Loafers are having a moment. No longer just a prepster staple, these laceless slip-ons have become a ubiquitous shoe choice regardless of someone’s chosen aesthetic. And why not? There’s something decidedly timeless about a loafer’s easy-to-wear silhouette, but as more brands (from the big-name designers to cool-kid start-ups) fashion loafers in a variety of styles, there’s quite literally a loafer for everyone. You can even wear them—lined with shearling or done in flannel—during the winter.

I’ve been wearing loafers since my grade-school years. They were part of my Catholic school uniform. And 30 years later, as an adult who travels for a living, I don’t think there’s a style of shoe I love more. I own quite a few pairs of loafers, largely because their classic shape goes with most activities and outfits. You want to wear them to a summer wedding in Capri ? Great. How about with shorts and a linen button-down while exploring the pyramids in Egypt ? Cute. Want to run around on a cruise with jeans and a t-shirt? Just slip your loafers on and head to the buffet! I’ve literally done all of the above with loafers on. And don’t even get me started about how easy loafers make getting through airport security.

Not convinced yet? Here are 15 of the best men's loafers that’ll make a believer out of you.

We love how fall-ready Madewell’s collaboration with Bass is. These Weejuns come with fun details like the lug sole which will give them more grip for daily wear. And this deep green suede is such an unusual choice for a shoe, but it’ll be great with autumnal hues like brown, tan, and orange. They can also transition beautifully into the holidays if you’d like a festive pair of footwear to go with all your party attire.  Sizes available: 7-13 (including half sizes)

Features : Suede upper, lug outsole

men's travel loafers

The chic combination of colors on these loafers screams Ivy Leaguer in the best possible way. Lean into the aesthetic by pairing them with jeans and a navy blazer for date night or with a pair of chino shorts and a button-down oxford for a warm day taking in a new city. And if you really want to have fun with it, keep checking back for limited-edition releases, like this outfit-brightening version in the color vintage blue .

Sizes available: 7-13 (including half sizes)

Features: Leather upper, rubber panel on the leather outsole

men's travel loafers

Sometimes you just want a pair of classic loafers that’ll go with everything you own for just about any occasion. These leather moc-toe loafers are it. Crafted out of thick cow leather with a pillowy-soft interior, these slip-ons are meant to mold to the contours of your feet as you wear them (so you’ll want to wear them a lot.). There aren’t a ton of visible bells and whistles, and that’s why we love them.  Sizes available : 7-14

Features : Leather upper, leather outsole, memory foam insole

men's travel loafers

If you’re not familiar with this Copenhagen-based footwear brand, now is a great time to get acquainted. It's known for taking classic silhouettes and adding unexpected details to create a more special shoe. Take these loafers: They’re a classic suede penny-style loaded on top of a voluptuous crepe outsole for added comfort and to give the shoe a bit of extra bulk. They look cool, minimalistic, and will complement your day-to-day wardrobe seamlessly. But if you want to take it to the next level, opt for the baby pink colorway . Sizes available : 6-13

Features : Suede upper, crepe outsole

men's travel loafers

The classic good-looks of these leather loafers (adorned only with a wrap-around tassel) give them a wear-everywhere appeal, but they’re especially great for when you need to dress up. Yes, they’re naturally great for work. But they’re handsome enough to complement your outfit at more formal events, while being simple enough to wear to more easy-going functions. In short, these loafers might be the footwear workhorse of your next destination wedding, where you can slip these on for the rehearsal dinner, the ceremony, and the reception (and everything in between). You can change up your clothes, but you only need the same pair of shoes.

Sizes available : 6-14 (including half and wide sizes)

Features : Leather upper, leather lining, leather outsoles

men's travel loafers

I wore these for nearly a year when I was stuck in Denver for 10 months, and I must say that the combination of super soft water-repellent suede and a memory foam footbed makes for very comfortable loafers. The silhouette (which is slightly narrower) is versatile, too. You can dress them up for dinner, or slip them on to walk the dog. The heel counter—the back part of the shoe that covers your heels—folds down, too, so you can also wear these as a mule. The best part: They will barely take up any space in your weekender. And the version in the color Coast ? An instant summer-vacation classic! Sizes available : 6-15 (including half sizes)

