Best Safaris Near Mt Kilimanjaro

Best Safaris Near Mt Kilimanjaro

Anthony is a renowned Africa expert and author of the Lonely Planet guidebook to Tanzania.

The area near Mt Kilimanjaro, on the Tanzanian side of the border, is one of East Africa’s most alluring safari destinations. There’s so much to do here, from exploring the better-known northern safari parks of Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, to lesser-known attractions such as West Kilimanjaro, Mkomazi and Lake Natron/Ol Doinyo Lengai where you can enjoy a quieter, more intimate safari experience.

Wherever you go, there’s often plenty of great wildlife to see. But there’s grandeur here, too, and your most memorable sightings may well involve standing in awe before some of Africa’s most magnificent mountains. Many tours in Tanzania’s north depart from Arusha, so consider booking somewhere to stay in town the night before your tour begins (if such accommodation is not already included in your tour).

3,472 Safaris Near Mt Kilimanjaro

1. Ngorongoro Crater

Zebra's walking at Ngorongoro Crater

It’s a long drive from Moshi to Ngorongoro Crater, but we’ve never heard anyone complain. Ngorongoro is truly one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders, a lost world of wildlife – lions, elephants, black rhino, spotted hyenas, flamingos and so much more – and a setting that surpasses anything you’ll see elsewhere. The excitement of descending into the crater in the soft, post-dawn light has few rivals on Tanzania’s safari circuit, and the combination of views, wildlife and sheer, unadulterated beauty make this an experience to savor.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 5 to 6 hours
  • Accommodation: The road from the provincial town of Karatu up to the Ngorongoro Crater rim is lined with fine lodges and other accommodation, often tucked away in the forests. The views from the tented camps, lodges and campsites up on the rim itself can be magnificent.
  • Activities: Game drives; picnics; bird watching

2. Tarangire National Park

Elephant walking at Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is a true land of giants: the park is filled with both elephants and baobab trees, and they will be soulful presences throughout your stay in this wonderful place. The park is also known for its big cats, big herds of zebra and more, and a terrific selection of accommodation both inside and immediately outside the park. It doesn’t get the same crowds as other parks in the Northern safari circuit, which means you may sometimes have a wildlife sighting all to yourself. I have spent time in Tarangire with hunting cheetah families and roaming prides of lions with not another vehicle to be seen.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 4 to 5 hours
  • Accommodation: Tarangire has terrific accommodation, with a handful of lodges and tented camps sprinkled throughout the park and around the park’s perimeter.
  • Activities: Game drives; bird watching

2,839 Tarangire Safaris

3. Lake Manyara National Park

Is that a lion on a tree?

An easy drive from Moshi, Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania’s best parks. It combines dramatic scenery – the Great Rift escarpment rises abruptly along the park’s western boundary – with a fantastic wildlife offering. Some of the earliest elephant adventures of famed elephant expert Iain Douglas-Hamilton took place here, as memorably described in Peter Matthiessen’s The Tree Where Man Was Born . The park is also well known for its tree-climbing lions: you never quite know when you’ll look up to find a lion gazing back at you. The birdlife here is incredible, especially near the park entrance and along the shores of Lake Manyara.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 4 hours
  • Accommodation: There’s lots of accommodation across a range of budgets in the town of Mto wa Mbu near the park entrance, or along the rim of the Great Rift escarpment from where there are incredible views. Inside the park, there’s a small number of good choices too.
  • Activities: Game drives; treetop canopy walks; bird watching

1,871 Lake Manyara Safaris

4. Arusha National Park

Black-and-white colobus

It’s an easier journey than you might think from the forested foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro to Arusha National Park; it’s easily reached by road from Moshi. It’s a fantastic park with some of the best scenery anywhere in East Africa. Within the park’s boundaries are Mt Meru, which is easily Mt Kilimanjaro’s rival when it comes to beauty, Ngurdoto Crater (which is often nicknamed Little Ngorongoro), and a patch of wildlife-rich grasslands known as Serengeti Ndogo (Little Serengeti). While on safari here, you might see blue monkeys and black-and-white colobuses, as well as giraffes, elephants, zebras, red duikers, waterbucks, bushbucks, klipspringers, dik-diks, buffalo and hippos. You can also go canoeing, look for some of the 400 different bird species, and trek to the summit of Mt Meru.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 2 hours
  • Accommodation: For day trips, you could easily base yourself in Moshi, Arusha, or along the Arusha–Moshi road. Inside the park are several campsites and the excellent Hatari Lodge.
  • Activities: Game drives; mountain climbing; hiking; bird watching

185 Arusha NP Safaris

5. Mkomazi National Park

Group of giraffes

Visiting Mkomazi means leaving behind safari stereotypes as much as it means leaving behind the crowds. Most safari vehicles rush past, but that’s only because the word is not yet out that Mkomazi is an exciting safari destination of the future. The mainstays of the Mkomazi experience are very much in place: exceptional views of Mt Kilimanjaro with the picturesque Usambara Mountains also providing their share of scenic beauty, offset by rugged rocky hills, baobabs and arid plains. You’ll almost certainly see topi, eland, zebra and giraffe here.

The dry country of the park is also perfectly suited to seeing some desert-adapted, much-prized species, such as the fringe-eared oryx, lesser kudu and gerenuk (the gazelle that longs to be a giraffe). The bird watching, too, is outstanding: remarkably, more than 400 species have been recorded at Mkomazi. Enclosures for reintroduced black rhinos and African wild dogs, with a view to their eventual release into the wild, also add considerable gravitas to any visit here.

  • Accommodation: You could visit on a day trip from Moshi, but there are at least two campsites inside the park as well as several permanent tented camps including Mkomazi View Camp.

6. Lake Natron & Ol Doinyo Lengai

Flamingos feeding in the lake

It may look a little far on the map, but a shortcut to Lake Natron off the Arusha–Nairobi road makes these two little-visited destinations a natural fit. A trip here to the remote Crater Highlands is such a refreshingly different experience to so many other northern Tanzanian safari destinations. For a start, Lake Natron is one of the best places in East Africa to see the massed pink populations of flamingos, and the backdrop to the lake is guaranteed to stir the soul. Ol Doinyo Lengai, just beyond Lake Natron’s southern shore, is one of the most beautiful peaks anywhere in Africa. Climb it if you wish, but wherever you are in the area, you’ll find yourself trying to glimpse the mountain known to the local Maasai as ‘Mountain of God’.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 3½ to 5 hours
  • Accommodation: Accommodation lies thinly spread not far from the southern shore of Lake Natron. These include lodges, tented camps and campgrounds.
  • Activities: Game drives; mountain climbing; bird watching

177 Lake Natron Safaris

7. West Kilimanjaro

Masaai in Tanzania

Skirting the western foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro, West Kilimanjaro is for discerning safari travelers. Here a safari can combine cultural experiences, wildlife and astonishing views, but without the visitor numbers you might expect elsewhere. The region is an important corridor for elephants migrating, and lions dispersing, between Kenya’s Amboseli National Park and northern Tanzania. Seeing these and other iconic species in the wild, thinly populated country in these parts could be a real highlight.

