'The Zone of Interest' Review: Jonathan Glazer’s Haunting, Restrained Journey into Evil

Glazer's approach to the Holocaust film is wholly unique and undeniably terrifying.

Before we see a single frame of The Zone of Interest , from Sexy Beast and Under the Skin director Jonathan Glazer , we can feel the all-encompassing nature of evil. As the words “The Zone of Interest” appear on the screen, they’re soon enveloped in darkness, swirled away into the black , fading away into a warped nightmare and Mica Levi ’s haunting score. Prior to the film even beginning, Glazer throws us into the droning terror, preparing us for his idiosyncratic take on the Holocaust story.

The Zone of Interest

The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.

When Glazer first shows us the Höss home, very little seems to be out of the ordinary . But this house shares a wall with Auschwitz, and while the Höss family seems idyllic at times, we’re always reminded of what is happening on the other side of that wall. On one side of that wall is an attempt at domestic normalcy, and on the other, some of the worst atrocities ever perpetuated in human history. Rudolf Höss ( The White Ribbon ’s Christian Friedel ) is the commandant of Auschwitz, and he and his wife Hedwig ( Sandra Hüller ) have come from very little, and now have the home of their dreams, complete with several kids, and a handful of Jewish women that work within their house.

Glazer—who also wrote the script based very loosely on Martin Amis ’ book of the same name—makes the story of the Höss family intentionally mundane. Hedwig shows her mother her expansive garden, which we can see stretches the length of an entire building on the other side of the wall, while Rudolf’s job involves finding more efficient ways to get rid of hundreds of bodies a day. No matter what the Höss family does, the agony of the other side of that wall permeates the day-to-day .

'The Zone of Interest' Takes a Terrifying Approach to the Holocaust Film

Glazer makes the surprisingly effective choice to never show us what is actually occurring in Auschwitz , and frankly, we don’t need to see what countless other movies have shown us. Glazer knows that we have already seen that story, and as the viewer, we bring our experience with these stories to this film, which fills in the blanks that he doesn’t show us. The result is a choice that is more unnerving than the film could ever show us visually.

But The Zone of Interest always reminds us of what is going on in subtle and extremely overt ways. As we follow the Höss family, we constantly hear gunshots, each one likely taking yet another life. While the Höss home has come to ignore these inconveniences, every shot is a jolt to the audience. When they decide to have a garden party, complete with a buffet of food and a pool, we can see the smoke from the trains wafting overhead. Combined with Levi’s twisted, unsettling and sparsely used score, The Zone of Interest is an aural shock—even when the world might seem normal on the surface .

Yet even Glazer’s more overt mentions of what is happening are jarring in their own right . One particular shot shows several of Hedwig’s flowers, as we hear blood-curdling screams, until the screen turns entirely red, which ends with an unexpected cut back to reality—as if we’re getting just a small dose of the panic and fear that is happening mere feet away. Glazer’s approach in these grander moments is especially powerful near the end of the film, as Rudolf has what seems to be a moment of self-awareness akin to the ending of Joshua Oppenheimer ’s incredible documentary The Look of Silence , spliced together with a vision of what will happen to all his hard work.

In a way, Glazer’s approach to Amis’s The Zone of Interest is fairly similar to how he adapted Michel Faber ’s Under the Skin : paring the spirit of the story down to its bare essence and telling that story primarily through impactful visuals. In the way that Under the Skin dissected the science fiction story, Glazer tears apart what we know a Holocaust story to be , showing us that pure evil isn’t necessarily always big and imposing, but rather, can be fairly banal and every day—an even more important message for today’s evils.

In adapting the Martin Amis novel, Glazer boils this story down to the pure evil that emanated from that book , a darkness that seeped into every page and through every action of these characters. Glazer’s take is far more abstract than the Amis story, allowing us to feel that rising tension, without prioritizing narrative or character. Essentially, Glazer is giving us the same impact that Amis was able to, but without speaking about this evil too directly. We can sense the darkness around every family gathering, we can hear the roar of the atrocities, and the indirect camera that is more of a viewer than an actual participant is able to show the normalcy of this family, which only makes what we’re not seeing even more terrifying.

Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller Are Unnerving in Their Characters' Mundane Lives

Even though Glazer is showing us the “normal” every day life of the Höss family, we still feel like some horror is just around the corner —literally and figuratively. This is largely because of the restrained performances by Friedel and Hüller, who go about their days aware of the impact they have on those around them and the power they wield. We’ve seen countless films about the Holocaust, and Glazer knows we’re bringing those experiences with us into The Zone of Interest . In not showing us what’s happening over the wall, we bring our past knowledge from other films into this story, and that makes the lack of knowing even more haunting and terrifying. We can hear the gunshots and the occasional screams, and we know what’s happening because we’ve already seen these horrors before. Even though we react at every reminder of what’s going on beyond the wall, the way that Hüller and Friedel are able to go about their business without even flinching shows us the evil within them that Glazer doesn’t have to present to us.

Friedel and Hüller are particularly excellent in presenting this idea, as they are able to present an air of dread even when they’re doing nothing directly monstrous. Simply their presence and acceptance of their situation makes them savage—they don’t have to oversell their clear nature. If anything, the clumsiest parts of The Zone of Interest come when Glazer has Rudolph and Hedwig directly telling the audience ideas we’ve already gathered through the context of the story , which ends up making them feel like Glazer hitting us over the head with things we already know. For example, when one of the Jewish women who works at the Höss household makes what seems like an honest mistake, Hedwig reminds that her husband could easily spread the poor woman’s ashes without nearly a thought. But considering that we’ve already seen the fear that these women live in as the Höss family servants, the potential of this type of scenario is already abundantly clear from the simple way they move around this family.

Glazer and cinematographer Łukasz Żal ( Cold War , Ida ) shoot The Zone of Interest mostly in the day and with natural light , once again presenting this home as a halcyon of happiness, which makes the narrative itself even more distressing. In the day, it’s easy to hide, but at night, it’s impossible to avoid the flames constantly burning in the darkness. It’s in the night where Glazer gives us small glimmers of hope, using negative film to invert the story, and show us how even the tiniest—but still immensely dangerous—attempts to fight back against the oppressors never let the hope entirely die down.

The Zone of Interest , like Son of Saul or The White Ribbon before it, finds ways to continue telling these important stories, but to do so in a way that presents these narratives in a wholly unique fashion . Glazer’s latest fits within his distinct style, breaking down a genre and working with the skeleton that’s left over in order to get at the heart of what makes these stories so jarring.

I've been practicing mindfulness throughout my life. It started as prayer and quiet moments in nature as a young girl, it expanded to yoga as a teenager, and in my 20s I began studying the concepts behind mindfulness. Meditation became part of my daily life after enduring much loss and grief. I quickly experienced the benefits and healing that meditation has to offer and neuroscience has proven. After 23 years in the corporate world coaching and helping others through human resources roles, I decided  to obtain a certification as a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher. I invite you to join me on this journey and experience these benefits for yourself.

Christine Dowding Schmitz is a Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher and the Founder of The Mindful Journey.  After graduating from Villanova University with degrees in Business and Communication, she studied with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach through the Power of Awareness Program and the 2-year Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program in conjunction with Sounds True and Berkeley.

For over 20 years, Christine has been serving others as a teacher, trainer, and coach for adults through various human resources roles in the corporate world. During this time, she obtained the following certifications to help develop employees and strengthen organizations: SPHR, SHRM-SCP, Mediation, DiSC, 360, and Korn Ferry's International Leadership Architect 101, Learning Agility Architect, Learning Agility Essentials and Learning Agility Assessments. She has also taught children as a Sunday school teacher and Girl Scout leader.

