Snorkeling Klein Curacao – Find the Best Spot and Don’t Puke

Snorkeling Klein Curacao is good if you know where to go and if the conditions cooperate. The good spot has some healthy corals, lots of fish in good variety, and nice clear water. The boat trip to Klein Curacao is worth it and a good way to spend a day. The small desert island lies six miles (9.7 km) southeast of Curacao and has a gorgeous half mile (0.8 km) long white sand beach.

There are a few different boat companies that will take you snorkeling Klein Curacao, from smaller private charter motor boats to large catamaran sailboats, to even larger passenger ferry sized boats.

Most boats do full day trips, but you can find half day ones too. Some of the companies have facilities on the island, like shade structures, chairs, fresh water shower, restroom, and an eating area. They may also provide masks and snorkels for your use.

Most outfits provide drinks and will also feed you both breakfast and lunch during their snorkeling Klein Curacao tour.

Pod of jumping dolphins seen from the boat on the way to Klein Curacao

Snorkeling Klein Curacao requires a two hour boat ride each way, across open ocean. So keep that in mind when considering the comfort of the boat you pick. Also we recommend that you watch the wind forecast and reserve your trip for a lower wind day. A windy day means rough, wavy water and on a day like that seasickness complete with puking is likely. And if you are prone to seasickness, take motion sickness medication or ginger early that morning for prevention.

Note: Our suggestions are based on knowledge of the area. We hope you find them helpful. You can help us if you use the link(s) below. We may make a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

We recommend checking out reviews of the tour companies you are considering on TripAdvisor .

A Klein Curacao snorkeling tour boat

If you take the full day tour you can take a break from snorkeling Klein Curacao and hike around to check out some of the other sights, too. There is an abandoned lighthouse worth walking to (which, from the water, has a decidedly phallic appearance, with its two houses, one on each side). There are also a couple of shipwrecks on the windward side of the island that are a sight to see, one big steel ship, and one large sailboat. Mostly the island is flat with very little vegetation, so you won’t miss much if you just decide to hang at the stunning beach and in the azure waters.

Water Entrance for Snorkeling Klein Curacao

The water entrance is in sand, with some small coral rubble and a short shelf to step down. Barefoot works for most people. Once you are in enough water to float, slip on your fins . Generally there are little to no waves because you are on the leeward side of the island. If the wind is coming from the west, you will want to plan your snorkeling Klein Curacao trip for another day.

Where to Snorkel

You can get in the water and snorkel anywhere on the leeward side of the island (the side protected from the wind and waves when the normal trade winds are blowing). Our boat guides told us the best place for snorkeling Klein Curacao was down the beach to the left (facing the water from shore), just past the last shade structure. Mostly this area is very uninteresting. There are few fish, and it is mostly sea grass on the bottom. One of the good things about this area is that you have a good chance of seeing turtles, which we did.

Green Sea Turtle on Klein Curacao

You can also swim straight out from this area and check out the drop-off of the reef wall. It is fairly deep, in about 30 feet (9.1 meters) of water, but you can view some bigger fish, and some larger hard and soft corals and sponges down below.

We found a better snorkeling Klein Curacao area, but it comes with a warning, because it has some fairly strong currents , and is not for a beginner or a weak swimmer. Do not attempt to snorkel this area without fins on your feet.

The best place for snorkeling Klein Curacao is to walk all the way to the end of the beach toward the left, until you get near the point. While there is still sand, enter the water, not over the rock and coral rubble area that is farther down the beach. Then swim toward the left point of the island. You will find a fairly large area filled with fish, and a very healthy reef, with many soft and hard corals and sponges, including some big heads of Elkhorn Coral. You can swim in the shallows, and out farther toward the reef drop-off.

Elkhorn Coral and snorkeler on Klein Curacao

We experienced some fairly strong currents here, as we swam farther toward the point. There was a strong current coming around the tip of the island in the deep water from left to right, which created an opposite eddy current in the shallows that was pulling us toward the tip, from right to left. So be very careful if you snorkel here that you don’t get dragged out into deeper sea at the point. And turn back before you are tired. In this snorkeling Klein Curacao area you can see some healthy corals, and many fish, all in good visibility . The depths in this area are 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters), getting gradually deeper to around 15 feet (4.6 meters) as you head out toward the drop-off.

What We Saw While Snorkeling Klein Curacao

Out at the healthy reef area we describe, we saw lots of fish of many different types; a couple we hadn’t seen anywhere else before. Unfortunately, the fish were afraid of us so we did not get as many pictures of them as we would have liked. There was also a good variety of hard and soft corals out there and on the top of the reef drop-off too.

Yacht Charter Curacao

Klein Curacao Full day Snorkeling and Beaching Trip

Our private Full day snorkeling and beach charter is the way to avoid the crowds and to be pampered whilst visiting Klein Curacao .

