King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Announce 2023 Tour Dates and Concert Film Screenings
By Madison Bloom
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have announced a slate of 2023 tour dates, as well as screenings of their 2020 concert film titled Chunky Shrapnel . The band’s USA Residency Tour will wind through United States starting in June of next year. Prior to that, they will play in their native Australia, as well as New Zealand, a number of European cities, and more. Find their full schedule below.
Chunky Shrapnel was directed by John Angus Stewart and originally received a livestreamed premiere in 2020. The film was recorded on the band’s 2019 tour of Europe. “ Chunky Shrapnel was made for the cinema but as both concerts and films are currently outlawed, it feels poetic to release a concert-film digitally right now,” frontman Stu Mackenzie said at the time (referring to pandemic -related lockdowns). On December 7, multiple screenings of the film will be held nationwide, distributed to cinemas by Abramorama. A full list of Chunky Shrapnel screenings can be found here .
The highly prolific King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have released several albums this year, most recently, the trio of Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava ; Laminated Denim ; and Changes.

UPDATE: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Announce 2023 U.S. Residency Tour [Video]
Eclectic Australian psych-rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have announced a 2023 North American “residency tour” featuring multi-night runs in several cities. A press release announcing the tour notes that these will be the band’s only U.S. performances in 2023.
The newly announced run of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard U.S. tour dates will begin with a run of shows at Pelham, TN’s The Caverns featuring two nights in the venue’s famed underground space (June 1st, 2nd) and one at the complex’s larger, above-ground The Caverns Amphitheater (June 3rd).
[UPDATE 11/21/22]: Following the rapid sell-out of the three initially announced King Gizzard dates at The Caverns, the band has added a fourth show in Pelham, TN set to take place at The Caverns Amphitheater on June 4th. Tickets for the newly added 6/4 date at The Caverns Amphitheater go on sale on Monday, November 21st at 12:00 p.m. CT. For ticketing information, head here .
From there, King Giz will return to Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre for a three-show run. Unlike the band’s Red Rocks stint in 2022, which featured three “marathon” concerts spread over three nights, the 2023 Red Rocks run will feature a regular-length show on Wednesday, June 7th followed by two separately ticketed shows (early and late) on Thursday, June 8th.
Next, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s 2023 residency tour will move to Chicago, IL for three consecutive nights at the recently opened The Salt Shed on June 11th, 12th, and 13th. The band will then head west that weekend for a three-night run at Carnation, WA’s Carnation Farms (6/16, 6/17, 6/18). Finally, the tour will wrap up on Wednesday, June 21st with a three-hour “marathon set” at the historic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angels, CA.
“USA, we love you,” the band said in a tour announcement post on social media. “So much so we’re coming back as soon as we can. We all waited so long for our last lap around the country it feels like a such a wild and exciting privilege to be coming back so soon. We like to keep things interesting, different, fun and unexpected for us but also for you, our fans. So we’ve hand picked some really unique venues around the country to camp out in for a few nights. Set up shop and really get to know the place. Yep, it’s a RESIDENCY tour. Rocks, Farms, Caves and Salt Sheds. Sounds like an album title? Maybe one day.”
In addition to revealing their 2o23 U.S. tour plans, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have announced a number of theatrical screenings of their 2020 live concert film, Chunky Schrapnel . The feature-length film, directed by John Angus Stewart and distributed to cinemas via Abramorama , brings audiences onto the stages of the band’s 2019 U.K. and Europe tour. Screenings will predominantly take place one night only on December 7th. A full list of cities and dates can be found here .

Great show at Rebel Club on August 25, 2019! Wonderful display of talented bands from “down under” Opening act #1 was ORB who were as good as their sound system would let them. I’d like to see them do a longer set to get a better idea of how they compare to their excellent studio work. #2 opening band was Stonefield, a power-rock band consisting of four sisters who really got the crowd head-banging and warmed up for King Gizzard. The headliners finally made their way on stage and proceeded to send the crowd into a moshing frenzy with music from their latest album Infest the Rats Nest. They played an eclectic set list, that made its way through their huge back catalogue of albums and was able to change up the pace now and then to give people a chance to catch their collective breaths. Epic drum solos from Eric and Michael were definitely one of the highlights of the night. The only thing missing was a solo from Ambrose, but with so many songs to choose from you can’t have everything. I found the background video show a bit distracting as I was up in the Mezzanine area, but all-in-all a great concert by a great band! Come back to Canada soon!!

