Deep polar exploration

Le Commandant Charcot , the World's Only Luxury Icebreaker opens the gateways to the highest latitudes of the Arctic and the Antarctic. Embark for a faraway odyssey combining exploration with science, and become experts in these regions that for centuries have stirred the imaginations of the greatest adventurers. See this captivating and wondrous part of the world for yourself.

An on-hand expedition team by your side

Le Commandant Charcot expedition team, composed of 19 to 23 experts, constitutes one of the best guest-to-staff ratios found on any voyage of this kind. Biologists, naturalists, engineers, glaciologists, and geologists, these experts in the polar regions will be on hand to ensure the safety of all your activities and experiences and to share their passion for the poles. They will be by your side throughout your voyage of discovery, providing key insights to help you get the most out of the encounters with fauna, flora and local populations that await you, and helping you better understand the stakes and challenges involved in preserving this natural and cultural heritage.

le ponant cruise ships

Expedition leaders

Alongside the captain, the expedition leader is the main person responsible for managing and coordinating the exploration aspect of the cruise. They supervise the team of naturalist guides, ensure the safety of the organised activities offered, and tailor and adapt the experiences, thus ensuring the full richness of these fascinating ecosystems is revealed in all its glory.

le ponant cruise ships

Naturalist guides

A team of 23 naturalist guides trained in supervising activities in polar environments will be by your side every day to interpret and explain everything about these largely unexplored ecosystems , both onboard the ship and during onshore activities. Meet some of the members of the team.

le ponant cruise ships

Scientific coordinator

On board, the scientific coordinator manages the spaces designed and set up specifically for hosting scientists and their equipment. In parallel with this, they also organise laboratory tours and conferences with the purpose of raising awareness about the stakes and challenges involved in protecting the polar world, thus providing special moments of communication and interaction with researchers.

The poles like never before

Le Commandant Charcot takes you further than ever before, sailing well inside the polar circles and deep into the middle of the ice , where only a PC2 polar class ship (icebreaker) can safely venture. Onboard, on land, on the sea or on the ice, enjoy a range of unique , intense and authentically immersive experiences amidst the quasi-hypnotic power of the polar environment, such as dog sledding, sightseeing excursions in zodiac inflatable boats, snowshoeing, polar diving, kayaking, ice fishing.

le ponant cruise ships

A scientific adventure

Sailing through the remote and icy regions of the poles provides a unique opportunity to regularly and periodically collect scientific data to better understand these fragile ecosystems – which more than a century after the heroic golden age of polar exploration still have much to reveal – and move forward efforts to protect and preserve them.

le ponant cruise ships

Because Le Commandant Charcot is capable of travelling to the most remote and isolated polar regions on the planet, we also wanted to give researchers access to it. Envisaged from the outset as a vessel of scientific opportunity , the ship is equipped with two dedicated research laboratories and a variety of measuring and recording instruments and equipment, such as buoys, drones, ice core drills, salinometers, sonars, underwater cameras and Argos beacons, and represents a unique partnership between academic science and polar travel and tourism.

le ponant cruise ships

By enabling observations and samples made and collected in the field to be shared with scientists via special apps that feed data to their databases, citizen science gives everyone the chance to contribute to research programmes in areas such as whale identification and meteorological and oceanographic profiling, for example. This provides valuable information for the study and protection of these ecosystems.

le ponant cruise ships

Participate in the study of the polar regions

Collect data from the deck of the ship or during your outings. Missions that sharpen your powers of observation! Take photos of whale and help supply the Happy Whale tracking app with data, identify and count seabirds so that their distributions and life cycles can be better understood, describe atmospheric phenomena, observe and listen to underwater wildlife using cameras (ROV) and hydrophones, collect samples of plankton, analyse the samples collected through microscopes. This information is contributing to databases that are essential for the study and preservation of these ecosystems.

