STARCRAFT POP TOP

Journey pop top, all-terrain pop top, all terrain, basestation, jrv campervan, optimum campervan, all terrain campervan, conquest motorhome, optimum motorhome, a guide to your jayco rv: how to use the 12v system.

The 12 Volt system on an RV allows you to operate many of your appliances and lights without being connected to a power outlet.

Most 12V systems are designed to use deep-cycle house batteries fitted in your RV and take slow, regular current draws until roughly 50% charge remains.

It’s important you know how to operate this before you embark on your journey.

Luckily, this is an easy process.

In this video, Chris will be demonstrating how to use the 12 Volt system fitted in a Journey Pop Top.

This is a standard inclusion in Journey Pop Top , Expanda Pop Top , Starcraft Pop Top , Starcraft Caravan , Basestation , Work’N’Play , CrossTrak , and all Jayco Camper Trailers .

Step-by-step guide to using the 12V system:

Regardless of whether you are plugged into 240V or not, you can power up your van using 12V.

Locate the isolation switch in your van.

Switch it on to operate your entire 12V system.

Below this, you will find the pump switch.

If you are free camping, switch this on.

This will provide you with access to water for your shower, outside tap or kitchen sink, if you have water available in the tank.

Make sure you don’t turn this on if you are in a caravan park. If you are connected to mains, it will burn out the water pump if turned on.

Review: Jayco Journey Outback

In 2014 Jayco combined the best of two models, the Destiny and the Sterling, into a new caravan, the Journey. It’s grown to become the most popular in the range of Jayco’s pop-tops, and continues to find new fans thanks to a line-up of sought-after features.

The Journey range is divided into two basic groups, those designed more for highway touring and those equipped for tougher operations on less accommodating tracks. Designated as the 17.55-8 and -9 or Outback models, these are the biggest sellers in the Journey range.

Jayco’s pop-top vans have always been popular with those looking for a lower roof line for enhanced aerodynamics, fuel consumption or storage reasons. They are also sought after by buyers who don’t want to fork out for a larger tow vehicle.

Today they’re increasingly an option for couples moving up from something like a camper trailer, or those moving up from tent camping and looking for more creature comforts. With good ground clearance in the Outback models, tougher set-up and a smaller travelling profile than most caravans, they can still be taken to many of the places you once sought with your camper trailer or tent.

The Outback kit including Jayco’s popular JTECH independent trailing arm suspension package with heavy duty drawbar (120mm deep instead of 100mm), a front jerry can holder, black checkerplate panelling over the lower portion of the body, external 12-volt power outlet, galvanised rear bumper bar, gas bayonet fitting to the exterior for use with an external barbecue and 120 watt roof-mounted solar panel. These vans have a much better resale value and give you that element of extra flexibility no matter what circumstances might throw at you.

The Outback fitout also introduces larger 235/75R15 tougher all-terrain tyres on alloy rims in place of the touring 185R14 rubber found on the highway models.

The downside to this is the weight increases by an extra 150kg and the ball weight increases by 25kg, although neither is excessive.

Since they have a shower fitted they come standard with a 100 amp-hour gel battery for the water pump, a second 82-litre water tank, and a second 9kg gas bottle to run the water heater unit.

All of the 17ft vans, including the 17.55-8 and -9, also come equipped with a Truma air conditioning system. These excellent German-made units do a much better job in extreme conditions and are worth having.

Like all Jayco vans, the tandem axle shower-equipped models have a 475kg of carrying capacity to accommodate the extra water.

The fitout provides for a range of features that are worth having. There are 12 internal layout styles to choose from across the range. One of the attributes brought over from the Sterling was the higher walls. This allows for tinted Dometic double glazed windows built-in blinds and insect mesh.

With the larger windows, zip-out panels in the pop-top walls and a roof-mounted skylight over the bed, the interiors of these vans are bright and sunny.

