If you enjoyed Jungle Cruise, there is an entire genre of action-adventure romps in exotic locales to check out that you'll also have a blast with.

Disney's latest theme park-inspired movie Jungle Cruise  was released this summer to the delight of action-adventure fans everywhere. Adventures in the exotic with ties to curses, monsters, and hidden treasures have been gracing theatres with their presence for many years— so with a wide array of classics to draw upon, it's little surprise that Disney's river romp has been given two thumbs up by audiences. The action-adventure genre is brimming with hits that Jungle Cruise 's vines are tied to, films that bring the same brand of mischief, mayhem, and magic to the movie screen.

10 National Treasure Is Further Proof That Disney Are No Strangers To Finding Cinematic Gold

With high-octane action and a wild premise that never takes itself too seriously, National Treasure stole the hearts of many fans upon release in 2004. In what is almost a signature move for Disney, the film maintains truly captivating high stakes whilst keeping the on-screen terrors tolerable for the entire family.

National Treasure also boasts an absolutely golden cast including Nicolas Cage , Sean Bean, Harvey Keitel, and Jon Voight. The movie was such a smash hit that a sequel,  National Treasure: Book of Secrets , followed in 2007.

9 Jumanji Is More Jungle Fun, With Even More Dwayne Johnson

Before Disney's Jungle Cruise , Dwayne Johnson and the jungle already made for a perfect mix in the hit family adventure Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle . With the help of the eclectic team of Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart, Johnson utilized his irresistible charisma and bountiful biceps to make the  Jumanji  sequel the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2017.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a hilarious and highly enjoyable excursion of the cinematic variety, and also features touching tributes to the original film's star and  cinema legend Robin Williams .

8 The Theme Park Movie Doesn't Get Better Than Pirates of the Caribbean

The original Disney theme park movie set a near untouchable standard in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl . One of cinema's finest action-adventure movies— and the launching point for a franchise that has earned almost $5 billion at the box office—  Pirates features an electric and career highlight performance from Johnny Depp.

Jungle Cruise 's creators almost certainly took inspiration from the swashbuckling classic, and who can blame them?  Pirates of the Caribbean's rollercoaster of a story, its captivating characters, and its exciting action scenes all make for an excellent template when it comes to action-adventure movies.

7 Hook Is A Heartwarming Throwback To Classic Fantasy Films

For an adventure of the most fantastical variety, look no further than the Steven Spielberg classic Hook . While the presence of Robin Williams alone is enough to pique the interest of most potential viewers, the additions of Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts, and Bob Hoskins will surely seal the deal.

Hook is the tale of an adult Peter Pan, played by Williams, who ventures to Neverland in order to save his children and rediscover his past along the way. It's a heartwarming, exhilarating, and magical motion picture.

6 The Rock Has Been Romping In The Jungle Since The Rundown

Before Dwayne Johnson was a bonafide Hollywood megastar, he was finding his footing in Tinseltown whilst building upon his tremendous popularity as a professional wrestler . The Rock showed promise from the onset, but one of the most enjoyable outings from his early acting career is 2003's The Rundown .

RELATED: Fast & Furious: 10 Other Car Based Action Movies Fans Should Check Out

Similar to Jungle Cruise , The Rundown is a jungle adventure that relies heavily on Johnson's talents as a leading man, only this time he's aided by the often hilarious Seann William Scott and the ever-iconic Christopher Walken. The Rundown also features action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger in something of a baton-passing cameo that holds up well today considering Dwayne Johnson's many successes in film.

5 Raiders Of The Lost Ark Is The Very Best Of Action-Adventure Cinema

When searching for the king of the adventure movie, one would not be surprised if in place of a crown rested the famous fedora of Indiana Jones. Raiders of the Lost Ark is widely considered to be one of the finest films ever created, and Harrison Ford's main character has become an entertainment juggernaut since debuting in 1981.

RELATED: 10 Movie Franchises That Went One Too Many

Awards, fanfare, and its place in the National Film Registry are all testament to the incredible quality and significance of Raiders of the Lost Ark . It is lonely at the top, as there is little competition for Spielberg's classic when it comes to cinema's greatest adventure movies.

4 Movies In The Jungle Come In All Shapes & Sizes, But None Are Quite Like Mighty Joe Young

The '90s offered up its fair share of creature features, but whilst the majority of oversized animals and mythical behemoths took center stage as the villains, 1998's Mighty Joe Young gave audiences a far more friendly figure. The film focuses on a giant mountain gorilla and the struggles to keep it safe and out of the hands of poachers.

Charlize Theron and Bill Paxton star as protectors of the titular gorilla, and special effects master Rick Baker's exceptional costume and makeup design ensure that the ape is as huggable as he is huge.

3 The African Queen Is The Classic River Cruise

The one true classic riverboat adventure, John Huston's The African Queen sailed straight into the history books upon its release in 1951, receiving multiple Academy Awards nominations and providing one of the all-time greats in Humphrey Bogart with his only Best Actor win.

Along with fellow screen legend Katharine Hepburn, Bogart displays his typically unmatched charisma to enhance the laughs and the thrills in The African Queen. The film remains hugely influential, with numerous movies over the last 70 years taking inspiration from the Technicolor classic.