RÉDUCTION DES DÉCHETS

Mathieu Petiteau , Director of New Construction at PONANT

le ponant cruise ships

We had to imagine, develop and design everything from A to Z. No ship like Le Commandant Charcot had ever seen the light of day. Going to such privileged environments without limiting our impact as much as possible was out of the question.

le ponant cruise ships

The art of polar navigation

Le Commandant Charcot is the world's first passenger ship to be fitted with a Polar Class 2 (PC2) hull. This gives it the ability to sail between the sheets of drifting sea ice and reach the most remote and isolated regions, when conditions allow. Protecting the polar ecosystems and the coastal sea ice – a vital habitat for marine wildlife – is our priority. Expertise, innovation, humility before nature, cooperation with local peoples and ensuring a minimal impact on the environment are the fundamental concepts behind responsible exploration.

See all our commitments

Etienne Garcia and Patrick Marchesseau , Captains onboard Commandant Charcot

Le Commandant Charcot is both an extraordinary vessel and a safe and comfortable ship. It's a sailor's dream; an outstanding accomplishment You simply could not do better when it comes to sailing in polar regions; though to minimise our impact as far as possible, we explore these regions with a tremendous sense of humility.

le ponant cruise ships

Pioneer of safety regulations in the polar regions

The rescue and safety equipment developed and designed from scratch by PONANT for Le Commandant Charcot (Ice Cube, group survival kit, floating polar shelters and survival suits) currently exceed the existing safety criteria established by the tourism industry as well as the military, raise the bar for maritime safety and standards in polar tourism, and help experts across the world to devise new safety strategies

Ecosystem-friendly landing protocols

Our approach is also based on a carefully considered choice of itineraries , the drafting of a specific environmental brief for each sensitive region or area, a code of conduct for passengers, and of course, a zero tolerance policy regarding the impact we leave behind when we travel through an area. PONANT is a member of IAATO (the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators) and AECO , (the International Association of Expedition Cruise Operators for Responsible, Environmentally Friendly and Safe Tourism), two organisations responsible for regulating tourism activities in Antarctica and the Arctic . Our itineraries and protocols in the polar regions are designed in accordance with the directives issued by these organisations , which stipulate the maximum number of passengers allowed to disembark and the specific conduct to be followed (i.e. maximum wildlife approach distances; briefings for passengers, crew and expedition personnel; the level of Antarctic experience of expedition personnel; and emergency and medical evacuation plans).

PONANT unveils Spirit of Ponant: a luxury maxi-catamaran cruise ship

CruiseMapper logo

PONANT introduces its newest vessel - Spirit of Ponant, a 24-meter-long catamaran ship with only 6 passenger staterooms.

Accommodating up to 12 guests and supported by a crew of 4 (including the chef), the Spirit of Ponant seamlessly blends the joys of sailing with the refined, personalized service emblematic of PONANT voyages.

This addition enriches PONANT's portfolio with exclusive, intimate settings, underscoring the company's dedication to more sustainable tourism and its enduring affinity for sailing. Crafted in France, the Spirit of Ponant assures an immersive journey, charting courses to some of the world's most enchanting islands. Scheduled for launch in June 2024, the yacht will grace the shores of Corsica, France, for the summer season before embarking on a winter voyage to the Seychelles in 2025.

Designed for an intimate experience with a maximum occupancy of 12 passengers, the vessel boasts a dedicated crew comprising the Captain, a PONANT-appointed chef, a seaman, and a steward, ensuring adherence to the company's exacting standards. Itineraries are tailored based on the Captain's recommendations and guests' preferences. PONANT's culinary delights, extensive wine cellar, signature cocktails, room service, and a plethora of nautical activities such as paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and snorkeling are all inclusive.

The catamaran has scheduled 8-day/7-night cruises to Corsica ( Bonifacio roundtrips) commencing from July 13, 2024, and to the Seychelles ( Mahe roundtrips) for winter 2024-2025 season. Prices start at EUR 7500 per person (based on double occupancy). The fares may vary closer to the departure date and are contingent upon availability.

Unexplored East Antarctica & French Southern Lands

Hobart, tasmania - cape town, dates: 17/02/2026 to  17/03/2026.

