Memes and Memories: Inside L.A.’s New Music Revival

By Tim Chan

The Laurel Canyon songwriting circles of the Sixties and Seventies may be a thing of the past, but Los Angeles remains as connected as ever to its musical roots, with homegrown artists like Billie Eilish , Haim , and Kendrick Lamar carrying the torch for smart, poignant, and progressive music that crosses genres as easily as it crosses county lines.

In her interview with Rolling Stone , Lana Del Rey spoke about the camaraderie of artists she found in her adopted hometown: “There’s a lot more music here,” she says, comparing Los Angeles to New York. “I could call a bunch of people and have them come down and play.”

The truth is, Los Angeles has never been better, at least when it comes to its music scene, with the arrival of new mainstays that promise an unpretentious “locals only” vibe while offering up the kind of access and adventure that only the City of Angels can deliver.

And then there’s the weather, which Del Rey says makes the city a perfect backdrop for music making. With almost 300 days of sunshine every year, it’s hard to believe Los Angeles’ music scene ever had a reputation for being cold .

“I think if I could sum it up in one word, it’s ‘sun,'” Del Rey says. “It’s perfect every day.”

Adds Elton John, who lived through the great Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter renaissance, “It’s so lovely to be here [even] in January, and that is very conducive to making music, I think. When I got here, it all made sense,” he says. “[L.A.] looks like it sounds.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Lodge Room opened just prior to Covid, taking over a brick-faced former Masonic Temple in Highland Park, the hip Northeast neighborhood that takes itself less seriously than Silverlake. Once rented out hourly for quinceañeras , the Lodge now hosts everyone from Stephen Malkmus to Feist and every indie band cruising through town. With a capacity of 500 and a debaucherous “anything goes” vibe, the space is toasty, inviting, and a heck of a lot of fun.

A Grand Old Time Nashville has the Opry, but L.A.’s got Desert 5 Spot, a new rooftop lounge and music venue atop the Tommie Hollywood hotel. A weekly showcase turns the Pioneertown-inspired space into a stomping ground for folk, country, and Americana, and established artists share the stage with local musicians, reviving a bygone tradition of impromptu jam sessions and guitar pulls. DJs that spin Hall & Oates and Johnny Cash keep the peculiar party grooving well into the night.

At this Hollywood honky-tonk, the vibe is less celebrity and more community, with the audience encouraged to hoot and hoedown as freely as the beer and mezcal flowing through the crowd. Monthly line-dancing nights further fuel the small-town spirit, though the mechanical-bull rides are best left to those with no backsides — or egos — to bruise.

Billie Eilish Says 'Self-Pleasure' Helps Her Feel 'Empowered and Comfortable' in Her Body

Drake mostly made himself look bad on his latest diss.

Sunset on the Rise The Hoxton is breathing life into a previously undesirable part of downtown L.A., and the Pendry has opened at the former House of Blues space, but the true gem in the city is the West Hollywood EDITION , the latest outpost of entrepreneur (and Studio 54 co-founder) Ian Schrager’s EDITION Hotels portfolio.

Located on the corner of Sunset Boulevard where West Hollywood meets Beverly Hills, the scene inside is fittingly over-the-top. The hotel’s splashy opening weekend brought out everyone from Diplo to Demi Moore, while Janelle Monáe and Chaka Khan have played surprise sets at Sunset, the hotel’s not-so-secret basement club.

Schrager calls Sunset “a modern take on the iconic nightclub,” where international DJs pop in for intimate sets while partygoers get sweaty under the disco-ball-strewn room. Since its mid-February reopening, the space has played host to everyone from French DJ Fred Falke and DJ Harvey to live sets from SG Lewis and Lil Kim.

“I think a couple of places across the U.S. have given music new sounds — Tin Pan Alley in New York, Detroit for Motown — and I think the Sunset Strip is [also] intertwined with music history,” Schrager tells Rolling Stone . “Music is in the DNA of Sunset; the location has cultivated new music, and we are now part of that.”

Sharply-dressed waiters pass around plates of coastal Italian fare, while diners sip on cocktails named after famous songs and albums recorded within the same walls (think the “Times Like These” Negroni and the “Late Registration” — a decidedly debaucherous Kanye-style blend of vodka, vermouth, and yellow watermelon).

Nods to the restaurant’s former past abound in the food too: Ask for the signature tiramisu, which comes layered under an edible chocolate “LP” that diners can “smash” into for a sweet finish to their meal.

