Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 4 Days

Was an amazing tour! Edy (Puma) and Toro were the best guides we could have asked for, supporting us when we needed and providing us with endless knowledge on Inca history and Andean traditions. The food made by the chefs and the cheerfulness and work by the porters made this trek so wonderful.

My highlight was the Inca trail. Exhilarating, energy sapping but awesome. The guides on the trail were simply the best. Without their guidance, motivation and expert knowledge I don't think I would have made it. I don't think G-Adventures can be beaten.

Everything about this tour was well thought out and executed. The communication between the company and us was the perfect amount. I would recommend this tour to everybody who is looking to see as much in Cusco as possible in a week. I only suggest you moderately active because it is a lot of walking.

I had a great experience with tourradar. Ronald was an amazing tour guide. His passion and knowledge about his culture shone through his words and stories. His patience with our group was comforting. He helped us push through difficult moments in our hike in Machu Picchu and up to rainbow mountain. I highly recommend them.

Premium Peru Tour

Premium Peru

Loved Peru. I found the people take great pride in their cities, culture and history and it shows in how clean the streets are, how great the food is and how wonderful the guides are. Loved the wildlife, the scenery and archeological sites too. My only downside was the airport.. Delayed flights and when trying to return home, no signage to show the directions from domestic (Cusco to Lima) to international section of airport. When I asked for help, I was told to go out the door, come back in the door next to it, only to find out that I needed to go outside, go to section adjacent and then go upstairs to departures which also had no sign there for "international departures". The LATAM staff gave me the run around on my luggage. One person said it would go automatically to Newark another said pick up your luggage in Lima and transfer to United. My luggage never arrived in Lima nor in Newark. When I arrived in Newark the United people said that LATAM was lying as it is never sent on directly and had to be collected and transferred by hand in Lima. I had to file a lost baggage claim upon final arrival in Canada . Still waiting for news.

I absolutely loved this tour. I didn't expect it to be organized well, my friend and I were really surprised with the effort the team put into making our experience as good and comfortable as possible. The meals were DELICIOUS I can't even explain, you need to try it. I requested vegan meals and my friend a vegetarian option and we were both very satisfied with the meals provided. The trek is amazing, every day is such a unique experience that is different from what you've already seen, I loved every part of it.

04 Day Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - Small Group Service

Amazing trip, I can guarantee you’ll have a great time on the five day trip! Manuel was a fantastic guide, always taking care of us and showing us the best of the Inca trail and always making it fun and interesting! We had varying levels of fitness in our group and he guided us with patience and good humour. His in-depth knowledge of the history, geography and local environment was amazing. I loved Machu Picchu, also some of my favorite experiences from the trip were Warmiwañuska or the views from Phuyapatamarca that we experienced as a smaller group. If you are wondering which company to book your Trek with, please, look no further, You just found it. Thank you so much Inkayni Team!! <3

Hiking The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu & Sacred Valley

We were doing the 4 day trip to inca Trail the last year and it was an absolutely amazing experience. My husband and I were hesitating whether to book with one or with another agency, but in the end we decided to trust in Inkayni Peru Tours and we cannot regret about this decision. I was overwhelmed by the friendliness of all the people in Inkayni Team. We did the tour package with Pedro as the guide and Mario as the chef. Both of them were incredibly nice, funny and the food was amazing! Sofia cooked so nice and tasteful. I still dream of his food! Likewise, I want to mentioned that this agency is really trustful and reliable. They stick to their words and give you the best food and the best hotel to sleep in Cusco. Thanks for everything and thanks for giving me the time of my life Inkayni Team ????

The meals were amazing, the porters worked really hard to make our journey seamless. The guide was ok, but should have been 2 and not 1 as the slow people in the group held up the rest of us. The itinerary provided by intrepid prior to the journey was not accurate, especially when it cane to the tipping amounts. The itinerary advised a tipping amount of 120-180 with a certain distribution for our porters and chefs, yet our guide advised a much higher amount with a completely different distribution.

We had a fantastic experience! Eddie and Toro were wonderful guides. They were very educational, thoughtful, and fun. Without them I definitely would not have made it. The chef Balbino made wonderful food, and it was so wonderful to have the guides and porters from the Sacred Valley.
Amazing experience! The tour moves quickly so you see a lot in a short amount of time, which is exactly why I love these types of tours. I couldn't of asked for a better guide or group.

What to See at Machu Picchu

Discover Peru’s most emblematic landmark, the “Lost City of the Incas”. You’ll learn about the history, Incan mythology, and the mystery that surrounds this breathtaking Inca ruin atop the mountains: Machu Picchu.

Inca ruins lining the side of Huayna Picchu, the iconic mountain that looms over Machu Picchu.

Huayna Picchu

Hike to the top of Huayna Picchu for extraordinary views of Machu Picchu as well as the chance to visit an extra set of ruins on the way. Entrance tickets for Huayna Picchu are limited, so be sure to reserve yours in advance.

A visitor walking a stone path on Machu Picchu Mountain, with the ruins visible in the distance.

Machu Picchu Mountain

Another popular hiking option, Machu Picchu Mountain offers incredible panoramic views of the ruins and the surrounding Andes Mountains. Like Huayna Picchu, entrance tickets to Machu Picchu Mountain are limited so be sure to reserve yours in advance.

Visitors resting at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the entrance to Machu Picchu from the Inca Trail.

The iconic Sun Gate (called Inti Punku in Quechua) is the entrance through which Inca Trail hikers enter the Machu Picchu citadel. It is also possible to visit this attraction as an additional hike for those visiting Machu Picchu on a day trip.

The Guardhouse, a site of strategic importance for its bird's-eye view of Machu Picchu.

One of the first attractions you’ll visit on your Machu Picchu tour, the Guardhouse (also known as the House of the Guardians or Guardian’s hut) was once used by sentinels watching over the citadel, but nowadays it makes a great spot for sweeping panoramic photos of the ruins.

The Sacred Rock at Machu Picchu, whose shape resembles that of the mountains behind it.

Sacred Rock

The enormous Sacred Rock (also called a Wank’a in Quechua) bears a striking resemblance to the mountain peaks behind it, and is considered a powerful spiritual symbol of Machu Picchu.

The Temple of the Three Windows, a Machu Picchu landmark consisting of three trapezoidal windows.

Temple of The Three Windows

One of Machu Picchu’s most iconic places, the Temple of the Three Windows overlooks the Sacred Plaza and consists of three windows in the typical Incan trapezoidal style.

The Inca Bridge, a wooden board crossing a gap in a stone path next to a precipice in Machu Picchu.

Inca Bridge

A popular additional hiking destination inside Machu Picchu, The Inca Bridge (Puente Inca) is a thin wooden plank crossing a mile-high precipice found at the end of a narrow stone pathway. Designed as a secret exit, its precarious nature helped to limit access to the citadel.

The Temple of the Condor, a rock formation that was carved by the Incas to resemble a condor.

Temple of the Condor

This natural rock formation which was carved by the Incas into the shape of an Andean condor was an object of worship and represents one of the most striking examples of Inca stonemasonry.

A section of the Stairway of Fountains, an impressive example of Inca engineering capability.

“Stairway of Fountains”

The engineering ingenuity of the Incas can be seen in the 16 fountains built within the Machu Picchu citadel. Likely used by the residents of Machu Picchu, these Incan water fountains still flow with water sourced from a spring near the Sun Gate or Inti Punku.

The semi-circular Temple of the Sun, considered one of the most sacred places in Machu Picchu.

Temple of the Sun

The Temple of the Sun is a semicircular ruin within the Machu Pichu citadel. This site was one of the most sacred temples within the fortress. The trapezoid window is positioned so that on the winter solstice (June 21st), the sun’s rays shine directly into the temple.

The Temple of the Moon, a fascinating temple carved into stone located on the way up Huayna Picchu.

Temple of the Moon

You’ll have to hike Huayna Picchu mountain, within the Machu Picchu citadel, to see the Temple of the Moon. This shadowy temple contains a throne carved into the stone and was used only by the Inca priests for ceremonial purposes.

The famous Intihuatana, a carved stone thought to have been used by the Incas as a type of sundial.

Intihuatana

The famous Intihuatana, whose Quechua name is often translated to English as “The Hitching Post of the Sun,” is a carved stone which is thought to have possibly been used as a type of sundial.

What are Machu Picchu’s operating hours?

Machu Picchu is open from 6:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. every day including weekends and holidays.

Which Machu Picchu tour is best for adrenaline seekers?

The Machu Picchu ruins have two on-site hikes: Huayna Picchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain. Both can be combined with a Machu Picchu tour and take 2–3 and 4–5 hours to complete, respectively. For even more adventure, you can hike over multiple days to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail , Lares or Salkantay treks .

Where should I stay if I spend multiple days at Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu hotel and hostel options are plentiful in Aguas Calientes , the town at the base of the Machu Picchu ruins. Our Top Pick hotels here are:

  • 5-Star Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel
  • 4-Star El Mapi
  • 3-Star Casa Andina Standard Machu Picchu
  • 2-Star Waman Hotel

How many days do I need to tour Machu Picchu?

1–2 days. Two days and one night is the best amount of time to tour Machu Picchu at a leisurely pace: one day to arrive by train and another for the tour and return to Cusco. A whirlwind one-day Machu Picchu tour from Cusco is possible but it will be a long 16–17 hour day.

How long is a guided tour of Machu Picchu?

A guided tour of Machu Picchu is 2 hours long. The ruins operate on a one way circuit that leads to the exit of the ruins and re-entry is not allowed with a Machu Picchu general entrance ticket.

What will I see on a Machu Picchu tour?

A tour of Machu Picchu includes stops at the Guardhouse, agricultural zone, main gate, fountains, tower, temple zone, Temple of the Three Windows, astronomical observatory, Sacred Rock, Group of Three Doorways, royal enclosures, Temple of the Condor and storage area. You will also have views of the west agricultural zone and main square while walking through the ruins.

