What is Vrbo?

How does vrbo work, how to rent on vrbo, is vrbo safe, how to cancel a vrbo reservation, what to do if you have issues with a vrbo reservation, how to save money on vrbo, is vrbo better than airbnb, vrbo vacation rentals, recapped.

Whether you’re going on vacation, looking for medium-term apartment rental while you work and travel, or just simply prefer to stay in unique accommodations rather than hotels, you have options besides Airbnb. One of those choices is Vrbo, an online marketplace that connects homeowners who are renting out their place with people looking for vacation rentals.

Furthermore, Vrbo participates in One Key Rewards , a unified loyalty program allowing travelers to earn and redeem rewards across Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com. If you're considering renting a vacation rental on Vrbo, here's what you should know before you book.

Vrbo is short for Vacation Rentals by Owner, and it's a website that does exactly what it sounds like. Vrbo is an online vacation rental site where property owners can list their homes for rent, travelers can book them and Vrbo handles the transaction.

Vrbo properties range from massive cabins in the mountains ideal for a group ski trip to more conventional homes in the suburbs to unique dwellings, like Costa Rica's "Cockpit Cabana," where you actually sleep inside of an airplane.

Vrbo launched in 1995 as an online vacation rental marketplace and was acquired by HomeAway in 2006. After travel giant Expedia Group acquired HomeAway in 2015, Vrbo fell under the Expedia umbrella. Then in 2020, the two brands — HomeAway and Vrbo — merged into a single Vrbo website.

In 2023, Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com joined together to create One Key, which is a loyalty program allowing members to earn and redeem rewards across all three platforms. Airbnb doesn’t have a rewards program , so although Vrbo is a smaller player, by joining One Key, it provides something to loyal travelers that Airbnb doesn’t.

Staying overnight in a vacation rental like a Vrbo can sometimes be cheaper than hotels (especially when traveling in groups), as you can often find multiroom properties that fit multiple people. In addition, the rentals commonly include amenities like washing machines and kitchens, allowing you to pack less and cook more. Sometimes Vrbo provides the best and only lodging available, especially if you're traveling to remote areas not served by hotels.

But renting on Vrbo isn't always as easy as booking a hotel. Unless the property is listed as "Instant Book," you'll have to submit a request to the owner to book it, adding one more bump in your trip planning. In addition, some properties have minimum stay requirements, and maximum stays sometimes pop up.

Throw in the fact that you're staying in a nonstandard property, and you should expect inconsistencies that you likely won't find when staying at hotels, whether it's the types of available amenities, the check-in process, or the condition of your rental.

If you're ready to rent on Vrbo, here's what you need to know to improve the odds of it being a smart money move .

In addition to offering a loyalty program, another key differentiator between Vrbo and other vacation rental platforms is that Vrbo only allows you to rent entire, private homes. Contrast that with competitors like Airbnb that allow shared spaces, and Vrbo rentals mean you'll never stay on a property while the owner (or other guests, for that matter) are also living there.

The available listings vary in quality and amenities, cancellation policies, and the number of guests allowed.

Vrbo's platform has about 2 million hosts worldwide (almost half of the 4 million hosts that Airbnb claims).

Set up an account on Vrbo

To get started on Vrbo, you'll need to create an online account, which entails simply entering a name and email address. From there, you're offered several optional pieces of information to hand over, including a short bio about yourself and your photo.

There's also the option to verify your identity. If you choose to, Vrbo asks you to provide your physical address and birth date. Vrbo then attempts to verify that info and — if successful — will flag your account as a verified guest.

Filling out those optional boxes is typically a wise move, as most rentals require you to request a reservation (and the host can choose to accept or reject your request). A verified account increases the odds that your booking request will be accepted.

By the way, hosts won't see all the identity information you provided. Instead, they'll only know that you're a verified guest — as well as receive some basic contact information, like your email and phone, so that they can get in touch with you about your trip.

Finding your rental

To find a Vrbo rental, use Vrbo's array of filters to narrow a search on the website after inputting your preferred dates, destination and the number of guests. Filters include the more standard options you'd expect, like the number of bedrooms, availability and price.

manage your trip vrbo

Use Vrbo's filters to find your perfect rental.

Vrbo also has robust filters that drill down on the minutiae of your dream vacation rental. You can filter by property type and it's not just limited to a house or apartment. Zany home types are included, such as castles, lodges and yachts. You can also sort by nearby activities (with options including skiing, fishing, theme parks and breweries) and whittle it down by property features such as pools, cribs or outdoor grills.

When you select a listing, you'll be able to see an assortment of photos, a detailed description of the property and reviews from past guests.

During your Vrbo selection process, base your decision on the property description and not just the photos, as photos might not capture the whole experience.

It's also wise to read recent reviews, as a beautifully crafted description accompanied by aesthetically pleasing photos doesn't necessarily translate to having a great experience. Likewise, a poorly photographed home could still be great. After all, you'd probably prefer that your host is an expert in hospitality, not photography.

Also, understand cancellation policies, as they can vary by property. For example, the strictest cancellation policies are completely nonrefundable, while more flexible policies offer a 100% refund if you cancel at least 14 days before check-in.

If you have a question about a property, you can message the host directly from the property page. Once logged in, select the "Contact Host" link located on the right side of the listing details page, and fill out the form with your message. You can expect a response from the owner within one or two days. If you don't hear back, consider booking a different rental.

Vrbo Premier Hosts

You might also opt to filter your search results by Premier Hosts, who have a special badge displayed on their property listing pages to designate their status. Premier Hosts are reviewed quarterly by Vrbo and selected based on factors including low cancellation rates, high review scores and the number of bookings.

Booking and paying for your Vrbo

Once you've settled on the place you want to rent, you need to determine how to book it next. The steps generally fall into two categories: 24-Hour Confirmation or Instant Book.

24-Hour Confirmation: Submit a request to book, and the host has 24 hours to accept or decline.

Instant Book: Your booking can be confirmed without waiting for the host to accept.

For both options, you'll have to enter your arrival and departure dates, the number of adults and children in your group, and whether any pets are coming. You can also include optional rental notes for the host.

manage your trip vrbo

You can include a message for your host at checkout and see the full price (typically more than the advertised price given various taxes and fees).

On top of the booking rate, most properties also include additional fees such as cleaning, which the host sets. In addition, Vrbo also tacks on its service fee.

Some hosts also require that you leave a card on file, put down a refundable damage deposit or purchase property damage protection to cover any damages you may cause.

Vrbo always handles the transaction, and it accepts Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

Don't consent if the host messages you to pay separately. Hosts who request cash, check or money transfers could be scamming you.

The timeline for making payments can vary. Some properties require you to pay upfront in full, while others let you break it up into two or three smaller payments.

Even if your host requires full payment upfront, there's a way you can pay in installments because of Vrbo's partnership with Affirm , a point-of-sale loan company. Affirm allows you to book your vacation rental and pay it off over time, even past the dates of your stay. However, Affirm is only available to qualified customers and only on specific properties in the United States.

Checking in

The check-in process varies by Vrbo rental, but you can typically expect to access your property either through a lockbox with a key inside or through a door that opens by a code.

Three days ahead of your stay, Vrbo will send you an email with check-in information provided by the host, including how to access codes or keys to enter, the property address, cancellation policy and additional host contact information.

If you have a question ahead of or upon arrival, reach out to the host, as they (or one of their property managers) are likely to be nearby and can help you.

Checking out

The checkout and locking up process varies across Vrbos, much like checking in. Don't be surprised if your host has specific cleanup instructions or other requests; however, many will ask that you leave the house as is.