This is Maasai country, part of a heartland that extends all across northern Tanzania and southern Kenya. But here it’s more about encountering Maasai communities on their terms and without the hype. Best of all, the uninterrupted mountain views of not just Mt Kilimanjaro, but also Mt Meru, Mt Longido, and the Crater Highlands out to the west, are among the best anywhere in Tanzania. With a handful of secluded and exclusive tented camps in the area, it’s an emerging safari destination that won’t remain a secret for long.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 1 hour
  • Accommodation: There aren’t many choices in the area, but there is a handful of tented camps across the hills west of Mt Kilimanjaro. Shu’mata Camp is a fabulous choice.
  • Activities: Game drives

West Kilimanjaro Tours

8. Lake Chala

Lake Chala, crater lake on the border of Kenya and Tanzania

Northern Tanzania may have its fair share of beautiful crater lakes, but Lake Chala, not far from Moshi, is an excellent add-on to a safari in Mkomazi National Park. The crater’s steep, forested walls plunge down to mysterious blue-green waters, and there are so many pretty vantage points from which to enjoy the views. Like other destinations near Mt Kilimanjaro, there will rarely be anyone else in your photo, and it’s really close to Marangu, one of the main gates for Mt Kilimanjaro National Park.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 75 minutes
  • Accommodation: Most people visit on a day trip from Moshi or Marangu, but Lake Chala Safari Lodge & Campsite is a friendly camp that overlooks the lake.
  • Activities: Sightseeing

12-Day Kilimanjaro-Tanzania Wildlife Safari

Ultimate guide for planning tanzania kilimanjaro safaris.

The Kilimanjaro are very popular mountains not just in Tanzania, East Africa, Or Africa but world over being that it’s the tallest mountain Africa .

Some people only know the Kilimanjaro for its part in several movies and documentaries. When one picks interest in the Kilimanjaro, they would want to know how it was formed , where it is found, how tall it is and many other questions.

Kilimanjaro Meaning – Meaning of the word “Kilimanjaro”

Kilimanjaro Meaning – Meaning of the word “Kilimanjaro”

The question mostly asked but has never gotten a good answer is the origin of the name “Kilimanjaro” . It is believed that the Kilimanjaro name has roots in Swahili, Chagga and Masai languages.

There has been however no conclusive research to ascertain this claim.

The Nuttall Encyclopaedia was the first official document in the year 1907 to refer this mountain by then as the Kilima-Njaro.

There is no clear origin of this name but from the time the Europeans started exploring the Kilimanjaro in the 1860s, the mountain adopted this names somehow.

In 1885, Jim Thompson claimed that Kilima-Njaro that the locals believed that this name was interpreted as the mountain of glory (kilima) (njaro).

“Njaro” in one Kiswahili dialect means shining which is asserted that it was to refer to the snow on the top of this mountain.

There are a group people that claim the word “kilima” means mountain in Kiswahili. However the actual word means “hill”. “Mlima” is the actual word to mean mountain in Kiswahili.

The Chagga people who are the natives of the area are credited for naming the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks of the Kilimanjaro.

Famous safari parks in Africa

We have compiled a list of some of the most iconic safari destinations on the continent

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania stands out among Africa's safari parks. It boasts the highest density of large wildlife in the world. Within Ngorongoro, the abundance of fauna is so remarkable that encountering lions, elephants, rhinos, zebras and many other animals is a common experience.

Serengeti National Park is arguably Africa's most famous wildlife reserve. Here, it's possible to see the Big Five: lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, rhino, and leopard – all in just one day. The park is also home to a wealth of other iconic animals and birds, making it a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The legendary Great Wildebeest Migration, the largest annual movement of land animals on the planet, takes place in the Serengeti.

Tarangire National Park, a prime safari destination in Tanzania, is often the first stop on multi-day safari itineraries. It's renowned for its picturesque Tarangire River, and stunning landscapes marked by signature baobab and acacia trees. The park is home to large populations of elephants and lions. All that makes Tarangire a must-visit for those just starting their safari adventure or those who have only one day for the trip.

Namibia's Etosha National Park is one of the largest in Africa. While not as diverse as some East African parks, it still hosts a substantial number of large mammals, including elephants and rhinos. A standout feature of Etosha is its arid, desert-like landscapes. They offer a striking contrast to the lush green savannahs found elsewhere.

The Okavango Delta in Botswana, listed among the Seven Wonders of Africa, is renowned for its abundant water sources. This lush environment attracts all of Africa's largest animals, including the Big Five. It is a standout destination for all visiting the southern part of the continent.

Kruger National Park, located in northeastern South Africa, is one of Africa's largest game reserves, spanning vast landscapes of savannah, bushveld, and tropical forests. Renowned for its rich biodiversity, the park is home to an impressive array of wildlife, including the Big Five.

Popular questions about African safari tours

There are 54 African countries, but only about 15% are famous for their safari. Popular safari destinations include Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, and Zambia. Each offers unique attractions to suit various preferences and budgets. After extensive exploration across the continent, we've found that Tanzania's national parks – Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire – stand out as the richest in wildlife diversity and immersive experiences.

The quintessential African safari unfolds over an 8-10 day journey through Northern Tanzania. Beginning in Arusha National Park, travelers venture through the diverse landscapes of Tarangire, experience the wonders of the Ngorongoro Crater, spend pivotal days in the expansive Serengeti plains, and conclude their adventure at Lake Natron with its flocks of over a million flamingos. This itinerary guarantees encounters with the Big Five and a rich tapestry of African wildlife.

Notably, Ngorongoro offers a rare glimpse of black rhinos, a sight few places can provide. The Serengeti, on the other hand, showcases the awe-inspiring Great Wildebeest Migration. Over a million wildebeests, zebras, and other ungulates traverse the savannah in search of fresh pastures, creating a breathtaking natural display.

A 5-7 day safari in Africa is ideal for a first-time experience, allowing you to see the majority of safari animals. However, for true wildlife enthusiasts, an 8-10 day trip is recommended to thoroughly explore the northern national parks of Tanzania. If time permits, extending the journey to the southern and western parks will enrich your experience even further.

Some tour operators offer expansive 20+ day overland safaris spanning multiple East African countries. Those often entail spending nights in canvas tents. Such itineraries can sometimes feel rushed and cursory. They might not provide the depth and immersion each park truly deserves, given the time consumed in setting up and dismantling camps. Additionally, the comfort offered by tents can't rival that of established lodges.

For those seeking a richer, more profound safari experience, we recommend immersing oneself in the treasures of a single country. By focusing on one nation, travelers can delve deeper into its distinct culture, landscapes, and wildlife. In doing so, they stand to witness a richer tapestry of animals, landscapes, and cultures than by merely skimming across multiple Safari countries in a fleeting two-week span.

Several factors, including the destination country, the size of the travel group, and the level of lodging influence the cost of an African safari package. The overall price includes national park fees, hotels, transportation, and guide salaries, among other things.

Having experienced numerous destinations from Cape Town to Northern Africa, our team's extensive safari experiences affirm that Tanzania stands out as the premier destination, offering an unmatched blend of price and quality.

In Tanzania, travelers can expect the following price ranges:

Budget Camping Safari: Priced between $150 and $400 per person per day, this segment offers a range from basic camping setups to economical 2-2.5* hotels. We don’t organize this type of safari, but our team will be happy to give you advice if you are planning to travel to Tanzania on a budget.

Midrange Safari: Priced between $400 and $700 per person per day, this option includes comfortable 3-4* lodges or hotels with all the necessary amenities for a pleasant stay.

Luxury Safari: Ranging from $700 to $1100 per person per day, this level offers a more opulent experience, including hot air balloon rides and stays in top-tier 4-5* hotels.