When is the best time of year to visit Machu Picchu?

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is between April and September. The dry season from May to August offers sunny weather with the best views of the ruins but with more crowds. Shoulder seasons in April/May and September/October offer a good chance of pleasant weather and views and with fewer crowds.

Do I need a tour guide for Machu Picchu?

Yes. Since 2019 it has been mandatory to enter Machu Picchu with a tour guide. You can book in advance or hire a guide at the main entrance.

How much time should I spend in the Machu Picchu ruins?

A tour of the Machu Picchu citadel is approximately 2 hours and operates as a one way circuit exiting out of the ruins at the end of the tour. For most, this is a perfect amount of time to see Machu Picchu. Reentrance is not permitted with a general entrance ticket. If you would like to spend more time at the ruins, you will need an additional entrance ticket or hiking permit.

How difficult is it to walk around Machu Picchu?

Easy–Moderate. Machu Picchu has a well marked path for visitors to follow, with railings where there are steep steps. Although some circuits have fewer steps than others, all visitors must walk up and down stone steps and over uneven paths. This can be tough for those with disabilities and/or joint pain. Elderly and disabled visitors are allowed to use hiking poles with rubber tips.

Contact us to plan your trip to the mind-blowing ancient ruins of Machu Picchu.

Can I visit Machu Picchu in a wheelchair?

No. Machu Picchu is not wheelchair accessible. Regulations for the site’s preservation don’t permit alterations to the Machu Picchu ruins for wheelchair accessibility.

Hidden high in the Peruvian Andes, the Machu Picchu ruins are all that remain of a 15th-century Incan citadel. In its heyday, the ancient fortress was a royal complex of temples, plazas, palaces, and homes. Unlike many other Incan historic sites, the site was inhabited for just 80 years before being abandoned.

Thanks to the steep mountains surrounding the site, Machu Picchu wasn’t discovered by Spanish conquistadors. Evidence suggests that – even though the site remained uninvaded – it was likely abandoned due to the conquests taking place in other parts of the Incan empire.

If you’ve got the time, the most picturesque way of reaching Machu Picchu is by trekking along the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek. Both hikes are outstanding and feature mesmerizing sights, but for slightly less traffic and a more challenging route, check out the Salkantay Trek tour .

If you don’t want to embark on a multi-day hike, you can visit Machu Picchu on a day tour . To make the most of your travels, consider a 2-day Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour . Once you’ve explored the Sacred Valley, you can take a scenic train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town), where you can enjoy a relaxed evening before embarking on your adventure to the famous citadel in the morning. This way, you get to learn about the history of the monument in chronological order and save time traveling.

ico

No matter when you choose to visit, exploring Machu Picchu is an experience like none other. The best time to travel to Machu Picchu depends on what you wish to see and the route you wish to take.

The peak time for visiting the site is winter (May through September), which is the height of the dry season and when you’ll experience the best trekking conditions.

You can reach Machu Picchu by taking the train, riding a bus, or trekking. On your way up, if you’d like to explore the beauty of Machu Picchu Mountain, be sure to have a look at our Machu Picchu hiking tours .

Whether you opt for a picturesque train journey or the lively Salkantay Trek , strolling through the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu is sure to be the adventure of a lifetime.

How to Travel to Machu Picchu

Don’t get lost when you visit the Lost City of the Incas.

machu picchu tour from usa

Chris Marinaccio/Travel + Leisure

Every year, millions of people visit the imposing and mysterious Incan citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru. But getting to the massive agricultural terraces, intricate stone constructions, and epic hilltop views of this UNESCO World Heritage site isn't cheap, and it involves some trickier-than-usual logistics. Here's how to expertly navigate your way to Peru's most famous destination, plus our top tips for enjoying your visits to the nearby cities of Cusco and Aguas Calientes on your way.

Reasons to Visit

Machu Picchu is one of the world's most dreamed-about destinations . Mystery is at the center of Machu Picchu's appeal, as the city holds many secrets about the ancient Incan Empire. Knowledge-seekers will find plenty of interesting tidbits to mull over about the city's archaeological significance and the various scientific and religious practices of the Incans who built the magnificent site.

Alongside this adventure through time, a trip to Machu Picchu offers an opportunity to experience Peruvian culture and gastronomy . If you stay a while, you can even make trips to many of the country's other historical wonders, like the perplexing and enormous images etched into the hills of the Nazca Valley , the origins of which are not entirely understood. Throw in a few dishes of tangy ceviche, a rainbow-striped mountain , a desert oasis that looks more like a painting than a real place, and many pisco sours to wash it all down, and you've got a fantastic trip in one of the world's most naturally beautiful countries .

Best Time to Visit

Machu Picchu is open year-round. October through April is the official rainy season, but it can rain at any time. And while peak season is July and August, you should always expect crowds. Sundays can be the most crowded, because that's when people who live in the Cusco province are allowed into the site for free, in addition to the daily visitor limit.

Morning? Afternoon? There is no perfect time to visit Machu Picchu. These days, the site is crowded at all hours and the weather is unpredictable. However, during the rainy season, the mornings are most likely to be foggy. Depending on your disposition, fog ruins the view or adds a patina of mystery to it. Afternoons can be slightly less crowded as day-trippers return to the train station for their trip back to Cusco.

How to Get Acclimated to the Altitude

The last thing you need on your day in Machu Picchu is a case of altitude sickness . Wherever you're coming from is probably much, much lower than Cusco (over 11,000 feet) or Machu Picchu (just shy of 8,000 feet). Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, so you can adjust gradually and avoid common symptoms like nausea, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

Unless you've booked a trip to Machu Picchu that requires an overnight stay in Cusco, we recommend immediately taking the train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (officially called Machu Picchu Pueblo), the town nearest Machu Picchu. Spend a night or two getting used to the relatively low elevation of Aguas Calientes, at about 6,700 feet, then explore Machu Picchu before returning to Cusco. You can also spend time elsewhere in the Sacred Valley, which, by nature, is lower in elevation than the surrounding mountains. Avoid alcohol and physical exertion while acclimatizing and drink as much water or coca tea as you can stand to help your body slowly adjust to the thinner air.

How to Get There

If Machu Picchu is your goal, you will have to fly into the capital of Lima and then catch a connecting flight to Cusco. From there, the easiest way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to take the train to Aguas Calientes, a scenic 3.5-hour trip each way along tracks that run right along the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley, with dramatic canyon walls on either side. However, note that the so-called Cusco train station is actually in the nearby town of Poroy. It's a cheap taxi ride, but give yourself at least an hour to get from central Cusco to the train station. Traffic in Cusco can be brutal and seemingly never-ending road work makes things even more congested.

Taking the Train

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

There are three train companies to choose from: Inca Rail , Peru Rail , and the Belmond Hiram Bingham train . The Hiram Bingham service is on a gorgeous train gleaming with brass and polished wood and includes a white tablecloth meal with wine during your journey. It's also much more expensive than Inca Rail or Peru Rail, both of which offer comfortable passage on different types of trains — including ones designed with panoramic windows for an additional fee. Whichever train you choose, book as far in advance as possible. Tickets sell out weeks ahead in some months.

If train tickets from Cusco are sold out, all is not lost. Try to buy another train ticket to Aguas Calientes that departs from the town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, or vice versa. Taxis and minivans between Ollantaytambo and Cusco (just over an hour each way) are plentiful. If you have the time, plan an overnight in Ollantaytambo to check out the town, which still features many Incan-built streets and buildings, as well as the archaeological site of the same name. Arrive as early as possible at the site to enjoy the sunrise light and beat the tour buses.

You can also stay overnight in Urubamba, a 20-minute drive from Ollantaytambo, which has a bevy of luxury and boutique hotels such as Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa ; Sol y Luna, Relais & Châteaux ; and Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness .

How to Get Tickets

Even when you buy your ticket in advance, guides are required at Machu Picchu, whether you're on an organized tour or traveling independently. Hire one outside the gates, or make a booking in Aguas Calientes.

To control overtourism at Machu Picchu, the Peruvian government has set up a ticketing system , split up into five different circuits. Tickets must be purchased in advance and cost approximately $42 for adults and $20 for students and minors. When you book online, you will be able to see exactly how many tickets are available for that day. On the day of your visit, you will choose between one of the five circuits. The stricter controls help to protect the site from the effects of too many visitors. Before you book, carefully look at the circuits and see which landmarks they include.

You'll need a separate ticket to climb Huayna Picchu (Circuit 4 + Wayna Picchu Mountain). The view looking down on the Incan ruins is a highlight for many but be aware that some sections of this strenuous trail are very narrow and steep. You'll have the choice of starting your climb between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Go at 10 a.m.; there's a better chance any clouds will have lifted by then.

You can also climb to the peak of Machu Picchu, but this too requires a separate ticket (Macchupicchu Mountain + Circuit 3) and good knees. The trail is almost entirely stairs. You'll have the choice of starting your climb between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Although it was open in the past, you will also need a separate ticket to make the short walk to the Inca Bridge (Circuit 1 or 2 + Inka Bridge). It's less than an hour round trip along a mostly flat trail to check out a precarious trail, now closed, which the Incas built along a rock face. The newest route, as of 2021, to Huchyu Picchu (Circuit 4 + Huchuypicchu Mountain) is also available with a separate ticket. It's shorter and easier than the other mountain hikes and you'll get a unique perspective of the ancient city.

The Inca Trail and Other Treks

Chris Marinaccio/Travel + Leisure

The other way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to walk as part of an organized multiday Machu Picchu trek along the Inca Trail, a section of one of the hundreds of Incan roads built as the empire expanded. It might sound intimidating, but thousands of people make this trek every year. Dozens of tour operators offer Inca Trail hikes to Machu Picchu, with varying durations and levels of comfort (though all require camping). Note that the Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu is closed for the entire month of February every year for maintenance.

