Description of The Longest Journey
Easily one of the best adventure games I have played in the past 3-4 years, The Longest Journey is a delightful adventure with, for once, a truly original and fascinating plot.
Had the game been more aggressively promoted, might be able to rejuvenate the dying genre of traditional inventory-based adventure. Unfortunately, poor sales figures mean that the game may be relegated to the realms of underdogs in the very near future. The Longest Journey starts out in a peaceful town of Newport, in some unspecified region of future United States. You are April Ryan, a young art student who is struggling to finish her painting, as well as making sense of the nightmares she is suffering from lately.
Every character in the game is very well developed, and you'll quickly sympathize with April's friends and detest those that she hates. You also can't help but be quickly drawn into the game by its amazing level of detail: for instance, clicking on most things, no matter how trivial, yield interesting descriptions and April's anecdotes. Anyone who gleefully suffers from the "click-everything-in-sight" syndrome (myself included)-- here is the game you've been waiting for. The plot also gets better and more original the more you play-- I don't want to spoil any surprises here, so let me just say that the game's mixture of science and fantasy is very, very well executed, and there are many surprising twists and turns in the story.
Gameplay, thank goodness, is standard point-and-click affair, with mostly easy puzzles but also some that are quite creative (finding use for a rubber ducky is a case in point). The game also follows the player-can't-die design of LucasArts adventures, so there is no frustrating save-and-restore type of puzzles here (although sometimes the long journey you have to make to retrieve a forgotten item may warrant restoring). The game is also, true to its name, very long: all 4 CDs are packed with gameplay (as opposed to superficial movie fodder of most other games), but you'll be so absorbed you'll be sad to see it end.
There's really nothing wrong I can think of with this game, except that the ending is disappointingly anticlimactic, and voice acting is inconsistent in parts. These nits, however, do nothing to dent this amazing adventure that's well worth the money. Two thumbs up!

Nomen est omen
The Good The biggest boon of The Longest Journey is its world and lore. The story is about two parallel worlds - Stark, the world of science, and Arcadia, the world of chaos - which in itself is not the most original story idea. However, Ragnar Tørnquist obviously spent a lot of time working out every little detail, which makes even the most long-winded exposition dump a delight to hear. I especially like Arcadia, which manages to avoid most usual Tolkien/D&D tropes and offers original races and aspects.
The dialogue writing is only serviceable - they are way too wordy and exposition-heavy - but the characters are still interesting and likeable (at least the ones which are supposed to be). The plot itself is also not especially innovative if you cut out the fluff, but thanks to the lore and characters it always stays fascinating until the surprisingly heart-warming ending. The protagonist April Ryan is not very interesting, but fortunately her excellent voice actor saves the day. The Bad The title The Longest Journey is well-chosen: even for 2000 standards, this is a very long adventure game. Unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. There are various endless long animations which have to be endured over and over again. For example, at one time the player needs to read multiple lore books in a library and the librarian takes almost a full minute to retrieve a book from the shelf. Many people speak very slowly and overemphasize every single sentence because they are supposed to be profound. The game is full of useless screens which are only present to watch April walk through them frequently. Very slowly of course - and this refers to her running speed. This makes the game a chore to play, even when using the escape key to skip many animations (which has to be enabled in the game options and can skip important sequences if not used carefully).
I usually don't talk about graphics in my reviews, but boy is this game ugly. The backgrounds are pretty, but the characters look like they were directly taken from a grotesque horror movie. Especially the rendered cutscenes are bad, with questionable animations and horrible faces - April looks more like The Nameless One than a teenage girl.
The puzzle design is atrocious. I don't think I need to repeat the famous tale of the rubber duck which proudly even beats the cat mustache in infamy. However, this is only the most prominent example; the whole game is full of stupid puzzles. They make no sense, they don't fit the world and their only purpose is to slow down the game even more. The Bottom Line I loved The Longest Journey back in the day, I really did. I started my replay with the expectation to write a glowing review for one of my favorite adventures of all times. It is a shame it is held down by bad gameplay and its slowness, because the world, the lore and the characters are among the most interesting in adventure game history. Unfortunately I believe this is a game which is only digestible for people who enjoyed it close to its original release and those should probably not ruin their good memories by playing it again.

One of the most original adventure games ever made
The Good Well, everything: the plot, the music, the atmosphere, the puzzles, the voice acting (at least on the original, Norwegian version which I played) - it's all done so well that its downstraight impossible for me to complain! The Bad No complaints, sire! The Bottom Line After that you have played the game, you are left with the feeling of wanting more; not becouse of dissatisfaction, but becouse it was such a great adventure it seemed more of an experience then a game - which I wish it was.
This is not a game - but a rare interactive artwork. If you are an adventure gaming as myself: this game is your cup of tea.
"The Longest Journey" has pushed the envelope of adventure gaming further, and is one of those rare and unique games that will leave a lasting impression.
In my book: this is the best adventure game ever made, and I heartly recomend it if you are an adventure gamer looking for a game with splendid plot, excellent atmosphere and top-notch everything.