Ultra Luxury Safari: For a truly exclusive tailor-made safari experience, prices span from $1100 to $5000 per person per day. This elite tier features stays in lodges favored by celebrities and top executives. Moreover, it may encompass private charter flights, bespoke walking safaris, dedicated personal chefs, and the exclusive use of camps, ensuring the utmost luxury, privacy, and tailored experiences.

These price ranges cater to diverse preferences, ensuring visitors to Tanzania find a safari that aligns with both their budget and tastes.

What to wear on an African safari?

There are no strict dress codes for an African safari. Generally, we recommend wearing khaki or light-grey-colored shorts or pants, paired with a T-shirt or shirt. A fleece jacket is advisable for cooler evenings and mornings. Footwear should include closed shoes with sturdy soles for savannah adventures, and comfortable options for relaxing at the lodge. Additionally, remember to pack sunglasses and a hat for sun protection.

In terms of colors, it's best to avoid white, which shows dust easily, blue, which attracts tsetse flies Tsetse flies are blood-sucking insects found in sub-Saharan Africa. Recognizable by their large size and distinct buzzing sound, tsetse flies can disrupt the outdoor experience for travelers. It's recommended for safari-goers to wear neutral-colored attire and take other precautions to reduce encounters with these persistent insects. , and camouflage patterns, which in African countries are reserved for the military.

Our safari expert shares more tips in this short video:

African safaris are increasingly popular among families, accounting for over 45% of visitors. While some lodges set an age limit of 5, children aged four and up often find the experience enthralling. While kids can marvel at natural wonders like the Ngorongoro Crater or Victoria Falls, it's the diverse wildlife that truly captivates and excites them the most. We recommend preparing children beforehand to make the trip even more interesting for them. African-themed books, games, or activities are fantastic for that. Going on a Tanzanian safari with children is an exciting and safe experience for the whole family. Still, parents should remain vigilant when venturing into the wild expanses of this beautiful country and not let kids wander off.

The top hiking destinations in Africa include Tanzania's iconic peaks, Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. Both are accessible to beginners, demanding no prior mountaineering expertise.

In contrast, Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains and Mount Kenya offer breathtaking panoramas but require technical climbing gear like ice axes and crampons. Additionally, the mountain infrastructure in Uganda and Kenya is less developed compared to Tanzania's well-established facilities. For those aspiring to summit these peaks, our team members, having scaled them all, advise tackling them after a Kilimanjaro expedition. It's also advantageous to acquire technical climbing experience in more forgiving terrains, such as the Alps or other suitable regions.

The ideal time for a Tanzanian safari depends on personal preferences. Opting for a rainy season safari, from November to late December and from mid-March to May, can be cost-effective due to seasonal hotel discounts. There are also much fewer other travelers in the parks. However, be prepared for potential all-day rains.

The other months, spanning from January to mid-March and June to October, generally promise excellent, sunny weather, though there can be exceptions. These dry season periods attract the most tourists. The festive season around Christmas is often the easiest. Safari prices are higher during these times.

We believe the optimal time for a safari is at the cusp of these peak season times. In late October, early March, and early June. These transitional periods offer a sweet spot where the rains are either yet to start or just ending, and the tourist influx is still minimal, providing a balanced experience of good weather and relative tranquillity.

Tanzania stands out as the best safari destination in Africa. In 2023, the country won the prestigious World's Leading Safari Destination title. Its stunningly beautiful national parks and developed infrastructure make Tanzania the ideal choice for memorable and safe African safari tours.

Another famous destination in East Africa is Kenya, famous for its Maasai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park. Botswana with its Chobe National Park, South Africa with numerous wildlife reserves near Cape Town and Kruger National Park, and picturesque Namibia represent famous destinations in southern Africa.

Zambia and Zimbabwe boast the majestic Victoria Falls. The latter is famous for Matobo National Park and Hwange National Park. Uganda and Rwanda captivate with their renowned adventures in East-Central Africa that include observing mountain gorillas and other wild animals.

Combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a wildlife safari is seamless and convenient. Landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport places you just 50 km away from the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. Additionally, the popular northern safari parks are within a comfortable driving distance from the airport. For those with limited time, there are shorter 2-3 day safari options that offer a captivating glimpse into Tanzania's magnificent wildlife. Plus, bush flights are available for even swifter transitions.

East Africa boasts exquisite beach destinations, such as Quirimbas in Mozambique, Kenya's Diani and Lamu, and Anse Source D’Argent in the Seychelles. Zanzibar in Tanzania remains a sought-after spot. For a quieter retreat, Tanzania's Mnemba, Mafia, and Pemba islands offer unparalleled diving amidst untouched coral reefs.

Nicas is an amazing safari guide. He spent ap much time and put in so much effort to give us a great experience. I was nervous about a trip like this but Nicas made me feel completely at ease. He truly goes above and beyond for his clients! Thank you for the trip of a lifetime, Nicas!!!

Connie Gillian

Amazing experience with Kilimanjaro Habitas Safaris and Nicas in Tanzania. Of the many countries my wife and I have visited, Tanzania is certainly one of the best. Not only because the Serengeti has a unique ecosystem in the world, but also because Kilimanjaro and safaris arranged the perfect itinerary for us, with 7 days of high quality service from our guide Nicas. All the hotels arranged by Cindy had a strong local flavor, convenient locations, delicious meals, and personable service. Nicas is an exceptional ecologist and navigator. With expertise in all animals, birds and plants, he showed us how the Tanzanian government and people have maintained this unique ecosystem. He has excellent driving skills and knows all the routes, even to niche areas like Ndutu, so we always get to the location quickly. Thanks you so much for his enthusiasm in introducing the animals and culture, finding great angles so we could get some great photos, and really enjoying looking for wildlife together. Thanks for Kilimanjaro Habitas Safaris and Nicas for many unforgettable memories and experiences, and we will definitely come back to travel with you guys in Tanzania again.

Tanzania Safari – Visit 13 Incredible Safari Locations after Kilimanjaro

Split Top with Sidebar

Tanzania is a vast country and a natural gem. Its safari experiences are divided into north, south and west. With its Serengeti and   Ngorongoro wildlife splendour, the north is the most popular destination. Selous   and   Ruaha parks of the south  are significantly less touristy, and their big five safaris are just as impressive.  The western areas  of the wild  Mahale Mountains  and Gombe offer exciting chimpanzee trekking and are only visited by about 4-5% of the tourists.

I've been on several safaris through Northern, Western and Southern Tanzania over the years. I can honestly say that each experience has given me a deeper appreciation of efforts made towards wildlife and nature conservation in East Africa.

In this article, I'll share my insights on the 13 best national parks and what you can expect while planning the ultimate Tanzania Safari experience.

Let's get started.

Tanzania safari map by Mountain IQ

Before we dive into the Tanzania Safari FAQs, it would be a good idea to first orient yourself with our user-friendly map of Tanzania above. As you can see, Tanzania is a massive country filled with 17 national parks and 7 game reserves. It's no wonder that it's fondly nicknamed 'Safari Country' - quite apt for planning an epic Tanzania Safari, I'd say.

Without further ado, let's dive into the Tanzania Safari FAQs!

Tanzania Safari FAQs

When is the best time for a tanzania safari.

The dry season from June to October is the best time for a Tanzania Safari . The temperature averages between 20⁰C (68⁰F) – 30⁰C (86⁰F) in the dry season. You will be able to spot most animals during a game drive in the daytime. Walking safaris are more pleasant as well, but remember to wear a hat and sunscreen.

