7 Best Island Day Trips From Athens, Greece

  • Travel With Confidence

With so many islands to choose from, it’s often thought that to enjoy a Greek island experience one has to travel far from Athens by plane. This is not, however, necessarily true.

The Saronic Islands lie in the Aegean Sea, known as the Saronic Gulf, between Athens and the northeast coast of the Peloponnese. A cluster of smaller and lesser-known islands to the international tourist, they’re easily reached by ferry from the Port of Piraeus in sometimes less than an hour, making them perfect as a day trip or even weekend destination, and many Athenians have second homes there.

Once you’ve experienced the best things to see and do in Athens and the best food to try , come with me as I explore the Saronic Islands and more to showcase the best island day trips for you. Usually the best time to go is in the summer, yet despite the islands not being as touristy as other popular Greek islands, expect them to be busier at this time of year. For good weather that will allow you to take advantage of the variety of things to do, spring and fall are good, too.

If you’re considering a visit to any island that’s recommended for hiking, note that spring and fall are better times for your visit, and hikes on these islands can be quite strenuous. Always seek local advice before setting out.

Salamina, Attica, Greece.

We start with Salamis, the nearest island to Athens at just 12 miles away from the small Port of Perama, very near the main Athenian Port of Piraeus.

It’s often overlooked as a destination as it has a heavy shipbuilding industrial past, not a glitzy appeal — but it shouldn’t be. There are many nature walks to be had, and you’re bound to stumble across ancient antiquities, from the signposted monument of Kolones — a circular 4th-century stone funeral monument — to small stones with no indication of what they could be.

The fish market in Salamina, the island’s chief city, is an interesting place to witness local life, whereas the local Archaeological Museum — housed in a beautiful building that was the old elementary school — showcases Salamina’s historical past.

Although much of the island’s architecture has been replaced with new apartment blocks, the blue-framed, whitewashed house belonging to the famous Greek poet Angelos Sikelinos nestled by the sea is indicative of its past, and a great place to watch the sunset.

Pro Tip: Travel by car ferry (which operates every 15 minutes) from Perama on the mainland to Salamis. Journey time is 15 minutes.

Greek island Poros on sunny day.

Poros’s harbor is what will draw your eye initially to the island as you sail in. Poros Town is built amphitheatrically around the port — curved and rising from the ground up, surrounded by lush green pine forests.

The aesthetically pleasing neoclassical style buildings of the town are an attraction in themselves, as is the Clock Tower sitting atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the town and surrounding Saronic Gulf. It’s the local equivalent of Big Ben and a good place to take sunset pictures.

Despite its small size (19 square miles), Poros offers several small sandy beaches to relax on, but if history is your thing, you’ll appreciate the smattering of churches across the island, many with ancient frescos and relics, the most visited being the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigis — which also served as an orphanage to children born of men fighting the Greek Revolution of 1821.

Famed American novelist Henry Miller was moved upon seeing Poros when he visited in 1939, stating, “Coming into Poros gives the illusion of the deep dream. Suddenly the land converges on all sides and the boat is squeezed into a narrow strait from which there is no egress.” One could maintain that not much has changed since then.

Pro Tip: It takes a little longer to reach Poros — 2.5 hours by slow ferry from Port of Piraeus in Athens, or via hydrofoil in roughly an hour.

Aegina with traditional fishing boats.

From pebbly beaches — one at the fishing village of Souvala in the north of the island with thermal hot springs that help rheumatic and dermatological problems — to the 500 B.C. Doric Temple of Aphaia Athena which, along with the Parthenon of Athens and Temple of Apollo at Delphi, makes up part of the Holy Triangle of Antiquity, to the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Nektarios, one of the largest in the Balkan region, much awaits you when you come to the Saronic island of Aegina.

Greeks and foreign tourists alike come to Aegina for day trips and weekend breaks and its lack of all-inclusive resorts makes it a popular destination for relaxing, sightseeing, and drinking a coffee along the waterfront.

With ancient sites, relaxing coves, and picturesque seaside villages, Aegina is a good choice for an island day trip from Athens.

Pro Tip: Both slow and fast ferries depart for Aegina almost every hour, and the journey time is between 30 minutes and one hour depending on which one you take.

Agioi Anargiroi, Agistri island, Greece.

Aegina’s smaller neighbor, Agistri is only 10 minutes from its big sister, and despite the fact it’s only 5 square miles and has just over 1,100 permanent residents spread out across its four villages, Agistri makes a perfect quiet island day trip.

As you enter the Port of Skala, the small blue-domed church of Agioi Anargyroi sits at the harbor’s edge ready to welcome you — it’s the first thing you’ll notice about Agistri. Skala also has a clean, organized beach with sunbeds and umbrellas, making it a popular spot to hop off the ferry and spend the day relaxing before taking the evening ferry back to Athens.

If you’re keen to explore more of the island, the beaches are served by a small bus service that regularly circles around. Or walk along the coastal road to find a selection of tavernas and restaurants all serving fresh fish, plus cafes and beach bars.

Agistri’s allure is the wonderful natural surroundings of pine forests and views of the Peloponnese. For a quiet trip and a chance to spend time on the beach during a day away from the city, you can’t go wrong with this tiny Saronic island.

Pro Tip: There are regular connections from the Port of Piraeus in Athens with journey times of 1 to 2 hours depending on which ferry service you take.

Donkeys on Hydra island in Greece.

Known as the Jewel of the Saronics, Hydra is possibly one of the most popular islands to visit on a day trip from Athens. It’s famous for not allowing any motorized vehicles on the island — except the fire and refuse trucks.

It’s not so popular for its beaches, but there are plenty of good swimming platforms and rocks to swim from.

Its main pull is the upmarket harbor with several boutique shops and small hotels, plus a good selection of places to eat and drink. The harbor’s been rebuilt to resemble the architecture of its heyday in the 1800s when it was ruled by the Venetians, and you don’t need to have a vast knowledge of architecture to appreciate the uniqueness of the houses and mansions here.

Due to its relaxed vibe and the fact it’s so aesthetically pleasing, Hydra has attracted many artists, both Greek and international — the most famous being the late Leonard Cohen who bought a home there and penned “Bird on a Wire.”

For a sophisticated Greek island day trip, Hydra is definitely the one you should choose.

Pro Tip: High-speed services to Hydra operate from the Port of Piraeus, and there are about five a day with journey times of just under 2 hours.

Going to Spetses island, Greece.

With its elegant restored mansions dating to the Venetian era, Spetses has a distinctly vintage feel to it.

The main port of Dapia has several upmarket cafes and bars to relax in, or if it’s swimming you’re after, a visit to the secluded sandy beaches of Agia Marina or Agia Paraskevi is a must. Reach these beaches either by car or by taking the inter-island bus service.

Walking and hiking along the old paths that cut across the island side to side past old chapels and small settlements is another popular activity, especially in the spring and fall when the weather’s cooler.

Spetses is a perfect place for downtime, to come and relax and just be.

Pro Tip: The high-speed ferry from Piraeus takes about 3 hours and about five ferries run each day.

Ioulida on Kea island in Greece.

Lastly, we look at the Greek island of Kea. Though not strictly in the Saronic chain of islands, it is still possible to spend a day here.

Also called Tzia, the island is a Cycladic one with houses and churches and traditional farmhouses in earthy tones, not the blue and white of the other Cycladic islands.

Nature lovers will love it here as there are several rare plant species as well as wild birds and reptiles.

The capital is Ioulida, a place that bans cars, and the Medieval castle standing guard over the quaint village makes for an interesting visit.

Most of Kea’s beaches are sandy, small, and secluded, so you won‘t have to worry about overcrowding. Fans of walking and hiking will enjoy the inland paths through archaeological ruins such as the Stone Lion, which, according to mythology, was sent down by the jealous gods to ravage the beauty of the island.

Pro Tip: To get to Kea/Tzia, you take a one-hour ferry from the Port of Lavrion, located just over an hour from the center of Athens. For this reason, an overnight stay is well worth it on this beautiful, verdant island.

If you’re short on time, there is a One Day Cruise that allows you to take in three Greek islands — Hydra, Poros, and Aegina — in one day, and the price includes lunch on board plus Greek music.

Port of Lavrio

An entry point to the cyclades, a different entry point to the cyclades, how to island hop from athens, athens has three ports..

Though the most famous port of Athens is Piraeus, it is not the only one. There are three ports that have itineraries connecting Athens to an array of different islands, so let’s start by listing them and how to get there:

Port of Piraeus

Piraeus is the main port of Athens and one of the most important ports in Europe. From here, you can take a boat to the Cyclades, to Crete, to the Dodecanese, and to the Northern Aegean islands. It is a massive complex with 12 gates, each dedicated to a group of destinations. Fortunately, there is a free shuttle service that can quickly take you from the entrance to various strategic spots in the port.

Piraeus Port Map

You can go to Piraeus in a variety of ways. If you are in the center of Athens, you can take the metro, bus, or taxi to Piraeus. Considering the frequent traffic jams in Athens, however, opting for the metro or train is often the most prudent option.

Go to Piraeus by bus.

You can take the bus to Piraeus by taking the 040 or 049 bus lines. The 040 bus line takes you from Syntagma Square to Piraeus, while the 049 line takes you from Omonoia Square to Piraeus. Make sure you get off at the Korai Square bus stop!

Then, it’s just 10 10-minute worth of walk to the port. The entire trip should take around 35 to 40 minutes if you don’t encounter traffic jams. The ticket is 1.20 euros for 90 minutes.

Go to Piraeus by train.

You can take the train to Piraeus in two ways: by hopping on the green line (also known as Line 1) from the Monastiraki train station, which is pretty central in Athens, with directions towards Piraeus.

The trip takes around 25 minutes, and once you arrive at the Piraeus metro station, you need to walk roughly 5 minutes to get to the port’s entrance. The ticket is 1.20 euros for 90 minutes.

Alternatively, if you’re at Athens’ airport Eleftherios Venizelos, and you want to go directly to Piraeus, your best option is metro line 3 which connects you directly to Piraeus’ port. The trip is roughly 1 hour, and the ticket is 10 euros.

Go to Piraeus by taxi.

If you opt to go by taxi, allow for at least an hour’s worth of time to get there comfortably. Technically, the trip to Piraeus by car is around 35 minutes, but traffic jams can draw out that time. The taxi fare for this trip is around 20 euros, with a 5 euro cap during nighttime.

No matter what way you choose for getting to Piraeus, always calculate at least 30 minutes of additional time that you will spend navigating the port itself! Keep in mind that it is a massive port with many gates, and walking to where you need to go is a task, even if you take the shuttle.

Port of Rafina

Rafina port

The port of Rafina is Athens’ second-largest after Piraeus. It’s located about 30 km from Athens’ center, towards the east. Rafina is a lot more manageable than Piraeus and quite smaller, so it will make for a less hectic experience!

You can go to Rafina by taxi or by bus. The drive to the port is roughly an hour, depending on traffic.

