Avoid the summer months from March to May as the heat can make the climb extremely exhausting.

Fitness Level Required

Kunti Betta is rated as easy to moderate in terms of difficulty level and most first-timers are able to complete it comfortably over 2-4 hours. That being said, it does involve steep ascents at certain points with rocky and uneven terrain. Basic fitness levels with the ability to hike or jog for 6 km with some steep sections are advisable to fully enjoy the experience. Carrying sufficient water and snacks and taking enough rest stops will also help ease the effort required.

What To Carry

Kunti Betta does not require any specialised gear but do ensure you carry the following:

Comfortable trekking shoes with good traction, small backpack with 2 litres of water, snacks and refreshments, extra pair of socks, windcheater, torchlight, basic first aid kit, extra clothes to change into

In addition, wear light, breathable clothing in layers along with caps and sunglasses. Though unlikely, some groups prefer to carry tents and sleeping bags for possible overnight camping on the hill.

The Actual Trek and Key Highlights

The trek starts from the base village of Thonnur as you cross sylvan countryside scenery filled with coconut groves, mango orchards and green paddy fields to reach the foothills. It begins 30-40 minutes into a walk over a muddy trail.

The first highlight is a breathtaking natural pond surrounded by immense boulders that appear after covering 1 km uphill. Right above lies an ancient mandapa or stone canopy built during the Chola dynasty that shelters a unique Shiva Linga. After crossing an old stone fence, the terrain grows rockier interspersed with narrow bushy passages, loose pebbles and unexpected dips. Giant ladders placed strategically across steep boulders help you overcome difficult patches without losing balance.

Halfway up at the 1.5 km mark lies the most popular highlight – the legendary cave where Kunti and the Pandavas are believed to have resided as per local legends. Multiple big crevices on the surrounding rocky surface are also pointed out by guides as hand and foot imprints left behind by Bheema, the strongest Pandava endowed with phenomenal might.

The final stretch is a short but steep climb of around 500-600 steps formed of rough stone leading right to the windy summit. As you stand atop the peak, you’re rewarded with a fabulous 360° panorama encompassing the entire scenic landscape around Kunti Betta across Mandya’s villages.

Things To Do

While trekking through the heart of nature is the prime activity, Kunti Betta also presents opportunities for the following:

Keep an eye out for peacocks, parrots, bulbuls, painted storks, green pigeons and other avian species. Capture the surrounding vistas across hills and plains from unique angles. Check out the ancient Kalmandira Temple at the foothills dedicated to Lord Veerbhadra Swamy housing exquisite stone carvings. Visit heritage sites like Srirangapatna, Ranganathaswamy Temple or scenic places like Kokkare Bellur Bird Sanctuary.

Places To Stay

Several decent accommodation options are available at Pandavapura and Srirangapatna villages close to the trekking base arranged by most organizers. These include comfortable resorts as well as budget hotels and lodges costing ₹1000-1500 per night on a twin-sharing basis. Limited stay-over choices are also available in the remote Thonnur village around the trailhead. Alternatively, you can consider driving back to Bangalore post the trek on the same day.

Best Practices For Responsible Trekking

While enjoying the spectacular natural settings of Kunti Betta, please follow responsible trekking guidelines to preserve the ecological balance of the reserve forests around the hill without disturbances. Some key pointers include:

Carry back all plastic wrappers or bottles, do not litter the trail with non-biodegradables, stay together in a line while walking behind the guide without straying, and never feed or disturb indigenous flora and fauna

With its captivating combination of mythology, adventure and picture-perfect scenery, Kunti Betta offers a rejuvenating getaway that appeals to trekkers and nature lovers alike. Follow the comprehensive trekking guide above to make the most of your experience navigating its lush green slopes studded with age-old stones steeped in legend and lore. Kunti Betta Day Trek – Complete Itinerary and The Ideal Time to Go

Kunti Betta Day Trek

The Kunti Betta is a two-rocky hill structure found in Pandavapura, Mandya district, Karnataka, around 130 kilometers from Bangalore. The hill rises to a height of 2882 meters above sea level, with steep granite walls.