For a different kind of Peru experience, some tour operators combine a visit to the iconic site with other activities or less-trodden routes to equally impressive sights in the Peruvian highlands. For example, the Inca Jungle Tour combines hiking, biking, rafting, and zip-lining on your way to Machu Picchu, and luxury tour operator andBeyond offers several Machu Picchu itineraries.

You can also drive (most of the way) to Machu Picchu from Cusco to the town of Hydroelectrica (there's a hydroelectric plant there). From there it's a three-hour hike up to Aguas Calientes and then on to Machu Picchu. Many tour companies in Cusco offer this route as a one- or two-day trip using private vans. Some of the most popular alternative routes include Salkantay Mountain, the second city of Choquequirao, and the Lares region.

Salkantay Mountain

For those who prefer a less crowded experience or want to see and experience other aspects of Peru on their way to Machu Picchu, there are many hiking alternatives: the second most popular way to hike to Machu Picchu is around massive Salkantay Mountain, one of the most imposing peaks in the Peruvian Andes at 20,569 feet. Many tour companies offer Salkantay Treks, but Apus Peru, an established and well-regarded Cusco tour company with a focus on sustainable and responsible tourism, offers an express trek , which shaves a day off the normal itinerary for those who want to push their physical limits on their way to Machu Picchu.

Choquequirao

Travelers interested in archaeology should consider the Choquequirao trek with a Machu Picchu extension. This itinerary includes spectacular (but very tough) hiking in the steep Apurimac Canyon and exploration of the Choquequirao archaeological site before arriving in Aguas Calientes and then exploring Machu Picchu.

The Lares Adventure from Mountain Lodges of Peru offers a great combination of Andean hiking and cultural encounters within Quechua communities before arriving in Aguas Calientes to explore the citadel. Other tour companies offer treks through the Lares region, but only this itinerary includes luxury accommodations in their own lodges and full service along the way.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Unfortunately, there are no ancient Incan hotels you can stay in when you arrive at Machu Picchu, and even those who arrive by the Inca Trail usually do so with camping tents. The closest you can get is the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge , which gives you easy access to the site, but you'll be far away from the dining and shopping of Aguas Calientes — either a strenuous 90-minute climb down the mountain or a harrowing 30-minute drive.

Where to Stay in Aguas Calientes

For a luxury stay in Aguas Calientes, you have two main options: the elegant Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo , located near the train station, and design-forward Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel , a boutique property near the foot of Machu Picchu Mountain. But there are dozens of mid-range options, too, plus super-affordable hostels for backpackers like Nativus Hostel , which also has private rooms.

Where to Stay in Cusco

Cusco has more than its share of large, full-service hotels including Inkaterra La Casona , an 11-suite hotel in a 16th-century mansion; Belmond Hotel Monasterio in a former Jesuit seminary; the museum-like JW Marriott El Convento Cusco ; and the stately Palacio del Inka, A Luxury Collection Hotel . If a contemporary boutique is more your style, try El Mercado or Atiq Boutique Hotel .

Best Restaurants

When you're in Machu Picchu, there's a casual cafe and bar with a lovely deck just outside the entrance gates, but the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge's buffet lunch is your only sit-down-restaurant option. It's very good, if pricey. You can always pack your own lunch to eat when you get to Machu Picchu, though, and look forward to a celebratory meal when you make it back to Aguas Calientes or Cusco.

Where to Eat and Drink in Aguas Calientes

As a whole, Aguas Calientes isn't exactly on the cutting edge of Peruvian cuisine. But walk down Av. Pachacutec and you'll find low-key eateries and bars, some serving a selection of Peru's growing crop of craft beers. There are also high-end restaurants inside the two luxury hotels, Inkaterra and Sumaq, which are open to non-guests. More low-key traveler favorites include Restaurante Indio Feliz , serving up French-Peruvian dishes, and Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant , where you can pair local specialties with craft beer from all over the country.

Where to Eat and Drink in Cusco

Significantly larger than Aguas Calientes, Cusco is one place where you should have no problem finding great restaurants. Cicciolina is a classic tapas bar that feels like a local hangout, serving international and Andean dishes out of an open kitchen. Kion, from the growing Cusco Restaurants group , is a stylish place to enjoy Cantonese cuisine. The decor is Chinese vintage, the flavors are subtle, and the atmosphere is festive.

Chicha is the first restaurant in Cusco from Peruvian superstar chef Gaston Acurio of Astrid & Gastón fame. Located on the second floor of a Colonial building, the restaurant offers haute Andean cuisine (alpaca carpaccio, quinoa with duck) in an airy and well-lit space. After dinner, you can head to Cholos pub near the main plaza, which keeps around a dozen different Peruvian craft beers on tap. Peruvian owner Rodrigo Cardenas is passionate and knowledgeable about all of them.

Best Things to Do in Machu Picchu

When you arrive at the citadel, you'll have to follow the route outlined on your ticket so you may want to study up on some of the city's most exciting sites before you decide. Among the most important are the Sacred Stone, an astronomical clock that corresponds with the spring and autumnal equinoxes, and the Temple of the Sun, which is a great example of the Incans' impressive masonry skills.

During your visit, make sure you have some spare cash (small bills and coins) in your pocket because you will need them to access the only bathroom at the site entrance. You will also need your passport to get into Machu Picchu, which means that to use the bathroom or grab food you should have your passport ready. Hang onto your ticket because you'll need it to get back in. It may seem like a hassle, but you'll be glad you have it on you because just outside the entrance gates, there's a barely marked station where you can get the novelty Machu Picchu stamp in your passport.

On your way to Machu Picchu, you'll also find several interesting attractions in Aguas Calientes and Cusco.

Things to Do in Aguas Calientes

The town takes its name from the thermal springs, which are open to the public for a small fee. You'll also find plenty of souvenir shops at the major market near the train station. While Machu Picchu is the main attraction, of course, you can also visit the Mariposario de Machupicchu butterfly sanctuary .

Things to Do in Cusco

Cusco's pre-Columbian buildings have given this city UNESCO World Heritage status , and its cobblestoned streets, great hotels, museums, nearby archaeological sites, and relaxed atmosphere make it worth spending at least a couple of days here.

Cusco is filled with historic sites both from the Incan and colonial times: don't miss the impressive Coricancha (also spelled Koricancha or Qorikancha), an Incan temple-turned-Spanish church; the Sacsayhuaman Incan ruins; and the Cusco Cathedral. Wander through the streets of the hip San Blas neighborhood, people-watch on the Plazas de Armas, and shop at the San Pedro Market.

Accessibility

Travelers in wheelchairs can access the Peruvian world wonder with the help of tour companies like Wheel the World , which designed the first-ever wheelchair-accessible tour of Machu Picchu. You can contact the company to learn more about their services and their custom wheelchairs that are specially made to travel over the many steps and uneven terrain of the ancient city.

Packing Tips

Whether you're planning a multiday trek or a quick in-and-out day trip, you should be prepared to dress for mountain conditions . Bring water and a rain jacket, even if it looks like a beautiful sunny day. Speaking of the sun, remember that the ozone layer over Peru is compromised, and that, combined with the elevation, makes the sun extremely strong here, so wear a hat and use plenty of high SPF sunscreen. Keep insect repellant handy as well.

Don't bring drones, umbrellas, walking sticks, or trekking poles since they're all prohibited at Machu Picchu. Travelers who require sticks or poles for mobility can bring them in but only with protective rubber tips over the ends.

Colombia is a great place to visit throughout the year because of its proximity to the equator. Although the official dry season is from December to March, the Caribbean coast and Medellin experience warm, dry weather all year round. The tourist high season is December to February and areas like Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park can be crowded during this time. Generally, Colombia requires light clothing suitable for warm to hot weather. During these months, the nights in the highlands can become chilly in areas of higher altitude so travelers should pack layers for when the sun goes down.

The lowlands enjoy similar tropical temperatures year-round but more frequent rain showers occur in April to June and again in October and November.

Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon climate is wet all year long. Pack very light clothing but long sleeves and trousers to prevent mosquito bites during the evenings. It is also essential to have waterproof clothing in preparation for downpours.

The style of clothing worn by local Colombians generally depends on the region they inhabit. To fit in with the locals, pack a selection of light, summer-friendly options for visits to tropical Cartagena and a variety of big-city brights and fashionable nightwear for cities like Medellin and Bogota. Dressing in lightweight, easy-dry layers is a great way to stay cozy and comfortable throughout your trip to Colombia as the weather varies in each region depending on the time of day you travel.

Residents throughout Colombia pride themselves on being fashion forward and formal dress is often expected for fancy dinners and night-time activities. Male visitors may wish to purchase a Guayabera, or “fancy white shirt” after they arrive in Colombia as these garments are favored by locals and are considered acceptable attire for nearly any social situation within the country.

One of Colombia’s most popular national parks, Tayrona National Park, encompasses the Caribbean coast from the Bahía de Taganga near Santa Marta to the mouth of the Río Piedras. Tayrona National Park includes beaches, a rainforest, and even an arid landscape with cacti and light-brown hills in the western section. The park is home to at least 56 endangered species.

NATURE RESERVE

Birders and wildlife enthusiasts shouldn’t miss El Dorado Reserve, considered to be a Holy Grail for birding in the Americas. This 1,600-acre reserve hosts the highest concentration of continental, range-restricted bird species found anywhere in the world, just a two hours drive from the tourist city of Santa Marta. You can also find endemic and threatened amphibian specie, as well as local flora and fauna.

A historically infamous city, Medellin is now gaining attention for its incredible rebirth and inventiveness. Colombia’s second-largest city even beat cities like New York and Tel Aviv to be awarded “World’s Most Innovative City” in 2013. Known as the ‘City of Eternal Spring’, the area boasts pleasant temperatures year-round and supports lush botanical gardens in its picturesque location in the Aburrá Valley. This vibrant city is filled with public art, modernist architecture, and impressive museums, but the party really starts when the sun goes down and rhythms of Colombian Salsa and Vallenato music fill the air. This city likes to eat, drink, dance, and watch soccer in its numerous bars and restaurants.