Go to Rafina by bus

You can take the KTEL bus to Rafina. To do so, you can first hop on the train to get to Victoria Station, then walk to Pedion tou Areos Park, where you will find the bus station at Mavrommateon Street. The bus fare is 2.60 euros, and the trip is roughly an hour, though depending on the season and the traffic, it can be as long as an hour and a half. The good thing is that you will get off right at the port!

Go to Rafina by taxi.

The fare for a trip from the center of Athens to Rafina by taxi is around 40 euros and should take 45 minutes, especially if you take the highway of Attiki Odos. The cheapest and most comfortable way to get a taxi is to pre-book it; otherwise, you may get extra caps in the fare.

island hopping day trip from athens

This port is fairly small and only serves very specific routes to islands, as we will see in a bit. That makes it low in crowds and extremely manageable. The port of Lavrio is in the southeast of Attica’s coastline. It’s 65 km from the center of Athens but only about half of that from Athens airport!

You can go to Lavrio by bus or taxi.

Go to Lavrio by bus

Like with Rafina, you can take the KTEL bus from Mavrommateon Street at Pedion tou Areos park. The trip is roughly 2 hours, and the fare is 5.60 euros.

Go to Lavrio by taxi.

The trip by taxi is around 1 hour 45 minutes if there is moderate traffic. Expect the fare to be around 45 euros or up to 65 euros if you pre-book it and you have a lot of luggage.

General information on booking tickets for island hopping

island hopping day trip from athens

The best way to book your tickets and plan your island hopping is to do so online, using a site like ferryhopper to pick the best ferry routes at the best possible price (remember, the earlier you do it, the better).

Most ferry trips always have tickets to purchase, even at the last minute, all the time. However, it’s not a guarantee. You may need to wait for the next ferry, which means you will be losing precious time, especially during the high season. Therefore, it’s recommended that you book everything in advance, at least a month or two early.

If you purchase your ticket online, it’ll be either an e-ticket with a barcode or a regular ticket without a barcode. If it’s one without a barcode, it means you have to go and manually pick up your paper ticket from the ticket office at the port before you can board the ship. Ticket offices are very close to the port or even the ship you will be boarding, so don’t stress over it!

If your ticket is an e-ticket, you can do an online check-in and download your boarding pass on your phone. That means you can go ahead and board your ferry when it’s time.

Be aware that there may be strikes! Strikes in Greece can be frequent, especially since the financial crisis has made things dire for a lot of professional classes. While during high season, they tend not to affect major tourist industries, it’s not a guarantee.

Make sure your scheduling isn’t affected by checking in advance whether there are strikes. An easy way to do this is by checking this site for scheduled strikes. No matter the strikes, there will always be some transportation that can get you to the port.

If the port is experiencing strikes and the ferries can’t depart, you will be compensated, and your ticket will be reissued for a different time or day. The one strike you can predict is the one that always takes place on May Day (May 1st), so make sure you don’t schedule anything on that day!

Easiest island-hopping routes from each port of Athens

While technically, there are several islands you can go to from at least Piraeus and Rafina, the easiest island hopping routes that will give you more variety for the minimum of time in travel are very specific per port.

The point of island hopping is to fit as many islands as possible and have the time to experience them in a short amount of time. Therefore, here are the best routes for exactly that from each port!

Island hopping from Piraeus

A tour of the saronic islands.

The gorgeous Saronic islands are the closest ones to Athens and, thus, extremely popular for short vacations with Athenians. There are five of them, of which at least four should be on your list: Aegina, Poros, Hydra, and Spetses.

Each island boasts stunning natural beauty, crystal clear waters, iconic architecture, and rich history and culture for those interested in immersing themselves in tradition and heritage. And if you’re into relaxation and lounging on some of the best beaches you can find, then you should consider spending some time in Agistri.

To have some time to spend in each and do so comfortably, you need at least a full week. Ten days is even better.

Aegina island

Aegina is a gorgeous island just an hour away by ferry from Piraeus. Begin by exploring the island’s Chora, with the picturesque port promenade and Greece’s first-ever National Archaeological Museum, founded by the country’s first governor in 1829, just eight years after the Greek War of Independence. Spend a full day exploring the various archaeological sites (especially the Temple of Aphaia) and lounge on some of its most beautiful beaches, namely Aghia Marina and Perdika.

Poros island sailing in Greece

The ferry from Piraeus to Poros is a little over an hour. Begin by exploring the island’s picturesque Chora with a visit to its Archaeological Museum and the stunning sweeping view of the entire island from Roloi Tower. Don’t miss the ruins of the temple to Poseidon and the rich history behind it! The best beaches include Askeli and Monastiri.

island hopping day trip from athens

Hydra is the most well-known of the Saronic islands and is very prominent in Greece’s recent history. It’s also famous for its ban on cars within its Chora, where you can only use donkeys or horses or go everywhere on foot! It’s extremely picturesque, with impressive architecture and an iconic, timeless style that you will love. Visit historic mansions, and enjoy the beaches, especially Mandraki and Kastello.

island hopping day trip from athens

Just 2 ½ hours from Piraeus, Spetses is the epitome of retro heritage, beautiful historic sceneries, and lovely seasides. Again, this island is very prominent in the country’s modern history. Visit the various historic mansions, like one of Laskarina Boumboulina, one of the heroines of the Greek War of Independence. Enjoy the cosmopolitan flair of the island and lounge on the gorgeous beaches of Kaiki and Zogieria.

You can easily begin your island hopping around the Cyclades by starting from any of the following beautiful islands, quickly reached from Piraeus:

Ermoupoli in Syros - Beautiful Towns in Greece

The gorgeous capital of the Cyclades is only 2 hours with the hydrofoil and 3 with the regular ferry. Syros’ Chora, called Ermoupolis, is also one of its highlights, with stunning neoclassical architecture and several museums and churches to visit.

Make sure you also visit Ano Syros, right over Ermoupolis, for a complete experience of tradition and history. Syros is connected to almost every Cycladic island, so it’s the perfect entry point for island hopping!

How to get from Athens to Tinos

3 to 4 hours away by ferry from Piraeus, there is Tinos island. It’s also known as the Island of the Virgin Mary or the Island of the Winds. Explore Tinos’ Chora with the huge complex of the Church of the Virgin Mary (Evaggelistria), the picturesque winding whitewashed streets, and the beautiful seaside promenade. You can also hop from Tinos to several Cycladic islands, including Mykonos and Syros!

Little Venice Mykonos

Depending on the type of ferry, you are only 2 to 4 hours away from Mykonos when you depart from Piraeus. Mykonos needs little introduction, as it’s internationally famous for its cosmopolitan venues, the gorgeous Little Venice, and the windmills- and the easy access to more islands!

island hopping day trip from athens

Again, from Piraeus, you’re only 2 to 4 hours away from the beautiful Serifos, known for its gorgeous wild natural vistas of rocky landscapes, picturesque villages, and emerald blue waters. If you’re a nature lover, this should be your entry point to the Cyclades.

island hopping day trip from athens

Sifnos is 2 to 5 hours away from Piraeus, again depending on the type of ferry. Sifnos is the quintessential Cycladic island, with lots of customs and traditions, gorgeous vistas, picturesque, white-washed villages, and beautiful beaches.

island hopping day trip from athens

One of the gorgeous volcanic islands of the Cyclades, Milos, is 3 to 7 hours away from Piraeus, depending on the ferry type. Famous for its gorgeous, exotic beaches with stunning rock formations, the traditional fisherman villages, and its mysterious sea caves, Milos is perfect for a first but also unique experience of the Cyclades.

Island hopping from Rafina

Rafina is arguably the better port for getting a quick entry point to the Cyclades, though it has a narrower selection of islands to reach. You will reach them faster than you will from Piraeus!

Batsi Andros Island Greece

Andros is just under two hours away from Rafina, and even less than that if you take the speedier boats! A gorgeous island with sandy beaches, unusually lush natural landscapes, neoclassical architecture, beautiful museums, and imposing beaches, Andros is not too typical of the rest of the Cyclades. All the more reason to make Andros your entry point and add variety from the get-go!

Tinos and Mykonos

Tinos island in Greece

You can also reach Tinos and Mykonos from Rafina! You will get to them slightly faster (about an hour sooner if you choose the right type of boat), and the hassle of dealing with the port and boarding will be a lot simpler than in Piraeus. Most Athenians prefer Rafina port for their forays into the Cyclades.

Island hopping from Lavrio

Direct access to the atypical cyclades.

island hopping day trip from athens

In roughly an hour, you can get from Lavrio port to Kea, one of the lesser-known but stunningly beautiful Cycladic islands. Kea is not like the other Cyclades. Instead of whitewashed houses, you will see gorgeous neoclassical mansions.

Instead of arid hill slopes, there are lush verdant pathways and hiking trails to explore. Kea is the unusual entry point to the Cyclades, from where you can then easily hop on to Syros and continue your exploration of them!

Kythnos island Greece

In roughly two hours, you can also get from Lavrio to Kythnos, the unknown Cycladic island that is, however, famous for its thermal springs. Picturesque, imbued with traditions, and typical in its architecture and style with sugar cube houses and brightly colored fences and doors, Kythnos offers a laid-back, tranquil atmosphere.

Make sure you explore its various pathways and the Katafyki cave with its beautiful interior before you hop to another island!

All of the above destinations make for excellent day trips from Athens if you’re looking for quick dips into the gorgeous setting of the Greek islands or ideal entry points for island hopping from island to island. All you need to do is sit back, design your itinerary, and combine Athens with an island adventure!

Overall, our 8-day trip to Greece in September of 2023 was fantastic! Our trip started in Athens where we had excellent accommodations (including breakfast) and a great tour of the Acropolis, the museum, and the Temple of Poseidon. We arrived in Mykonos on Day 3 to find our hotel had moved to a different location on the island. The company accommodated us with a vehicle as the hotel was in a completely different part of the island. Thankfully someone in our group was willing to drive! The hotel was really nice and located within walking distance of shops/dining. Our final part of the trip was in Santorini. The tours in Santorini were amazing (afternoon/dinner/sunset cruise on a catamaran and a bus tour of the island with wine tasting)! However, the hotel accommodations we less than desirable in Santorini. Our room was very old and rundown. All transfers to/from the airports/ferries were excellent, as well! I would highly recommend utilizing Tourratdar for your upcoming holiday! They were accommodating and communicative throughout the entire process. Personally, in hindsight, we would've planned for 1 additional day in Athens and 1 additional day in Santorini.

Effortless travel. Just turn your brain off and let dot travel does what they are good at. Transfers were punctual and appropriate timing. Hotel choices were decent albeit two of them being distant from centre (in exchange for privacy i guess) & the mykonos one has thin wall (we couldn’t sleep well). The hotel in Santorini was the best - I hope you guys will continue to do business with them. I would appreciate if dot travel can make some recommendation for some optional tours or activities to fill our day.

Incredible Crete! Tour

Incredible Crete!