Most likely, your host will share details about your checkout process either before or upon arrival.

In theory, yes. Vrbo is a legitimate vacation rental service with safety precautions in place to mitigate risks. But ultimately, this is a business where strangers enter your home — and you enter a stranger's home — so issues can arise.

Safety measures between guests and hosts

Vrbo does not conduct background checks on guests. In contrast, competitor Airbnb does conduct background checks. Instead, Vrbo offers badges for people who may be more trustworthy.

As a guest, you can get a "Verified Identity" badge added to your account, earned by providing your address, birth date and other personal information, which Vrbo verifies. Hosts will more likely accept your request if you have one of those badges.

Meanwhile, hosts can receive a "Premier Host" designation. Although that won't necessarily dive into their criminal record, the Premier Hosts title is doled out by Vrbo (and reviewed quarterly) to hosts who have exemplified positive attributes, including low cancellation rates, high review scores and the number of bookings.

premier hosts airbnb

Listings can be filtered by Premier Hosts, which have a badge on the listing photo showing off their status.

Safety measures for money

Your payments are protected against fraud as long as you pay through Vrbo. That way, if your money ends up in the hands of someone other than the host, Vrbo will refund you. Don't agree to make a deal for cash outside the app.

Safety measures for natural disasters or travel advisories

If a natural disaster like a hurricane, earthquake, or tornado has impacted a trip you're currently on — or your destination has suddenly undergone a travel advisory — you can contact Vrbo through the contact button on its natural disaster page. If you haven't left yet, Vrbo recommends contacting the host first to discuss the next steps. Then, if there are still issues, contact Vrbo.

Vrbo's stance on surveillance devices

Vrbo allows surveillance devices in some capacity. In general, surveillance devices are never allowed inside homes, aside from smart devices (like Amazon Alexa) or baby monitors. But even in those instances, owners are required to disclose their locations to guests and give guests the option to deactivate them.

Outside the home, surveillance device usage can be more liberal. For example, security cameras and smart doorbells can be used for security reasons as long as their location and coverage are disclosed to guests. However, from there, rules around outdoor surveillance devices are relatively vague.

They include:

Areas where guests have a reasonable expectation of privacy (say, an outdoor shower), should not be under surveillance.

Reasonable measures should be taken to limit access to surveillance data.

Surveillance data should be deleted when no longer needed.

Vrbo is generally considered safe, but that doesn't mean risks are off the table. Safety issues can happen at any form of lodging. But since Vrbo doesn't scout out individual properties, some additional risks might not be as common at a standard hotel.

To cancel your Vrbo reservation, sign in to your account and go to the "My Trips" tab, then select "Change or cancel trip." From there, you'll be able to review your property's cancellation policy. If you are automatically eligible to cancel for a full refund, then you'll be able to select the "Cancel booking" button. Otherwise, select the "Request cancellation" button, submitting your request to the host to process.

Cancellation policies vary by property and host, but they'll be spelled out on the listings page so you can see them before you book and pay. For example, the most flexible Vrbo cancellation policies let you cancel up to 14 days before check-in for a full refund. Meanwhile, other listings are entirely nonrefundable.

If it turns out that your rental has serious issues (or if the host is entirely unresponsive), turn to what Vrbo calls its "Book with Confidence Guarantee." For no additional cost to you, Vrbo promises to help you if the owner unexpectedly cancels your reservation up to 30 days from your stay, if the property was materially misrepresented in the listing, or if it has serious health or safety issues.

If you need help, click the "Contact Us" button at the bottom of Vrbo's "Book with Confidence Guarantee" page.

Vrbo prices are set by hosts — not Vrbo itself — so most tricks for saving money on hotels won't necessarily apply. Still, here are five ways to save money on Vrbo rentals:

manage your trip vrbo

Some properties offer weekly or monthly discounts for longer stays.

1. Book a longer stay

Some Vrbo hosts offer discounts if you stay for longer chunks of time. Hosts can opt to provide weekly or monthly discounts at a rate determined by them. If the property you want to rent offers a discount and your stay is long enough to satisfy the requirements, the discount is automatically applied at checkout.

Sure, a more extended stay will typically net out to be more expensive than a shorter stay, but if you can condense what would otherwise be multiple trips into one longer trip, you'll save money. Plus, that enables you to save beyond just the Vrbo, but other trip costs, like airfare.

2. Redeem credit card travel statement credits for Vrbo stays

A few credit cards offer travel statement credits covering various travel expenses and typically include Vrbo rentals, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve® .

3. Sign up for One Key Rewards

Before booking a stay through Vrbo, make sure to sign up for the One Key loyalty program. One Key rewards can be earned and redeemed across Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com. You can also earn elite status with One Key, which can help you save even more money and get perks on your bookings on all three sites.

You earn 2% OneKeyCash for every $1 you spend on your Vrbo bookings and each night that you stay counts as one segment towards earning status.

One drawback of the earn rate is that it's based on the room cost only and doesn’t include host fees, service fees or taxes, which can amount to a significant component of the total cost of the stay.

manage your trip vrbo

One example is this four night stay, which costs $1,121. However, you will only earn the 2% rewards on $573, amounting to only $11.46 in OneKeyCash.

Considering that host fees, service fees and taxes comprise a significant component of the trip cost, the $11.46 actually represents a measly 1.02% return on your investment. Though this is a pretty weak earn rate, not all bookings have equivalent fees, so the percentage you earn may be closer to 2%.

4. Earn points by paying with a travel rewards credit card

Sure, this tip won't save you money upfront, but it'll earn you travel rewards to cover future trips: Pay for your Vrbo with a travel rewards credit card .

If you've got a travel credit card that offers bonus points on travel spending, then Vrbos typically fall under the travel umbrella and qualify you for an elevated earn rate. Read your own credit card's terms, as some issuers define travel differently, or might only give you bonus points for travel booked directly through their travel portals (in which case a Vrbo wouldn't qualify).

Premium travel credit cards can be particularly rewarding towards your travel spending, with some offering returns of around three to five cents per dollar spent back in rewards. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® earns 3 points per $1 on all travel, and Vrbo falls into that category. If high annual fees aren't your jam, there are plenty of travel credit cards with no annual fee to pick from.

4. Earn United miles by connecting your accounts

Your Vrbo stays are an easy way to rack up United Airlines MileagePlus miles, which you can accumulate and redeem for free flights. You'll need to book through United's dedicated Vrbo webpage to qualify to earn points, and you'll also have to enter your MileagePlus membership number in the correct field.

When you do, you'll earn 3 MileagePlus award miles per $1 spent on the cost of the vacation rental after the completed stay, excluding taxes and fees.

So if you book a $1,000 stay, you will earn 3,000 miles. Since NerdWallet values United miles at 1.2 cents each, those 3,000 miles are worth $36. Although it's not a significant amount, connecting your accounts can be an easy way to accumulate some extra United miles with minimal effort.

5. Travel when no one wants to

Vrbo hosts can set different prices for different days — and they'll likely charge higher prices in line with demand. So, for example, a cabin near the ski lift base will probably cost more in winter, while the beachfront cottage will likely cost more in summer.

If you don't mind going to the beach on a cold winter day or riding the ski lift with no snow on the ground, then you might be rewarded financially. You can sometimes get the destination's best seasonal offerings coupled with lower prices by traveling during shoulder season .

The two vacation rental companies have a few key differences. Airbnb offers standalone homes, shared spaces and hotel rooms, while Vrbo only offers standalone accommodations.

