Are you planning to visit Ghana? You might need a visa. If you have already confirmed that you need a visa, then you may also need an invitation letter. An invitation letter gives the visa officer a clear statement of your purpose for visiting Ghana. It gives them the duration of your stay and your proposed place of stay.

What is required in the Invitation Letter

A letter of invitation from sponsor (either host company or individual) explaining the relationship to the applicant and the purpose of travel to Ghana. In addition, the letter must indicate the length of stay, place of stay, (including full residential address and telephone number), and contact information. A copy of the host’s Passport must be included, and residency permit if not a Ghanaian citizen.

Hi Your Passport needs to be valid. You don’t need to have a lot of money. She will take care of that. You can still write her a letter of invitation.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR GHANA

All visitors to Ghana must be in possession of a valid passport or legal travel documents.

All visitors entering Ghana must have valid entry visas or, in the case of Commonwealth nationals, entry permits issued by a Ghana diplomatic mission or consulate abroad or any other visa issuing authority mandated by the Ghana Government to act on its behalf. (ECOWAS nationals and those of other countries with which the Government of Ghana has specific bilateral agreements, are exempted).

All travelers above nine (9) months coming into or transiting through Ghana are required to have been vaccinated against Yellow Fever

CONDITIONS FOR THE ISSUE OF VISA

Visas may be granted to personnel of international organizations, agencies; individuals visiting Ghana for tourism, study, business or on transit basis. There are two types of visas: Single entry and Multiple entries. Single entry visas are valid for a period of three months and must be utilized within three months from the date of issue. This type of visa can be used only one time.

Multiple entry visas are valid for more than three months, and the duration is at the discretion of the Consular officer and should/cannot not be challenged. A multiple visa can be used multiple times within its duration or validity. Visitors travelling on Business are required to furnish evidence of the fact, such as a letter from their firm, while those travelling at the invitation of Ghanaian nationals/residents, or Ghanaian institutions should furnish a letter of invitation from their hosts. Tourism Applicants must provide a letter of invitation from their host in Ghana. They are required to provide a roundtrip ticket; and show proof of sufficient funds for the duration of their stay in the country. Prospective employees may undertake employment within the authorized immigrant quota. Emergency visas may be issued on arrival at entry points to travelers from countries where there are no Ghanaian diplomatic missions or consular representation, but such applications must confirm with the nearest Embassy or be authorized by the Director of the Immigration Service through their sponsors before they depart for Ghana. Applications for extension of duration of stay must be made through the Director of the Ghana Immigration Service for consideration. Visitors may be allowed to extend their stay for a period deemed fit, if the Ghana Immigration Service is satisfied that such visitors have sufficient reason and means of financial support. Persons who enter the country as visitors are not permitted to take up employment even if there happens to be a vacancy on the Immigrant Quota of a prospective employer. Professionals (doctors, lawyers, nurses, etc.), are required to provide particulars of their qualifications in order that the eligibility of their registration may be determined. Travelers are strongly advised to ensure that they have all the necessary documents before arriving in Ghana

All visa applications  MUST  be completed online at www.ghanaembassydc.org.

Procedure/s

• On the website, www.ghanaembassydc.org, click on VISA & PASSPORTS, and click on visa and passport application to complete the form.
• There are 6 Steps to the visa application form
• The questions with the Red asterisks are mandatory. If there is no red asterisks (*) you can put a checkmark on the NA box on the right hand side..
• After completing the visa application, download and print the application.
• Mail the passport with the printed copy of the visa application, one (1) current passport size photographs and all the required supporting documents to the Embassy.
• Please print your payment receipts. ( Visa Application fee and Return Postage) and attach to your visa application form
• For  Children: Parents must complete the child’s visa application form, add the 1 passport size photograph, and the required supporting documents, which are: a Photocopy of the child’s birth certificate; a signed and notarized consent letter by both parents, as well as copies of both parents’ picture IDs.
• Your package should be mailed to  either one of the following addresses (Regular or Expedited Service)

PROHIBITED IMMIGRANTS

The under-mentioned categories are Prohibited Immigrants:

A person of unsound mind.

A person declared by medical personnel as medically unsound.

A person considered to be a security risk.

A person against whom there is a deportation order in force.

A person who has been sentenced in a foreign country for extradition under the Extradition Act 1960.

INOCULATIONS

All travelers above nine (9) months old coming into Ghana are required to have been vaccinated against Yellow fever.

Yellow fever is an acute viral infection transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes. It is endemic and epidemic in several countries in Africa, South America and Caribbean Islands. Case fatality rate is high in classic yellow fever epidemics. There is no curative medical treatment but however highly preventable by vaccination. The International Health Regulations IHR2005 involves the following:

Ghana is one of the countries at the risk of Yellow Fever transmission, hence the need for all travelers (including those coming from countries with no risk to yellow fever) to Ghana to have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate or records indicating their protection from yellow fever.

