Jason Day hugs his son as he walks off a golf course in the rain.

Australian Jason Day has won his first PGA Tour event in five years, claiming the Byron Nelson for the second time in Texas and making for a special Mother's Day gift.

Key points:

  • Jason Day's caddy had Day's late mother's name printed on his bib
  • Day's wife, Ellie, is expecting their fifth child and he thanked her for all her sacrifices
  • The 2015 PGA Championship winner has battled injuries the past few years

The Byron Nelson was also Day's first victory way back in 2010, with this year's title — his 13th on tour — ending a long drought since his win at the Wells Fargo Championship in 2018.

In the intervening years he has struggled with injuries, particularly to his back, seeing him miss the cut three times in six majors from 2019 to 2021.

"It's been a struggling few years," Day said after holding off South Korea's Kim Si-woo and American 24-year-old Austin Eckroat.

Day finished with a bogey-free 9-under-par final round to finish 23-under for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Kim and Eckroat.

Adam Scott was in a tie for eighth, four strokes behind his compatriot.

Kim birdied the last to briefly join Day atop the leaderboard but the Queenslander held his nerve to respond and deliver his wife Ellie — who was greenside and heavily pregnant with the couple's fifth child — her own priceless Mother's Day gift.

In a poignant tribute, Day's caddy sported a bib with his late mother's birth name, Adenil, and the inspired former world number one honoured her memory in style.

"This was the first [Mother's Day] kind of without her so to have her on my caddy bib was special," Day said of his mother, known as Dening, who died in March last year.

"And then obviously Ellie, the amount of sacrifices she's made for me and my career, I just can't thank her enough."

In a huge confidence booster ahead of next week's US PGA Championship, the season's second major in New York, Day had only three bogeys for the week.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — Jason Day didn’t make the Mother’s Day connection until he saw his late mom’s name on the back of his caddie’s bib on the first green during the final round of the Byron Nelson.

That was just one more reason for the emotions to flow over the Australian’s first victory in five years.

Day shot 9-under 62 for a one-shot victory over Austin Eckroat and Si Woo Kim on Sunday, ending a drought plagued by health issues that overlapped with Dening Day’s long battle with lung cancer before her death a little more than a year ago.

“It was very emotional to go through and to experience what she was going through, then I had injuries on top of all of that going on in my life,” Day said. “It feels strange to be sitting here.”

Day, winless in 105 starts since the 2018 Wells Fargo, took his first outright lead from a large group of contenders when he broke a tie at 20 under with hometown favorite Scottie Scheffler with a chip-in for birdie at the par-4 12th.

It was the second-toughest hole of the week after being converted from a par-5 from the first two years the Nelson was held at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, about 30 miles north of Dallas.

Day finished 23 under while ending his victory drought the week before the PGA Championship. The only major among the 35-year-old’s 13 wins was the 2015 PGA.

Day’s first career PGA Tour victory came at the 2010 Nelson, and the victories kept coming until issues his back and vertigo had him on the verge of leaving the game in recent years.

“To be on the other side of it, be healthy, feeling good about my game, finally winning again,” Day said. “No better feeling, really.”

C.T. Pan finished at 21-under 263 with two eagles on the back nine in a career-low 62, driving the green on the par-4 14th and making a 24-foot putt. His eagle at the par-5 18th got him within a shot of Day.

Scheffler finished at 20 under with a final-round 65 after a par on 18, where a day earlier his second shot hit the lip of a fairway bunker and stayed in it on the way to a bogey.

The 2022 Masters winner was playing for the first time in a month coming off this year’s Masters and the RBC Heritage. He had the hometown spotlight to himself after three-time major winner Jordan Spieth withdrew because of a wrist injury.

“I feel like I played solid,” Scheffler said. “The things that I wanted to improve on over the last three weeks, I feel like I did a good job. I didn’t swing it my best this weekend, but I’m sure that’ll be an easy fix going into next week.”

Ryan Palmer, the 46-year-old Texan who lives not far from Craig Ranch, shot 68 and finished four strokes back while trying to become the oldest PGA Tour winner since Phil Mickelson won the 2021 PGA at 50.

With the heaviest rain coming down near the end of an off-and-on rainy final round, Day put his approach at 18 inside 3 feet. Kim’s short birdie putt forced Day to make his easy tap-in before he greeted his kids and wife, who is expecting their fifth child.

Kim, who shot 63 and was 22 under with Eckroat, was trying to make it four consecutive South Korean winners at the Nelson. Two-time defending champion K.H. Lee finished 11 under after a 67, his best round of the week.

Sung Kang was the 2019 winner. The Nelson was canceled because of the pandemic in 2020.

Eckroat, a 24-year-old rookie from Oklahoma seeking his first tour victory, was two shots back in the 18th fairway, but his approach landed 68 feet from the pin. The eagle bid was 6 feet short as Eckroat settled for a 65.

Day began the final round two shots back and was part of a six-way tie for the lead with the final group about to make the turn. Nine players were within a shot of the lead around the same time.

“I looked on hole nine and saw I don’t know how many guys, but 10, 15 guys had a chance to win realistically, and it was crazy,” Eckroat said. “You’re just trying to get up there, and it was fun to get some separation at the end and see if you could get a chance to win.”

China’s Marty Dou, playing on his home course and also seeking his first tour win while playing in the final group with Eckroat and Palmer, shot 67 to finish 20 under. Dou was the first to reach that mark before a double-bogey on No. 8 when his second shot went out of bounds over the green.

Scheffler, the second-ranked player who could have overtaken Jon Rahm for No. 1 with a victory, was joined at 20 under by Tyrrell Hatton, who was next on the world ranking list in the Nelson field at No. 17.

After five years and 105 starts, Jason Day a winner again

The rain couldn't put off Jason Day on the 18th hole during his victory at the Byron Nelson golf tournament in McKinney, Texas,

Playing on Mother’s Day a little more than a year after losing his mom to cancer, Day finished 23 under while ending his victory drought the week before the PGA Championship.

Day finished with a 9-under-par 62.

The only major among the 35-year-old Australian’s 13 wins was the 2015 PGA. Day’s first career PGA Tour victory came at the 2010 Nelson.

