A boat tour on Jökulsárlón will take you to parts of the ice lagoon you would not see any other way - into vistas that are simply sensational.    

The grand Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon began to form at the edge of Breiðamerkurjökull, a glacier tongue of Vatnajökull around 1934. In 1975 the lake had grown to 7.9 km2. Since that time, the growth rate has accelerated quite a lot because the glaciers in Iceland are receding faster . Recently, the surface area covered 18.2 km2. As the glacier recedes, this kind of growth can only increase. Jökulsárlón is the deepest natural lake in Iceland, at its greatest depth of 284 m. To really enjoy the Jökulsárlón area, you should allow enough time to explore the area around the lagoon and a walk to the nearby Diamond Beach . The icebergs which come to rest on the rough black sand are stunning. This surreal sight is something that no visitor to Iceland should miss out on.

Jökulsárlón is a natural wonder with huge iceblocks floating on the lagoon right by highway 1, the Ring Road! You can take a 30-40 minutes guided boat trip on the lagoon and sail among icebergs more than a thousand years old. A great opportunity for photographing! A small café with refreshments and souvenirs is by the lagoon. It is wonderful to relax on the veranda and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We are open from 15th May to 15th September. Skaftafell National Park is 60 km away, Höfn 80 km.

Once you step onto the ice it will feel like you are located on an icy planet.  You might see some crevasses, small caves, tunnels as well as little waterfalls and streams that form sinkholes called “moulins,” along with other beautiful ice features. The glacier also carries ashes of past volcanic eruptions, which often form a pyramid, called “dirt cones”.

During the glacier tour, you will get the chance to learn about the glacier, its history, how it was formed, how it affects our community, and how it continues to change and shape every day.

Joining Glacier Adventure for a Glacier Walk you will get a personal experience from a local company. During this glacier tour, you will explore this stunning outlet glacier which extends from Vatnajökull Glacier, the largest glacier in Europe.

The glacier tour starts and ends at our cozy base camp at Hali, only 12km east of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

At Hali you will be welcomed by the Glacier Adventure staff and provided with all the necessary glacier equipment like crampons, ice axe, helmet, and harness. Hiking boots are available for rent if you don‘t have them with you.

From Hali base camp we will drive towards the glacier on our modified jeeps, for approx. 30-40 minutes. From the parking lot, we will walk towards the glacier in a lunar landscape that has been shaped through the years by the retrieving glacier, the walk takes approx.  30-40 minutes.

The total duration of the glacier tour is between 3,5 and 4 hours, with 1 – 1,5 hours on the glacier. This tour is easy-moderated and family-friendly . Minimum age is 10 years old.

All glacier trips are taken at the responsibility of participants. Glacier Adventure does not take responsibility for accidents which are caused by their customers or can be traced to their own actions.

Our meeting point is located at our Glacier Adventure Base Camp, just a few steps away from Hali Country Hotel. We are located 13 km east of the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and 67 km west of Höfn. We recommend being there at least 20 minutes before departure time .

Driving in Iceland can be unpredictable. We recommend you to stay somewhere close to Hali the night before the tour. Here you can find accommodation suggestion.

No matter where you’re going in Iceland, it’s important to choose the right clothing and dress according to weather. We strongly recommend dressing in layers so it is easy to take off or put on layers depending on weather.

Glacier Adventure reserves the rights to refuse participation of clients if not dressed according to weather since this will put the clients at risk. In such circumstances no refunds shall be given.

• Cancellations received less than 24 hours before tour departure, will not be refunded. This includes bookings made within 24 hours before departure.
• If clients cancel their tour more than 24 hours before departure, a 95% refund will be given.
• “No Shows” will not be refunded if the client is not on time before the tour departure.
• Glacier Adventure reserves the right to cancel your trip with your safety in mind.
• With short notice, the tours can be canceled due to safety reasons or other natural conditions. In such cases, a 100% refund is provided.