Features : Water-repellent suede upper, memory foam footbed, foldable heel counter

men's travel loafers

The upper silhouette of these shoes is your classic Venetian, and that comes in several colors and materials. There’s black leather, taupe suede, and there’s the blue suede that looks perfect for yachting. (Amber Jack uses water-repellent suede, by the way.) But what sets the brand apart is the proprietary tech that goes into the soles of the shoes. This includes a durable memory foam insole and a TPU outsole similar to what you’d find in more athletic shoes. And the back part of the sole is actually made of hiking boot material for added support. These are the kind of loafers you could pound the pavement in, for all-day sightseeing and the late-night stroll to walk dinner off.

Sizes available : 6-15 (including half sizes)

Features : Leather upper, sheepskin lining, heat-activated insole

men's travel loafers

Scandinavian lifestyle brand Swims turns the classic loafer on its head with this water-friendly iteration—the perfect shoe for your next trip to the tropics. A breathable textile over a cushy insole and a grippy rubber outsole make this a comfortable pair to slip into for a week spent island hopping around the Caribbean . Details like the braided tie-up top and the woven toe box lend it some stylish flair if you want to rock ‘em for a cool beachside dinner. Swims offers them in countless colors, too, from classic navy to a head-turning Bordeaux.

Features : Rubber outsole, machine washable, moisture wicking

men's travel loafers

A classic pair of leather loafers with horsebit detailing never goes out of style. This pocket-friendly pair from Steve Madden is a great entry-level choice if you’re looking to try out loafers. We love how the gold-tone hardware complements the rich tan leather for a vintage feel that will go with just about any outfit.

Sizes available : 7-13 (including half sizes)

Features : Leather upper, rubber outsole, gold-tone hardware, removable cushion insole with arch support

men's travel loafers

You can definitely find loafers that are less expensive than these, but Bass has been making them for nearly 100 years. This in mind, you’d be hard-pressed to find better value in the category. They capture the preppy essence of the penny loafer with the classic Larson style, but they’re not afraid to roll out more playful versions, too: like colorblock , bright  cherry red , or  woven leather . You also can’t go wrong with a standard black or brown for their wear-forever quality.  Sizes available : 7-13 (including half sizes)

Features : Leather upper, leather outsole, exposed stitching

men's travel loafers

Does it get more classic than a pair of blue suede shoes? These sleek slip-ons feature a more narrow toe box, giving them a dressier vibe, but the blue suede material is an equally great choice for more casual looks, like with a pair of seersucker shorts for your trip to Mexico this winter. And at this price point? A fantastic steal. Sizes available : 7.5-15 (including half sizes)

Features : Suede upper, rubber outsole, removable cushioned insole

men's travel loafers

We love the vintage appeal of these tasseled loafers. They look like the perfect shoe choice to go with a pair of Madras trousers and a cable-knit sweater. These slip-ons feature a ton of unexpected details like the woven leather construction at the toe box, the side stitching that runs along the length of the shoe, and, of course, the fun kiltie on top. There’s a lot to look at, sure, but they’ve included comfort touch points, too, such as a textile lining that will make these easy to wear with or without socks. Sizes available : 8-13 (including half and wide sizes)

Features : Leather upper, rubber outsole, molded memory-foam insole

men's travel loafers

American designer Todd Snyder partnered with Italian style icon Luca Rubinacci on a collection of Belgian loafers that come in a variety of materials and colors. This pair in green velour is very classic-with-a-twist on a silhouette first introduced by Henri Bendel in the 1940s. Belgian loafers, with their unusual tongue shape and quirky leather bow, are a popular choice for more formal occasions. (For instance, they’d be great if you’re heading to a European ball.) But in recent years, they’ve been showing up on more casual outfits, too, proving their enduring versatility. We’re also partial to this newly launched version in croc leather , which is elegance personified.  Sizes available : 8-12

Features : Velour upper, leather lining, leather outsoles

men's travel loafers

We can’t talk about loafers without including Gucci, especially if you’re looking for a pair with hardware. I’ve always admired the brand’s Horsebit loafers, and after landing my post-college magazine job in 2007, my first real splurge was on a pair that looked a lot like these (except mine were suede in a light shade of camel). They look a lot like a classic pair of penny loafers, but the yellow-gold hardware adds that dash of glamour the brand is famous for. Sizes available : 5.5-14.5 (including half sizes)