This 8 hour trip takes you to the uninhabited little sister of Curacao. This small island is about 16 miles to the southeast of Willemstad and we take you there in 1.5 hour or less. On the ride out you can enjoy the coastline of the East Point before we turn south-east towards the island. It is often said the most beautiful beach of Curacao is no on Curacao its self but on Klein Curacao. The beach here is made of a very fine white sand are there are no rocks in the shore line. It is every beachcomber’s paradise. There are public beach huts that we can us for shade or use the boat as our base.

kitesurfing klein curacao

Klein Curacao is sea turtle sanctuary and in the months June, July and August the sea turtles come on shore to lay the eggs. Nests can be found along the shore line on the beach. The species of turtle we have here are Green Turtle, Hawksbill turtle and Loggerhead. These species are all endangered so the nests cannot be touched or disturbed. The eggs hatch after about 90 days and the juvenile turtles begin their journey to adulthood. This will eventually bring them back to Klein Curacao to lay eggs of their own when they are matured. It is thought these animals can live of 100 years. In the shallows around Klein Curacao the snorkeling is phenomenal. There are a bunch of sea turtles that hang out around the sandy plateau just of the beach. They are pretty much used to human activity and they will let you swim up very close. This is great for taking underwater pictures. We have snorkeling gear on board which is free to use.

Lunch is served onboard at your convenience. We have a grill onboard and a fully operational kitchen so we can prepare whatever our guest’s wishes are.

On the island there are also a couple of interesting things to see. There is a 200 year old lighthouse that can be climbed all the way to the top. Its gives a great view of the island. On the east coast of the island there are a number of shipwrecks. This wild coast has recently been cleaned by volunteers and is great to take a stroll on. At the end of the day we head back with the waves in our back making the cruise to Curacao very comfortable. It is not uncommon to see wild dolphins on the way back.

The boat trip to Klein Curacao, a small coral island just 10 miles off the main island, is one of the most popular day tours around Curacao. The leeward side of the island, fringed by a half-a-mile long white sand beach, provide good snorkeling opportunities. The seabed is not spectacular (with very few coral and fish at snorkeling depths), but it is visited by many sea turtles – maybe the best snorkeling spot in Curacao to meet them.

How to get to Klein Curacao snorkeling spot?

The island of Klein Curacao is lying some 10 miles off the southeast point of Curacao. Several local operators offer full-catered day boat trips to the island. Most boats are departing from Caracas Bay or Spanish Water early in the morning (around 6:30-8 am) and are back in the afternoon.

Some operators can arrange optional pick-up and drop-off in main Curacao’s hotels and resorts. Prices start around $100 per person for the day, all-inclusive. If you suffer from seasickness, be aware that the boat trip to the island is quite long (1:45 to 2 hours each way) and can be rough and wavy, especially on the way to Klein Curacao.

Entering the water at Klein Curacao for snorkeling

You can enter the water anywhere from the half-a-mile long sandy beach. However, to reach the snorkeling area drawn on the map below (where you’ll have the best chances to spot sea turtles), we advise you to enter the water just past the last beach hut, when coming from the pontoon (see map above).

Klein Curacao snorkeling tips

The recommended snorkeling location covers the area between the beach and the reef, some 150 meters away. The seabed is made up of seagrass and sandy beds (↕3-15ft/1-5m), sprinkled with some small rocks and coral bommies. Among the (few) fish you may encounter in this area are juvenile blue tang , bluehead wrasse , sergeant major , and some inquisitive smooth trunkfish .

Snorkeling with green sea turtles in Klein Curacao

The main reason why visitors snorkel Klein Curacao is the opportunity to see the sea turtles – mainly green sea turtles . By crisscrossing the area, you should not have to wait too long before seeing them. They are generally feeding or resting on the seagrass meadows.

Do not disturb or touch the turtles, and keep a distance when they are coming up to the surface to breathe.

Blue tang in Klein Curacao

At a 120-150 meters distance from the shore, you will reach a slope covered with corals (↕25-30ft/8-1-0m), but the reef is too deep to be fully enjoyed while snorkeling from the surface of the sea.

The reef is by far the fishiest area, and you may come across dozen of fish species here, including hogfish, butterflyfish, barracuda, Bermuda chub and French angelfish.

Restaurants and accommodation nearby

There are no permanent residents on the island. All day tours to Klein Curacao include water, refreshment, and a BBQ lunch on the beach. Check when booking.

Seabed aspect

Snorkeling spots are part of a wild environment and their aspect can be significantly altered by weather, seasons, sea conditions, human impact and climate events (storms, hurricanes, seawater-warming episodes…). The consequences can be an alteration of the seabed (coral bleaching, coral destruction, and invasive seagrass), a poor underwater visibility, or a decrease of the sea life present in the area. Snorkeling Report makes every effort to ensure that all the information displayed on this website is accurate and up-to-date, but no guarantee is given that the underwater visibility and seabed aspect will be exactly as described on this page the day you will snorkel the spot. How to Have an Unforgettable Klein Curacao Boat Trip – Travel Guide and Tips

Guide for a trip to Klein Curacao.

Klein Curacao is a breathtakingly beautiful uninhabited island, located about 15 miles from Curacao. The trip to Klein Curacao takes 1.5 – 2 hours by boat each way, and the entire trip is an amazing experience. That being said, there is definitely some planning that goes along with a Klein Curacao boat trip – and that’s where this travel guide comes in!

A Klein Curacao boat trip is a great addition to any Curacao vacation. The island is so unique and it’s such a fun experience to spend the day relaxing and disconnecting from wifi and cell service.

There are tons of companies that operate boat tours to the island, and once arrived on Klein Curacao there is plenty to do for a full day.

Ready to plan your amazing Klein Curacao boat trip?

Keep reading for everything you need to know and tips for your trip!

Klein Curacao Boat Trip

1: pick your tour company wisely.

There are many tour companies that offer Klein Curacao Boat Trips. However, only two companies have structures on the island.

