BedBox has been assessed and approved by many major international airlines. Happy and well rested children is important to them as well. However, we cannot guarantee all airlines will approve its use, and final decision will always rest with the cabin crew. For more information, please see our approved airlines list (visible throughout our website), read this article , or contact us for advice.

No, we believe using the bed/leg-rest feature of the BedBox properly does quite the opposite. On a long flight, either we like it or not, children will naturally become tired and will eventually need to rest or sleep. Traditionally, this has been solved by letting children sleep curled up in their seat or across a seat row like this (or even on the floor!). Although sleeping across a seat row is widely accepted and usually not a problem, it is not optimum in case of unexpected turbulence. Using the bed/leg rest feature of the BedBox will better allow using the aircraft seat belt, while still having a super comfortable place to sleep or rest.

In addition, the BedBox has already passed safety assessments by many major airlines.

Yes, it is intended to be used during the cruise portion of the flight only, and must be stowed away during taxi, take-off, landing or turbulence.

BedBox should be used on window seats on single aisle aircrafts. If flying on wide-body aircrafts with twin aisle, it should preferably be used on either window seats, or on the middle seats, if sitting in the middle row, between the aisles.

Personal comfort devices and carry-on suitcases such as BedBox and RideBox are normally not subject to a specific approval from the aviation authorities. They are brought on board for personal comfort and convenience and can be used at the discretion of the crew, and within their limitations.

For BedBox, as with most other personal items brought on board, the user is responsible for ensuring proper use according to the user instructions.

Yes, BedBox and RideBox are perfect travel companions, and can in many cases be used as a comfortable leg rest on trains and ferries.

No, just like most baby bassinets that you will find on some limited number of aircrafts, it shall not be used during turbulence. However, to better secure towards unexpected turbulence, we recommend always using the seat belt in combination with the use of BedBox, and use the strap to secure the BedBox in place.

Some airlines have better seat pitch than others. Seat pitch is usually between 82-90 cm. BedBox can be used as a comfortable leg rest for children up to 120-130cm. Children up to 100-110 cm might also be able to curl up and lay down comfortably on their side.

Yes, the mattress does not take up much volume, so there is plenty of space for other favorite items as well. The total capacity of the BedBox is 20 liters.

We recommend a position with the feet towards the seat in front. This will better allow using the seatbelt in combination with bed/leg-rest feature of the BedBox. Even though this is not a strict requirement, it is always recommended and a good practice to use the seatbelt whenever seated.

This has been tested on many different economy seats with a normal recline angle. Since the platform height of the BedBox is so low, and close to the rotation/hinge point of the backrest of the seat in front, this will usually not be a problem.

No, the wheels are not lockable. To secure the BedBox in place, we recommend using the shoulder/pulling strap around the base rail under your child's seat.

If BedBox is properly secured to the aircraft seat with the help of the strap, it is possible to use it on bulkhead seats. However, BedBox is primarily designed to be used between two seat rows, as this will give better support and stability.

Absolutely. BedBox has already gone through thorough assessments (safety & suitability) by many major international airlines that sees the benefits can BedBox can offer their family travelers. Doing an internal assessment is something that can be very helpful for your passengers and crew. We would be happy to provide you more in-depth information, samples for your review, and assistance if needed. Please contact us for more information.

BedBox™

So cute!!! Worked great for my 2 year old.

We haven’t used it but it seams well made and the quality is great

We love this!! Toddler slept for the whole flight.

With airports getting busier and busier this product was the perfect way to get my little through security and to gates without having to slow down and without the hassle of debating a toddler in an already stressful situation. Her in-cabin items fit right into the suitcase too so I had easy access throughout the flight. Thank you Stokke!

Stokke JetKids BedBox review: our verdict on the premium ride-on suitcase

A ride-on kids' suitcase that transforms into an in-flight bed? The Stokke JetKids BedBox sounds like the stuff of dreams for family travellers. But is it a must-buy for your next holiday? MNHQ editor and mum of two, Rachel, puts it to the test.

By Rachel Erdos | Last updated Apr 24, 2024

Toddler rides on a JetKids BedBox at an airport

Overall star rating: 3/5

Price on writing: £169 | Buy now from John Lewis

What we like

Really smooth and sturdy ride-on case

Stylish Scandi design

Easy-to-use in-flight seat extender

Can be paired with an adorable matching rucksack

Great buy if you’re a frequent long-haul flyer

What we don't like

BedBox feature isn't suitable for use on some airlines

Doesn't fit under all airline seats so you might need to store in the overhead compartment for take off and landing

Suitable for kids 3-7, although for older kids, the case is more of a leg rest than a bed

Suitcase space is limited if travelling with the mattress

Only permitted on window or middle seats

Our verdict

The Stokke JetKids BedBox is both a ride-on suitcase and an in-flight bed - a genius multi-use travel accessory for frequent family travellers . Bigger than a Trunki and with front swivel wheels, this sturdy piece of kit glides smoothly through airport terminals and is a fun way to get kids from A to B, particularly if you’ve dropped your pram off at check-in.

I found the BedBox simple to set up when onboard and it provided a comfy space for my toddler to kick back (and nap!) in during a recent four-hour flight. And it meant that we could slip books, magazines, a tablet , headphones and snacks into the case to take onboard with us. It’s a brilliant design (dreamt up by an airline engineer and parent of three) and it’s a game-changer for long-haul economy flights.

However, the BedBox functionality isn’t approved for use on some airlines (including British Airways, although travellers report that they’ve used it without issue) and the dimensions (46 x 20 x 36cm) fall outside most budget airline hand luggage policies so you may have to pay extra to take it onboard. It didn’t fit under the seat in front of us when testing so we had to put it in the overhead compartment for take-off and landing, which felt a little cumbersome.

Is it a travel essential? No. But the JetKids BedBox is a great investment if you’re planning to fly long-haul with the kids and haven’t got the budget for business class seats. And thanks to its robust and larger-than-average ride-on design, it’ll see you through toddlerhood to around age seven, so it could be a smart buy for junior jetsetters.

How we tested

I took the JetKids BedBox on an easyJet flight from London to Madeira with my three-year-old daughter. It’s the first time I’ve flown solo with a toddler and the first time we’ve been away without a pram so it felt like a good opportunity to put the case through its paces. We lugged the case in and out of taxis in Funchal and into an Uber on our return. The flight was delayed on the way back and the suitcase really came into its own at the airport, providing a footrest for both of us as we faced a three-hour delay and a late-night arrival.

What’s the JetKids BedBox like to ride on?

The JetKids case offers a really smooth ride. Made from thick ABS plastic, it feels strong and sturdy, and the front swivel wheels make it super easy to manoeuvre and to turn - very handy for those long and winding passport control queues. The quality of the build is hands down my favourite feature of this suitcase. It's just as easy to pull my six-year-old son along on it as my three-year-old daughter and both feel safe and secure in transit. I’ve travelled with a Trunki before but it always felt as though the kids could topple over at any moment and I found it tricky to turn or change direction when pulling it along. The JetKids case is also 5cm taller than the Trunki, which makes for a more comfortable seating position. There’s a handy strap to hold onto for added peace of mind.