The Tanzanian climate is split into two distinct seasons:

  • Dry season - June to October
  • Wet Season - November till May

What should I pack for a Tanzania Safari?

Apart from your travel essentials like passport, vaccination identification, prescription medication and camera, you should pack some safari clothes and a few other items for a Tanzania Safari.

Safari clothing is best layered for various weather. Be sure to also bring along these items too:

  • a few pairs of comfortable underwear
  • long sleeve shirt or T-shirt
  • convertible trousers
  • walking shoes and socks
  • a scarf to cover your neck and face if required
  • regular sandals
  • light raincoat or poncho
  • an outfit for dinners at the lodges

Is Tanzania dangerous for tourists?

Tanzania is safe to visit, especially if you’re travelling as part of an organised tour. Guides are travel specialists and will know which areas to avoid. Pickpocketing and theft are common in big cities, but are less of a concern while on safari in more remote parts of Tanzania .

If you are visiting Tanzania alone, it would be wise to take a reliable local guide with you on safari. You should ask the hotel management about the areas you must avoid. It’s also a good idea to refrain from walking around alone and at night.

What are the most popular national parks for a Tanzania Safari?

The most popular national parks for a Tanzania Safari are without a doubt the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Gombe, Mahale, Ruaha and Selous . That's not to say there aren't other incredible national parks that tourists like to visit. I'll talk more about each safari region in Tanzania and what you can do at each national park in this article.

As a large country with  immense wildlife  and other natural beauty, Tanzania can roughly be divided into northern, southern and western safari circuits.

Northern Circuit parks are usually visited by an absolute majority of travellers since they offer the classic Big Five wildlife viewing. The parks include Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater National Park and Lake Manyara National Park .

Southern Circuit parks , like Selous and Ruaha, are visited by about a quarter of all tourists and offer similar Big Five wildlife viewing experiences. Big Five animals include lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

Western parks are famous for their chimpanzee tracking safaris in the Mahale Mountains and   Gombe National Park, as well as the largest buffalo herds in the world seen in Katavi.

Which tour? Here are 5 Northern Tanzania safari tours I recommend:

  • Group Camping Safari that includes Tarangire and Ngorongoro  (4 days)
  • Budget Serengeti Safari  (5 days)
  • Scenic Northern Tanzania Safari  (7 days)
  • Serengeti Trail that includes Ngorongoro  (8 days)
  • Best of Kenya and Tanzania (incl. 6 national parks)  (12 days)

See more  Northern Tanzania safari deals .

What parks can I visit in the Northern Circuit?

That's easy. You can visit six national parks in the Northern Circuit:

  • Lake Manyara
  • Mount Kilimanjaro

serengeti-tanzania

A lioness relaxing on an old acacia tree in the Serengeti

What can I do at Serengeti National Park?

There are numerous things you can do at Serengeti National Park , like tracking the Great Wildebeest Migration, viewing the Big Five and hot air ballooning .

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and Tanzania’s oldest reserve, Serengeti is best known for the Great Wildebeest Migration , taking place from late January to September. It is a classic safari destination attracting the largest number of predator animals in the world.

During the Great Migration to the border of the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya, the plains are full of herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle – exceeding over 2 million animals. Predators tend to trail the herds, picking off the weak, so you can expect to see their hunt quite close.

The best time to see predation is during the calving season from late January to February. The Seronera area gets very crowded during the dry season from June to October.

ngorongoro-tanzania

Safari jeeps in Ngorongoro National Park

What can I do at Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area?

There are numerous things you can do at Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area , like visiting the million-year old crater, viewing the Big Five, or enjoying a Masai Village cultural visit.

Ngorongoro has all the safari highlights in one spot: you can see the Big Five in one day, and predators and the black rhino are relatively easy to spot, among the stunning scenery. Here you can also encounter black-backed jackals and spotted hyenas, as well as see large flocks of flamingo at Lake Magadi .

And of course, there’s the Ngorongoro Crater . This is the most popular crater in Tanzania. It has a forested rim and a grassland crater floor, ideal for spotting elephants.

Whilst wildlife viewing is great all year, the wet season is more beautiful with lush vegetation. But the long grass can make wildlife viewing more difficult. The crater itself gets crowded all year and the entrance fee is quite high.

Lake-Manyara-Pink-flamingos

Pink flamingos enjoying Lake Manyara

What can I do at Lake Manyara National Park?

There are numerous things you can do at Lake Manyara National Park like canoe safaris, night drives to view the wildlife or taking an enjoyable walk along the famous Treetop walkway.

Small yet bountiful, Lake Manyara National Park is at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. The park has a diverse habitat, from the alkaline lake to the grassy floodplains and acacia woodland. The stunning groundwater forest is home to troops of blue monkeys and olive baboons. And let’s not forget the Majo Moto hot springs.

Whilst the wildlife is not as prolific as in some other parks, there is a large elephant population and tree-climbing lions, who are hard to spot. Other wildlife includes buffalo, giraffes, and several species of antelope.

Wildlife viewing and birdwatching are good all year, which makes the park crowded and pricey. To avoid the afternoon rush, enjoy a morning safari instead.

kilimanjaro safari tanzania

An elephant in the dense vegetation of Tarangire National Park

What can I do at Tarangire National Park?

There numerous things you can do at Tarangire National Park like night safaris, viewing the elephant herds, visiting the iconic baobab trees, and enjoying some tranquil birdwatching.

Like Serengeti, Tarangire experiences seasonal migrations. As water sources dry up from June to October, animals congregate around them in large numbers, offering a viewing of all the major safari animals in one spot.

The Tarangire River gets very crowded with wildlife, attracting many of the 300+ elephants.

There are huge baobab trees and even a seasonal swamp network. Other habitats include acacia shrubs and woodlands. The park also provides opulent birdwatching. Due to dense vegetation, many of the main predators are more difficult to spot here.

Tourists flock to the park from June to October. Those opting for morning or night drives should pack warm clothes. It gets very cold when the sun is down.

What can I do at Arusha National Park?

There numerous things you can do at Arusha National Park like canoeing, the popular walking safaris, birdwatching, during the wet season and even climbing Mount Meru.

Although it’s not as popular as other parks, it serves as an easy start to any safari. Contrary to the other parks, Arusha is best visited during the wet months, since the weather is more pleasant. Wildlife viewing is best and migratory birds are present.

Right at the base of  Mount Meru , Arusha has over 400 bird species and is wonderful for birdwatching. Buffalo, giraffe and antelope are also easily seen here, whilst the black-and-white colobus monkeys call the Arusha forests their home.

What can I do at Kilimanjaro National Park?

Apart from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro , you can do numerous things at Kilimanjaro National Park like viewing wildlife (elephants, buffalos, wildebeest and zebra), as well as doing some birdwatching during the serene wet months.

Kilimanjaro-National-Park

Kilimanjaro National Park

What are the best safari tours on the Northern Circuit?

The best and most popular safari tours on the Northern Circuit happen in national parks like Serengeti , Ngorongoro , Lake Manyara and Tarangire , which are near Mount Kilimanjaro. Tourists tend to go on combined safari tours through the Northern Circuit and often add Arusha National Park, Kilimanjaro National Park, and even some of the famous southern national parks across in the border in Kenya like Masai Mara .

The hotels and parks often make travel agencies and their tours a priority. This is why booking with a reputable safari company is the best option. It is more difficult to book accommodation and tours on your own.