Features : Leather upper, leather outsoles, gold-tone hardware

men's travel loafers

If you’re going to splurge on loafers, I would recommend going for a classic silhouette from a brand known for shoemaking over a more fashion-forward pair. These made-in-Italy slip-ons are a perfect choice: The supple burnished calfskin leather looks super luxe, while the Goodyear construction makes the shoe impossibly lightweight and flexible. (You can nearly fold it in half).  Wear it with a crisp navy suit for a destination wedding or with a great pair of jeans for a more casual day of shopping in Paris . Sizes available : 6-12.5 (including half sizes)

Features : Leather upper, leather outsole, leather lining, Goodyear construction

In order to uncover the best travel shoes for men, we reached out to frequent flyers, road warriors and guys who live out of suitcases to find what’s on their feet. After polling 20 travelers for their favorites, a few clear winners emerged: On’s Cloud 5 won as the best travel shoe for walking, with its lightweight and cushioned design, while APL’s Streamline are the best travel shoes you can work out in. If you’re traveling for business, Cole Haan’s Chukka Boot and Allbirds’ classic Wool Runners are top picks.

The best travel shoes for men are stylish, rugged, lightweight and well cushioned for serious treks. ... [+]

While there are plenty of functional shoes you can wear on a trip, the experts don’t settle for just-ok pairs. The winners here had to meet specific criteria. They’re stylish but comfortable, rugged but sleek enough to fit into a carry-on. They’re also easy to slip on and off in a hurry and well cushioned for long days on your feet. And they don’t skimp on traction either, whether you’re navigating cobblestones in Boston or icy streets in Gstaad. Here, all the best travel shoes for men that come highly recommended from our panel of pros.

Best Walking Shoes For Travel

Terminal-friendly footwear.

The On Cloud 5 received several votes from our expert panel. “They are the Range Rovers of shoes—every Wall Street guy has them,” says Lars Munson, who splits his time between Charleston, South Carolina, and New York. With good reason: These sneakers are easy to slip off (and back on) in an airport security line, thanks to their speed lace-locking system, and they are also lauded for containing 44 percent recycled materials—and being lightweight and comfortable. “They are good for walking long distances through expansive new airport terminals, like at LGA,” adds Munson. If you plan to wear them around Seattle, or another notoriously rainy destination, shell out an extra $30 for the On Cloud 5 Waterproof .

Best Slip-On Shoes For Travel

Easy-breezy styling, vans classic slip-on shoe.

This iconic skateboarding shoe is all grown up, and is being spotted on men in airports all over the world. “Traveling with my Vans Classic Slip-Ons is a total game-changer—while everyone else is wrestling with their shoes at airport security, I can easily slip these shoes on and off in seconds,” says Forbes Vetted gear editor Cam Vigliotta , who buys these subtly stylish canvas shoes in neutral colors like black or charcoal for a more polished look. But if you can’t resist the classic skateboard check pattern, choose a muted colorway like Harry Styles, who has been spotted traveling in the Vans Authentic.

Best Workout Sneakers For Travel

An attractive performance sneaker, apl streamline.

APL’s have a loyal legion of fans, due to their style, durability, and versatility. Sleek enough to wear to work but technical enough to work out in, they save you from having to cram an extra pair of running shoes into your carry-on. “I use them for travel and exercise. They even perform well on a pickleball court…well, better than I do anyway,” says Will Sledge, of Mobile, Alabama. Karson Chivas, who lives in Tampa and has a home in Miami, is also a believer. “I wear these when I’m traveling or doing a lot of walking—and I like them for work because they are subtle, and don’t have an in-your-face logo,” says Chivas. “I own eight pairs.” (Streamlines are currently available in 69 colorways, so owning a wardrobe of them is not uncommon.)

Best Business-Casual Shoes For Travel

The ultimate crossover shoe, allbirds wool runners.

A sneaker that doesn’t look like a sneaker, Allbirds’ versatility makes it a favorite among travelers. “They feel like sneakers, but the non-descript dark sole makes them look like a work shoe,” says one of the travelers we spoke to who lives in Chicago. Made from superfine ZQ Merino wool, they feel as cozy as a sweater, while thermoregulation keeps feet from getting too hot. Plus, you can feel good about wearing them because the wool is grown using regenerative farming practices that help prevent climate change.