The tour of Crete was indeed Incredible due to two great gentlemen! RG and Kostintinos displayed the utmost professionalism and class as they drove us all through the island of Crete. They were very genuine and thoughtful to Michele and I throughout the entire trip. They both knew that we were eager to experience and learn about Crete. Michele and I wanted to see Crete through the eyes of the locals that’s reside there and RG and Kostas delivered! We went off the grid and had experiences with Epos Tours that we never could have planned ourselves. Kostas is a wealth of information regarding the culture and history of Crete. From the minute you meet these two men you will bond and have the best travel experience ever! Miss you both and thanks again!

There are several amazing Greek island day trips from Athens you can plan for.  Greece’s ancient yet modern capital is the primary entry point to Greece, rich with archaeological sites, vibrant nightlife and unique urban flair. Athens is also a launching pad for Greek island excursions that are perfect day trips, each one just about an hour ferry ride away.

Here’s a look at the most popular Greek island day trips from Athens. You can easily organize a taxi from Athens airport to the ferry terminal by pre-booking before arrival.

Just 15 minutes on a ferry departing from the Port of Perama (west of the Athens port city of Piraeus), takes you over the waterway that was once the scene of the most strategic game-changing battles of ancient Greece: Battle of Salamina.

Today, Salamina is a quiet island destination where many working class Athenians head out for the weekend to get away from city life at their summer cottages. If you are looking for stunning waters set in a relaxed, low key atmosphere — this is a day trip for you.

Some of the top beaches include Psili Ammos, Iliakti, Aeanteio, and the southern beaches of Selinia, Saterli and Kaki Vigla. Also worth visiting is the Fanoromeni Monastery and the Archaeological Museum of Salamina.

Salamina island, Greece

With one of the most stunning island harbors in all of Greece, Hydra is the gem of the Saronic Gulf . It’s also unique as the only Greek island free of any cars.

Here donkeys do the heavy lifting and transport, adding to the rustic feel of the island. Admire the noble stone architecture and get lost in Hydra Town’s inviting maze of stone paths and bougainvillea drenched lanes.

If you get inspired to be creative, you wouldn’t be alone. Artists and writers including Arthur Miller, Leonard Cohen, Melina Mercouri and Sophia Loren all have visited and stayed for a while.

Just a one hour ferry ride takes you to Poros island, where Poros Town greets visitors at its port and is the main town to explore, lined with stone paths, cobbled lanes and a hilltop clock tower with stunning views.

There are beautiful beaches too including sandy Askeli and Love Bay which is bordered by fragrant pine forests.

Poros island, Greece

Aegina is one of the closest islands to Athens, only 16.5 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus. The ancient Aphea Temple is a must-see site, and forms an equilateral triangle with the Parthenon of Athens and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion in southern Athens; often referred to as the “holy triangle” of the antiquity.

Aegina Town is the main town, lined with historical buildings, museums, shops and cafes. There are many smaller villages including Kypseli, Agii and Vagia and beach resorts like Agia Marina, Perdika and Souvala.

Just under an hour ferry ride from the port of Piraeus is Agistri – often overlooked by international tourists – making it a calm island getaway for a day or a weekend.

The landscape here is strewn with greenery and pine trees that meet aqua blue waters. There are four towns to explore including Megalochori, Skala, Limenaria, and Metochi. The best beaches are Halkiada, Dragonera and the tiny island beach of Aponisos.

For a Day Trip or Weekend

That sums up the best Greek island day trips from Athens, each one is explorable within a day or if you have more time, for a weekend.

During the summer season, frequent ferry connections between many of the islands make it possible to plan a few days of island hopping.

A day trip is of course better than no trip, but many day-trip destinations are so different (and better) at night, it’s worth considering a stayover.

' src=

Very good point too! Especially with these beach destinations, I love walking the beach at night, it’s such a beautiful atmosphere :)

Hopefully when we get to Greece we can spend some proper time instead of jetting off at the end of the day :)

Ah I wish I read this a week ago. I planned my trip to Athens, Santorini and Crete and am flying in between the islands. I love that Piraeus is just under an hour ferry ride! Great information.

Well if you find you have some spare time in Athens perhaps you can jump on a ferry one day! Have an amazing trip!

It is an awesome name, isn’t it!! Hope you have the chance to hit up Athens soon!

Greece is one of the countries high on my bucket list of Europe. These islands just look perfect. I mostly want to visit Greece for its history followed by the beaches. Aegina looks appealing with a mix of temples and beach.

Glad to hear that Reshma! It’s an incredible country :) And yes, the Greek Islands are as close to paradise as one could get! Aegina is a great choice if you’re traveling for history :)

Yes, Santorini is gorgeous and worth a trip if you can swing it, but there are so many more beautiful islands worth exploring! If you’re traveling to Athens, at least one of these day trips should be on your agenda.

Absolutely Nick! It’s a much more authentic experience too when you’re exploring islands off the typical tourist track :) Happy travels!

We visited Greece in June and what an amazing place to explore! It was so hard to make our itinerary because there are just soooo many places that look wonderful. Hydra is high on my list!!

Agreed! So many islands, and destinations within Greece to explore, it’s definitely difficult to choose. Hydra is a great choice though :)

' src=

Greece is an amazing destination with multifarious tourist attractions. Handpicking a few prime tourist attractions for a short visit is a cumbersome task.

Absolutely, you could spend a lifetime exploring and still want to head back for more! Glad you enjoyed the post John :)

I am headed to Athens in a couple of weeks and plan to do multiple day trips to a few of the islands. What is the best way to find ferry information? Can most of the islands be navigated by walking or will additional transportation need to be accounted for? Thanks! ~Di

Hi Di, so the main port in Athens is Piraeus, though there are two others as well (Rafina and Lavrion). Piraeus has ferries to the majority of islands though.

For finding schedules and booking your ferry tickets online there are a couple of different websites you can use to compare prices and book:

http://www.greekferries.gr http://www.ferriesingreece.com http://www.ferries.gr http://www.letsferry.gr http://www.greeceferries.com http://www.ferryconnection.com

Re navigating each island, most of the options Marissa has detailed here are pretty navigable on foot, though if you’re considering other islands it’ll just depend on your choice, so definitely worthwhile doing a quick check before you book :)

Have an amazing time!

Island Hopping in Greece: Your Ultimate 7 Day Vacation Itinerary

  • Updated on: July 29, 2021

This article may contain affiliate links.  For more information, please see our disclaimer  here.

Table of Contents

There are no islands in Greece too small or too large to conquer. Whether in the Aegean or the Ionian Seas, your Greece itinerary should consist of the best Greek islands to visit. On the one hand, there are cosmopolitan islands, and on the other, there are islands with unspoiled beaches and pure natural beauty.

We’ve been to Greece a couple of times and have seen several islands. That way we can tell you that Greece can keep you busy exploring forever. It’s impossible to visit all islands in one go, but to help you out we’ve created 4 itineraries of 7 days that cover the most iconic Greece islands. From there it’s up to you which itinerary you choose to do, or to combine any if you have more time to spend in this beautiful country!

But first things first! Let’s have a look at things you need to know about island hopping in Greece!

Things to know about island hopping in Greece

Island hopping in Greece is a sure way to endless fun, as you explore the best Greek islands and sign up for the best Greek tours. However, some things need to be mentioned, first. For instance, keep an eye out for ferry routes, as not all islands are connected. What a bummer, I know, but that’s how things are. In addition, keep in mind that a ferry ticket is usually more expensive than a flight ticket. That said, if you intend to come to Greece with a lot of luggage, a ferry might be the better choice.

One of the best pieces of advice that I can give you is to book ferry tickets in advance, especially when visiting the more popular islands in the high season. A little planning is more than necessary to avoid getting disappointed. So, considering how touristic the Greek islands are, it’s almost impossible to go with the flow when island hopping.

Island Hopping Greece

I understand that traveling costs time and that it’s exhausting, at times, too! It’s perfectly normal to want to relax during your holiday. Therefore, don’t try to visit 5 islands in just 7 days. Pick the ones you find more interesting, and spend at least 2 to 3 days on each.

Last but not least, it’s definitely more expensive to bring a car on a ferry than to rent a new one on every island. Auto Europe is my recommendation for car rental! Remember, though, that public transport is satisfactory on most Greek islands, too.

How to reach Piraeus port

Ferry Island Hopping Greece

Since most ferries to the Greek islands embark from Piraeus, you need to know how to find the biggest port of Greece and the third busiest in the world. To arrive at Piraeus from the center of Athens or Athens International Airport (El. Venizelos), you take either a taxi, the metro, or bus. For a taxi, expect to pay up to €50 per ride, while a ticket for the metro costs €1.40. Meanwhile, if you opt for a bus (be on the lookout for the X96), a bus ticket costs €6.00. The time to reach Piraeus varies depending on the traffic. A typical journey may take 30 to 45 minutes.

Itinerary 1: Islands close to Athens

Let’s begin our island hopping in Greece with the islands closest to the Greek capital, Athens!

There are two categories of islands close to Athens, the Athenian escapade islands of the Argolic/Argo Saronic Gulf, Hydra and Spetses, and the famous ones of the Cyclades, Mykonos, and Santorini.

Reaching the islands of the Argolic Gulf is a piece of cake. Both are easily reachable by ferry from the Piraeus Port. From Piraeus, there are Catamaran and Flighting Dolphin departures to Spetses. On top of this, you use your own car to reach the island. Take the national road, cross the Corinth Isthmus, and head to the exit for Ancient Epidavros. Drive to Kranidi, Porto Heli, and Kosta. Once there, you can take the sea taxi that will bring you to Spetses in 5 minutes. Likewise, Hydra is reachable by ferry from the Piraeus port.

To arrive at the islands of the Cyclades, you have the option of flying on an airplane. Mykonos and Santorini have designated international airports, so taking a plane to visit them is very convenient. That said, Naxos isn’t reachable by airplane but by sea. Frequent service by ferry and catamaran is available from both Mykonos and Santorini and vice versa if you opt to travel to Naxos first via Piraeus or the Rafina port.

Hydra Greece Island Hopping

The island has a charming and friendly atmosphere and is the first choice among Athenians for a short escapade. Over the years, Hydra has been a retreat for famous personalities, such as Greek opera singer Maria Callas , billionaire Aristotle Onassis , and Candian poet Leonard Cohen . With sumptuous stone mansions, modest churches, a wonderful waterfront, and donkeys walking around, Hydra is reminiscent of a fairytale!

  • Climb the bastions: To protect themselves from the Ottoman Empire fleets in the 18th Century, Hydra secured the use of cannons. They were an essential precaution and can still be seen today on the sides of the harbor. Climbing the bastions gets you a fascinating view of the Aegean sea.
  • Day cruise to the Saronic Islands : What’s better than visiting Hydra? Going on a scenic day trip from Athens, and experiencing the fabulous islands of Poros and Aegina, too. That’s the best bang for your buck!