Though Airbnb has more properties, Vrbo has more robust search capabilities. When we compared the cost of vacation rentals between Airbnb and Vrbo, we found that bookings were priced similarly.

Want to know more about how these two companies stack up against each other? Check out our comparison guide here: Airbnb vs. Vrbo: which is better for travelers?

If you’re looking to rent a vacation home for your upcoming trip, Vrbo offers plenty of properties around the world to choose from. Once you make an account, you’ll be able to search for properties and book them through the platform.

Since Vrbo properties are people’s homes, the cancellation policies as well as the check-in/checkout process will differ from place to place so keep that in mind as you plan for your trip.

When it comes to booking vacation rentals, Vrbo (Vacation Rentals By Owner) is a popular and trusted platform that connects travelers with a wide array of rental properties around the world. With Vrbo, you have the flexibility to choose from an extensive range of options, from cozy cabins to luxurious beachfront villas.

Step 1: Logging into your Vrbo account

The first step to checking your reservation on Vrbo is to log into your Vrbo account. If you don’t already have an account, you’ll need to create one using your email address or by connecting with your Facebook or Google account.

After successfully logging in, you will be redirected to your account dashboard, where you can manage your reservations, view upcoming trips, and make any necessary modifications.

It’s important to note that it’s always a good idea to use strong and unique passwords to protect your Vrbo account and personal information. Consider using a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters, and avoid using easily guessable passwords.

Step 2: Navigating to your reservations

After logging into your Vrbo account, the next step is to navigate to the reservations section, where you can access and review the details of your upcoming trips.

Follow these simple instructions to find your reservations:

  • On the top menu bar of the Vrbo website or mobile app, locate and click on the “My Trips” or “Reservations” tab. This will take you to a page dedicated to managing your reservations.
  • Here, you’ll find a list of your upcoming trips, including the check-in and check-out dates, the rental property name, and the location. You can also see the status of each reservation, whether it’s confirmed, pending, or cancelled.
  • If you have multiple reservations, you can use the search or filter options to quickly find the specific booking you’re interested in.
  • To access more detailed information about a specific reservation, simply click on the reservation details or the property name. This will open a new page with additional details, such as the property description, amenities, rules, and contact information for the host or owner.

By navigating to your reservations on Vrbo, you can easily keep track of your upcoming trips and stay organized throughout your vacation planning process.

Now that you’ve successfully located your reservations, let’s move on to the next step and review the details of your upcoming trips on Vrbo.

Step 3: Reviewing your upcoming reservations

Once you have navigated to the reservations section on Vrbo, it’s time to review the details of your upcoming trips. This step allows you to ensure that all the essential information, such as check-in dates, property location, and rental duration, is accurate and meets your expectations.

Follow these steps to review your upcoming reservations on Vrbo:

  • Locate your desired reservation in the list of upcoming trips. Click on the reservation details or the property name to access more information about the specific booking.
  • In the reservation details page, you will find important information about the rental property, such as the property description, amenities, photos, and policies.
  • Take the time to carefully review the check-in and check-out dates to ensure they align with your travel plans. Confirm that the property location is correct and matches your desired destination.
  • If you have any specific questions or concerns about the property, such as accessibility needs or pet policies, you can find contact information for the host or owner within the reservation details. Feel free to reach out to them directly to address any queries you may have.
  • Make note of any additional charges or fees associated with the reservation, such as cleaning fees or security deposits. This will help you plan and budget accordingly.

During the review process, it’s essential to pay attention to any cancellation or modification policies specific to your reservation. Familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions to ensure you understand the guidelines for making changes to your booking, if necessary.

By carefully reviewing the details of your upcoming reservations on Vrbo, you can confirm that everything is in order and make any needed arrangements or adjustments before your trip.

Now that you have reviewed the details of your upcoming trips, let’s explore the next step and learn how to check for modifications and contact the host or owner on Vrbo.

Step 4: Checking details and modifications

After reviewing the details of your upcoming reservations on Vrbo, it’s important to ensure that all the information is accurate and make any necessary modifications if needed. Vrbo provides a convenient platform for travelers to make changes to their bookings effortlessly.

  • From the reservation details page, carefully review all the information to ensure its accuracy. Check the rental property description, amenities, and any specific rules or policies.
  • If you need to modify any aspect of your booking, such as changing the dates, number of guests, or adding special requests, look for the “Modify Reservation” or “Edit Reservation” option. This button is often located near the reservation details or on the top of the page.
  • Clicking on the modify or edit button will take you to a new page where you can make the desired changes. Follow the prompts and instructions to enter the updated information, such as new check-in and check-out dates or any other modifications you wish to make.
  • Once you have made the necessary modifications, review the changes to ensure they align with your preferences and travel plans. Take note of any additional costs or adjustments in pricing that may arise from these modifications.
  • If you encounter any issues or have questions during the modification process, don’t hesitate to reach out to Vrbo customer support for assistance. They are available to help you through the process and address any concerns you may have.

Checking details and making modifications to your reservations on Vrbo is a straightforward process that allows you to tailor your booking to better suit your needs and preferences.

Now that you know how to make modifications if necessary, let’s move on to the next step and learn how to contact the host or owner through Vrbo.

Step 5: Contacting the host or owner

Communicating with the host or owner is an important aspect of your vacation rental experience. Whether you have questions about the property, need assistance with directions, or have special requests, Vrbo provides an easy way to contact the host or owner directly.

  • On the reservation details page, look for the contact information of the host or owner. This information is typically displayed in a section labeled “Host/Owner Contact” or “Contact Information.”
  • You will find the name of the host or owner, along with their phone number or email address. Use the information provided to get in touch with them.
  • Decide on the mode of communication that suits you best. You can choose to call the host or owner if a phone number is provided, or send an email if an email address is given.
  • When reaching out, be polite and concise in your message. Clearly state your questions or requests and provide any necessary context. If you require a prompt response, politely mention your timeframe for receiving a reply.
  • Keep in mind that hosts or owners may have different response times, so allow some time for them to get back to you. If you haven’t received a response within a reasonable period, you can consider contacting Vrbo customer support for assistance.

Remember, maintaining good communication with the host or owner can help ensure a seamless and enjoyable vacation experience. They are often the best resource for providing local insights, recommendations, and assistance during your stay.

Now that you know how to contact the host or owner on Vrbo, let’s move on to the next step and explore the process of cancelling or modifying your reservation if needed.

Step 6: Cancelling or modifying your reservation

Life can be unpredictable, and sometimes, you may need to cancel or modify your vacation plans. Vrbo understands that circumstances may change, and they provide options for cancelling or modifying your reservation.

  • Before making any changes, review the cancellation policy associated with your reservation. This information can usually be found in the reservation details or on the property listing page.
  • If you need to cancel your reservation, locate the “Cancel Reservation” or “Request Cancellation” option. This can typically be found on the reservation details page or in the booking confirmation email you received.
  • Click on the cancellation option and follow the prompts to initiate the cancellation process. Be aware that cancellation fees may apply depending on the cancellation policy and the timing of your cancellation.
  • If you wish to modify your reservation instead of cancelling it, refer back to the “Modify Reservation” or “Edit Reservation” option discussed earlier. This allows you to make changes to the dates, number of guests, or any other details related to your booking.
  • When modifying your reservation, be mindful of any additional costs that may arise due to changes in pricing or fees.
  • After submitting your cancellation or modification request, you should receive a confirmation email from Vrbo. Keep this for your records and reference in case any issues arise.
  • If you have any difficulties with the cancellation or modification process, don’t hesitate to reach out to Vrbo customer support for assistance.