This is important for many reasons. The first, is with a beach structure you’ll have ample access to shade and bathrooms.

You’ll also be able to enjoy lunch on the beach, instead of having to swim back to your catamaran or boat.

I highly recommend booking your Klein Curacao Boat Trip with Mermaid Boat Trips or Miss Ann Boat Trips . Having a beach structure to relax in, access to fresh water and bathrooms, and tons of shade really made a huge difference. Especially because you’ll be on the island for many hours.

I went with Mermaid Boat Trips and had a wonderful time. Check out my Instagram reel of my day on Klein Curacao!

2: Bring Seasick Medicine

I’m not sure why this isn’t more heavily advertised, but the sea between Curacao and Klein Curacao is rough – and I mean really rough. I don’t normally get sea sick, and I still threw up the entire 1.5 hour trip. About 1/4 of the people on my boat trip also got seasick, and I was told that this is very common headed to Klein Curacao, as you’re going in the opposite direction of the wind and the waves.

Do yourself a favor and take seasick medicine . I literally wanted to throw myself overboard halfway through the trip because I was so sick.

I’m sure you can buy seasick medicine at pharmacies in Curacao, but to be safe, it’s a good idea to bring some with you. Click here and here for two options.

3: Pack Lots of Sunscreen

This goes without saying, but the sun is strong and since you’ll be outside all day, you’ll definitely need good sunscreen.

When choosing a sunscreen, make sure that it’s reef safe! For our favorite sunscreens, check out our post about The 7 Best Sunscreens to Bring on Vacation .

4: Pack a Bag With Necessities

No matter which company you choose for your Klein Curacao boat trip, you’ll definitely want to pack a beach bag with necessities. I recommend the following:

  • Beach hat or baseball cap
  • Underwater camera if you plan to snorkel
  • Beach towel
  • Portable charger
  • Change of clothes

5: Walk to the Lighthouse and Ship Wreck

When you’re on Klein Curacao be sure to check out the abandoned lighthouse and ship wreck! Wear shoes because the path can be rocky, but it’s totally worth the 10-15 minute walk out to the structures.

The views are beautiful and both the lighthouse and shipwreck are very cool to see.

6: Make Sure Your Phone is Charged

You’re going to want to take lots of pictures while in Klein Curacao, so make sure that your phone is charged! There won’t be anywhere to charge it while on the island, and you’ll be on Klein Curacao for the majority of the day.

If your phone battery dies quickly, a portable charger is great to have!

7: There Is No Cell Reception or WiFi

There is no cell reception or wifi on Klein Curacao, so it’s really a place to unwind and disconnect!

8: Most Tour Companies Provide Lunch

Most tour companies will provide lunch while on Klein Curacao, either in their beach structures or onboard their catamarans or boats. If you’re vegetarian, make sure to check with the tour provider before your trip to make sure they have food options for you.

So there you have it! I hope you found my Klein Curacao boat trip guide and tips to be helpful!

While in Curacao I highly recommend taking a day trip to Klein Curacao, it’s a beautiful little island and you’re sure to have a great time. Just don’t forget your seasick medicine!

This looks like absolute paradise what a gorgeous island. And great tips, especially to know not all tour companies have structures to shade/bathrooms which in that sun would be really important. So nice that you can completely disconnect, that my be the thing that makes me want to go here most of all

This looks like such an awesome boat trip! I love that the island is not inhabited and you are so disconnected (in a good way!). Great tips, I look forward to doing this some day!

Good tip on the roughness of the seas — certainly I wouldn’t have expected that, so good to plan ahead for anyone prone to mal de mer!

This place looks like a paradise! The color of the water is amazing 🙂 How much time is needed minimum to explore the whole island?

Hi Magdalena! Klein Curaçao really did feel like paradise. Most of the boat trips are a full day. They leave the dock in Curaçao between 6am-8m, and return around 3pm or 4pm. That gives you between 4-6 hours on the island (depending on your tour group.) With 4 hours you’ll be able to explore the island, see the lighthouse, the shipwreck, go snorkeling and have some time left over for lunch and relaxing!

Klein Curacao is breathtaking! Great resource on how to travel to this beautiful island by boat.

Klein Curacao looks like my kind of place to visit! Thanks for the great tips and definitely adding this locations to my bucket list

I love your photos on this post. It looks like you really are in another world. Great tips about shopping around for a tour company. I have had some dreadful experiences when just booking with the first company I see! I’ve also been stuck with vegetarian options so this is a great extra tip!! As often when you go to remote places like this there isn’t much to buy then you get there.

It’s great that there isn’t any signal there so you can really chill out for a bit. I love the look of the walk up to the lighthouse.

It looks like paradise! Great tips, I love that it’s uninhabited and you can disconnect while you’re there. Your photos are also beautiful, love the lighthouse.

You two always go to the best places! I enjoy seeing what you’re up to. Thanks for the Curacao share.

I grew up in the Caribbean and this was a totally new place I’ve never heard of. That lighthouse looks so cool! Klein Curacao sounds like a great day trip.

Wow this looks AMAZING!! And I love your bathing suit with the flowers on it! This sounds like an awesome day trip, thanks for sharing!

Yes, yes, and yes to the seasick medication and sunscreen! I get motion sickness often, though it is the worst on boats. Non-drowsy dramamine is then my best friend.