Elsewhere in the space, a former recording booth has been preserved and repurposed as the intimate 71 Studio Bar, while a charming rooftop plays host to happy hours and nightcaps alike with unobstructed views of the Hollywood Hills.

Live Beside the Ocean… Over by the ocean, we like the boutique service at the Santa Monica Proper, which fuses a historic 1920s building with a new-build contemporary wing, whose sweeping exterior is meant to reflect the ebb and flow of the nearby California tides. Inside, the impeccably appointed space is overseen by celebrity interior designer Kelly Wearstler, who expertly nails the balance between whimsical and comfortable. There are almost no painted walls in the entire hotel, with surfaces either left purposely exposed (think concrete beams and wood slats) or wrapped in museum-worthy wallpaper and fine textiles. The best seat in the house is at Calabra — the restaurant located on the Proper’s expansive rooftop, where you can sip on mezcal margaritas while listening to local musicians and DJs play well into the night.

Meet Me on the East Side Halsey and Khalid had a hit with “Eastside” in 2018, but L.A.’s East Side is just finding its footing again as a place for live music.

In the Eighties, the Paramount became the home of the Vex, a weekly punk party that played host to everyone from Bad Religion to Black Flag — flyers from the shows still line the entryway to the Paramount today — before concerts were shuttered in favor of less-intensive events, like weddings and graduations.

Now under new ownership, the Paramount has pivoted once again, reclaiming its pillar in the predominantly Latinx community as a home for Chicano music, banda, Latin fusion, and — per KCRW DJ and the venue’s resident curator José Galván — “modern marimba punk.”

Case in point: The Mexican marimberos Son Rompe Pera were one of the first groups to play at the Paramount when it reopened after Covid, and the 350-capacity hall has also welcomed artists like Silvana Estrada and La Santa Cecilia to its impeccably restored wood-and-brick-paneled space.

One of the few independent venues remaining in L.A.’s music scene, the Paramount also houses a pizza parlor on the first floor, providing a feast for the ears — and food for the soul.

Back to the Barrooms You’ll want to pull up a seat at Pinky’s , a low-key cocktail bar bringing sunny Miami vibes to Los Feliz. Formerly a rehearsal space for the Skylight Theatre, the 60-seat bar embraces that high-low vibe that’s come to define many of L.A.’s best bars and restaurants, serving up character-rich cocktails alongside street-size carnitas and chicken tinga tacos. The best drink is also deceptively simple: a $12 Toki highball, made with a Suntory Toki highball machine that delivers just the right amount of fizz and flavor.

The 5,000-capacity Hollywood Palladium concert hall on Sunset Blvd. has been a staple in the Los Angeles live music and entertainment scene since it opened in 1940. Sinatra graced the stage in the ‘40s, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Wonder in the ‘60s and ‘70s; following a thorough renovation in 2008 (including a new dance floor), the Palladium hosts acts from Nine Inch Nails and Robyn to LCD Soundsystem and Björk. It’s also been the location for many a live concert recording. The Art Deco space is standing-room only, including a wrap-around mezzanine, with a half circle-shaped dance floor and a ceiling accented by lights whose curves reflect those of the floor.

The home of the Lakers and the Kings until 1999, the Forum is now L.A.’s premier arena-sized concert venue for world-class acts like Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, and Travis Scott. Located southwest of downtown L.A. in Inglewood, the Forum was erected in 1967 (designed and named to invoke the historic Roman Forum) and was the first building of its kind to be engineered entirely without major support pillars. It can hold up to 18,000 guests and plays host to a range of events besides concerts: boxing, MMA, Cirque du Soleil, and it will be the site of the 2028 Olympics gymnastics competitions.

Beverly Hills’ historic Saban Theatre — originally known as the Fox Wilshire Theatre — opened in 1930 in the heyday of L.A.’s Art Deco period, and architect S. Charles Lee’s masterpiece hosted everything from big cinema to Vaudeville in its early days. Today, the 1,900-capacity Wilshire Blvd. theater features live music from popular legacy acts like Paul Anka, The Temptations, and Wilson Phillips, and also hosts film festival events and special movie screenings. While the building has seen numerous renovations over the years and the lighting and sound systems have been extensively updated, they’ve adhered to a preservation of the look and feel of Lee’s timeless design; the Saban has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2012.