Little is known about the natives who inhabited the area that is now Colombia before the Spanish arrived in 1500.

Shortly after arriving, the Spanish established the colony of New Granada and built the settlement of Santa Fe de Bogota, which subsequently becomes known as Bogota. These new colonies thrived and many African slaves were taken to these cities to assist with building and maintenance. After a 14-year struggle, Simí³n Bolívar’s Venezuelan troops defeated the Spanish at the battle of Boyacá in Colombia in 1819. The resulting Republic of Gran Colombia united Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, and Ecuador as a single country under one central leader. Due to regional differences, Gran Colombia dissolved in 1829-1830 when Bolívar lost Venezuela and Ecuador to separatists.

In the 19th century, Colombia was a troubled country and suffered eight civil wars between its liberal and conservative parties as conservatives believed in a strong central government and a powerful church while liberals believed in a decentralized government, strong regional power, and a limited role of the church. Political instability continued through the late 19th century and culminated in the War of a Thousand Days which began in 1899 and resulted in the death of nearly 120,000 people.

In the early 20th century, social legislation was introduced and Colombia was generally peaceful and without conflict – trade unions were encouraged, the economy developed and the export of coffee increased. This period of rest was short-lived however and the assassination of the well-liked and respected left-wing mayor of Bogota in 1948 caused riots and began a civil war that lasted until 1957.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the situation in Colombia improved. In 2000, the United States pledged $1.3 billion to fight drug trafficking with “Plan Colombia”. Violence in Colombia declined after 2002 when President Alvaro Uribe increased Colombia’s security, aggressively campaigned against the drug trade, and passed several economic reform bills.

In 2012, the United States-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement (CTPA) went into effect. This agreement eliminated tariffs and other trade barriers to the exchange of goods and services between Colombia and the United States. In the early 21st century, the Colombian economy grew rapidly and poverty and unemployment declined. Today, Colombia is booming, tourism is increasing and the country has a bright future.

History of Peru

The history of Peru (before the Inca era) as we know it today has been uncovered, in large part, through large archaeological excavation endeavors. Historical artifacts including ceramics, textiles, and cave drawings have been collected, sorted, and displayed throughout Peru’s archaeological museums – a collection of clues as to the lives of Peruvian inhabitants who lived and worked nearly 20,000 years ago. Advanced hunting tools and well-planned irrigation systems lead many to believe that these early colonies were cutting-edge, organized, and well-established.

The Incan empire ruled from around 1400 A.C. to 1500 and is widely considered one of the largest dynasties in American history before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. This small tribe of peoples was based out of Cusco, which served as the country’s capital city throughout Inca rule. Machu Picchu is one of the most well-preserved ruins left behind by the Incan peoples, and thousands of tourists flock to visit the historical site’s peak each year. The Incas grew to be one of the largest and most powerful forces in South America and had a complex and interesting society that is well studied to this day.

Spanish soldiers arrived in the South American land in 1532 and began plotting to take over the rule of the fertile and bountiful country. These European soldiers brought smallpox and other illnesses into Peru, killing thousands of “New World” inhabitants including Huayna Capac who served as the 11th Inca or King. Capac’s sons were each given half of his kingdom and a civil war that began between the brothers helped to quicken the downfall of the Incan empire. Spanish rulers changed the capital of Peru from the land-locked Cuzco to coastal Lima to accommodate arriving soldiers and facilitate trade.

Peru’s Independence Wars were fought from 1810 until 1824 when a battle led by General Antonio Jose de Sucre secured freedom from Spanish rule. Peru continued to fight for freedom throughout the 1800s and 1900s – defeating Spanish rulers in 1866 and losing a large piece of land to Chile in a war that spanned from 1879 to 1883. A war with Ecuador in 1941 over borders wasn’t resolved until 1998 when Peru agreed to allow Ecuador access to the Amazon rainforest in exchange for keeping control over the land.

In 2001 Peru elected its first Native Indian President, Alejandro Toledo. The country has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of South America and thousands of tourists visit to hike, swim, shop, and to learn more about Peruvian history firsthand through the exploration of archaeological sites and artifacts each year.

What to See in Peru

Peru is one of the most popular countries for tourist travel in South America. Although visiting Machu Picchu tops the bucket list of many adventurers worldwide, seasoned explorers know that this beautiful and eclectic country is not just a one-stop destination. Learn more about the top five things to do when visiting Peru below.

MACHU PICCHU

Machu Picchu is one of the most famous archaeological sites in all of South America and the popular peak has definitely earned its reputation for awe-inspiring views. Voted one of the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2001, the “lost city of the Incas? contains so many historical monuments and examples of Inca architecture – it’s best to have a tour guide to walk you through the history, legend and folklore surrounding this mystical place. Travel to the peak of this historical mountain by hiking, or via a spectacular train ride via Ollantaytambo train station.

CUZCO (SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS)

This colorful city was once the capital of the Incan empire and remains a cultural hotspot to this day. This exciting town is extremely close to Machu Picchu and provides an excellent resting point for travellers who are looking to spend a bit of down time before they hike the popular summit. Visit an indigenous market in Pisac to purchase handmade crafts and to sample authentic Peruvian foods or take a brief hike throughout the cities’ ruins that previously made up the Incas’ agricultural system.

HIKING THE INCA TRAIL

This 26 mile trek isn’t for the faint of heart – but the satisfaction gained by finishing this challenging expedition more than makes up for the struggle of navigating a historical land. From beautiful mountain scenery to tropical jungle, hikers experience the beauty and wonder of many Peruvian landscapes. Begin your hike by crossing Cusichaca (aptly named “The Bridge of Happiness?) and plan to spend around 6-8 hours hiking over a four day period to cross the finish line and enter Machu Picchu.

LAKE TITICACA

This large and diverse lake borders Peru and Bolivia and is home to over 500 species of aquatic life. Visit the floating islands of the Uros people to learn about a unique community with a spectacular way of living – or spend time in the small town of Puno, where folklore is cherished and celebrated in weekend festivals and markets.

COLCA CANYON & AREQUIPA

Peru’s epic Colca Canyon is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and is home to large families of spectacular Andean Condors. Plan your trip from the comfort of Arequipa, a nearby town that offers hiking, hot springs and magnificent views.

Peru is one of the most popular destinations for travelers to South America and popular tourist areas offer a variety of hotels, hostels and lodges that are as diverse and eclectic as the country itself! Our local guides have an intimate knowledge of the Peruvian landscape and know which locations provide the best experience overall for tourists and travelers alike. We partner with high-quality hotels to make sure each and every guest has the adventure of a lifetime. Read on to learn more about some of the lodging options we offer for custom tours to Peru!

Hacienda Urubamba exterior

Peru is one of the most diverse countries in Latin America – with warm coastal deserts, cool rainforests and even snowy mountain regions. Located south of the equator, Peru experiences weather patterns that are opposite to those experienced by individuals living on the East Coast of the United States – so cold and snowy weather in Boston is a likely indicator of warm and sunny skies in Lima. If you’re planning to see everything that this amazingly unique country has to offer, you’ll need a wide variety of clothing options to keep you comfortable throughout the trip.

The weight limit for checked luggage on most internal flights, including Cusco and the Amazon is currently 20 kilos (44 pounds) per person. If you are over that limit, you’ll likely need to pay a surcharge.

Large suitcases are not permitted on the train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu, although these cases can be stored securely at the lodge during excursions. A small weekend bag is recommended as you’ll need a change of clothes and essential items when travelling to Machu Picchu overnight.

The typical dress code throughout the country is functional and casual – female travellers may want to bring one dress and a pair of dressier sandals for night-time outings or fancy dinner reservations.

Packing lightweight layers is an easy and effective way to make sure you’re prepared for any climate – fabrics should be waterproof whenever possible to allow for protection during short and sudden rainstorms.

What-to-Pack-Peru

Peru is made up of three distinct geographical subsections, each with their own weather and temperature patterns. The country is split (N to S) by the Andes mountains and contains parts of the Amazon jungle in the East. Although each of these locals experiences slightly different weather patterns, November through March is generally considered to be the “Wet season? and April through October is generally considered to be the “Dry season? throughout the entire country. Read on to learn more about the best times to visit Peru on your next vacation!

COASTAL REGION

Temperatures are generally warm throughout the year and the coastal region usually experiences little rainfall. High daytime temperatures (80+ F) and lower nighttime temperatures (50+ F) make for a relaxing vacation. The city of Lima can get quite foggy from April through October but the sun breaks through clouds the further out from Lima you travel. The capital city is warm and humid from November through March.

ANDES / MACHU PICCHU

Expect high temperatures and dry climates from April through October – although temperatures vary by altitude so light layers are encouraged for those planning to visit the peaks of Machu Picchu. Sudden, heavy showers occur from November through March so raincoats are a must.

AMAZON RAINFOREST

Humidity is high throughout the year and rainfall should be expected from November through March. Warm days and cool nights demand layers for travelers who expect to be outside for long periods of time.

History of Ecuador

Ecuador’s written history as we know it today begins with the concentration of early cultures of indigenous peoples throughout coastal areas that supported the majority of inhabitants from as far back as the year 9000 B.C. These early pioneers lived relatively peaceful lives in small clans and large tribes who survived by fishing, hunting, and eventually farming on the region’s fertile land. These wandering tribes eventually settled down into permanent societies including the Valdivia peoples who created intricate ceramic pottery creations, the Quitus peoples (after whom Quito is named) and the Caras who enjoyed considerable power and prestige in the region until the mid 1400’s when the small country was invaded by the Incas of Peru.