The fully separate all-in-one bathroom across the rear is the stand out feature. It comes with comfortable layout, plenty of storage spaces and the shower has been improved with a single-piece unit eliminating the risk of leaks.

There are a range of bathroom and kitchen options to choose from. The Outback model as tested came without a normal oven to allow for extra storage, but it is an option. There is a microwave, Smev three-burner gas hotplates and single electric hot plate gas stove with griller underneath.

The extra electric hotplate comes in handy, saving gas when mains power is available, as does the dual-mode water heater. The fridge, which was 110 litres capacity in the Sterling, has now gone up to a standard 150 litre three-way unit.

For sleeping, there’s either an island orthopaedic double bed or two singles, with inner spring mattresses. For peace of mind, all the Journey vans are equipped standard with a Camec security door.

While the Outback vans are designed basically for two, there is a $299 option to purchase an additional cushion and baseboard, which converts the dinette into another bed.

A stand out feature certainly not available in the 1970s is the electrical and entertainment systems. Lighting is all LED and completely wireless. This eliminates the risk of any wiring problems and also means you never have to get out of bed to switch off a light – there’s a remote for that. A USB charging point is standard as well as an 18-inch LED television/DVD player with mounting bracket and wind-up antenna. There’s a Fusion CD/radio system, complete with external speakers.

To complete the outside living experience there’s an optional external shower (with free-standing shower tent if desired) and an external TV socket. To extend your options all Jayco outlets offer an annexe kit.

All the Journey models come with a white Euro-style fibreglass body, with sloping aerodynamic nose. Smart graphics set off the finish and give a sharp style to these vans.

There are so many options to choose from across the range. One certainly worth considering for off roaders is the Coast to Coast Control Panel ($207) which monitors water levels in up to four tanks (two standard plus optional third and waste water tanks) as well as battery charge levels   There is also the excellent Al-Ko Electronic Stability Control to keep your van where it belongs, as well as a longer A-frame, Tregg offroad polyblock coupling, and leather seat coverings.

Pop-tops have come a long way since the first humble camper was introduced by Jayco in the 1970s and they remain as popular as ever. The reason for that is undoubtedly due to their value for money in terms of quality, resale value and great list of standard features.

At $41,563 RRP as tested, it is excellent value.

12 Volt Jayco Caravan Accessories for Off the Grid Free Camping

Going off the grid gives you a perfect chance to get away from the crowds. What could be better than relaxing and enjoying nature? Keeping life simple is the fastest way to happiness. But, sometimes adding a bit of creature comfort is a good idea. It can help enhance your camping experience and create perfect memories like 12V Jayco Caravan Accessories.

But, you need more than a caravan to have a self-sustainable off-grid caravan trip.

What better way to improve your off-the-grid free camping experience, than with some 12 Volt Jayco Caravan accessories.  By setting up your power to stay off the grid, you don’t need to rely on a power supply or a caravan park anytime you go camping.

There are a large amount of 12V Jayco Caravan accessories available, let’s take a look at the most popular ones.

Restoring solar power: Caravan roof repair focuses on a malfunctioning solar panel for sustainable travel

Jayco Caravan Accessories

Before you choose your caravan accessories, you should first look at what time of the year you are travelling. As well as where you plan to visit, and how.  The time of the year and climate are likely to affect how much power you will use.

Are you planning to go very remote and off the beaten path for an extended period? Then you are more likely to heavily rely on using power for fridges, water pumps, lighting, TVs etc.

The longer you plan to be away, you should have more:

  • Solar panels
  • Lithium power packs
  • Backup generators.

Solar Panels

One of the essential items that every caravan needs for off-grid free camping is solar panels.

Solar panels let you power your entire caravan with a renewable energy source. Epic forests, divine beaches, and white sand flowing provide the perfect background. But, the last thing you want to worry about is making sure that you can keep your food in the fridge cool. Or that your lights are going to go out at night.

What is Solar Power?