Best Cushioned Shoes For Travel

Superior comfort during long days, kizik vegas.

Nondescript isn’t often used as a compliment, but in this case, it’s the very highest of praise. Caleb King, director of engineering at Forbes, wears these supple leather tennis shoes to the office because they are sophisticated enough to pass for work shoes. The Rabbit Foam outsoles ensure a cushiony commute, and the heel of the shoes collapse when you step into them (and then snap right back into the place), making them easy to step in and out of at the airport.

Best Rugged Shoes For Travel

Perfect for hiking a trail—or across town, hoka anacapa breeze low.

This shoe racks up awards: It earned The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal of Acceptance, which recognizes footwear that promotes foot health, and it’s made out of the Leather Working Group (LGW) Gold-Rated nubuck leather (the LGA is a nonprofit organization that promotes responsible leather practices that support positive social and environmental change.) Designed for hiking in warm climates (note the grippy Vibram outsole) the Hoka Anacapa Breeze Low is equally good for trekking through airports, cities, and wherever else your adventures take you. “They are perfect for every stage of travel. The shoe's ventilated upper keeps my feet cool, so I don't have to be that guy who takes my shoes off on the plane,” says Vigliotta. “And the cushy midsole makes it easy to walk for miles in pain-free comfort.

Best Work Shoes For Travel

Dressy, but not too formal, cole haan original grand moc toe chukka boot.

If you book client dinners right after work, this is the shoe for you. “It looks like a work shoe, but it’s still informal enough to go out in,” says Nick O’Grady, who lives in Minneapolis. The “desert”-style boot has been reimagined with a flexible rubber sole, and Cole Haan’s Grandfoam cushioning ensures a blister free walk, whether you’re traipsing through airport terminals or through a city. “It literally feels like you are walking on a pillow,” O’Grady says.

Best Stylish Shoes For Travel

Sophisticated and extremely comfortable.

Peter Millar

Peter Millar Excursionist Chukka Shoe

These have the lace-less, slip-on ease of a traditional loafer, but with more distinctive styling. (Peter Millar updated the classic military-inspired chukka by making them lower-cut and removing the traditional laces). Water-resistant (which is impressive for suede) and offering sneaker-like comfort, they are a favorite of Stephen Pozatek of New Canaan, CT. “I like the ¾ height, and that they can work in both a formal or casual environment.”

Best Chelsea Boots For Travel

Rugged and handsome on the road.

R.M. Williams

R.M. Williams Comfort Craftsman

These boots have been being handmade in Australia since 1932, and have classic yet modern appeal. Meticulously crafted using a single piece of leather that softens with each wear, they have a rubber welt sole that makes them well-suited to trekking through cities. “They are rugged yet dressy, and just very versatile,” says Adam Borod who wears them to work in New York City and on trips throughout Europe. The pull on construction is perfect for travel, but what really sets the R.M. Williams apart is their style. Everyone we showed these to immediately said they were going to buy a pair.

Best Packable Shoe For Travel

Can be crammed into the smallest of carry-ons, suavs the zilker.

Slim and flexible, these sustainable shoes can be packed completely flat to save space in your bag. Gordon Watson, who lives in San Diego, likes that they slip on easily, and that The Zilker’s moisture absorbing materials allow them to be worn with or without socks. What’s more, the shoe is constructed to magically conform to any foot shape (ranging from narrow to wide), and the sole is extra grippy—perfect for schlepping down slippery streets.

Best Waterproof Shoes For Travel

Good boots for bad weather, blundstone classic 550 boots.

These are especially popular for travelers who have to brave the elements—for work or play. Stephen Kennedy, who lives in Bedford, NY, but opened a School of Rock franchise in Ireland, likes their waterproof construction. “They are dressy enough for work but comfortable and practical for Irish weather—and I also wear them when I go over to Austria.” Borod has also worn them while exploring the Dolomites and walking around town at night in Ortisei. The brand’s iconic pull on tabs make them easy to get on and off, water-resistant leather keeps feet dry, and amped-up shock absorption takes the brunt of the impact as you walk.