The Incas were ruthless in their pursuit of power over Ecuadorian land and many lives were lost defending the area – to no avail. Quechua, an Inca language still widely spoken in Ecuador was introduced to natives at this time and many great buildings and cities were built throughout the region. The Inca empire enjoyed its rule over Ecuador until the mid 1500’s when Spanish forces took the land in yet another series of bloody battles that ultimately led to the total conquering of Ecuadorian peoples. A period of enslavement ensued, and Spanish rulers continued to profit from the work of Ecuadorian citizens until major worldwide financial depressions caused economic downfall in the period between 1700 and 1800.

This collapse allowed for the possibility of native revolt and Ecuadorians from all walks of life banded together to retake the cities once ruled by their ancestors. Ecuador became fully independent in 1830 – but internal power struggles created a period of instability and fear. Democratic leadership and free elections in the 20th century helped to create a more peaceful society that has prospered over time – and tourism quickly became one of the fastest growing industries in this small South American hotspot.

Ecuador Packing List

Ecuador’s unique landscape includes four diverse subregions that all have individual weather patterns and climates – so travelers should consult with their individual itineraries to pinpoint which areas they will visit during their stay. Although some areas (like Guayaquil and the Ecuadorian Amazon region) experience extremely high, humid temperatures at times during the year, other locations (like the country’s’ capital city, Quito) have consistently mild temperatures that hover below seventy degrees (fahrenheit) throughout the year.

If you are travelling to several regions during your stay, packing a suitcase full of light layers can help to accommodate temperature changes and keep you comfortable during your stay. Some areas at high-elevations experience light snowfall during the winter months, so a fleece jacket is recommended for travel during that time. All fabrics should be quick-drying as short rainshowers are common in many areas around the country.

The primary currency used in Ecuador is the US dollar and many personal-hygiene items are available for purchase so don’t bother loading your suitcase full of shampoo, toothpaste or the like. Purchasing clothing and shoes can be difficult, especially large sizes, as the average Ecuadorian is shorter than US travelers. No matter what region you will visit during your stay, make sure to pack a pair of comfortable walking shoes that have been broken in before your trip to ensure comfort throughout your visit.

When to Visit Ecuador

Ecuador is a small country with a hugely diverse population and a wide variety of biologically unique plants and animals. The peak travel season for tourists runs from June through September and from December through January – although stable weather patterns create a friendly environment for visitors throughout the year. There are four major climate zones in Ecuador, so tourists are able to plan travel around the current climate of each zone.

The Andes Region, including Quito and the Andean Highlands experiences cool and dry temperatures throughout the winter season which lasts roughly from June through September. Warmer temperatures are enjoyed during the summer months (December through March) but this time period is also considered the country’s rainy season so visitors can expect to experience a few showers during their travels.

The Amazon region experiences rainfall year round but temperatures are generally high – reaching 90+ degrees fahrenheit throughout the year. Heading towards the Pacific Coast region, travelers can expect high temperatures and sunny days, mixed in with short rainshowers during the day. Cooler temperatures and cloudy skies from June to September mean it will be too chilly to swim during the dry season in this area.

Finally, the Galapagos Region experiences dry weather and cool temperatures from June to December with rainy conditions and warmer weather starting in late December and lasting until May.

Galapagos Islands Descriptions

Located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands are made up of 13 main islands and 48 islets. Scattered over an area of 36,000 square miles around the equator, none of the islands have ever been connected by land to any mainland area. The Islands are entirely volcanic and are considered to be one of the largest and most active sets of oceanic volcanoes in the world. The formation of the Islands began between three and five million years ago, very “young” in geologic terms. Volcanic eruptions broke through the ocean floor and initiated the building of underwater mountains, which continued to grow with successive eruptions and form the Galapagos Islands. The islands are still active today with new eruptions typically occurring in the western part of the archipelago.

History of the Galapagos

The first visitors to the Galapagos Islands were Native Americans from mainland South America . The islands bear no archaeological remains of dwellings or other structures, so it is quite unlikely that any native colonies were ever established there. Pirates and renegades first inhabited the islands during the early 1500s. They would hide and camp out on the islands after raiding Spanish colonial ports. Due to their inhospitable nature and lack of water, the Spanish paid the islands little attention, giving them the name “Las Encantadas” or bewitched islands.

A new period began in 1832 when Ecuador proclaimed its sovereignty over the islands. There were only a handful of permanent settlers at that time but their number had increased to around 300 by 1835 when the HMS Beagle arrived with Charles Darwin on board. Darwin spent five weeks in the Galapagos collecting and preserving specimens from four separate islands. His field observations led him finally to conclusions published in On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859. The first Galapagos colony was established on the island of Floreana. The archipelago experienced many attempted settlements from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century by individuals from Norway, the US, and the UK. During World War II, a United States Army Air Force base was established on Baltra Island. From Baltra, crews patrolled the eastern Pacific for enemy submarines and provided protection for the Panama Canal.

Galapagos Packing List

Perfecting a packing list for the Galapagos can be difficult – even for the most seasoned traveler. The close proximity of these small islands to their home country of Ecuador means that domestic flights will likely be utilized at some point during the trip – so packing light is a must for individuals who wish to make weight limits for their flights! Individuals who will be flying from Quito should dress appropriately for the cool weather in the Ecuadorian town – a waterproof jacket is ideal and can be used several times throughout your trip.

The fewer things you actually bring on your trip to the Galapagos, the better – but tours often begin or end in other destinations that might require more substantial luggage arrangements. Packing a small, lightweight backpack that can act as a weekend bag is a great way to make sure you aren’t stuck with a ton of luggage on your trip. The Island’s proximity to the equator makes them a prime target for harsh sun rays, so a high UV blocking sunscreen is absolutely essential for any traveler who visits during the day.

Water shoes can be useful in protecting feet from coral and plant life so plan on packing an already-broken-in pair of comfortable sandals. If you’re heading out on a Galapagos cruise or chartered boat, make sure to speak with the captain to learn more about the luggage storage options available during your trip!

Galapagos Cruise vs. Land-Based

When making this once-in-a-lifetime trip, travelers have two main options to explore the islands: either through a land-based trip or a boat-based cruise through the islands. Find out what to expect and the relative advantages of each so you can choose the best option for making your Galapagos dreams come true.

What to Expect on a Galapagos Cruise

Your home for the duration of your Galapagos visit will be a live-a-board boat of your choice, ranging in size from 16-100 passengers. You will eat, sleep and relax on this vessel, which will be your base for the duration of your 4, 5, or 8-day expedition. Each morning, after a hearty breakfast, you will disembark into a 16-passenger dinghy, known locally as a “Panga” The Panga will take you for wildlife excursions, either onshore, or at snorkel sites. Your Galapagos naturalist guide will deepen your understanding and appreciation of the local wildlife, either on land or in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. After a morning of close encounters with some of the famous species of the area, you return to the boat for lunch and to prepare for the next excursion as the vessel navigates to another visitor site. Usually, your afternoon excursion will take you to a completely different island to add a whole new perspective to your Galapagos experience.

Advantages of A Cruise:

  • Once you arrive in the archipelago, you can unpack your bags once and for all you’ll stay in the same room on the vessel for the entirety of your stay.
  • Cruises are the most efficient way to visit the archipelago, especially remote islands without any human habitation.

What to Expect on A Galapagos Land-Based Trip

On land-based trips, you stay in eco-lodges or hotels in the port towns on the islands of Isabela, Santa Cruz, and San Cristobal. While you don’t visit as many islands as a cruise-based trip, land-based trips allow you to explore fewer islands in greater depth. From your land-based, you can get intimately acquainted with the island, independently exploring the wonders of the Galapagos in a small, private group with a Galapagos naturalist guide. Although it is impossible to visit as many islands as you would by sea, land-based trips will allow you to enjoy a variety of activities. For example, in the evenings relish fresh seafood at a family-run eatery then go for a sunset walk on Isabela’s beach and observe marine iguanas crawling out of the ocean onto the pristine white sand. During the day, active explorers might opt for sea kayaking, hiking on a dormant volcano, or mountain biking among coastal mangroves.

Advantages of a Land-Based Trip:

  • Land-based excursions allow you to spend more time on each island, with opportunities to visit multiple sites and engage in a variety of activities.
  • You will have more flexibility to experience the islands according to your own schedule and interests.

Both of these modes of exploration will allow you to meet most, if not all, of the iconic Galapagos species and expose you to many of the island’s distinct treasures. While your preference may depend on whether you prioritize flexibility or efficiency in visiting multiple islands, you cannot go wrong with either way of experiencing this extraordinary place.

Please fill out the form below and we will be in touch with you shortly.

Best time to visit galapagos, wildlife year-round.

Because most of the wildlife remains on the islands year round, there’s always a lot to see. No matter when you visit, you’re guaranteed to encounter one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the planet!

The Galapagos Islands have a sub-tropical climate with two seasons, the Hot Season and the Dry Season. The seasons on the islands are set and defined entirely by the ocean currents that surround them. The Hot Season starts in December and gradually works its way until May . During this season, warm waters from the Panama Current move south and bath the islands creating tropical conditions. Seas are generally calm, and the warmer temperatures and evaporation cause occasional tropical showers, which turn the islands green and lush. Air temperatures are hot and humid and range from 79 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The water temperature averages 77 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a great time to enjoy the warmer waters for snorkeling and to view green sea turtles that come into the islands to breed.

From June to November, the cooler Humboldt Current runs up the west coast of South America carrying rich oceanic upwellings from Antarctica that stimulate the breeding season for sea lions and sea birds. A desert spreads gradually in this tropical paradise. Evaporation decreases and this forms a thin layer of clouds over the islands that opens and closes throughout the day. This is known as the Dry Season with air temperatures ranging from 72 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit and sea temperatures averaging 67 degrees Fahrenheit (a wetsuit is recommended for snorkeling). This is the best time of year for observing dancing boobies, courting albatrosses, baby sea lions, whales, dolphins, and whale sharks.

Can I add the One Day Inca Trail to my Peru trip?