2 The Mummy Offers Up A Little Fright With Its Fun

Another film with striking similarities to Jungle Cruise is the 1999 action-adventure The Mummy . A remake of the Boris Karloff classic, the film was hugely successful, even spawning two sequels, a Dwayne Johnson-starring prequel, and a spinoff animated series.

There are curses and traps aplenty, and The Mummy made Brendan Fraser a genuine box office star. It's both exciting and terrifying, with some hilarious comic relief thrown in for good measure provided by Scottish great John Hannah.

1 Romancing The Stone Is A Feel-Good '80s Adventure In The Rainforest

Jungle adventures simply don't get much more fun than Romancing the Stone . Directed by the legendary Robert Zemeckis of Back to the Future fame, Romancing the Stone  is one of the many classics heavily influenced by  Raiders of the Lost Ark  but does more than enough to separate itself and stand proudly on its own.

The comedy hits as hard as the romance and the action, leaving viewers with a feel-good, thrilling, and highly humorous picture. Romancing the Stone also features expectedly brilliant performances from Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas, and Danny DeVito.

Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser in The Mummy

The Mummy (HBO Max)

Released in 1999, Stephen Sommers’ throwback adventure film The Mummy follows an Egyptian expedition consisting of bookworm Evelyn Carnahan ( Rachel Weisz ), her brother Jonathan Carnahan (John Hannah), and the dashing Rick O’Connell ( Brendan Fraser ) as they come face-to-face with the unspeakable horror of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), who has been resurrected thousands of years after he was buried alive and placed under a curse.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Jungle Cruise: As CinemaBlend previously pointed out, there are a lot of times where Jungle Cruise felt like a remake of The Mummy . These comparisons range from the bickering and banter between each film’s leads to both movies taking place in the early 20th Century to even the amazing opening narrations in each. Most of all, both are a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas in Romancing The Stone

Romancing The Stone (Amazon Rental)

One of the best Robert Zemeckis movies , 1984’s Romancing the Stone is a romp of a good time that follows successful yet lonely romance writer Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) as she heads into the heart of the Colombian jungle to save her sister from being killed by a group of antiquities smugglers. Together with the brash and dashing Jack T. Colton (Michael Douglas), Joan sets out on a thrilling and memorably journey.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Jungle Cruise: At the heart of Romancing the Stone and Jungle Cruise are stories about two people from completely different backgrounds and temperaments who form an unlikely yet unbreakable bond despite the odds. It doesn’t hurt that both of these films have maniacal villains hot on their tails throughout and plenty of swinging from ropes and vines.

Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen

The African Queen (Amazon Prime)

Directed by John Huston, the 1951 romantic adventure film The African Queen follows British missionary Rose Sayer (Katherine Hepburn) and alcoholic boat captain Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart) as they evade capture (or worse) at the hands of German forces at the start of the first World War.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Jungle Cruise: One of the best movies on Amazon Prime , The African Queen is a perfect choice for anyone wanting more movies like Jungle Cruise . While there are no mythical flowers or cursed conquistadors, the movie does hit a lot of the same notes as the new Disney film and has one of the best on-screen pairings with Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart.

Stream The African Queen on Amazon.

Hugh Jackman in The Fountain

The Fountain (Tubi)

Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain features three intertwined narratives that all center on one central idea: the quest for immortality. Told through the eyes of a 16th Century conquistador, a present-day scientist, and a 26th Century astronaut (all played by Hugh Jackman), this epic love story explores just how far someone will go in order to save someone they love.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Jungle Cruise: There aren’t any river boats (or Germans) in The Fountain , but a third of the movie is devoted to the story of a conquistador traveling into the heart of the jungle to find the mythical fountain of youth with hopes of saving his queen. This is quite similar to the backstory of Jungle Cruise ’s Aguirre (Édgar Ramírez) who became forever trapped in the rainforest when his quest to save his daughter went awry.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle follows a group of four teenagers as they are trapped in a mysterious video game that transports them to a dangerous land where they must survive all sorts of hazards and multiple puzzles if they want to beat the game and make it back home.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Jungle Cruise: Fans of Dwayne Johnson’s performance in Jungle Cruise will love his turn in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle due to comedic timing and all around badassery. It’s silly and campy at times but this movie is a blast and a great way to spend a family movie night.

The Mosquito Coast (Amazon Rental)

The 1986 drama The Mosquito Coast follows the idealistic Allie Fox (Harrison Ford) as he uproots his family and sets out for a Caribbean Island where he plans to create a utopia free of the consumerism and pitfalls of modern life in America. His plan, however, is inherently flawed and puts his life, as well as his family, in grave danger.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Jungle Cruise: The Mosquito Coast isn’t as cheery or upbeat as Jungle Cruise but it does touch on some of the same themes, topics, and locales. Both movies center on characters obsessed with achieving their goal, no matter what they stand to lose in the process while also featuring people from completely different walks of life (and civilizations) meeting for the first time.