How We Chose The Best Travel Shoes For Men

In order to create this list of the best men’s travel shoes, our writer, along with our team of editors, sifted through popular men’s sneakers, dress shoes, and crossovers (as well as shoes made by lesser known, up-and-coming brands), and evaluated them based on versatility, durability, comfort, and style. We then compared our results with recommendations from our experts. The shoes that topped both our list, and theirs, made the final cut.

No matter where your travels take you, a pair of comfortable shoes is a necessity. For cold- and warm-weather trips, you’ll be thankful to have supportive footwear with you for walking through the airport and sightseeing.

When it comes to recommending the best men’s travel shoes, Travel + Leisure ’s team of expert product testers tried 20 pairs of comfy kicks. Whether we were walking, commuting, running, or working out, we evaluated each pair based on comfort, quality, value, and fit to compile our list of options below. We love the supportive fit and minimal design of the Hoka Clinton 8 sneakers for all types of travel activities. If sneakers aren’t your jam, we also have picks for comfy boots for the cold and cushioned sandals for tropical vacations.

Best Overall

Hoka one one clifton 8.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Responsiveness 5 /5
  • Stability 5 /5

There is plenty of support and cushioning, and the minimalist design makes these a versatile pair of daily walking or running shoes.

These are performance shoes designed for running.

Hoka sneakers are known for being some of the best on the market, and we think so, too, after testing and loving the Clifton 8 running shoes. From heel to toe, the design of the sneakers is simple, lightweight, and, most importantly, extremely comfortable after we put some serious miles on them  around the city over a six-month period. The mesh upper is breathable for days when your feet get a little sweaty, and the padded tongue adds extra cushioning, so it doesn’t dig into the top of your foot. Hoka’s signature Meta-Rocker sole provides the foundation for an ultra-comfy sneaker, as the curved design feels supportive and bouncy, and the EVA midsoles have just the right amount of cushioning for a soft and absorbing feel for walking long distances.

When it comes down to quality, we’re confident these shoes will last for plenty of trips that are walking-heavy. The Hoka Clifton offers a lightweight and comfortable way to easily navigate a city or explore your own town.

Best Budget

Vans comfycush old skool.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

These casual sneakers have just the right amount of arch support.

It might be difficult to slip these shoes on and off.

We’re happy to report that the Comfycush Old Skool sneakers have the same casual style as traditional Vans but boast built-in arch support that thoroughly impressed us with their comfort. Even after wearing these regularly for six months, the sole feels thick and supportive and the canvas upper fits snugly without feeling too tight. The high quality immediately stood out to us and the shoes felt more durable than other Vans we've tested.

The laces can be tied nearly up to the ankle, so they’re not the easiest shoes to slip on and off. However, we love that even with the laces tied up, the tongue doesn’t pinch or cause any discomfort, and we’re fans of the secure fit for walking long distances. While most Vans styles can cost over $100, we love that the Comfycush Old Skool sneakers are wallet-friendly and come with ample cushioning.

The Details: 3.5 to 13 | Canvas, cotton, rubber

Best Sustainable

Allbirds tree dasher 2.

The upper, midsole, and sole are all made using eco-friendly materials with a minimal carbon footprint.

They don't feel like heavy-duty shoes you would want to wear walking for miles.

We’re big fans of Allbird’s transparency when it comes to the sustainable materials and methods they use to make their products, including their Tree Dasher 2 sneakers. From heel to toe, these lightweight walking shoes are made with environmentally-friendly materials like a eucalyptus tree fiber upper, a sugarcane-based green EVA midsole, and an  FSC-certified natural rubber  outsole. We love that they're light enough that you could pack these without taking up too much weight in your luggage. Plus, after wearing these regularly for six months, we found them to be extremely comfortable, easy to take on and off, and they don't hurt on long flights.

Besides the sustainability factor, we love that the sneakers are super breathable, making them the ideal closed-toe shoe for tropical climates. While the soles are very soft and cushioned, we wish there was a tad more support for  walking long distances , but we were plenty comfortable while wearing the sneakers to work and running errands. When it rained, the upper did an excellent job warding off the elements, so we didn’t feel any dampness. After trying several pairs of Allbirds sneakers, these stood out for their breathable and sustainable design for traveling.