LIV — Dustin Johnson overcame a triple bogey by making birdie on the 18th hole to join a playoff and another birdie on the 18th to win LIV Golf Tulsa for his first win this year.

The victory was Johnson’s second since he joined LIV Golf a year ago. He also won outside Boston in a three-man playoff.

This one required some clutch shots on the closing hole at rain-soaked Cedar Ridge for Johnson to take down British Open champion Cameron Smith and Branden Grace.

Johnson, who closed with a 3-under 67, was trailing Smith (61) and Grace (65) by one shot when he hit his drive into the left rough on the 18th, partially blocked by a tree. He hit sand wedge over the corner of the tree to about 12 feet and made the birdie.

Smith was on the range waiting, having already birdied the 18th for his 61, tying the LIV record that Grace set in the opening round. Grace two-putted from 35 feet on the final hole, which put him in a playoff and assured his South African team “Stinger” its first team win of the year.

In the playoff, all three players were roughly on the same line, with Grace putting from the fringe. Grace missed to the left, Johnson holed his putt from 15 feet and Smith missed from 12 feet to the right of the hole.

LPGA — Jin Young Ko overcam a four-shot deficit to win the Founders Cup for the third time in five years, getting the victory on the first playoff hole when defending champion Minjee Lee three-putted for bogey.

In winning for the 15th time on the LPGA Tour and the second time this year, Ko shot a final round-best 5-under 67 in tough, windy conditions. The 27-year-old South Korean forced the playoff making a clutch downhill birdie from roughly 15 feet on No. 18 to tie for the lead.

Ko joins Lilia Vu as the only players with multiple wins on tour this year, earning $450,000 from the $3 million purse.

Ko shot a final round-best 5-under 67 to come away with the trophy.

The players went back to the par 4 No. 18 at the Upper Montclair Country Club for the playoff. Both players hit the green with their second shots with Lee being about 15 feet away and closer than Ko, who had a winding putt from right to left.

Ko snuggled her birdie attempt to tap-in range and Lee went for the win, but putted it six feet past the hole, missing the par saver to the right. Ko tapped in and then ran over and hugged her caddie, David Brooker.

Champions — Steve Stricker tied the Regions Tradition record with a 23-under 265 and ran away with his second straight championship at the PGA Tour Champions major. He finished with a 7-under 65 and won by six strokes over Ernie Els and Robert Karlsson. Stricker continued his domination on the Founders Course at Greystone. It’s his third win at the Tradition in his last five attempts, including two second-place finishes, and gave the 56-year-old five major wins, sixth-most on the 50-and-over tour.

European — Swedish golfer Simon Forsström held off countryman Jens Dantorp for a wire-to-wire victory at the Soudal Open in Antwerp, Belgium. The 34-year-old Forsström was one stroke ahead of Belgium’s Thomas Detry overnight, but Dantorp’s late charge from third proved the main threat. Forsström did just enough with some late birdies for a 2-under 69 to finish 17-under overall as Dantorp posted 67 to end on 16 under.

Career Highlight

Day claimed his first major championship at the 2015 PGA, when he became the first golfer to win a major with a 20-under-par total. The win at Whistling Straits came during a span in which he won seven titles in 17 starts while earning a debut stint as world No.1.

5 Things to Know

Early life struggles.

Day formally took up golf at the age of 6 after father, Alvin, brought home a cut-down 3-wood from the junkyard. He learned to play golf at the Beaudesert Golf Club in Queensland. Day has revealed his father, who died of stomach cancer when Day was aged 12, was an abusive alcoholic and influenced Day to play golf out of fear of punishment. When Alvin died, the family experienced further poverty. Day recalls that, because the family home didn’t have a hot water tank, his mother, Dening, would boil water on the stove to use for showers.

How Jason Day picked up golf

As a teenager, several chance meetings would shape Day's career. In his early teens, an off-the-rails Day went through troubles with alcohol and fist fights. But he met Colin Swatton, who would become his coach, then caddie, and remains his coach. Later in his teens, Day would attend Hills International College, where he would room and befriend Luke Reardon, who gave Day a copy of Tiger Woods' instructional book, How I Play Golf. Reardon was Day's roommate and motivated Day to wake up daily at 5am to practice. At Hills, Day would also meet close friend Rika Batibasaga. Reardon and Batibasaga now share caddie duties for Day.

Jason Day's wife Ellie

Day met eventual wife Ellie in 2005 when she was working as a server at Mavis Winkle's Irish Pub in Twinsburg, Ohio. Day was 17 and Ellie was 19. Day visited the restaurant with coach Swatton, as Swatton was helping a friend establish a golf academy in Twinsburg. When Day was back in town in 2006 for a Nationwide Tour event, Ellie came along to watch on the weekend. Inspired, Day won the tournament. The following weekend, Ellie drove to Columbus for a tournament and the couple had their first date – dinner at Applebee's and a horror movie, with Swatton as chaperone.

Day's family health problems

2017 was a tumultuous year for Day which delivered no victories. It began positively, with Day starting his tenure as a Nike ambassador, having signed a deal worth a reported $10 million a year. In March, an emotional Day withdrew from the WGC-Match mid-round and conducted a tearful press conference where he revealed mother Dening had been diagnosed with a tumor in her lung, which was initially thought to be terminal. Dening had successful surgery months later and did not require chemotherapy. In September, Day split with long-time caddie Swatton in favor of having close friends Batibasaga and Reardon share the bag. In December, Day's wife Ellie revealed she suffered a tragic miscarriage.

Ohio sports fan

Day has become an avid Ohio sports fan. Although he enjoys watching the Cleveland Cavaliers, his biggest passion is for Ohio State football. Day became a Buckeyes fan when he first attended a game in 2013, then was engrossed as fellow Australian Cameron Johnston, then a punter with the Buckeyes and now for the Philadelphia Eagles, helped OSU to the NCAA title in 2014. In 2015, while watching a Cavaliers home game, Ellie was injured when LeBron James collided with her while retrieving a loose ball. She left the arena in a stretcher with her head immobilized and was admitted to a nearby hospital.