Where to stay

  • Kostis Villas
  • Hotel Mistral

This is an island with a naval tradition and a cosmopolitan character. Like Hydra, Spetses is a popular weekend destination in summer for Athenians, and a great traveling choice if you are island hopping in Greece.

  • Bouboulina Museum : The most interesting sightseeing in Spetses is the Museum of Bouboulina, the home of the heroine of the Greek War of Independence originating from Spetses.
  • Cave of Bekiris : A gorgeous cave, albeit a bit challenging to access. You can visit it by boat or use the track path from Agioi Anargyroi beach. There’s a sandy beach inside and formations of stalagmites and stalactites.
  • Lighthouse: Located near the old harbor, it’s one of the oldest lighthouses ever operated in Greece.
  • Spetses Hotel

Mykonos Island Hopping Greece

The most glamorous of the Greek islands, and one of the hottest tourist destinations in the world, Mykonos is one-of-a-kind. With iconic windmills, boutique shops, flower-filled lanes, and golden beaches with crystal waters, Mykonos is a masterpiece.

  • Windmills: The picturesque whitewashed windmills are one of the principal landmarks of the island. Visiting them, therefore, should be a priority and one of the main things to do in every traveler’s itinerary!
  • Little Venice : Cushioned in Mykonos Town, Little Venice is a unique location known for its romantic aura. Some of the most idyllic sunsets can be experienced there, under the picturesque balconies of traditional Cycladic houses perched just above the Aegean Sea.
  • Cruise to Rhenia Island and Delos : Sign up for this tour to explore the archaeological site of Delos, the birthplace of Apollo. At the same time, enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the Aegean near the uninhabited Rhenia island.
  • Matogianni Hotel
  • Anna Maria Mykonos Hotel
  • Flaskos Suites

Naxos Greece Island Hopping

Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, and one of the most beautiful Greek islands, too. Overshadowed by the super famous Santorini and Mykonos, Naxos is relatively unknown. And definitely, one you don’t want to miss when island hopping in Greece.

  • Cedar Forest : Above the white sand and pristine waters of Alyko beach, there’s a unique cedar forest with fascinating sand dunes. Close by, there’s also an abandoned hotel repurposed into a public gallery for street artists.
  • Venetian Castle : Located in Chora, the capital of the island, this is one of the most well-preserved Venetial castles in the Cyclades. Inside, there are Roman Catholic monasteries and schools, the Archaeological Museum of Naxos, antique shops, and a café operating since 1739!
  • Admire the sites: Naxos is packed with major sites, such as Kouros of Melanes, Demeter Temple, Panagia Drosiani Church, Kalamitsia Monastery, and Kouros at Apollonas. These statues and buildings are very important to Naxian History and must be admired.
  • Go for hiking: A beloved activity on the island of Naxos is hiking. Trekking on the top of Mount Zas , the highest Mount of Cyclades, or going on a hike near the Potamia village is an adventure you won’t regret! On that note, do check out my informative Greece hiking guide to know the best hiking places of this magnificent country!
  • Day cruise to Rina Cave and Koufonissi : Hop on a sailboat and go for a cruise to Rina Cave and the islands near Naxos, such as Koufonissi.

Santorini (Thera)

Santorini Greece Island Hopping

One of the most renowned holiday destinations worldwide and the most visited Greek island, by far, Santorini, is a magical place, offering the most dramatic views of the Aegean! The Santorini volcano, the enormous cliffs dotted with Cycladic whitewashed houses, and the breathtaking sunsets are some of the reasons you’re going to love this island!

  • Enjoy the Hiking Trail Fira-Oia : This is the most known hike on Santorini, and it will lead you throughout the villages of Fira, Firostefani, and Imerovigli as you go higher above the caldera. Eventually, you end up in Oia via a spectacular path. On your way to the top, you get dramatic views of the volcano, the caldera, and the deep blue Greek sea.
  • Akrotiri Archaeological Site : Don’t miss out on seeing the excavations of the prehistorical Akrotiri settlement. It’s a must-see site for history lovers!
  • Volcanic Island cruise : Considering that Santorini was formed from a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, going on a cruise to admire the volcanic islands of the region is a must-do activity for any traveler. Plus, you get to swim in incredible hot springs, too!
  • Wine tour : Santorini is famed for its Assyrtiko wine, where the vines are trained in a basket shape to protect the grapes from the intense winds. Sign up for this tour to taste the island’s viticulture and have an exclusive look at 2 different local wineries. Don’t skip this tour, if island hopping brings you to Santorini!
  • Smaragdi Hotel
  • Villa Manos
  • Hotel Kalimera

Itinerary 2: The Ionian Islands in the West

The Ionian islands are in Western Greece. You can reach them either by airplane or ferry. There are airports in most of the Ionian islands, such as Corfu, Cephalonia, and Zakynthos which makes them perfect for quick and easy island hopping.

The airports receive domestic flights from Athens and Thessaloniki. From abroad, however, there are only charter flights during the summer season. As to the ferries, they are operated from ports in Western Greece. Ferries from Patra go to Cephalonia, while from Igoumenitsa, you can take a ferry to Corfu. To visit Zakynthos by ferry, however, you have to take one from Killini.

This is one of the most romantic Greek islands of the Ionian island group. Amidst rich green hills, grand mansions, unique museums, and idyllic beaches, Corfu is a seriously brilliant destination! Combining elements from the Venetians, the British, and the French, Corfu is charming, reminiscent of past empires and cultures.

  • Achillion Palace : One of the top places to visit in Corfu, the Achillion Palace is the former retreat and residence of Princess Sissi of Austria, and where the late King Phillip of Britain, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, was born.
  • The Liston : Unwind by taking a slow and gratifying walk at the Liston, the iconic pedestrian street. Constructed by the French in the 1880s, the Liston imitates the rue de Rivoli street in Central Paris.
  • Casa Parlante : A 19th Century noble mansion comes to life, as it features, animatronic figures, period interiors, and objects. Casa Parlante delivers a true insight into bygone Corfu.
  • Corfu Aquarium : Relatively unknown, the Corfu Aquarium is an incredible place to bring your kids. Plus, it’s in the Paleokastritsa area, just under the Paleokastritsa Monastery , one of the top tourist spots of Corfu.
  • Day cruise to Paxos, Antipaxos, and the Blue Caves : With this convenient day cruise, you can visit the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos. At the same time, explore the sea caves by boat, and stop for a swim in the town of Gaios.

Praised by multiple travel guides and homeland to the noted Navagio (Shipwreck) breach, Zakynthos is a breathtaking Greek island. Characterized by exotic beaches with fine white sands, emerald waters, and unparalleled nightlife, Zakynthos is packed with picturesque hilltop villages and fabulous monasteries, too.

  • Turtle Island : The Marathonisi, as it’s locally known, is a small islet with tropical beaches and numerous sea caves outside Keri Beach. As its name implies, sea turtles swim around, which is a magnificent spectacle! Turtle watching is seriously one of the best activities to do while island hopping.
  • History War Museum : Founded just in 2018, this small museum offers interesting pieces of Greece’s history during World War II.
  • Shipwreck (Navagio): This place is a must if you’re on the island. When you see pictures of the shipwreck, you believe that they’re digitally enhanced. But they’re not. That’s how breathtaking the Navagio is. To reach it, you’d need a car or take a boat.
  • Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa: That’s a magnificent Eastern Roman Church, located on the top of a mountain. It offers dramatic views of the Ionian sea. On the back of the monastery, there’s a rocky hill that you can climb if you’re into rock climbing.

  • Pansion Mary Studios

Cephalonia (Kefalonia)

Cephalonia (Kefalonia) Greece Island Hopping

With a scenic natural landscape with fascinating beaches, secret underground caves, and charming fishing villages, Cephalonia is an incredible destination for island hopping in Greece. Nature enthusiasts will absolutely love it!

  • Sea kayaking: Pay a visit to the Sea Kayaking Kefalonia to book a kayak trip or kayak course in the warm Mediterranean waters of the Ionian and explore the Cephalonia’s scenic coastline and calm waters. If friends ask you what to do in Greece, tell them to go kayaking. It’s that good!
  • Visit the caves: Cephalonia is renowned for two of the most incredible caves in Europe, the Cave Lake of Melissani and the Drogarati stalagmitic cavern. The latter is known as the Concert Cave, too, due to having unbelievably good acoustics.

So, if you’re going to Cephalonia, don’t miss out on sailing to Ithaki, an island with deep Ancient Greek roots.
  • Terra Mare Hotel
  • Garbis Villas
  • Zest @ Xi Beach

Itinerary 3: The Dodecanese Island Group in the East

Booking a flight to Rhodes, Kos, and Ikaria is a piece of cake. The Dodecanese islands receive domestic flights from Athens all year round, and in summer, they also receive charter flights from abroad. To reach the islands by ferry, one has to go to Piraeus. From there, there’s an abundance of ferries to the Dodecanese. That said, be warned, as the trips from Piraeus to the Dodecanese are long and exhausting. Additionally, there are ferries to island groups from Agios Nikolaos and Sitia in Crete, but in summer.

As a final note, there are also ferries to Turkey in summer. Tourists residing in Kos may take the ferry to Bodrum , while those in Rhodes may visit Marmaris. Both of these ferries carry passengers and cars.

Rhodes Greece Island Hopping

Known also as the Knights Island , Rhodes has a rich past. Filled with historical monuments and buildings, Rhodes Old Town has a heavily influenced medieval atmosphere. Stone-paved alleys, glorious mansions, and imposing walls take travelers back in time to the age of the noble knights!

  • Palace of Grand Master : The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes is one of the grandest places to visit in the world! History is reviving in the whole structure itself. On top of this, the Knights’ Castle has imposing gates, exciting fortifications, charming mosaics, and a beautiful courtyard.
  • Kalithea Springs : Since Antiquity, the waters of Kallithea have been famed for their beneficial qualities. Visit these baths for a rejuvenating experience!
  • Day trip to Halki island : Sign up to embark on a day trip to the picturesque Halki island and the colorful Valley of the Butterflies, a natural paradise and a reproduction spot for butterflies. One of the best Greece tours, for sure.

  • Roselands Hotel Bungalows
  • Paradise Hotel
  • Aegean Houses

Ikaria (Icaria)

Island Hopping Ikaria (Icaria)

Located on the Eastern Aegean, Ikaria is a worldwide famous island due to its natural beauty and the longevity of its inhabitants. By far, Ikaria is the best place to recharge, away from the hectic routine. Time seems to have come to a stop, as the Ikarian people don’t seem to take life too seriously. As such, the laid-bad environment is the main reason why Ikaria has become so popular for island hopping in Greece.