It’s easy for kids to pull along too, even when full - particularly useful when you’ve got your hands full or need to deal with airport admin. And far easier for a toddler to pull than a traditional carry-on suitcase. My daughter enjoyed taking the reins but definitely preferred being escorted.

How does the jetkids bedbox transform into an in-flight bed.

The suitcase slots between your child’s seat and the seat in front and the BedBox mechanism works when you lift the lid and turn it upside down allowing you to slide out a seat extender to close the gap between seats and provide a flat surface on which to stretch out on. You need to push the sides of the lid and lift it at the same time which can take a bit of getting used to - it’s well worth practising before you board.

The foam mattress provides a comfy base on the seat and runs up to each arm rest but it’s better suited to younger kids that are likely to lie flat than older kids using the case as more of a foot rest. The mattress takes up quite a bit of space (see below) so it’s not essential to travel with it.

Although it’s a simple process, I found it a little tricky to set up and dismantle on our flight as we were sitting next to another passenger who had to make space for us to get it in and out of the overhead compartment when taking off and landing and then again when setting things up next at my daughter’s seat. It didn’t fit under the seat on our easyJet flight but there are plenty of other airlines where it does, including Virgin Atlantic and Etihad Airways. This would definitely make things easier. The in-flight bed feature would work especially well in a bulkhead seat.

Stokke JetKids BedBox colour options

How easy is the JetKids BedBox to carry?

While it’s a dream to pull along, it feels pretty bulky to pick up. There isn’t a top handle to lift it up with - only the short safety strap which means the weight distribution is uneven. And the shoulder strap is fiddly to attach and a bit cumbersome to carry. The case could benefit from some Trunki-style top straps, although this would totally spoil the aesthetic and may interfere with the BedBox mechanism.

What can you fit inside the JetKids BedBox?

The case has a capacity of 23 litres but the foam mattress takes up quite a bit of internal space. We travelled with the mattress and found that we still had space for an iPad, a couple of books, some headphones, a magazine, a pencil case, a doll and a soft toy. There’s also a handy compartment in the lid where we hid a few snacks. If you left the mattress at home you could squeeze lots more in. The top opening makes it easy to see and grab items compared to a flat suitcase that you have to fan out to access.

Which airlines have approved the JetKids BedBox sleeping feature?

There are 50+ airlines that have officially approved the use of the BedBox functionality, including major national carriers like American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Etihad and KLM. You can also use the seat extender on budget airlines including easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air. However, you’ll need to bear in mind that the hand luggage restrictions are pretty tight on these airlines and it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to slot it under the seat in front of you. As mentioned, the case is better suited for long-haul travel on more premium airlines that tend to have generous hand luggage policies and space to slot the case under the seat in front of you. Definitely check the airline policies and measurements before booking a ticket or buying the product!

Is the JetKids BedBox banned on British Airways flights?

British Airways doesn’t have an official policy on the BedBox and while many travellers report that they’ve been able to take the case onboard a BA flight and use the seat extender as intended, there’s a danger that you might get caught out mid-flight. You can still use it as a ride-on case and travel with it as hand luggage but there’s no official guidance as to whether you can use the BedBox component. This applies to other large airlines including Emirates, Air France and Qatar. And bear in mind that you can only set it up on a window or a middle seat rather than an aisle seat.

JetKids by Stokke BedBox: Long-Term Review of Amazing Kids’ Luggage

Traveling with kids can be stressful, but it can also be a lot of fun.

New parents will quickly realize that little ones travel with a lot of gear, and it will often make sense for kids to have their own carry-on bags. My family is a big fan of Away and Monos bags, but there is 1 bag in our lineup that never gets left behind, and that’s the JetKids by Stokke BedBox .

We bought the BedBox for our daughter 5 years ago. Now that she has outgrown it, it has become a favorite of our 3-year-old son.

Originally, we were drawn to the BedBox because it can (almost) create a bed out of an economy seat, which is great for our kids on long-haul flights. But even when we travel in business class, we bring it along for its ride-on capability and impressive storage capacity.

With 5+ years and thousands of miles of real-life testing, I have plenty to say about this trooper of a roller bag. If you’re considering buying a BedBox for your little one, read on for my full review.

JetKids BedBox roller bag being pulled

JetKids was originally founded by 2 parents who were looking for a better way for their young child to sleep on a plane — a common pain point for many traveling families.

After doing plenty of research, and realizing that many children ended up sleeping on the floor (which is not only cold but dangerous), the company created the first prototype for the BedBox, which extended the surface area of an airplane seat so little ones could sleep more comfortably and safely.

Eventually, after successfully launching, JetKids was acquired by Stokke, a Norwegian children’s furniture and accessories manufacturer.

The product has been so successful and received so many great reviews that it has even been named a Best Invention by Time Magazine .

Kids on jetbridge with JetKids BedBox

Luggage takes a beating. Anything that my kids touch takes a beating. So needless to say, our JetKids by Stokke BedBox has been used and abused over the 5+ years we have been traveling the world with it.

If I’m being honest, this little roller bag is holding up better than most bags we have purchased in recent years.

The BedBox has a solid plastic build with 4 wheels, 2 of which have a 360-degree swivel function. Our bag has been packed, pulled, jammed, and ridden extensively and still performs as well as it did on day 1… despite a few scratches.

The wheels roll (surprisingly) smoothly regardless of how much is packed inside or who is riding the bag through the airport and hotel lobbies.

JetKids Travel Gear for Kids

Since the original BedBox became a success, JetKids has expanded its travel-gear lineup. Here are some other kid-friendly options for travel gear.

The original BedBox continues to be the star of the show for JetKids. The “world’s only ride-on, carry-on, and sleep-on suitcase” has become a favorite of parents who want to (attempt to) turn an economy seat into a first class seat for their child.

This carry-on bag is great for packing with toys and books, can be turned into a bed for small children, and can be easily stored under most airplane seats for easy access.

The easy-to-open top is sturdy enough to be hung from luggage carts or have a ride on through the airport.

The JetKids by Stokke BedBox is currently available in multiple fun colors, including Pink Lemonade, Blue Sky, Full Moon, Green Aurora, Lunar Eclipse, and Golden Olive.

Unfortunately, when we bought ours, there weren’t as many (or any) colors to choose from, just a change in straps and stickers. We have the classic Full Moon and blue strap combination.

The bed feature of the BedBox is recommended for kids ages 2 and up, but it can be used as a carry-on for travelers of any age! As a ride-on, JetKids advises an age range of 3 to 7 years and up to 77 pounds.

The latest addition to the JetKids lineup is the CloudSleeper, an inflatable travel bed for kids ages 3 and up.

While this bed is too big for a plane, it is perfect for sleepovers, camping, and hotel stays.

The integrated pump makes it easy to inflate and it folds down and fits inside its own packing cube, which makes transportation nice and easy.