It’s important to note that cancellation and modification policies may vary depending on the specific rental property and booking details. Be sure to review your reservation and its associated policies carefully before making any changes.

Now that you know how to cancel or modify your reservation on Vrbo, let’s move on to the final step and learn how to view your reservation history.

Step 7: Viewing reservation history

Once you’ve completed your trips and returned home, it can be useful to have a record of your past reservations for reference or to help plan future vacations. Vrbo makes it easy for you to access and view your reservation history, allowing you to keep track of your travel experiences.

  • From your Vrbo account dashboard, navigate to the “My Trips” or “Reservations” section. This is typically found on the top menu bar.
  • Look for a link or tab labeled “Reservation History” or “Past Reservations.” Click on it to access your history.
  • Once in the reservation history section, you’ll find a list of your past trips with details such as the property name, rental dates, and location.
  • You may also have the option to filter or sort your reservation history based on criteria such as the date of the trip or the destination.
  • By clicking on a specific past reservation, you can access additional details, such as the property description, amenities, and any reviews or ratings you may have left after your stay.

Having access to your reservation history can be helpful in many ways. It allows you to recall details from past trips, retrieve contact information of previous hosts or owners, and even provide feedback or recommendations based on your experiences.

With your reservation history readily available on Vrbo, you can easily plan future vacations, refer back to past experiences, and make informed decisions when it comes to booking your next rental property.

Congratulations! You have now learned how to check your reservation, navigate to your reservations, review the details, make modifications, contact the host or owner, and view your reservation history on Vrbo. Infographic detailing steps to find the perfect VRBO monthly stay - monthly stays vrbo infographic infographic-line-5-steps

In this concise journey through VRBO for monthly stays, we aim to demystify the process, providing straightforward answers and actionable tips to make your decision easier and your stay memorable. Whether you’re exploring the possibility for the first time or are a seasoned traveler seeking better options, let’s dive into long-term vacation rentals together.

Understanding VRBO’s Payment Options

When planning for monthly stays VRBO, understanding how you’ll be paying—and what you’re paying for—is crucial. Let’s break down the payment options and what they mean for you.

Affirm Filter : VRBO partners with Affirm to offer monthly payments. This means you can spread the cost of your stay over several months, making it easier to manage your budget. It’s like buying now and paying later, but for your vacation.

Monthly Payments : If you’re eyeing a longer stay, monthly payments can ease the financial burden. Instead of a hefty upfront cost, you can pay in smaller, more manageable amounts. This option is especially appealing for extended vacations or temporary housing solutions.

Owner Fees : Owners can choose how they want to be paid. Some opt for a pay-per-booking model, while others prefer an annual fee. Understanding the owner’s preference can help you negotiate better rates or choose properties that align with your budgeting style.

  • Pay-Per-Booking : This model is straightforward—you pay for each booking you make. It’s simple and flexible, making it ideal for travelers who don’t use VRBO frequently.
  • Annual Fee : Some owners pay VRBO an annual fee to list their properties. This can mean lower costs for you, as these owners might not need to recoup fees through high rental prices.

Vacation Rental Payment Options - monthly stays vrbo

When considering your next monthly stay on VRBO, think about how payment options affect your budget. Are you looking for the flexibility of monthly payments with Affirm? Do you prefer properties where owners pay an annual fee for potentially lower rental costs? Understanding these options can lead to significant savings and a more enjoyable vacation experience.

As we explore further ways to maximize your savings and find the perfect rental for your needs, knowledge is power. The more you know about your payment options, the better equipped you’ll be to make choices that suit your financial situation and travel goals.

Next, let’s dive into comparing costs between VRBO, hotels, and Airbnb to ensure you’re getting the best deal for your monthly stay.

Comparing Costs: VRBO vs. Hotels vs. Airbnb

When planning a longer stay, whether for work or leisure, getting the most value for your money is crucial. Let’s break down the costs associated with VRBO, hotels, and Airbnb, focusing on hotel affordability, lower fees, nightly rates, cleaning costs, and pet fees.

Hotel Affordability: Hotels can be convenient for short stays but often become costly for longer visits. They charge per night, and amenities like breakfast or parking can add up. For monthly stays, hotels might not be the most budget-friendly option.

Lower Fees on VRBO: VRBO listings usually have a set cleaning fee and sometimes a refundable security deposit. Unlike some hotels and Airbnb listings, VRBO often doesn’t charge extra for additional guests up to the accommodation’s maximum capacity. This can make VRBO a more economical choice for families or groups.

Nightly Rate Comparison: – VRBO offers competitive rates for longer stays since you’re renting directly from homeowners. Many listings provide weekly or monthly discounts. – Hotels often have a fixed rate, with discounts mainly available through loyalty programs or special promotions. – Airbnb also offers discounts for longer stays, but rates can vary widely depending on the host.

Cleaning Costs: Cleaning fees are standard across VRBO and Airbnb. These fees can make short stays seem disproportionately expensive but become less significant over a month-long stay. Hotels typically don’t charge a separate cleaning fee, but this cost is built into the nightly rate.

Pet Fees: – VRBO and Airbnb listings individually set pet policies and fees. You can find accommodations that allow pets for an additional fee or sometimes with no extra charge. – Hotels might offer pet-friendly rooms but usually at a premium rate.

In Summary: For monthly stays , VRBO often emerges as the more cost-effective option, providing more space and amenities for your money compared to hotels and sometimes Airbnb. The ability to split costs among several people, avoid per-person charges, and the potential for lower fees for pets and cleaning make VRBO an attractive choice for extended stays.

The best platform depends on your specific needs, preferences, and travel dates. Always compare the total cost of your stay, including all fees, to find the best deal.

Next, we’ll look into how you can find the best deal s on VRBO for even more savings on your next monthly stay.

Finding the Best Deals on VRBO

Finding the perfect deal for your next vacation can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. But with VRBO , snagging a fantastic monthly rental that ticks all your boxes – including being pet-friendly and close to your desired location – isn’t just possible; it’s pretty straightforward. Here’s how you can land the best deals for your monthly stays, whether you’re looking for a cozy spot by the beach or a city escape.

Read more about how to make your search on VRBO efficient and fruitful.

Monthly Rentals

First off, VRBO is a treasure trove for finding monthly rentals. The platform is designed to cater to longer stays, with many property owners offering significant discounts for extended bookings. When searching, use filters to specify the duration of your stay. This simple step can reveal listings that offer lower rates for month-long stays compared to the standard nightly or weekly prices.

Pet-friendly Options

For those of us who can’t imagine traveling without our furry friends, VRBO understands. Use the pet-friendly filter to quickly find accommodations that welcome pets. Some listings might charge an extra fee for pets, so it’s always a good idea to read the property’s policies or reach out to the owner for clarification.

Finding Rentals Near You

Whether you’re looking for a getaway close to home or planning a stay in an unfamiliar city, the “near me” filter on VRBO can help you find the best options in your desired area. This tool is especially handy for last-minute plans or when you’re looking to explore a specific neighborhood.

Cheap Vacation Rentals

Everyone loves a good deal, and VRBO is no exception when it comes to offering affordable vacation rentals. To find the most budget-friendly options, sort your search results by price or set a maximum budget limit. Don’t forget to check the amenities and read reviews to ensure the rental meets your expectations.