The Travel Concierge service

The theatre of mythical expeditions and a refuge for fascinating wildlife that is among the wildest on the planet, East Antarctica is still home to unexplored regions. Enjoy many moments of intense emotions on this 29-day half-circumnavigation of Antarctica , connecting Tasmania to the south of Africa, from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, aboard Le Commandant Charcot , an enveloping cocoon shaped for the highest polar latitudes.

In these preserved lands, the icebergs drift majestically in sparkling waters, while the glaciers slowly flow, revealing the millennia-old secrets they have long kept . An ultimate quest and the promise of unforgettable and novel encounters in the footsteps of the greatest explorers, like Jules Dumont d’Urville, Erich von Drygalski or Douglas Mawson, the Australian legend of polar expedition who wintered at Cape Denison. Throughout your journey, our team of passionate experts will go over all the details of these historic exploits with you while sharing their knowledge of the wildlife and landscapes .

From Hobart , the departure point of many an emblematic polar expedition, set off on a unique polar odyssey, at the boundaries of the world, to admire all this singular territory’s natural treasures. During this unforgettable exploration, paced by the ice conditions between coastal ice floe, drifting icebergs and the largest polar icecap in the world - the Inlandsis in East Antarctica -, you will journey into this isolated region and make your way past the Australian research stations, Casey and Davis. Fascinating, bewitching, dizzying... there is no shortage of superlatives to describe Antarctica! In the icy depths of the Southern Ocean, mountains of ice rise like eternal sentinels, and Adelie penguins watch over the ice floe while humpback whales and orcas seem to guide the spirits towards unexplored horizons.

As you sail on to explore the eastern side of the White Continent, the ice floe and the ice disappear to make way for open-water navigation. Le Commandant Charcot will leave the Southern Ocean behind and you will perhaps have the chance to reach the French Southern and Antarctic Lands , in the wake of the great explorers who came from Europe in search of Terra Australis Incognita , such as Julien Crozet, Marc Marion Dufresne, Yves de Kerguelen or James Cook. During this all-new cruise in Antarctica, your senses will sharpen and you will be magnetised by the spectacle of the sparkling ice floe, the majestic tabular icebergs, the monumental ice shelves and the spectacular polar icecap . A unique moment, suspended in time, where the beauty of the White Continent is revealed in its full splendour.

We are privileged guests in these extreme lands where we are at the mercy of weather and ice conditions. Our navigation will be determined by the type of ice we come across; as the fast ice must be preserved, we will take this factor into account from day to day in our itineraries. The sailing schedule and any landings, activities and wildlife encounters are subject to weather and ice conditions. These experiences are unique and vary with each departure. The Captain and the Expedition Leader will make every effort to ensure that your experience is as rich as possible, while respecting safety instructions and regulations imposed by the IAATO.

Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, position of ice, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.

Travelling to polar/isolated regions is an exhilarating experience in remote areas: please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. PONANT offers an insurance contract with extensive guarantees, please contact us for more information.

Hiking or snowshoeing

During shore landings, depending on the ecological resilience of the biome, we will propose hikes at different levels, in the company of your experienced naturalist guides. From a simple stroll along the coast to walks lasting several hours to reach particular viewpoints or historical sites, you will make the most of the opportunities provided by the weather and ice conditions. When the itineraries allow, you’ll put on snowshoes* to set off like the explorers of old and discover areas that have barely known Man.

Kayaking - Le Commandant Charcot

You will make the most of the sailing opportunities and weather and ice conditions to glide along on the clear waters or between the ice floes and get as close as possible to the immaculate nature of the poles. Supervised by licenced expert guides, you will try your hand in a kayak- a craft favoured by the Inuits for at least 4,000 years.  The kayak was initially used for hunting and fishing; for you, it will be a means of making the most of your adventure on the White Continent or in the Far North.*