On the edge of L.A.’s Koreatown neighborhood, the Wiltern theater hosts a diverse slate of shows from both indie and major-label artists like STS9, Kurt Vile, Dido, Dream Theater, and Noname. Built in 1931, the Wiltern stands below the unmissable blue-green 12-story Pellissier Building and was originally the main movie theater for the Warner Brothers chain. The loge and mezzanine balcony levels still have fixed theater-style seats, while the elegant main floor can be arranged for either standing room or partially seated for shows like the Nutcracker ballet. Look up at the ceiling and you’ll see a glimmering sunburst decoration emblematic of Los Angeles’ many buildings. The venue is now also easily accessible via the the adjacent Wilshire and Western (hence the name, Wiltern) Purple Line subway station.

One of L.A.’s newer go-to spots for rock and indie concerts opened its doors in 2015. Teragram Ballroom , in the space of a former movie theater, was reimagined by the same folks who run N.Y.C.’s stalwart Bowery Ballroom; with live music from acts like Cloud Nothings, Poolside, and Dead Sara, it has quickly carved a foothold in downtown L.A. There are three bars serving the venue, and the building has reinforced arches instead of pillars, so nothing blocks your view of the stage. For a bite to eat before a show, you can pop into Cafe Teragram and grab tacos, a burger, or apps, a clutch amenity for a 600-person venue.

Honda Center (Anaheim)

View this post on Instagram It's #ThankfulThursday. Thanks to ALL our guests who've made these past years at Honda Center so incredible. We love you. 💕 A post shared by Honda Center (@hondacenter) on Oct 11, 2018 at 1:11pm PDT

A truly multipurpose facility, Anaheim’s 18,000-plus-capacity Honda Center hosts a range of events, from the NHL’s Ducks and the Big West conference college basketball tournament to concerts from acts like KISS, P!nk, Garth Brooks, and The Rolling Stones and even UFC and WWE showdowns. There’s also plenty of family programming — Disney On Ice and the Harlem Globetrotters, for instance — to round out this catch-all arena’s events slate. The entrance plaza to the arena, known as the Grand Terrace, is unforgettable: a stunning 15,000-square-foot space that includes shopping and the large Shock Top Terrace and bar, which opens 1 1/2 hours before events and two hours before Ducks games.

House of Blues (Anaheim)

Don’t confuse the House of Blues at Anaheim’s Garden Walk with the previous location in Downtown Disney. In 2016, HOB launched the current iteration of House of Blues Anaheim and it’s twice as big as before, with a ton of bells and whistles. For starters, there’s four total stages between the 2,200 person main concert hall, more intimate 450 person Parish Room, 175 person Foundation Room for VIP nightlife and even the Crossroads Restaurant and Bar. Come for indie and hip-hop up-and-comers or nostalgic radio standbys, then stay for drinks and dining. And yes, the famous Sunday Gospel Brunch is still a staple.

Greek Theatre

View this post on Instagram #greektheatre A post shared by The Greek Theatre (@greek_theatre) on Jan 13, 2019 at 6:27pm PST

Nestled among the trees on Griffith Park’s Los Feliz side, the Greek Theater is a uniquely intimate 5,900 capacity outdoor amphitheater and a killer place to catch a show. While the pit section seats are always the first to go, terrace seats have great sightlines, bench seating is an affordable option and Box Suites come with dedicated wait staff for a high-end experience. Being that it’s an outdoor venue, most of the programming occurs in the warmer months. Every summer’s slate opens in May 10th with everything from composers, to rising stars on their first big stage, to a spectrum of classic rock standbys often making special appearances under the stars.

Where else can you bring your own picnic to a concert? Bringing your own food and drink to a show at the Hollywood Bowl is pretty sweet, but the programming at the enduring 17,500-person amphitheater always steals the show. Countless icons have played the Bowl in it’s 100 year history, from Ella Fitzgerald to The Doors to Roger Waters. And it’s an even more impactful experience coming from the picturesque band shell-covered stage tucked into the Hollywood Hills. There isn’t a bad seat in the house, but catching a show from a Garden Box is a special LA experience. The LA Philharmonic hosts its summer series at the Hollywood Bowl, as does KCRW’s World Festival and the Playboy Jazz Fest. Not enough, there’s a museum dedicated to Hollywood Bowl history on-site as well.