HomeAway and By Owner Options

VRBO’s sister site, HomeAway, offers a similar range of properties, so it’s worth checking both platforms to compare options. Additionally, looking for rentals “by owner” can sometimes lead to better deals. Direct negotiations with owners can offer more flexibility on rates, especially for longer stays.

Tips for Securing the Best Deals

  • Book Early : Especially for peak seasons, booking your stay months in advance can secure you a better rate.
  • Consider Off-Season Travel : Rates can be significantly lower during the off-season, and you’ll often enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • Reach Out to Hosts : Don’t hesitate to contact property owners directly through VRBO’s messaging system. Some may offer additional discounts for long-term stays that aren’t advertised.
  • Watch for Special Offers : Keep an eye on VRBO for last-minute deals or special promotions that can lead to significant savings.

By using these strategies, you can find amazing deals on VRBO for your next monthly stay. Whether you’re searching for a pet-friendly rental, a budget-friendly option, or a property in a specific location, VRBO has the tools and selection to help you find the perfect match. The key to securing the best deal is a combination of early planning, flexibility, and direct communication with hosts .

Let’s explore some tips for negotiating even better rates for longer stays, ensuring your vacation is not only memorable but also kind to your wallet.

Tips for Securing Cheaper Rates for Longer Stays

Finding a great deal for monthly stays on VRBO isn’t just about luck; it’s about strategy. Whether you’re planning an extended vacation or need a temporary home, saving money is always a win. Here are practical tips to help you secure cheaper rates for longer stays.

Negotiation Is Key

Don’t shy away from negotiating with hosts. Many are open to discussing rates, especially for extended stays. Here’s a simple approach:

  • Reach out: Send a polite message expressing your interest in the property and your stay duration.
  • Mention flexibility: If you can be flexible with your dates, let them know. It might work in your favor.
  • Ask for a deal: Politely inquire if they can offer a special rate for a longer stay.

Read more about how to negotiate with hosts on VRBO.

Understand the Power of Extended Stays

Longer stays often equate to lower nightly rates. Here’s why:

  • Less turnover for hosts: It means less cleaning and preparation, making your stay more appealing.
  • Guaranteed income: Hosts appreciate the security of a booked calendar.

Weekly and Monthly Discounts

Many listings on VRBO offer automatic discounts for weekly or monthly stays. Look for these deals as they can significantly reduce your overall cost.

Use Filters Wisely

VRBO’s search filters are powerful tools. Use them to find properties that specifically offer discounts for longer stays. This can quickly narrow down your options to those most financially advantageous for you.

Flexibility Wins

Being flexible with your travel dates can unlock better rates. Some periods are less busy for hosts, making them more inclined to offer discounts to ensure their property doesn’t sit empty.

Direct Communication

Once you’ve found a potential match, direct communication with the host can make a difference. Share a bit about yourself and why you’re staying. Building a rapport can lead to better rates and a more personalized experience.

By following these tips—negotiating, taking advantage of extended stay discounts, using filters effectively, being flexible, and communicating directly with hosts—you’re well on your way to securing a fantastic deal for your next long-term vacation rental on VRBO .

We’ll delve into alternatives to VRBO for monthly stays, ensuring you have all the information you need to make the best decision for your needs and budget.

Alternatives to VRBO for Monthly Stays

Finding the perfect monthly stay for your long-term vacation or work trip isn’t limited to just VRBO. There are several other platforms and options that can cater to your needs, often with unique benefits. Let’s explore some of these alternatives:

Airbnb : Known for its vast selection of listings, Airbnb is not just for short-term stays. It offers filters that allow you to search specifically for long-term options, including month-to-month rentals and furnished homes. The platform provides a wide range of accommodations, from private rooms to entire apartments, catering to different preferences and budgets.

Month-to-Month Rentals : These are ideal if you’re not sure how long you’ll need to stay. Many landlords and property management companies offer flexible leasing terms that don’t lock you into a long-term contract. This flexibility can be a huge advantage if your plans are up in the air.

Short-Term Rentals : Similar to month-to-month options, short-term rentals offer flexibility but are specifically designed for stays shorter than a traditional lease. These can range from a couple of weeks to a few months and are often furnished, making them a convenient choice.

Furnished Homes and Apartments : For those who prefer not to worry about the logistics of moving furniture for a temporary stay, furnished homes and apartments are a great solution. These properties come ready to live in, with all the essentials, from furniture to kitchenware. Websites like Homestay and SabbaticalHomes cater specifically to this need, offering a more “home-like” feel for your extended stay.

Local Real Estate Agencies : Sometimes, the best deals aren’t found online but through local connections. In many destinations, real estate agencies or property management companies have listings for long-term vacation rentals that might not be advertised on larger platforms. A quick search or phone call could uncover hidden gems.

Extended-Stay Hotels : Don’t overlook the convenience of extended-stay hotels. Brands like Residence Inn and Extended Stay America offer the amenities of a hotel with the comfort and space of an apartment, including kitchen facilities. This can be a hassle-free option, with the bonus of housekeeping services.

Direct Booking with Owners : Lastly, consider reaching out directly to property owners. Platforms like Craigslist or local classified ads may have listings for longer-term stays that can offer more negotiable terms and rates.

Each of these alternatives to VRBO for monthly stays has its own set of advantages, from flexibility and cost to the type of accommodation available. Whether you’re looking for a cozy apartment, a furnished home, or a flexible month-to-month rental, exploring these options can help you find the perfect place to call home for a while. The key to a successful long-term rental experience is clear communication with your host or landlord, understanding the terms of your stay, and choosing the right platform that meets your specific needs.

Can I make monthly payments on Vrbo?

Yes, you can make monthly payments on VRBO for some properties. However, this option depends on the agreement you reach with the property owner. Some hosts may allow you to pay your stay in installments, especially for longer rentals. It’s crucial to communicate directly with the host to understand their payment policies.

Does Vrbo charge a monthly fee?

No, VRBO does not charge guests a monthly fee. The cost you incur is the rental fee set by the property owner, along with any other fees they might include, such as cleaning or service fees. VRBO makes money by charging the host a fee for listing their property, not from monthly subscriptions from guests.

Is Vrbo more expensive than Airbnb?

The answer to whether VRBO is more expensive than Airbnb can vary based on several factors, including location, property type, and the length of stay. Generally, both platforms offer a range of prices, from budget-friendly to luxury options. For monthly stays, VRBO might present a better deal in some cases, especially for larger properties or vacation homes, as it traditionally focuses on whole-house rentals. However, it’s always wise to compare prices on both platforms for your specific destination and travel dates.

When searching for monthly stays VRBO can offer a wide variety of options. Whether you’re considering a month-long vacation, a work-related stay, or any other extended visit, weigh the pros and cons of each platform and property. Always communicate clearly with hosts about your needs and expectations, and don’t hesitate to negotiate terms or ask for discounts for longer stays. With a bit of research and flexibility, you can find the perfect home away from home.

rental, exploring these options can help you find the perfect place to call home for a while. The key to a successful long-term rental experience is clear communication with your host or landlord, understanding the terms of your stay, and choosing the right platform that meets your specific needs.

Travel Shops open for business; new e-commerce product debuts as first shoppable storefront for content creators

Travel industry’s leading advertising platform is announced with groundbreaking capabilities

Traveling just got a whole lot easier. Expedia Group announced today at EXPLORE™, our annual partner conference in Las Vegas, the travel industry’s most innovative and comprehensive release of 40+ new products and features — making picking a hotel that won’t offend your hotel-obsessed companion or your budget a seamless experience.