Where to stay?  Here are 7 of my favourite accommodation options for Tanzanian safaris:

  • Ngorongoro Crater Serena Safari Lodge   (see reviews)
  • Tarangire Baobab Tented Camp
  • Serengeti Ole Serai Luxury Camp
  • Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge   (see reviews)
  • Selous Africa Safari Camp (near Mtemere main gate and airstrip)
  • Sunset Vista Hotel (in Kigoma and close to Gombe)
  • Serengeti Mawe Camp

See more  Northern Tanzanian safari accommodation options .

How much does a Northern Circuit Safari cost?

An excellent question. Northern Circuit Safaris typically cost anywhere between $1,300-$9,400 per person per day . Safari prices can also vary widely based on the number of people and accommodation choices (from cosy lodges to 5-star luxury options ). Plus, there's the number of days you go on safari for that you should also take into account.

Below is a handy table outlining Northern Circuit Safari costs, ranging from budget, mid-range and luxury safari tours:

Please note: These prices are estimates for a 2-person safari tour and indicative of typical itineraries for Northern Circuit private safaris. Tour operators sometimes mix and match itineraries in different ways. If you join a group safari or travel as a group on safari, then it will be cheaper than the above costs.

See our guides on  safari costs and budget safaris for more details.

What parks can I visit in the Southern Circuit?

There are four parks you can visit in the Southern Circuit: Selous, Nyerere, Ruaha and Mikumi.  There are lots of specialised safari tours that you can during your visit to these four southern jewels of unparalleled wilderness in Tanzania.

Selous-Game-Reserve-Hippos

What can I do in Selous Game Reserve?

There are several things you can do in  Selous Game Reserve  like boat safaris, walking safaris, fly-camping or simply sleeping out in the wilderness. Selous is a large park servicing dry season travellers.

What can I do in Nyerere National Park?

There are several things you can do in Nyerere National Park like game drives, walking safaris, and boat trips. Nyerere is located on the the Rufiji River and touring the park usually takes 2 to 3 days. The Rufiji River attracts lots of animals. It’s not uncommon to spot lions lazing on the shore.

Ruaha-National-Park

What can I do in Ruaha National Park?

There are several things you can do in Ruaha National Park like viewing the diverse wildlife. The endangered wild dogs are common in this park, especially in the mornings. Lions and elephants are numerous and easily tracked. The park is also home to rare antelope species such as sable, roan, and kudu. It takes about 2 to 3 days to go on a safari tour through Ruaha.

What can I do in Mikumi National Park?

There are several things you can do in Mikumi National Park like viewing unique wildlife. The dry months offer the best game viewing opportunities. The hippo pools make fantastic photos and allow for great birdwatching. In the open grassy plains, you can see buffalo, impala, wildebeest and zebra. Mikumi is accessible from Dar es Salaam and makes for a great weekend safari since this tour usually takes about 1 to 2 days. It usually forms part of a tour en route to Nyerere.

Which tour? Here are 5 of my favourite Southern Tanzanian safaris:

  • Nyerere Boat Safari (3 days)
  • Budget Ruaha Wildlife Safari (incl. Mikumi) (5 days)
  • Southern Big Five Safari (6 days)
  • Best of Selous, Mikumi and Ruaha Safari (8 days)
  • Epic Ruaha Adventure Safari (incl. Mikumi and Selous  (9 days)

See more  Ruaha and  Selous safari deals.

How long does a Western Circuit Safari usually take?

A Tanzania safari in the western circuit usually takes about one week. This is because tourists often do specialised safari tours like wildlife trekking, which can take several days to track and view wildlife throughout the parks.

What parks can I visit in the Western Circuit?

The main parks you can visit in the Western Circuit are Mahale, Gombe and Katavi. These parks are famous for their large chimpanzee communities and buffalo herds.

Chimpanzee

What are Mahale Mountains and Gombe National Park most famous for?

That's easy. Mahale Mountains and Gombe National Park are most famous for their chimpanzee trekking. Tanzania is one of the best places in the world to track these primates. For safety reasons, you can only track habituated chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Chimpanzees are not the only primates in this forest though. Other primates include the red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, red colobus monkey, and the olive baboon.

Mahale and Gombe are located on one of Africa’s Great Lakes, Lake Tanganyika , which is the longest freshwater lake in the world, and the second deepest. If chimpanzee trekking is not for you, you can always go snorkelling and view the diverse aquatic wildlife species instead.

These parks are very secluded throughout the year and a safari in either Mahale or Gombe takes between 2 and 5 days.

Which tour?  Here are 3 of my favourite Gombe and Mahale safaris I highly recommend:

  • Budget Chimpanzee Safari  (2 days)
  • Gombe Chimpanzee Tour  (4 days)
  • Mahale Chimpanzee Tracking Adventure  (4 days)

See more  Western Tanzania safari deals.

What can I do in Katavi National Park?

There are several things you can do in  Katavi National Park like enjoying excellent wildlife viewing in the dry months. Katavi has an amazing wilderness appeal and one of the largest buffalo herds in the world. The hippo pods are particularly easy to see here too. The pods tend to gather together during the dry months. You might also encounter some rare sable and roan antelope during your visit. A Katavi safari takes between 2 to 5 days.

Tanzania vs Kenya : Which is the better safari destination?

Generally speaking, Tanzania Safaris are more popular and the better safari destination in contrast with Kenya. This has to do with several factors like size and geography. Tanzania is bigger than Kenya, which means Tanzania has more tourist spots to visit like Serengeti for the Great Wildebeest Migration, Kilimanjaro for mountain trekking and safaris , and Zanzibar for a combined safari and beach holiday .

Nonetheless, Kenya and Tanzania are great safari destinations in their own right. The main differences are that Kenya is less visited than Tanzania, making Kenya a much cheaper safari experience.

Read more in our guides on the best times of year to visit Tanzania and Kenya and choosing between a Tanzanian or Kenyan safari .

Some major highlights of a Tanzania Safari are:

  • The Wildebeest Migration
  • The Big Five, including tree climbing lions in Lake Manyara
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Serengeti – a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Chimpanzee trekking in Gombe and Mahale
  • Tropical  beaches  in  Zanzibar  with their  perfect weather  (after your safari experience)

What are some Kenya Safari highlights?

Some major highlights of a Kenya Safari are:

  • The Great Rift Valley
  • Mount Kenya
  • Flamingoes at Lake Nakuru
  • Coastal beaches around Mombasa
  • Arguably the best birdwatching in Africa

What are Tanzania’s vaccination requirements?

Tanzania has several vaccination requirements, particularly for malaria. Malaria is a risk in most Tanzanian parks, especially during the rainy months from November to May. We recommend taking malaria medication but consult your doctor first. There are few exceptions such as Ngorongoro Crater and Mount Kilimanjaro. The higher altitudes are generally safe from malaria.

Consult your travel doctor/travel clinic about which  vaccinations you will need for Tanzania . Alternatively, check out the Tanzania section on the  NHS Fit for Travel site  or the  CDC .

You can find the latest information on the Coronavirus in Tanzania  here .

Do I need travel insurance for Tanzania?

Travel insurance is not mandatory but it’s always a good idea to have basic insurance cover. Tanzania and its parks are safe safari destinations, but accidents can happen at any time. More common travel insurance claims relate to lost baggage, and flight and tour cancellations. Your insurance should have medical, repatriation, and emergency coverage, among others. If you are also climbing Kilimanjaro, you will need to add the specialist activity, “hiking up to 6,000m” to your insurance.