This was a great gig. The support act (a three-man band (from Spain? called Los Padres?)) came across like the Velvet Underground doing a set of Lovin' Spponful songs. They were ok, but more can't be said.
King Gizzard et al. were superb, though. I can't have been the only person wondering whether they would do their recent 'Nonagon Infinity' album end-to-end without a break (as it appears on the cd and streaming). They didn't, but split it into three parts, each three songs long. Between these three parts were numbers from their back-catalogue, like 'Trapdoor' (a lot less interesting live than in the studio version), 'Cellophane', etc. But the tracks from Nonagon Infinity were the standouts - the album is so utterly strong, almost from beginning to end. My favourite album of the year so far, really, and they did it justice. The crowd went mad and there was more crowd-surfing than I've seen in ages. I'd definitely go to see them again. By the time 'Robot stop' came round for the *second* time, I was just wishing they'd go through the whole album again (maybe not strictly *ad infinitum*, but for at least a couple more times!).
Always a crazy good time w these guys. Lots and lots of new material from Banana & Nonagon.... would've liked to hear a lot more old stuff as most of the new stuff blends together and sounds the same (sometimes intentionally)...
The band seems to be moving in a direction of the 2-3 power chord / song, "Street Fighter" music.... Since I've been seeing them back from the 12 bar bruise days, this was a bit disappointing since the Gizz I fell in love with flaunted their versatile sounds & abilities with songs ranging from Float Along and Mystery Jack to Hot Wax and It Got Old.
I've seen these guys ~5 times, and would not be itching to go back anytime soon if they keep playing in-and-out of nonagon.... it got old.
It was a clear evening with a chance of fireballs coming thorugh the speakers from the venue. The scorching heath of starting songs set the fans ablaze as they joined bodies and mind rushing the stage in form of a very tight mosh pit. Song after song we let our spirits escape our weak forms and forgot about fatigue and exhaustion. The band let us though a lot of different themes without losing that scorching energy which started the show. I didn’t want it to end ever, I could have stayed in that limbo for an eternity, listening to them play live. At the end, I heard all of my favorite songs, yet I didn’t hear all of my favorite songs... trust me, buy yourself a ticket and go see them live.
If a train departs Paris at 13:30 (Paris time), travelling at approximately 270km/h toward London, which is hosting a Melbourne earthquake in a kaleidoscopic venue in Hackney at 2pm (BST), what time will Mick finally arrive at the King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard gig?
But just in time to hear the double drums warm up my ears as I run towards the steamed windows of the swing doors separating the old, bald mortals drinking lagers from dirty glasses on a Monday afternoon and the space travelling Pied Pipers luring the children to their Nonagon Infinity.

Stunning, stunning, stunning and very, very hot. An absolutely brilliant gig and it was great to see the band occasionally, when the couple in front of me stopped holding up their smart phones and filming practically the whole event. They stopped briefly, well for approximately 90 seconds, when I said that I'd like to watch the band play live rather than through their devices, so that was rather irritating. More of a pain in fact, than the beer raining down on me from above now and again. Ban people filming on their devices at gigs I say! Bah humbug!
King Giz & The Liz Wiz are the biz. Live on stage, they deliver their jams, thrashes and meanderings in a show that surfs through their far-beyond-eclectic back catalogue in style.
What's incredible is just how locked-in and together the band are, regardless of the musical genre they're playing. Go see King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard for astounding musicianship, myriad musical stylings mashed through a psych rock prism, jolting time signature changes, trippy visuals and a sense that you're getting in touch with something transcendental.
From start to finish the entire show was a mosh pit and damn well good one too. The moment they started I swear the room temperature went up by 10 degrees from everyone going wild and letting loose.
At one point Stu crowd dived and was carried outside all the way to the beach and dunked in the water by fans. Great enough the rest of the band kept playing until he came back, five minutes or more later.
If you have the right crowd, their shows are amazing. You already know the music is going to be great live anyway
It was a great gig, but with one crucial flaw. The band played loads of their great numbers from across several of their electronic psych offerings, and they were generally excellent. The flaw was that the tour was called the 'Murder of the Universe' tour, and they played none of the material I've heard from the parts of that album that are on Spotify. That material, supposedly from its third disc, has been there for weeks, so why didn't they play it? Surely we should at least have been treated to 'Vomit Coffin'???!!!
I've been to a bunch of rockshows in my life, this was one of the best ones so far, top 3 hahaha!
Gizz (and Mild High Club) really now how to build tension, pace and give a show a really diverse taste. I had been anxiously awaiting their set-list and when i saw them bringing in regular and microtonal instruments i knew i'd be in for a real treat!
Sound quality was great, VJ'ing was amasing and the crowd was nuts! tons of good vibes.
To top it all off these duderinos can play like hell!