Plus, it can fit inside of a BedBox, so no need to stress about pullout sofas at your next hotel.

If you are looking for a really cute (and functional) backpack for your child, the Crew Backpack is an adorable option.

Designed to grow with your little one, the bag has a hidden zipper that opens up an extra 2 liters of storage. So depending on how big your kid is, this bag will fit them comfortably and they won’t end up overpacking it.

Plus, with a little seat pad and the option to connect it to a BedBox, it is fun and functional.

The JetKids by Stokke Crew BackPack is currently available in some great colors, including Pink Lemonade, Blue Sky, Full Moon, and Green Aurora.

If you are like me and now want everything that JetKids has to offer, be sure to check out a discounted bundle of both the BedBox and the Crew Backpack.

JetKids by Stokke BedBox Real-life Testing

Boy sitting on JetKids BedBox

For the past 5 years, my family and I have been conducting some real-life testing of the JetKids by Stokke BedBox. There have been some minor updates to the models from when we purchased ours compared to what is for sale today, but it is essentially the same bag.

The updates are internally labeled as V1, V2, or V3. We have a V1. The biggest changes consumers will notice are the color options and the mattress design.

The majority of times, we use the BedBox as a standard carry-on bag that can be pulled easily by the kids, or ridden on while we pull it through the airport. On trips where we are flying business class and have no use for the bed feature, we leave the mattress at home to create more storage space.

The great thing about this bag is that you can pack it to the gills and it will not lose its stability — which can sometimes be the case with normal carry-on roller bags.

When it’s time to use it as a bed, the bag can easily fit and slide out from underneath an economy seat , and then pop up to provide support for our kid’s legs.

In our years of usage, mostly flying major U.S. carriers, we have never had an issue with an airline saying that the BedBox was not allowed. In fact, most crew members we have talked to think it’s awesome (but you may run into issues, depending on the airline).

That being said, there are some airlines that officially approve the BedBox (Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific even sell it!), so be sure to check the updated BedBox-friendly airline list . And, as always, make sure the BedBox does not block any aisle exit in case of an emergency.

JetKids by Stokke BedBox positioning on the plane

Hot Tip: Using the BedBox in a window seat will provide your child with some extra support and not block any exits.

JetKids BedBox bag contents

The JetKids by Stokke BedBox comes with the suitcase, adjustable straps, 2 sheets of travel-themed stickers, and a rolled-up mattress.

Setting up the BedBox in the bed/leg-rest function is pretty straightforward.

JetKids BedBox bag at airplane seat

Once the plane is in the air and it is safe to move around, simply follow these steps:

  • Place the suitcase in front of the child’s seat
  • Secure the suitcase with the attached strap (this is optional; we have never done this)
  • Remove the lid
  • Flip the lid over
  • Place the lid back on the suitcase at your desired height level (which will depend on your seat height)
  • Slide-out the extension plate
  • Place the mattress on top of the seat and suitcase
  • Relax and enjoy!

Although the mattress does provide some extra padding, we have found that it doesn’t justify the amount of space it takes up in the bag . Plus, it tends to slide around over the course of an overnight flight.

Lately, we have been flying without the mattress. And since our son only rests his legs on the suitcase (his body mostly stays on the seat), he has been comfortable with a mix of blankets and pillows instead.

When we first bought the JetKids by Stokke BedBox, we bought it for its bed-like capability. However, after using it for so many years, one of our favorite features is the storage capacity.

JetKids BedBox Pink Lemonade storage

There is no special design with secret compartments. When opened, it is just a big rolling storage bin, which is kind of perfect for a kid to throw all of their toys and snacks in.

The full specs of the BedBox are:

  • Dimensions : 18 x 8 x 14 inches (46 x 20 x 36 centimeters)
  • Weight : 7 pounds (3.3 kilograms)
  • Volume : 6 gallons (23 liters)
  • Max Load : 77 pounds (35 kilograms)

The hardshell exterior and 4 wheels make this roller bag feel like a tank, especially when loaded up with books and a toddler on top.

As I mentioned before, lately we have been traveling without the mattress to get more storage space.

The entire BedBox (including the wheels) is made out of ABS plastic (similar to LEGO), the straps are nylon, and the mattress is a thin foam pad.

JetKids BedBox Pink Lemonade side

At first, it doesn’t sound like a very durable product. Especially when you add kids and travel into the mix. But I have been shocked at how much of a beating this bag can take.

We fill it up and roll it around the world with 1 kid (sometimes 2!) on top and it has handled travel like a champ.

We have overpacked it so that the plastic sides are bulging out, only to unpack it later with no signs of stress. The only part that shows its age is the stickers that are peeling off.

The 4 wheels, with very little clearance, may be the more impressive part of this bag.

JetKids BedBox Green Aurora wheels

When we first got the bag, I remember thinking that there was no way the wheels would hold up as much as a normal carry-on bag — especially with a kid riding on top. I am happy to say I was wrong.

The wheels roll as smoothly as the first trip and the bag itself is so easy to pull that our 7-year-old often pulls our 3-year-old around without issue.

When it comes to handles on the BedBox, there are 2 nylon straps.

The first strap is small for your little one to hold on to while riding on the bag, similar to a saddle strap. This strap is connected to the lid, and despite this, it is strong enough to hang from a luggage cart.

JetKids BedBox Pink Lemonade bag handle

The second strap is larger and is what we use to pull the bag. Sometimes, we pull it by hand. Other times, we connect it to our stroller and then push the stroller, pulling the bag behind.

I have seen photos of parents using this larger strap to connect to each end of the bag and carry the entire BedBox as a shoulder bag. I have never done this and can’t imagine it is very comfortable.

Bottom Line: Besides the fact that it turns into a bed, the JetKids by Stokke BedBox is a solid carry-on bag.

Seat to Sleep Travel Nest

Travel and kid gear is a big market, so as you can imagine, there are a few alternatives to the JetKids by Stokke BedBox.

While not all offer the same functionality, depending on your budget and needs, JetKids by Stokke may not be your only option.

Here are some of the top competitors:

  • Flyaway Kids Bed
  • Seat to Sleep Travel Nest
  • Sunany Inflatable Foot Rest Pillow

JetKids BedBox bag overhead storage

Price may be the biggest factor when shopping for a piece of luggage for a child. While certainly not cheap, we have easily gotten our money’s worth from our JetKids by Stokke BedBox. It helps that our firstborn outgrew it just in time for our second child to use it.

The BedBox alone ranges from $199 to $299 depending on what color you want.

If you want to upgrade your purchase by adding a CloudSleeper inflatable mattress, costs start around $299. If you would like to just add the Crew BackPack, bundles start at around $249.

Every JetKids by Stokke BedBox comes with a 2-year global warranty.

Girl using JetKids BedBox on a plane

As long as you use the BedBox as instructed, and it hasn’t been sent as a checked bag, you can make a warranty claim. Just send your info and some photos to JetKids and it will start the warranty process .

Although we have never checked our BedBox, we have used it hard and it still functions as well as it did on day 1 — just with a few extra scratches and souvenir stickers on it!