Great Adventure Game
The Good Likeable main character, nice art and backgrounds, plenty of interesting dialogue and immersive gameplay. The puzzles border on the simplicistic but are consistent with the setting and don't feel forced. The plot is nothing new but moves along smoothly despite being unoriginal. Streamlined and unobtrusive interface that rarely gets in the way. Great Introduction and first part, with very high production values. The Bad 3D characters lack polygons and don't look very great against the 2D backgrounds, especially in close-ups and cutscenes (that are few, blocky and poorly done). Some of the characters share the same voice actor (that does a poor job of trying to alter his voice) and some sections seem rushed (especially towards the end) with too few locations/things to do. The final part and ending seem hastily done (like the publishers wanted to get the game out of the door asap). The Bottom Line A great addition to the adventure games genre and a very engrossing experience.

1001 Video Games
The Longest Journey appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.
The publisher of The Longest Journey , Egmont Interactive, actually tried to turn April Ryan into a pop icon to match Lara Croft. To that end, they cast a real-life model for April -- 23 years old psychology student Katja Koopmann of Bremen, Germany -- and toured the major magazine and newspaper offices with her, dressed up like April and sputtering lines like “I find April sympathetic” with a somewhat forced smile. Once the PR machine runs, even mediocre game sales can’t stop it. On her way to media star, the virtual April next recorded a song -- a dance remix of the 80’s Depeche Mode tune The Balance -- and Katja lend her voice. Egmont spiced April’s image up with exceptionally stupid PR blurb like “I want everything! Above all, I want to show the people of your world something of the life here!” Generally ignored by the public, the song entered the stores on April 14th ‘00, and stayed there. The corresponding video clip was never played on the music channels, the song didn’t appear in the radio shows, and nobody bought the CD.
The main character's name is April Ryan, just like Ryan in the game Dreamweb , also published by Empire Interactive Entertainment. And the plots of both games have some things in common (the hero who suffers from nightmares and must save a world he/she didn't even know existed in the first place).
- A reference to the Monkey Island series : April's pet toy is called Constable Guybrush. And yes, it's a monkey.
- There are lots of references to sci-fi movies and fantasy themes. Most prominent are the references to Brazil , for instance, which takes place on a red tape-clogged insensitive world much like stark. Take a look at the lobby of the Church of Voltec, it's an exact replica of the Information Retrieval building on Brazil . Also the whole repairmen puzzle where they refuse to work on the grounds that it would require a specific form for them to do so is a spoof of the "Central Services" sequence in the movie. They are even dressed in the same way! There are many more, some more subtle than others.
- Want Star Wars references? check out that strange metal ball on the entrance to The Fringe Café. It says "Death Star" click on it and April will spout famous lines related to it, like "Let's blow this thing and go home!" and she even tries to imitate the voices!
The Longest Journey was originally made only to be released in Scandinavia, but it then grew with the sales to cover Europe and the U.S. By June of 2001, The Longest Journey had sold 250,000 copies worldwide, 90,000 of which were in America.
Version differences
In order to preserve his foreigner condition, Cortez had his nationality changed from Spanish to French and was renamed "Corthez" in the Spanish version.
Voice acting
- The character Marcus, who only appears in the first chapter near the Fringe cafè, and only has two lines, was voiced by Ragnar Tørnquist , the director/lead designer of the game for the English release.
- In the German pre-release demo version, April was voiced by German pop singer T-Seven known from the, at the time, successful Eurodance group Mr. President. In the final game, April was voiced by Stephanie Kindermann .

This mod updates adventure game classic The Longest Journey with HD visuals
Upscaled backgrounds and sprites.
If you were looking for an excuse to replay The Longest Journey, one of the best adventure games of all time , then look no further than The Longest Journey HD, a new mod with upscaled backgrounds and sprites, a redrawn user interface and other smaller visual improvements.
Modder Faberman used a neural network to upscale the assets, and has done the same with in-game cutscenes, which you can download separately here . Judging by the screenshots of the mod it's definitely an improvement on the original, and environmental details are much easier to see.
To run the mod you'll have to own the base game and also install game engine ResidualVM, because the original engine doesn't support modified assets. The full instructions are here .
Faberman says they will continue to make minor changes to the mod: there's still "room for improvement", partly because the quality of the original assets aren't consistent. Since the 1.0 release they've put out a hotfix for one specific location in the game, for example.
If you've never played The Longest Journey, which came out in 2000, then it's absolutely worth grabbing it on Steam or GOG during a sale so you can explore its two fascinating worlds, one fantasy, one a futuristic version of our own.