As a result, Health officials at all ports of entry carry out vigorous checks on travel documents with respect to Yellow fever vaccination certificates in accordance with Article 36 and Annex 6 as depicted above.

Ghanaian embassies generally ask for documents that seem confusing, especially to travelers that apply for the first time for a visa. A visa letter of invitation Ghana is among the documents that most first time visa applicants have difficulties understanding its purpose.

Visa Invitation Letters for Ghana

A Visa Invitation Letter for a Ghanaian is a letter that the applicant has to submit to the Ghanaian embassy or consulate where they are applying for a visitor visa and needs to be addressed either to the applicant or to the consular officer, confirming that they will accommodate the applicant in their home for the whole period of their stay in the country where the host lawfully resides.

What are the important details which should be in a Visa Invitation Letter?

The visa invitation letter must contain the following information about the host:

• Date of birth
• Telephone number
• Type of home (owned / rent house / flat / room)
• Host’s residential status in the host country

On the other side, the letter must also include the following information about the guest:

• Full name as shown on their International Passport
• The person’s address and telephone number
• Relationship between the host and the guest
• The purpose of the trip (friendly visit, holiday, wedding, birthday party.)
• Exact entry date and exit date
• If the letter is addressed to the guest do not make it sound too official. It is better if it sounds more personal and friendlier rather than formal, so that the consular officer can have a better sight of the relationship between the host and the guest.

Who can provide a Visa Invitation Letter?

The person providing the visa inviation letter must fulfill the following requirements in order for the letter of invitation to be valid:

• Must be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the Ghana
• Must be your family member / relative or friend, boyfriend / girlfriend
• Must have a registered place (appartment or house) in Ghana
• Must have enough room for the applicant or the applicant and his or her family members if the applicant is travelling to Ghana with his or her family
• On some occations, the Letter of Invitation is not required by the Ghanaian embassy, but it is strongly recommended to submit one even if not required.

Steps to Applying for Ghanaian visa To apply for a Ghanaian visa follow the steps given below:

• Figure out what type of Ghanaian visa you need.
• Find out where you should lodge your application.

Common reasons why your Ghanaian visa application got rejected include:

• Lack of funds – you must be able to afford your trip Ghana and you must provide documents to show that you can.
• Proof of accommodation not provided – you must be able to show where you will be staying in Ghana and you can easily do this by providing a hotel reservation in Ghana.
• The visa officer thinks you will not return to your home country – you must make it clear that you intend to leave Ghana and return to your home country before the expiry of your visa. You can do this by providing documents that show you have ties where you live, such as an employment letter or proof that you own your home etc.
• No proof of residence – you must be able to prove that you can live in the country of your residence legally, so you must provide proof of residence.

The Ghana Visitor/Tourist visa is a travel document that allows foreign nationals to enter the country for short-term stays to engage in tourist activities, attend cultural events, or visit friends and family. The tourist visa is available as a single-entry or multiple-entry visa. Applying for a Ghana Visa

If you’ve been following my crazy Aeroplan adventure , you’ll know I spent last weekend in Accra, Ghana. It was my first-ever trip to Africa, and to say it was an eye-opening and illuminating trip would be in no way doing it justice. 

Many African countries have visa requirements for Canadians looking to visit on business or pleasure, and for the moment, Ghana is one of the countries that requires a full visa application in advance of your trip. While the Ghanaian government indicated in 2017 that the country plans on introducing e-Visas, that procedure hasn’t yet materialized as of the time of writing. 

In this post I wanted to share my (relatively straightforward) experience getting a Ghana visa, in the hopes that it’ll helpful for any of my fellow Canadian travellers looking to visit. 

The Ghana Visa

The Ghana visa is handled by the Ghana High Commission to Canada , which has an embassy in Ottawa and a consular office in Toronto. The applications can be made in-person at these offices, although if you live outside of these two cities, you’ll likely want to schedule extra time to apply by post. 

There are six different types of visas available, each of which can be obtained with Normal or Express service. On paper, Normal service takes five business days while Express services takes two business days. However, it’s worth noting that when I applied via Express service, I was told to pick up my visa on the very next business day, so the processing times might be a little faster than what’s advertised.

The visa fee schedule is as below. In addition to regular visas for stays of up to 30 days, you can also get transit visas for a two-day stay or less, which would be suitable should you decide to schedule a 24-hour layover in Accra. 