There is also a 14-day window to return your BedBox as long as you haven’t used it . This is a good opportunity to get a hands-on look with your little one before a trip to see if it will fit your needs.

When used properly, many airlines approve (and some even sell) the JetKids by Stokke BedBox.

While some airlines have no official position on the use of the BedBox, more than 50 officially approve of its use, including:

  • Allegiant Air
  • American Airlines
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Copa Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Etihad Airways
  • GOL Linhas Aereas
  • Japan Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • Spirit Airlines
  • Sun Country Airlines
  • TAP Air Portugal
  • Turkish Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic
  • Virgin Australia

If you are looking for a different airline, be sure to check the BedBox approved airline list . One notable exception for parents flying Emirates is that the BedBox is banned on Emirates flights .

Boy with JetKids BedBox in lounge

Overall, the Jetkids by Stokke BedBox has become an absolute staple in our travel gear lineup. If we are getting on a plane, there is no doubt that the BedBox is coming — even if we are flying in business class.

Just the fun and function factor of my kids being able to ride it through the airport is worth bringing it along. Plus, the storage capacity is pretty impressive, too. The fact that it can turn an economy seat into (almost) a bed for our little travelers is a huge bonus.

Since the included mattress is quite thin, yet takes up a lot of space when not in use, we often leave it behind. While the mattress is nice to have, we can compensate with a folded blanket since the airplane seats are padded and only our kid’s legs are left without extra support.

As long as you use the BedBox in a window seat or in the middle seat of a middle row, you should have no problems or safety concerns with the airline crews (but it is always good to double-check!).

After 5+ years on the road with our BedBox, my family is happy with our purchase — even my son, who got a preowned version!

If you have any questions about the bag, feel free to leave them in the comments.

Hangry By Nature

If you’ve been praying for a miracle to help get you through your next long haul flight featuring kids – your prayers have been answered in the form of this 3-in-1 toddler airplane bed.

All hail the JetKids Bed Box . Bow down and worship this piece of genius because you’ll be kissing with gratitude on your next international flight when your toddler snoozes an unprecedented amount of hours while you attend to your in-flight movie marathon. I promise, this miracle involves alcohol or sleep medication, because.. that would be slightly unethical.

From our own experience of almost circumnavigating the entire globe with it, we’ve decided to rate it as one of the best toddler beds for airplane travel due to its multifunctional abilities, plus it also allows kids to pack and schlep their own junk toys to keep them occupied on flights .

Anyhoos, enough of the chit chat – let’s dive into exactly why the JetKids Bed Box is a top-rated toddler airplane bed that’ll make your next family trip a breeze.

What is the JetKids Bed Box Toddler Airplane Bed?

Simply put, the Bed Box is a ride-on suitcase that ‘transforms’ into a bed for airplane travel. Basically, it converts an economy class seat into a business class recliner for pint-sized travellers.

It’s the ultimate 3-in-1 travel accessory designed for kids to help them sleep on long airplane journeys, store their much-loved toys, and ride from one end of the airport to the other.

It’s hardly fair, right? These tiny humans who haven’t endured a single hardship in their lives (save from that one time you may have forgotten to cut the crust off their toast) seem to received all the royal treatment and aren’t even the least bit grateful.

5 Key Features of the JetKids Bed Box

Off the top of my head, I can think of umpteen uses for the JetKids BedBox . Extra footrest for the couch, a spare seat at dinner for overflow guests, picnic table, seated skateboard, and the list goes on. But, we should probably get to the features this versatile suitcase bed was actually designed for.

It’s the Optimus Prime of Travel Luggage

Alright, look. It doesn’t transform into an alien robot from a distant planet called Cybertron, nor does it flip into any type of vehicle. However, it does remodel itself into a plane bed for kids so that you, as a parent, can get moments of peace while playing Space Invaders or engaging in your in-flight movie marathon. I mean, that’s so much more rewarding than anything else, right?

All you have to do is pop open the top, pull out the rolled up mattress, flip the lid upside down, and flatten the mattress over the seat and suitcase. Voila! You have yourself a suitcase bed *standing ovation from audience*.

It’s a Fun Ride On Suitcase for Toddlers

If you ever get caught running embarrassingly late to your gate in an attempt to make the ‘final call’ announcement (don’t be ashamed – this is 100% us, too) because you were too busy roaming the cosmetics aisles testing out every shade of lipstick in the duty free shop – let the Bed Box be your saviour. Gather your kids, place them on the ride on suitcase, and tell them to hold on tight to the strap as you dart to your gate.

It’s not just handy for transporting kids from one end of the airport to the other, the Bed Box has also kept our two unruly boys occupied during downtime between transits. They would either pretend to walk it around like a puppy or pull each other around in circles until we boarded the plane. Absolute win, I say.

Storage for Toys & Diapers

Even with the mattress stored inside the suitcase, with 23L (36gal) capacity, there’s a fair bit of extra room to squeeze in some of their favourite toys, colouring books and some stationery. On one of our short domestic trips, we took out the mattress and used it solely for diaper storage.

I don’t know about you guys but, I, for one, am sick and tired of the bellboy side duties that I have to take on every single family holiday. I mean, there’s no payment for these services. I’ve never even been given a tip for being chief bag schlepper. However, the Bed Box encouraged our kids to pack and lug their own piece of luggage and guess what? They totally did. It worked!

Perfectly Sized for Carry On

The JetKids Bed Box toddler airplane bed is approved carry-on size coming in at 46 x 20 x 36cm (11 x 8 x 12in), making it the ideal onboard companion. Stow it underneath the seat in front for easy access or in the overhead compartments if it’s not immediately needed. Its universal design and size fits most standard economy seats in aircrafts big or small.

Roll Out Mattress with Side Panels

Yes, these little demanding travellers don’t just get their own seat and personalised service (free toys and accessories on most major airlines) – they even receive their very own portable mattress to take on their travels. Entitled much? Heck, yes.

The thin JetKids mattress fits snugly into the Bed Box when rolled up – simply remove it from the suitcase and roll it onto the seat and inversed lid to create the bed. The plush side flaps can be removed if not needed – the intention behind them is to stop kids from hitting the armrests or, potentially, rolling off their seats.

How to Set Up the Bed Box

Convert the ride on suitcase into a kids airplane bed in 5 ridiculously simple steps with minimal effort.

  • Place the BedBox in front of your child’s allocated seat. Note – it works best when used in window or centre seats.
  • Lift up the lid by pressing the 2 side buttons and remove the mattress.
  • Flip the lid upside down and re-attach it according to seat height.
  • Pull the bed plate out towards the seat in front until there is no more gap.
  • Unfold the mattress and roll it flat onto the seat and over the suitcase.

That’s basically it. You’ve made a kids’ or toddler flight bed in under 2 minutes. Give yourself a pat on the back and start picking out those movies you’ve been wanting to watch since before you had kids. Final step? Coax your child into believing that it’s way past bedtime and that he must go to sleep in an instant.