Klaus Kinski in Fitzcarraldo

Fitzcarraldo (Tubi)

Werner Herzog’s 1982 epic Fitzcarraldo tells the story of ambitious and opera-obsessed European Brian Fitzgerald (Klaus Kinski) as he sets out to make his dream come true of building a music hall in his small Peruvian city. To generate enough money to fund his project, Fitzgerald decides to enter the rubber industry, but there is one catch: the massive boat he wishes to use is on the other side of a mountain. With the help of a local native tribe, the eager man comes one step closer to reality.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Jungle Cruise: If you thought you would never see anything crazier than a German submarine traversing the Amazon River in Jungle Cruise wait until you see the cast of Fitzcarraldo drag a massive ship up and down a mountain range. In his novel Herzog on Herzog , Werner Herzog revealed that he and the production crew built a 320-ton steamboat and moved it over a hill.

The Aguirre, the Wrath of God cast

Aguirre, The Wrath Of God (Tubi)

Also directed by Werner Herzog, the 1972 historical drama Aguirre, the Wrath of God follows ruthless Spanish conquistador Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski) as he pushes through the heart of the jungle in search of the mythical city of gold known as El Dorado. As the vicious leader of an expedition travels deeper into the jungle he becomes less and less attached to reality, eventually descending into madness.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Jungle Cruise: This 1972 epic features the first on-screen portrayal of the real-life Don Lope de Aguirre, a figure that would show up again in Jungle Cruise but it’s hard to say which version is more insane by the end of the tale. Much darker than the new Disney movie, this Werner Herzog classic is a grim exploration of what obsession and greed can do to a man.

Edgar Ramirez Jungle Cruise

Romancing the Stone (1984)

Romancing The Stone

Although dismissed by many critics at the time as a Raiders of the Lost Ark knockoff, Romancing the Stone was written earlier than the release of the first Indiana Jone s movie. And honestly, it is just another great ’80s adventure movie with little similarity to the earlier hit. While Raiders is more an homage to old adventure films with male heroes, this effort, scripted by Diane Thomas, is a tribute to romance novels and centers on a woman character (Kathleen Turner). Yes, she does wind up with an Indiana Jones-type (Michael Douglas), whom she bickers with African Queen style, but she’s the primary lead, similar to Emily Blunt in the Jungle Cruise movie.

The plot follows a romance novelist who finds herself in a perilous journey mixed with a love story not unlike the books she writes. She heads to a South American jungle to locate a secret treasure and save her kidnapped sister. Along the way, she meets and teams up with a bird smuggler who’s a bit of a scoundrel and who only wants in on the adventure for personal gain. Turner and Douglas have excellent chemistry that makes their characters’ sexual tension believable in a way that Blunt and Johnson also, surprisingly, do in Jungle Cruise .

More suggested viewing: Cocoon (1985), which Robert Zemeckis was developing when he was fired and then moved onto Romancing the Stone and which involves MacGuffins that heal and extend life; The Jewel of the Nile (1985), the Romancing the Stone sequel that is undeniably a lesser effort but is still very entertaining thanks to its returning main cast.

Romancing the Stone is available to rent at your favorite digital outlet.

The Mummy (1999)

Brendan Fraser The Mummy

Universal’s action-fantasy reboot of its The Mummy property is probably one of the most influential blockbusters of the last twenty-five years, for better and worse. Of course, it’s a product of 1930s and 1940s monster movies and adventure movies as well as the Indiana Jones franchise, by way, also, of the 1950s and 1960s fantasy adventure flicks featuring Ray Harryhausen special effects. In the decades since, it has served as a model for the comedic-tinged fantasy adventure movie even more than Raiders has, if only because it’s a bit more easily mimicked and has a lot more special effects-driven supernatural elements.

The Mummy also directly connects to Jungle Cruise in focusing on a brother and sister who team up with a rogue adventurer. The trio travels to the “City of the Dead” in Egypt, where they encounter a cursed member of a long-ago time who has become a monster.  Sound familiar? Of course, the sister character is a strong-willed adventurer in her own right with an independent nature but who falls for the obnoxious male hero by the end anyway.

More suggested viewing: The Mummy Returns (2001), the first sequel to The Mummy , which began the movie acting career of Jungle Cruise ‘s Dwayne Johnson, then a professional wrestler, and it spawned his own prequel vehicle, The Scorpion King (2002); The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), which involves a place with healing and life-extending powers.

The Mummy is now streaming on HBO Max.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Pirates Of The Caribbean Adventure

Disney’s first big blockbuster hit based on one of their theme park rides, the original Pirates of the Caribbean is still an excellent fantasy adventure movie , even if it rehashes a lot of elements from the likes of Star Wars , Cutthroat Island , and The Mummy , and even though it has spawned a franchise with exponentially lesser sequels. I was a bit shocked at how much of the POTC formula Disney recycled for Jungle Cruise with the undead cursed men made out of other creatures (like Davy Jones in the first sequel) and a magical MacGuffin. I wonder if it’s possible to do an adventure movie without supernatural and fantasy elements anymore.

Here’s what Jungle Cruise producer Hiram Garcia told us about the special connection between POTC and the new attraction adaptation:

“I remember [Dwayne Johnson] saying specifically when he first saw that ‘ Pirates of the Caribbean’  trailer, just how enamored he was with it and how much he admired what Disney was doing by bringing that ride to life. He always felt like, ‘God, I hope I get to a point where I can do one of those projects with Disney.’”