The long-standing tradition of adventure gaming on the computer platform has died down over time. While players once flocked to software retailers to gobble up copies of Zork and Mystery House for their Apple II computers, the scene has since shifted considerably with the modern market (late '90s, early 21st century) focusing on non-stop action rather than long, drawn-out storytelling.
Whether a symptom of modern society's decreased attention span or just the expanding software market in general, the facts are undeniable. Adventure games like The Longest Journey rarely see the light of day in the pulse-pounding, frantic pace of the mainstream gaming world, an unfortunate occurrence in the market as of this writing.
The Longest Journey is unquestionably a unique adventuring experience. The opening menu of the game has the appearance of children's crayon scribble drawings and, once a new game is started, the perspective immediately shifts to a log cabin with an old woman inside, relaying stories of her childhood to two adolescents paying rapt attention.
After several minutes of dialogue, the introductory movie finally kicks in and inundates the gamer with a series of intentionally confusing and vague images. Incidentally, dialogue, movement and most everything in the game can be skipped over by hitting the "escape" key but, if you want to skip over dialogue all the time, this may not be the game for you.
Following the introductory movie, suddenly and without warning you're placed in control of a young woman wearing nothing but underwear (a fact about which she constantly reminds you) on a cliff-face overlooking a magnificently beautiful valley. The controls prove reasonably standard for the genre with left-clicks moving your character to the location you select and right-clicks opening up an interaction menu whenever the cursor starts flashing.
Even this early in the proceedings, some design flaws make themselves readily apparent. Unless you have "subtitles" turned on, the character's dramatic and comedic pauses in speech can easily make you miss details about objects; all too often, before these timed breaks in her speech are over, you are likely to have clicked on something else. Also, the game immediately initiates her spoken dialogue whenever you click on something on-screen even if she is already talking about it. Thus, it's easy (and rather annoying) to double-click on an item or person and have her voice attack your senses in surround-sound.
Aside from those minor annoyances, however, the game remains remarkably solid. The backgrounds are universally gorgeous with vibrant colors, incredible attention to detail and countless nonessential aspects of the game world to examine and explore. The polygon characters, though, are slightly more rough around the edges overall but their movements are extremely lifelike and even character-specific. As such, only the main character is likely to wring her hands together and look embarrassed while only the Mysterious Spanish Guy will open his arms in a flourish, unlike many other games where character movements are generic and universal.
Another area in which The Longest Journey shines is sound (aside from the minor problems already mentioned). The voice acting is almost universally outstanding with only a few minor comic relief characters sounding even the least bit inappropriate or derivative of other obvious characters -- it does seem as if your character is talking to Forrest Gump and Columbo outside one particular movie theatre. In addition to the superb voice acting, the game's sound effects, while often subdued, are nonetheless effective in creating atmosphere. The ambient music, often created by an actual item in the game world, is also top-notch.
Obviously, as an adventure game, The Longest Journey is a bit more complicated than just being a mass of graphics and sound. The puzzles are of a rare variety, often completely logical, yet not always simple to solve. There are only a few occasions in the game when using a walkthrough might be necessary due to the bizarre nature of a puzzle and, for an adventure game, that is quite good.
Based on the foregoing, it might seem that almost any adventure game fan could appreciate this game. Unfortunately, that is not the case as, throughout the game, the sheer volume of dialogue is all but overwhelming. Even in the game's first chapter, some dialogue sequences can take upwards of 15 or 20 minutes to exhaust all possible conversation selections. Admittedly, not all of the dialogue is necessary for advancement, but it is often hard to know what exactly you might need to know from any specific person.
As an example of the verbose nature of the game, one conversation (in which you have no input) is so long that you could go to the kitchen, boil some water, make a batch of spaghetti, return and eat it -- all before the discussion topic is finished. Make no mistake, this sequence is personal experience, not hyperbole, so it is safe to say that if you're not really into long, deep games, you might easily be turned off by this title. Adventure games frequently have a large amount of conversation but rarely has any game even approached the sheer scope of dialogue present in The Longest Journey.
The rewards for wading through all the dialogue, however, are great. The movies and other cut-scenes are performed with the same kind of exquisite detail seen in all the other aspects of the game and always interesting enough to watch again (using the movie-replay function of the main menu). Also, almost every character in the game is solidly interesting in and of itself, making the endless dialogue not only bearable but also often intriguing. Even minor characters come alive in the game in a way usually reserved only for main characters in other games.
The Longest Journey is definitely not the kind of game everyone will appreciate and, in fact, may be unplayable after five minutes for some gamers. However, for anyone willing to give it half a chance, the game can provide the same kind of enthralling entertainment as the most meticulously crafted mystery novel or film, perhaps even rekindling a lost sense of wonder in the way reality really works.
Graphics: From the magnificent canyon skies of the game's first chapter to the intentionally depressing futuristic cityscape of the game's second chapter as well as the bizarre pseudo-dreamscapes of other parts of the game, The Longest Journey never ceases to dazzle the senses with its varied graphical design.
Sound: Throughout the game, the sound effects keep pace with the excellent graphics. Subtle, whispered dialogue slides effortlessly alongside shouted diatribes, soothing whirs and beeps accompany many actions and game functions and the music is often quite excellent. If not for a few easily remedied sound design aspects of the engine, the rating would be even higher.
Enjoyment: The enjoyment factor suffers slightly due to the narrow audience at which the game is aimed. While it would be nice if everyone in the world had the attention span necessary to take in all of the game's dialogue, even patient gamers might want the talking to give way to action once in a while.
Replay Value: With any game this chock-full of detail, the replay value is higher than it might be otherwise just from a sheer plot perspective. Admittedly, as with any adventure game, the sheer linearity of things is a problem, though The Longest Journey does take steps to limit this aspect, thus allowing an easier and more enjoyable, replay.