Pros & Cons of the JetKids Bed Box

Our JetKids Bed Box review has been made possible by trialling and testing the hybrid toddler flight bed and childrens ride on luggage on numerous domestic and international flight – here’s our verdict.

  • It’s a comfy leg rest that toddlers and kids can use while playing games or watching movies.
  • Helps kids sleep by creating a flat surface to lie down or rest their legs
  • It can be used when the seat in front is reclined.
  • It can be used in bulkhead seats.
  • Considered child’s hand luggage, meaning more storage for parents in their own luggage (can I get a “woop, woop”?).
  • Kids can ride and glide on it allowing you to get around quicker
  • Seatbelt can be used lying down or sitting upright
  • Manoeuvres super smoothly thanks to its front swivel wheels
  • Mattress can be hand washed
  • Fits into the overhead compartments or under the seat in front

jetkids-flight-bed-for-toddler

  • Not all airlines approve onboard use of the Bed Box – check the list of approved airlines . However, the team at JetKids are working towards getting the product approved in a greater number of operators, so be sure to monitor the list frequently for updates.
  • Although it’s a brilliant flight bed for toddlers and babies to lie flat and sleep, older and taller kids will have difficulties stretching out their legs due to limited space between the seats
  • Chances are parents will end up lugging the Bed Box around once toddlers have had enough – we all know it takes, literally, 30 seconds for toddlers with the attention span of goldfish to ‘get over’ things. So, essentially, that’s an extra piece of luggage us poor parents have to schlep around.

JetKids Bed Box VS Inflatable Leg Rests

If you’ve been doing your research on toddler airplane beds, there’s no doubt you’ll have come across these JetKids Bed Box alternatives, which also allow your kids to prop up their legs by means of inflation.

The major point of difference? Well, first up, probably the price tag. Secondly, these inflatable leg rests aren’t ride on suitcases, which means that you’ll have to pack the deflated mattress into your own carry-on luggage, occupying much-needed space and adding to your very own weight allowance. They also require a small amount of manual labour (I would say an ‘intense’ workout in my case considering my poor level of fitness) as these leg rests are, in essence, air mattresses.

Final Words: JetKids Bed Box Review

As a family of 4, we like to travel as minimal as possible. We legit share 2 x check-in suitcases between all of us. Imagine trying to juggle a 2 and 4-year old, (who I’m pretty sure are closer descendants to apes than humans) 4 suitcases, and a bunch of carry-on luggage? Nooope. We’d probably have to get our priorities straight and ditch a few items – first up, probably the kids.

In all seriousness though, we found the JetKids Bed Box to be tremendously helpful when it came down to moving kids from point A to B inside airports. Plus, they seemed to enjoy sitting on their suitcase way more than being rolled around in a stroller. Go figure.

All in all, I would say it’s ideal for families with young kids (under 7 years) travelling on long haul flights. Older kids won’t find much use for the bed component, as they will most likely be too tall to lie down comfortably without going into complete foetal position. However, it can still serve as a comfy leg rest for when they’re sitting up.

If you have 2 kids with one BedBox each, we found it handy to set them both up and then lie the kids sideways (parallel with the seats), which provided more space and leg room. If you’re really intent on getting your kids to sleep for long stretches, be sure to book night flights. We recently flew from Helsinki to Singapore and in combination with the Bed Box, our kids slept through most of the 12-hour flight which, mind you, is an absolute miracle.

The Best Travel Beds For Kids And Toddlers In 2023[Review]

best travel beds for kids and toddlerstod

A travel bed for kids and toddlers is a great essential to have when going on a vacation or maybe just for a sleepover at the grandparent’s house. The ideal travel bed for kids and toddlers should be lightweight, not too bulky and easy to carry.

There are plenty of options available on the market. When I did my research I realized quickly that there are a few different options of travel beds you as a parent can choose from:

  • the air mattress or inflatable bed
  • a foldable bed with foam inlay
  • the foldable bed , a travel cot with a steel constructed frame.

Which of these options are best for you and your child depends on your needs and what kind of transport you are using.

If you are planning to take a travel bed on an airplane to use at the vacation, an inflatable travel bed for kids might be the best solution. Most of them are lightweight and should fit into your suitcase.

In fact, inflatable air mattresses seem to be the most popular choice for parents when it comes to choosing a travel bed for toddlers and preschoolers.

At the end of this review, you’ll find a couple of options for foldable travel beds which are usually better suited for camping trips. Some people also dislike the idea of an air mattress because they can deflate due to punctures and the likes.

Price-wise, all our recommended travel beds are very similar in price and cost around $60 on average.

Without further ado, let’s have a look at our top choices of practical yet comfortable travel beds for kids and toddlers.

The Best Travel Beds For Kids And Toddlers In 2023

Inflatable travel beds, hiccapop inflatable toddler travel bed with safety bumpers.

hiccapop inflatable toddler travel bed

Weight: 8 lbs Size: 62″  x 39″ x 12″ Age: 2 years (maybe even younger) up to 6 years; max. weight 310lbs

There is a lot to like about the hiccapop inflatable travel bed. Not only comes it with a lifetime warranty (!) but it is also BPA,  phthalate and lead free. This is great for parents who are looking for a safe and healthy option for their precious kids.

According to customer reviews on Amazon, hiccapop has shown great customer service and has responded quickly to any product quality related issues.

The maximum weight limit is around 300 pounds which is also much higher than similar travel beds.

Rest assured, your little darling will sleep safe and sound in this travel bed without rolling out thanks to the extra high safety bumpers.

Standard crib sheets and blankets will fit the comfortable mattress.

What Are The Pros?

The biggest pro is the lifetime warranty plus great customer service. The hiccapop travel bed inflates incredibly fast in 30 seconds and is BPA free.

It comes with a convenient storage bag, is lightweight, and safe for even under two-year-olds.

 Are They Any Cons?

If there are any product related quality issues, the lifetime warranty has got you covered.

Overall, the hiccapop air travel mattress for toddlers and kids is affordable, lightweight, and perfect to take on a vacation, camping or a sleepover. Highly recommended!

The Shrunks Travel Bed

shrunks travel bed air mattress toddlers

Weight: 6.6 lbs Size: 62″ x 39″ x 12″ Age: from  2 years and older, max weight: 150 lbs

Without a doubt, the Shrunks inflatable travel bed is one of the most sold portable travel beds for kids and toddlers on Amazon. It is lightweight, comes with a storage bag, and, very important, is BPA, lead, and phthalates free. Safe and healthy sleeping guaranteed.

Speaking of guarantee, there are mixed pieces of information on Amazon regarding the product guarantee available. So I am not too sure if a two-year or lifetime warranty applies.

It is a breeze to tuck in standard crib sheets for a comfortable sleep and the bumpers will prevent your toddler from rolling off the mattress.

The Shrunks travel bed is a popular choice for parents who are looking for a safe and comfortable sleep option for their toddlers while on a vacation or a sleepover. The bed inflates quickly in around 30 seconds thanks to the powerful electric air pump.

