The Featherbed Company Knysna

Featherbed Co.  gives visitors to the Garden Route an unforgettable experience on the Knysna Lagoon. The Lagoon, more accurately defined as an estuary, has five fresh water rivers flowing in from the surrounding Outeniqua Mountains meeting with the surge of sea water from the Indian Ocean through the mighty headlands – known as the ‘Knysna Heads’ - the grand sandstone cliffs towering above the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon.

There are various family activities in Knysna, of which Featherbed Co. offers several unique activities. Included is our own private nature reserve & trail, restaurants and a fleet of various boats. We can offer activities such as cruising the lagoon, nature trails and hiking the Knysna Heads, as well as hosting private functions, conferences, and weddings at any of our venues.

Our boating fleet includes a one-of-a-kind Paddle Cruiser, the famous John Benn and a Rivercat ferry. All (with exception of the Rivercat) offer restaurant and bar facilities to cater for luncheons and dinner cruises, perfect for private charters, weddings, conferences, and other functions such as product launches.

featherbed nature reserve review

Wow, what a superb experience! With a nature reserve guide with us throughout our visit, this was one of the highlights of our tour. Taken by boat to the reserve, we then had great fun travelling by trailer to the top of the hill, followed by a fairly easy walk back down. The views were breathtaking and the guides were very helpful and knowledgeable - they obviously love the place, and quite rightly so! Optional, slightly more adventurous 'side-routes' were available on the way down... read more

“Very nice Cruise”

Crew are very friendly and they make you feel welcomed. Food was excellent specially for me who is a vegetarian . It was much better than I expected. OmChohan

Three Legs is an open ferry with a sun-deck or shaded seating. There are roll-down weather blinds, fold-away tables and cushioned seats. There is also a cash bar and snack menu on board (in season, or on request with prior bookings)

This is a fun and adventurous cruise to and INTO the Knysna Heads between the cliffs (ocean conditions permitting), visiting Otter Cove, Island Rock and passing the beachcomber caves.

This unequalled experience takes visitors back in time to the days when Knysna was a port and shares with those on board the thrills and spills of Knysna and its past.

This cruise is ideal for groups, so enjoy the sun on your face, the wind in your hair and experience the excitement of being on the water!

“Lunch with friends”

Went here on a Sunday lunchtime and had delicious fish and chips next to the water. Gorgeous views, watched the boats coming in and out and also shared a really yummy bottle of wine called Splattered Toad! What more could you wish for on a sunny Sunday? Went again for an evening meal and had steak with a herb and lemon butter, and then shared an amarula crème brulee which was amazing. Great spot, love it! sueskyblue, Chichester, United Kingdom

Things to do in Knysna

We sail the most pristine part of the Garden Route, a coastal stretch that runs from the Outeniquas to the Tsitsikamma Mountain range, of which Knysna is the heart. A town situated on the shores of a protected natural basin guarded by two huge geological formations known as the Knysna Heads. The Knysna Basin forms a perfect lake like estuary, a natural bay, and is home to our sailing vessels with the Knysna heads being our passageway to the warmer Indian Ocean. This phenomenon must be one of the most striking natural geographical features along the entire Southern African coastline. Views along this jagged edged coast include small hidden beaches bordered by indigenous fynbos and weathering sandstone formations, that have, through time, created alluring picturesque coves and mysterious stone caverns.  To complete it all, the line of forests and the blue mountains in the distance create the perfect backdrop for this remarkable vista.

Experience the thrill of adventure as you explore Knysna

Knysna is the “heart and soul” of exploration and adventure along the Garden Route. Its natural surroundings make this the perfect destination for sightseeing, foodie experiences, leisure adventures and recreational sport, be it on the water, on land or in the air.

The region boasts mountains, forests, rolling hills and coastal routes. It can be explored while hiking, cycling, running and road tripping by car or motorcycle.  The countryside of Knysna is home to a huge diversity of natural fynbos and indigenous forests. It has a mysterious past which includes wood cutters, gold and elephants. Many legends have been born in this region and untold stories are to be found along the beautiful back roads of the area, go and find them…

Take to the sky in Sedgefield and soar with the birds in a tandem paraglider There are numerous take off sites in the Garden Route which is known as the unofficial paragliding Mecca of South Africa.

Knysna is situated in the middle of the Garden Route National Park, which forms part of a natural Lakes District with an endless network of rivers, lakes and estuaries, all waiting to be explored. Grab a canoe, go kloofing or try water-skiing, stand up paddling, kite surfing or wakeboarding – Knysna is a water sports adventure wonderland. Stretches of unspoilt beaches with rock pools situated alongside the warm waters of the Indian Ocean all add to the large range of activities available in the area. Snorkel along the coast or scuba dive at the notorious Knysna Heads. Sail through the Heads on an exciting adventure, or perhaps enjoy some world-class surfing at Buffalo Bay.

If you tire of adventure, spoil yourself with some shopping or a sunset cruise on the Knysna estuary. Treat yourself to a visit to one of the nearby boutique wine estates and perhaps indulge in a relaxing massage before a delicious meal at any of Knysna’s amazing restaurants which cater for a variety of tastes and offer varied cuisines.