Note : We don’t refund if the client is late or doesn’t show up, or if the weather is not good and the tour is still on schedule. We recommend that participants stay in a hotel or guesthouse close to Hali the night before the tour.

Tour Description

Follow the steps of Jon Snow beyond the wall with this 3-hour hiking expedition to an outlet glacier on part of the biggest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. Let your mind be blown away by the breathtaking views to thice-covered highest peaks of Iceland rising more than 2,000 meters (6.500 ft) over your helmet! No experience needed, easy difficulty, all you gotta do is trust in our expert guides.

You will meet your guide at our meeting point in Skaftafell and he will provide you with all the equipment you need: crampons, ice axes, harnesses and helmets. Then you will enter the troll bus and drive for about 10 minutes to the parking lot of the glacier. From there it’s only a 15 minutes walk to the edge of the ice where your guide will show you how to put on the crampons, steel frames which are tied to your hiking boots and make it possible for you to walk on the glacier.

The glacier outlets of Vatnajökull and their spectacular landscapes have been scenery for dozens of movies and TV shows such as James Bond, Interstellar, Batman, and Game of Thrones. Follow the footsteps of Pierce Brosnan, Matt Damon, and Jon Snow up a glacier tongue and have your eyes meet with the most stunning ice formations.

You will stay 60 to 90 minutes on the ice itself and see ice formations such as crevasses, deep cracks in the surface of the glacier, and so called moulins, often vertical shafts in the ice which are formed by melting water finding it’s way into fissures and cracks. In the wintertime, it is often possible to peek into small ice tunnels and capture the beautiful blue heart of the ice.

Your guide will introduce you in detail to the history of the glacier and tell you how the ice is formed on top of the mountains.

Never been in an ice cave before? No worries! Our certified guides will teach you all you need to know and have you walking safely in this environment. Safety equipment and briefings are provided before each tour.

Meeting Point

We will see you at our meeting point 20 minutes before the departure time stated on your ticket. Please note that if you arrive after departure time, your place on the tour can’t be guaranteed or refunded.

The meeting point is Skaftafell Terminal by the main road. You can look up “Skaftafell Terminal” on Google Maps to find the exact location and driving directions.

Driving time to Skaftafell from Reykjavík is around 4 hours and 30 minutes. If you arrive early, you can visit Skaftafell Terminal which offers free parking and has restrooms.

What should I wear on the tours?

Weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. For tours during winter: warm clothing as first layer, waterproof jacket with a hoodie, hiking boots with ankle protection and hard sole, a hat and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket or a soft shell with a hoodie is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for our trips as they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear when they get wet.

Do I need hiking boots?

We encourage bringing hiking boots for glacier tours. They have to hard on the sole and tight around the ankle. If you don’t have them, we have them for rent in all sizes in Skaftafell or Sólheimajökull. You can add them to your reservation at the time of booking or rent them on location pay with cash or card. The price is ISK 1,500 per pair. For ice climbing tours, boots are included in the price.

How difficult are glacier hikes?

We offer glacier hiking tours in Skaftafell and one in Sólheimajökull. Both locations either easy or moderate in difficulty. Our tours are considered to be safe for anyone in good physical condition. If you are fit to walk for about an hour on an uneven surface a glacier hike is for you. Longer tours will be more challenging in endurance and some areas of the glacier. We also recommend you remember that we offer all the safety equipment necessary and you will be hiking with a professional and certified glacier guide. If you have specific questions regarding one of our glacier tours, feel free to email us.

If I am pregnant, can I join a glacier hike?

This is a personal choice. We have had pregnant women on our glacier hikes and we always recommend you read the description of the activity to get a better idea. In any case, feel free to contact our Service Team for further questions and concerns.

What if it’s raining?

It rains a lot in Iceland, but we do not let rain stop us from going out and enjoy nature. All we need to do is choose our clothing wisely, which is why we recommend wearing waterproof clothing as the second layer. Of course, safety is our #1 priority. In case of extreme weather conditions, we will cancel our tours and do our best to reschedule. In these cases, you’ll receive a full refund.