History of Kunti betta:

This hill has a historical connection to the rule of Tipu Sultan and the Pandavas in the 18th century. According to legend, the Pandavas from the Mahabharata and their mother Kunti lived in the caverns of this hill during their exile.

Kunti’s favorite spot, where she spent a lot of her time, is named Kunti Betta; as a result, the mountain is named Kunti Betta. At the top of the slope is a utensil-shaped stone and a stone pestle, where it is said she used to prepare and granulate food, which is why this hill is also known as Onake Betta ( Onake implies pestle in Kannada).

Pandavapura:

These slopes were previously known as the ‘French Rocks,’ because the French armed forces that assisted Tipu Sultan in his war against the British used this location as their outdoor training ground. The Pandavas’ 12-year exile has come to an end here. As a result, the town is known as ‘Pandavapura.’ Pandavapura is historically significant since it is thought that the Pandava brothers and their mother Kunti resided here during their exile.

It is also said that Kunti and the Pandavas fell in love with the hills, so the hills are named after her and the place after the Pandavas. At the foot of the hill, there is a temple, making it a popular pilgrimage site.

An Expert Interview Regarding Kunti Betta Trek Details

  • Pandavapura, Mandya district, Karnataka is the starting point.
  • The trek gradient ranges from easy to moderate. It’s a fantastic first-time hike. The trail winds through rocky outcrops, grasslands, and granite outcrops.
  • This trek should take between 2 and 3 hours to complete.
  • 4 km of uphill and downhill trekking
  • There are no water sources. Before beginning the trek, bring at least 2 liters of water with you. At the base village, there is a temple where one can refill their bottles.

The best months to visit are:

The best time to trek to Kunti Betta is from September to February because the trail becomes murky and slippery during heavy monsoons, making the descent difficult, and it is overly humid in the summer.

Trekking at Kunti Betta

The Kunti Betta trail is a short but technical hike. It includes steep ascents and descents. You can see Thonnur Lake while navigating first over a hillock and then as far up Kunti Betta as possible. The terrain is mostly made up of volcanic stone and rocks, with a few patches of moorland thrown in for good measure (short grass, shrubby trees, and hedge). When you see the Stone column, you realize you’ve arrived at the pinnacle.

The Stone Pillar is an ideal viewpoint due to its extraordinary views of surrounding fields, hillocks, and Thonnur Lake. The beginning of the hill is marked by an old sanctuary with a lake in the center. Begin the move trek on the right side of the pond, stepping your foot on the steep slope.

Details of the trek

Begin the movement. Step your foot on the steep slanted surface of a single stone visible to the unaided eye on the trek from the right side of the pond. The initial walk for a few meters is more than 60 degrees. Instead of diverting directly from the stones and following the path that crosses through dense vegetation, there will be a vertical divider that will be difficult to climb.

The track will have a Croc-face rock. Turn right and climb the massive stone that connects the paddy fields and coconut trees to the other slope and Kunti Kund. The Kunti Betta hillock with a column on top would be visible from the opposite side.

How to get a beautiful view:

A small slope bordered on the left side is also noteworthy. Begin walking in the open area on the left side of the path. If you keep following the trail, you will eventually reach the base of the paddy fields. To avoid this, take a right turn along the hillock. The croc-face is the small top on the left. Follow the path, cross the stones, creep around the thick vegetation, and you’ll get a fantastic view of the surrounding area that will make you feel the magnificence of the Pandavas’ legacy unfold before your eyes.

Fascinating adventure !

Oooh! Night trek and rain and all! That first night shot (the second in the post) seems like a sight to die for. It's splendid. I really, really enjoyed reading about this trek. Your descriptions really bring the whole area into life, Nomad. I'm sure it was great to watch the landscape as day broke. Pandavpura has a lake called Thonnur kere, alle? We used to frequent it when we were in college. :)

Thanks a lot, Divya. The landscape was breathtakingly beautiful as it dawned. Yes, Thonnur kere is near Pandavapura. We din't visit it though. Yeah, a short drive away from Mysore. :)