  • The all-new half-circumnavigation of the eastern part of the Antarctic, an unforgettable trip into the heart of the ice and the protected zones of the White Continent, between the Pacific, Southern and Indian Oceans.
  • Enjoy the unique experience of sailing along the east coast of Antarctica and make the most of these moments to observe the endless variety of forms and states of the ice, in the silence and respect of the landscapes you travel through.
  • Set off on the trail of the great explorers and sailors like Jules Dumont-d’Urville, Marc Marion Dufresne, James Cook and Douglas Mawson and relive their legendary sagas.
  • Aboard Le   Commandant Charcot , a polar exploration vessel opening to the exterior, take time with these unique moments of exploration and observation, in the silence and respect of fragile landscapes and encountered species.
  • Outings and shore visits in a zodiac inflatable with a reinforced team of naturalist guides.
  • Conferences and information meetings on board with our passionate experts, specialists in the fauna, flora and history of the polar regions.
  • Varied activities in a winter setting*: hiking or snowshoeing, shore visit on the ice, polar plunge, kayaking.
  • The discovery of the largest polar icecap in the world, the Inlandsis in East Antarctica, a huge expanse of ice more than 3,000 metres (almost 10,000 feet) deep, where a sense of vastness reigns supreme.
  • The possibility of observing humpback whales, seals, orcas, various penguins (emperor, Gentoo, Adelie, chinstrap and macaroni), and light-mantled albatrosses.
  • Extend your discovery of the Antarctic during a half-circumnavigation of the southern part of the White Continent.

* Each departure is unique. The itinerary, landings, wildlife encounters and activities are subject to weather and ice conditions.

The Tasmanian capital is Australia's second-oldest city, after Sydney, and the picturesque waterfront is bordered by 19th-century warehouses and colonial mansions . Salamanca Place is packed with shops, galleries and restaurants and the fascinating Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is a short ferry ride from the quay. Hobart is within easy reach of some of Tasmania 's best-known destinations, from historic Port Arthur and the rugged Tasman Peninsula to Bruny Island, the Huon and Derwent Valleys and Mount Field National Park.

At sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot

18 February 2026   21 February 2026 - At sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot

Arrival 18/02/2026 Departure 21/02/2026

Spend exceptional moments sailing aboard Le Commandant Charcot , the world’s first luxury polar exploration vessel and the first PC2-class polar cruise ship capable of sailing into the very heart of the ice, on seas and oceans which the frozen conditions render inaccessible to ordinary ships. Le Commandant Charcot is fitted with oceanographic and scientific equipment selected by a committee of experts. Take advantage of the on-board lectures and opportunities for discussion with these specialists to learn more about the poles. Participate in furthering scientific research with PONANT and let us discover together what these fascinating destinations have yet to reveal to us.

Adélie Land

22 February 2026   23 February 2026 - Adélie Land

Arrival 22/02/2026 Departure 23/02/2026

Adelie Land covers around 400,000 km 2 (around 250,000 square miles) of the White Continent between the 136 th and 142 nd meridians longitude East. These lands claimed by France in Antarctica are home, on Petrel Island, to Dumont-d’Urville station , which is named after the eponymous French explorer who investigated the region in 1840. Here, the few resident scientists share the Antarctic desert with Adelie penguins, seals and orcas, as well as emperor penguins during the winter. The extreme climate of this land at the edge of the world, characterised by its very low temperatures and its violent winds or blizzards, make it difficult to access its shores, which are protected by thick ice floe. Be among the rare people to discover this unique place where you will be captivated by the polar silence and the ice reflecting the rays of the sun as you experience the Southern Continent’s powerful fragility.

Magnetic South Pole

24 February 2026 - Magnetic South Pole

Arrival 24/02/2026 Departure 24/02/2026

The convergence point for the field lines of the Earth's magnetic field, the  Magnetic South Pole  attracts the magnetic needle of the compass. While the Geographic South Pole is the Earth’s southernmost fixed point, marking the intersection of the Globe's rotation axis with the Earth’s surface, the Magnetic South Pole moves over time. In fact, it is linked to the Earth's magnetic field which originates in the Earth's outer core, which is made up of molten metal and is subject to convection movements. It was during the French Dumont d’Urville expedition to Antarctica, aboard the famous ships L’Astrolabe and La Zélée , that the hydrographer and engineer Vincendon-Dumoulin made the first calculation of the magnetic inclination that enabled him to localise this pole in 1838. Set off in search of the Magnetic South Pole, try to get closer to it and, if luck allows it, attempt to reach it!