Island ist ein wahres Eishöhlenparadies! Mit all den Gletschern und Eisformationen gibt es keinen Mangel an natürlichen Eishöhlen, deren blaue Eisdächer den Anblick faszinierend und extrem fotogen machen, um es gelinde auszudrücken. Es gibt einige verschiedene Eishöhlen, die während der vergangenen Jahre besucht wurden und wir werden über jede einzelne Höhle reden, um deren Unterschiede und Einzigartigkeit zu erklären. Die meisten von ihnen können im Rahmen einer Tagestour besucht werden und wie die Gletscher selbst befindet sich die Mehrheit der Eishöhlen im Süden Islands.

Der Besuch einer natürlichen Eishöhle ist eine einmalige Erfahrung und besonders jetzt, da die Gletscher aufgrund des Klimawandels schmelzen, wird der Zeitraum für einen Besuch kürzer.

Das Gefühl, in einem lebendigen Gletscher zu stehen, ist schwer zu schlagen und die Farben und die Geschichte, durch die sich die glazialen Schichten auszeichnen, sind bemerkenswert!

Die Eishöhlengletscher

Island ist wegen seiner Gletscher und Vulkane als das Land aus Eis und Feuer bekannt. Gletscher bedecken etwa 11% der Gesamtfläche der Insel und haben einen großen Einfluss auf die Natur, die Landschaften und das Leben in Island. Die Isländer leben seit Anbeginn der Besiedlung Islands in Harmonie mit den Gletschern und haben deren Kräfte immer gleichermaßen geliebt und und gefürchtet.

Die Gletscher und die Gletscherzungen, die von ihnen herunter kriechen, besitzen eine unglaubliche natürliche Schönheit und in diesem Artikel werden wir versuchen, Ihnen eine Vorstellung von ihren vielen und beeindrucken Eishöhlen zu geben.

Die Eishöhlengletscher sind Langjökull, der Kötlujökull-Auslassgletscher von Mýrdalsjökull, Breiðamerkurjökull und der Falljökull-Auslassgletscher von Vatnajökull.

How do Ice Caves form?

Wie formen sich Eishöhlen?

Eishöhlen oder Eistunnel bilden sich, wenn Schmelzwasser oder, so wie oft in Island, geothermale Hitze das Gletschereis zum Tauen bringt. Daraufhin bewegen sich die Gletscher und bahnen sich ihren Weg weiter runter. Wenn das passiert, entsteht oftmals ein Hohlraum. So formen sich Eishöhlen, die dementsprechend meistens am Fuße eines Gletschers gefunden werden können. Die konstante Bewegung und das Schmelzen der Gletscher führen dazu, dass sich auch die Eishöhlen ständig verändern. Sie können je nach Saison oder Monat ganz unterschiedlich aussehen. Dies ist der Grund, warum manche Menschen oft an der gleichen Eishöhlentour teilnehmen, wenn sie Island erneut besuchen.

Die Vatnajökull-Eishöhlen | Eishöhlen in Skaftafell

Vatnajökull ist Europas größter Gletscher und bedeckt etwa 8% der Oberfläche Islands. Dieses voluminöse Gletscherwunderland befindet sich in Zentralisland, im südlichen und südöstlichen Teil von Island und seine Auslassgletscher erstrecken sich bis an die Ringstraße im Süden. Die Menge an Schmelzwasser eines Gletschers dieser Größe ist unglaublich und mit dem Klimawandel und der Bewegung des Gletschers bildeten sich in dieser Gegend mehr und mehr Eishöhlen.

Die berühmtesten und beliebtesten Eishöhlen befinden sich auf Vatnajökulls Auslassgletschern Falljökull und Breiðamerkurjökull. In Falljökull tauchen immer wieder neue Eishöhlen und Tunnel auf, aber Breiðamerkurjökull besitzt die Kristalleishöhle.