What exactly is ‘solar power’? Solar power is using the sun’s energy and then converting it into power which you can use.

It is a very cost-effective way of going off the grid. It allows you go to anywhere off the beaten path for extended periods. Best of all, you don’t need to rely on torchlight.

How To Use Solar Panels

You should think of solar as part of a caravan’s power supply system, rather than an accessory. That’s how important it is to keep your caravan running.

Having a reliable solar panel power supply is rather important when planning to go off the grid free camping. It allows you to use a large range of electrical appliances. Which helps add comfort to your trip, as well as enhance the caravanning lifestyle and keep you safe on the road.

For any energy system, the most important component is the battery. Every other component such as a battery charger, inverter or energy management equipment works with the battery.

Technician repairs a solar panel on a caravan roof, ensuring continued energy on the go.

A solar system provides an alternative energy source to a more traditional source such as a generator or alternator. Most caravans have a battery and battery charger installed, but when going off the grid, it’s not a good idea. Previously, most people would only use a generator to charge their battery when they went off the grid. But, over recent years, as technology has improved. It has also become more affordable. Solar panels are quickly replacing generators as an alternative power source.

A solar system will keep topping up your battery. This means that you (and your campsite neighbours) won’t have to deal with the constant noise and fumes from a generator as often!

Having a solar system, allows you to be self-sufficient and be able to indefinitely charge your battery for as long as you wish to stay off the grid. With a generator, once you run out of fuel, you can no longer charge your battery. A disadvantage of solar energy is that it quickly uses power for any continuously run high energy consumption appliances. It’s not a good idea to run things such as a toaster. Or an oven microwave, stove, air-conditioner, hair dryer, washing machine, or any appliance with a heating element on solar power. For these appliances, it’s still recommended to use a generator or an inverter generator.

Conventional generators

  • Produce electricity by using petrol or diesel to power a motor which attaches to an alternator.

Inverter generators

  • Use advanced electronic circuitry. The output is AC, which then gets converted to DC. The current is then inverted to clean AC power. Sound confusing? What it means is that it is suited for electronic equipment which is highly sensitive such as a laptop or TV.

Inverter generators are better for noise. As well as the quality of power output, fuel efficiency, weight, size and portability, as well as parallel operation. Conventional generators are better for affordability and providing a maximum power output. For their running time, both conventional generators and inverter generators perform about the same.

The Perfect Solar Panel Solution

The ideal situation is to have a mix of both fixed and portable solar panels. This lets you set up your caravan in the shade under a tree, and then you can lay out your portable panels or solar blankets in the sun. If you only have fixed panels, then you’ll need to park your caravan out in the scorching hot Australian sun to recharge.

Best 12 Volt Jayco Solar Panels

There are many 12 volt Jayco Solar Panels to select from. You can choose either a folding and portable panel which can be moved. Or a fixed solar panel which is mounted on your caravan.

Solar panels provide a continuous power source as long as the sun is shining, which makes them an ideal solution for long term off the grid camping. Depending on your power requirements, there are three capacities available.

The three models are:

Solar Panel Folding 175 Watt 12V 10 Amp Controller Camec

A portable solar panel rests on the ground, powering a caravan parked outdoors

The 175 W solar panel is a folding and portable solution. This lets you move the panels between vehicles and into a sunny location. Rather than fixed panels which are unable to charge if you are parked in the shade.

It includes a heavy-duty bag to make it easy to store when not in use.

If you need extra power, you can even daisy-chain them if you need to increase your power capacity in the future. This can be done by using an optional cable kit.

  • Dimensions (Open): 1105 mm x 1196 mm x 70 mm
  • Dimensions (Folded) 546 mm x 1196 mm x 145 mm
  • Weight: 22.4 kg

SOLAR PANEL 150 WATT 12 VOLT CAMEC

This is a fixed solar panel which has to be mounted onto your caravan. You only have to install it once then it will always work. A disadvantage is that if you park in the shade, you won’t be able to charge the panel.