25 February 2026   26 February 2026 - Adélie Land

Arrival 25/02/2026 Departure 26/02/2026

Wilkes Land

27 February 2026   28 February 2026 - Wilkes Land

Arrival 27/02/2026 Departure 28/02/2026

Aboard Le Commandant Charcot, follow in the footsteps of the American explorer Charles Wilkes , during his USS Vincennes expedition undertaken between 1838 and 1842. A veritable mine of information for scientists, this isolated land - where only moss and lichen have managed to adapt and to take hold, forming the tundra -, promises a unique moment. Under an immaculate white coat, a secret world comes to life: from the icy mountains defying the sky to the vast glaciers, some of which stretch all the way to the Southern Ocean, and the icebergs drifting silently through frozen waters. These landscapes, unlike any other, are sure to captivate you.

Sailing along Shackleton Ice Shelf

1 March 2026 - Sailing along Shackleton Ice Shelf

Arrival 01/03/2026 Departure 01/03/2026

During this unique navigation, suspended in time, admire the fantastic spectacle of the Shackleton Ice Shelf. In the luxurious comfort of Le Commandant Charcot , specially designed for polar exploration, the vast icy expanses of the Antarctic will unfold before your astonished eyes. The air here is imbued with solemn serenity, only broken by the distant cracking of icebergs drifting along the shelf. You will perhaps have the chance to observe the many mammals, such as the whales , seals and penguins , which prosper in these icy waters.

Queen Mary Land

2 March 2026   4 March 2026 - Queen Mary Land

Arrival 02/03/2026 Departure 04/03/2026

On the eastern shores of Antarctica, between Cape Filchner and Cape Hordern , admire the captivating landscapes of Queen Mary Land , recounting stories of legendary explorations. In the heart of this region, discovered in 1912, during Douglas Mawson’s Antarctic expedition , mountains of ice rise like giant sculptures, sparkling beneath the rays of the southern sun. The glaciers wind their way like rivers of glass, shaping sumptuous scenery.  In this frozen kingdom, colonies of emperor penguins gather on the shores and leopard seals bask on the ice floe while whales slip graciously through its waters.

5 March 2026   7 March 2026 - At sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot

Arrival 05/03/2026 Departure 07/03/2026

French Southern and Antarctic Lands

8 March 2026   9 March 2026 - French Southern and Antarctic Lands

Arrival 08/03/2026 Departure 09/03/2026

In the icy immensity of the Antarctic, between the 37th and 50th parallels south, the French Southern and Antarctic Lands encompass the largest emerged lands in the southern Indian Ocean, from the Crozet archipelago to the Kerguelen Islands. In the wake of the greatest European explorers, like Julien Crozet, Marc Marion Dufresne or James Cook , who sought out Terra Australis Incognita, you will explore these volcanic lands, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In these sanctuaries of biodiversity which represent unique terrain for scientific research, majestic icebergs stand like ephemeral sculptures, silent witnesses of the passing of time, while king penguins or elephant seals, the lords of these inhospitable lands, populate the beaches with their gigantic colonies.

10 March 2026 - At sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot

Arrival 10/03/2026 Departure 10/03/2026

11 March 2026 - French Southern and Antarctic Lands

Common areas

The striking lines, the quality of the materials, the sophistication of the way they’re combined: the common areas, designed by French design studio Jean-Philippe Nuel, exude a sense of timelessness and offer a genuine connection with the exterior scenery and landscapes. Their design offers a blend of purity, excellence and a sense of easy living through the prominent use of stylish plain tones: off-white, taupe and caviar grey. No flourishes or embellishments here, but instead a unity between the common areas and the staterooms .