A Music Lover's Guide to Los Angeles

Los Angeles Music Center offers a blend of art, culture and live entertainment

Although best known for its film studios and Hollywood glitz, Los Angeles has long been a center of the music industry and is undoubtedly one of the best places to see live music in the country today. From the legendary Sunset Strip and the iconic Capitol Records Building to the Hollywood Bowl and a multitude of venues hosting emerging artists, here’s a music lover’s guide to LA.

Revel in rock history on the sunset strip.

Though perhaps not as wild as it used to be, the once-gritty Sunset Strip is famed for its colorful rock ‘n’ roll history. Here, among the live-music clubs and looming billboards, rock legends were made. The strip, running about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) along Sunset Boulevard, became a frequent haunt of musicians in the 1960s, when exclusive nightclubs gave way to clubs and venues. David Bowie, Jimmy Page, Jim Morrison and others frequently played and hung out at clubs like Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy , which are still around today. Other clubs, like the ’70s hotspot Rodney Birgenheimer’s English Disco, are but memories. In the ’80s, the Strip birthed numerous glam-metal acts, among them Guns N’ Roses and Mötley Crüe. Today, guests can still relive the glory days (if in a slightly less debauched way) and see live music at a number of venues, including Viper Room and The Troubadour , or get a drink at Rainbow Bar and Grill , a popular hangout for music legends including John Lennon, Alice Cooper and Lemmy of Motörhead fame.

Stroll the RockWalk

Browse the shelves at Amoeba Music

In terms of finding some music-themed souvenirs , you’d be pushed to find a better spot than Amoeba Music . One of the largest record stores in the world, independent Amoeba Music’s Hollywood location boasts two floors packed with music, DVDs, games, art and posters, and even hosts the occasional free live show – Paul McCartney’s 2007 EP Amoeba’s Secrets was recorded here, in an unannounced live performance. The company has announced that their iconic Hollywood location will soon be moving from its current space at 6400 Sunset Boulevard, but has reassured fans that the new store will stay in the vicinity.

Catch a show at the Hollywood Bowl

No LA music tour would be complete without a visit to the legendary Hollywood Bowl. Opened in 1922, this famed amphitheater and veritable LA landmark abounds in history, which is detailed via a range of exhibits in an excellent free museum . Acts including The Beatles, Nine Inch Nails, Genesis, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett have played on this stage, and top acts — from rock to pop to the LA Philharmonic — continue to do so regularly.

The Hollywood Bowl has seen live performances from everyone from The Beatles to Nine Inch Nails

Enjoy interactive exhibits at the Grammy Museum

The Grammy Museum at LA Live opened in 2008. This innovative museum contains exhibits and ephemera relating to the history of music and how it’s made, as well as the history of the Grammy Awards themselves. While many are drawn to the museum because of its artefacts – such as elaborate rhinestone-adorned costumes worn by Dolly Parton – you will also find interactive exhibits that aim to inspire visitors to learn about musical genres and the recording process. Rotating exhibits have focused on individual artists including Taylor Swift, Barbara Streisand, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Lectures and other events are held in the museum’s 200-seat Clive Davis Theater.

Visit the Los Angeles Music Center

Set in downtown LA, the Los Angeles Music Center consists of several buildings that offer a blend of art, culture and live entertainment: the Keck Amphitheater, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Mark Taper Forum and the Ahmanson Theatre. The most recognizable building is undoubtedly the Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by architect Frank Gehry . Members of the public can take a free 90-minute tour of the Center on select days, starting at 12 or 1.15pm. The tour offers a fascinating insight into the history and architecture of the buildings, as well as the four groups who regularly perform there: the LA Opera, LA Philharmonic, Center Theatre Group and LA Master Chorale. Guided and audio tours of just the Walt Disney Concert Hall are available as well. After a tour or a show at the Center, guests can stop in at nearby Kendall’s Brasserie or Kendall’s speakeasy, The Board Room , for a craft cocktail.

Savour rock history and sandwiches at Canter’s

On the face of things, Canter’s is a landmark deli where folks come to chow down on delectable pastrami sandwiches before hitting up a music, theater or comedy show at one of the many nearby venues. Yet this Jewish-style delicatessen also represents a key piece of rock history. Its current Fairfax Avenue location, opened in 1953, quickly became a hangout for entertainment industry leaders, and has remained a favorite with rock musicians to the present day.

The connection to the showbusiness world is also deeply personal: Marc Canter, who currently owns the restaurant, was a childhood friend of Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. An iconic photo of the band sitting in one of the booths was taken by photographer Jack Lue. It was also allegedly the scene of a fight between Tom Waits and punk band The Bags. Canter’s is open 24 hours, so stop by anytime for some matzah-ball soup or one of those classic pastrami sandwiches.