  • Weight: 12.5 Kg
  • Dimensions: 674 mm x 1482 mm x 40 mm

SOLAR PANEL 90 WATT 12 VOLT CAMEC

This 90W fixed solar panel is an affordable entry-level solar panel. It makes a great option if you are only going off the grid for a short period. Or if you will be able to charge it daily. If you need more power, it’s always possible to add more panels.

  • Weight: 7.83 Kg
  • Dimensions: 1196 mm x 546 mm x 35 mm

Solar power is an easy and efficient way to power your caravan. You can mount solar panels to your caravan roof, have portable panels, or a combination of both.

Sunlight powers freedom: Caravan equipped with versatile solar panel products

But, it’s also strongly recommended to have a backup power supply to solar panels. For times where there is no sun during the winter, or you have parked in the shade, a solar blanket provides a great alternative.

Caravan embraces solar power for off-grid adventures and reduced reliance on external energy sources

RedArc Solar Blanket

A RedArc solar blanket is a perfect backup for whenever you are camping in a shady location, or when it is overcast during the winter, with no sun in sight.

RedArc has a range of different Solar Blankets.

The one that provides the greatest flexibility for most situations is the 115 W SunPower Cells Solar Blanket .

The solar blanket does as its name says, it provides power from the sun. It’s been designed for strength and portability, meaning you can move it frequently, without worrying about damaging a cell.

It folds into a small bag, making it easy to pack and store, instead of having to struggle with a large solar panel.

When compared to a glass folding panel, the SunPower blanket is about a third of the weight and has higher power output.

It’s also possible to attach the solar blanket to:

  • Your awning
  • The roof of your tent
  • The bonnet of your vehicle,
  • Or just about anywhere else

Book a 15-minute call with our head technician now for free (normally $65) to get started.

The SunPower Solar Blankets are also available in different watts:

  • 150 W Solar Blanket SunPower Cells
  • 190 W Solar Blanket SunPower Cells

Do you plan to go away for more extended periods without being able to charge your blanket? Or will you use it to power a significant amount of appliances? Then maybe it’s a good idea to consider either the 150W or 190W solar blanket. Although, for most users, the 115W blanket is enough.

Reduce reliance on external power: Caravan solar panels provide sustainable energy on the go

RedArc 112W Solar Blanket Amorphous Cells

Another RedArc solar blanket is the 112W Solar Blanket Amorphous Cells .

This RedArc solar blanket is state-of-the-art, the next generation of blankets. It provides a convenient and lightweight package but is almost double the price of the 115 W SunPower Cells Solar Blanket.

The design reduces the risk of any cracks or cell breaks, and it also performs better in the shade than the SunPower solar blanket.

Which RedArc Solar Blanket Is Right For Me?

Trying to decide which RedArc solar blanket is right to suit your off the grid free camping needs and requirements can be quite confusing.

Video explainer: Choosing the right RedArc solar blanket for your needs

RedArc has a handy guide on their website as well as a YouTube video to help you find the right size solar blanket for your needs,

Lithium Batteries

As well as solar panels, lithium batteries are a vital source of power for off the grid free camping. They are quickly becoming known as ‘the’ caravan battery.

But are they right for you?

Let’s take a look in further detail how they work, and if they would provide a benefit for you.

What are Lithium Batteries?

Lithium-Caravan Batteries for caravans are made of LiFePO4 (which is lithium iron phosphate). It is a more stable and safer version of original lithium batteries (LiCo02 – lithium cobalt oxide) which are used for digital cameras, laptops and phones.

LiFeP04 batteries are also commonly referred to as lithium-ion batteries.

jayco journey outback battery system

ePower 100AH Lithium Battery

Benefits of lithium batteries for caravans.

