Guided Kayak Tours

A guided kayak tour is the perfect choice for a few hours of fun and excitement.  These tours make great outings and still leave plenty of time for other activities.  Whether you seek a stimulating activity, a chance to get outdoors or want to take your first step into the exciting world of kayaking, these half-day tours are a wonderful option.  Choose from one of the many half-day, guided kayak tours with Up The Creek; we offer a wide and varied selection so that you can return many times and never see the same thing twice. With the largest fleet and most professional guide staff in the area, we can safely accommodate children, beginners and groups as large as 40-paddlers on some of our guided kayak tours.

It is important to note that kayaking in the tidewater area is based strictly on tides and weather. Because of unfavorable tides or weather, some tours may not be possible on the day you wish to paddle. Therefore, the first step is picking the day you would like to go paddling and then we will check the tides for that day and let you know which tours are possible. Once you’ve picked a day and and we’ve decided on the tour location that will work on that day, all you have to do is book your adventure. Super Simple . You just need to know the When and How Many and we’ll do the rest for you .

Though some trips can be longer, our guided kayak tours generally consist of 2 – 2.5 hours of paddling in order to maximize fun while still staying comfortable.  Most of our tours are designed so we paddle with the current — providing for a relaxing pace.  Weather and wind can dramatically affect paddling conditions, and safety is our number one priority.  Trips will run unless high winds, lightning or other conditions arise that force cancellation.  All trips include:

• Kayak, paddle and personal flotation device (PFD).
• A pre-launch kayak instruction covering kayak fundamentals and paddle strokes.
• Water and yummy snacks.
• An experienced kayak guide leading the trip.  Guides are trained to assist customers in capsizes or other emergencies, and provide a wealth of knowledge about the area and environment.
• All of our Lead Guides have been through ACA (American Canoe Association) Certifications, Skills Checks and Courses. For your safety the outfitter you choose should employ trained professional paddlers.

All tours meet at the kayak trip launch site or location unless otherwise noted.

When & How Many? Decide when you want to go kayaking. How many people might be in your group, including children?

Where would you like to paddle, i.e. which Kayak Tour? Give us a call or e-mail us after deciding when and how many, and we will chat with you about your level of experience, if any.  We will then match you to the right kayak tour for you or your group.

Once the Date, Time, Location and Number of people have been decided, you can put down a credit card deposit to hold you reservation.  Then let the fun begin!

• All of our Guided Kayak Tours are between 2 and 3.5-hours on the water. Please plan on spending an additional hour for pre-trip instruction, launching and wrap-up.

Types of kayaks we use

On our guided tours we use sea (touring) kayaks – the kind with a sit-in cockpit (as opposed to sit-on-tops) but we don’t use spray skirts. We’ve found that these are the most comfortable and easily maneuverable for the beginner. For rentals we have recreational kayaks which are a bit more stable and shorter, perfect for exploring the salt marsh creek. We have sit-ins and sit-on tops for rentals. There are one and two person kayaks in our fleet.

Bringing a group for rentals? Kayak Amelia does not take reservations for rentals but if you are bringing a group over 10 paddlers, call our office 904-251-0016 and we can work with you to make sure there are boats available when you arrive. We want to make sure your group has fun and stays safe on the water. The saltmarsh creek you will be paddling is protected but this is a nature experience and a little local knowledge and planning can mean the difference between an outdoor adventure and visit to the emergency room!  You can download a  waiver .

Salt marsh wildlife / What will I see?

The salt marsh ecosystem is one of the most diverse in the world. It is the nursery for most of the fish found in the ocean. Northeast Florida is part of the East Coast flyway for migrating birds of many species. We frequently see pelicans, egrets, herons, wood storks, terns, and various shore birds as well as other migrating birds. In the water we may see dolphins, manatees, otters, rays, and other fish.

Gift cards available Gift cards purchased by calling the office, can be used for any tour, rental or any product sold in our Gift Shop. Gift card will be mailed to you. Gift cards purchased online from our reservation software-FareHarbor-can only be used for guided tours.  

Weather…… happens

Our utmost concern is the safety of our paddlers. Lightning and dangerous winds will cancel a guided tour or force us off the water if a trip is underway. A little rain won’t cancel a trip, but a little lightning will. If a guided tour must be canceled because of bad weather you will not be charged. With rentals, we can tell you the forecast but, once you leave, there are no refunds for bad weather.

Is it customary to tip the guides

If this means you want to dunk us in celebration of a successful voyage, NO! Gratuities, on the other hand, while not necessary are always appreciated. 15-20% is customary.