I guess Dwayne Johnson has the honor of being the Johnny Depp of  Jungle Cruise  while Emily Blunt and Jack Whitehall are the Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom parts, only now they’re siblings rather than a boring romantic pairing. And Édgar Ramírez is Barbossa? The plots of the movies aren’t really that related, however, until the quest-oriented narrative of the fourth POTC  installment.

More suggested viewing: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006); Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007); Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), which is not as great as the first three but one that relates kind of too much to Jungle Cruise in dealing with the search for the Fountain of Youth.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl  is currently streaming on Disney+.

The Fountain (2006)

The Fountain

Darren Aronofsky’s cult classic sci-fi film follows three narratives at different times in history. One involves a conquistador (Hugh Jackman) searching for the Tree of Life, which heals wounds and extends life. Never mind that this movie’s version of the myth and exploration takes place in Central America rather than South America. There is also a present-day storyline in The Fountain , in which a scientist (also Jackman) attempts to cure his sick wife using an elixir from a tree in Central America, which is similar to why Blunt’s character wants to find the Tree of Life in Jungle Cruise : to help people.

More suggested viewing: Medicine Man (1992), in which Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco are a mismatched pair of scientists in the Amazon working on a cure for cancer before the rainforest is destroyed;  Amazon  (1997), an Oscar-nominated documentary short film about the search for medicinal plants in the Amazon.

The Fountain is currently streaming on Tubi.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

Welcome To The Jungle

Would Jungle Cruise exist without this Jumanji reboot sequel? Yes, but would it exist in its ultimate form as a Dwayne Johnson vehicle? Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle showed Johnson could have a huge hit as a classic adventure hero in a jungle setting facing off against both natural and supernatural threats. When Disney’s movie was gearing up for production, some reporters referenced the similarities between it and Welcome to the Jungle , even suggesting that Disney was trying to ride Sony’s success . It’s no coincidence that my own son saw part of a trailer for Jungle Cruise  and thought it was an ad for another  Jumanji  installment.

In the movie, Johnson plays one of a handful of avatars inside a kind of virtual existence video game where he stands in for an unconfident teenager. As the brawny archaeologist and explorer Dr. Xander Bravestone, the kid has to lead his friends through a non-specific jungle (filmed in Hawaii, like Jungle Cruise ; both movies also shot on stages in Atlanta) to find a magical MacGuffin. Like Johnson’s character in Jungle Cruise , Bravestone survives some situations that should kill him as well, albeit for a different reason.

More suggested viewing: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012), a sequel that brought in Johnson for a Jules Verne-inspired adventure tale; Jumanji: The Next Level (2019).

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is currently streaming on Fubo TV and FX Now.

Missing Link (2019)

Missing Link

The most recent animated feature from Laika kept coming to my mind while watching Jungle Cruise, despite the fact that none of it takes place in the time period or primary location of Disney’s new live-action adventure. But Missing Link does begin with a man (voiced by The Fountain ‘s Hugh Jackman) in England being rejected by a scientific society to which he wishes to belong. He then goes off on his expedition to prove himself correct and does just that with his discovery of a Bigfoot. I was also reminded, by Blunt’s character in Jungle Cruise, of the strong-willed female adventurer in this movie, voiced by Zoe Saldana.

I do think that both Missing Link and Jungle Cruise lose some of their charm and spirit in their final acts, but until then they have an exhilarating air to their old-fashioned explorer narratives where anything can happen. Both movies also have rather forgettable adversaries who are following the heroes in their expedition, despite both having familiar voices I do enjoy.

More suggested viewing: Up (2009), Pixar’s film in which a scientific explorer goes missing in South America trying to prove the existence of something nobody else believes;  Moana  (2016), another movie involving Dwayne Johnson as an annoying man whom an adventurous woman needs in order to find a magical MacGuffin.

Missing Link is currently streamingly on Hulu.

The 12 Best Jungle Adventure Movies, Ranked

Are you brave enough to venture into the wild?

Movies in the adventure and suspense genre tend to get our hearts racing with the fast-paced action and the mysterious wilderness setting. No one knows what will pop up on the screen from which direction to startle their senses. Whether it’s a quest to unearth lost treasures, or a journey to find the center of the earth, the best jungle movies always have loads of entertainment for the audiences in store.

Some might think this genre is a little over-explored with various movies finding their own jungle to get lost in, but the charm of having an unknown wild adventure never ceases to amuse. It’s always fun to see filmmakers come up with an engaging backstory and hilarious characters to make the jungle adventure movie one heck of a ride. Fans of this genre find comfort in such forest movies and strive to live vicariously through them. There's no shortage of the best adventure movies that heavily use the jungle setting to tell their fun and exciting stories. Which are the ones worth seeing at least once?

12 'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' (2012)

Directed by brad peyton.

An ambitious sequel to the 2008 blockbuster Journey to the Center of the Earth , this feature film stars wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson , Josh Hutcherson , and Vanessa Hudgens , who set out in response to a cryptic signal received from deep within the forest. They venture in pursuit of Sean’s lost grandfather.

Both movies are adapted from epic stories written by Jules Verne . Watch Journey 2: The Mysterious Island for golden comedy, amusing sequences, and obviously the awesome Dwayne Johnson . Its cheesy comedy and formulaic plot aren't for cinephiles, but it's likely one of the guilty pleasure movies that some viewers watch for an uplifted mood.