Klein Curacao is gorgeous! I haven’t had it on my radar until I came across your beautiful photos and article! Thanks for sharing, and enjoyed the helpful tips.

Wow! This place looks like heaven! Great tips about the sunscreen, water, suncreen and meds. That image of the lighthouse looks awesome! Adding this to my bucket list. 🙂

Looks like paradise. I would love to visit it. I take portable chargers with me on every trip, as I always seem to near deplete my battery with all the pics that I take. Great suggestions regarding which tour companies to book. Thanks.

Such a picturesque and beautiful place to visit! Looks amazing and love the guide.

It looks lovely there. I had empathy for you as I read about your sickness on the boat. What a terrible feeling!

Oh wow, the color of the water is insane 😍😍 Nevertheless my favorite spot is the lighthouse! Such a beautiful photo! I couldn’t imagine there is no reception for the phone! Thanks for the tips!

Great advice on the seasickness bands and sunscreen! And I would love to explore a shipwreck!

Curacao is a Caribbean island not far from my home. Beautifully written blog post! I appreciate you sharing this with us.

Wow Curacao looks like a dream! You got some amazing photos, looks like you had the best time!

Thank you! I had never heard of this place until I saw your post. It looks like an awesome place to visit and your tips are very helpful. 🙂

I’d love to get to go here sometime! Definitely looks like the perfect place to get to unplug/unwind. Appreciate the tips on medicine for motion sickness + tour companies with beach structures too!

This seems like such a fun boat trip, thanks for the tips!

Wow! Curacao looks absolutely stunning! I love old lighthouses and shipwrecks! I live in an area with a few. Thanks for the tips. Would love to go on a boat trip in Curacao one day!

Is there a budget alternative to the recommended excursions? 100+ euros for 4-5 net beach hours is too much (lunch and sail “happy” times doesn’t really excite me). That doesn’t mean i am not gonna do it, but under those conditions i could only do it once. Looking for something like a water taxi service, a local boatman to hire… Any suggestions?

Hi Kostas, thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, every tour/boat service I found (after doing a lot of research on different companies) was around $100. Due to the distance of Klein Curaçao from Curaçao, and the fact that the water can be rough, not every size boat tends to make the trip. Because of this, it’s generally just tour services, and not locals with boats, that offer these excursions. That’s not to say you won’t find a local to take you, but I did not see any locals offering these types of trips while I was in Curaçao. Additionally, there are no public bathrooms on Klein Curaçao, so I would advise to go with a company that at least has a bathroom on board the boat/some shade for the rides – that’s just my preference though. I’m linking Klein Curaçaos tourism website here , and they also show that the cheapest tour is around $85-$95. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Amazed by your instant and thorough reply! Appreciate it a lot! Looks like i am proceeding through regular channels for this day trip, too, gonna save on accommodation type to balance budget. Lastly, gonna need wheels for the west northern beaches, could you recommend a reliable operator (a gps service might prove helpful, also..). Thank you so much, wishing you Merry Christmas from Greece!

Of course! So glad you found it helpful. For a car, I recommend picking one up at the airport so you can save on a taxi fare into town/to your hotel. A quick search is showing me daily rates as low as $43 in January – and I paid around $35ish per day in March. I’ve had good experiences with Hertz and Sixt, but there are a bunch of rental agencies to choose from. Merry Christmas to you too!

Klein Curaçao Trip with Catamaran BlueFinn

The Catamaran BlueFinn sails from Zanzibar in Jan Thiel to the deserted island Klein Curaçao. There you’ll find a true paradise: crystal clear water and a dazzling white sandy beach. You have plenty of time to discover the small island, sunbath on the beach or on the boat and swim and snorkel with the sea turtles around the catamaran.

At eight thirty in the morning, the Catamaran BlueFinn awaits you right next to Zanzibar and takes you across the high waves to the tiny, deserted island. Watch the sea closely, as a group of dolphins might just swim along the boat with you!

When Klein Curaçao finally emerges from the dark blue water you can hardly believe your eyes. Radiant sand, magnificent palm trees, and crystal clear water make up this heaven on Earth. Give in and relish your day in paradise.

Take a walk around the island, visit the lighthouse where you can make beautiful pictures. On the catamaran, you will be served a delicious barbecue lunch. After lunch plunge into the water for a refreshing swim or snorkeling adventure. Around the catamaran, you will see a great number of sea turtles!

Around 15:00 the catamaran will hoist sails and you can enjoy a downwind sail trip back to Jan Thiel. This is also when the famous Captain’s Happy Hour starts. The friendly crew takes good care of you! Enjoy a delicious cocktail, listen to good music while you look back on a fantastic day!

  • Sailing trip to the radiant, paradise island of Klein Curaçao
  • Snorkeling with Sea Turtles and into stunning reefs
  • Use of snorkel gear
  • Delicious barbecue lunch
  • Non-alcoholic drinks
  • Premium bar: alcoholic drinks (beer, wine, rum, and, whiskey) starting at 12:30
  • Captains Happy Hour on the way back to Zanzibar

Traveler tips

  • If you are afraid to get sea-sick, we advise taking proper medication before you enter the boat
  • Bring your camera
  • There is plenty of time to read your favorite magazine or book
  • Use a lot of sunscreen
  • Children’s price 4-12 years old, Children 0-3 years old go for free

The place is amazing, the lunch in the boat is very good, the drinks and the crew are excellent too. Memorable trip. Only thing I could add is: should departe earlier, like 8h30.