Before You Apply

You’ll need to prepare a few important documents to include with your visa application form. These include:

Your passport, with at least six months’ validity until the expiration date and at least two empty pages

Two 35mm x 45mm passport photos

Payment with money order addressed to the Ghana High Commission (cash, credit, and debit are not accepted)

A photocopy of the biodata page of your passport

Proof of yellow fever immunization

Copy of full flight itinerary

Invitation letter from host in Ghana, or hotel reservation

Copy of Ghana government-issued photo ID of host in Ghana*, or copy of passport biodata page and resident permit of a non-Ghanaian host residing in Ghana

Prepaid self-addressed courier envelope (if applying by post)

In addition, if you’re applying on behalf of a minor, you’ll also have to include the minor’s birth certificate, in addition to a letter of consent signed by, and copies of the passport biodata pages of, both parents or legal guardians.

The above is all quite self-explanatory, although the point about the Ghana government-issued photo ID bears some clarification. If you’ll be staying with a Ghanaian host, then the host should provide his or her Ghana government-issued photo ID. If your host is a non-Ghanaian residing in Ghana, then they should provide copies of their passport and resident permit.

Meanwhile, if you’re staying at a hotel, then technically the visa application requires an endorsement letter from the hotel manager and a copy of his/her Ghana government-issued photo ID as well, in addition to the copy of your hotel reservation. 

However, when I emailed the Marriott Accra to request these documents, they were only able to provide an endorsement letter on hotel letterhead confirming my reservation. They weren’t able to give me a hotel manager’s photo ID, and also said that I should go ahead and submit my visa application without it, since it usually goes through successfully.

I took their word for it and submitted the application successfully without that time, and it was processed successfully. So it appears that if you’re staying at a hotel, then they’re rather lenient on the requirement to include a Ghana government-issued photo ID. 

Lastly, you’ll need to include your proof of yellow fever immunization. When I applied there was a nationwide shortage of the vaccine in Canada, so I paid $125 at my local clinic for a fractional dose that’s valid for one year. The normal yellow fever vaccine is valid for 10 years. Either way, you’ll get a small yellow booklet that confirms you’ve been immunized against yellow fever, which you should submit as part of your visa application and also bring along with you to enter Ghana.

The Application

The application form is available on the Ghana High Commission to Canada’s website . You need to submit two copies of the application, with one 35mm x 45mm photo affixed to each. 

The form is mostly quite straightforward to complete, except item number 10, which asks you to the name, address, and phone number of two references in Ghana. If you’re like me and don’t know anyone in Ghana, you can just put the contact information of any two hotels in Ghana (one can be the hotel you plan to stay at). That’s what I found based on some quick research on TripAdvisor, and it worked well for me. 

For item number 14, if you’re applying by post then include your home address, otherwise you can just write “in-person pick up” if you’re applying at the Ottawa embassy or Toronto consular office.

There’s also a helpful checklist of necessary documents to include alongside the application.

When you’re done, either put it all into a package (together with a self-addressed prepaid courier envelope) and send it off in the mail, or bring it to one of the Ghana High Commission offices to submit. Remember to include your money order for payment as well – you can get these at your local bank branch. I ended up applying for my Ghana visa with very little time to spare before my trip, so I had to shell out $150 for the Express service.

I visited the consular office in Toronto, which is located in an office building at Yonge/Sheppard. It’s worth noting that the office lists a phone number and email address on the website, but neither was responsive to my queries. Now that I think about it, I imagine the Ottawa-based embassy might be a more responsive channel to address any questions you may have throughout the application process.

The office is pretty small, with one counter that’s open to service visa requests. At first, the lady working there appeared to give me a bit of a hard time about not having made a photocopy of my yellow fever document, and not having a Ghana government-issued photo ID with my hotel reservation.

But then, the guy who was sitting next to her (who appeared to be her boss) turned to her and said light-heartedly, “Give him the visa, okay?” We shared a laugh and pretty soon the lady was marking down the date on the visa retrieval slip. I returned a few days later to pick up my passport, which had the Ghana visa glued-in and stamped:

Overall, applying for a Ghana visa as a Canadian is a relatively straightforward process, although some of the requirements are in fact quite relaxed. Specifically, it seems that some parts of the application are geared towards visitors who plan to stay with a host in Ghana, so if you’re staying at a hotel, then having a photo ID of the host isn’t actually necessary, nor is providing specific references for item number 10 in the application.

Until Ghana introduces smoother visa procedures, it’s my hope that my experience obtaining a visa will be helpful to anyone who’s also looking to visit the West African country.

Verification Letter of Invitation Requirement in the China Visa Process: A Brief Guide

A Verification Letter of Invitation is required when certain foreigners apply for M/F visas to China such as those from the Middle East. The inviting Chinese company has to ensure the invitees conduct themselves appropriately in China and depart on time as scheduled.