Things He Does For Fun

Video games.

Day has a deep affection for playing video games, although he has never truly divulged what console he favors. Day's favorite game is Call of Duty, admitting he reached an elite level playing online against other users. He also enjoys playing FIFA football and F1.

Charity work

Day founded a charity with Ellie called the Brighter Days Foundation, which provides funding and resources to central Ohio organizations that work to end child hunger. The organization runs an annual fundraising golf day called the Brighter Days Invitational.

Best friends

Day loves to spend time with best friends Luke Reardon and Rika Batibasaga, who both live close to Day in the Columbus, Ohio area.

News for the 7 Eligible Official World Golf Ranking Tournaments

PGA Tour - AT&T Byron Nelson

Australian Jason Day secures first TOUR title since 2018 at AT&T Byron Nelson. Jason Day had just 3 feet left. That was all between him and his first win on the PGA TOUR since 2018. Standing on the 18th green, so many thoughts raced through his head. The first: “What if I miss?”

It’s hard to blame Day for that. It seemed every time things started to go well over the last five years, something came to knock him down a peg. Be it debilitating back pain, occasional bouts of vertigo or the health of his mother, if Day thought he had made a big stride toward reclaiming the game that put him at the top of the golf world, inevitably another roadblock popped up.

So, as he sat in the media centre Sunday night just a hundred yards or so from where he sank that short putt on the 18th to claim a one-shot victory at the AT&T Byron Nelson, he still hadn’t quite processed that his long journey back had finally culminated in a win. That there was no “but” attached, no boogie man waiting around the corner to pull the rug out from under him again.

“It feels strange to be sitting here. I don't know how else to explain it. To go through what I went through and then to be able to be a winner again.”

Jason Days' win now moves him back into the Top 20 in the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time since July 2019.

DP World Tour - Soudal Open

Simon Forsström claims fairy-tale win in Belgium after recovering from a back-nine wobble with a series of late birdies as he held off the charge of fellow Swede Jens Dantorp to claim his first DP World Tour title at the 2023 Soudal Open.

Forsström began the day with a slender one-shot lead before extending his advantage to three shots at the turn with birdies on the fourth and eighth. But things began to unravel on the back nine as the 34-year-old followed up a double bogey at the tenth with a bogey on the 12th to surrender the lead.

He bounced back brilliantly, though, holing birdie putts at the 14th, 16th, and 17th to take a one-shot lead down the last. And despite missing the fairway, he comfortably parred the 18th to sign for a closing 69, finish the tournament on 17 under par and clinch a one-shot victory.

The Swede secured his DP World Tour card with a two-stroke victory at the Final Stage of Qualifying School in November and has been impressive ever since, recording three top-ten finishes over the first five months of the campaign before ending his long wait for victory at Rinkven International Golf Club.

After his stunning win, Forsström said:

"I'm very happy and I don't have any words. I'm just glad I made it since I was in the lead. I think the course suits me very well, it's pretty tight and short. I won the Challenge Tour in Belgium, so I think Belgium is good! It's pretty similar to Sweden, the trees and the grass, so I think I feel very at home here. I hope I can keep proving myself and that this wasn’t one time."

Ireland’s Ronan Mullarney wins a weather-shortened 2023 Gösser Open with a two-round total of 12 under par. Gianmaria Rean Trinchero from Italy concluded the tournament in 2nd place with a two-day score of 8 under par. In 3rd place, a past winner of the Gösser Open Austria’s Timon Baltl with a total score of 7 under par. Tied for 4thplace just 1 stroke back France’s Oihan Guillamoundeguy and Italy’s Enrico Di Nitto.

The 144 players in the 2023 Gösser Open field had to compete for three days with constant rainfall and cold weather conditions. As the rain never stopped falling over Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz, Austria the course was definitely softer. Still, the weather conditions didn’t make it easy for the players.

Due to the delays and the unfavourable weather forecast, yesterday, the Tournament Committee of the 31st edition of the Gösser Open decided to reduce the tournament to 36 holes with no cut.

Ireland’s Ronan Mullarney who is 27 years old, captured his 1st full-field professional win at the 2023 Gösser Open! He shot an 8 under-par 64 in this first round and a 4 under-par 68 in round 2 for a two-day total of 12 under par. He previously had played in some events in 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic began but this is his 1st full year on the Alps Tour. Ronan turned professional in 2019 and competed in the 2022 Open Championship. After his victory, he was very pleased, “It was a difficult 36 holes, in these conditions. Trying to keep the umbrella up and down and keeping my bag as dry as possible, a lot of things happening on top of the golf that has to be played. Being from Ireland and having grown up in these conditions probably helped me. I can assure you that no one likes playing in these conditions, but I might have slightly more experience than the other guys.”  Ronan went on to add: “I’m delighted to have won this event, but it won’t mean a lot to me unless I’m able to end the season in the top 5 at the end of the year.”

Here's what you need to know about PGA Tour golfer and Westerville resident Jason Day

jason day pga tour status

Jason Day returned to the winner's circle of a PGA Tour event Sunday.

Day earned his 13th PGA Tour victory Sunday at the AT&T Byron Nelson , winning by one shot at 23 under par for his first PGA Tour win since the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship.

Here's four things you need to know about Day.

Jason Day is currently the No. 20-ranked golfer in the world

According to the Official World Golf Ranking, Day is still a top-20 golfer in the world.

In the latest rankings released Sunday, Day jumped 15 spots to No. 20 after finishing 2022 as the No. 112 golfer in the world. Day was the No. 1 golfer in the world in 2015, holding the top position for 51 weeks.

Day won the PGA Championship in 2015 after finishing tied for second in the Masters Tournament in 2011 and in second at the U.S. Open in 2011 and 2013.

Through 16 events and 54 rounds in 2023, Day has finished in the top-10 seven times and in the top-25 12 times. Per PGA Tour, Day has made $5,652,533 so far this year: his most since 2016.

Jason Day was born in Australia

Day was born in Beaudesert, Queensland in Australia in 1987.

According to the latest Official World Golf Ranking, Day is one of six Australian golfers in the top 100 along with Cameron Smith (No. 8), Adam Scott (No. 38), Lucas Herbert (No. 46), Min Woo Lee (No. 62) and Cameron Davis (No. 68).