“At Expedia Group, we embrace the transformative power of AI to create personalized travel experiences. Our long-standing investments in this space enable us to capitalize on the breathtaking pace of AI innovation, and today’s Spring Release demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative products and features that enhance the way people explore the world,” said Ariane Gorin, CEO, Expedia Group.

ROMIE – YOUR ‘ROAMING’ AI BUDDY

Let’s face it, we’d all love to have someone help us work out all the details of our trip based on our preferences. Travelers now have that option with Romie™, the travel industry’s first AI assistant designed to ‘roam’ the world with you and have your back at every step of your trip.

Romie assists with planning, shopping, booking and even lends a hand when something unexpectedly changes during a trip — serving as your travel agent, concierge and personal assistant, all in one. Like the ideal travel companion, Romie gets progressively intelligent — learning who you are, remembering what type of trips you like, and even if you prefer Italian food and boutique hotels or an afternoon hiking through nature. The alpha version of the Romie experience is currently available on EG Labs™, a hub for experimental products:

  • Group Chat Trip Planning : Invite Romie to join your SMS group chat and listen to your vacation plans. If you want some advice, just @Romie to get suggestions on where to go or what to do, like you would a travel agent.
  • Smart Search : Ask Romie to summarize your group chat and bring what they learned about your trip straight into your Expedia shopping experience. Personalize your search even more by adding your own filters like rooftop views and early check-in to find your ideal hotel faster.
  • Building Your Itinerary : Like any good concierge, your new AI buddy is eager to help you build your perfect trip. Romie can pull in travel information from your emails and suggest restaurants and activities near your hotel that they think you and your group will enjoy.
  • Dynamic Service : You can rely on Romie to troubleshoot with you when things don’t go as planned. Like the perfect personal assistant, Romie monitors weather changes or last-minute disruptions that may impact your plans and has alternative suggestions ready that are convenient for you.
  • Intelligent Assistance : Throughout your trip, Romie updates your itinerary in real time so anyone in the group chat with FOMO can see what you’re up to, and anyone that needs to pick you up from the airport can simply @Romie to check what time you land.

“We believe in re-imagining the traveler experience, and then using the latest in AI to bring it to life, and with Romie, we’ve done just that , ” said Rathi Murthy, CTO, Expedia Group. “We created an AI assistant with hyper personalization in mind so that travelers can choose when they want Romie’s help on their own terms. Expedia Summer Outlook Released: Reveals How to Save $265 on Summer Airfare

This type of vacation rental cancellation is on the rise. Are you next?

A few days before flying to Bali, Indonesia, I received an unexpected email from Airbnb: My host had sold my vacation home.

"We’re reaching out with the unfortunate news that your reservation was canceled," it said. "Your refund is on its way."

But wait – I didn't want my money back. I needed a place to stay while I was in Indonesia. Airbnb assured me I had nothing to worry about. It would find a new rental and cover my extra expenses. But, as always, some restrictions applied.

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

Sales cancellations are on the rise

Selling a vacation rental out from under a guest is becoming a big problem, insiders said. There are no statistics on the number of vacation rentals with active reservations that are for sale. But Justin Gordon, who runs the rental price comparison site HiChee , says more hosts are putting their rentals on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo while they wait to sell their properties. He has seen the disruption it causes guests who are about to leave for vacation.

"I felt so sorry for the guests," he said.

Did I mention the Indonesia rental? That wasn't my first cancellation. I rented a condo in Oahu, Hawaii, a few years ago through Vrbo. A week before I checked in, I got an email saying my stay had been canceled because the property was sold.

"Many homeowners are investors, buying properties low and selling high or holding them for a set number of years as a part of their financial strategy," said Matthew Deal, managing director of Element Vacation Homes , a central Florida vacation rental company.

A cancellation can have consequences for the seller. For example, if you list your home on Vrbo, you might have to pay the platform a cancellation fee, which gets higher as your arrival day approaches.

"In addition to financial penalties, repeat offenders may see limited search visibility on the Vrbo app and site, temporary suspension, or revocation of their Premier Host status," said spokesperson Nola Lu.

Airbnb has similar restrictions. "We expect Hosts to honor accepted reservations," said spokesperson Aaron Swor.

What are your rights when your vacation rental is sold?

If your vacation rental is sold before you arrive, you have some rights – though not as many as you'd assume.

  • For rentals booked directly through the owner, your rental contract will outline your right to a refund. If you're dealing with a host who has only one rental or can't accommodate you at a different property, you'll get a full refund, but you'll have to start over and find a new vacation rental. Pro tip: Use a credit card to book. If the owner flakes out and tries to keep your money, you can always dispute the charges.
  • For rentals booked through a popular vacation rental platform like Airbnb or Vrbo, the platform will offer a full refund or or accommodate you at a different rental property. If there's a price difference – and there usually is – then the platform may offer to cover the extra cost.
  • If you booked through a property management company, your rights may not be spelled out in your contract, but chances are the company will have a plan "B" ready. For example, Element Vacation Rentals has a policy to promptly present multiple options to displaced guests, including comparable properties from its portfolio and those of its competitors. Ask about the policy before you make a reservation.

At least, that is what's supposed to happen if there's a cancellation. But let's talk about what actually does happen.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

Flying cars are coming! Here's how they could change the way you travel.

What if an owner sells a vacation rental?

When an owner sells your vacation rental from under you, you'll probably feel confused and upset. And even as you're processing the loss of your rental, your host may ask you for a favor.

When the owners of Gerri Detweiler's Airbnb rental sold their place, her host asked her to cancel the rental. The reason? The host didn't want to incur a fee from Airbnb. So Detweiler, a personal finance expert from Sarasota, Florida, canceled the stay.

"I didn't bother booking another rental with Airbnb," she said.

For both of my cancellations, I had no choice. I was only days away from checking in.

To their credit, both Airbnb and Vrbo helped me. Vrbo found a new rental in Hawaii and covered the price difference. Airbnb offered a coupon and sent me a few options for a replacement rental in Bali. The only one available on such short notice was thousands of dollars more than my original rental, so Airbnb increased the amount of the coupon to cover the extra cost.

The difference between the platforms was in their approach to the situation. Vrbo transferred me to a special team that took care of everything quickly. With Airbnb, it felt like more of a negotiation. But in the end, I was grateful to have the protection of both vacation rental platforms.

'Flying feels different': Here's how air travel has changed recently

Air travel smells worse than ever. Here's how to fix it.

This could happen to you

This isn't an abstract issue. Two of this year's hottest housing markets – Orlando and Tampa, Florida – are popular with vacation renters and are likely to have lots of homes that are also on the market.

But that's not the real problem. It's that most vacation rental customers don't know their rights when they rent. They either assume that they have no choice but to take the refund and that they're on their own. Or they believe the vacation rental company must find them a comparable rental and cover any price difference.

But you're not on your own unless you rented directly through an individual – and even then, the previous owner may be able to refer you to another rental. And your vacation rental platform won't automatically find you a new place and pay for it. You may have to negotiate.

The best solution is disclosure. Vacation rental owners should tell you if their property is for sale. Then you can make an informed decision about whether you still want to rent the place – and take your chances.