We recommend World Nomads for your East African travel insurance needs. Get a quick quote below.

I hope you enjoyed this article on Tanzania Safaris! With so many national parks to choose from with affordable tour packages, you won't have any trouble planning and enjoying an incredible East African safari experience .

6 Days Climbing via Umbwe Route + 2 Nights Hotel Stay

The Umbwe Route is steeper and shorter than the Machame Route. Once at the Barranco Hut you continue on with the other Machame hikers. The descent is down the Mweka trail. Since it is a very short and direct route, it is not recommended for people with little altitude experience

Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar

Last minute Safari from Zanzibar is one thing we do best! With more people booking their Zanzibar beach vacations online the need for Tanzania safaris that start from Zanzibar Island came up more and more and that is why we decided to introduce our safari packages that start from Zanzibar. It is clear that Zanzibar is an island and it is known more for its beautiful white beaches and not much of wildlife safari goes on in the island though the island boasts of a wildlife area known as the Jozani forest, which is famous for its endemic red colobus monkeys. Our safaris from Zanzibar therefore mostly take you to the proper national parks of mainland Tanzania where you can explore the famous hot spots of Northern Tanzania safari Circuit or the nearby Southern Tanzania Safari circuit.

What’s Next for Jane Goodall? An Immersive Spectacle in Tanzania.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream” is going up in East Africa, where visitors can experience the primatologist’s scientific breakthroughs (complete with termite mound).

Close up photo of the 90-year-old face of the primatologist Jane Goodall.

By Ralph Blumenthal

Are you ready for the Jane Goodall Experience?

It’s getting ready for you.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream,” an immersive spectacle by former Walt Disney Imagineers and African artisans celebrating the groundbreaking English primatologist and environmental activist, is taking form in a cultural complex in Tanzania.

Its debut, in the safari gateway of Arusha, between Mount Kilimanjaro and Serengeti National Park , is planned around World Chimpanzee Day, July 14, 2025 — 65 years since Goodall, then a 26-year-old novice researcher chaperoned by her mother, landed at the Gombe forest reserve to begin her field work for the anthropologist Louis Leakey .

Within months she upended scientific doctrine by observing an adult male chimp she called David Greybeard raid a termite mound, stripping leaves from a hollow branch to extract and eat the insects. The making and using of tools was long thought a hallmark of humans.

Since then, the nonstop Goodall, who turned 90 on April 3 during a typically exhausting American tour, has been lionized (or aped) in books and movies. She’s a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a United Nations Messenger of Peace. And champion of a global crusade of young people and celebrities from Prince Harry to Leonardo DiCaprio fighting deforestation, climate change, pollution and factory farming.

Her nonprofit Jane Goodall Institute in the U.S. is projected to raise $30 million this year, with additional millions raised by the other 25 chapters worldwide, a spokesman said. Her youth movement, Roots and Shoots, is operating in 70 countries.

But she has never been presented like this — in an immersive tribute by African artists and Disney veterans. Disney has called Imagineering the “blending of creative imagination with technical know-how.” But “Dr. Jane’s Dream” is not a Disney project; rather, it taps into storytelling techniques by some of its former innovators.

At “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” Goodall said in New York last week, “There’s a tent where my mom and I were and two little peepholes looking out into the world of the chimps.” Visitors will be challenged. “They go into this dream world and are going to have to investigate. It’s like an adventure.”

Goodall is now on one of her globe-circling jaunts that keep her on the road some 300 days a year. She flew in from the West Coast at the end of March and after Canada and a few days back home in her native Bournemouth on the English Channel, she is booked to Europe, Africa, Australia, South America and Asia.

Since Jan. 12, she calculated, she has slept in her own bed five nights.

On April 2, Goodall was on East 54th Street at the Hotel Elysée with its Monkey Bar — a coincidence, she insisted — along with the fact that her top floor suite had been the last abode of the playwright Tennessee Williams, who died there in 1983 at 71, choking on the cap of a bottle of barbiturates.

Her latest project, “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” is unfolding at the Arusha Cultural Heritage Center, opened in 1994 by Saifudin Khanbhai, whose great-grandfather from India established a trading outpost in British colonial Tanganyika in the 1800s.

Khanbhai offered Goodall a location on the five-acre heritage site, amid a complex of half a dozen buildings and four huts displaying the work of some 3,000 artists and jewelers and showcasing the region’s unique blue gemstone, Tanzanite.

“We just connected so well,” Khanbhai said in an interview. “I’m a man of chemistry. If it works it works.”

Her building’s shell of round drumlike forms is already up, with the interior exhibits coming over the next year.

“Basically, she is getting the deep storytelling, design and immersiveness of Disney Imagineering because — well, we adore Jane,” said Tom Acomb, an architect with his own firm, AOA, and a former Imagineer who teamed up with colleagues including Joe Rohde , creator of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Florida, to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars of free design services for “Dr. Jane’s Dream.”

But Acomb said, “Disney has nothing to do with the project, nor is any technology of theirs deployed in any way. What is in the mix is a process — the process that was unique to Disney Imagineering’s ability to tell a story.” He said they still did support work for Disney when called upon.

The idea, Rohde explained, was to create “much more of an experience center than an expository center.”

“What we’re trying to do,” he added, “is sort of take all the feelings and emotions that made Jane Goodall Jane Goodall and transfer that into a series of objects and encounters.”

It was not so much “about” Goodall, he noted, as “feeling her.”

He said it would feature a kiosk with a recording of Goodall translating chimp cries into English; a ceiling of 800 leaflike tiles painted by various African artists, models of animals wrapped in information about them (requiring close study by visitors, just as Goodall had to closely study her subjects); and elaborately carved and painted tree trunks in a style of artmaking called Makonde .

And, of course, the famous termite mound.

“Rather than just telling people that this is the way chimps fish for food,” Rohde said, “we want to compel people to do something like what the chimps do — use these little probes to stimulate something within the termite mound. You’re not learning about what chimps do — you’re learning what they do.

“It’s a very Jane Goodall thing.”

To keep “Dr. Jane’s Dream" maintainable locally, it will limit fancy technology, and allow for improvisation, Rohde said.

“It’s going to be what it becomes as the artists make it.”

Born in London in 1934, Goodall grew up cherishing animals, even, as a not-yet-2-year-old, taking earthworms to bed with her. Her mother, Vanne, convinced her that the worms would do better in the ground. At 4½ she lost herself in the henhouse trying to figure out where eggs came from.

Her parents separated when she was little and, amid Nazi bombings, she relocated with her mother and younger sister to her grandmother’s home in Bournemouth. The first book she read was “The Story of Dr. Dolittle,” about a country physician who talks to the animals. Another early book, “Tarzan of the Apes” left her jealous, she remembers: “He marries the wrong Jane.”

Set on visiting Africa, Goodall saved her waitressing money and, at 23 in 1957, sailed to Kenya where, though lacking a college degree, she sought out Leakey who with his wife, Mary, was excavating early human fossils in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.

One day at the site, out walking with another assistant, Gillian Trace, and the Leakeys’ two protective Dalmatians, Toots and Bottom-Biter, Goodall noticed they were being trailed by a young male lion. The dogs, off leash, were busy chasing a mouse.

“Gillian wanted to hide in the vegetation at the bottom of the gorge,” she recalled last week. “I said no, the lion would know where we are, we won’t know where the lion is. We have to climb up on the plains so the lion could see us. I had this firm belief that animals wouldn’t hurt us if we are not a threat to them.”