Jason Day struggles with vertigo

Finishing tied for 39th at the 2023 Masters with Scott, Abraham Ancer and Taylor Moore, Day revealed that he experienced another bout of vertigo during the final round of the tournament.

“We had to finish our third round Sunday morning and then I was sitting in the caddie hut and that’s when I got vertigo," Day said a ccording to GolfWeek . "It really kicked my butt at Augusta. That was like kind of the time where I had to take a step back.”

Day collapsed due to vertigo during the second round of the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.

Vertigo is a symptom where someone has the sensation that they or the environment around them is spinning or moving.

Jason Day currently lives in Westerville

Day currently lives in Westerville with his wife Ellie, an Ohio native, and his four children Dash James, Lucy, Arrow Joseph and Oz Nilo.

Ellie Day launched the Brighter Days Foundation in 2015 which partners with local nonprofit organizations in Ohio to "meet basic needs, give hope, and deliver high-quality programs and services with measurable, impactful results, ensuring that every dollar raised goes back into the local community."

Jason Day staying true to his goals heading into 2024 Masters: 'Climb back to No 1 in the world'

Day is hoping his return to the winner's circle involves a green jacket this week.

Jason Day waited five long years to capture a win on the PGA Tour following his Wells Fargo Championship victory in 2018.

It was the AT&T Byron Nelson on May 14, 2023, when everything clicked, including a final round 62 that gave him his 13th career win on Tour.

Day, in his 17th year on Tour, understands like any of his peers how hard it is to hoist a trophy at the end of a grueling four-day tournament. However, when it comes to majors, like this week’s Masters , the pressure to come out victorious is tenfold.

It is a pressure, though, that Day has battled and triumphed through. During his fantastic 2015 season, when he held the world No. 1 golf ranking, Day won the 2015 PGA Championship . It is the only major win he has under his belt, but he came very close in The Open Championship last year, finishing tied-second.

So, heading into his 13th career Masters tournament this week at Augusta National Golf Club, Day only has one thing on his mind.

"I do want to get back into the winner’s circle," Day, who will be wearing Malbon Golf attire for the first time at Augusta, told Fox News Digital. "My goal is to climb back to No. 1 in the world – I’ve said that for a while now. The only way to do that is to win tournaments. You can be consistent, but it’s really difficult to be consistent and get to No. 1 in the world without winning."

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, APRIL 7, 1963, JACK NICKLAUS WINS FIRST OF RECORD SIX MASTERS TOURNAMENTS

Day’s 2024 season has seen three top 10 finishes, but the best he could do was tied-sixth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. His last three tournaments have not been his best performances either, finishing tied-36th (Arnold Palmer Invitational), tied-35th (The Players), and most recently getting cut at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. This came after a ninth-place finish at The Genesis Invitational.

So, what is Day working on to get ready for one of golf’s toughest tasks?

"I think kinda steady the ship a little bit for me personally," he said. "Just trying to get back to not over-complicating things. I think typically, as professionals, we look to go, ‘OK, how do we improve? How do we get our next win? How do we stay on top?’ And there’s certain guys who make it look very, very simple, like a Scottie Scheffler right now, who makes it look very simple. Same with like a Rory McIlroy, certain guys like that. They tend to make golf look very, very simple. You see it, and it’s like, ‘Ah, I can do that, too,’ but then you get out there, and it’s a lot harder than you’d expect.

"Going into it, just kind of preparing for it the same way. Mentally, kind of just changing a few things to try to not throw the tournament on a massive pedestal, but also just preparing the same way personally."

The first golf major of the year, the Masters is as daunting as it is beautiful. The course is a golfer’s paradise with its iconic azaleas and magnolia trees – until the angulated greens and uneven lies on the fairway make anyone question everything about their game.

Day admits he has been trying to tweak things with his game in the last few tournaments, and nothing has worked. Of course, that is not what he would want to hear before the Masters, but he is a veteran when it comes to this tournament where he has made nine of 12 cuts, including six top 20 finishes, four of which were top 10.

"The last few tournaments I tried a few things to try to get my swing to move in a certain direction where I want to go, and it just hasn’t paid off," Day said. "So, I’m not going to upset it. I’m just going to go back to my old feels. My short game and my putting are really good right now, so that’s obviously crucial. There’s extreme angulation, especially on the green surfaces – around the greens as well. Sometimes, the playing services can, even though it does look green and lush, sometimes the way they mow the grass can be a little hard to chip around and have good touch around the greens.

"Essentially what I’m trying to do is to get back to making things a little more simple and then, through it being more simple and you not over-complicating things, you play stress-free golf. If you play stress-free golf, that typically yields better results. Just building that confidence over time."

JUSTIN THOMAS ANNOUNCES SPLIT WITH CADDIE JIM ‘BONES’ MACKAY DAYS BEFORE MASTERS

As Day mentioned, the Masters field will be filled with players like Scheffler, who is red-hot right now after winning back-to-back tournaments with the Arnold Palmer Invitation and The Players before finishing tied-second at the Houston Open. Additionally, LIV Golf stars like Brooks Koepka, and the reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm, are always on the bingo card to compete.

Again, Day is not new to this. As a former world No. 1, he knows how tough it can be when every golfer is gunning for the title. The only way to stave them off is winning.

Jason Day reads putt

Getting his first career green jacket would certainly vault him up the rankings, where he currently sits No. 22 in the world. The beauty of the Masters is that, for all its bravado and tradition, is just like any other tournament when the first tee shots go off on Thursday.

"Golf is a finnicky game: you can be playing terrible, but then one week it clicks, and then you’re back in the winner’s circle saying, ‘How the hell did I do that?’ Doing the best job I can do right now, and taking it day by day," Day said.

It also helps that Day feels like he has his identity back again while wearing Malbon Golf attire this season – a switch he made ahead of the new year after spending the past seven years with Nike.

Day's attire has been talked about in the golfing world since he was seen in baggier pants compared to other golfers at The Sentry back in January. He is excited to showcase the styles that Stephen and Erica Malbon, founders of the lifestyle golf brand, chose for him this year.

