Ames, Iowa – Iowa State will play its first-ever football game outside of the United States when it opens the 2025 season against Kansas State in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, August 23, 2025, at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.
"We are extremely grateful for this opportunity presented to us by Aer Lingus to provide the young men in our football program an unrivaled educational, cultural and athletic experience," said Jamie Pollard, Iowa State's Director of Athletics. "Iowa State fans enjoy a tremendous reputation for following the Cyclones wherever they play, and we look forward to seeing them travel with us to The Emerald Isle for the 2025 season-opener."
The Cyclones and Wildcats will meet for the 108 th time on November 30, 2024, in Ames to close the 2024 regular season. Both teams will then play on Week Zero of the 2025 campaign with the sixth college football game ever played at Dublin's 48,000-seat Aviva Stadium, the first in Ireland to feature Big 12 Conference institutions and the first-ever meeting between the longtime rivals in a season-opener.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for the Big 12 Conference to play one of its classic rivalries on a global stage while showcasing our University and its football program," said ISU head coach Matt Campbell . "We are honored that Aer Lingus selected the Cyclones to participate in this prestigious game, which will afford a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our student-athletes to experience international travel while also helping to grow the game of college football outside of the United States."
It will mark the first time since 1997, the Big 12's second season, that Iowa State has opened its football season with a league contest and the earliest date ever that the Cyclones have kicked off the season.
The Aer Lingus College Football Classic aims to bring American college football to Ireland annually to promote Ireland as a travel destination, and 2025 will be the fourth-consecutive season that college football begins its season with a game in Dublin. Florida State and Georgia Tech will kick off the 2024 campaign in Ireland with an excess of 21,000 U.S. fans traveling overseas for game week. ESPN's College GameDay Built by The Home Depot will be on hand for the Aer Lingus Classic, broadcasting live from Dublin on Saturday, August 24.

"We look forward to providing the experience of a lifetime to the student-athletes and their loyal fans who travel to Ireland. Special thanks to Coach Campbell and Jamie Pollard for embracing this special opportunity for all of Iowa State University."
Aviva Stadium, which opened in 2010, was built on the site where historic Lansdowne Stadium once stood. Previous college football games played in Aviva Stadium include a pair of Notre Dame-Navy games (2012 and 2023), a Georgia Tech-Boston College game in 2016 and the 2022 Nebraska-Northwestern game. All-told, the ISU-KSU football game will be the 10 th played on Irish soil.
"I welcome the news that Kansas State University and Iowa State University have been chosen to play the fourth match in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic series", said Catherine Martin, Ireland's Minister for Tourism. "This event is now a firm fixture in the Irish sporting calendar and provides a huge boost to tourism and hospitality in Ireland and indeed creates a great atmosphere in Dublin for visitors and locals alike. We look forward to welcoming the teams and supporters to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin and beyond, as they go on to explore other parts of Ireland, in August 2025."
As title sponsor, Aer Lingus is responsible for transporting the teams and their delegations to Dublin on dedicated chartered flights. Aer Lingus, the Irish flag carrier, operates from 17 North America destinations direct to Ireland as well as offer seamless connections to Europe for U.S. travelers via its hub at Dublin airport.

"We have a proud history of connecting the U.S. and Ireland – flying to 17 destinations in North America this summer – and we are committed to growing this transatlantic network so we can continue connecting North America to Ireland and Europe through our Dublin hub.
"The Aer Lingus Classic draws substantial numbers of American visitors and gives the opportunity to showcase Ireland as a destination through this exciting event," Carberry said. "We look forward to welcoming both the Kansas State and Iowa State teams to Ireland for the game in 2025."

UMass transfer Matt Cross expected to visit Iowa men's basketball
IOWA CITY — UMass transfer Matt Cross is expected to visit Iowa this week, his father Jim confirms to the Register. Joe Tipton was the first to report the news. Cross is also scheduled to visit Wisconsin.
Cross has played four seasons at the college level. The forward started his career at Miami (Fla.) before transferring to Louisville. He spent one season at each of those stops before playing the last two campaigns at UMass. Cross has one season of college eligibility remaining.
Cross made 53 appearances, including 50 starts, over his two seasons at UMass. He averaged 13.8 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 34% from deep during that span. Cross set a career-high in points (15.3), rebounds (8.3) and assists (three) per game last season.
Cross could be a frontcourt reinforcement for the Hawkeyes. Iowa lost Ben Krikke and Patrick McCaffery from last season's roster. Krikke, who started every game for the Hawkeyes last season, exhausted his college eligibility. McCaffery transferred to Butler.
The Hawkeyes are returning co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year Owen Freeman, Ladji Dembele and Even Brauns in the frontcourt, while also bringing in rising freshman Chris Tadjo. But because of what Iowa is losing, it could also use the transfer portal to help fill the product lost from Krikke and McCaffery.
Listed at 6-foot-7, Cross has size and ability to stretch the floor, meaning that he could pair well with Freeman. Cross shot a career-high 40% from beyond the arc during his lone season at Miami, though it was a shortened campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That season was far above his eventual career average from deep, though, which stands at a 33.3% clip.
Iowa still has at least two scholarships open, and possibly even three. The Hawkeyes have already signed Morehead State transfer Drew Thelwell, who provides some backcourt help after the departures of Tony Perkins and Dasonte Bowen. Thelwell is the all-time winningest player in Morehead State program history.
More: Why Drew Thelwell transferred to Iowa men's basketball from Morehead State
The Hawkeyes are still waiting on the decision of Payton Sandfort, who might be the most consequential domino this offseason for Iowa. Sandfort entered the 2024 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility. He has until May 29 to decide his plans. If he opts against returning to college, it would be a major hit for Iowa.
But Cross would be a significant addition if head coach Fran McCaffery and company can make it happen.