Elliott's tips for avoiding a vacation rental cancellation

Getting surprised by a vacation rental sale is preventable. Here are a few strategies:

  • Talk to the owner : Before you rent a vacation home, ask if the place is for sale. If it is, ask what would happen if the unit were to be sold. If it's sold, talk to the new owners," said hospitality consultant Steve Turk. "See if they'll honor your reservation."
  • Read the reviews – all of them : If you're renting on a popular platform, don't just skim the reviews. Read them. Sometimes, hosts will stop caring about their rental unit if they know they're going to sell. "Check to see if recent guests have posted any negative reviews," advised Pete Evering, a business development manager at Utopia Property Management , a rental management company.
  • Do your research : If you have the address of the rental, run a quick online search. If it shows up on Zillow or Realtor.com , you know you have a problem. Gordon from HiChee is considering developing technology that would notify travelers in case their booked rental shows up for sale on the internet.

Faye Travel Insurance Review 2024

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

At its core, Faye Travel Insurance is the first fin-tech startup providing a modern take on travel insurance. Our Faye travel insurance review finds the company prides itself on offering a fully digital experience. This digital push means its consumers can buy a policy, submit claims, and receive payouts seamlessly through a mobile app.

Faye puts your travel insurance options in the palm of your hand. However, everyone's travel insurance needs differ. Online access is only one of the things travelers look for. So it's essential to read the fine print before you pay for the best travel insurance for your needs. Here's a closer look at what you need to know before buying a Faye travel insurance plan.

Faye is a fairly new competitor in the travel insurance industry, operating since 2019. It offers one base travel insurance policy with quite a few additional coverage options, such as pet care expenses, vacation rental damage protection, and adventure sports protection. You'll manage your policy, file claims, and communicate with customer service and travel assistance through Faye's mobile app.

Faye's "whole trip" travel insurance policy covers all the fundamentals with fairly high coverage limits. That said, its premiums are on the high side. It has particularly high rates for younger travelers relative to its competitors, which is a shame, since its tech-focused approach to travel insurance seems geared towards younger travelers.

Types of Policies Offered by Faye Travel Insurance

Faye starts with one base plan, boasting that it provides "whole trip" travel insurance to protect "your trip, your health, and your stuff." It also offers riders to customize your coverage for a fee.

Here's what's included in the base plan:

Additional coverage options from Faye

In addition to the base plan, Faye offers a robust selection of riders or supplemental policies buyers can add to the plan for an additional cost. The riders are the same in the U.S. and abroad.

These include:

  • Adventure and extreme sports protection: up to $250,000 (international trips) or $50,000 (domestic trips) for accident and sickness expenses. Users should read the policy to ensure their plans qualify.
  • Vacation rental damage protection: applicable for short-term rentals like Airbnb and VRBO or other rentals. Faye will reimburse you up to $3,000
  • Cancel for Any Reason: up to 75% of the nonrefundable insured trip cost when purchased within 14 days of initial trip deposit
  • Pet Plan Bundle: up to $2,500 for vet expenses and $250 for kenneling if your trip is extended unexpectedly
  • Rental car care (for cars renting within the U.S. and Canada only): up to $50K in coverage for accidental damage by collision, vandalism, natural disaster or theft related to your rental car

Always check your other insurance policies if you're looking for specific coverage types not included in this list. You might be surprised at the coverage automatically available to you. For example, U.S. auto insurance will extend to rental cars in the U.S. You can talk to your auto insurance company about any international travel.

Additionally, some credit cards offer travel protections , which are generally along the lines of basic travel cancellation insurance. If you have a travel credit card, it may be worth double-checking the protections that credit card provides. You can find our guide on the best travel credit cards here.

Faye Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The  average cost of travel insurance  is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for  plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate Faye travel insurance coverage costs.

  • 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 trip to Italy: $162.18
  • 30-year-old from California on a two-week vacation to Japan for $4,000 trip: $173.17
  • Texas family consisting of two 40-year-old parents with a 10-year-old and 4-year-old on a two-week trip to Australia for $20,000: $919.70
  • 65-year-old New Jersey couple traveling to for Mexico for two weeks for $6,000: $436.52

With these estimates, Faye isn't the cheapest travel insurance policy . However, these costs are roughly in line with what you should expect to pay for an average travel insurance policy.

How to Purchase and Manage a Faye Policy

To purchase a Faye policy, you'll need to give them the following details about your trip:

  • Destination
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers, their birthdays, and email addresses
  • State of residence

Once you get your quote, you can input your trip cost as well as purchase any riders you qualify for.

How to File a Claim with Faye

The easiest way to submit a claim with Faye is through its mobile app. The app has a 24/7 chat feature to ensure you get the assistance you need as quickly as possible.

You can also contact Faye via phone or email. Domestic travelers should call +1-833-240-7056, while international travelers should dial +1-804-482-2122. If you wish to contact the company via email, [email protected] is the best address.

Notably, one thing that sets Faye's claims process apart from other travel insurance providers is that any payouts you receive will be deposited directly into your Faye Wallet. The Faye Wallet works similarly to an Apple Pay account, allowing Faye's team to process claims faster. You can immediately access the money to pay for things like dog kenneling, replacing everyday toiletries and clothes, and more.

Customer reviews report that a claim might take a while to process on their own but calling Faye's customer support line can expedite the claims process.

Although Faye is relatively new in the travel insurance industry, it's built an excellent reputation among its customers. It has an average rating of 4.7 stars out of five on its Trustpilot page. Reviewers spoke highly of the buying process and customer service team. The claims process received mixed reviews, with some extended wait times, but reviews on the claims process were still positive overall.

Faye's mobile apps on Android and iOS play a significant role in your coverage, allowing you to manage your policy, file claims, and communicate with Faye's customer service team. Faye's Android app received 4.0 stars on the Google Play store, and its iOS app received 4.2 stars.

In addition to positive reviews, it's also worth mentioning that Faye regularly responds to reviews on Trustpilot as well as its mobile app. That said, contacting customer service directly is still the most reliable way to get assistance, as review response times from Faye range from same-day to two-weeks from when the review was made.

Learn more about how Faye Travel Insurance compares to some of the best travel insurance companies.

Faye vs. AIG Travel Insurance

While both Faye  and AIG offer apps for travel insurance customers, AIG's app is currently only available to those with corporate bookings. In short, vacationers lack access to the app. Faye, on the other hand, has apps for both IOS and Android users.

Faye may be the way to go if you're more comfortable navigating the insurance process on your phone or don't plan to take a computer. Still, AIG may provide more options if you want more control over your claim limits.

AIG offers three levels of comprehensive travel insurance with varying limits. The company also has annual travel insurance plans, which may be a good fit if you plan to go on multiple trips this year. Overall, premiums are similar between the two companies.

Read our AIG Travel Insurance review here.

Faye vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

One of Faye's main benefits is that it offers a large selection of add-on options that allow you to tailor your coverage to fit your needs. These include riders like a pet policy or an adventure sports rider.

At this time, Allianz only offers supplemental rental car insurance policies in addition to its comprehensive insurance plans.

However, Allianz may present a more straightforward and comprehensive option if you're not in the market for hyper-specialized coverage. Both companies include emergency medical transportation and costs in base plans. Overall, Allianz is typically the more affordable option between the two.

Read our Allianz Travel Insurance review here.

Faye vs. World Nomads Travel Insurance

On the whole, Faye and World Nomads travel insurance are relatively similar. Both offer comprehensive insurance plans, coverage for extreme sports, and 24/7 claims assistance. However, it's the finer details that set the two companies apart.

For its part, Faye's most significant selling point is its mobile app and quick transfer of funds to its card. It also has the option to add on those tailored additional coverage riders, such as its pet plan bundle, cancel for any reason coverage, and vacation rental damage protection.