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announce 2023 tour dates with new album
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announce 2023 European and UK tour dates. They also reveal the new album ‘ Laminated Denim ‘ on October 12th, 2022. You can listen to the album and check out the King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard dates below!
This latest album has been released and includes two tracks, both albums of which are around 15 minutes long: ‘ The Land Before Timeland ‘ and ‘ Hypertension .’ ‘ Laminated Denim ‘ is a spiritual successor to the earlier album ‘ Made In Timeland ‘, which was also released physically in March of this year before releasing digitally yesterday with ‘ Laminated Denim ,’ check every detail about the album in our article.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will tour around Europe and the United Kingdom starting in March 2023. It comes after the band was forced to postpone more than a dozen shows earlier this year in order for vocalist Stu Mackenzie, who suffers from Crohn’s disease, to fly home to Australia for “urgent treatment.”
Besides tour dates, King Gizzard also shared this statement on Twitter for their new album:
“Like the last record, this one was created out of long improvised jams, but this time we also worked within the constraints of a ticking clock. We used the tick and the tock to create polyrhythms weave in and out of like skiers dancing down a slope.”
King Gizzard’s concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, originally planned for May 2020, were to use Made in Timeland as the interval music. King Gizzard wrote and out with ‘Made in Timeland’ on vinyl and released the record in small numbers after it canceled the Red Rocks performances owing to the pandemic. Then they composed Laminated Denim to serve as the music for their eventually held Red Rocks gigs earlier this week. Check the 2022 and 2023 tour dates below!

It comes to an end on June 21st with a three-hour marathon set at The Hollywood Bowl.
Check out their full itinerary below, including 2022 and 2023 dates in Europe. Tickets for the “North American Residency Tour” go on sale this Friday, November 18th at 1:00 p.m. ET via Ticketmaster . Book your seats here .
As for CHUNKY SHRAPNEL, the concert film was directed by John Angus Stewart, and a press release promised it would “Literally [bring] the audience onto the stages of their 2019 tour across Europe and the UK.” It airs in theaters around the world for one night only on December 7th, and tickets are available through the event website .
Last month, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard released three new albums: Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava , Laminated Denim , and Changes .