For almost a decade, Christine has practiced daily research-based mindfulness and meditation techniques that she shares with her clients to help them manage stress and emotions, improve relationships, increase focus and performance, enhance well-being, reduce pain symptoms, and find happiness and meaning in life.

After Florida State University alumnus Mike Ortoll lost his daughter to a drug overdose three years ago, he was down and depressed.

But he didn’t let that stop him from creating an award-winning 2023 documentary — “One Second at a Time: Battling the Monster of Addiction” — to bring awareness to substance abuse among young adults.

“It's really made by a dad who lost the person he cared about the most,” said Ortoll, 65, who is based in Tampa, Florida. He graduated from the university in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in risk management and insurance.

“This is what my daughter would want me to do,” Ortoll added.

“One Second at a Time'' is about the resilience and emotional journey of Christine Ortoll throughout her path in and out of recovery during a 10-year battle with substance use disorder and mental illness .

Chistine’s use of pot in middle school advanced to the misuse of pills while she was in high school, which led to the misuse of opiates after she graduated.

She went to over 20 rehab centers during her fight for sobriety and did not attend college since her parents didn't think it was safe, given that most institutions did not have recovery programs at the time.

Christine also had a desire to help others struggling with addiction, but after being sober for about three years, she died of a fentanyl overdose in November 2020 at the age of 26.

Her obstacles and struggles are told in the 80-minute docudrama through 60 journals that she wrote in to document her experiences and through the words of her parents and other loved ones.

“Watching it, you'll literally feel like you're on a roller-coaster ride,” Ortoll said.

In Christine’s own words from her journals, she said, “I do not want to be defined by my disease but remembered for helping those with it.”

Ortoll says when he started working on the film in fall 2021, it gave him the “desire to live again, find purpose and let go.”

The $750,000 film was created in partnership with the Christine Ortoll Charity — which produces mental health and substance abuse media — and Fire Pillar Entertainment along with film director Tim Searfoss.

The documentary has also won 56 film festival awards.

In the middle of filming “One Second at a Time,” Ortoll and his team started working on a 15-minute documentary called “The Safety Net,” which emphasizes the importance of college recovery programs across the nation that provide a safe space to students suffering from substance use disorder.

The mini-documentary, which cost nearly $40,000, highlights FSU’s collegiate recovery program, LIFT (Living Independently, Finding Togetherness) .

The LIFT program was established in 2018 and has a space for students on the fourth floor of FSU's Thagard Building.

With Ortoll’s help, the recovery program grew from having just a handful of participants in 2021 to over 1,000 engaged individuals in 2022 along with 40 staff members who work with them — including a full time coordinator, a liaison to FSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services Department and graduate assistants.

“Everyone has been touched by addiction in some way, shape or form, and everyone probably knows somebody that is struggling,” said FSU Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Angela Chong , who oversees LIFT.

“The films are very powerful and resonate with our students, family members and alumni across the board to raise awareness for this really important issue.”

Besides the two main documentaries, Ortoll has worked on other initiatives related to substance misuse, including a short documentary titled “Second Chance” about Jane Dwyer Lee — an FSU teaching professor and licensed clinical social worker who was formerly incarcerated for five years for killing her boyfriend in a car accident while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

"There's tremendous healing power when people share their stories," Lee said. "Mike's doing that, and that's what he did in my story, too. It can be quite humbling to share your tragic story, but for the greater good, I think it gives hope and promotes healing. That's why I do it."

Lee overcame the challenges that followed, earned her master's degree from FSU in social work and has been teaching at the university for about 10 years. She has also been sober for 25 years.

“This has changed my life, and It’s been an amazing ride,” Ortoll said as he reflected on his work. “I have purpose by carrying out my daughter's legacy, and I know that all our media is so powerful that it'll resonate with people in the way it needs to.”