"I think being able to wear the Malbon brand at Augusta, there are a lot of traditions there. They typically say it: we don’t have rules here, we have traditions at Augusta. That is one of the places where you feel it the most, especially being an old-school club. ..I think it’s more about being able to showcase like, ‘Hey, we’re wearing the brand, but it’s golf.’ We’re trying to do it in the most respectful way, but also being able to showcase what is behind Stephen’s ideas of being able to blend the fashion world in regards to the golfing world."

Masters 2024: Jason Day says Augusta National asked him to take off his 'busy' sweater vest

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/jason_day_malbon_friday.jpg

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Jason Day's attire has been a hot topic of conversation this week at the Masters with seemingly every golf fan morphing into a fashion critic. But apparently Augusta National weighed in on Friday's loud sweater vest as well. And it turns out the club was not a fan.

RELATED: Buy your own not-Augusta-approved Jason Day vest if you dare

Following Day's third round, the Aussie was asked about drawing more attention for his outfits than his play. It was then when he revealed that he was asked to remove the Malbon Golf vest during the second round. Introducing VESTGATE!

Q. Have you heard any—is it OK with the green jackets, the designs and the things that you've been wearing? They can be a little bit restrictive.

JASON DAY: Are you talking about like Augusta in general? Yeah, they asked me to take it off—the vest off yesterday.

Q. The busy one?

JASON DAY: Yeah, the busy one. Respectfully, you do that because it's all about the tournament here, and I understand that. I respect the tournament. That's what we're here to do is try and play and win the green jacket.

Q. Did they explain to you why they'd like you to take it off? The logo is too big?

JASON DAY: I don't know. I didn't ask. They said, can you take it off? I said, yeah, no worries.

We've long known Augusta National has plenty of rules , including those regarding clothing. Our Chris Powers found out you have to wear pants to play the course last year. But a rule against 'busy' sweaters? That's a first. Here's more from Day:

Q. What were you trying to do?

JASON DAY: I wasn't trying to do anything. They just scripted me in it, and I was wearing it.

Q. That's what happens, you're given your outfits by your sponsors?

JASON DAY: Yeah, they send you the scripting and say, this is what we want you to wear Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and I'm like, okay.

Q. If they asked you to remove it, it came from who?

JASON DAY: It came from Augusta National.

Q. Like a green jacket?

JASON DAY: I don't know if it was a green jacket. I don't know who it was. They asked, and I respectfully took it off.

As if this tournament couldn't get any crazier. Here's video of Day's comments:

Again, wild stuff. And even more press for Malbon Golf. Hopefully, Jason's got another outer-layer option in his bag if he gets chilly on Sunday.

Jason Day wins PGA Championship with record performance

August 16, 2015 / 7:13 PM EDT / CBS News

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- Jason Day stayed ahead of rival Jordan Spieth to take the PGA Championship, winning his first major title.

The 27-year-old Australian golfer became the first player in history to finish 20 under, breaking the record set by Tiger Woods in 2000 at the British Open. Meanwhile Spieth moves to the number one rank in the world, moving past Rory McIlroy.

See more on the PGA Championship at CBSSports.com .

Day shot 5-under 67, and never let Spieth get closer than two shots.

Branden Grace finished third and Justin Rose was fourth.

A nice ending to the major season for a player who has endured some close calls and his share of heartache.

At the U.S. Open in June, he fell while walking during the second round. He had vertigo symptoms. But he played through the weekend and actually held a share of the lead after 54 holes before fading on Sunday.

At the British Open, he also was in the lead after 54 holes but ended up one shot out of a playoff.

He closed the deal this time.

This was Day's 10th top-10 finish at a major. His first came here, in Wisconsin, at the 2010 PGA.

Earlier this week, Day said he knew if he kept putting himself in position, he'd eventually break through.

He was tearing up as he waited to hit the tap-in putt that would seal the victory. He did it, then raised both fists and buried his face in his caddie's shoulder. His son, Dash, ran to the 18th green to celebrate and Day carried him off the green. He later held the Wanamaker Trophy.

Day is the fifth Aussie to win the PGA, and the first since Steve Elkington at Riviera in 1995.

Masters 2024 leaderboard: Live Round 2 updates, Tiger Woods score, Scottie Scheffler

W e're getting late in the day at the second round of the 2024 Masters at Augusta National and due to inclement weather on Thursday morning , the start of the first round got pushed back by 2 ½ hours. Bryson DeChambeau opened the day in the lead at 7 under, but has serious challengers in Max Homa, Nicolai Højgaard, Scottie Scheffler and more.

And where will the cutline end up?

The weather is beautiful at Augusta today, with the sun shining and the green hues popping.

Here is our Friday photo gallery .

Recap: All the action from Day 1 of the Masters

Wyndham Clark had chance on 18, but misses cut

It came down to the last hole for Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open winner who said after Thursday's opening round that he was happy with his place behind then-leader Bryson DeChambeau because, “We’ve got 54 holes. In LIV Golf they only play 54, so I like my chances.”

Clark made bogeys on Nos. 14, 15 and 17 to fall outside the cut line by a single stroke at 7 over. He missed a birdie putt on 18 that would have snuck him under the mark.

Clark, who was a middle-of-the-pack player for his first five years on the PGA Tour, has improved so much in the past year that his name was being thrown around as a possible winner in his Masters debut. Only three players have done that, the last being Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979.

New gnome caddie ornament available this year

The Masters Christmas ornament caddie garden gnome.

Six years after the popular debut of the bearded wonder — and three years after the mini gnome was introduced — the Masters Tournament golf shop has added a third sibling to the popular gnome: The Gnome Caddie Ornament.

“I can’t wait to add it to my collection,” said Tabb Hinson, who attended Thursday’s round as a Junior Patron.

Packaged in the same box as its larger brothers, the 2024 Caddie Ornament is outfitted in the same white jumpsuit as the mini gnome.

It costs $25 and was not sold during practice round days. They are limited to one per patron.

Jon Rahm three-putts from 7 feet, was in danger of missing cut in title defense

Thanks to an ugly double on No. 14 defending champ Jon Rahm is in real danger of missing the cut.