It was an enjoyable experience

The boat ride was very fun. The crew was wonderful ! We had all the drinks we wanted. The food was delicious (ribs , bbq chicken legs, beef tips and 3 pastas). The beach was very nice and the water was beautiful. However, there were no turtles to view and the snorkeling was just ok.

Great Experience

This was the highlight of our trip to Curacao! The crew was amazing and fun and we felt very well taken care of. Lunch was excellent. I would highly recommend taking this tour, it was well worth it.

A couple of tips: I didn’t have the foresight to get an underwater camera and definitely should h ave. And bring water shoes for the stop by the fort, would have been well worth it to walk up and explore the area more.

Relaxing Day Trip

Tons of fun, Klein Curacao is a beautiful island. Had a good day snorkeling, checking out the light house, ship wreck and just hanging out on the beach. Great crew, delicious bbq and highly recommended as the one excursion you must book.

7 Best Trip to Klein Curacao Tours (2023)

July 23, 2023.

Klein Curacao Boat Trip

Table of Contents

If you’re headed to Curacao for vacation, you should absolutely consider adding in a boat trip to Klein Curacao, an uninhabited island that sits about 15 miles south.  It’s hands down one of the best tours and most unique days you can spend in Curacao.

(Pop over here first if you need help pronouncing Curacao , then come right back.)

Some of my favorite Caribbean days have been spent exploring remote beaches and small islands . If I’ve learned one thing in my extensive Caribbean travels, it’s that the feeling of being shipwrecked in paradise – truly away from it all – can really help you feel grounded. That’s exactly how you’ll feel on Klein Curacao, which means little Curacao.

Take this adventure, and you’ll spend the day on a long stretch of deserted beach that rivals the best beaches in all the Caribbean.  But a Klein Curacao trip takes a little planning, and mental preparation, so we’re here to make it easy for you.

There are several companies that offer Klein Curacao tour packages – but not all are created equal.  The boats are different, with varying inclusions and travel times, and so are the facilities once you arrive on the island. So how to choose?

This article rounds up the top Klein curacao boat trip providers to help you pick the right one. It also gives you an overview of what to pack and what to expect during your Klein Curacao trip.

How to get to Klein Curacao

By boat!  Curacao has some incredible attractions , but this is one of the most unique for sure. You’ll take a full day charter over to the deserted island.  You have a few choices, all highlighted below: motor yachts, small catamaran, large catamaran, or small powerboat.

How to choose your boat tour provider for your Curacao day trip?  A few things vary from boat to boat.

First, the travel time takes anywhere from 40 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the boat you choose.

Second, the departure times vary too, ranging from 6:45am to 9am.

And third, so do the facilities! Only a few tour operators have a beach house on the island, for example. Some offer open bar, others do not.

We encourage you to browse your options, see what’s available, and pick your priorities!

Klein Curacao Boat Trip Overview: What To Expect

If you’re heading to Klein Curacao, get ready to start early in the morning.  Your full day adventure will start with a boat trip that lasts about 1 to 2 hours each way depending on your boat (unless you take a fast powerboat, which is a 40 minute option). Given the trip length, selecting a comfortable boat is critical.

A very important thing to remember: The seas can get a bit rough, especially on the way there, so make sure to take some seasickness medicine before you set off. You don’t want to spend the whole trip feeling queasy, or worse yet getting sick overboard.

Boat trips to  Klein Curacao  leave so early in the morning, you’re likely to be hungry when you arrive. Luckily, the best boat tours include either breakfast sandwiches on the boat, or a buffet breakfast on arrival.

Once you arrive at Klein island Curacao, get ready for an amazing beach with crystal clear water.  The white sand on the Klein Curacao beach is post-card perfect; the water the kind of turquoise of summer dreams. Soak up the sun, take a dip, and relax on the soft sand. It’s beach paradise – and the calm, shallow waters are great for kids.

Another important thing to know: You’re going to be at the beach, in the sun, all day .  There are only two tour providers that have beach houses on the island, which offer shade, showers, and a comfortable, cool place to take a break from the sun.  For that reason alone, we think Miss Ann and Mermaid Boat Trips are the two best boat trip to Klein Curacao options.

Klein Curacao Boat Trip

Snorkeling fans will be amazed too. You’ll see all sorts of cool stuff right off the beach here, with the water clear enough to see the fish from the surface. The conditions are fit for teaching kids to snorkel , and you’re likely to see sea turtles.

If you’re not into exploring, get a beach massage while the rest of your friends or family is underwater!

While you’re exploring, don’t forget to check out the abandoned Klein Curacao lighthouse and shipwreck. They are each about a 10-15 minute walk, so make sure to wear shoes. These neat sights give you a glimpse into the island’s history.

Speaking of exploring: Don’t expect to have cell phone reception or Wi-Fi on Klein Curacao. Plan this boat trip to Klein Curacao on a day when you can really unplug and enjoy the peacefulness of nature. We highly recommend bringing a portable charger for your phone so you don’t run out of battery while you’re trying to capture the beauty of the island.

A BBQ lunch will be included in your trip, too, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own food. The best boat trip to Klein Curacao providers will also include water and non-alcoholic beverages. Many include rum punch and beer too.  Just make sure you know what’s included when you book.