The Details: 8 to 14 | FSC-certified Tencel Lyocell (eucalyptus tree fiber), sugarcane-based green EVA, FSC-certified natural rubber

Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles

  • Quality 4.5 /5

They feel like wearing cozy slippers with arch support.

There was a small break-in period.

Allbirds continued to impress us during testing, so our next category winner goes to the brand’s Wool Runner Mizzles. Over a period of six months, these became a go-to everyday shoe as they're comfortable for whatever you have planned. Arguably the best part of these cozy kicks is that the upper is made with a plush ZQ merino wool that gives you the feel of a slipper without the appearance of a slipper. These sneakers don’t have the traditional sporty look of a running shoe — they look a bit more elevated or professional. And with ample arch support, cushioning, and traction on the bottom, these are the perfect shoes for wearing while walking around a city or for a  nice dinner .

At first, the tongue of the shoe dug into the top of the foot, but with just a few wears, the upper stretched out a bit, and it became a non-issue. However, we were pleased that the shoe fits true to size and continues to contour to the shape of the foot as more miles get put on the sneakers.

The Details: 8 to 14 | ZQ-certified merino wool, sugarcane-based green EVA, FSC-certified natural rubber

Best for Walking

On cloud 5 shoe.

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

The shoe is very lightweight and easy to slip on and off at the airport.

After six months of heavy, everyday use, the shoes began to break apart.

We think the On Running Cloud 5 sneakers are the best pair of kicks to slide on for comfort and support on the go. We found that the flexible polyester upper allows the shoes to easily slip on and off, making them the ultimate airport footwear. Plus, the brand’s Zero-gravity foam midsole and rubber sole have the perfect balance of support and flexibility. These are lightweight shoes made with high-quality materials, so they look stylish as well. While these sneakers are technically designed for running, we think they are best as walking shoes for travelers looking for a shoe with a more relaxed fit. Because of the lightweight materials, these are super easy to pack in a suitcase or backpack for saving weight and space in a carry-on.

The Details: 7 to 14 | Recycled polyester, Zero-gravity foam, rubber

Best for Workouts

Apl techloom tracer.

  • Comfort 4.3 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

The soles feel very supportive, and the shoe itself is designed for low- to high-intensity workouts.

The shoes were a bit stiff at first.

We love a versatile pair of shoes like the APL Men’s TechLoom Tracer that combines comfort and support for a range of activities like walking, running or strength training. While these are technically performance sneakers designed for workouts, we found the kicks to be exceptionally supportive for walking through the city and traveling during a  weekend getaway .

And when you want to get in a quick workout at the hotel gym, we think the stiffer ankle and heel cushioning certainly helps with stability and support for leg day. Although the shoe has a solid amount of stiffness, APL’s Propellium EVA midsole and rubber outsole provide plenty of cushion and shock absorption. We found these sneakers run true to size, and the breathable lycra upper is flexible for foot width but also fits those with narrow feet perfectly, too.

The Details: 7 to 15 | Lycra, rubber

Blundstone Men’s Classic 550 Chelsea Boots

  • Durability 3.5 /5

The leather and sturdy construction feel premium and durable.

The boot can’t be resoled.

To avoid frigid toes while  traveling in the cooler months , a pair of 550 Blundstones will do the trick. Crafted with a water-resistant leather upper and elastic sides for breathability, we were immediately impressed by the durable design of these boots. The construction of the boot allows for extreme comfort right out of the box with no break-in period. We found the boots run true to size, and because of the elastic sides, they fit nicely around the ankles without any tightness or discomfort. After wearing the boots in the mud in the countryside and during a rainstorm without any damage to the materials or wet feet, we’re confident these Chelsea boots will stand the test of time. The biggest drawback for us is that the shoes can’t be resoled, so you’ll want to make sure to take good care of them to prolong their longevity.

The Details: 4 to 14 | Leather, rubber

Best Sandals

Teva hurricane xlt2 sandals.

The straps are super comfortable, and the soles have the same support as sneakers.

We wish there were half sizes available.