Rahm flew the green on the par 4, then chipped to seven feet with an opportunity to save par. He hammered his putt well past the cup, however, and came up well short on a 15-footer coming back up the hill.

The Arizona State product was 6 over with five holes to play but responded like a true champ with birdies on 15 and 16. He finished the day at 5 over, which should be good enough to barely make the cut.

Scheffler finds water on No. 13, drops out of solo lead

Scottie Scheffler found the creek with his second shot on the par 5 13th hole, and even though he made a nice recovery from an awkward lie on his fourth shot, the Texan still made bogey on the hole and fell back into a three-way tie with Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau at 6 over.

It's getting tight as a total of 16 players are within five shots of the lead.

Jose Maria Olazabal makes crucial mistake, but makes cut

It's been 30 years since Jose Maria Olazabal captured the Green Jacket, edging Tom Lehman by two strokes. Despite a wayward shot on the par 3 12th hole, the Spaniard looks to have reached the weekend at the 2024 Masters.

Olazabal's tee shot came up just short and rolled back into the pond in front of the 12th green and he took a triple bogey that pushed his score to 6 over for the tournament.

"Yeah, I paid dearly, I have to say. Yes, just a pity. I played really good golf today. It was just a shame that I put a bad swing on 12. As simple as that. It cost me dearly. I made a triple there," the 58-year-old said. "I can say I'm proud of the way I played today and the way I handled myself on the golf course."

When the cut dipped to 3 over it looked like Olazabal would be on the outside looking in, but when winds picked up and the number rose, Olazabal, who is making his 35th appearance in the event, appeared to get new life.

Cut has moved to 5 over as winds howl

As the sun is starting to dip, the cut at the 2024 Masters has moved to 5 over as windy conditions and firm greens have made for difficult scoring conditions.

https://twitter.com/GolfonCBS/status/1778895014405271748

Players who are currently on the wrong side of the line include Adam Scott (6 over, finished), Viktor Hovland 6 over through 10), and Tom Kim (6 over, finished).

Among those battling to stay on the right side is Jon Rahm, who is currently at 4 over after making bogeys on Nos. 3, 6 and 11.

No matter who wins at Augusta, Jay Monahan loses

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan looks on during Day Four of the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Our Eamon Lynch opined about the state of golf, the impact of the Masters and the fact that PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan comes out of this week a loser under any circumstance.

From the column:

If the Masters is a ratings hit, then it will be presented as evidence that the majors are healthy while regular PGA Tour golf is wilting, that the game only thrives when the best players are together. Cue increased pressure to finalize a deal with the Saudis to end the division and restore normalcy. The particulars of an agreement have been agonizingly slow to materialize and are a long way from concluding and delivering on it isn’t solely within Monahan’s gift. But it will be his burden to shoulder. Alternatively, if the Masters is a dud compared to the norm, then it fuels fears that golf is inexorably declining, that the discord has driven fans away and not even the best players on the greatest stage can draw them back. Guess in whose direction fingers will be wagged in that scenario? This week is a no-win for Monahan.

Patrick Reed on Augusta: 'Just absolutely will destroy you'

Patrick Reed tees off on No. 16 during the completion of the first round of the 2024 Masters Tournament. (Photo: Adam Cairns-USA TODAY Network)

When play was stalled on Thursday, Patrick Reed was in great position, but a stretch of 4 over par on the final three holes of his first round changed all that. He's still in contention, for sure, but a second-round 74 means he'll have to get hot on the weekend to win a second Green Jacket.

The conditions on Friday made it difficult for players and Reed thinks his commitment was the key to survival.

"It's one of those things you just have to believe in what you're doing. Even if you're wrong on the wind or club or whatever, you have to have full confidence in it, and I feel like that's something that (caddie) Kess (Karain) and I have made sure we did all day today is that no matter what we were doing, whether it was what we were hitting off the tee, what shot we were hitting, just full commit, and if you're going to go down, go down swinging. I think that's the biggest thing.

"It's very easy to get guidey when it gets windy like this, especially around a golf course like this," said Reed, who won the 2018 Masters. "And when that happens, Augusta National just absolutely will destroy you."

Will Fred Couples be back in 2025? And then some, he said

Fred Couples putts during a practice round for the Masters Tournament golf tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. Mandatory Credit: Katie Goodale-USA TODAY Network

Fred Couples followed his opening-round 80 with a 76 on Friday, but don't think you've seen the last of the veteran at Augusta National. His back is in bad shape, but the 64-year-old quickly shut down any talk about this being his last trip to the Masters.

"I'm planning on being healthy and making the cut and telling Fred (Ridley) I'm coming back the next year, too," Couples said. "This was really ugly. Yesterday there were several times I should have not played, but I thought I could help these guys that I was playing with a little bit even though they're out-driving me by 50 yards with the wind, so I didn't want to quit."

Couples certainly had a few highlight moments, including a 57-foot birdie putt that dropped on the 13th hole. He added a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 17.

There were some uneven moments, however as he posted six bogeys.

"It was really, I don't want to say no fun because it's Augusta, but swinging was a chore," Couples said.

Here's more from David Westin of the Augusta Chronicle.

A Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson pairing on Saturday? It's possible

Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson look to be safely inside the cutline with just a few holes to play on Friday, but the two have occupied the same of the leaderboard for most of the last 24 hours.

As of 3:15 p.m, both Woods and Mickelson are at 1 over. Would Masters organizers pair them together on Saturday, for the third round of action? Seems like a great idea.

The pair have only been paired together twice in the Masters, both times in the final round of play, once in 2001 and again in 2009.

Stay tuned. ( And follow our Adam Woodard on the Tiger Tracker to see where he's sitting. )

Where is the cutline? Right now it's projected at 3 over

The cutline keeps shifting at Augusta National, but as of 2:14 ET, the number is 3 over.

To make the cut after the first 36 holes of the Masters, a player must be in the top 50 places on the leaderboard, including ties. Previously, anyone within 10 strokes of the lead also made the cut, but that rule was scrapped for the 2020 Masters, which was pushed back to November due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among those on the wrong side as of right now? Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott and Gary Woodland, to name a few.