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard on the return of live music: “I cried walking off stage – just a little bit”
Ahead of a new year packed with a remix album and tour dates, frontman Stu Mackenzie talks the band’s 18th album ‘Butterfly 3000’ and why King Gizzard make dance music
“I feel like a lot of like my day-to-day existence is just trying to mitigate the anxiety that comes with being creative for a job,” begins Stu Mackenzie of psych-rock chameleons King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard . “Because it’s just a weird, unnatural thing to do. I try very hard to not make the best song I’ve ever made; it’s just too scary to me.”
Although working as a fairly autonomous group, the ’Gizz have a King: Mackenzie. He’s been poking his reptilian tongue out front as chief songwriter, vocalist and lead guitarist since they formed in 2010, all while chipping in on bass, keyboards, sitar and the flute, an instrument he taught himself for their acoustic record ‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon’.
That was their seventh album in three years. That number has since come to an astonishing 18 with the release of the group’s latest ‘Butterfly 3000’ , written and recorded during a global pandemic. That makes for a substantial oeuvre that must be nearly impossible to block from Mackenzie’s rear-view mirror.
King Gizzard started off as a ragtag bunch of mates from Deniliquin, Melbourne and Geelong who were asked to play a set at a party. They had to come up with a name on the spot. Mackenzie wanted Gizzard Gizzard, while another was fond of Jim Morrison’s nickname The Lizard King. They compromised.
From there, the band went on a tear that hasn’t let up. You name it, they’ve slayed it: Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, Meredith Music Festival (twice), even their own annual event, Gizzfest.
The outfit’s career path almost sounds like a dare. Stylistically, they’ve released ‘Eyes Like the Sky’, a spaghetti western audiobook; ‘Quarters’, containing four songs exactly 10 minutes 10 seconds long; and ‘Nonagon Infinity’, an infinitely looping album. King Gizzard may look like afterparty stayers but are more likely to flock to a studio for a late-night recording session.
Recommended
Now their shepherd is all grown up. Last year, Mackenzie joint-released a side project with his wife: “We had a baby girl, her name is Araminta,” he says over Zoom, his high cheekbones jutting even higher as he spells out her name slowly. “We call her Minty. She’s our hairless kitten, we already have two cats Gandalf and Gideon.”
“I was a drummer before I was a singer and I love the primal energy of dancing”
The COVID-19 enforced lockdowns sucked on many levels for King Gizzard, who are one of Australia’s hardest touring bands. But they also managed to start and finish a bunch of projects while the world grappled with the coronavirus. They released ‘Chunky Shrapnel’ , a hectic concert film shot by director John Angus Stewart with a handheld 16mm camera throughout Europe. They swapped song ideas through the internet and made two sister albums, ‘K.G.’ and ‘L.W.’ Both were microtonal records in the footsteps of 2017’s ‘Flying Microtonal Banana’.
The fifth thing they produced in this unsettling period (we’re including Minty) was ‘Butterfly 3000’, based on Mackenzie’s polymetric arpeggio demos. “These songs were made at, like, two in the morning looping a synth line in my bedroom using analogue stuff then I recorded with Ableton,” he says.
‘Butterfly 3000’ is the closest they’ve made to an all-out electronic dancefloor record; think Death From Above 1979 jamming to DFA Records barn-burners on a dreamy acid trip.
“I think of a lot of ’Gizz music as dance music, whether it’s ‘dance music’, or music that’s made to move your body to,” Mackenzie says, “And I think certain records we’ve made to dance in a certain space like maybe a mosh pit. I was a drummer before I was a singer and I love the primal energy of dancing. I’m a sucker for a boozy dancefloor.”
“I try very hard to not make the best song I’ve ever made; it’s just too scary to me”
‘Butterfly 3000’ happened while they were busy making other plans. “We wrote a couple of song in major key vibes and we knew it wouldn’t work on ‘Chunky Shrapnel’, which we were putting together. We had the song ‘Dreams’, a synth pop thing that was clearly wrong for it.
“We just accidentally made this music that felt like it warranted its own project. And ‘Shanghai’ came then ‘Black Hot Soup’ and ‘Ya Love’, and it felt like enough to hold a record and we should explore this concept super deeply.”
For the uninitiated, it can be intimidating to find an entry point to King Gizzard. ‘Butterfly 3000’ makes for an ideal starter, a torso-hijacking suite of 10 undulating boogies that do all the work for you.
‘Yours’ opens the album with a melodic come-hither synth line and then a rhythm section that scurries up like a dog greeting its owner. “It needed to feel bright and welcoming and warm because we’ve made a lot of dark records. We’ve made a lot of scary ones,” Mackenzie smirks.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have always been about the music, their personalities and private lives tangential, at best, to the band’s story. But the birth of Minty figured greatly in the making of their 18th studio album. “I definitely felt like I was in a cocoon before Minty was born,” Mackenzie says.
“A butterfly is just a beautifully easy, metaphorical creature with this bizarre and interesting life cycle,” he adds, miming one taking flight. “That was the central motif for the whole record. And we tried to use it in every song.”
That even applies to ‘Shanghai’, inspired by the time the band “ate hotpot and went insane” in the Chinese city. “We had actual fights with each other on the street, it was some kind of enlightening out of body experience where you, like, wake up the next morning, ‘Oh, I’ve changed, I’ve become a butterfly today’,” Mackenzie says, wide-eyed.
On ‘Butterfly 3000’, Mackenzie was wary of heavy-handed climate change messaging after 2019’s ‘Planet B’ where he gnashed: “ Only way through is colonisation / Acclimatisation / Population exodus / Monetisation .”
But Mackenzie did have anxiety he needed to mitigate: hence, a song ostensibly about ice caps melting titled ‘2.02 Killer Year’.
“This is one of the songs on the record that does have some form of a darker side to it,” he says. “I mean, there’s a lot of deeply anxious lyrics on this record but generally what we were trying to do was make something that felt good.”
Mackenzie sings: “ It’s coming up Beach Boys / The weather’s getting messed about / You better bring boards down / The waves are bigger than a house .”
He explains: “I wanted to do a satirical thing where, y’know, I’m singing about global warming, the tides are rising. Right, let’s all go surfing!”
If in doubt, paddle out.
“Exactly… just the absurdity of that.”
After what felt an age between gigs, King Gizzard were picked to headline the Play On Victoria show at Sidney Myer Music Bowl in October that celebrated the return of live music.
“That show felt surreal, it really did, it was so… normal,” he says, tilting his head. “It felt like five minutes had passed, but also 500 years simultaneously. I cried walking off stage – just a little bit.”
Now they’ve announced a loosey goosey New Year’s Festival in regional Victoria, King Gizzard’s Timeland , where they’ll play four sets in six hours. Then it’s on to 2022, when they’ll release their first-ever remix album ‘Butterfly 3001’ and start another madcap world tour , stopping at Lollapalooza Argentina and Brazil, Shaky Knees in US and All Together Now in Ireland.
“We love touring so much, these shows will be a release of adrenaline,” Mackenzie declares. “Burst the bubble of frustration. Do the thing we do. Full tilt. Bring it on.”