Lithium batteries are becoming more and more popular for off the grid free camping. Some of the many reasons why includes:

  • Lithium batteries are much lighter. Compared to traditional lead batteries with a similar capacity, lithium batters up are to 70% lighter
  • Lithium batteries can supply a higher current than other batteries. As an example, a 180Ah lithium battery is similar to a traditional lead battery which is 300Ah AGM.
  • Lithium batteries can be charged by either mains power, solar panels, or the alternator while driving.
  • Lithium batteries charge ultra-fast. Unlike traditional batteries, you don’t need to fully charge them before they are used. This is a great benefit if the solar power system of your caravan isn’t generating enough power to be able to charge a regular battery.
  • As lithium batteries are lighter and smaller, you can gain extra storage space. Also, it helps to reduce your payload, and improve the fuel efficiency of your rig.
  • Lithium batteries are also better for the environment. As they don’t contain corrosive acids or toxic heavy metals which are found in traditional lead batteries.

ePower 200Ah Lithium Battery

Should you get lithium batteries for your caravan?

Lithium caravan batteries are more efficient and lightweight. But, they are a lot more expensive than traditional batteries. Prices range between $2000 to $5000 per battery. You should ask yourself, what kind of caravanning will you be doing most of the time? Will you be staying in caravan parks where you can plug into electricity, and driving on freeways for most of the time?   If so, then lithium batteries probably aren’t a necessity for you. But, if you plan to go off the beaten path for extended periods, then you will likely be reliant on solar power for weeks at once.

In this situation, lithium batteries are essential accessories for off the grid free camping.

Buying lithium batteries will also save weight substantially, by replacing the old lead batteries you’ve had to rely on to go off the grid. You can save a minimum of 50% of the weight of batteries. You can also save a small amount on the cost of fuel. Lithium batteries are more expensive than lead batteries up front. But, over time they provide more efficiency, a longer life span, and also lighter weight. They are a significant long-term investment if you plan on frequent off the grid free camping.

jayco journey outback battery system

12 Volt Jayco Lithium Batteries

Jayco Lithium batteries come in a variety of different sizes generally ranging from 100 Ah to 200 Ah. There are some smaller ones available, but it’s recommended to have a battery with at least 100 Ah for shorter off grid trips. With up to 300 Ah worth of batteries for longer trips.

Battery Management Systems

Battery management systems are essential when you are camping off the grid for an extended period. This is because voltage drops can be a real problem.

What is a Battery Management System?

A battery management system (or BMS), connects your caravan (auxiliary) battery to your main battery. It also makes sure that the charge from the alternator will apply to the main battery. It does this by not sharing the charge with the auxiliary battery until the main battery has been fully charged.

A battery management system also protects the voltage of your main battery. By doing this, it allows your vehicle to start every time – even if there is heavy load relying on your auxiliary battery.

What Does a Battery Management System Do?

A high-quality battery management system can accept charges from multiple power sources besides the alternator.

These include:

  • 240V AC power from a generator or the grid
  • 12V or 24V power from solar energy

You can connect multiple power sources at the same time. The battery management system will seek the best charging method to use intuitively. If you have multiple power sources for your caravan, then a battery management system is essential.

Some caravans may come with a battery management system. But, if you add multiple sources of power, it’s recommended to upgrade to a more effective system.

RedArc Battery Management Systems

RedArc makes high quality and reliable battery management systems. The BMS tells you how much charge you are receiving from your sources, and also how much battery you are using.

You can easily keep an eye on your battery and charging levels this way, and make sure that you are never without power.

  • Add a diesel heater for things such as warming the van in cold environments. This will limit needing 240V when off the grid for only the reverse cycle air-conditioner.
  • Have a generator as a backup. Use it to run air-conditioners and chargers during extreme heat.

jayco journey outback battery system

This caravan, like all of our previous, is second hand having been bought from a caravan yard in South Australia. We are very happy with it and the service we got when we traded in our older van but there is one thing missing when you buy second hand and that is the handover you get where you learn all about the ins and outs of the van. Not that getting all the information at once means you will remember it all if and when something goes wrong. Other caravanning friends and caravan forums are a great source of information when you have tried all theories and are still stumped.