Goodall said she was less worried about the lion than coming back to Mary Leakey without the Dalmatians.

Afterward, Louis Leakey, impressed, offered her a job studying chimpanzees for clues to man’s earliest ancestors. She became one of his three ape mentees, “the trimates,” who also included Dian Fossey on gorillas and Birutė Galdikas on orangutans. Fossey would be murdered in Rwanda in 1985.

Goodall returned to England but sailed back to Africa with her mother in 1960 to begin her research in Gombe, on Lake Tanganyika.

Alone in the jungle with only their cook, both were felled by malaria. Her mother nearly died. “We just lay in our beds and handed the thermometer back and forth,” Goodall recalled. Somehow, without quinine, they recovered.

She tried repeatedly to make contact with the chimps but they remained aloof, as recorded by an old movie camera she propped up in a tree fork.

Until, after nearly four months, David Greybeard let her get close enough as he made his tool of the tree branch.

“It was held in the left hand, poked into the ground, and then removed coated with termites,” she recorded in her field book. “The straw was then raised to the mouth and the insects picked off with the lips, along the length of the straw, starting in the middle.”

Goodall said she knew immediately that her breakthrough would thrill Leakey. He cabled back: “Now we must redefine ‘tool,’ redefine ‘man’ or accept chimpanzees as human.”

But Goodall also observed the primates in warfare and cannibalism — along with manifestations of empathy and communal rearing of offspring orphaned by poachers. At a waterfall, she observed chimps dancing as if in religious awe.

Sergio Almécija , senior research scientist in primates and human evolution at the American Museum of Natural History, said Goodall revolutionized the way we understand primates and other animals — “like the transition from radio to color TV.”

Starting in 1961, Goodall returned periodically to Cambridge for what became four years of doctoral studies in ethology. “I was told you must focus on feeding behavior or maternal behavior, but not everything,” she recalled.

She focused on everything. She also rejected complaints that she was giving names, not just numbers, to her chimp subjects and recognizing their humanlike traits.

When National Geographic sent a renowned Dutch wildlife photographer, Baron Hugo van Lawick, to Gombe in 1962 to document an irresistible story — a young Englishwoman among the apes — a romance blossomed. They married in London in 1964 and had a child, Hugo Eric Louis, nicknamed Grub. (Now a house builder in Africa and Latin America, he has two sons and a daughter, Goodall’s grandchildren, who work on some of her projects.)

A slowdown in assignments sent van Lawick in search of work in the Serengeti and he and Goodall divorced in 1974. A year later she married the Tanzanian national parks director, Derek Bryceson . He died of cancer in 1980, when Goodall was 46.

In 1986, she helped organize a conference in Chicago, and was shocked to learn how deforestation and pollution were decimating animal populations.

“I went to the conference as a scientist and I left as an activist,” she said.

After revelations of terrible conditions at the Brazzaville zoo in the Republic of Congo, she persuaded the American oil company Conoco to help build a chimp sanctuary in that country. She convinced leading research laboratories like Harvard’s that chimps, after all, made poor models for medical experimentation to benefit humans. Many long-captive animals were released to sanctuaries (though ape-trafficking remained rampant).

She widened her focus to human behavior as well, and became a vegan. “How can we even save the precious chimpanzees,” she asked, “when people all around are struggling to survive?”

Some of her favorite stuffed animals that she carries around in her hand luggage sat last week on a mantle in her New York hotel room: Mr. H, a monkey from a blinded United States Marine, Gary Haun, who became a proficient magician, skier and sky diver; Pigcasso, a South African pig taught to create artworks with a paintbrush in her mouth; an octopus from the movie “My Octopus Teacher”; and Rattie, an African pouched rat trained to detect land mines.

Two other items were away on display at a National Geographic Museum traveling exhibition called “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall” — a piece of the Berlin Wall and a limestone rock from Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island prison.

All symbols, Goodall says, of her mantra — hope.

“I’m seeing humanity as at the mouth of a very long dark tunnel,” she said, “and right at the end is a little star — that’s hope. But in order to get there we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and climb under and crawl over all the obstacles that lie in the path, like climate change, and loss of biodiversity. And a very important one is poverty. We must alleviate poverty because really poor people destroy the environment to survive.”

In her hotel suite, the living room lights and brass chandelier were lit. A photo of Tennessee Williams glistened in a vitrine.

Goodall was in a bedroom, resting her eyes from her travels and lectures into the spotlights. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the chandelier began to sway.

Goodall didn’t seem surprised to hear of it. Once, she said, staying in another suite on the same floor, she had seen an apparition.

Did she believe in a hereafter?

There’s either nothing or there’s something, she said. Finding out the answer would be “the next great adventure.”

  • Family Safari Escapes: Discovering the Best National Parks in Tanzania

Planning a Family Escapade in Tanzania — A vast country, much like the vastness of its national parks.

Moreover, it is a top destination for incredible family safaris. Where families can enjoy the thrill of adventure and become one with nature & wildlife, the different regions will offer you as many surprises as each other.

During your family trip to Tanzania, you have a golden chance to immerse in the beauty of the wild and forge lasting connections with the natural world. How exciting is that?

The Marvels of Tanzania’s National Parks:

Few places can offer such varied and intensely beautiful scenery as Tanzania’s National Parks. Tanzania has 22 national parks managed by TANAPA(Tanzania National Parks Authority), including renowned names like Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, harboring species from African elephants to elusive leopards and giraffes.

These parks are wildlife sanctuaries that significantly conserve the country’s rich biodiversity, containing more than 20% of Africa’s large mammal population.

Also contributing to Tanzania’s economy through eco-tourism by attracting global visitors to an annual spectacle involving millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other animals migrating journeying across the plains, sustaining a delicate balance of predator-prey life chain and serving as a natural marvel.

Navigating Family Safari Planning:

Tarangire national park , serengeti national park, ngorongoro conservation area, ruaha national park, selous game reserve, mount kilimanjaro national park, faqs about tanzania and its national parks.

Ensuring everything goes smoothly for a successful family adventure where everyone has a fantastic time.

But how do you make it awesome?

First, consider when you want to go on your safari adventure. You’ll want to aim for the dry seasons, usually between June & October or from December to Feb. During these times, the weather is just right, and the animals are near water sources, making it easier to spot them.

Now, about the weather in the big parks up north, like Serengeti, Tarangire, and Manyara have a warm high-altitude climate about 1,500 meters above sea level. Hence, it’s pretty warm but not too hot. Jan, Feb, and March are the hottest months which could be perfect if you see animals in action during the warmer times. But watch out for April – it’s the rainiest month. On the flip side, August is the driest.

So we’ve got the timing down. Let’s move on to something more important: keeping everyone healthy and comfy. You’ll want to sort out your transportation and make sure you’ve got any needed health precautions covered. This might include vaccinations or medications to stay safe and sound during your adventure.

And speaking of adventure, you’ll want to ensure you’ve got the right tour operator and safari guide to make your experience top-notch. Safari companies are experts at ensuring families like yours have a fantastic time. They know how to plan things just right so that everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, has a blast and creates memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Tanzania’s Best National Parks For Family Safaris

Tarangire is recognizable because it is made up of forests of acacias and giant baobabs, with huge areas of marshland. During the dry season, you can admire beautiful landscapes. The land is red and dusty & the grass is parched and yellow, and the Tarangire River is very narrow.

On the contrary, the plains are green during the rainy season, with an imposing river and many animals regaining their strength.