It is not clear how the long the warranty is; a lifetime warranty would be fantastic. The Shrunks travel bed costs a little bit more than similar inflatable travel beds for toddlers.

Overall, the Shrunks portable travel bed is perfect for little kids and will make them feel comfortable on your next vacation and camping trip.

Active Era Air Mattress For Kids

active era travel bed for kids

The Active Era Kids Air Mattress comes with a hand-held electric pump, a repair kit, and storage bag. I do like that the bed comes with a fitted mattress cover with a moon and star design that will appeal to both girls and boys.

The bed is easy to inflate in around 60 seconds and can be stored away in the carry bag provided.

The wrap-around bumpers will prevent your child from rolling off the bed. So it is great for Toddlers but also for older children.

Pros: Many customers said that this bed doesn’t make much noise like other air beds. It also holds the air for a long time; in some cases for up to seven days! The bumper sides are perfect for keeping the little munchkins in bed.

The Active Era air mattress is lightweight and should fit into your travel luggage.

Last but not least the fitted cover is super soft, comfortable and made from 100% cotton.

Cons: It takes around 60 seconds to inflate the bed which is a bit slower than other air beds of the same size. The bed might not be suitable for camping unless you have a powerpoint for the electric pump.

Overall , the Active Era Kids Air Bed is a great choice to take on a vacation or a sleepover at Grandma’s place. It ticks all the boxes.

AeroBed Mattress for Kids

aerobed air mattress for kids

The AeroBed Mattress for kids is one of the bestsellers on Amazon with over 1500 sold items

It comes with an electric pump, a carry bag and a thick washable fitted mattress cover with a moon and star design. The bed deflates in an incredible 15 seconds and is easy to pack away. The 4-inch high surround safety cushion keeps your child safe and sound on the bed.

Pros: The mattress is very sturdy and durable. It stays inflated for a few nights. The bed inflates in under a minute and deflates, as mentioned before, in 15 seconds. The surround cushion is great to prevent your kid from rolling off.

The mattress cover will be liked by boys and girls and will keep them comfortable while sleeping.

Cons: The bed might not be suitable for camping since it comes with an electric pump. Some customers mentioned loud noises when the child moves on the bed. That could potentially disturb their sleep.

The AeroBed air mattress is a little bit heavier than similar air mattresses.

Overall , the AeroBed for kids is an excellent choice when you look for a comfortable bed that you can inflate in less than a minute and is easy to store.

Leachco BumpZZZ Travel Bed

leachco bumpzzz travel bed for kids

Weight: 6lbs Size: 58″  x 39″ x 7″ Age: from 3 years and older

The Leachco BumpZZZ travel bed is the perfect solution for parents who rather prefer a foldable travel bed for their children and dislike the idea of an air pump or punctures that may occur with an inflatable bed.

The BumpZZZ features a foam pad in the center and cushioned support and side bumpers. The padding is removable which means the outer material is machine washable.

The zipper enclosure is easy to use and kids just love the comfortable padding. We do like that the bed is made in the  USA.

There is no risk of any punctures because this bed is made from foam which means it is not inflatable but foldable. It comes with a travel bag in the size of a duffel bag. The material is washable and kids and toddlers alike will feel safe and secure in this travel bed.

The BumpZZZ might be a bit bulky to take on an airplane but can be checked separately. It is more expansive than inflatable travel beds for kids. Customers also noticed that it is hard to put a sheet on to protect the material.

Overall, BumpZZZ is a great alternative for parents who do prefer foldable travel beds rather than inflatable air mattresses. No more carrying an air pump, just unpack and fold it out. Done!

The Foldable Travel Bed

Foldable Beds are ideal for camping, as an extra bed at home or for holiday homes with no additional bedding. They are easy to fold and to store away.

They might be a bit big and bulky to take on an airplane. That would be something to inquire with the airline you are going to fly with.

Regalo My Cot Portable Toddler

regalo kids travel bed

The Regalo Portable Toddler Bed has been a Bestseller on Amazon for a long time.  It is easy and fast to set up.

The bed is made with a durable all-steel constructed frame with a canvas bed liner. This bed is lightweight with just 6.2 pounds. It comes with a washable matching cover and a carry case.

Pros:  The newer models of this bed don’t have a middle strap. The canvas linen has got criss-cross straps. This way it is more comfortable for your child to sleep on. The bed folds together to the size of a folding chair. So I guess you could even take it on a flight as check-in luggage. There is also a limited warranty for 90 days for a piece of mind.

Cons: There is no locking mechanism to prevent the bed from collapsing.

Overall , the Regalo Portable toddler bed is great value for money. It ticks all the boxes for a lightweight and portable travel bed.

Joovy Foocot Child Cot

joovo foocot travel bed foldable

The Joovy Foocot travel bed is compact and easy to use. Just fold it open and lock it. Done! No air pump required, no risk of punctures. This travel bed features two storage pockets which will be handy for your toddler’s toys, a flashlight or other little items.

It comes in three colors: green, blue, and pink. The handy travel bag has shoulder straps that make for easy carrying. The Joovy Foocot features a sturdy steel frame with nylon fabric.

The fabric is not removable but can be cleaned by wiping it down with a cloth and soapy water.

Pros: The storage pockets are practical and we do like that the frame can be locked to prevent it from collapsing. The travel bed is easy to set up, lightweight, and easy to store in the carry bag.

Cons: The Joovy Foocot is a bit pricier than the Regalo Cot.

Overall, the travel bed by Joovy is a great option for camping or to take on vacation. It is a simple and functional solution for whenever you need a spare bed.

The Benefits Of A Travel Bed At A Glance

Taking a travel bed on your next vacation has a lot of advantages for you and your child.

  • Your child will feel more comfortable in a new place and a foreign environment.
  • You are independent of beds provided by the hotel.
  • The beds are lightweight and easy to carry.
  • Your child can get used to his/her new bed before you go on vacation which will make it easier for them to settle. That means you are all getting a better night’s sleep. 🙂

Are you also interested in a portable travel crib? Please read my in-depth post  My Top 5 Travel Cribs For Babies – You Don’t Want To Go Without Them .

What kind of travel bed you will choose depends on your personal preference and your needs. I feel that the foldable bed is a better option for camping unless you have a powerpoint to use the electric pump for the inflatable beds.

The air beds seem to be more comfortable to sleep on and can be used for older children since they hold a bigger weight, up to 150 pounds. That would give you a few more years of use.

No matter what you choose, the quality of the beds in this review is great and provides fantastic value for your money.

Please let me know which travel bed you would prefer and why? I’d love to hear from you!

How To Pack A Suitcase, According To A Seasoned Traveler

Learning how to pack a suitcase can make future trips seamless and stress-free. With plenty of helpful packing methods out there, it’s easy to maximize the limited space of your suitcase so that you can bring as much as possible, depending on your itinerary. The best way to pack a suitcase depends on the length of your trip and other factors, such as the season you’re traveling in and your travel style.