11 'Uncharted' (2022)

Directed by ruben fleischer.

Starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg , Uncharted follows the undiscovered ventures of Ferdinand Magellan with a desire to find the lost treasure. Existing fans of the game were very excited to see a feature film explore the world of the beloved game, but Uncharted 's adaptation turned out to be nothing like the source material.

While Holland managed to capture Nate's charm, wit, humor, and heart in a way that was uniquely his own, it couldn't make up for the boring plot, missed opportunities, and questionable deviations from the game's story that the creators decided to include. Still, for fans looking for a mindless flick on a boring night, Uncharted offers its fair share of fun action sequences, but not much else .

10 'The Lost City' (2022)

Directed by adam nee, aaron nee.

Nestled in the plot of the adventure movie The Lost City is a romantic arc that brings together an author and her cover model who goes overlooked otherwise. This modern take on the genre finds Sandra Bollock and Channing Tatum in the wild with an evil Daniel Radcliffe hampering their every move. The unlikely pair must learn to work together if they hope to survive long enough to find the treasure.

The wild plot certainly managed to capture the attention of the viewers, even though most of the jokes didn't land. The Lost City reels you in with the mystic fonts and the legend of a hidden treasure that delighted the kings and queens for centuries, even if many of these hooks are unfortunately predictable clichés. If for nothing else, the movie is a perfect watch just for the unexpected Brad Pitt cameo .

9 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' (2008)

Directed by steven spielberg.

The fourth installment in the beloved adventure franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull follows the exhilarating journey of the titular archaeologist ( Harrison Ford ), who pursues an artifact with immense power. Alongside an old flame, Marion Ravenwood ( Karen Allen ), Indy travels to the depths of the forests of Peru before being captured and taken to the Amazon.

Although not the best in the massive Indiana Jones franchise , The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull still offers exciting action and gut-busting humor for fans who love the character . It’s also just nostalgic to revisit the legendary films now that its final installment had its disappointing premiere. If anything, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is worth watching just for that one epic motorcycle scene.

Indiana Jones becomes entangled in a Soviet plot to uncover the secret behind mysterious artifacts known as the Crystal Skulls.

8 'Jungle Cruise' (2021)

Directed by jaume collet-serra.

Jungle Cruise was highly anticipated as it brought two very talented and amazing actors together on screen – Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson . In this adventurous escapade, fans see a doctor and her brother embark on a trip to the lush Amazon forests to find a lost tree with supposed magical powers.

Of course, their journey has hindrances caused by evil villains who want to use the tree for their malicious purposes and spread their villainous agenda. Jungle Cruise is a fun way to enjoy the marvelous setting and get lost in the world of the Amazon. Don't expect any innovative twists or brilliant writing, though, as it's a basic jungle adventure movie that doesn't try to be anything else. For those looking for a family-friendly flick, this is the perfect one – enjoy it enough and there's a sequel available to watch, too!

Jungle Cruise

7 'jumanji: welcome to the jungle' (2017), directed by jake kasdan.

Even with a simple plot, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is so hilarious that it's impossible not to laugh. The film embraces the ridiculous concept of being sucked into a video game – which the original Jumanji game transformed into to fit modern times – but never insults the intelligence of the audience. Adult avatars from the present play alongside other players stuck in the game since the '90s, and they all desperately try to escape.

Featuring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart , Jack Black , Karen Gillan , and a sweet cameo by Nick Jonas , this film is an action extravaganza made to entertain. It does take inspiration from the vintage classic Jumanji game but comes out with a clearer direction and plot. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle may not live up to its predecessors, but there's no denying it's at least decently entertaining.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

6 'Tropic Thunder' (2008)

Directed by ben stiller.

Tropic Thunder has failings, but at its core, it is an absurd and deliciously wicked satire movie that exposes everything that is wrong with Hollywood. Parodying many classic films based on the Vietnam War, Tropic Thunder follows a group of obnoxious actors shooting their own war movie. When their director accidentally dies in an accident after leaving them in a jungle, the actors have to use what little skills they have to make it out alive.

Tropic Thunder is packed with hilarious and endlessly quotable lines , as well as two scene-stealing performances by Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise . Some of the best comedians and actors of the twenty-first century kicked off the century with a bang in this massive ensemble production that lived up to the hype at the time of its release and is still beloved by fans today.

Tropic Thunder

5 'king kong' (2005), directed by peter jackson.

King Kong has been remade multiple times by different filmmakers with more diverse perspectives on the portrayal of the magnificent Gorilla aka King Kong. The movie follows Carl Denham and his crew as they come across a giant ape on Skull Island and imprison it in order to bring it to New York. They run into trouble when the giant ape is released into the city.

A fantastic and exciting film on the whole, King Kong 's plot is epic, with more action and new astounding creatures. This remake contains more action than the original, and obviously maximizes CGI (even though it hasn't aged entirely well). While definitely not director Peter Jackson 's best work (an honor that remains with the Lord of the Rings trilogy), it's a decent enough modern adaptation of the classic story.

4 'Tarzan' (1999)

Directed by kevin lima, chris buck.