  • Stone houses: Marvel at the Ikarian stone houses, constructed in such a way to resemble massive rocks. Ikarians used to hide inside to protect themselves from enemies.
  • Temple of Artemis: Ruins of a glorious Temple dedicated to Artemis, Goddess of Hunt.
  • Ancient Hot Springs : The Terma region in Ikaria has been known for hydrotherapy since the 4th Century BC. Just outside of Agios Kirikos, travelers can experience the same ancient hot springs!
  • Koskina Castle: That’s an Eastern Roman fortress built during the Crusades, standing atop a mountain. To reach it, you have to hike, but once on the top, take a breath and enjoy the breathtaking views above the valley.
  • Anthemis Hotel
  • Cavos Bay Hotel and Studios
  • Erofili Beach Hotel

Itinerary 4: The Northern Sporades

By far, the busiest airport of Sporades is in Skiathos. It receives domestic flights from Athens and Thessaloniki and, like most Greek islands, charter flights from abroad during summer. To arrive at the Sporades by ferry, you travel to the Volos and Agios Konstantinos ports in Central Greece. Ferries go to Skiathos, Skopelos, and the third island of the Sporades, Alonissos. As such, Central Greece is a perfect camp for island hopping.

Skopelos Greede Island Hopping

Skopelos is a picture-perfect island with an unspoiled charm, making it a great holiday destination. It has become internationally known as the filming location of the Hollywood movie Mamma Mia. In fact, the Church of Agios Ioannis Kastri, where the wedding scenes took place, is now known as the Mamma Mia Church!

  • Venetian Castle : Built on the ancient ruins of Peparithos city, this Venetian Castle is located inside the main town. It was built during the ruling of the Ghisi family, a Venetian noble family from Padua or Aquileia, in the 13th Century.
  • Pirate Graves : According to the legend, on the location Sendoukia (meaning treasure chests in Greek) at Mount Karia, there are pirate graves. On top of this, there are actual ancient graves carved on the rocks, on this spot, too.
  • Monasteries: This island is full of monasteries, perfect for pilgrimages. Travelers can visit the Monastery of Timios Prodromos , the Monastery of Evangelistria , the Monastery of Taxiarches, and the Monastery of Agia Varvara , to name a few. Most monasteries were erected in the Late Middle Ages.
  • Snorkeling: Skopelos has a couple of dive centers offering underwater experiences with snorkel tours in the open waters of the Sporades. They can be found in Panormos Bay, a famous destination for sailing.
  • The Mama Mia tour : Visit the Chapel of St. John (Ioannis), also known as the Mamma Mia wedding church, and enjoy a day full of adventure.
  • Artemis Bungalows
  • Aegean Wave Hotel
  • Aeolos Hotel

Skiathos Greece Island Hopping

As we said before, the Sporades group is great for island hopping in Greece. One of the most famous Greek islands of this island group is Skiathos. Tis island is packed with gorgeous pine trees and natural scenery, very distinctive to the barren mainland. Featuring countless beaches, Skiathos is a paradise for every nature lover. And thanks to its crazy nightlife, every summer, Skiathos attracts thousands of visitors, rivaling the islands of Mykonos and Santorini! Nevertheless, Skiathos is a fantastic destination for families, too. Include this isle in your Greece itinerary, no matter what!

  • Bourtzi : This is a small peninsula at the port entrance, dividing it into two district parts. A fortress used to be there in the 13th Century to protect the town, but only ruins are today. A popular pine-clad spot for recreation, nonetheless.
  • Biotope: Located in Strofilia Lagoon, the biotope is beautiful and peaceful.
  • House of Papadiamantis : Alexandros Papadiamantis was one of the most important modern Greek writers in the 19th Century, and his home has turned into a museum.
  • Sea Caves: They are on the northern side of the island and can be reached by boat. The wild landscape and the turquoise waters are breathtaking, for sure.
  • Act Art Skiathos
  • Takis Studios

A Local’s Perfect Greece Island Hopping Itinerary (Without the Crowds)

island hopping day trip from athens

Sharing is caring!

Greece is truly a dream vacation for almost everyone, and rightfully so: it’s gorgeous , the food is amazing, and you can find a wonderful balance of history, culture and relaxing on the beach. Seriously, what’s not to love?

But with more than 2,000 islands in Greece it can be a challenge to figure out where to go on a Greece island hopping vacation and how to allocate your time. I’ve asked Luca, an experienced Greek tour guide and travel planning expert with Go Ask A Local, to share one of his favorite Greek island hopping routes – right through his “backyard”! He’ll take you through a balance of must-see hot spots and off-the-radar locations during your 10 days in Greece itinerary.

Hey there, Greece travelers! My name is Luca and I am a tour guide based in the Cyclades islands. I live on Sifnos and Milos part of the year and in Athens during the off-season. I work all over the islands, but especially enjoy some of the more authentic ones that are less visited. Santorini, Mykonos, Ios, Naxos etc. are wonderful places, but during the summer season the crowds are so intense that they lose much of their charm. During high season, I always recommend to my clients that they spend time on some of the lesser-known islands where you’ll still get great food and beautiful beaches, but avoid the summer crush and get to see more authentic local life. With that in mind, this Cyclades island hopping itinerary will start with two days in Athens exploring its unparalleled history before setting off to the islands for a week. Our first stop is one day in Santorini before heading off to two of my favorite islands for the rest of the week: 3 days in Milos and 3 days in Sifnos. I’ve tried to include a balanced mix of sightseeing, time at the beach, culture and history, and downtime. Part of the beauty of a visit to Greece is taking things slowly and enjoying the pace of life here.

island hopping day trip from athens

For food, I think everyone should have at least a couple of meals at local tavernas where you’ll find traditional recipes, good service, and great prices. But you’re on vacation! So I also recommend a few places where you’ll get those sweeping views, beachside service, and creative twists on Greek cuisine. Now let’s look at the itinerary!

Quick Planning: What to book  NOW  for your Greece island-hopping itinerary

To avoid disappointment, extra expenses and last-minute schedule scrambles you’ll want to book as much of your 10 day Greece trip as possible well in advance. Go through this quick checklist and get everything arranged, then you can fill in the details later.

Transportation

  • Day 3: Fly Athens to Santorini (early morning)
  • Day 4: Ferry Santorini to Milos (mid-afternoon)
  • Day 5: Rental car (return in the evening)

  • Day 7-9: Rental car from Sifnos port
  • Day 10: Ferry Sifnos to Athens (morning), car service to Athens airport

Accomodations

What to pack

Book a photoshoot.

We always love to book a photoshoot when we’re traveling. As a mom, it’s tough to get in the photos since I’m always behind the camera. We use Flytographer to capture our memories. You can get $25 off your shoot by booking with this link or using code FAMILYVOYAGE.

Day 1 – Athens & The Acropolis

island hopping day trip from athens

Once you’ve settled in, the first thing to do is to visit the city’s symbol and landmark: the Acropolis with the Parthenon, the Theater of Dionysus, the Temple of Athena and the Erechtheion. Even without any background or history, the site is awe-inspiring. You’ll also get a feel for the vastness of the city, as from the top of the Acropolis you’ll have a 360 degree view over Athens in its entirety.

However, visiting it with a guide will help you appreciate it so much more. If you are traveling with kids and teens, a great option to keep the kids engaged is a mythology-focused tour . You’ll get to explore the sights and monuments of this ancient city explained through the lens of myths and fables.

Afterwards, I’d recommend an easy hike up the Philopappus hill. On the way up, you’ll be rewarded with a splendid view of the Acropolis.

For lunch, a light Greek meal in a traditional taverna in the lively area at the foot of the Acropolis is always great – and you won’t have to walk far. One of my favorites is Saita Tavern in Plaka. After fueling up, you can complete a trifecta of Athens hills, by climbing up to the top of Lycabettus Hill where you’ll finish the walk at a small church dedicated to Saint George. The top of the hill provides a totally different vantage point from which to marvel at Athen’s splendor. If another walk doesn’t appeal, you also have the option of taking the funicular (cable car) up.

island hopping day trip from athens

On the way down, be sure to stop for a coffee and snack (or a glass of wine, parents!) at the Dexameni café. Situated at the top of a steep staircase – which thankfully you’ll be going down instead of up – the café is in a small square popular with locals. It’s a great place to sit and watch Athenians visit with friends and family as they have for generations. And for the kids, there is also a lovely playground just in front of the square. After your break, just a few hundred meters away you’ll find a small but precious interactive museum dedicated to Ancient Greek technology, the Kotsanas Museum . You’ll be surprised to see the level of technology achieved by the ancient Greeks. The kids will also be delighted to get to test it out firsthand!

After, you might continue your Athens exploration on foot by walking to the National Garden and the Zappeio, a green oasis in the middle of the city center. It has a large collection of plants and  lots of space for kids to roam and play.

For dinner, I suggest the Café Avissinia which combines Acropolis views with delicious traditional food all in the buzzing Monastiraki area.

Where to stay: Look for a hotel near Syntagma Square or in the Koukaki neighborhood

Day 2 – Athens by the sea

island hopping day trip from athens

Athens’ chaotic cityscape and pulsating urban atmosphere make it easy to forget that the city center is a mere 10 km from the sea. Because of this, a visit to the nearby coast is often overlooked by most travelers, though it should not be.

For your second day, I’d suggest to start by visiting the  Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center . The program here changes frequently and there is always something great for the whole family. Additionally, the center’s location right on the water and adjacency to a large park make it a lovely place to visit. You can have a pleasant stroll exploring the garden and it’s collection of Mediterranean plants, enjoy the playgrounds, and in the summer months, the kids will love the water jets. Just remember to bring a change of clothes.

Next to the Center, you can find a couple of local fish tavernas. One of my favorites is “The Grandmother Elizabeth” for its simple yet delicious fare at very reasonable prices. If you want something a bit more upscale, just walk to the nearby Flisvos marina, where you have plenty of choices for a more exclusive lunch.

island hopping day trip from athens

In the afternoon, you could have a private tour to discover the Athenian Riviera. If you have a 3 or 4 people, consider this option that offers a flat rate. The tour will visit nearby towns and beaches, a thermal lake, and eventually the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio , which you’ll arrive at just in time for sunset.

For dinner, don’t miss the chance for a seaside meal near the temple. But, if you want to get back to the city, you have countless options. One I always like is Oinopoleion Taverna . Have an early night as tomorrow you’ll be taking off for the islands!

Day 3: Santorini

Santorini needs no introduction! You’ll depart by plane from Athens this morning and arrive in Santorini mid-morning.

island hopping day trip from athens

Morning

Start your day with an early flight from Athens to Santorini. While the ferry is more iconic, it takes 8 hours while the flight time is under 1 hour and can be found in advance for less than $50 – sometimes even under $10!

After arriving and dropping your luggage off at your hotel, start the day in Firá the capital village in the center of the island. Grab a snack in preparation for a light hike along the Caldera with sweeping views over the bay.

This is a leisurely walk which will take you through a number of charming villages. Remember that for most of the walk, you’ll have no shade. A hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water are musts. From Fira to Oia takes about 2.5 hours

Read more: What to pack for Greece in spring

Starting from Fira, you’ll follow along the Caldera rim first to Firostefani and then Imerovigli .  You should stop in both for a wander and a look around. Imerovigli is the last place you’ll be able to stop for lunch – check out Avocado for something fresh and light.