Finally, you’ll wrap up your day with a sail back to Curacao.  Most boats leave around 4pm, getting you back by dinner time.  You’ll climb into bed happy, tired, and having made some incredible beach memories on Klein Curacao.

What to Bring to Klein Curacao

Even with a luxury tour provide, your day trip to Klein Curacao will involve a lot of time out on in the sun. It’s important to pack the essentials to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.  Once you’ve booked your boat to Klein island Curacao, get your beach bag ready with these must-have items:

Towels:  Most boat companies don’t provide towels, so grab some from your hotel.

Sunscreen: Klein Curacao is known for its pristine white sandy beaches and abundant sunshine, so packing a high SPF sunscreen is crucial to protect your skin from the strong tropical rays.

Hat and sunglasses: Along with sunscreen, bring a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield your face and eyes from the intense sun.

Change of clothing: I don’t need to tell you to bring your most stylish swimsuit , as you may end up in lots of photos.  But also remember: After a long day of swimming, you’ll feel much more comfortable on the boat ride home in clean, dry clothes.

Fins: Klein Curacao offers fantastic snorkeling opportunities, and nearly all tours include snorkels and masks – but not fins.  You don’t need fins, as the waters are shallow and easy to navigate. But if you want a full snorkel experience, consider packing your own.

Water shoes: The ocean floor near the shore can be rocky, so having water shoes or reef shoes can protect your feet while walking into the water.

Beach bag or waterproof backpack: A beach bag or a waterproof backpack is useful for carrying your essentials, such as your sunscreen, towel, camera, snacks, and personal belongings.

Kid-friendly snacks: Your tour provider has food and drinks covered, but you may want to pack a familiar snacks for your kids if they don’t like the offerings.  Your options will be limited to what your boat tour provider offers, and you do not want to be stuck with hungry kids on a deserted island.

Cash: Although tours include amenities and meals, it’s advisable to bring some cash in case you need to purchase drinks or for tipping.

Camera or waterproof phone case: Klein Curacao’s picturesque landscapes and vibrant marine life make it a prime spot for photography. Don’t forget to bring your camera or use a waterproof case for your phone to capture the beautiful scenery and unforgettable moments.

Mermaid Boat Trips: Klein Curacao

the Klein Curaçao specialist

A trip to Paradise... Klein Curacao

Far away from the hustle and bustle of Curaçao's Punda and Otrobanda districts lies a remote, coral island with white sand beaches , crystal clear water , a spectacular reef and colorful sea life . The flat, wind-swept island of Klein Curaçao (Dutch for Little Curaçao) is a mecca for divers , snorkelers and sunbathers .

Klein Curaçao lies 15 miles off the southeast point of Curaçao and is just a two-hour boat trip from Spanish Water . The Mermaid , a sturdy sea-going vessel, awaits passengers at the Fishermen's Pier every Monday , Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday mornings at 6:45am . Six times a week, the Mermaid takes people out to the island of Klein Curaçao for a perfect day by the sea.

When you climb aboard the Mermaid, you'll be greeted with a warm cup of tea or coffee. Captain Kees and his crew create a great atmosphere that makes you feel welcome on board!

Girl is walking on the white sandy beach of Klein Curacao

The Mermaid sets sails along the southern coast of Curaçao. From the boat you'll see Fuik, Duivelsklip and Oostpunt, a completely inaccessible region of Curaçao that has been set aside as a wildlife preserve. Sometimes dolphins swim alongside the boat . Then the Mermaid turns southward and heads out into the blue sea, towards Klein Curaçao.

From a distance, you can see Klein Curaçao's landmark lighthouse and a shipwreck that was lodged on the beach many years ago. As the boat approaches the coast, you'll see a few huts, which are used by the local island fishermen. But mostly, you'll see endless beaches of white sand, waiting to be explored by you .

Once the Mermaid has anchored off shore, you'll want to take a swim in the crystal clear turquoise water . Take a stroll and visit the historical lighthouse or collect shells on the beach. Lie out on a beach chair and catch some rays of sun or play beach volleyball on our pricate court!

The beach house of Mermaid Boat Trips

Exclusive to the Mermaid , Captain Cor and his crew have the only beach house on Klein Curaçao . With a large thatched-roof patio, picnic benches and cool drinks it's a great shady shelter from the heat of the sun. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained . The Mermaid provides all the facilities you need for a nice day on the beach.

A fantastic buffet lunch at the beach house awaits you-chicken, spare ribs, beef burgers, corn, various salads and fruits are prepared to perfection. Beer, wine, juices and soft drinks are provided (alcoholic drinks for a small fee).

For snorkelers and scuba divers , Klein Curaçao has much to offer. Klein Curaçao has beautiful coral formations, a vertical drop-off and a couple of underwater caves. For snorkelers, Mermaid provides masks free of charge so that you can experience our gorgeous underwater world for yourself. For scuba divers, we offer several options on our Scuba Thursdays , when Jackie (our in-house dive guide/instructor ) joins us to Klein Curacao. For certified divers Jackie takes you for a morning dive to the most beautiful reef on Klein Curacao’s northwestern tip by dinghy. The dive costs $99 and includes all the required diving equipment and Jackie’s services. For non-certified divers she offers introductory dives on Thursdays as well for $135 (price includes video footage), these are giving in the afternoon right by the boat in front of the beach house and are open to everybody to give scuba diving a first chance in the beautiful crystal-clear waters of Klein Curacao. For all the details around diving with Mermaid on Klein Curacao please contact About Jackie Fine Diving (click here).

