Day Trip from Bangalore to Kotilingeshwara temple

August 8, 2015

In a small village of Kammansanda once a saint had the vision to build a temple with one crore Shiva Lingas and he installed the first Shiva Linga on 10 Oct 1980 which was followed by devotees installing Shiva Lingas from various parts of the world. Today the Kotilingeshwara Temple  is home to Ninety Lakh Shiva Lingas and is also the home to the tallest Shiva Linga in the entire world which stands at 108 feet tall.

Most of our vacations during my childhood were planned to places of pilgrimage, and my father being an ardent Shiva devotee, we ended up visiting numerous Shiva temples all across the country. By now I have lost the count of the number of Shiva temples that I have visited over the years.

But luckily most of these temples have always been in exotic locations. I love to visit temples, marveling at their beauty and the architecture, and admiring the craftsmanship and the interesting stories that are associated with each one of them. One fine weekend when we had nothing to do we planned a day trip from Bangalore to Kotilingeshwara temple.

Day Trip from Bangalore to Kotilingeshwara temple 1

We started around 10:30 am from Bangalore via Hoodi circle towards Kolar Gold Fields. We passed by hills strewn with huge boulders which were a stark contrast to the blooming marigold fields while on our way to the temple. The roads were nice and we relied on Google Maps for directions. We were at the temple in an hour or so.

A post shared by Swati & Sam | Travel Bloggers (@thetalesofatraveler) on Aug 8, 2015 at 9:12am PDT

As we reached the temple, we found very few cars parked there and the temple was not that crowded as we thought it would be. We bought our tickets as we entered the temple. The temple houses millions of Shiva Lingas of various sizes and designs placed all over the temple. The walls of the temple are painted in different colours to give a surreal effect to the entire place. Unlike other South Indian temples, this temple is quite a peaceful place to be, with no guides running behind you or a long queue to enter the temple premises.

A post shared by Swati & Sam | Travel Bloggers (@thetalesofatraveler) on Jul 26, 2015 at 5:58am PDT

There was already a small queue to visit the first temple which is dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar. After offering our prayers in the first temple, we proceeded towards the main temple passing by a sacred tree covered with yellow thread for good luck and wishes. By the time we reached the main temple, afternoon Aarti was about to begin. The Aarti was accompanied by the beating of drums and then the priest distributed prasad and offered Aarti to all of us.

The exit from the main temple leads to a courtyard which houses temples of many other gods like Lord Venkataramani Swamy , Goddess Annapoorneshwari , Lord Panduranga Swamy , Lord Panchamukha Ganapathy , Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Goddess Sita , Lord Anjaneya , Goddess Kannika Parameshwari and Goddess Karumaari Amma. This courtyard is also a host to the tallest Shiva Linga in the world measuring a whopping 33 metres.

Kotilingeshwara temple

As per the project, the target is to install one crore of Shiva Lingas hence the name is ” Kotilingewasara Temple”. But as of now, only 9 Million Shiva Lingas has been installed. Shiva Linga installation can be done by devotees at a starting price of INR 6,000/-. Devotees have a choice of installing Shiva Linga’s of different sizes and also can have their name engraved near it. We saw few families offering prayers to the Shiva Linga they or their families had installed.

Once you enter in every temple priest will tell to pay money and its compulsory if we don’t pay they will tell directly don’t come inside temple next time.

kotilingeshwara temple trip

We would start the first day of the new year by visiting a temple nearby. But this time we thought of adding a drive to this tradition and making it slightly interesting by visiting Kotilingeshwara . Reaching Kolar from Bengaluru is a standard route. Google maps suggest the same thing, You essentially have to connect to NH75 and continue your way East towards Kolar. From Kolar , you can either follow SH 96 or go through Bangarapet to reach the temple.

kotilingeshwara temple trip

The temple has two parking , one in the open ground which is very big, and the other smaller one in shade. The way towards the entrance is from both the parking. There are many shops on this path from where you can buy offerings for the Deities. The entry ticket cost is 20INR , for a small child there is no ask.

As the name says Kotilingeshwara were Koti means crore and ling refers to as shiv lingams. The temple complex supposedly has 10 million Shiva lingams spread beautifully around a towering central Shiva lingam. The lingam is about 108 ft tall and opposite to which is a big idol of Nandi. There are many interesting stories describing the importance of Nandi’s presence in front of the lingam.

kotilingeshwara temple trip

Koltilingeshwara temple is designed in such a way that one has to go through the other 11 temples inside the premises to reach the big shiva lingam which is the center of attraction. Would advise you to carry money in small denominations so that you can donate at every point if you wish to.

kotilingeshwara temple trip

It is like a road to spirituality, where you seek the blessing of all the deities including Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. The temple has a positive atmosphere and some great locations for those Instagram pictures. It is a very good experience to freely roam around the open area among countless Shiva lingam with the Gigantic structure visible from every corner. On your way back you can pick up some local souvenirs. There are many vendors for some quick munchies and refreshments as well.

The holidays are weekends are usually busy. But the temple is so big that it can easily accommodate a larger number of devotees. The queue to the temple is generally smaller and moves faster. Maha Shivratri celebrations are grand and a huge amount of devotees visits the place to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

Kotilingeshwara Temple with 1 Crore Shiva Lingas just 2 hours drive from Bangalore.

Photo of Ajay Gupta

Just about 100 km (2.5 hours) from Bangalore, there is prestigious temple of Lord Shiva in village Kammasandra in Kolar district of Karnataka.

This temple is famous because of the largest and tallest shiva linga present in Asia. People believe there are about one crore lingas of different sizes but the actual number could be a little lesser (around 90 lakhs and daily some lingas are being added by the devotees, shortly it could cross 1 Crore mark).