We are able to add the One Day Inca Trail to a number of our existing Peru itineraries. Please contact us to discuss the different options available to you.

Do you need a permit?

While you don’t need the same permit you need for the Inca trail, places are limited so you must pre-book this option at least 30 days prior to departure. We will arrange all the necessary paperwork on your behalf.

How does the One Day Inca Trail work?

On trips where the One Day Inca Trail is included, the day begins bright and early with a 6:30am train ride to the starting point. With a local guide leading the way, the trail will lead uphill and downhill, passing a few archaeological sites. See Winayhuayna (2680 metres), also known as 'Forever Young'. This impressive complex is considered by many to be most impressive site on the whole Inca Trail, and is made up of a terraced agricultural centre, religious sector and urban sector. From here, it's about a one-hour trek to Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), where (weather permitting), you'll enjoy unforgettable views over the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ as you enter Machu Picchu. Depending on how long the trek takes, you'll have a guided tour of the area for 1.5 to 2 hours, with time to take photos, before taking a short bus ride down to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town).

When is the high season at Machu Picchu?

The high season for trekking in Peru runs over the drier months from April to October. The most popular time to hike to Machu Picchu is in June and July – which is therefore the most crowded time.

When is the rainy season at Machu Picchu?

The wet season runs from November to March – this is when the temperature rises, and the region receives heavy rainfall. The Inca Trail closes every year in February (the wettest month of the year) for maintenance.

How high is Machu Picchu?

The altitude at Machu Picchu is 2430 metres (7970 feet) above sea level.

Is the One Day Inca Trail a difficult trek?

The One Day Inca Trail is 15 kilometres (just over 9 miles) in total. The first 10 kilometres are uphill and can be pretty steep, but if you have a moderate level of fitness you should be fine. The trek takes about 4 hours at leisurely pace.

Is there a minimum age requirement for children?

While there is no official minimum age for hiking the trail, we do recommend children be at least 10 years old. While the trail can be completed by a person with moderate fitness, it is worth considering whether your child would be able to meet the physical requirements of the trek.

Is altitude sickness common?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 metres (6561 feet) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of travelling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your leader at once if you feel unwell. We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking any medication.

What is the suggested amount I should tip the local guide?

For the One Day Inca Trail, we suggest you tip the local guide between PEN 10 and PEN 20.

What are the toilets like on the One Day Inca Trail?

Basic toilet blocks are situated along the Inca Trail. We recommend you bring some toilet paper and a bottle of hand sanitiser.

What should I pack?

You shouldn’t need too much to complete the One Day Inca Trail, but we do recommend bringing a small day pack containing essentials like water, sunscreen and snacks, as there are few opportunities to purchase food at Machu Picchu. If you wish to bring walking poles you may, but they are not essential.

How do we get back to Cusco?

After spending the day exploring Machu Picchu, you will take a train and bus through the Sacred Valley and back to Cusco. You also have the option to walk back to Cusco if you want, which takes between 45 minutes and one hour.

Can I do the One Day Inca Train if I have a disability?

Yes, but of course it will depend on your specific condition, fitness and what support will be available to you. Contact us to discuss your circumstances and we can assess you from there.

Is it possible to skip the One Day Inca Trail even if the tour includes it?

Yes, it is always possible to skip trekking components on our trips, with no extra charge. Simply speak to us at the time of booking and we can discuss alternative options for you, such as a train to Machu Picchu.

Responsible trekking

Intrepid Travel is absolutely committed to ensuring the environmental sustainability of the amazing destinations we visit and we take our social responsibilities very seriously. In Peru , we have committed to paying our porters and guides a fair wage and supplying them with the necessary equipment and resources to undertake their work safely. We also support several community initiatives aimed at promoting the long-term sustainability of the region's environment and preserving the traditional cultures of its communities.

Here is everything you need to know to plan a trip to Machu Picchu.

How to Get to Machu Picchu

A hike around Machu Picchu is a must-do if you're visiting Cusco, Peru.

Note: Some of the below destinations may be affected by the civil unrest in Peru. Check with the U.S. Department of State before traveling.

Machu Picchu is thought to be one of the largest and most impressive Incan cities of its time. Today a UNESCO World Heritage Site with expansive ruins open to visitors, it sits high on a peak in the Peruvian Andes and is accessed via train or on foot. Here are some tips to help you navigate a visit to this incredible archeological site.

What is Machu Picchu? Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Incan city that was abandoned by the Incas after the Spanish conquest. The ruins feature about 200 structures that were used for religious, agricultural, astronomical and ceremonial purposes, though exactly how remains a mystery. It's believed that between 300 and 1,000 people inhabited the city and the area was devoted to the worship of the sun god.

Where is Machu Picchu? Machu Picchu is located in the Peruvian Andes within a tropical mountain forest at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. Cusco , the nearest major city, is less than 50 miles southeast of Machu Picchu.

When was Machu Picchu built? Historians believe that Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century.

How do you get to Machu Picchu? Machu Picchu can be reached a variety of ways, including hiking the Inca Trail with a tour company, by train or by bus.

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu? The site is located in the Amazon rainforest in Peru, where the rainy season runs from November to March. To avoid rain, travelers may want to visit during its dry season from April to October. Travelers say that June through August tends to be the busiest, so opting for shoulder months like May or October may help avoid crowds.

Know Before You Go

  • What: Machu Picchu tours
  • When: Machu Picchu is accessible daily with entrances from 6 a.m. to noon or noon to 5:30 p.m. During the month of February, the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance and is inaccessible to visitors.
  • Cost: Entrance tickets cost approximately 152 Peruvian soles (about $45) for adults; 77 soles (around $23) for students.
  • Must-know tip: To tour Machu Picchu, you must purchase your ticket online in advance and print it out as no tickets are sold at the site. Experts and fellow travelers recommend purchasing your ticket several months in advance as there only 2,500 visitors allowed per day. If you choose to visit with an organized tour company, the company will take care of reserving and purchasing the ticket for you.
  • Website: https://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/inicio

When visiting Machu Picchu, you will be given a specific time you can enter the site. Key attractions include the Temple of the Sun, the Room of the Three Windows, the water irrigation system and the Royal Mausoleum. There is an additional fee to visit the mountains of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu, which surround the old city, should you want to hike trails there. After you purchase your ticket – either to Machu Picchu or the site with one of the mountains – be sure to print your ticket and bring it with you along with identification, such as a passport.

Restrooms are located outside the entrance and cost about 2 soles (around 60 cents) to use; there are no restrooms within Machu Picchu. There's no visitor center, but Peru's Ministry of Culture does have an office in Aguas Calientes, a town that acts as the gateway to Machu Picchu. There are also a variety of restaurants in Aguas Calienties to refuel after your trip. Be aware, you also may not be allowed to bring single-use plastics (like sandwich bags) or large bags into the site. If you do bring a large bag, there is a bag storage facility near the site's entrance where you can leave your bag for a small fee as you explore the site.

Machu Picchu is located less than 50 miles northwest of Cusco, a Peruvian city which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cusco can make a great base for your visit to Machu Picchu as many organized tours to the site begin here.

Since Machu Picchu and Cusco sit at high elevations, almost 8,000 feet above sea level, travelers should prepare for altitude sickness. Talk to your doctor before your trip to make sure your body can handle the altitude change. When you arrive, help your body adjust by getting plenty of rest for the first few days, avoiding alcoholic beverages and drinking lots of water to remain hydrated. You should also plan to wear insect repellent and plenty of sunscreen for the trek. Travelers also recommend dressing in layers and wearing pants and long sleeves, even if the weather is warm, as the mosquitos are known to be relentless.

Tour Options

Though you can opt to visit Machu Picchu (and make the necessary travel arrangements) by yourself, a guided tour can help streamline the process. Multiple tour operators offer daytrips to Machu Picchu. The majority of these tours originate in Cusco and leave early in the morning (at or before 5 a.m.). You'll be taken via bus to the town of Ollantaytambo, where groups board trains to Aguas Calientes. From Aguas Calientes, groups board a bus to Machu Picchu. Travelers generally spend approximately two hours at the site before they begin the trip back to Cusco. Exact tour prices vary, though you can expect to spend approximately $300 per person (including train tickets, bus fare and a guided tour of the site). Travelers generally enjoy the tours, extolling the knowledgeable guides, and appreciate the ease by which they could see Machu Picchu. Others caution selecting your tour company carefully as experiences can vary wildly from company to company.

Travelers can also opt to hike from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu on their own via the Carretera Hiram Bingham. The approximately 4-mile journey is a steep climb and can be completed in around 90 minutes. Though an option, most travelers say the walk is long, difficult and lacking in scenery.

Tourists who have ample time, or have a true adventure streak, can hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The approximately 25-mile trail takes about four days to hike and ends at Machu Picchu. To hike the Inca Trail, you must go with a tour company or hire a guide, as it is no longer permitted to hike the trail on your own. Keep in mind that the trail closes each February for maintenance. Tours can last as little as two days (for an abbreviated journey along the trail) or more than a week to experience additional Peruvian sites.

There are a variety of other attractions and ancient sites nearby Machu Picchu that you may want to add to your itinerary. Titicaca Lake, located at more than 12,000 feet above sea level, is the largest lake by volume in South America. The town of Cusco also has much to see, including cathedrals , temples and a plaza used in Incan times , along with many archeological sites. Take advantage of the Cusco Tourist Ticket (also known as Boleto Turistico del Cusco), which grants access to many of Cusco's attractions for one fee.

Getting There

You can reach Machu Picchu by foot, train or bus, though if arriving by train, your ride will end in Aguas Calientes and you will need to ride a bus or hike approximately 4 miles to access the site. You can take a train from one of several stations near Cusco to the city of Aguas Calientes and then ride a bus to Machu Picchu. (Note: Since these train stations are outside Cusco city proper, you'll need to take a bus to get to them). The train ride via Peru Rail takes about four hours and you can choose from a variety of train types, each with a different price point to accommodate any travel budget. Tickets for Peru Rail are available at PeruRail.com.