Enjoy the Garden Routes’ abundance of culinary delights, from an oyster experience to the farmers’ markets where you can indulge in the taste of home-grown greens, farmers produce and taste a sample of the ocean’s bounty in the form of seafood.

The Greater Knysna area includes Sedgefield, Buffalo Bay, Rheenendal, Brenton, Belvidere, Knysna and Knoetzie, each unique in its own way. Amidst this large expanse, you are sure to find an adventure that will fill your box of memories, leave a smile on your face and a camera full of photographs.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

knysna heads cruise

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. These were my 8 favorite amenities on the world's largest cruise ship.

  • Royal Caribbean invited me to spend three complimentary nights on its new Icon of the Seas  in January.
  • My eight favorite amenities included the waterpark and jazz bar.
  • I've yet to see most of the amenities on my list on other cruise ships.

Insider Today

There's a reason Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship is only operating seven-night sailings .

The 1,196-foot-long, 20-deck Icon of the Seas is packed with bars, restaurants, and things to do. Any shorter of an itinerary, and you might not have time to experience all it has to offer.

If you're a frequent cruiser — especially with Royal Caribbean — amenities like the mini-golf course and water playground may not seem exciting.

But of all the activities the new world's largest cruise ship has to offer, my eight favorites are, for the most part, ones I've yet to see on another vessel.

Take a look at what made the cut.

1. The six-slide waterpark

knysna heads cruise

It wouldn't be a roundup of Icon of the Seas' best amenities without a mention of its waterpark.

Plenty of family-friendly cruise ships have waterslides, but few have six — or even one that requires a multi-person raft.

However, if you don't like the feeling of your stomach dropping, I'd advise skipping the 46-foot-tall drop slide.

2. The adult-only suspended infinity pool

knysna heads cruise

The 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas has seven pools and nine hot tubs. As a kid-fearing adult, I loved the grown-ups-only suspended infinity pool.

I spent my time there perched at one of its in-water loungers, contently splashing my legs around the water, wondering if I actually hated cruises.

While I would've preferred a quieter atmosphere (the DJ did not, in fact, play smooth jazz), the pool's views, day beds, and lack of screaming children were hard to beat.

3. The Crown’s Edge thrill 'ride'

knysna heads cruise

There's no need to grab coffee before harnessing up for the part-zipling, part-agility Crown's Edge course. You'll be jolted awake when the floor drops from beneath your feet, leaving you dangling 154 feet above the ocean before the zipline kicks in.

Unfortunately, it comes with two costs: $49 and a spike of anxiety.

4. The 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Aqua Action!' shows

knysna heads cruise

If you hate cruise shows, Icon of the Seas could make you change your mind.

The ship's riff on Broadway-approved "Wizard of Oz" — 16-piece live orchestra and flying bed included — delighted me, a hater of most musicals.

For something less traditional, the semi-circle AquaDome theater hosts a compelling multi-disciplinary swim, dive, and aerial show reminiscent of Cirque du Soleil.

It's the first show-at-sea I've seen with a waterfall and nine-foot-tall robotic arms, and so far, it's one of my favorites.

5. The live jazz bar

knysna heads cruise

Ya like jazz? So do I.

Icon of the Seas has plenty of live music venues — including rowdy karaoke and dueling pianos bars, if that counts. But if you're a jazz fan or looking for a peaceful nightcap, none of these options will top the live music at Lou's Jazz 'n Blues.

6. The customizable Mediterranean-style wrap at the five-stall food hall

knysna heads cruise

The mega-ship's food hall wasn't nearly as diverse or exciting as the one on Norwegian Prima .

But compared to the rest of my mediocre meals on Icon of the Seas — including dinner at a specialty restaurant — my complimentary pork pita wrap from the food hall's Mediterranean-inspired stall was admittedly pretty decent.

The Cava -like meal was balanced, succulent, and filling. Ending it with a strawberry nutella crepe from one of the vendors didn't hurt either.

7. The Pearl Café with sweeping ocean views

knysna heads cruise

Everyone takes a picture inside the Pearl . But few people know that the best part about the glittering structure isn't what's inside it — it's what's behind it: the Pearl Café.

Admittedly, the food wasn't standout.

But it's 2024. In this era, we don't dine for food. We dine for vibes . And the Pearl Café was definitely "serving" (even with its mediocre sandwiches).

At first glance, I had snubbed the dining and lounge area as a rip-off of a generic airport coffee shop. But during my three days on Icon, I returned to the centrally located space more often than expected. It turns out it's a great place to get some work done.

8. The lounging pods that tower above passerbys

knysna heads cruise

Speaking of vibes, if you're looking for a secluded place to drink (as in, not the swim-up pool bar), few will top the Overlook Pods, perched just behind the AquaDome.

If you want to feel like you're drinking in a nest atop a tree, bring your coffee-infused cocktail from nearby Rye and Bean to one of the elevated pods. .

Just don't drink too much. What goes up must come down. And to get down from the pods, you'll have to take the stairs.