A beloved Disney classic, Tarzan is an animated film that needs no introduction. The movie tells the tale of the titular protagonist (voiced by Tony Goldwyn ), a human orphan left in the jungle who is adopted by his gorilla family. He struggles with his identity and place in the world growing up, which becomes even more prominent with the arrival of a group of humans – including the vibrant Jane Porter ( Minnie Driver ).

The rewatchable animated Disney film has everything, from groundbreaking animation to catchy musical numbers to an inspiring heartfelt story. Its story about identity and the meaning of family is wonderfully told against the backdrop of a gorgeous (and sometimes unforgiving) jungle. While some of its aspects haven't aged well, the classic is still worth revisiting with family members today.

3 'The Jungle Book' (1967)

The Jungle Book is an evergreen classic that has been one of the most widely read and watched movies in the history of cinema. The adventures of Mowgli, the hunger of the iconic animated villain Shere Khan, and a pack of wild animals come together to create this masterpiece of a story.

Heartwarming soundtracks and lessons about bravery, friendship, and life, in general, are some of the inspiring takeaways from The Jungle Book . With various animated and live-action iterations, this movie has been made and remade a lot of times over the years, but still manages to maintain the old-school charm of a Disney movie. The 1967 version is undoubtedly still the best, with as much heart and humor as it did when it first premiered.

2 'Jurassic Park' Movies (1993 - 2001)

Spanning seven thrilling movies over almost two decades, the Jurassic Park franchise has nothing but the best in store. A first-of-its-kind plot that explored the comeback of dinosaurs to disrupt the modern world was loved by all and immediately became a huge part of cinematic history.

Along with rampaging monsters and scientific experiments gone wrong, the movies have continuously featured a strong star cast that managed to attract audiences from across the world. The most recent movie, Jurassic Park: Dominion , seemed to be the end of the franchise, which has seen a steady decline in quality. That said, those looking for a nail-biting jungle survival movie may want to check out the first three entries in this award-winning film series.

Jurassic Park

1 'predator' (1987), directed by john mctiernan.

Predator was part of Arnold Schwarzenegger 's string of 1980s hits : half testosterone-drenched shootout movie, half sci-fi horror that dismantles (limb by limb) the action genre and the men who feature in them, who find all their guns and unified body mass completely pointless against a superior warrior who hunts humans for sport.

Predator became an instant action classic thanks to the dreaded creature, one-liners, sweltering jungle setting , and John McTiernan 's directorial style. It's the ultimate jungle movie that birthed a legendary franchise that's still going strong today, with Prey marking a great move forward for the classic film series.

In the pantheon of Disney movies based on Disney theme park rides, "Jungle Cruise" is pretty good—leagues better than dreck like "Haunted Mansion," though not quite as satisfying as the original "Pirates of the Caribbean."

The most pleasant surprise is that director Jaume Collet-Serra (" The Shallows ") and a credited team of five, count 'em, writers have largely jettisoned the ride's mid-century American colonial snarkiness and casual racism (a tradition  only recently eliminated ). Setting the revamp squarely in the wheelhouse of blockbuster franchise-starters like " Raiders of the Lost Ark ," " Romancing the Stone " and "The Mummy," and pushing the fantastical elements to the point where the story barely seems to be taking place in our universe, it's a knowingly goofy romp, anchored to the banter between its leads, an English feminist and adventurer played by Emily Blunt and a riverboat captain/adventurer played by  Dwayne Johnson .

Notably, however, even though the stars' costumes (and a waterfall sequence) evoke the classic "The African Queen"—John Huston's comic romance/action film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn ; worth looking up if you've never watched it—the sexual chemistry between the two is nonexistent, save for a few fleeting moments, like when Frank picks up the heroine‘s hand-cranked silent film camera and captures affectionate images of her. At times the leads seem more like a brother and sister needling each other than a will they/won’t they bantering couple. Lack of sexual heat is often (strangely) a bug, or perhaps a feature, in films starring Johnson, the four-quadrant blockbuster king (though not on Johnson’s HBO drama "Ballers"). Blunt keeps putting out more than enough flinty looks of interest to sell a romance, but her leading man rarely reflects it back at her. Fortunately, the film's tight construction and prolific action scenes carry it, and Blunt and Johnson do the irresistible force/immovable object dynamic well enough, swapping energies as the story demands.

Blunt's character, Lily Houghton, is a well-pedigreed adventurer who gathers up maps belonging to her legendary father and travels to the Amazon circa 1916 to find the Tears of the Moon, petals from a "Tree of Life"-type of fauna that can heal all infirmities. She and her snooty, pampered brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall) hire Frank "Skipper" Wolff (Johnson) to bring them to their destination. The only notable concession to the original theme park ride comes here: Wolff's day job is taking tourists upriver and making cheesy jokes in the spirit of "hosts" on Disney Jungle Cruise rides of yore. On the mission, Johnson immediately settles into a cranky but funny old sourpuss vibe, a la John Wayne or Harrison Ford , and inhabits it amiably enough, even though buoyant, almost childlike optimism comes more naturally to him than world-weary gruffness.