Iowa State's new LeBaron Hall, expected to be finished by 2026, will feature 100-seat classroom
Iowa State University's 66-year-old LeBaron Hall is getting a substantial makeover.
The university held a groundbreaking for the new home of the College of Human Sciences on April 18.
Combined with additional renovations of McKay Hall and the Human Nutritional Science Building, the estimated $51.5 million project will demolish and replace LeBaron Hall, creating a two-story commons area, a multipurpose courtyard and renovated lobbies.
Construction is expected to be finished by 2026.
LeBaron Hall serves 5,000 students, faculty, and staff weekly, motivating school officials to push for a larger and more adaptable facility.
The project was made possible through private donations, including a $15.5 million lead gift, and university funds.
“The new LeBaron Hall will be a hub of hands-on activity centered around student learning,” said Laura Dunn Jolly, College of Human Sciences Dean and Dean’s Chair said in an Iowa State news release in September . “Labs and classrooms are designed to be flexible as industries change, ensuring this facility serves generations of future Cyclones.”
More: Suspect in Marshall County double homicide is taken into custody Saturday in Des Moines
Where will classes be held during construction?
Much of the LeBaron Hall's faculty has already been relocated to other permanent locations to plan for building demolition, while classes and hands-on learning labs specific to the apparel program moved over winter break into MacKay Hall. Classes that didn’t require specific equipment were relocated to other areas.
Iowa State previously held a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this month for the university's Veterinary Diagnostic Lab . The new facility opened in March, allowing some services to transfer from its previous location in Patterson Hall.
More: 14 ISU students will compete before Grammy-nominated Plain White T's. How to watch.
A look inside the new LeBaron Hall
The new LeBaron Hall will be located on the northwest corner of the Iowa State campus at 626 Morrill Road. The original building, built in 1958, will be expanded to 30,000 square feet, complete with two additional above-ground floors.
The new facility will include a 100-seat university classroom, studios for the college’s nationally ranked apparel program, experiential learning space for the event management program, and a historic textiles and clothing lab.
Iowa State University President Wendy Wintersteen said the transformative project that includes renovations to McKay Hall is an example of forward-thinking donors who share Iowa State's vision for the future.
“This new facility supports our commitment to provide a student-centric, world-class education now and in the future,” Iowa State University Wintersteen said.
A separate 10,000-square-foot addition will connect several different buildings with the new LeBaron Hall via a collaborative, two-story lobby.
“From the beginning, our vision was to create a space that powers student learning and innovation,” Dunn Jolly said. “Generations of Cyclones will benefit from the hands-on learning opportunities the new LeBaron Hall will provide.”

Additional construction at the College of Human Sciences
The adjacent Human Nutritional Science Building is already undergoing a handful of renovations.
The project will merge all facets of textile science research, which had been housed in LeBaron Hall and McKay Hall, into the Human Nutritional Science Building’s second floor. To improve teaching, research, and collaboration, a textile science classroom will also be built near the research lab.
McKay Hall's Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom, first opened in 1926, will be relocated to the first floor of HNSB. The student-run establishment provides students with “real-world” experience operating a restaurant. Its new location will be across from the Parks Library.

Iowa State, Kansas State to open 2025 season in Dublin, Ireland
Longtime Big 12 rivals Iowa State and Kansas State will open the 2025 season in Dublin, Ireland in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.
The game kicks off Aug. 23 and marks the first time Iowa State will play outside of the United States and just the second time for Kansas State. The Wildcats faced Nebraska in Tokyo, Japan, on Dec. 5, 1992.

The 2025 season will be the sixth college football game ever played at Dublin’s 48,000-seat Aviva Stadium. It’s the first time two Big 12 Conference teams will meet in Ireland.
The teams have played 107 times — every year since 1917 — and Iowa State holds a 53-50-4 series lead. They face off this year in Ames in the regular-season finale on Nov. 30. Next year will be the first time they play in a season opener. The last time either school opened the season against a conference foe was 1997 for Iowa State and 1996 for K-State.
Previous college football games played in Aviva Stadium include two Notre Dame – Navy matchups (2012 and 2023), Georgia Tech – Boston College (2016) and Nebraska- Northwestern (2022). Georgia Tech and Florida State will play there Aug. 24, 2024.