This park’s no joke – it’s 2,600 square kilometers of animal-packed adventure, especially between August and January. And here’s the scoop: Tarangire is the place to be if you’re looking for critters that are a bit trickier to find in other northern parks.

Come June, this place will become the hangout spot for elks, oryxes, elephants, wildebeests, and zebras. They all gather around the river and the marshes to quench their thirst. And you won’t believe your eyes when you see elephants digging for water underground, using their hefty paws! It’s quite a sight to see!

Let’s get one fact straight: Serengeti’s wet season means fewer animals, except in the south, where the real action happens.

Driving in from Ngorongoro, it’s like stepping into a grassy savannah sprinkled with kopjes – those fancy granite rock formations. Venture a bit, and you’ll hit greener acacia savannah. Head north, and it’s all about hills. On the flip side, the Western Corridor, crisscrossed by rivers, spreads out to Lake Victoria.

May to June is a show-stopping period. That’s when the jaw-dropping wildebeest migration hits the stage. Imagine over a million of these creatures embarking on a great migration over 800 km from Tanzania to Kenya’s Maasai Mara , perfectly in tune with the rain’s rhythm. A staggering 2 million wildebeests and 300,000 zebras gather for a parade, making herds that stretch as far as 40 km.

Serengeti isn’t just a park; it’s a world-class zoo sprawled over 14,763 km² and home to Big 5 “Lions, leopards, elephants, black rhinos, and buffaloes”.

Ngorongoro is known for its volcano, gigantic crater, and thriving wildlife scene. The Ngorongoro Crater Protected Area is over 2 million years old and around 20 km in diameter. Also, the historic Olduvai Gorge is just 40km from the crater, where traces of humanity’s earliest days are found.

In Ngorongoro, prepare for a rich and diverse range of creatures. The Big 5, antelopes, cheetahs, and endangered black rhino – we’re talking around 30,000 animals. And also have over 400 bird species, including the elegant pink flamingos. Keep your eyes open for jackals, hyenas, and cheetahs.

And if you plan a family safari around July-August, you’ll enjoy some cool temperatures on the caldera’s edges. But remember, Ngorongoro is not only just a crater; it’s part of the grand Ngorongoro Protected Area, And it’s quite the tourism hub, hosting around 400,000 visitors annually.

The Ruaha River sustains the diverse animal community in Ruaha Park, which flows through its heart. This thriving community includes African elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, lions, hyenas, cheetahs, leopards, and the world’s third-largest population of wild dogs.

Ruaha is a hidden gem, not famous like other parks, but its reputation is rising. It remains a safari secret. You won’t have to battle huge crowds here, even during the peak/high season. Plus, it’s budget-friendly compared to more popular parks like the Serengeti.

And here you can also go for the walking safaris. But remember minimum age required for a walking safari is 16.

Nyerere National Park, previously called Selous Game Reserve, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Africa’s largest national park.

You can witness the unusual annual elephant migration as thousands of these majestic elephants cross the river. Also, you can take part in walking safaris, spot African wild dogs, and go on Elephant Migration Boat Safaris for memorable adventures.

Plan your visit between late June and October for prime wildlife viewing or from November to March to enjoy bird watching. Wildlife in the park ranges from elephants, African wild dogs, sables, kudus, &  waterbucks to hippos and crocodiles.

Nyerere National Park is a haven of nature and offers easy access to attractions like Zanzibar and Dar Es Salaam. It’s an excellent destination for an incredible adventure.

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park stands as a remarkable destination for an unforgettable family safari. Encompassing an expansive area of approximately 755 square miles, the park in Northeastern Tanzania shares a border with Kenya.

The park’s star attraction, Mount Kilimanjaro, is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Known as the rooftop of Africa, it is the highest mountain (freestanding) in the world. Families need not be seasoned climbers to experience its splendor. Guided walks along various trails allow all family members to soak in the breathtaking scenery and the stunning views of the surrounding plains.

Besides its majestic mountain, the national park boasts a diverse array of animal species. Families can catch glimpses of elusive leopards, playful colobus monkeys, as well as antelopes, gazelles, lions, rhinos, and elephants.

Bird enthusiasts will be captivated by the dazzling spectacle of migratory birds, their vibrant colors brightening the park. Non-migratory species, including soaring eagles and graceful flamingos, grace the skies around Kilimanjaro, creating a spectacle that is truly unique.

The park is also home to a variety of activities and attractions. While some trails are designed for more experienced hikers, others are tailored to casual walkers or wheelchair access. Families can explore an array of caves, visit traditional villages, enjoy cultural tours, or just relax in one of the many lodges located within the park.

Tanzania is home to 22 national parks. Each park offers visitors a chance to experience the country’s unique wildlife, landscapes, and culture. The most famous of all the parks is Kilimanjaro National Park – famed for its iconic mountain peak – while others such as Serengeti National Park are renowned for their vast savannah plains and provide one of the best opportunities for game viewing.

The beauty of Tanzania’s parks is hard to measure. Each park has something unique to offer and is worth exploring. However, many visitors cite Serengeti National Park as the most beautiful. It is renowned for its breathtaking views, abundant wildlife, and wide-open plains.

Visitors can also explore Tarangire National Park for its acacia-filled savannah and incredible bird watching. Another popular destination is Selous Game Reserve, which is home to the world’s largest population of African elephants. Ultimately, visitors should explore each park for themselves to determine what makes it most beautiful.

The largest national park in Tanzania is Nyerere National Park, previously called Selous Game Reserve. Spanning over 55,000 square kilometers (21,000 sq mi), it is the largest protected wildlife area in Africa and one of the largest unfenced reserves in the world.

The park is known for its abundant African wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, antelope, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and more. Nyerere National Park offers a unique experience for visitors, where they can immerse themselves in the untouched African bush.

The least visited national park in Tanzania is Ruaha National Park. Located in south-central Tanzania, Ruaha is a relatively remote and untouched park that offers visitors an opportunity to explore the vast wilderness of East Africa.

The best time to travel to Tanzania is during the dry season, which typically runs from late June through October. During this period, temperatures are mild and the chances of rain are low, making it perfect for safaris and exploring the country’s national parks.

The warmest months are December through February, but these can also be very wet and humid. April and May are also good months to visit, since temperatures are more moderate.

The best time of year to go on safari in Tanzania is during the dry season, which typically runs from late June through October. This period offers the best combination of ideal weather conditions and prime game viewing opportunities. Days are hot but not too humid, while evenings can be cool.

Wildlife sightings are more frequent during this period due to less vegetation cover and the animals coming to the waterholes more often. Additionally, the dry season coincides with calving season for antelope, which makes it a great time to view baby wildebeests and zebras!

Tanzania is a very popular and sought-after destination for tourists due to its rich history, diverse culture, stunning landscapes, and unparalleled wildlife. It is home to 22 national parks and numerous game reserves that are filled with an amazing array of animals such as lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffalos, cheetahs,  and more.

The country also boasts some of the world’s highest mountain peaks, including Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s tallest peak. Additionally, Tanzania is renowned for its welcoming people and vibrant cultures. From traditional Swahili villages to bustling cities like Dar es Salaam, there is something here for everyone!

It really depends on what you want to do and see! If you’re just looking for a quick getaway, then three to five days will give you enough time to explore the country’s main attractions. However, if you’d like to go on safari, or dive deep into its history and culture, then seven days or longer is recommended. There’s so much to discover and experience in Tanzania, you won’t want your time there to end!