Within the premises of the temple, there are about eleven other temples for different deities. The first of them includes the temple of Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Maheshwara temples. This is followed by a temple of Lord Kotilingeshwara. Every day a good number of devotees visit this temple and offers prayers here.

Maha Shivaratri is a special occasion and a large number of devotees make it a point to be there on this auspicious day.

People visiting Bangalore may include this temple in their itinerary if time permits.

During your Bangalore to Kotilingeshwara road trip, you’ll have the opportunity to explore some interesting places. Here are a few noteworthy stops to consider adding to your itinerary, but the speciality is just about Kotilingeshwara Temple:

Kotilingeshwara Temple

As soon as the month of Sawan begins, chants of Har Har Mahadev start in all the Shiva temples. All the devotees are fasting and worshipping Baba to fulfil their wishes. This article is about an extraordinary temple. This temple is a treasure trove of wonder and an ocean of devotion. All the devotees will be able to take a dip in faith. This temple is known as Kotilingeshwar Dham. This enchanting temple is situated at Kammasandra in the Kolar district of Karnataka state.

The unique thing about this temple is that there are not one or two crores of Shivling here, which makes this temple different from other temples. You must be thinking that I am joking with you. Apart from crores of Shivlings, another identity of this temple is the main Shivling, which is famous for its vast form.

The Speciality of the Kotilingeshwara Temple

The name of this temple (Kotilingeshwar) itself tells its thing. The word Koti in Sanskrit has two meanings, one is ‘the ultimate’, and the other is crore. Both these meanings reflect the speciality of this temple. As I have already told you, the number of Shivling in this temple is in ‘Crores’, and this temple is very excellent, i.e. ‘Param’. When Baba’s idol is so tall, then think how the idol of his supreme devotee Nandi Maharaj can be small.  The view of crores of Shivlings and the colossal statue of Nandi Maharaj in the temple premises, imagine how wonderful the sight would be. Devotees get satisfied just by seeing it.

Thousands of devotees from every corner of the country come here to fulfil their wishes. There is more crowd of devotees here during the Mahashivaratri and Sawan months.

In the same list, the devotees whose wishes are fulfilled establish a Shivling. In this way, the number of Shivlings is increasing daily here. You have to contact the temple organization to install the Shivling.  It is an essential place from a tourism and religious point of view.

Moreover, it also has mentioned in the Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Geographically, Kolar is surrounded by the Bengaluru Rural in the west, Chikkaballapura in the north, Andhra Pradesh state in the east and Tamil Nadu state in the south. And thanks to its proximity to Bengaluru , Kolar is an excellent weekend getaway with many tourist attractions. Here you have numerous places to visit which include the Kolaramma Temple, built by the Gangas and later renovated by the Cholas, Someshwara Temple built by the Cholas and expanded during the Vijayanagara period, the Koti Lingeshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva which has a staggering collection of over 60 lakh Shiva Lingas. • Markandeshwara Temple, Vakkaleri: Vakkaleri is situated on the foothills of Markandeya Betta (hill), around 12 km from Kolar, is quite an ancient place. This place has earned significance because of copper-plate inscriptions of the Badami Chalukyan ruler Keertivarma of the 8th Century and are popularly called Vakkaleri Inscriptions. These inscriptions record the exploits and sing the praise of Keertivarma who conquered the nearby provinces. On top of the Markandeshwara Betta, behind Vakkaleri village, the Markandeshwara Temple is situated. It is built in the Vijayanagara style, and has a garbhagriha with two ardhamantapas. Legend has it that the great sage Markandeya who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva meditated here. It was destined that he would die at a young age of 16. And when the anointed day came, Yama came to take him. But Markandeya who was worshipping the Shivalinga, held on to it tightly asking Lord Shiva's protection when Yama threw his whip and sprung his noose around Markandeya's neck. But the noose also mistakenly landed around the Shivalinga. Lord Shiva thus emerged and then defeated Yama. And pleased with Markandeya's devotion, Lord Shiva gifted the boon of Chiranjeevi (who has no death) to Markandeya. Even today, one can see a three-finger mark on the Shivalinga and a mark of the whip inside the well situated in the temple.

  • Kolar Gold Fields : Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) is around 30 km from Kolar and was at one time the deepest and most productive gold mine in the world. It is said that gold here has been mined from as early as 5th Century. The Champion Reef is believed to be one of the world's deepest and mined to a depth of 50 m. • Markandeya Dam: This dam site is near Budikote where the Markandeya River, rising in the Vakkaleri hills and flowing eastwards, splits into two streams here. The village of Budikote is found on the confluence of the two streams of the river. At a higher level of the river at Ukkunda village, across two small hillocks a dam is built between 1936-1940, having a height of 30 metres and 750 metres length. The beautiful reservoir that has been formed is today a local tourist attraction which attracts numerous tourists. Even after 80 years since it was built, it still irrigates many farmlands of paddy and sugar cane fields.
  • Shivarapattana : Shivarapattana in Malur taluk has been attributed as "Shilpakashi" which it richly deserves. Shivarapatna is a small village where majority of the local population work on crafting idols mostly in stone and also in metal. Idols of Gods and Goddesses are hand chiseled here by local expert sculptors for various temples in Karnataka as well as other states. In 2010, the Government of Karnataka, gave Shivarapattana the status of ‘Paramparika Shilpakala Grama’ (Heritage Sculpture Village). The sculptors of Shivarapattana are capable of creating any type of traditional sculptures of any style be it be it the Nolamba, Ganga, Chola, Hoysala or Vijayanagara styles. And no wonder, there is good demand for their work in other states of India apart from Karnataka. In fact, sculpture work in stone/ metal are excellent souvenirs items to buy from Shivarapattana.