Get a glimpse of Capitol Records

Capitol Studios opened its doors over 60 years ago, getting down to business with Frank Sinatra’s Frank Sinatra Conducts Tone Poem of Color. In addition to hosting recording sessions for acts including Green Day, the Goo Goo Dolls and Paul McCartney, the Capitol Records Building is also where a number of hit albums and soundtracks have been mixed, and is where the orchestra for the Academy Awards rehearses and records. The studio is still functioning and busy, and their current artists often record performances on the iconic tower’s roof. Guests are typically not able to tour the studio, though they do occasionally open up for ticketed special events. Tourists are free to take photos in front of the tower and its mural, Richard Wyatt Jr’s Hollywood Jazz .

Discover new music

It’d be impossible to name all the music venues and bars showing live bands in Los Angeles, but if you’re looking for a bar with live music, we’ve got a list of them here (many without a cover charge). For emerging indie acts, it’s worth seeing who’s on the bill at Teragram Ballroom in Westlake, Hi Hat in Highland Park, Silver Lake’s The Satellite , The Echo in Echo Park and The Hotel Café or Three Clubs in Hollywood.

LA boasts almost too many live music venues to name

Frank Lloyd Wright is said to have quipped, "Tip the world over on its side and everything loose will land in Los Angeles," a quote that has since been repeated both by those who love and hate L.A. The "City of Angels" is a city of sharp contrasts, home to people who hail from all parts of the globe and an important center of culture, business, media, and international trade. However, it's most famous for being a major center of the world's television, motion picture, and music industry, which forms the base of the city's status and lures visitors for its show business history and celebrity culture. Visitors are also drawn to Los Angeles for its Mediterranean climate and numerous beaches, which gave birth to California's famed surf culture. California's most populous city and the second most populous city in the United States (after New York City), Los Angeles is spread across a broad basin in Southern California surrounded by vast forested mountain ranges, valleys, the Pacific Ocean, and nearby desert. Los Angeles sits at the heart of a metropolitan area of over 18 million people that spreads across Los Angeles County, Orange County, Ventura County, and the Inland Empire region of San Bernardino County and Riverside County.

Kid Cudi cancels tour: Ankle broken at Coachella is ‘much more serious,’ needs surgery

Kid Cudi is canceling his upcoming Insano: Engage the Rage World Tour after finding out his broken ankle is “much more serious” than he thought.

“Guys, so, I have a broken calcaneus,” Cudi posted Wednesday on social media. “Im headed to surgery now and there’s gonna be a long recovery time. We have to cancel the tour so I can focus on getting better to be out there in top shape to rage with you all.”

Rapper Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi is ‘hoping’ his Coachella broken ankle will be healed in time for Insano tour

Kid Cudi offers an update on the ankle he broke jumping off the Sahara stage on the last day of Coachella 2024. He seems upbeat, albeit a little uncertain.

April 23, 2024

The calcaneus is more commonly known as the heel bone. While some ankle fractures can heal in weeks, a broken calcaneus has a longer recovery time. “This type of fracture commonly occurs during a high-energy event — such as a car crash or a fall from a ladder — when the heel is crushed under the weight of the body,” the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons says on its website . Surgery is often required to prevent heel deformity.

This, friends, is why you don’t jump off one of the tallest stages at Coachella.

“There’s just no way I can bounce back in time to give 100%,” Cudi said. “The injury is much more serious than I thought.”

The U.S. leg of the Insano tour was supposed to start June 28 in Austin, Texas, and conclude with a show in Los Angeles on Aug. 30. Kid Cudi planned to head to Europe in early 2025; it’s unclear whether that part of the tour is still on.

The rapper said that ticket holders will be contacted by email and receive a full refund. Also, new tour dates will be announced as soon as possible.

In a video posted earlier this week and captured by TMZ , Kid Cudi said with a chuckle, “This is what happens when a 40-year-old man tries to prance around offstage like he’s 26, like he used to do back in the day.” He added that he was “hoping” to be healed up in time to hit the road.

So much for that idea.

“I’m so sorry fam and I love you all so much, thanks for the endless love and support. Im really disappointed as im sure you guys are too, but I will be back. Thats a promise,” the rapper wrote Wednesday.

“Im ok, just a lil soreness, but im in good spirits.”