As “The Safety Net” shares a strong message with college students, FSU’s College of Social Work is looking to incorporate the film into its regular curriculum.

In addition, a screening of "One Second at a Time" was recently hosted by the College of Social Work on FSU's campus Monday while Ortoll was in town, where he met with the Florida Department of Children to discuss more funding for substance abuse awareness initiatives in the state.

The mini-documentary is slated to expand to eight other colleges — including the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida — while the docudrama “One Second at a Time” is expected to be on major free streaming platforms in about a month, Ortoll said.

Best New Horror Movies To Watch in April 2024

While April showers bring May flowers, finding something to do in the meantime is easy for horror movie fans. This month, a diverse array of scary movies are set to hit the screens, from foreign horrors to movies with some seriously traumatized children. Nicolas Cage continues to grind out the work with another entry for the horror drama, which certainly won’t be his last year. It’s another month of potential classics coming your way, and here are the top seven you won't want to miss.

Based on the original short film of the same name, Baghead reimagines old ghost stories. From the producers of It and Barbarian , the film tells the story of a young woman who inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement: Baghead. This shape-shifting creature will show that speaking to lost loved ones is not without consequences. Freya Allan ( The Witcher ) stars in this plot twist-heavy creature feature that will make your skin crawl.

'The First Omen'

The First Omen is a prequel to its almost 50-year-old predecessor, The Omen , that tells the origins of the Antichrist, Damien. The new movie explores the events leading up to Damien's birth, unearthing the chilling beginnings of one of the most evil beings on the big screen. With a cast including Bill Nighy ( Love Actually ) as Cardinal Lawrence and Nell Tiger Free ( Servant ) as Margaret Daino, the latest installment in the influential franchise has a lot of promise. The 2006 remake had less than stellar responses from critics, but this new perspective of the iconic movie takes us on a journey with an American woman who travels to the Italian church where she uncovers this spawn of Satan. It promises to deepen the dark mythology and religious iconography that has fascinated audiences for decades.

Sting is a horror film directed by Kiah Roache-Turner , that follows a 12-year-old girl named Charlotte ( Alyla Browne ) and her pet spider that transforms into a giant flesh-eating monster. Charlotte is a bit of an intrepid child, and while her parents are distracted by their newborn, she turns to the creepy crawlies with a strange fascination. What starts as an innocent, albeit somewhat disturbing, friendship, Charlotte eventually has to fight the arachnid to save herself and her family, along with the other inhabitants of their New York apartment building. The film not only terrifies, but also serves as a cautionary tale of neglect, the need for attention, and the unforeseen consequences.

'In Flames'

In Flames is a Pakistani-Canadian film that was originally released in 2023. However, its success overseas has enabled it to see a limited release in American theaters. The movie is a very uniquely haunting exploration of societal and supernatural forces that oppress women. Set in Karachi, Pakistan, it tells the story of Mariam ( Ramesha Nawal ), a woman whose life is upended by visions that connect her to a past filled with secrets and danger. The film's critical success has led it to become Pakistan's entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

Arcadian is one of the newest additions to post-apocalyptic horror, where survival is not just a struggle against the elements but also the monstrous. Starring Nicolas Cage, Jaeden Martell ( It ), and Maxwell Jenkins (Reacher), the film follows a family isolated in a remote farmhouse that has to fight off creatures whenever the sun sets. Not only are the creatures in this feature impressively designed, but it also delivers a gripping story of family and resilience in the face of unimaginable horrors. Arcadian captures our primal fear of the dark and takes on the deceptively complex genre of survival horror.

Abigail is an upcoming horror comedy by directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin , who are known for their work on Scream (2022) and Scream VI . Abigail serves as a reimaging of the classic Universal Monster movie Dracula's Daughter ; however, in this version, the antagonist is a young girl named Abigail ( Alisha Weir ). When a group of kidnappers abduct Abigail, hoping to collect a $50 million ransom from her wealthy father, they quickly discover they’ve made a huge mistake. Melissa Barrera ( Scream ), Dan Stevens ( Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ), Kathryn Newton ( Lisa Frankenstein ), Giancarlo Esposito ( The Mandalorian ), and the late Angus Cloud ( Euphoria ) also star in the monster movie.