After lunch

Continue on your hike toward the picture-perfect town of Oia. It’s the reason most people come to Santorini!

This part of the path takes you out of the villages and along a trail with various lovely churches that you can visit. Over the next two hours, you will continue to have fantastic views over the water the whole time. From Imerovigli, the path heads uphill for a bit until you reach the second church, the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin. This is the most demanding portion of the hike, but shouldn’t be too bad.

Leaving the Chapel behind, you’ll start heading downhill to town. While Oia is famous for sunsets, in the evening the crowds can be intense with hundreds of people lining up to take photos. You won’t get that sunset shot, but it’s better to arrive at this time in the afternoon instead for a more peaceful visit.

Oia is a nice town and is worth wandering around and exploring it’s winding alleyways for a bit. Whenever you’re ready to leave, you can take the public bus or a taxi back to Fira. A taxi will cost you about 30 euros but it’s the fastest, simplest option to make the most of your one day on Santorini – especially so that you’ll be on time for your next activity!

Once back at your hotel, hang out and take a much-deserved break if you have time. This evening you’ll be going for a sunset cruise . You’ll go on a traditional wooden sail boat and have the opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the waters. This is a popular activity, so it’s best to reserve ahead . Most cruises last about 3 hours and you’ll be picked up and dropped off at your hotel. The transfer should be included in the price.

After the cruise, it’s time for dinner. Kapari Taverna in Fira is an excellent choice. While it doesn’t have a caldera view, the atmosphere is very nice and the food is fantastic. Definitely order mezedes (small shared plates) and be sure to try the fava (Santorinian split peas puree) as well as a glass of Assirtiko, the local white wine.

Where to stay : Book a hotel or room in Fira for the night

Day 4: Santorini to Milos

Today, you’ll spend the morning and lunch in Santorini before transferring by ferry to Milos. It’s best to get going early to make sure you have time for everything

island hopping day trip from athens

Start your day with a visit to the local Santorini archeological museum in Fira and then visit the stunning archeological site of Akrotiri . One ticket covers both sites and visiting them together will take you about 3 hours. It is wonderful to check out the museum first to see the artifacts and then head to the archaeological site afterwards because this allows you to fully picture what the site would have been like in Antiquity. Akrotiri is really best visited with a guide as they will provide fascinating history and context that you would otherwise miss. Plan to spend about 40 minutes in the museum and 1.5 hours at the archaeological site. The museum and site are 20 minutes apart by car and you should take a taxi between them rather than the bus to avoid wasting time.

Grab a taxi from Akrotiri back to your hotel. You should check out and head straight to the port which is where you’ll get the mid-afternoon ferry to Milos .

The port of Santorini is a bit out of the way and in an inconvenient spot. The road there can get very congested and lines are often long. You should plan to leave from Fira at least 2 hours before your ferry’s departure time to make sure you don’t miss it.

There are plenty of places around the port to grab a quick lunch, so eat here while you’re waiting for the ferry. I’d recommend booking your ferry with Sea Jets . The journey to Milos will take 2.5-3 hours and costs 60 euros per person. It’s a pleasant ride.

Evening

You’ll arrive to Milos around 5 PM. You should plan to stay in Adamantas , which is right next to the port so that on arrival you’ll be able to head to your hotel on foot. After check in, put on your swimsuits and then go for an evening swim at Lagada beach . It’s not the most beautiful beach on the island, but it’s a nice one and is super convenient to get to from town.

After your swim, it’s time for dinner at Mikros Apoplous . Small cheese pies and a fresh salad with local cheese are very nice and typical appetizers, but for your mains you should order seafood. You’re in the islands after all!

Where to say: Book a hotel in Adamantas for two nights

Day 5: Milos

Milos, like many of the Greek Islands, is characterized by intense volcanic activity. It’s known for its countless stunning beaches and the spectacular colors of its land.

island hopping day trip from athens

In Milos, it’s best to stay in the port-side town of Adamantas , which is close to the ferry terminal and other convenient amenities.

Spend today exploring the northern beaches of the island, which are easiest to access if you have your own means of transportation. First thing in the morning, head over to the port to pick up a rental car , scooter, or motorbike for today’s adventure.

The first stop is at Sarakiniko beach, which is one of the most famous beaches in all of Greece. It has a spectacular lunar landscape that is otherworldly. There’s no shade here, so it’s best to arrive earlier in the day and spend an hour or two swimming and snapping photos before it gets too hot. Whenever the temperature starts to rise, leave Sarakiniko behind and continue onward to Mytakas and Alogomandra beaches, followed by Kapros and its rock sculptures.

There are many little tavernas & beach cafes along the way from Mytakas to Kapros, so just stop for lunch whenever you’re feeling hungry. There’s one in particular that has fantastic sea views overlooking Alogomandra. You’ll know it when you see it!

When you’ve finished exploring Kapros, keep going toward Pollonia, making stops at any beaches that pique your interest along the way. It should be early evening by now, so this will be your last chance for swimming. In Pollonia make your way to Yialos for an excellent seafood dinner. In my opinion this is the best restaurant on the island, so be sure to make a reservation ahead of time.

Pollonia is perfect for a post-dinner evening stroll, so take time to enjoy a walk along the seaside before getting back in your car (or scooter!) and returning to the hotel in Adamantas.

Where to stay: Adamantas

Day 6: Milos

Enjoy a day on the water sailing around the island

island hopping day trip from athens

Morning & Afternoon

Get ready for an unforgettable all-day boat tour on a beautiful old wooden sailboat, Thalassitra . The tour takes you all around the island and allows you to see the full majesty and geological variety of Milos. The boat can accommodate 30-40 people, and it’s usually quite full, but not unpleasantly so. There are plenty of other boat tours to choose from, ranging from catamarans to sailboats, and a mixture of group and private but Thalassitra is excellent.

A boat-trip is the perfect way to explore the southwestern part of Milos, which is largely inaccessible by car or on foot. One of the highlights of the tour is Kleftiko Bay, which is one of the most beautiful areas of the island and is only reachable by boat. Along the way, you’ll make ample stops for swimming and snorkeling, and you’ll have a delicious lunch served right on board. The tour departs from the port daily at 9:00 am and lasts 10 hours.

island hopping day trip from athens

You should be arriving back to port around 7:00 pm, which is the perfect time for an evening stroll in the ancient village of Plaka, the most beautiful in Milos. To get to there from the port you can take a taxi or bus, which will take 10-15 minutes.

It will be approaching sunset by the time you get to the village, so start walking directly to Kastro Fortress for unbelievable sunset views. On the way up, you’ll pass by a small chapel that’s worth stopping at.

After watching the sunset, come back down to the village for dinner. Most of the restaurants here are very high quality, so you should just sit down at the first one that inspires you. Avli is a particularly good small, charming taverna.

After dinner, take a taxi back to your hotel. If you’ve still got the energy and would like a nightcap, Mikro Café is a nice bar with good music and lovely views over the port. There are some other pleasant bars in this area if you’d like to make a night of it.

Milos Family Ideas

The Thalassitra cruise that is already mentioned on day 6 is a very nice family activity. Everything is organized by the crew, the swimming spots are calm and protected, and the entire day is taken care of for you.

The Mining Museum of Milos (in the port town Adamantas) is a small, nice museum (1 hour visit avg.) to learn about the rocks and geologic composition of the island. You’ll get interesting explanations for why the many beaches of the island and their rocks and sand are different colors. You can also find info about various self-guided geological walks that can be done.

A day trip to the tiny island of Kimolos is a very pleasant family excursion. You can visit the nice town of Chora and have a swim in some beautiful sandy beaches such as Prassa or Bonatsa. It’s a day excursion and the ferry travel time takes less than half an hour each way. Ferries depart from the port of Pollonia on the Milos-Kimolos line with daily service.

Day 7: Milos to Sifnos

Sifnos is home to sandy beaches, incredible food, and the iconic Chrysopigi church. Popular with Greeks, Sifnos is still off most international tourists’ radar – that’s part of what makes it one of the best Greek islands to visit.

island hopping day trip from athens

Catch a mid-morning ferry to Sifnos . In the summer there are 5 or 6 departures daily, which leave throughout the morning and then again in the afternoon. The number of daily departures decreases as you move out of high season, so it’s always best to check the schedule. The high-speed ferries take about 40 minutes and are the best choice.

Plan to arrive to Sifnos around 11:00. Rent a car at the port , as this will give you freedom to explore the island. Elmar-Sifnos is one reputable company. While Sifnos does have a good public bus system, and you certainly can get around the island exclusively by bus, you’ll lose lots of time and will be on a more restricted schedule. Some places will not be reachable by public transport. A car is best.

Once you’ve got your car, head to Artemonas village, which is where you should plan to stay. For lodging, Hotel Artemon is one good option. It is a traditional Greek style hotel with a fantastic taverna. In general, there’s a good selection of hotels in the village, most of which are small (8-12 rooms) and family-run. You can also consider a vacation rental if you’d like more space.

island hopping day trip from athens

After checking in at your hotel, drop off your bags, put on your swimwear, and get ready to head to the beach. First up is the beautiful beach at Chrysopigi , where you can swim, relax in the sand, and pay a visit to the stunning Monastery of Chrysopigi. This is one of the most photographed places in all of Greece. Once you’ve seen it for yourself you will understand why! From the monastery, walk along a small bridge to reach the nearby church which sits on its own little island. After admiring the church, if you’re up for it take the path down to the water and go for a swim along the rocks.

Once you’ve finished visiting the Monastery and church complex, it’s time for lunch. Apokofto is an excellent small restaurant right next to the beach that serves traditional foods and extremely fresh fish (especially in summer). After a delicious lunch, head to Faros beach (on foot) for some more swimming and lounging. Faros can be reached from Chrysopigi via a lovely little path that takes about 20 minutes to walk. Leave your car and work off some of the calories from lunch. Spend a few more hours enjoying this beautiful beach and the crystal-clear water, grabbing a drink at one of the beachside tavernas, and relaxing. Whenever you’re ready to go, take the path back to Chrysopigi to get the car and return to Artemonas.

After a day in the sun, relax at the hotel before a stroll. There’s one main road through Artemonas and the early evening is a lovely time for a wander. Take your time and be sure to browse through the traditional shops and bakeries. They’ll all be open until about 9:30 pm, which is when most Greeks will start thinking about dinner.

Speaking of dinner, tonight you should eat at Xryso which serves very traditional cuisine. The restaurant is in the courtyard of an old house and has a wonderful ambiance. From your table, you’ll be able to see the vegetable garden where much of the restaurant’s produce (your dinner!) comes from. A few dishes to try here are the chickpea soup (which is slowly cooked in a wooden oven), mastelo (lamb or goat baked in red wine), and kaperosalata (an onion and caper leaves spread).

