to the city center where a local guide will join you to share some of the city’s most attractive sites including the Rock Church, Senate Square, Uspenski Cathedral and Helsinki Cathedral. For your free time this afternoon, Helsinki’s open-air markets sell traditional foods and local treats, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs. After check-in at your hotel, continue your exploration of the city during an independent dinner. (Breakfast)

DAY 13 - ESTONIA . . Tallinn.

Transfer to the Helsinki ferry terminal for a two-hour crossing over the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn, Estonia. Tallinn’s Old Town is one of the best maintained medieval cities in Europe. A local guide will take you on a walking tour through the winding cobbled streets of the Old Town. This well-preserved 13th-century city is divided into two distinct parts: Toompea Hill, which was home to the gentry that lorded over the countryside; and the Lower Town, where merchants traded goods from around the world on the Town Hall Square. Find a quiet restaurant in the Old Town for an independent dinner or participate in the optional Olde Hansa Dinner excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast)

DAY 14 - ESTONIA . . Tallinn – Pärnu & LATVIA . . Riga.

Depart Tallinn and travel to Pärnu, a medieval city which also happens to be Estonia’s ultimate summer holiday destination due to its romantic laid-back atmosphere, sandy beaches, spas and restaurants. Stop at a local market to purchase snack items for a picnic along the beach promenade, or enjoy lunch at one of the sidewalk cafés. This afternoon, continue your journey into Latvia, where you will spend the next two nights in the capital city of Riga. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 15 - LATVIA . . Riga.

Riga is the largest of the three Baltic capitals and boasts a skyline of Gothic spires mingled with one of the world’s richest collections of Art Nouveau architecture. A local guide will point out some of the highlights of Riga including the Castle, St. Peter’s Church and Dome Cathedral. Following the city tour, the remainder of the day is at your leisure. For lunch, wind your way through the enormous Central Market offering savory sausage, cheese, black bread, smoked fish and other local favorites. Or, enjoy a hearty meal at a friendly bistro. You may wish to try the mysterious Riga Black Balsam, a traditional Latvian herbal liqueur made with natural ingredients mixed in pure vodka. The Old Town is within walking distance and is an excellent place to soak up the local sights and flavors during an independent dinner. (Breakfast)

DAY 16 - LITHUANIA . . Vilnius.

Your mid-day destination today is Lithuania’s capital city. The Old Town of Vilnius bustles with fairy-tale charm and offers quaint cafés and restaurants for an independent lunch. Begin your afternoon on a walking tour with a local guide who will provide valuable insight into the city’s history and culture amid Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. Following the city tour, take some additional time to browse the boutiques and flower vendors before transferring to the hotel for a “Farewell Dinner” with your fellow tour participants. Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