And at 3:20 pm, it's all aboard time as the Mermaid heads back to the mainland. From the shores of Curaçao, people greet the Mermaid's return with warm smiles and friendly waves.

A perfect day!!!

Luckily for you, my husband and I have been to Klein Curacao so many times in the past years. We also know most of the tour operators after living on the island for so long.

To make sure you have an awesome day in paradise, we have created this ultimate guide for you!

Let’s get to it!

A wider aerial shot of a boat on the turquoise blue waters near a lush, deserted island, showcasing an ideal location for Klein Curacao boat trips.

Table of Contents

Klein curacao boat trips – worth the money, 1. choosing the perfect tour provider, 2. what to bring to klein curacao, lunch: time for bbq, how long is the boat ride to klein curacao, how do you get to klein island curacao, can you stay in klein curacao, how far is klein curacao from curacao, is there cell reception or wifi on klein curacao, can you go to klein curacao from the cruise ship, can you go scuba diving in klein curacao, conclusion: boat trips to klein curacao, about the author.

First of all, I want to quickly discuss if Klein Curacao boat trips are worth the money. They usually cost between USD 120,00 and USD 170,00 – which is not nothing.

We have taken the trip many times now with different companies, and we more or less thought they were worth the money. Some tour providers on the higher end are overpricing the experience, but in general, we recommend the experience to any traveler.

Here is what you’ll experience on this day in a nutshell, to help you make the decision:

✔️ Amazing, untouched nature

✔️ Beautiful, pristine beaches

✔️ Great snorkel spots, often sea turtles, and octopuses are spotted

✔️ Usually breakfast, BBQ lunch, and open bar on the boats

✔️ Sunshades and beach beds

✔️ Lighthouse and Shipwrecks

✔️ About 3,5 hours of boat time, 5 hours on the island

If this sounds good to you, keep on reading and learn how to plan your perfect day in Klein Curacao.

A couple stands close together on a pristine white sand beach, with crystal-clear turquoise waters gently lapping at their feet, under a bright tropical sun.

My husband and I have tried most tour providers in Curacao during our time on the island. I’ll not bore you with too many options, but rather only show you my favorite one .

I’ll also present a second option for luxury travelers or travelers who get seasick easily.

❤️ On our latest trip we booked the Klein Curacao day trip with Breeze Adventures on the boat Topcat. We both agreed that this was one of the best tours we have ever taken.

Here are some of the reasons why we loved this boat trip to Klein Curacao so much:

💙 The crew was attentive, friendly, fun, and extremely engaged with all passengers

💙 There were only about 25 guests on the boat! We loved the small group , it was a great mood and we made many friends

💙 The BBQ was extremely delicious and there was a small dance party for dessert

💙 They provided shades and beach beds as well a s ice-cold drinks all day . You could also borrow snorkels

💙 Best money/value relation from all Klein Curacao boat tours

An idyllic beach setting with traditional thatched huts and boats docked on the bright turquoise waters, surrounded by sparse greenery.

💔 What we didn’t love: the sea was extremely rough and half the passengers threw up (not us luckily). While the crew was doing an amazing job, I suggest booking a different trip if you have trouble with rough seas.

Alternative tour: the only other tour provider we would recommend is Miss Anne. The tours are a lot more pricey, but the boat is bigger so you won’t mind the waves as much. They also have a bigger house on the island, including massages, etc.

Here is a list of things we recommend you bring to Klein Curacao on your day trip:

✔️ Beach towels

✔️ Reef-friendly sunscreen (most important, the sun is extremely aggressive)

✔️ Water shoes (dead corals make it hard to get in and out of the water)

✔️ Snorkel equipment (maybe also bring UV-protective shirts , my husband got burned!)

✔️ Seasick medicine

Additionally, you can also bring an underwater camera waterproof phone case, or a drone for awesome pictures from higher up.

the authors husband smiling at the camera, standing on a white sandy beach with a red and white boat in the background, depicting a classic Klein Curacao boat trip scene.

3. Things To Do On Your Day in Klein Curacao

  • Visit the Lighthouse
  • See the Shipwrecks
  • Snorkel With Sea turtles
  • Walk on Klein Beach
  • Jump into the crystal clear water
  • Have a massage (only on Miss Ann Boat Trips)
  • Eat delicious BBQ
  • Take fun pictures

Most tours leave from the Caracasbaai early in the morning (around 07:30) and arrive on Klein Curacao about 1,5 hours later.

Once you arrive, it is time to get settled on a beach bed and put on some more sunscreen . Some tour providers offer breakfast on the island (Miss Ann), and others will give you something to eat on the boat before departure (Breeze Adventures).

The mornings on Klein Curacao are the best time for exploring because the sun is not too hot. You can walk all the way to the famous lighthouse and the shipwrecks (about 1,5 hours) or go snorkeling.

stunning aerial shot of the lighthouse on klein curacao island

As far as I know, all tour providers serve a great BBQ lunch, typically between 12:00 and 13:00.

There is always a great selection for any taste. I loved the spare ribs, the self-made peanut sauce, and the fried plantains.

Usually, this is also when the bar opens with alcoholic drinks. Don’t drink too much, otherwise, you’ll get seasick on the way home!

A plate with a hearty meal consisting of barbecued ribs, pasta, plantains, and a side of bread and rice, suggesting a fulfilling meal after a day of beach activities.