The supporting cast is stacked with overqualified character players. Paul Giamatti plays a gold-toothed, sunburned, cartoonishly “Italian” harbor master who delights at keeping Frank in debt. Edgar Ramirez is creepy and scary as a conquistador whose curse from centuries ago has trapped him in the jungle.  Jesse Plemons plays the main baddie, Prince Joachim, who wants to filch the power of the petals for the Kaiser back in Germany (he's Belloq to the stars' Indy and Marion, trying to swipe the Ark). Unsurprisingly, given his track record, Plemons steals the film right out from under its leads.

Collet-Serra keeps the action moving along, pursuing a more classical style than is commonplace in recent live-action Disney product (by which I mean, the blocking and editing have a bit of elegance, and you always know where characters are in relation to each other). The editing errs on the side of briskness to such an extent that affecting, beautiful, or spectacular images never get to linger long enough to become iconic. The CGI is dicey, particularly on the larger jungle animals—was the production rushed, or were the artists just overworked?—and there are moments when everything seems so rubbery/plasticky that you seem to be watching the first film that was actually shot on location at Disney World.

But the staging and execution of the chases and fights compensates. Derivative of films that were themselves highly derivative, "Jungle Cruise" has the look and feel of a paycheck gig for all involved, but everyone seems to be having a great time, including the filmmakers.

In theaters and on Disney+ for a premium charge starting Friday, July 30th.

10 movies to watch if you loved uncharted.

Uncharted accentuates the puzzling solving and treasure hunting stories. These core features are in films like Tomb Raider and National Treasure.

Film adaptations of video games are not unusual, with the latest being Sony's  Uncharted .  Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg star as Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan (or Sully), working together to find Magellan's lost treasure. This treasure hunt film has all the action and fun in the world, enough to overcome the underwhelming story.

Uncharted  brings the best of the treasure hunt, from entertaining action to adventurous heists. Nothing is more fun than solving puzzles and searching for lost gems, and many other action-adventure films radiate similar aspects of  Uncharted . Some even serve as an influence of the recently released movie.

Tomb Raider (2018)

Rent on appletv, amazon, google play, youtube, vudu, & redbox.

The action-adventure film that oozes the energy and ambiance of  Uncharted  is  Tomb Raider . Starring Alicia Vikander,  Tomb Raider  follows Lara Croft, who goes on a mission to find her lost father.

Like  Uncharted ,  Tomb Raider  is also a film adaptation of a video game franchise, a common trend with video games. Lara shares Nathan's distinct qualities, such as solving puzzles, being ambitious adventurers, and knowing how to kick butt.  Tomb Raider  is the perfect film that delivers the same aura as  Uncharted  and caters well to those who love video games that turn into action-packed movies .

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003)

Stream on disney+.

A common trope of treasure quests includes finding long-lost ships, which serves as a plot device in  Uncharted . Of course,  Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl   takes things up a notch with pirates and the search for the dead man's chest.

The Curse of the Black Pearl  emulates many distinct features of  Uncharted  with the incredible fight sequences and fun voyage. This fantasy adventure film delivers on humor and spectacle, making itself a fun ride for viewers to watch. Furthermore, many people cannot get enough of the charisma of Captain Jack Sparrow, one of Johnny Depp's best roles .

Sahara (2005)

Stream on fubotv & paramount+.

Looking for lost ships is a common theme in many films, including 2005's  Sahara, s tarring Matthew McConaughey and Penélope Cruz. The movie follows two adventurers who seek to find the "Ship of Death," with possibilities of finding hidden treasure. A scientist joins them, warning of a deadly plague that they must stop from spreading.

RELATED: 10 Treasure Hunting Movies To Watch Before Uncharted

Sahara  echoes the typical characteristics of the entertaining voyages in  Uncharted , from the amusing exploit to the lively dynamic between the trio. This treasure hunt film is not perfect, but the lackluster plot does not minimize the immense entertainment value.

The Mummy (1999)

Stream on hbo max.

Some of the best features of perilous journeys involve ancient and rich cultures and scary entities. The 1999 film  The Mummy  does just that, encountering mummies, pyramids, and treasures of gold. However, a librarian, her brother, and an American mercenary confront a reincarnated Egyptian priest who seeks to resurrect his long-lost lover.

Uncharted 's Nathan radiates the charm and exploration-loving spirit of  The Mummy 's Rick O'Connell. Furthermore,  The Mummy  delivers action-packed sequences, incredible visual effects, and humor. Without a doubt,  The Mummy  is an enjoyable and thrilling cinematic experience in which people can overlook the flawed story.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)

Moviegoers love the entertainment value of treasure hunt films, but many will proclaim Steven Spielberg's  Raiders of the Lost Ark   as the best of them all. In this film, American archaeologist Indiana Jones must venture to find a religious relic before the Nazis get their hands on it for world domination.

This action-adventure is a roller coaster escapist, enhanced by the sublime treasure hunt story and magnetic appeal of Indiana Jones, who Nathan emulates a similar vivacity. Of course,  Raiders of the Lost Ark  changed the scope of adventure films that many people are familiar with today, even being the influence of the  Uncharted  video games and subsequent film. Spielberg's movie even incorporates the archeology aspects flawlessly that enhance the treasure hunt's authenticity.