In contrast, World Nomads has two comprehensive plans, which means you can select your claim limits. Plus, the company allows you to extend your coverage if you stay away from home longer than you'd planned.

World Nomads premiums may also be more competitive depending on where you're going.

Read our World Nomads Travel Insurance review here.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed Faye Travel Insurance

While reviewing Faye, we compared its offerings to other reputable travel insurance providers. Specifically, we compared the available plan options, add-ons, claim limits, coverages, exclusions, and typical policy costs.

New York Today

How a $10 fee on your car insurance bill is actually spent.

The fee collected by New York State is supposed to go toward fighting car thefts and fraud. But an audit found that the program was poorly run.

James Barron

By James Barron

Good morning. It’s Tuesday. Today we’ll find out about a $10 annual fee that’s added in every car insurance policy in New York State. We’ll also see what former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the city’s public advocate, Jumaane Williams, said when they criticized Mayor Eric Adams.

A gridlocked Manhattan street at dusk.

In New York, there’s an automatic add-on that makes car insurance more expensive: a $10 annual fee collected by New York State. For most drivers, it goes unnoticed.

It is supposed to cover an effort to fight car thefts and automobile insurance fraud. But a recent audit by the state comptroller’s office found that the program had been poorly administered.

The audit comes against a backdrop of soaring premiums , which are often cited as one element of the broader economy that has kept inflation from cooling down. The price of motor vehicle insurance rose by more than 22 percent in the 12 months ending in April, the fastest since the 1970s, according to a report that the Bureau of Labor Statistics issued last week.

That followed estimates by the comparison-shopping website Insurify, which calculated in January that auto insurance premiums in New York State were 67 percent higher than the national average in 2023.

Insurify also found that New York drivers spent, on average, 4.3 percent of their income on car insurance, the same as drivers in Florida and the most of any state except Louisiana, where 4.7 percent of motorists’ income goes for car insurance.

Just over 32,700 cars were stolen in New York State last year, 15 percent more than in 2022, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, an industry group that tracks insurance claims.

In New York City, car thefts rose as the coronavirus pandemic receded, even as the rates of other major crimes declined. Just under 16,800 cars were stolen in the city last year, up 12 percent from the year before, according to the insurance crime bureau.

Data from the Police Department shows that car thefts are down 11 percent this year, through May 12 , compared with the same period last year. In September, the department announced a citywide program to combat car theft, designating one patrol car in each precinct to trace stolen vehicles. Officials blamed TikTok videos showing how to steal Kias and Hyundais for the increase in car thefts last summer.

But the $10 fee for the theft and fraud prevention program did not go to the insurance companies. It went to a state agency, the Division of Criminal Justice Services, which was assigned to award grants to county-level law enforcement agencies.

The audit, which covered the years from 2018 to 2021, found gaps in “program governance” that affected the criminal justice agency’s “ability to conduct program business.” Some $13.9 million was paid out in grants during those years, but $7.9 million was returned, unspent, to the state’s general fund.

The audit said that a 12-person board responsible for overseeing the program had met only three times in 2019, not four, as required — and not at all in 2020 and 2021. As a result, the audit said, the agency paid out the same amounts each year based on outdated crime data.

The Queens district attorney’s office received the same $560,625 each year, even when car theft and fraud claims climbed 43 percent in 2019-20, according to the audit. The Bronx district attorney’s office received $329,991 a year. Car thefts in the Bronx rose 41.3 percent from the year before.

Similarly, the grant totals remained unchanged in 2020-21, when claims rose another 7.8 percent in Queens and 8.3 percent in the Bronx — but were up almost 59 percent on Staten Island, which had an increase of only 6.3 percent in 2019-20.

Melinda Katz, the Queens district attorney, said by email that the auto crimes unit in her office investigated and prosecuted car thefts, “including those perpetrated by organized rings” that resell vehicles for parts or scrap. She said that the state program funded the work of prosecutors who handle auto theft cases, and paid for equipment used in investigations and training for assistant district attorneys.

In the Bronx, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office said that detectives and prosecutors had worked with police precincts with the most car thefts. She said detectives and prosecutors had also targeted thefts of catalytic converters and tires. In 2023, she said, 264 stolen cars worth $7 million were recovered.

The criminal justice agency said it had no comment beyond a response included with the audit, which said that it could begin using more current data if a quorum was present when meetings of the 12-person board resumed.

Expect sunny skies with temperatures peaking in the upper 80s. In the evening, temperatures will drop to the mid-60s.

ALTERNATE-SIDE PARKING

In effect until May 27 (Memorial Day).

The latest New York news

The governor visits her ancestral home : After meeting the pope and the mayors of Rome, London and Dublin, Gov. Kathy Hochul paused to reconnect with her past.

Critics fault the police response to a rally : Violent confrontations at a pro-Palestinian rally in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, reflected what some local officials and protest organizers called an unexpectedly aggressive response by the Police Department.

The “Not on Our Dime” act : Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez publicly backed a bill that could strip New York nonprofits of their tax-exempt status if their funds were used to support Israel’s military and settlement activity.

The Trump Trial

The prosecution’s final witness : The prosecution rested its case on Monday after Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s onetime fixer and the key witness in the case against the former president, testified for a fourth and final day. Cohen again fended off attacks from Trump’s lawyers .

Closing arguments : Justice Juan Merchan said that the case would take longer than expected to wrap up. Closing arguments are now scheduled for next week.

Trump’s allies : Supporters who joined Trump in court included the former leader of an outlaw motorcycle gang in New York City who spent years in prison on drug charges.

Criticizing the mayor’s management

With Mayor Eric Adams facing a federal investigation into campaign fund-raising and struggling with low approval ratings, prominent Democrats have increasingly taken aim at him and his policies. Over the weekend, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Jumaane Williams, the city’s public advocate, weighed in .

Cuomo, who spoke at the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights in Brooklyn, criticized the city for its “incompetence” in managing the Jacob Riis public housing complex in Lower Manhattan, where there have been concerns about arsenic poisoning . But Cuomo, who has been friendly in the past with Adams, a fellow Democrat, did not mention the mayor by name.

Williams called the mayor’s response to the Israel-Hamas war “shameful and dangerous” and argued that the police had used too much force against protesters at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

Cuomo and Williams have not said whether they intend to run for mayor next year. My colleague Emma G. Fitzsimmons says their candidacies seem more likely if an indictment against Adams is handed up. Two Democrats who have announced forming exploratory campaigns for mayor — Zellnor Myrie, a state senator, and Scott Stringer, a former city comptroller — have also been critical of Adams’s stewardship of the city.

Adams, his allies and his aides have been quick to push back. A spokeswoman for the New York City Housing Authority, which runs the Jacob Riis complex, attacked Cuomo on social media , and the mayor’s former chief of staff, Frank Carone, responded to Williams : “What is shocking is your latent bias against Israel and incapability to call out antisemitism.”

METROPOLITAN diary

A sister’s gift

Dear Diary:

It sat silent and broken in my jewelry box for 40 years: a stunning Swiss watch that my sister had bought for me on a high school trip to Italy 55 years ago.

I looked at it often with fondness but had never taken time out of my busy life to get it fixed.

One day, a colleague asked me to accompany her on a trip to have her watch repaired. Before heading out, I decided to retrieve mine.

After making our way to an old basement repair shop in Borough Park, Brooklyn, we handed our watches to the older man there, and he disappeared into the back.

He returned after a brief time and handed my watch back to me.

Heartbroken, I figured it was beyond repair. Then the man smiled at me.

“My dear,” he said, “all you had to do was wind it.”