Most boat trips leave from Klein Curacao pretty early in the day (around 3:00 PM). This means you’ll have not as much time to explore in the afternoon.

I suggest a snorkel with sea turtles or a nice swim in the ocean before going back home.

You can also stay on the boat after lunch and have a couple of cocktails! Try some Blue Curacao , if they have it!

At 3:00 PM it is usually time to go back to Curacao.

Frequently Asked Questions: Boat Trips To Klein Curacao

The boat ride from Curacao to Klein Curacao takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on the tour company.

Mermaid Boat Trips, Blue Finn Charters, and Miss Ann Boat Trips as well as Breeze Adventures offer journeys from Curacao to Klein Curacao in around 1.5 hours. Of course, it depends on the sea conditions.

The ride in the morning is usually a lot more bumpy than the ride back.

The only way to get to Klein Curacao island is by boat. There are various tour companies offering day trips to Klein Curacao.

You can either book a catamaran trip, a yacht trip, or a speedboat trip to the island. Sometimes even overnight trips are offered.

A bright red and white boat is moored off a secluded beach with crystal-clear blue waters, under a clear sky, perfect for Klein Curacao boat trips.

It is not possible to stay in a hotel in Klein Curacao, as there are none. However, some tour providers do offer overnight tours where you’ll be sleeping on the boat.

It is a great & unique experience. Because there is no light pollution, you’ll be able to see the Milky Way super clearly.

Klein Curaçao is pretty close to Curaçao, only about 15 miles (24 kilometers) away. It’s like a short boat ride, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours to get there. Super easy to visit for a day trip!

As you can see on the map below, the islands are pretty close to each other. But here is the crux: the eastern part of Curacao is privately owned.

This means, that boat trips to Klein Curacao have to take off at Caracasbaai or Santa Barbara Beach, which takes a lot longer.

map showing the location of the island klein curacao with distance to curacao island

No, there is neither cell reception nor Wifi on Klein Curacao. It is the perfect time to relax and unwind, away from all the distractions.

You’ll still want to bring your phone (as they are most likely your tour tickets) and to take some pictures. Little Curacao has some of the best beaches in the Caribbean (Klein Beach) so make sure to have your phone charged.

Aerial view of a stunning white sand beach bordering clear turquoise waters, with green shrubbery and a few small huts scattered along the shoreline.

It is probably not possible to make the start dates for Klein Curacao day tours unless your cruise ship stays overnight in Curacao.

Most day trips to Klein Curacao take off super early in the morning, far from the cruise port in Willemstad.

If you are looking to go, either book a private powerboat trip to Klein Curacao or head to one of the other fabulous beaches near the cruise port.

the author standing in red bikini on a super pretty beach called Klein Beach in Klein Curacao

Absolutely! Klein Curaçao is a great spot for scuba diving. The clear waters and rich marine life make it an amazing experience. You can explore coral reefs, see colorful fish, and maybe even spot a sea turtle!

Make sure to book with a tour provider that supports scuba diving and has tanks for rent, as this is not super common.

A boat trip to Klein Curacao from Curacao should definitely be on your bucket list when visiting the island.

Klein Curacao has the best beach in Curacao in my opinion – it is always worth a visit. If you get seasick easily, you might wanna skip this one tho!

There are many tour providers out there, and I think with Breeze Adventures we have found the best one of them all!

I can only recommend booking a tour with them – and bringing all the necessary items I listed in this post for the ultimate experience.

3-in-1 Snorkeling Trip

snorkeling

The underwater landscape of Curacao is one to discover! Take your loved ones on a snorkeling expedition to the 3 most beautiful snorkeling sites on the east coast of Curacao.

On Fridays at 10:00 am we leave for our first snorkeling spot in the open ocean! Here you can see the overgrown wreck of a sailboat surrounded by colorful fish. The second snorkel spot is the famous Tugboat in Caracas Bay. This 9 meter long wreck is covered with coral, sponges and surrounded by schools of colorful fish. It’s a site to see! After snorkeling here, we serve you a delicious lunch at the third snorkeling spot, the pier of Caracas Bay. In shallow water you can swim among an abundance of fish, coral and other marine life. You can even go underneath the pier to see different formations of hard and soft corals. It is truly a spectacular snorkeling spot!

Scuba Divers can join us on this trip for a 1-tank drift dive (from Tugboat to the pier at Caracas Bay). Contact Dive Center Scuba Do

West Coast Beach Trip

family jumping beach curacao

Trip Details

On Sundays we cruise along the west coast of Curacao to the most pristine beach the island has to offer. Cas Abao Beach is considered one of the top 5 most beautiful beaches in the world, and as soon as we arrive, you will certainly understand why! Long pearl white beach, waiving palm trees, tropical cabanas , and the crystal clear blue water! We moor here so you can swim, snorkel, scuba dive or just relax on the boat or in the water, while the crew prepares you a fabulous BBQ lunch!

After a relaxing couple of hours at Cas Abao Beach, we slowly start heading back staying close to the coastline of Curacao to admire all the sights up close. We make a short stop at Kokomo Beach, if their buoy is available for mooring. Jump off the boat, off the pier or take a cool selfie on the Kokomo swing! After this short stop, we continue our trip close to the coast. A visit to the "pontjesbrug" (floating bridge) completes the trip. We dock at 5:00 PM.