'Late Night With the Devil'

Set in 1977, a live television broadcast goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms. Late Night With The Devil is a found-footage film focusing on the paranormal. While most of the film is centered around the late-night show, David Dastmalchian delivers a standout performance as Jack Delroy. He fully embodies this character, and that only adds to the eerie nature of it all. While Late Night With The Devil might've flown under the radar, it's a film you don't want to miss. You can watch it in theaters right now or wait for it to hit Shudder later this month.

In another foreign horror genre addition, Infested is a French film that made its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Arachnophobes have another reason to fear this month as the film takes a serious tone in its depiction of a spider infestation in a rundown apartment building. The residents must battle against an army of deadly, rapidly reproducing spiders. Kaleb ( Théo Christine ), a young man on the brink of 30, introduces the eight-legged monsters when he brings a venomous spider into his apartment. Infested is expected to not only be a horror film, but it will also examine the disparity of inequality in housing, using the film to highlight the real-life horrors associated with neglected living conditions and the vulnerabilities of those residing in such environments.

The satirical horror film Humane marks the directorial debut of Canadian photographer Caitlin Cronenberg , the daughter of legendary body-horror filmmaker David Cronenberg . The entire film plays out over a single day following a global economic collapse that has forced world leaders to come up with a way to minimize the earth's population. During a family dinner, the father announces that he will be joining the government’s new military assigned to the morbid euthanasia of humanity, much to the surprise and dismay of his relatives. Since IFC Films and Shudder picked up distribution rights, the film is set to be released in theaters and will also become available on the streaming service in the summer.

Christine Quinn’s Husband Files For Divorce After Being Arrested Twice Following Alleged Domestic Violence Incident

The former 'Selling Sunset' star wed Christian Dumontet in December 2019 before welcoming their son in May 2021

Christine Quinn ’s husband Christian Dumontet has filed for divorce.

The news comes weeks after he was arrested twice for violating temporary restraining orders. TMZ was first to report that Dumontet filed for divorce in the Superior Court of California on Friday, April 5. 

PEOPLE reached out to reps for both Quinn, 35, and Dumontet, 44, but did not immediately hear back.

In documents obtained and reviewed by PEOPLE, Dumontet requested a dissolution of their marriage citing irreconcilable differences.

Dumontet is asking that a judge terminate the court's ability to award support to Quinn, as well as separate their property and assets.

He is also requesting legal custody of their only child, Christian George. However, Dumontet did state that he would allow Quinn visitation rights. 

He and the former Selling Sunset star tied the knot in December 2019 before  welcoming their son in May 2021.

At the center of their ongoing dispute was an alleged domestic violence incident that took place in their home in which Dumontet allegedly threw a bag with a glass bottle inside of it at Quinn on March 19. He was arrested following the alleged incident.

In a statement to PEOPLE at the time, the LAPD confirmed that the father missed her but hit their son , who was treated by paramedics.

He was charged with assault with a "deadly weapon," according to a statement from law enforcement. 

The following day, Dumonte was arrested for a second time at their home, after allegedly violating an emergency protective order that had been put in place.

This resulted in Quinn's request for a temporary restraining order . Dumontet later filed for a restraining order of his own , claiming "there was no glass in the bag."

A judge recently approved Quinn’s request.

Her temporary restraining order for "domestic violence prevention" was approved on March 28 and stated that Dumontet had to vacate their shared Hollywood home where the alleged incident took place.

He must also not come within 100 yards (300 feet) of her, her home, her vehicle, her job, or their child’s “school or childcare.”

The order is in effect until a hearing scheduled for April 17.