You can buy bus tickets from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu in advance in Cusco at the Consettur offices, which helps you avoid lines at the actual bus stop. Buses depart from Aguas Calientes approximately every 15 minutes beginning at 5:30 a.m. daily until 3:30 p.m. Visitors recommend getting in line for the bus several hours before your scheduled entrance time at Machu Picchu as lines can be extremely long. Some travelers report getting in line three hours before their scheduled entrance time. You'll also likely encounter lines to take the bus from Machu Picchu back to Aguas Calientes.

FAQs about Tours to Machu Picchu in Peru?

How works the group tours.

The standard of our tours to Machu picchu is to be done on a “Regular” basis, which means that we share the tours with other travelers. For the comfort of our clients, we work with groups of a maximum of 10 people per guide on treks, for cultural tours 16 people per guide. For your convenience, you can contract the tours in a private service only for you and your group. Just check with our Travel specialists for that.

How far in advance do I need to book my trip?

For the Inca Trail the sooner you book the better (at least 6 months in advance). Because the access ticket to the Inca Trail is limited to 500 people per day (and during the month of February it is closed). Besides the limited number of tickets, the Inca Trail is one of the most popular in the whole world! The ticket for the Inca Trail is nominal and the purchase is only made upon payment.  So, the sooner you can organize and secure your ticket, the better.

For Cultural Tours to Machu Picchu from May to September that include WaynaPicchu Mountain it is recommended to book at least 4 months in advance, because these months are very busy and there are limited places for Machu Picchu and Wayanpicchu Mountain.

It is always better to book in advance to guarantee everything.

Which train is better, expeditions or Vistadome?

The Expedition train is the most recommended for those who are going from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes after doing the Sacred Valley of the Incas tour because the train departure time is more compatible with the end of the tour. Also, the trip takes place late at night. Therefore, there is not too much view of the journey and it is a considerably short trip.

One of the advantages of the Vistadome is that its windows are wider than those of the Expedition (and more comfortable as well). Therefore, for trips from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, the Vistadome train is recommended, because this route is usually done in the afternoon and the passenger can enjoy the landscape along the way. In addition, the journey from Aguas Calientes to Poroy takes 3.5 hours and during the trip, the Vistadome offers entertainment and on-board service included.

Is it necessary a good physical condition and acclimatization for hikes?

Due to the high altitudes, hiking in Peru requires a good acclimatization and physical condition. In other words, the traveler must be well adapted to the altitude. In addition, physical fitness is recommended for the trekking due to the variations in the route, which generally includes steep elevations in some sections, parts with steps of varying sizes, different types of ecosystems, etc. The best thing to do in Peru is to talk to your doctor first and ask for help from a serious and specialized agency to give you the necessary support.

When do I have to arrive in Cusco for my trek?

So that you do not have problems with the weather, you must arrive in the city of Cusco at least 2 days before the start of your trek. This in order to be able to adapt to the elevation, prepare for the trek.

You can also take advantage of these two days by doing some cultural tours while you adapt.

What do i need to board with a minor?

To board a minor unaccompanied by a legal parent or guardian on our tours to Machu Picchu, it will be necessary to present documentation and authorization completed and signed, according to guidelines of the Federal Police.

If the minor has a recent Passport, containing the boarding indication to which he/she is authorized, then the boarding may be done according to this document.

The dry season runs from May to October, the busiest months is from June to August. For this period it is recommended to book early in advance.

How to prevent altitude sickness or soroche?

If you are going to a high altitude destination such as Puno and Cusco, it is important to be aware of altitude sickness. This disorder usually occurs when traveling to areas with an altitude much higher than the usual altitude of your country of origin. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and include headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and difficulty breathing.

Here are some suggestions to counteract altitude sickness:

  • Exercise a few days before leaving for your high altitude destination.
  • Upon arrival at your destination do not immediately go out to explore, take a couple of hours to rest.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, and drink plenty of water.
  • On the first day of your arrival eat as much as necessary, and avoid fats, spices and spicy foods.
  • Do not exert yourself physically the first two days upon arrival at your high altitude destination.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1 . do i need to be fit to go to machu picchu.

The level of fitness needed will depend on how you are planning to visit Machu Picchu. If you are travelling to Machu Picchu by train, then you do not need to be fit. Machu Picchu is at a lower altitude than Cusco, so you will be well acclimatised before you embark on your train journey.

If you are planning to trek to Machu Picchu, then a reasonable level of fitness is advised and the fitter you are the easier you will find the trek, and the more you will probably enjoy it. It is also recommended that you spend at least 2 days acclimatising in Cusco before your trek to try to prevent altitude sickness whilst on the trail. This is especially important if you have arrived from sea level, for example from Lima. Cusco lies at 3,400m and the highest point of the Inca Trail is at 4,200m.

2 . What should I pack when visiting Machu Picchu?

This will depend on whether you are travelling to Machu Picchu by train or trekking along the Inca Trail or one of the other trails. If travelling by train you will need only a day pack with items such as camera, water bottle, sunscreen, sun hat and sunglasses, change of clothes if staying overnight, rain jacket and fleece jacket, passport and small amount of money.

If you are trekking, then you will need to pack accordingly and be prepared for extremes of climate from freezing to hot. We recommend the following:

• Daypack & rain cover

• A soft trek bag

• Sleeping bag (-5°C) (if not provided)

• Rain jacket & waterproof trousers

• Walking boots

• Complete change of clothing

• Socks/underwear/thermal underwear

• Trekking trousers or zip-off shorts

• After trekking trousers/shirt/sandals

• Warm layers (e.g. fleeces and/or lined jacket)

• Gloves, scarf and wool/fleece hat

• Water bottle and sterilising tablets

• Flashlight/torch & spare batteries

• Broad-brim or peaked cap

• Sun block & lip balm

• Sunglasses

• Insect repellent

• Toiletries, toilet paper & small towel

• Selection of small snacks such as chocolates, dried fruit, biscuits, etc.

• Camera (in plastic bag or dry-sack) with spare memory cards, batteries

• Cash (for minor purchases on trek, tips, souvenirs, lunch in Aguas Calientes etc.)

• Money belt

• Trekking poles (optional) – must be rubber tipped

• Personal First Aid Kit to include painkillers, plasters (Band-Aids), moleskin, antiseptic cream, after-bite, anti-diarrhoea tablets, throat lozenges, re-hydration salts & personal medication

3 . Is it safe to travel to Machu Picchu?

In general it is safe to travel to Machu Picchu and there are not the same issues as might be found in larger cities, where you need to be much more vigilant. Train stations can be crowded so be aware of pickpockets. As with travel throughout Peru we recommend the following to minimise security risks:

• do not show any outward signs of wealth or wear expensive jewellery

• keep your valuables in your hotel in safety deposit boxes

• keep any valuables that you must carry with you hidden, as pickpockets can be present in crowded areas and around tourist areas

• use only registered taxis with official identification

• avoid going on your own to remote areas/ruins where tourists would not be expected to go

• always keep your day pack and camera close to you and never leave them unattended.

4 . Do I need a visa to travel to Machu Picchu?

A pre-arranged visa is not required to enter Peru for citizens of the following countries:

• Australia

• United Kingdom

• The United States

• New Zealand

• European Union

• South Africa

For other nationalities please visit the website of the relevant consulate.

5 . How long do I need to travel to Machu Picchu?

Again this depends on how you plan to visit Machu Picchu. It is possible to visit Machu Picchu in a day by train from Cusco, or an overnight trip can be organised with accommodation in Aguas Calientes or even closer to Machu Picchu. If you plan to trek in, there are a range of treks available from 4 days to 7 days.

6 . Do you need a permit to climb Huayma Picchu?

There is an entry fee for anyone wanting to trek up Huayna Picchu and permits need to be secured in advance. The number of daily visitors allowed to enter Huayna Picchu is restricted to 400 and permits are on a first come first served basis. Please ensure that you advise us at the time of making your Peru booking if you would like to hike this mountain.

7 . How high is Machu Picchu and what is the highest point on the various trails to Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is located at 2,430m. The highest point of the Inca Trail is 4,215m at the top of Dead Woman’s Pass; the highest point on the Salkantay Trek is at 4,600m and on the Lares Trek it is 4,550m.

8 . What money do they use at Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is one of Peru’s must-see highlights. The unit of currency in Peru is the Peruvian Nuevo Sol (PEN). The US Dollar is widely accepted throughout the country and prices are often given in both US dollars and Soles. Please check websites such as www.oanda.com or www.xe.com for up to date exchange rates prior to your departure.

9 . How much should I budget for daily in Machu Picchu?

Generally transport, entrance fees and guides will already be included in your tour price and so you will only need a small amount of money to cover meals, tips to guides and souvenirs.

10 . What language do they speak at Machu Picchu?

Spanish is the official language of Peru, spoken by more than 80% of the population. There are also many indigenous languages including Quechua and Aymara. In recent years an increased effort has been made to promote all of the indigenous languages.

11 . Do I need to get vaccinations for visiting Machu Picchu?

Although no specific vaccinations are required for Peru travel and no proof of any vaccination is required to enter Peru, we recommend that you visit your doctor or a traveller’s medical centre for current information specific to those places that you will be travelling through. As a general guide we recommend the following:

• Yellow Fever - Especially for jungle areas

• Hepatitis - Both A and B (twinrix)

• Diphtheria

3 day Machu Picchu Tour

We’ll start the day with a prompt meeting time of no later than 9:00 am at your hotel, ensuring that we make the most of our time together.

Our first stop is the impressive Incan site of Sacsayhuaman. This ancient Incan religious fortress, composed of massive boulders, sits perched on a steep outcropping overlooking Cusco. From this vantage point, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the city while gaining insight into the important religious and ceremonial significance of this site. After Sacsayhuaman, we’ll visit the Inca site of Pukapukara, a small Incan site located in a very scenic spot.