In light of recent developments, the application procedures for business visas to China have undergone substantial simplification. Most foreigners can now apply for an M/F visa using only the invitation letter issued by a Chinese company. Additionally, citizens of certain countries are eligible to enter China without a visa and stay for up to 144 hours or even 15 days .

However, it’s important to note that some applicants may still need to apply for a “Verification Letter of Invitation (邀请核实单)” when applying for an M/F visa to China. In this article, we will introduce what a Verification Letter of Invitation is, who needs to apply for it, and the potential risks.

Wha t is a  Verification Letter for Invitation ?

A Verification Letter for Invitation is an official document issued by the local Foreign Affairs Office to verify the authenticity of an invitation extended to a foreigner. Among others, the foreign applicant should possess legit identification; the party issuing the invitation letter must be legitimate, either a public unit or a company; and the reasons for the visit should fall within permissible scope. The allowable purposes of the visit include:

• For exchange, visit, investigation(F visa)
• For commercial and trade activities (M visa)

It’s important to note that in most cases, the invitation letter provided by the inviting unit (whether a public entity or a company) is sufficient for M/F visa applications. The Verification Letter for Invitation is only required when the Chinese embassies or consulates in certain countries specifically ask for the document.

Meanwhile, it is also essential to note that obtaining a Verification Letter for Invitation does not guarantee visa approval. The final decision on granting a visa rests with the Chinese embassy abroad, based on the specific circumstances of the applicant.

Difference from the PU/TE letter

The PU/TE letter is also a type of official verification letter that foreigners need to receive before applying for several types of visas. With the PU letter, foreigners could apply Chinese business visa (M visa). With the TE letter, foreigners could apply China visitor visa (F visa). However, these two types of verification letters were mostly applicable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the pandemic control concerns, PU/TE letter issuance was very strict, for which the company needed to prove the project was very urgent and important or foreign invitees would make big contribution to the destination city.

Now, the Verification Letter of Invitation is the most common document to be submitted where a verification letter is required.

Who needs to apply for the Verification Letter for Invitation?

Based on current information, foreign applicants in Sri Lanka and most Middle East countries – such as Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan, and so on – need to submit a Verification Letter for Invitation when they apply for a visa to China.

That said, a Verification Letter for Invitation might not be required in a few Middle East countries, such as Saudi Arabia. Therefore, we suggest that foreign applicants consult with their the local Chinese embassy or consulate to confirm in advance.

How to apply for the V erification L etter for Invitation ?

The Verification Letter for Invitation needs to be applied for by the inviting Chinese company (inviter) at the local Foreign Affairs Office. The detailed procedures may vary slightly from city to city. But in general, the application may follow the below process:

Step 1: Account setup

The inviting Chinese company must open an online account on the official website of the Foreign Affairs Office. To open the account, the company may need to submit some documents, such as:

• Business License
• ID card or passport of legal representatives
• Company tax payment certificate
• Other required documents

Step 2: Prepare and submit application documents

Once the inviting Chinese company has an account, it can provide information about the invitee and submit relevant documents. The required documents usually include:

• Application Form for Inviting Foreigners to China
• Copy of the invited person’s valid passport (with a validity period of at least six months)
• Invitation Letter issued by the inviting organization
• Guarantee Letter issued by the inviting organization
• Dispatch Letter from the invitee’s current employer
• Government approval document, screenshot of exhibition registration, and relevant documents such as exhibition contracts and booth layouts (for those attending international conferences, exhibitions, or large-scale events in China)

Each document has specific requirements. The reviewing department will evaluate the situation and may request additional documents from the applicant company. Normally, the application process takes 4-5 working days, unless supplementary documents are needed. Once approved, the applicant company can download an Invitation Verification Letter from the online system. The application is free of charge.

If supplementary documents are required or if the submitted documents have deficiencies, the application processing time may be significantly extended. Foreign applicants are advised to allocate sufficient time for the application process to avoid any delays in their travel itinerary

Potential risks for the inviting company

As above mentioned, the Chinese company acting as the inviter for the Verification Letter of Invitation must issue a Guarantee Letter. The Guarantee Letter serves as a commitment that all submitted documents are accurate and authentic. Additionally, the company pledges to supervise and encourage the foreign invitee to adhere to Chinese laws and regulations and depart from China as scheduled.

If the invitee fails to leave China on time or engages in any illegal activities, the company assumes responsibility.

Considering this, companies should exercise caution when inviting foreigners to China. The application for the Verification Letter of Invitation should be grounded in genuine necessity. Additionally, the inviting company must proactively ensure that the invitees conduct themselves appropriately while in China and adhere to departure schedules.