Die Kristalleishöhle

Die Kristalleishöhle ist sehr wahrscheinlich die berühmteste Eishöhle Islands, die für ihre unglaublich türkisblaue Farbe bekannt ist. Sie befindet sich im Breiðamerkurjökull, einem Auslassgletscher Vatnajökulls, der größten Eiskappe Europas und dem Gletscher, der die bekannte Jökulsárlón-Gletscherlagune versorgt.

Es ist gut möglich, dass das erste Foto einer Eishöhle, das Sie zuerst gesehen haben, diese Eishöhle in Island zeigt. Die Eishöhle befindet sich am Fuße des Gletschers, was sowohl Vor- und Nachteile hat.

Zu den Vorteilen gehört das sehr dünne Eisdach, wodurch das Licht sehr leicht durch das Eis scheinen kann und den spektakulärsten Anblick blauen Eises schafft. Dies bedeutet aber auch, dass ein Besuch weitaus wetterabhängiger ist. Für diese Höhle hoffen wir auf einen kalten, aber klaren Tag, um Ihnen das außergewöhnlichste Erlebnis und eine Erinnerung zu ermöglichen, die Sie sicher nicht vergessen werden.

Bitte beachten Sie: Diese Tour ist sehr schnell ausverkauft, da nur eine bestimmte Anzahl an Besuchern erlaubt ist, die gleichzeitig die Höhle besuchen, um Ihnen genug Platz und ausreichend Zeit zum Bestaunen der Höhle zu ermöglichen. Dies ist der Grund, warum eine Buchung weit im Voraus empfohlen wird.

Im Herzen des Gletschers

Das ist die originale Tour „Im Herzen des Gletschers“. Dies ist ein Gletscherwander- und Eishöhlenabenteuer, das auf dem Falljökull durchgeführt wird, einem Auslassgletscher von Vatnajökull, der größten Eiskappe Europas. Diese Gletschereishöhle kann auch als Eistunnel bezeichnet werden, da sich einige Teile des Daches oftmals durch das Abtauen öffnen, und ist eine unheimlich schöne Eishöhle, die bereits seit einigen Jahren eine Winterattraktion im Skaftafell-Nationalpark ist. Die Eishöhle ist nicht immer dieselbe, aber hat es bisher immer geschafft, bei allen Besuchern Verwunderung auszulösen.

Dies ist die perfekte Tour für diejenigen, die auf einem Gletscher wandern und ebenfalls eine Eishöhle besuchen wollen: die ultimative Gletscherkombination für Winterreisende, die in die Region Skaftafell kommen.

Die Eishöhle unter dem Vulkan | Die Katla-Eishöhle

Diese Eishöhle befindet sich in einem Auslassgletscher der Mýrdalsjökull-Eiskappe namens Kötlujökull und wurde nach dem berühmten und aktiven Vulkan Katla benannt. Die Eishöhle ist relativ neu, aber wirklich prächtig und einzigartig. Die Landschaft auf dem Weg zum Gletscher ist extrem rau, deshalb müssen Sie sich einer Tour ab Reykjavík oder Vík anschließen oder das passende Fahrzeug besitzen, um dort hin zu gelangen. Die Gegend um die Gletscheröffnung diente als Drehort für „Star Wars: Rogue One“ und ist als unglaublich mondähnlich und wunderschön bekannt. Der Weg zum Gletscher ist kurz, aber Sie werden eine vernünftige Gletscherausrüstung benötigen, da man beim Betreten einer Eishöhle kein Risiko eingehen sollte. Diese Ausrüstung wird von den Reiseveranstaltern gestellt, die Trips zur Eishöhle anbieten – ein weiterer Grund, warum man die Eishöhle nicht auf eigene Faust erkunden sollte.