For cruises or a one-hotel trip where you won’t be changing accommodations often, you will only need to think about packing and repacking once. However, if you plan on changing hotels and cities often, you will be packing, unpacking and lugging your suitcase around throughout your trip, meaning you’ll need to have a plan in place. No matter your itinerary, we’ve outlined the best strategies to help you pack more strategically, as well as some essential items to make packing as easy as possible.

Litter-Robot 4 Review: The Best Self-Cleaning Litter Box On The Market

The best folding treadmills, according to fitness experts, what you will need to pack a suitcase:.

  • Best Suitcase: Away The Bigger Carry-On
  • Best Packing Cubes: Bagsmart Keep Shape Packing Cubes , Eagle Creek Pack-It Tube , JJ Power Travel Shoe Bag
  • Best Toiletry Kit: Travelon Compact Hanging Toiletry Kit
  • Best Tech Kit: ProCase Electronic Organizer
  • Best Cosmetics Bag: Eachy Cosmetic Bag
  • Best Jewelry Case: Bagsmart Travel Jewelry Organizer Case

Step 1: Consider The Type of Travel

Before you even open your suitcase, you should think about the kind of trip you’re going on and how much space essential items will take up. If you’re packing for a ski trip , you will need to bring heavier, snow-proof gear—but you can re-wear most of it. On a beach trip, your summer outfits will take up less space, but you will need more of them as you lather on sunscreen and deal with sand and sweat.

Whether you’re flying domestically or internationally also plays a role in how you pack. On a domestic trip, familiar products are easier to find and you don’t need to worry about packing adaptors to charge your electronics. When you’re flying internationally, there may be some necessities that will be difficult or impossible to find abroad.

Step 2: Decide On The Number of Items

After you’ve considered the essentials for the style of your trip, think about how long your trip will be. Short trips can be the easiest to pack for because you can get away with squeezing in a little bit more than you need, while longer trips of two weeks or more are not so bad if you count on doing laundry somewhere along the way. I’ve found that I’m more likely to overpack on a week-long trip when I don’t think I will have a chance to do laundry and want to be prepared for a few different weather scenarios.

Start with this basic breakdown of how many of each item you should aim to pack depending on how long you’ll be traveling for—with optional items included if you’re traveling somewhere you expect to swim. If you plan on hitting the hotel gym or going for a jog or a bike ride, you should also bring along one outfit for working out and a pair of sneakers.

Weekend Trip

For a weekend trip, you really only need three outfits, or four if it’s a three-day weekend. This includes one nice outfit for going out to dinner, but it does not include what you’ll wear on the way to your destination.

  • 1-2 bottoms
  • 1 dress (optional)
  • 1 pajama set
  • 1 swimsuit (optional)
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • 3 pairs of underwear
  • 1 pair of comfortable shoes
  • 1 pair of “going-out” shoes (optional)
  • Toiletry bag with essentials (toothpaste, sunscreen, makeup, etc.)
  • Chargers and electronics

On a seven-day trip, you will need to pack clothes that can easily be mixed and matched, while prioritizing items that you can use multiple times, like jackets, jeans and sweaters that can handle multiple wears between washes. Always pack extra underwear and socks on a longer trip, especially if you’re doing a lot of physical activity.

  • 2-3 bottoms
  • 1-2 dresses (optional)
  • 1-2 swimsuits (optional)
  • 8 pairs of socks
  • 8 pairs of underwear
  • 1 pair of comfortable close-toed walking shoes
  • 1 pair of sandals or flip-flops (optional)

Two-Week Trip Or Longer

If you’re traveling for two weeks or longer, you should plan to do laundry at some point during your trip so you can pack less and have a fresh start somewhere in the middle of your travels. However, things don’t always go according to plan, so you should still pack more than one week’s worth of clothes just in case.

  • 3-4 bottoms
  • 2-3 dresses (optional)
  • 8-14 pairs of socks
  • 8-14 pairs of underwear

Step 3: Choose The Packing Methods And Products To Help You Pack

If you are flying carry-on only, all of your liquids must be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces and fit in a clear quart-sized bag. If you check your luggage you can bring toiletries that go over this size limit, but you should still pack, wrap and secure them tightly in plastic bags so that if they they leak during transit, the rest of your items will not be ruined.

To keep your toiletries organized throughout your trip, you’ll need a hanging bag like the Travelon Compact Hanging Toiletry Kit . This particular bag is a great choice as it allows you to see everything laid out just how you left it and it’s quick to pack up. However, if you need more space for a large makeup collection, check out the super spacious and customizable Eachy Cosmetic Bag .

Dress Shirts

To minimize wrinkles in your best shirts, use the narrow fold method. Button up the shirt and lie it flat with the buttons facing down. Fold the sleeves across the back of the shirt and then up at a 90-degree angle until the cuffs line up with the collar. Fold the sides to overlap on top of the sleeves, and fold the fest of the shirt up from the bottom until you have a neat square package. You may still have to iron out the folds when you arrive.

To protect your shoes while traveling, pack them in a separate waterproof bag and fill any empty space with socks or other small soft items that will give them extra protection and help them keep their shape. You can use a plastic bag if you’re in a pinch, but these waterproof shoe bags are specifically designed to hold their shape and have an extra pocket to fit a pair of flip flops.

Packing Cubes

These essential travel tools make a world of difference when it comes to keeping your suitcase organized, but most people use them wrong. Your first instinct might tell you to put pants with pants and shirts with shirts, but the most effective way I’ve found to use packing cubes—especially on a trip with multiple transfers— is to group clothing by activity.

Keep your day-to-day sightseeing clothes in a separate cube from your going-out-for-dinner clothes or beach-gear cube. When it’s time to get dressed, you’ll have your outfit pre-planned and I also find that it’s also a good way to store accessories. For example, I always bring my favorite microfiber beach towel with me, so I keep this in a separate cube with my swimsuits, a beach dress and a sun hat. When I’m not looking for my beach clothes, it doesn’t get in the way and it doesn’t get lost.

I prefer cubes with some shape, like these BagSmart packing cubes , but I also like to mix it up. I’ve found that the Eagle Creek Pack-It Tube is the best shape for storing my rolled socks and underwear, which I always keep in my carry-on in case my luggage gets lost.

If you love to accessorize, you’ll need a system to prevent your favorite jewelry from getting left behind in random hotel rooms. Instead of bringing along a hard-sided jewelry box which could tangle your necklaces as they get jostled around, try a folding jewelry organizer like this case from BagSmart , available in three sizes.

Electronics

In addition to a good case for your laptop or tablet, you should also have a separate organizer case for all your wires, chargers, portable batteries, and hard drives. If you’re bringing a lot of electronics, protect them with a hard-sided case like this ProCase Electronic Organizer , which has multiple compartments and partitions to keep your gear tangle-free.

Is It Better To Roll Or Fold Clothes In A Suitcase?

If your goal is to fit as much as possible into your suitcase, rolling is the way to go. However, if you need your clothes ready to go as soon as you land and won’t have time for ironing, folding is preferable. The best strategy is to do a bit of both, rolling items like underwear and pajamas, but folding nice shirts and dresses.