We recently had one of those moments when our caravan was parked at home and unattached from any power source, yet the brake lights were on. After much head scratching and trying different ideas, it was a question to a forum which gave a reason to try, possibly a flat battery for the caravan’s breakaway system. The breakaway system is the safety device fitted to the caravan and connected to the car via a cord from the A frame of the van, which in the event of uncoupling when you’re moving, applies the electric brake to the caravan. The battery for the system is located in the van and seeing as our van is now around 4 years old we decided to replace the breakaway battery with a new one, as it would have been the original one that came with the van. It comes with a test light which means its condition can now be checked and trickle charged if needed, then replaced again in around 2 years’ time.

Thinking that was problem sorted – we were wrong. A quick trip with car and van to a repair shop and of course it wouldn’t misbehave when in the shop but at home, the battery would drain overnight. Finally that meant the problem was obvious as being the actual breakaway switch on the A frame of the van. Out with the old and in with the new and we are now good to go.

Jayco silverline caravan

The other fix was another absolutely necessary one, to our wine glass holder system. Our Silverline came with a dedicated cupboard for wine glasses and the stems of the glasses clip into plastic holders for safe travelling. Looks great and sounds good in theory but being made of plastic, a couple of the lugs that hold the stems of the wine glasses in place, have snapped off so it has been with our trusty old method of carrying wine glasses, on a plastic coated wire rack. This system has worked for us in the past, when travelling half way around Australia and not one broken glass.

A few fixes and we are good to hit the road again in South Australia.

Love your idea for storing glasses. Much simpler and it works. Better than my method of throwing plastic glasses into a too small supermarket mushroom container then slamming the cup door quickly. We recently had our Breakaway system replaced only to have it fall off a few days into our trip. Now a brush turkey has pecked away the pool noodles on the guy ropes. There’s always something isn’t there?

Caravanning is such fun until things go wrong 😩 now the hot water service is playing up on gas but ok on 240. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The circuit board that controls it isn’t damp or damaged is it? On ours the board sits on the floor and thus gets wet when a fitting leaks. I’d love to meet the person who designed it!!! Good luck with it.

Thanks for the tip but we’ve had the circuit board checked, all ok, and a hundred other things checked, tested, and blown out and the latest dilemma is now it will start on gas and not cut off so we’re resigned to free camping for a couple of nights and then into a park for a night. We will be home from this trip in a week so will hand it over to an expert to deal with and they’ll no doubt charge us accordingly! I think it’s time for actual caravanners to design a van where common sense helps to sole issues, there have been many campfire chats with friends lately over all the mysteries of caravan design and the different things that go wrong.

Good luck! We’ve been having the same happy hour discussions about van design. Those of us who’ve been sailors reckon vans should be designed by women yachties. Why? Because yacht interiors manage space better. Women, I’ll leave that up to you.

🤔You’ve really got me thinking now.

I love your wine glass holder. I stick my stem ware into a hiking sock and put it in a drawer. Definitely less elegant!

Ha ha whatever works.

Good idea for the wine glasses, essential for any trip.

It just doesn’t taste the same out of plastic.

Certainly glad you got your wine glass holder sorted out. Can’t travel without that!

Glad you got that sorted – two very important things. 🙂

Forums are always a good source of information. Cheers to safe and happy travels Glenys. Enjoy!

Thanks Miriam although I can feel another blog post coming on…freecamping in winter when your hot water system doesn’t work on gas 😩. Looks like we will be in a caravan park soon.

Oh brrrr, that doesn’t sound like fun. We had some similar issues before lockdown when we were off the grid. You’ll be right.

Like you say it all makes for good stories 🤷🏼‍♀️