Als erstes werden Sie durch einen recht engen und verschlungenen Eistunnel gehen und dann den „Dom“ der Eishöhle erreichen, wo sich eine Öffnung an der Decke aufgetan hat. Dies gleicht dem Besuch einer enormen Gletscherkathedrale!

Zu Beginn des Jahres 2018 wurde eine weitere Öffnung zu einer zweiten Eishöhle innerhalb der ersten Eishöhle gefunden. Dies fügte dem Besuchserlebnis eines Gletschers unterhalb des Vulkans noch mehr Aufregung hinzu. Als wäre der Besuch einer einzigen Eishöhle in einem Gletscher direkt unterhalb des Vulkans Katla noch nicht abenteuerlich genug! Das ist eine der einmaligsten Erfahrungen, die man machen kann!

Die Langjökull-Eishöhlen

Langjökull ist Islands zweitgrößter Gletscher nach Vatnajökull. Er befindet sich im mittleren Westen und besitzt die Form des afrikanischen Kontinentes, nur umgedreht. Der Gletscher versorgt die Wasserfälle Gullfoss, Hraunfossar und Barnafoss mit Wasser und ermöglicht hervorragende Aussichten!

Langjökull verfügt über einen handgemachten Eistunnel, der vor einigen Jahren erschaffen wurde, und auf der anderen Seite des Gletschers befinden sich unvorstellbar schöne natürliche Eishöhlen, die während der vergangenen zwei Jahre entstanden sind. Die natürliche Eishöhle kann auf einer Schneemobiltour mit Beginn am Gullfoss-Wasserfall direkt am Goldenen Kreis oder ab Reykjavík besucht werden, die handgemachte Eishöhle mit auf einer Tour im Super Truck ab Húsafell oder Reykjavík.

Im Herzen des Gletschers | Der handgemachte Eistunnel im Langjökull-Gletscher

Während Sie Ihren Weg ab Húsafell in Richtung des Camps bestreiten, ähnelt das Terrain dem eines anderen Planeten. Sobald Sie angekommen sind, werden Sie in einen riesigen Monstertruck umsteigen, der Sie zur Öffnung des Eistunnels bringt, wo Sie mit Eiskrallen ausgestattet werden bevor Sie den beeindruckenden Gletscher von innen erkunden. Sie werden die Schichten des Gletschers sehen und mehr darüber lernen, wie und warum sich diese Linien formten. Im Inneren des Gletschers gibt es eine Kapelle, in der schon einige Menschen geheiratet haben!

Es gibt Risse in der Höhle, wodurch Sie noch besser in den Kern des Gletschers blicken können und es wird viele Momente geben, um einige tolle Fotos zu machen.

Das Erschaffen dieses Eistunnels erforderte eine Menge Planung, Enthusiasmus und Tatendrang, aber mit den richtigen Leuten wurde dies möglich und jetzt können Sie ihn besuchen!

Die Langjökull-Eishöhle

Die natürlichen Eishöhlen von Langjökull sind so unzählig wie verschieden. Die Eishöhle, die in der Saison 2016/17 gefunden wurde, war unglaublich schön, aber da das Eis sehr dick war, war es keine dieser blauen Eishöhlen, die man oft auf Fotos sieht. Stattdessen glitzerte die Höhle wie ein Diamant und die Stille im Inneren war unvergleichlich. Es war ein ziemlich magischer Moment in die Eishöhle zu rutschen, da sie nur durch eine natürliche Gletscherrinne zugänglich war. Diese Höhle war leider nicht von langer Dauer und war im Winter 2017/18 nicht mehr sicher.