What Is The 5 4 3 2 1 Packing Method?

The 5 4 3 2 1 packing method maximizes potential outfit combinations so you can express your personal style. It works by assigning a number to each category of clothing: 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 shoes, 2 dresses, and 1 bag. It’s a good jumping-off point, but you may need to adjust the numbers for longer or shorter trips.

Why You Should Never Put Your Suitcase on the Bed

Welcome to AFAR Answers: a deep dive into all your unanswered travel questions. First up: Why are there luggage racks in hotel rooms?

For years, I had the same packing routine: Pull my hard-shell roller suitcase from under my bed, toss it on my duvet, and fill it with clothes. Once I checked into my hotel or Airbnb, unless a luggage rack had been set up somewhere convenient, I'd throw my luggage onto the bed again and pull out the things I needed for the night before chucking it all on the floor. But that all changed in 2019.

After Netflix released Tidying Up with Marie Kondo , we tapped the organizing expert for her packing tips . At the end of the interview, Kondo said whenever she returns from a trip she unpacks immediately and wipes the wheels of her suitcase before returning her luggage to her closet.

As I read those words, my mind spun. While I've tried (and failed) to unpack as soon as I get home, I had never wiped down the wheels of my luggage. I immediately thought of all the places my suitcase had been. Its wheels have touched New York City and New Orleans sidewalks, rolled across London Tube platforms, and been dragged through sand and mud on the Indonesian island of Gili Trawangan.

When I finally cleaned my suitcase with Clorox wipes, I was appalled. It took about two or three wipes each to get all the dirt, gunk, and unseen germs off of four little wheels.

Why didn't anyone-well, besides Marie-warn us? I'm certainly not the only one throwing my suitcase on a bed. Back in 2019, a search for "packing suitcase" on a stock photo site delivered more than 38,000 results. Of the roughly 100 images on the first page of results, 31 photos depicted travelers-businessmen, young women, families, and elderly couples alike-packing a suitcase on top of a bed. Only 11 photos showed people-including one pregnant woman-packing a bag on the floor.

But in the five years since I first published this article, it appears I have gotten through to many people. A recent poll of AFAR staff showed that most of us either packed on the floor (44 percent), on a luggage rack (38 percent), and other nonbed methods (6 percent) like balancing it on top of a hamper. However, 12 percent of AFAR's staff still pack their suitcase on the bed. AFAR's social media audience told a similar story. From a poll of just over 2,600 people on AFAR's Instagram stories, most people either packed on the floor (41 percent), on a luggage rack (40 percent), or other nonbed methods (3 percent). A small portion of AFAR's readers still pack their suitcase on the bed (16 percent).

To those I haven't gotten through to yet, here's why you should always use the luggage rack in your hotel room. It's unclear exactly when they were invented, but they likely became popular in the late 19th century, when travelers started carrying hand-held suitcases rather than hefty trunks. Until wheeled luggage was invented in the 1970s, porters typically handled suitcases, ferrying them from point A to B. What once was a handy way to access your clothing without having to sit on the floor-or completely unpack your bag into a hotel room dresser-is also now the best way to keep your germy bag away from the place you're sleeping.

And as bedbugs become more of a global issue, keeping your suitcase on a luggage rack reduces your risk of encountering those little life ruiners. However, Rob Anderson , an associate professor who researches blood-feeding pests like bedbugs in the biology department at the University of Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada, takes it one step further.

"In theory, trying to keep a suitcase from touching walls and carpet and beds, et cetera, might reduce the likelihood of bedbugs ‘climbing aboard' because the luggage has reduced points of contact, but bedbugs, as with most insects, can climb really well," Anderson says. But Anderson says he now recommends that people keep their luggage inside a large-volume garbage bag with a tight closure when staying in hotels.

If that's not a feasible solution, a luggage rack is better than nothing. If one isn't set up when you arrive in your room, there's typically one in the closet. (Shout-out to the Yotel San Francisco : Because of the pod-size rooms, there are no closets to store luggage racks. When I stayed there in 2019, I loved using the handy built-in luggage shelf that makes accessing your bag easy without needing to put it on the bed.)

Once you're back home, there are a few alternatives to packing your bag on the floor. If you use packing cubes , it's easiest to lay out what you want to pack and fold it all into the cubes on the bed. Then just organize the cubes in the suitcase on the floor. If you want to avoid the floor entirely and don't mind the extra laundry, throw a spare towel across the bed and pack your luggage on top of that.

Amazon sells a variety of luggage racks for $100 or less ; you can keep one in your closet and pull it out when you pack. It also doesn't hurt to get one for your guest room: It's easier than getting into an argument with your mother-in-law about why you don't want her suitcase on your white comforter.

This article originally appeared online in 2019; it was updated on March 14, 2024, to include current information.

If you've ever wondered why that little bed scarf some hotels use at the foot of the bed exists-just think of how many people unpack their bags on the beds.

Oklahoma man detained on Caribbean island for carrying ammo, family struggles to cope

The american tourist could face a minimum of 12 years in prison for carrying ammunition, by de'anthony taylor and meredith land • published april 24, 2024 • updated on april 24, 2024 at 10:52 pm.

A Fort Worth woman and her two children, now living in Oklahoma, are coping with a new reality after her husband was detained in Turks and Caicos following the discovery of ammunition in his carry-on bag .

Ryan and Valerie Watson left for the Turks and Caicos Islands on April 7 to celebrate Ryan and two friends' 40th birthdays. They were returning from vacation when the incident occurred.

When the couple went through security for their flight, their carry-on was flagged and searched. Officials then found a Ziploc bag of about four bullets.

According to Valerie, the bullets were mistakenly still in the bag after her husband had been hunting the weekend before.

The Watsons were questioned and charged with possession of ammunition. Valerie was released, and her charges were dropped after she had been detained on the island for days.

NBC 5's Meredith Land spoke with Watson on Wednesday about how her kids cope with their father's absence.

Watson's children, aged seven and nine, struggle to come to terms with the situation.

"This is just our reality, so I've been honest in the best way as a mom to young kids to explain what is happening," said Watson.

"They knew that Daddy was in jail because we talked to them about their emotions, watching them try to handle their big emotions. Yesterday was really difficult for me."

In Turks and Caicos, carrying ammunition is a serious offense that carries a mandatory minimum of 12 years in prison. In September 2023, the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a  travel alert warning Americans  after a tourist from Indiana got an eight-month prison sentence for possession of ammunition.

"When you realize what it was, in the back of my mind, I was thinking it was me, and that I had too much liquid or my perfume bottle was too big or something. And they showed us what it was, and immediately, my heart just sank and I had a pit in my stomach. We are in a foreign country, and I don't know what their rules and laws are," she said.

"I have a lot of help because I know that this is part of God's plan for us," said Watson.

The wife and mother also revealed that two U.S. senators from Oklahoma and the governor are writing "good character" letters on her husband's behalf, but there are no guarantees. The family is now waiting for the situation to be resolved.