Best Amateur: Neal Shipley still in lead, but now tied

Four amateurs made their Augusta National Golf Club debut Thursday, and the fifth in the field was making his third start at the Masters. Amateurs are a huge part of the Masters tradition, and the five in the field each had different paths they took during the first round.

Each of the amateurs concluded their first round of play, however, no one is making a run like Sam Bennett did last year. The competition for the Silver Cup remains wide open.

Neal Shipley appeared to be running away with things when he got to 3 under after the third hole of his second round, but he gave strokes away consistently the rest of the day and finished at 3 under.

As for 1:30 ET, Christo Lamprecht is also 3 over.

Another quadruple bogey, this time from Bubba Watson

The two-time Masters champion was teetering around the cutline on Friday before a quadruple bogey on the 11th hole. He hit his second shot in the water before hitting his fourth shot thin and past the hole.

After chipping back onto the green, he 3-putted from there for an 8. He dropped from 4-over, one shot back of the cutline, to 8-over and in a tie for 80th.

Here's more on the epic meltdown.

Greg Norman spotted at Augusta; needed secondary market tickets

Greg Norman was at Augusta National Golf Club on Wednesday and had this to say to the Washington Post: “I’m here because we have 13 players that won 10 Masters between them. So I’m here just to support them, do the best I can to show them, ‘Hey, you know, the boss is here rooting for you.’”

So how did he get in? Per his son, he had to buy a ticket on the secondary market:

What's in the merch tent?

Masters 2024 merchandise.

The line to get into the Masters Golf Shop can be intimidating.

Our Adam Schupak braved it on Tuesday afternoon and a patron who was in shouting distance behind me summed up the sentiment of many Masters patrons: “I don’t know if I’ll ever be back so I better go now.”

I hope that guy loaded up on quarter zips, ball caps and divot tools with the iconic Masters logo to last a lifetime. It took about 25 minutes to weave through the stanchions and enter the giant mall of merchandise.

Here are more photos from what we collected.

Max Homa having his best Masters so far

Homa is playing his fifth Masters and he's having by far his most success at Augusta National.

Here's how his first four trips around the course went:

This week? How about tied for the lead in the second round.

Homa is 7 under overall, with birdies on No. 2 and No. 4, the second one coming off a long putt on the 240-yard par 3.

Nicolai Hojgaard would love some more rest

After an outstanding 67 in his opening round of play, Nicolai Højgaard stumbled a bit on the front of his second round, posting bogeys on both Nos. 5 and 6 to slip to 3 under for the tournament.

https://twitter.com/CallawayGolf/status/1778785017248022787

And while he was in a groove through the first round, the native of Denmark could have used a little more shuteye between rounds. He's making his first appearance in the tournament.

"I'd prefer to have a little more sleep. That's part of it. You've got to adapt," he said on Friday. "That's part of it. I can't complain. I like it. I like the grind. So that's part of it."

Jordan Spieth's collapse isn't the first one

Jordan Spieth and his caddie Michael Greller after Spieth failed to win a second straight Masters title, in 2016. (Getty Images)

With a quadruple bogey on the 15th hole, Jordan Spieth essentially ended his chances of making the cut at the 2024 Masters . He followed with a bogey on 17 and another on the opening hole of the second round.

Of course, this isn't the greatest Masters meltdown for the Texan. He blew a five-shot lead on the back nine Sunday of the 2016 Masters.

At the time, Spieth talked about how he got words of advice from other athletes on how to bounce back from his Masters collapse (although he wouldn’t disclose who those athletes were).

“I received notes immediately following that night pretty much saying, ‘This happens everywhere. No doubt, you’ll be back. Don’t draw on it. It happens to everyone in all sports on different levels,’ ” Spieth said.

He also said he’s received kind words from people around Dallas.

“I’ve got ladies at the grocery stores putting their hand on me and going, ‘Really praying for you. How are you doing?’ ” Spieth said. “I’m like, ‘My dog didn’t die. I’ll be OK. I’ll survive. It happens.’ ”

First round officially completed

All the players have officially completed the first round of play at the Masters. Nicolai Højgaard is the lowest player in the course as of 10:15 a.m., as he's currently at 5 under, but Max Homa is about to tee off.

https://twitter.com/TheMasters/status/1778796464728371538

Here are the tee times, again.

Pin placements for Friday

Here's a peek at the pins for the second round of action. You'll see some good shots on the par-3 6th and at the closing 18th, where the pins are located at the base of slopes that will pull the ball back toward the hole.

A more western wind would affect the east-west holes. Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 15 would be into the wind, as could the second shots into 13; Nos. 7, 9, 14 and 17 would have the wind at the players' back.

With the wind out of the north, Nos. 2, 5, 10 and 11 will generally be downwind, with Nos. 8, 13 and 18 into the wind.

Based on early returns, the wind will limit players' chances to go for the green in two on No. 15. We've already had three double bogeys this morning: Tyrrell Hatton, Adam Scott and Sam Burns.

Peter Malnati struggled to 82, keeps diary for Golfweek

Peter Malnati qualified for his first Masters by winning the Valspar Championship last month. The 36-year-old veteran hadn’t won in nearly nine years on the PGA Tour. He’s sharing a first-person account of his experience daily only at Golfweek.com.

In his opening round, Malnati struggled to an 82. Here's some of what he said in today's entry.

So, definitely not the Masters debut round that I was looking for, but like I said in the beginning, lots of gratitude for this first experience. I think this will serve me well. I don’t think this will be my last Masters. And this one’s not over yet either. I’m going to go out on Friday and try as I do every round to have a really good plan on the first shot and I’ll try to go execute them all as well as I can and just repeat that throughout the round. Easier said than done because the forecast is for blustery conditions and I know it’s going be tough in the wind. I am going to give it my all and go out and have a great day and build some positive momentum. Hopefully it’ll be enough to earn me a weekend tee time here but either way I’m going to have a positive day and build some positive momentum, some good mojo, coming from my first Masters appearance.

Augusta weather update for Friday; Woodland predicts 'perfect' weekend

The conditions at Augusta National should be much improved for both the players and patrons as the Masters moves into second-round play Friday.