Where to stay: Hotel Artemon or vacation rental

Day 8: Sifnos

Ancient ruins, beautiful beaches, and traditional ceramics

island hopping day trip from athens

Morning

Have breakfast at your hotel and then hop in the car and head to the ancient Mycenean acropolis of Agios Andreas . Plan to spend about an hour here exploring the acropolis and visiting the museum to see the many artifacts found onsite. When you’ve finished at the acropolis, the nearby Church of St. Andrew is a lovely Cycladic church which is well worth a visit.

From here, head on to the gorgeous beach at Vathi Bay . Stretching for more than a kilometer, this is one of Sifnos’ most beautiful beaches. While neighboring beaches can get quite wavy when it’s windy, the protected waters of this cove are almost always perfectly calm. Whenever you’re feeling hungry, you can have lunch right on the beach with your feet still in the sand at Tsikali . The food here is delicious and the scenery cannot be beaten. It’s truly lovely. The restaurant also produces its own cheese, so be sure to get some.

island hopping day trip from athens

Sifnos is well-known for its quality ceramics production, so after lunch make your way to a traditional pottery workshop called Atsonios Ceramics , about 5 minutes from Vathi. Here you can view a demonstration and, if you’re lucky, even create something yourself. The kiln used here is the oldest one on the island and is still entirely wood fired. Even if you don’t get a chance to make something yourself, pottery fans will surely find something to bring home.

At this point, you have two options: either head back to the beach or return to Artemonas. If you go back to Artemonas, you’ll have a couple of hours to relax at the hotel and enjoy the village. In the early evening, take a leisurely 15-minute walk to Apollonia, which is the heart of the island in the evenings. In Apollonia you’ll find good shopping and restaurants, as well as bars and nightlife. The commercial area is found on one principal street which is usually filled with a veritable river of people. Locals and tourists alike come here to stroll, shop, and dine.

For dinner, consider Cayenne Restaurant . This is a more upscale spot which exclusively uses local ingredients but with innovative and modern twists. After dinner, you might have a drink or a cocktail at Botzi 93 . Be sure to head up to the roof for fresh air and beautiful views.

Day 9: Sifnos

Fishing villages, calm waters, and Medieval history in Kastro

island hopping day trip from athens

Start your day with a visit to the Agios Simeon Monastery and its stunning view. This is the second highest church on the island (and the highest one reachable by car) and has spectacular views over the surrounding waters. Enjoy the view, and then continue on to the small fishermen’s village of Hersonissos and its fjord like bay. There’s a small beach here where you can go for a swim. It’s especially attractive on windy days as unlike nearby beaches, the sea here will remain calm.

Hersonissos is still an active fishing village, so you’ll see boats coming and going with their catch. Adjacent to the beach is another nice ceramic workshop well worth checking out. There are a few nice tavernas right in town, so get lunch at one of them whenever you’re hungry and done enjoying the beach.

Afternoon

island hopping day trip from athens

Drive back to Artemonas and get ready for a nice, easy hike. You’ll go first to Poulati Rock (where you can also take a dip), before continuing along the shoreline and up to the medieval village of Kastro. In Kastro, you can enjoy an aperitif at Loggia which sits directly in front of the beautiful chapel of Epta Martyres.

Enjoy a casual late afternoon with a few drinks and a wander around Kastro, before meandering over to Seralia , which used to be Kastro’s port. Here you can have a fantastic seafood dinner right next to the waves at Captain Sifakis . It’s the perfect way to cap off your incredible Greece island hopping vacation!

Unfortunately, you’re leaving tomorrow so after dinner it’s time to pack your bags. In the morning you’ll be catching a ferry back to Athens for your return flight home!

Sifnos Family Ideas

Sifnos Horseback Riding – They offer short, accompanied rides for all levels (30 minutes) and suitable also for children and beginners. You go on a circular journey through the alleyways of the village of Katavati. For children  over 12 with a bit of experience there is also a very nice 1,5 hr tour on one of the island’s main hiking trails. You stop for a refreshment break in the courtyard of a small church situated in a low conifer forest. This activity is good for the mornings (not too late, due to the heat).

Family Farm visit wih a cooking lesson – This is a half-day activity. After a brief introduction, the meal planning starts. On a walk through the farmstead you´ll choose and pick the ingredients for your meal. Once back in the farmhouse you will start the preparing the ingredients before cooking them. The experience ends at the kitchen table where you’ll get to enjoy the fruits of your labor. This is a perfect opportunity to learn about typical products of the island, their seasonality, and the simplicity of preparing amazing traditional Greek dishes.

Ceramic workshop –  Sifnos is the island of the potters. Wherever you´ll go, every artisan will be glad to show their art and their creations. For children, there are special workshops where they can paint their own ceramics. After, the object (cups, salad bowls, plates, etc..) will be fired and become a unique souvenir of Sifnos you can bring home with you. It takes about 1.5/2 hours on average and is great for both children and adults.

Hiking – There are more than 100km of hiking trials. Some of them are perfectly suitable for families!

Day 10: Return to Athens

island hopping day trip from athens

While today will be more about transportation than sightseeing, it’s important to account for in planning your 10 day trip to Greece. You’ll probably want to book one of the morning ferries from Sifnos to Athens . The trip should take around 2.5 hours, though allow plenty of time before your flight from Athens back home in case of delays. There is also a less expensive “slow ferry” that takes more than 5 hours, but I don’t recommend that unless you are very prone to sea sickness; that is also a less common service and arrives at night. Note that there is no airport on Sifnos.

If you’ve taken a mid-morning ferry from Sifnos to Athens, you can choose from many small restaurants near the port to get lunch. For those with a later flight departing from the Athens airport, there’s even the small Piraeus Museum within walking distance (and tickets are just a few Euros). Alternatively, the Hellenic Maritime Museum offers an interesting look at Greece’s maritime history over thousands of years; it’s a little bit of a longer walk, so consider how much luggage you have with you and how much time you have.

Allow at least 45 minutes to get from Piraeus Port to Athens airport if you’re going by car. The most efficient option is to book a car service ahead of time with Welcome Pickups . They charge the same rate as a taxi and an English-speaking driver will be waiting for you! For a later flight, you even have the option to turn your ride into a sightseeing excursion.

9 of the best day trips from Athens

Feb 10, 2024 • 7 min read

island hopping day trip from athens

From Nafplio to Hydra, here are the best day trips from Athens © margouillat photo/ Shutterstock

A world-class city, Athens  is crammed with attractions and entertainment that can fill weeks of any visitor's time.

But a number of other outstanding destinations are located within easy reach of the Greek capital – whether you travel by public transportation , by boat or with your own wheels. From ancient ruins to island beaches, these day trips from Athens are well worth the journey.

1. Visit the picturesque former capital, Nafplio

Travel time: 2 hours 10 minutes

Nafplio , the first capital of modern Greece, is one of the prettiest towns in the country, with splendid Venetian and neoclassical architecture and fortresses like the hilltop Palamidi (a famous 999-step climb) or Bourtzi (a small fortified islet in the harbor). Plenty of elegant boutique hotels, tasteful shops and small restaurants hidden in narrow alleys make Nafplio a hugely popular destination for a day hop or a longer stay.

Further south is the posh resort of Porto Heli, where Greek and international jet-setters own luxurious villas and mansions. The region also has some agreeable sandy beaches and numerous local wineries, many open to the public.

How to get to Nafplio from Athens: By car, the journey is around one hour and 45 minutes. The intercity bus from Athens Kifissos station to Nafplio takes two hours and 10 minutes.

Colorful wooden boats docked in a small island harbor

2. Aegina is the perfect Greek island getaway

Travel time: 40 minutes / 1 hour 15 minutes

A trip to Aegina is the quickest way to find yourself on an island if you're staying in Athens. The Saronic Gulf island boasts a perfect combination of important ancient ruins, attractive sandy beaches, charming neoclassical architecture and local delicacies like the internationally renowned local pistachio variety.

Outside the picturesque Aegina Town, the Temple of Aphaia , which is among the country's top ancient sites, and the villages of Agia Marina and Perdika are also worth a visit. The huge Orthodox church of Agios Nektarios is a popular pilgrimage destination among both Greek and foreign visitors. Avoid the summer weekends if you can, as the island gets packed with Athenians escaping the city heat.

How to get to Aegina from Athens:  Take the ferry (one hour and 15 minutes) or the hydrofoil (40 minutes) from the harbor of  Piraeus . Departures are frequent, and there's no need to book in advance.

The well preserved remains of an ancient stone theatre on a mountainside; there is a lovely view down into a green valley below, surrounded by further mountain peaks.

3. Soak up the mythology at Delphi

Travel time: 3 hours

It might be on the long side for a day trip, but spending time in beautiful Delphi  is worth the journey. Myths, history and spectacular mountains combine here – in Greek mythology, the two eagles released by Zeus met there, determining the Navel (or center) of the World. The Sanctuary of Apollo , built in the 7th century BCE, was a revered ancient oracle and home to Pythia, the priestess who mumbled her notoriously ambiguous answers on important or everyday matters to visitors from every walk of life.

A stadium high on the hill, an ancient theater and Tholos (a circular temple, probably the most photographed landmark of the site), together with a small but significant museum , keep attracting modern-day crowds. The idyllic clifftop village on the slopes of Mt Parnassos, overlooking the endless olive groves that surround the sanctuary, is buzzing with taverns and souvenir shops catering to day trippers.

How to get to Delphi from Athens:  Take the KTEL intercity bus  from Athens Liosion station to Delphi. Travel time is around three hours.

4. Walk in the footsteps of ancients in Corinthia

Travel time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Within the modern village of Corinthia loom the extensive yet compact ruins of this ancient (mostly Roman) city. Home to legendary Jason of the Argonauts, stealer of the Golden Fleece, the streets of Ancient Corinth were once trodden by the likes of Pausanias, Roman travelers, and St Paul, who taught the gospel of Christ here.

Follow in their footsteps by visiting the Temple of Apollo, the Peribolos of Apollo, the ancient theater and other highlights. The excellent on-site museum puts everything into context.

How to get to Ancient Corinth from Athens: Intercity buses depart hourly from Athens Kifissos station, arriving at the Korinthos bus station in Corinth City, taking about one hour. From here, buses go to Ancient Corinth (20 minutes).

A hiker sits at the top of a mountain gazing out over the view of hills below

5. Hit the hiking trails of Mt Parnitha National Park

Travel time: 1 hour

Mt Parnitha, about 25km (15.5 miles) north of Athens, comprises a number of smaller peaks, the highest of which is Karavola (1413m/4636ft), tall enough to get snow in winter. There are many caves and much wildlife, including red deer, and the park is crisscrossed by hiking trails, with two large, full-featured hiking lodges. The area is popular for mountain biking as well.

The easiest way to explore is on the path (about a 45-minute walk) through Tatoi, the 40-sq-km (15-sq-mile) grounds of the former summer palace (closed); follow Tatoi Rd out of Varibobi and look for a small trail sign on the right.