Returning to the city by private transport, we’ll take you to some of the local sites not typically included in other city tours. Our first stop is the bustling San Pedro market, a hub of activity where locals gather to start their day. Here, we’ll explore the stands that sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to meats and medicinal plants, giving you an authentic glimpse into daily life in Cusco .

Next, we’ll embark on a tour of the most significant historical sites of Cusco, including the Plaza de Armas and the Main Cathedral (access to the interior is optional, and admission tickets are not included). We’ll also visit Qoricancha – the Sun Temple – the most sacred Inca temple dedicated to the Sun God. Though the temple was destroyed by the Spaniards upon their arrival, the existing foundation was used to build a colonial church, making for a fascinating mix of architectural styles and cultural history.

As our tour draws to a close, we’ll walk you back to your hotel, leaving you with a newfound appreciation for the rich heritage and vibrant spirit of Cusco. We hope this experience inspires you to continue exploring and seeking out new adventures in all corners of the world.

What is the lost city of Machu Picchu?

During the height of the Inca Empire’s power, around 1450, Machu Picchu was likely constructed. Pachacutec Yupanqui 1438–1471 and Tupac Yupanqui 1472–1493 , two Incas, ruled the Empire during this time.

The Peruvian state designated this Inca citadel as a Protected Natural Area in 1981 due to its impressive cultural and natural attractions and well-preserved ecological environment.

UNESCO also gave it a World Heritage Site designation. Up to 350 bird species, 200 orchid species, ten ecological zones (from glacial peaks to tropical zones), a network of Inca trails, and numerous archeological sites can all be found in this sanctuary. The mythical city of Machu Picchu is not the least, though.

Where is Machu Picchu located?

Machu Picchu is located 80 km (50 miles) northwest of  Cusco (Peru) at 2,430 hotels, 450 meters from the Urubamba River. It is about 112 kilometers from Cusco by train. This Inca site is encircled by massive, steep mountain ranges, divided by slender valleys and vast ravines. Machu Picchu National Park is necessary for its archaeological value and various ecosystems.

Travel to Machu Picchu

No trip to Peru is complete without visiting  Machu Picchu (“Old Mountain” in Quechua) .

One of the last citadels found in the Peruvian Andes, Machu Picchu, is visited by tourists who preserve its ground-breaking archaeology. Visit the Cusco region of Peru and find incredible adventures and landscapes that will leave you speechless with their beauty, without a doubt.

Machu Picchu Entrance Schedule

The ruins of  Machu Picchu open at 6 a.m. Machu Picchu’s new entrance times begin at 6:00 a.m. to noon. Also, you can visit between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. with a maximum time of three hours if you have a general Machu Picchu ticket.

On Machu Picchu, is luggage permitted?

Large backpacks are not permitted at the Machu Picchu site. Twenty-five liters is the maximum size allowed. You can leave your luggage in the hotel’s storage space in Aguas Calientes or the lockers at Machu Picchu.

Exist restrooms in Machu Picchu?

There is a restroom at the entrance of Machu Picchu; be sure to visit the bathrooms before entering. There are no restrooms inside the Inca city. The cost is approximately 0.75 USD.

How do I get to Machu Picchu in Peru?

Get to Machu Picchu by Train : Several train stations depart train services at different times, such as the San Pedro, Poroy, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo, and KM 82 train stations. If you hire Kondor Path Tours, you won’t have to worry. You’re welcome since our transportation will accompany you on the contracted excursions, and our tour guides will handle everything.

Get to Machu Picchu Tour on hikes : Kondor Path Tours offer you excellent and spectacular walks through the Andes and the Amazon from Cusco to the northwest, such as the Inca Trail 04 Days and the Inca Trail 02 Day s if you are an adventure seeker. These two mountain routes are a fun experience and world-famous.

Appreciating the hike to Huayna Picchu Mountain

In Quechua,  Huayna Picchu   means Young Mountain, and although it has a little-known name, this mountain appears in all the best-known photos. Exploring it often attracts adventurous visitors to the historic Machu Picchu sanctuary.

The climb up is moderately challenging; you’ll encounter narrow paths and breathtaking scenery. Since the hiking trail is one-way, the descent is on the opposite side, allowing you to see both sides of the mountain in one spectacular journey.

Hotel to Hotel service

Regarding the transportation provided by Alpaca Expeditions, we are committed to delivering a quality service. We strive to ensure that passengers feel supported throughout their journey. To achieve this, we coordinate closely with our guides and representatives to ensure timely pick-up at the start of their tours. Additionally, we have representatives responsible for escorting our passengers to their hotels at the conclusion of any tour.

hotel to hotel service

Our drivers are not only trained in customer service but also come properly uniformed, and many are fluent in English.

Typically, all transportation types are included in each of our services. For instance, if you have booked a trekking tour, we will pick you up early, typically between 4 AM and 5 AM. When visiting Cusco, it's important to note that traffic here is generally moderate. However, there are peak traffic times, such as between 7 AM and 8 AM, which coincide with school hours, and in the evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Therefore, if you have a flight during these times, it's crucial to be at the airport at least 2 hours in advance. The drivers of Alpaca Expeditions ensure their vehicles are prepared with all necessities before each service. They are acutely aware that delays can lead to missed trains, flights, or other connections. Consequently, they are always more than punctual, arriving at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time for any service, understanding the responsibility they carry in executing these tasks.

Personal Porter of 7KG

Remember that Alpaca Expeditions offers an extra 7 kg allowance for your personal belongings on any of our tours. We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag without any additional fee. You will not have access to your duffel bag until you reach your evening campsite. The bag should not exceed 7 kg, which includes 4 kg for clothes and 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

personal porter

Each Alpaca Expeditions porter is paid directly after each trek, allowing them to return home more quickly. They receive better wages than our competitors, health insurance, and all their equipment free of charge, including hiking boots, pants, jerseys, fleeces, jackets, hats, flashlights, sleeping bags, and high-quality food. We ensure each of our porters has a comfortable bed in a pleasant room to sleep in before and after each trek. We also visit the communities they live in, providing toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and other necessary supplies to their families, along with books for their children.

This is just the beginning for us, and we are always looking for ways to do more. While the government allows each porter to carry up to 25 kg, we limit this to 20 kg to prioritize their health and safety. Each porter carries up to 15 kg of company equipment and 5 kg of personal items. This is why it is crucial to keep your personal duffel bag weight under our 7 kg limit. You might see other companies allowing their porters to carry more than the allotted weight, but at Alpaca Expeditions, we strictly adhere to these limits to ensure our porters' well-being.

Clases de Cocina

Alpaca Expeditions offers its passengers the chance to experience local cooking. We aim to immerse trekkers in Inca life by walking them through the original Inca paths and teaching them about Inca culture. Food is a significant part of Inca life, making it a special element in any tour or trek with Alpaca Expeditions.

cooking classes

In 2022, Alpaca Expeditions introduced a cooking class as part of each of our treks, conducted by our amazing trekking chefs and interpreted by our guides.

We will transform your dining tent into a makeshift kitchen, providing all the necessary supplies to prepare a Peruvian specialty. Your chef will guide you step by step through the process of making a traditional Peruvian meal, such as Lomo Saltado, and share some essential mountain cooking tips.

Peru is recognized as a top culinary destination, largely thanks to the popularity of our renowned beef dish, Lomo Saltado. This is most often the meal you will learn to cook, but there is also the opportunity to learn how to prepare other dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche or even our signature drink, the pisco sour.

Cooking Class on the Inca Trail: These classes are voluntary and designed to be a fun, educational experience. Our clients consistently marvel at the amazing ability of our chefs to create culinary magic on a mountaintop. As you learn to prepare and cook Peruvian specialties, you will also see firsthand how such elaborate meals can be created on a small campsite stove.

Enjoy a cooking class in the mountains and be sure to take plenty of photos, just in case your friends won't believe your incredible experience.

Satellite Phones

The best way to hike in the mountains of Peru is to completely disconnect from technology, especially the internet and cell phones. The most impressive and exciting aspect is the opportunity to experience the true and wonderful nature that we often miss when we are at home, watching TV or absorbed in our cell phones during our leisure time. The feeling of being disconnected from work and the daily routine left at home is incredible.

satellite phones

However, this remoteness means limited access to emergency resources. That's why Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones for every trek.

We are prepared to assist you in case of any emergency, particularly health-related issues. For this reason, Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones, as they are one of the most crucial tools for any operator trekking in remote areas where telephone or television signals are absent. This means that every guide on our treks will be equipped with a fully charged satellite phone as well as radios. While these are primarily for emergencies, we allow our clients to use them at any time.

We ask that you cover the cost, which is $2.50 per minute. This fee can be paid in cash at our office or via PayPal once you have completed the trek.

Being just a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured of their safety. Radios, which all our guides carry, have limited reach, so Alpaca Expeditions includes satellite phones to ensure that we can connect no matter where we are on the mountain.

Portable private toilet

We understand that our clients will need restroom facilities at various times and locations during their journey. Along the Inca Trail, there are restrooms available, particularly those belonging to the communities near the trail. Alpaca Expeditions provides portable toilets to enhance this service, which will be set up at each meal site or campsite.

toilet tent

As with any mountain trip where we are exposed to nature, it is possible to use natural areas as restrooms. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the waste we generate, such as toilet paper or wet wipes used for cleaning. These should be carried with us and not discarded on the ground or left along the trail. Remember, the Inca Trail is a protected area overseen by a government institution. In places where garbage bins are unavailable, particularly at our camps, we provide special plastic bags for waste. Our porter team will be responsible for carrying out our waste.

Please be aware that although there are designated bathrooms for men and women, in practice, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between men's and women's bathrooms. Therefore, it is common for people of all genders to use whichever bathroom is available.