Glücklicherweise schenkte uns die Natur eine andere Höhle, die sogar noch schöner war. Diese Gletschereishöhle besitzt eine saphirblaue Decke und intensive Farben, die die reichhaltige Geschichte der Vulkansysteme erzählen, die sich im Gletscher befinden. Beim Betreten der Gletschereishöhle können Sie nach rechts oder links gehen. Der linke Weg wird Sie zum schmalen Teil des Gletschers führen, wo kleine gefrorene Säulen anscheinend das Gletscherdach stützen und sich wunderbare Blautöne mit dem Schnee mischen. Der recht Weg wird Sie zu einem großen Loch bringen, das Sie betreten können. Dies ist die Stelle, wo Sie sich aufrecht hinstellen können und den Gletscher und seine Form wirklich bestaunen können. Der „gefrorene Fluss“ in der Decke ist an dieser Stelle am breitesten und während der kältesten Wintermonate formte sich ein gefrorener Wasserfall auf der rechten Seite. Sie werden wahrscheinlich herunter rutschen müssen, um diesen Teil zu entdecken, aber das Heraufkommen ist einfach, weshalb Sie sich gar keine Sorgen machen müssen!

Diese Eishöhle kann während einer Schneemobiltour über Langjökull oder einer Tour im Super Jeep besucht werden. Beide Touren sind als Tagestouren ab Reykjavík erhältlich.

Wie man sich für eine Eishöhlentour in Island anziehen sollte

Egal ob Sommer oder Winter, für ein Eishöhlenabenteuer in Island müssen Sie sich immer warm anziehen. Sie betreten schließlich das Innere eines Gletschers, unabhängig von der Jahreszeit. Thermounterwäsche wird empfohlen, die nächste Schicht sollte aus Outdoorhosen (vorzugsweise wasserfest) und einem Pullover bestehen bevor Sie einen Mantel oder eine wasserfeste Jacke anziehen.

Mütze, Buff-Tuch oder Schal und Handschuhe sind notwendig und eine Sonnenbrille sehr nützlich!

Sie werden ein Stativ, Ersatz-Akkus ( die Kälte wird Ihren Akku schneller entladen ) und natürlich eine angemessene Sicherheitsausrüstung für die Erkundung der Eishöhle benötigen.

Weitwinkelobjektive mit einer festen Blende eignen sich am besten dafür, die Höhle als Ganzes festzuhalten. Damit brauchen Sie den Fokus nicht hoch und runter stellen oder gar das Foto anschließend zusammenschneiden.

Wenn Sie dies mit Ihrem  Mobiltelefon  tun möchten, stellen Sie sich am besten in den Höhleneingang und falls Sie mit jemandem reisen, lassen Sie diese Person das Eis beleuchten, um die verschiedenen Farbtöne zum Vorschein zu bringen. Das kann dem Foto einen Hauch von Magie verleihen. Noch dazu können Sie auf diesem Weg mit Ihrem Mobiltelefon das Licht und die Farben am besten auffangen.

Eine weitere Möglichkeit wäre, das Licht, welches durch die Höhlenöffnung fällt, zu nutzen und Fotos vom tiefsten Punkt der Höhle aus zu machen. Bei all dem ist es am wichtigsten, sich Zeit zu lassen, herumzugehen, die Lichteinstellungen auf Ihrem Handy auszuprobieren und vielleicht sogar das Blitzlicht auszuprobieren sowie mit den unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu spielen!

Book turen og se hvorfor gletsjer Grand Slam er en af vores mest populære gletsjer ture. Du får muligheden for at besøge den betagende og inspirerende natur som Vatnajökull National park har at tilbyde.

Vi starter vores eventyr med en gletsjer lagune bådtur. Her kan du vælge mellem de to gletsjerlaguner: Jökulsárlón eller Fjallsárlón. Jökulsárlón er en enormt stor og smuk lagune som fører ud i havet. Her kan i se de kæmpe store isbjerge flyde rundt i det klare vand. Fjallsárlón gletsjer lagune er en mindre kendt lagune og et af de lokales favorit steder. Denne lagune er ikke lige så stor som Jökulsárlón, og har heller ikke lige så klart vandt. Du kan vælge mellem de to laguner når du booker turen i vores booking system her på siden.