‘I learn a lot every single time I work’ … actor and director Bryce Dallas Howard

Bryce Dallas Howard: ‘I can’t be trusted around famous people’

The actor on tricking her tear ducts, being entertained as a child by Tom Cruise and legging it from dinosaurs while wearing stilettos

Hi Bryce! If two generations makes an acting family, does three make an acting dynasty? [Her father is director Ron Howard, both of whose parents were actors.] JohnHunt I think a dynasty is five generations or more, so we’re not even close. We’ve got a way to go. We’ve got three generations, so maybe I’ll be around for it when the Howards cross that threshold.

When you’re directing something that’s part of a larger collection, such as The Mandalorian , how do you find the balance between maintaining the tone and making something that reflects your own artistic vision? porcospino Something like The Mandalorian is such an important story and piece of intellectual property. It’s dramaturgically essential to understand the essence of the creator and what inspired them to create that in the first place, so whatever I’m building on is an extension of their original vision. In the case of Star Wars, it’s George Lucas, but I would feel that way no matter what the material is. It’s very important to have a deep, nuanced, compassionate and objective view when you take the baton.

Howard as Elly and Sam Rockwell as Aidan in Argylle

What was it like making Argylle with such a stellar cast? Do you ever get star struck? TurangaLeela2 It’s a completely bananas movie, and that’s what the experience was like making it with this dazzling cast, Versace gowns and doing the whirlybird with Sam Rockwell, Sam [Samuel L] Jackson and Dua Lipa. I get starstruck extremely easily and it’s embarrassing. I blush, I stutter, I say weird things. I get like too excited. I act like a fangirl and it takes a while for me to settle down. I can’t be trusted around famous people is the takeaway.

How did you learn that crying on command thing you demonstrated on the Conan talkshow? MrChevett I taught myself. I heard that there was an acting technique based on the physiology of the human body and triggering certain physiological cues that would then cause you to laugh, blush, yawn, cry. I read the death scene of Romeo and Juliet every single night before bed, starting when I was 14 years old, and I would yawn because, when you yawn, your eyes get watery. I would yawn while saying the text, and got to a point where I could yawn without having the yawn response and could just talk and trigger my soft palate, which would trigger my tear ducts, which would cause tears. I’m doing it right now. I’m yawning inside but I’ve learned how to talk while yawning and trigger my soft palate and tear ducts. See. Now there’s a little tear that’s coming down.

Your performance in Black Mirror was the best I’ve ever seen an actor playing opposite a smartphone! littleisok Thank you. That episode was just so chilling for me personally because I had just joined social media two weeks prior. I was a late adopter, so when we filmed that in 2016 I was in the throes of thinking: “What have I done to my life?” Then I read that script and thought: “Wow, this is going to be very therapeutic.”

You were impressive as Elton John’s mother, Sheila, in Rocketman . How did you manage the accent? Hooplehead1967 I had a wonderful dialect coach who helped me because Sheila is from Pinner [in north-west London] but she’s trying to seem like she’s very posh, so it’s more of a posh dialect than you’d probably find typically in Pinner. I’m glad that I’m not banned from England now! Do I think it’s easier for British actors to do American accents than the other way around? It’s probably because – and I’m about to make some terrible generalisation here – British actors are incredibly well trained, and there’s such an exposure to American media.

Do I have any favourite British slang? I know I have to be careful when asking for my fanny pack. It’s bumbag. And bangs and fringe. I used to always have bangs and I would say: “I’m just blow drying my bangs. Hold on one second. I mean, fringe …”

Bryce Dallas Howard as Sheila in Rocketman

Do you think your acting has improved because of your work as a director? Have you become a better director because of your acting experience? Or does it go hand-in-hand? BMater I learn a lot every time I work as either a director or an actor. My dad says that one of the things he misses most about being an actor is getting to watch other directors work because everyone does it a little bit differently. It’s what I love most about acting as well. With directing, I love working with really talented actors and finding ways to make them feel exceptionally empowered to do their best work. Both scenarios are fun and enlightening as it pertains to the other role.

Do you have any interest in performing on Broadway again? jdsasser Yes. Now that my kids are getting older, that’s definitely something that I’ve been thinking about.

If you had to replace the Dallas in your name for another city, which would you pick? Ellis1997 There are some good ones. My niece is named Aspen, which is good. I grew up in Connecticut where there’s a place called Mystic, so Mystic Connecticut could be fun. Or Bryce Hollywood Howard!

What was Tom Cruise like as a babysitter? TopTramp He wasn’t my babysitter. He just was in a movie [1992’s Far and Away] directed by my dad. My siblings and I were quite young at the time, so he was just a big kid who was really fun and would entertain us with backflips and feed us whatever we asked for. He was always really cool.

Bryce Dallas Howard with Chris Pratt in 2015’s Jurassic World

Are high heels really the best shoes to wear when running away from a T rex [in Jurassic World]? dude1981 Actually, I had the choice to take off my shoes. In the scene, I push up my sleeves and there was going to potentially be a bit where I threw off my high heels, but just being out there in the jungle terrain, I thought: “I’ll do better in heels.”

Have you ever experienced any ginger-ism in your career or personal life? TopTramp That’s the first time I’ve ever heard that term! Apparently, we’re going extinct, and I’ve contributed to it. Neither of my children are redheads. I went to the Louvre over my birthday weekend in March, and walked around and almost every single painting was of a redhead. So we’ve ruled long enough!