How to get to Mt Parnitha National Park from Athens: Take the Metro's Green Line (Line 1) north to Nea Ionia, then take bus 724 to Thrakomakedónes. You can also continue on bus 724 to the Parnitha Funitel, which takes visitors to the top of the mountain.

The stones of an ancient settlement, surrounded in green grass

6. Imagine the sound of Homer at the World Heritage-listed Mycenae

Travel time: 1 hour 45 minutes

On a hilltop backed by powerful mountains stand the somber and mighty ruins of Ancient Mycenae, home of the legendary Agamemnon. For four centuries in the 2nd millennium BCE, this kingdom was the most powerful in Greece, holding sway over the Argolid and influencing other Mycenaean cities.

World Heritage–listed Mycenae is synonymous with the names Homer and Schliemann. In the 9th century BCE, Homer told in his epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey , of "well-built Mycenae, rich in gold." These poems were, until the 19th century, regarded as no more than gripping and beautiful legends. But in the 1870s, the amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann (1822–90), despite derision from professionals, struck gold, first at Troy and then at Mycenae.

Before exploring the archaeological site, head into the Ancient Mycenae Museum for context.

How to get to Ancient Mycenae from Athens: Daily KTEL intercity buses  depart from Athens to Fichti, the nearest town to Ancient Mycenae, on the Nafplio route.

Fishing boats in the harbour at Hydra, with the town's houses huddled on a hillside behind them.

7. Wander the car-free island of Hydra

Travel time: Almost 2 hours

Gorgeous Hydra is a rocky island with a rich history and spectacular, well-preserved stone mansions that once belonged to great naval families and captains of the Greek Revolution. The town is built on the hillside around a stunning harbor; it has a tranquil allure like no other Greek island, as it's completely car-free. Numerous small museums, art galleries and boutique hotels, together with the ever-present yachts docked in the harbor, contribute to its classy aura and more than make up for the lack of beaches.

How to get to Hydra from Athens:  Hydrofoils from the harbor of Piraeus take from one hour and 40 minutes to two hours. Buy tickets online  in advance.

8. Escape to the seaside restaurants of Halkida

Travel time: 30 minutes

Built on the channel that separates the island of Evia from the mainland, and famous for the six-hourly change in the direction of the water's flow, Halkida can't claim the title of tourist magnet by any means. Nevertheless, it's a pleasant seaside town worth visiting to enjoy a relaxing break from a hectic city-sightseeing itinerary and for a taste of Greek small-town life. There are also plenty of good, clean beaches nearby, as well as countless seaside restaurants where you'll enjoy extremely fresh seafood, with far more variety than you'll see in Athens.

How to get to Halkida from Athens:  Halkida is an hour's drive from Athens via the main motorway to Thessaloniki. It's also accessible by intercity bus from Athens terminal station or by train from Athens' central station.

Columned ruins right on the edge of the sea as the sun sets in the distance

9. Watch the sunset at Cape Sounion

Travel time: 2 hours (Cape Sounion), 45 minutes (Marathon)

You can easily spend a whole day at either of these close-by destinations, but if your schedule is tight, they both make perfect half-day trips. Cape Sounion, at the southernmost tip of Attica, is where the splendid Temple of Poseidon is located – this is one of the best spots around Athens to savor a gorgeous sunset. It can be combined with lunch or dinner at one of the many fish taverns in the nearby working-class town of Lavrio.

Northeast of Athens, Marathon is the site of one of the greatest battles in history and the place where the modern Athens Marathon commences, following the steps of Pheidippides, the legendary ancient courier who first ran the glorious route. The archaeological museum , the tomb of Athenians fallen in the battle, and the lake with its dam are the main attractions of the area.

How to get to Cape Sounion or Marathon from Athens: Cape Sounion is a two-hour bus ride from Athens, and Marathon is a 45-minute drive. Consider taking a taxi if you'd prefer not to drive yourself.

Athens main ports & how to get the greek islands near athens .

Fast Ferry Greece_Depositphotos_210680072_s-2019

The first thing to know when planning a trip to one (or more) of the Greek islands near Athens is that most of them don’t have an airport, so the ideal way to get there is by jumping on a ferry. There are three ports in Athens , each serving different islands.

The port of Piraeus is the biggest and best-known one, with ships sailing to hundreds of islands; both the ports of Lavrio and Rafina can be less crowded and easier to reach. They connect the capital to nearby islands and can be a good alternative if you reach them directly from the Athens International Airport .

Port of Piraeus

Piraeus is the chief port of Athens and the largest passenger port in Europe. And despite being such a huge place where getting lost could seem feasible, it is well organized and easy to navigate from one terminal to another. The port even offers a free shuttle bus service to take passengers from one terminal to the other.

If you’re planning trips to islands in the Saronic Gulf, the Cyclades , the Dodecanese, Rhodes, Crete , Kythira , and the islands on the Northern Aegean Sea, and Rhodes, you will undoubtedly depart from here.

Piraeus is located about 13 km from the center of Athens and can be easily reached from the center of town. Bus 049 departs every 20 minutes from Omonia, while Bus 040 departs every 15720 minutes from Syntagma Square. It’s also possible to get to Piraeus by train and — the most convenient means — by metro. You have to board your subway either at Monastiraki or Omonia stations. It will take a little more than 15 minutes to reach Piraeus metro station, just across the street from the port.

Athens International Airport is 35 km from Piraeus, so the trip takes longer, sometimes more than an hour. Although the bus’s cheapest option (Bus X96 departs every 15 minutes, the ticket costs 6 euros), the most comfortable way to travel is with the suburban train (10 euros).

A taxi or transfer service is more expensive (from 40 to 80 euros), but it’s ideal if you do not have so much time to spare.

Book your ferries in Greece here.

Port of rafina.

It’s Athens’ second-busiest port and is located 33 km east of the center of Athens. Since it is very close to Athens International Airport, it can be a great place to start your island journey. It is also possible to travel to some Greek Islands leaving from the Port of Rafina .

Due to its location, most travelers choose Rafina to travel from Athens to the northwestern Cyclades, including nearby Andros, Tinos, and Mykonos . Other island destinations reachable from this Athens port include Milos and Santorini , and there’s also a seasonal ferry to Crete .

The trip to Andros from Rafina takes only 1-2 hours, while Tinos can be reached in 2-3 hours. So, although Tinos is not the closest island to Athens, the location of this port puts Tinos among some of the closest islands to visit from Athens.

A taxi ride from the center of Athens takes approximately an hour, and the trip can cost up to 60 euros. The ride to Rafina Port from the city center takes about 90 minutes. An intercity bus departs from Pedion tou Aeros, and the ticket is 3 euro.

Port of Lavrio

The third port in importance, Lavrio, serves the routes connecting Athens to the Cyclades and the islands of the Northeast Aegean . Departing from the port of Lavrio works excellent for those traveling to some of the Cyclades, mainly Kea (Tzia) and Kythnos. The trip to Kea takes only an hour while reaching Kythnos can take up to 2.5 hours.

Since it is located about 60 km from the center of Athens, it might not be the most comfortable port for your departure. However, Lavrio is just 30 km from Athens International Airport.

The main ways to reach the port of Lavrio from the center of Athens are by taxi (from 60 to 80 euros) or with the intercity bus departing from Pedion tou Areos (departure is hourly, and the trip can take up to 2 hours, the ticket is 6 euro).

Getting to Lavrio from Athens Airport costs about 60 euros by taxi or bus (the ticket costs 5 euros and the journey is about an hour).

  • Vinita B 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Not worth the time or money The hop on hop off bus was fine, but the audio guide was the least informative I have ever experienced. The sunset "tour" was a bus ride with a prerecorded audio guide of the things along the way. Absolutely nothing interesting. Nothing about the temple of Poisidon. The "guide" said barely anything at all. They drop you off at about 6:30, and will get you again a bit after 8. The place it's self could be a half an hour stop, not that much to see. It's lovely, but could not justify spending so much time there. Very windy and cold, and the sunset is just a sunset. Every one was very underwhelmed. Would especially not recommend for kids. Very rocky and nothing to do but wait for nearly 2 hrs. Read more Written April 11, 2024

Their buses are very spacious and comfortable and the tour guides are very helpful, educate you about the city along the way, and always ensure everyone is onboard before leaving a location. We truly appreciated the kindness that two lovely ladies Irene and Nehad showed us because we were unsure about the meeting points, but they were patient and made sure we got on the bus in time to join the group and enjoy the trip. You feel safe and your items are safe on the vehicle as well. Read more Written April 1, 2024
  • 157stellaf 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Pure disaster…. Arrived 30mins early, were missed and forced to take a cab to the next stop. How could it happen??? The way the company handling this is blaming their own customer and said other people on the bus didn’t complain. Good job! Read more Written March 31, 2024
  • 50SustainableNomad 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do not use Sights of Athens! Overloaded bus, no control on numbers plus the Earphone Tour named stops with no description our tour guide we had been led to believe. Watch out for the difference in routes, promoted as 20min drop-off pick up yet coastal and port tours are actually only 4x daily! Book carefully and don’t listen to the sales leads at the stops. Very disappointed Read more Written March 29, 2024

  • 468abhishekm 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Quite pleasant for a half day solo travel Was pretty fun. As stated in the offer, an audio guide is provided which starts off by giving information about different areas of Athens the bus travels through. Once at the temple, plenty of time was given to walk around the hills to take in the amazing views, there are also some spots to enjoy the quiet and look at the sunset from. The guide was also awesome, informative and friendly. While the trip itself is over an audio guide, Nehad sprinkled in comments of her own which were very informative. It is a nice choice for a relaxing half a day trip (from 15:00 to around 20:15), though do your best to be informed about the weather. Read more Written March 27, 2024

Nehad went above and beyond to help me in every way possible and I’ve never had a tour guide or human being be as helpful as she has been during the duration of my tour and also after my tour ended! She’s a beautiful soul and an amazing tour guide!! I thank you Nehad and to my taxi driver for being so amazing! I Maybe even do the tour again on a hopefully less windy day simply because I loved every part of this magnificent experience& wouldn’t hesitate to experience it again 🤗😍❤️ Read more Written March 26, 2024

General Description

The largest island of Greece, Crete is a place that suits all tastes: whether you are looking for developed tourist resorts or quiet beaches, archaeological sites or fabulous nature, luxurious hotels or camping sites, then you have discovered the best place! Although Crete is surrounded by sea, the inland is mountainous and steep. The most popular towns are Heraklion and Chania . Heraklion is a large town with a Medieval fortress at the entrance of the port. In a short distance from Heraklion Town, there is the Minoan Palace of Knossos , which was covered by the volcanic ashes of Santorini in about 1,600 BC and was found almost intact by the archaeologists. Chania Town has a picturesque ambiance with the Venetian port, the lighthouse, and the Old Town. Close to both Heraklion and Chania, there are beautiful beaches to enjoy your days under the sun. Should you have time, you can drive around and discover the beauty that Crete has to offer.