Når du ankommer til den valgte lagune, tager du en fantastisk 45 - 60 minutters Zodiac bådtur, igennem de mange store isbjerge. Her oplever du at komme helt tæt på de hvide og blå iskæmper. Din gletsjer guide tager dig på en rejse tilbage i tiden. Kom og lær om historien og formationen af lagunen og alle dem der har beboet det her smukke landskab.

Efter sejlturen på gletsjerlagunen, skal du rejse i egen bil til Skaftafell (ca. 45 - 60 min). Her kan du nyde frokost (ikke inkluderet) inden I møder jeres guide for gletsjervandring.

I Skaftafell starter vi med en introduktion af den unikke og spændende verden af is (Glaciale Vidundere). I får en gennemgang af de spektakulære, men nemme stier ved Falljökull Gletsjer. Vi tager en kort gåtur hen ad gletsjerdalen hvor din guide vil forklare de unikke kendetegn af Falljökull og Virkisjökull gletsjer og deres omgivelser. Når vi ankommer til udkanten af Falljökull gletsjer tager vi vores gletsjerudstyr på og derefter finder vi vej op de isede, men nemt tilgængelige skråninger. På vores vej vil vi opleve utrolige is-formationer og sprækker. Vi får lært hvordan gletsjeren bliver dannet og hvordan den forsætter med at forandre sig selv hele tiden. Vi vil nærme os det ærefrygtindgydende isfald. Se hvordan den ældgamle is falder hundredvis af meter fra toppen af bjerget og langsomt flyder mod havet, en rejse den aldrig vil fuldføre fordi at den globale opvarmning fremskynder dens smeltning og dens langsomme tilbagetrækning. Det er med sikkerhed det ultimative Islands eventyr, fyldt med udforskning og en uforglemmelig udsigt over Skaftafell Nationalpark.

Eqi Glacier boat tour: a journey to the edge of the world

The Eqi Glacier boat tour takes travellers to the precipice of the planet. There you will find an almost supernatural experience

The gigantic Eqi Glacier in Greenland sits around 430km north of the Arctic Circle and around 1,600km south of the North Pole. On a planet of nearly eight billion people , very few carve out an existence at these latitudes.

Eqi, meaning ‘edge’ in Greenlandic, is an apt name for a glacier positioned at the last frontier of humanity. If Earth were indeed flat, Eqi Glacier may well be the spot marked on maps where ships disappear.

I visited Ilulissat following my adventures trekking the Arctic Circle Trail . After the disappointment of failing to complete the trail, I was keen to make use of my remaining time in Greenland. On arrival in Ilulissat, I hastily booked an Eqi Glacier boat tour with World of Greenland .

Positioned around 80km north of Ilulissat – a Greenlandic word for ‘icebergs’ – it takes at least three hours to reach Eqi by boat. Our vessel left the harbour at Ilulissat and cruised up the picturesque Ataa Strait, the long stretch of water in the Disko Bay region of western Greenland. Travel times can be longer depending on weather and sea conditions. I was fortunate: the day was glorious and the waters were calm.

The journey there was worth the money alone. Slicing through the calm waters outside of Ilulissat, signs of civilisation quickly receded. The boat manoeuvred slowly and carefully through the throng of gently rocking icebergs, before gradually picking up speed as it left the colourful town behind.

We motored on, pausing briefly by a small glacier-fed waterfall spilling over the cliffs above. Eqi Glacier finally emerged from between black cliffs on the horizon; a gleaming white arc above the water. At first glance, it didn’t appear as large as I’d been led to believe. Had I been duped by marketing hyperbole?

As we drew near, a smaller vessel cut across the glacier’s facade. Only now, with a tiny man-made contraption before it, did the true scale of the glacier materialise.

After a further hour of travel directly into its ever-widening expanse, I was heartened to see the sheer scale of this natural wonder reveal itself.