After a rainy start, the showers and thunderstorms that blanketed Augusta National Golf Club on Thursday are expected to give way to sunshine as the course gets a chance to dry out a little. Of course, the abrupt weather changes are nothing new for this time of year in Georgia.

Golfers who began play in the morning in Thursday's opening round will tee off later in the day on Friday, while the players with later tee times to start the tournament will get an earlier start in Round 2.

Here's the latest forecast for Friday's second round at the Masters.

The AccuWeather forecast for Augusta, Georgia, calls for mostly sunny skies and less humid conditions Friday, with virtually no chance of precipitation and a high around 73 degrees.

How does that translate to the weekend? Gary Woodland says it'll be optimal.

"I think it'll be right where we all want it. We all want it firm and fast. This golf course, like I said, going into (Thursday), it was as good as I'd ever seen it, and I think by this weekend it'll be perfect," Woodland said.

Max Homa in the hunt

When you play with Tiger Woods, you get bigger crowds, but less attention, if that makes any sense. Max Homa has thrived on the energy around the Woods group, and he dropped the day's first birdie on the No, 16 to move to 5 under par. The California native sits just two shots behind leader Bryson DeChambeau.

What hole has traditionally been the toughest?

Rory McIlroy hits from the No. 11 fairway during a practice round for the 2024 Masters Tournament golf tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. Mandatory Credit: Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports

The par-4 11th has historically been the toughest hole in relation to par, playing to a 4.303 average.

Known as White Dogwood, it was only the third-most difficult hole in 2023, and the hole has seen some changes in recent years.

For example:

1950: Masters tees relocated. Pond left of green built. Green reshaped.

1953: Two small bunkers added at rear of green.

1990: Green rebuilt due to flood damage.

1999: Green, pond and bunker complex adjusted.

2002: Masters tees moved back 30-35 yards and moved five yards to golfer’s right. Portion of fairway landing area recontoured.

2004: Pine trees (36) added to the right of the fairway.

2006: Masters tees moved back 10-15 yards. Trees added to the right side of the fairway and fairway shifted to the left.

2008: Several trees removed on right side of fairway and fairway widened.

2022: Masters tees moved back 15 yards and to the golfer’s left. Fairway recontoured and several trees removed on right side.

Finau got a patent for his Ping putter

Tony Finau accepting a patent certificate for a compact putter from Ping's Tony Serrano. (Ping)

Tony Finau has been known to turn his putter, a Ping PLD Anser 2D, counter-clockwise in his hands and strike the ball with the toe-end of his putter, popping the ball onto the putting surface.

In fact, he loves the feeling shots like that create so much that he worked with designers and engineers at Ping to build a prototype putter that replicates the sensations of that shot and was just named as one of three people on a utility patent awarded to Ping (U.S. #11,911,670 B2) for a compact putter head. Tony Serrano, Ping’s principal putter design engineer, and John A. Solheim, the company’s president, are also on the patent.

Finau was presented with a patent certificate in Ping’s PGA Tour van on Wednesday outside the gates of Augusta National Golf Club.

Here's more on the story.

Who might miss the cut at the 2024 Masters?

With only 89 players competing, the Masters has the smallest field of the four major championships. Even fewer make the cut, which will most likely come Friday night, assuming they can catch up after Thursday’s weather delay.

The top 50 players and ties make the cut at Augusta National Golf Club. It used to be top 50 and ties and those within 10 shots of the lead, but that rule was changed in 2020.

Jordan Spieth sat 2 over thru 11 holes, but posted a birdie at No. 13 early Friday and has plenty of golf ahead of him. The 2015 Masters champ has a pair of par 5s upcoming in the morning, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see Spieth move up the board a bit.

Here are some other notables flirting with the cutline at this point.

Jason Day's clothes, not scores creating buzz

While Jason Day caught some heat for his clothing choices on the first day of the Masters, his play was steady consistent.

During the opening rounds of the 2024 Masters , Day has paired with Tiger Woods and Max Homa.

Day posted a couple bogeys on the front during his opening round but rebounded with two birdies to get to even before the sun went down.

Tee times, Bryson DeChambeau

Leader Bryson DeChambeau goes off at 11:54 a.m. on Friday with Gary Woodland and Thorbjorn Olesen.

2024 Masters prize money, purse: Payouts, winnings for Scottie Scheffler, each golfer from $20 million pool

More than history and a green jacket were on the line at augusta national on sunday.

jason day pga tour status

Plenty of green was up for grabs at the 2024 Masters on Sunday -- not only in the form of the famed jacket awarded to the winner of this year's tournament but also in regards to the prize money being paid out from a record-setting pool. Augusta National Golf Club announced that the 2024 Masters would have a total purse of $20 million, marking a new tournament high by $2 million and the largest payout awarded to players at one of the nation's most pristine venues.

Scottie Scheffler was the greatest beneficiary of that increased purse, capturing the $3.6 million winner's share by capturing his second Masters championship in three years . Finishing 11 under with a 4-under 68 capping a tremendous tournament, Scheffler became the fourth-youngest golfer to win two green jackets and the 10th to win two in a three-year span. The $3.6 million prize is $360,000 more than 2023 champion Jon Rahm earned a year ago.

Runner-up Ludvig Åberg achieved quite a payday in his first career major championship. Pressing Scheffler down the stretch, the young Swede scored $2.16 million for second place, a larger sum than either Danny Willett (2016) or Jordan Spieth (2015) earned for winning the green jacket.

Scheffler and Åberg were not the only players set to receive significant green by week's end. In fact, the top three were set to receive seven-figure paydays, except Collin Morikawa struggled down the stretch and entered into a three-way tie with Max Homa and Tommy Fleetwood. Morikawa lost $320,000 by bogeying the last, though he increased the take-home of Homa and Fleetwood with the trio each taking home $1.04 million. This marked the first time that the Masters had five players bring home $1 million or more.

Those among the top 11 were set to see at least $500,000 deposited into their bank accounts, and the handsome payouts trickled down the leaderboard with every golfer inside the top 36 leaving Augusta National with six figures.