It was colossal. Behind the relatively insignificant wall of ice where our boat was positioned sat the immense Greenland ice sheet (or icecap). This vast body of ice covers 1,710,000km 2 of Greenland – approximately 80% of its land surface.

Generally thicker than 2km (and 3km at its thickest), the Greenland ice sheet is the world’s second largest body of ice. Only the Antarctic ice sheet at the antipode of the planet is bigger. Despite its enormity, Eqi – along with most of Greenland’s glaciers – is retreating.

The melting of Greenland’s glaciers and ice sheet has been widely reported , particularly following an unprecedented summer in the Arctic where heatwaves  accelerated the ice melt  in the northern hemisphere. This year, a team of scientists revealed the Greenland ice sheet has begun melting  even in winter .

The calving glacier

Known as the calving glacier, Eqi is five kilometres wide where it meets the sea and can be up to 250m at its highest. It may not be the biggest in the area, but the glacier is one of the most active in Greenland. Not long after our arrival, it promptly accommodated with the first of several irruptions.

A shaft of ice sliced away from its walls and thundered into the sea, sending seagulls tearing off into the sky. Immediately, the water around us began to beat. It is for this very reason that our boat had to remain at a safe distance from the glacier wall. When exceptionally large chunks of ice carve from the glacier, they can produce huge waves – even small-scale tsunamis .

More calving followed and the water around our boat changed in both appearance and texture. When we arrived, the water was smooth and clear. Now, it was thickening with small icebergs and slush as debris from the glacier surrounded our boat.

The surface took on an uncanny, almost hypnotic tone as the carpet of white pulsed beneath the hull. Standing there, swaying on the boat as it gently rocked in the water’s swell, felt like hovering on the edge of the world.

My cheeks turned scarlet from the wind and my fingers stiffened from the cold, but I, like everyone else on board, could not tear myself from the ethereal beauty of the glacier. It was utterly captivating.

The Eqi Glacier boat tour really does feel like a journey to the edge of the Earth. Here, at the precipice of the planet, it is clear that we humans are trespassing on nature’s premises. Here, she calls the shots. I was allowed to stay for a while, but only on her terms.

Eqi Glacier boat tour: the essentials

What: Eqi Glacier boat tour from Ilulissat, Greenland.

Where: Ilulissat is slowly beginning to meet accommodation demand with a growing selection of options . My visit during the peak month of July was a last-minute decision so most of the hotels were fully booked. With few options left, I stayed at Ilulissat Apartment , a basic self-catering apartment 10 minutes’ walk from the centre of town.

Other popular but more expensive hotels include Hotel Hvide Falk , Hotel Arctic and Hotel Icefiord . There is also a growing number of Airbnb options available throughout town. Click  here  to get a discount on your first stay.

When: The best time for an Eqi Glacier boat tour is from mid-June to mid-September when the glacier can be safely reached. This is also the best time for visiting Ilulissat as the weather is at its best for spotting whales, hiking, kayaking and witnessing the famed midnight sun. This is also the busiest time of season with hotels and lodges selling out fast so it’s best to book ahead.

How: I booked my Eqi Glacier boat tour with World of Greenland at their main offices in the centre of Ilulissat. Excursions run daily from June to September meeting at 9.45am. The trip out to the glacier usually takes between three to four hours, but can take longer depending on conditions. The boat stays by the glacier for approximately two hours.

The price per adult is DKK 2,295 ($140 USD) and includes a light breakfast served shortly after departure followed by a substantial cold lunch just before arriving at Eqi Glacier. Complimentary tea and coffee is available throughout the day.

Tours start outside the main office where minibuses meet customers and transport them to the wharf where the boat departs. After the tour, minibuses return customers to the offices or to the main hotels in town.

I flew to Kangerlussuaq from London via Copenhagen in Denmark. From there I booked an internal flight to Ilulissat with  Air Greenland who essentially have a monopoly on domestic flights in Greenland. Book via  Skyscanner .