The Teva Hurricane XLT2 Sandals are the perfect footwear to take you from  the beach  to the river in comfort. We love that these sandals don’t have a break-in period, as they were instantly comfy while wearing them for the first time and still feel like new after wearing them regularly for six months. The quick-dry polyester straps don’t dig in or cause any redness, and the EVA footbed is both supportive and cushioned. The sole is much more like a thick, durable sneaker or a running shoe than a cheap sandal. After three days of basically constant use, including in the pool and on the beach, we saw no visible wear. While we wish these Tevas came in half sizes, we love that there are three straps on either sandal that can be adjusted to customize the fit accordingly, so for that reason, we suggest sizing up if you’re in between sizes.

Best Slip-on

Kizik men's lima.

  • Comfort 4.8 /5
  • Value 4.6 /5

They're breathable with excellent traction.

The heel can feel a bit loose.

Kizik thought about everything when designing the Limas — from the bouncy Rabbit Foam outsoles to extra ankle padding and a spacious toe box, these are some of the most comfortable shoes we tested. After wearing around the house for less than an hour, these shoes were broken in and ready for long walks. While these slip-ons have a looser heel than most sneakers, they don't chafe or slip while you walk. The knit uppers are incredibly breathable, so your feet don't become hot and sweaty even in warm climates, but the insoles are machine washable if you do find they need a refresh. These shoes are made of durable, high-quality materials that are great for packing and sure to last for years to come.

Most Versatile

Thursday boots low top.

Thursday Boots

  • Comfort 3 /5

These unique shoes combine the functionality of sneakers with the materials of a high-quality boot.

They needed a longer break-in period than we would have liked.

We love a pair of sleek sneakers that can be paired with any outfit and this pair from Thursday Boots blends the comfort of a sneaker with the durability of a boot. The outer is crafted with Natural Chromexcel Horween leather while the interior is lined with sheepskin for a soft and comfortable fit. The low tops also sport a dual density rubber outsole that improves traction without making you feel weighed down. While we do wish the shoes had a bit more arch support, they are still comfortable once broken in. They were also surprisingly breathable, considering the thick lining, and packed well in checked and carry-on bags.

Other Men’s Travel Shoes We Liked

The shoes below were close to making our list but did not make the cut due to several inconveniences during testing, including issues with durability and fit.

Hylo Light :  These sneakers are beyond comfortable, and they look nice enough to wear to work or the gym. However, after wearing them every day for several months, there was a noticeable amount of wear and tear (like, literal tears) that made us skeptical about their durability.

Tropicfeel Canyon Sneaker : These shoes fit well, they have great arch support, the laces don't pinch, and they're nice and breathable. However, we noticed when walking long periods of time, the insoles would slide up and out of the shoe because they aren't fully secured inside.

T+L expert product testers tried 20 pairs of boots, sneakers, and sandals over a period of six months to find men’s travel shoes with the best comfort, fit, value, and quality. Whether we were working in the office, running outdoors, or walking through the city, we rated each pair of shoes on a scale of one to five.

After unboxing the shoes, we did a thorough examination of the quality of the shoe. We asked our testers to look at their construction and note the initial quality of the materials. Then, we wore the shoes for three separate tests to judge the break-in period, the overall comfort after several hours of wear, and the durability of the materials after wearing the shoes for at least one full day (although many of our testers wore these shoes more than what we asked for).

In the end, the highest-scoring travel shoes we tested received glowing reviews for being exceptionally comfortable thanks to arch support and cushioning, fit perfectly right away with a minimal break-in period and are made with high-quality materials meant to last over the course of hundreds of miles.

Tips for Buying Men’s Travel Shoes

Size and width are key.

It’s important to have some wiggle room in your footwear to avoid possible discomfort when you’re on your feet all day. Whether you’re buying shoes in person or online, be sure to give yourself some time to try the shoes on before you leave the house. If your toes are pushed against the front or if the sides of your feet feel pinched, allow yourself enough time to exchange the shoes for a longer or wider size for optimal comfort.

Choose the right type of shoe for your destination

While sneakers might be your go-to shoe in general, there are plenty of other shoe styles, such as comfortable men's loafers , that are supportive enough for all-day wear. If you’re heading to a tropical destination, opt for a pair of sandals, and for a cold-weather trip, be sure to bring a pair of boots or warm sneakers.

Consider packing space

Travelers who prefer a carry-on suitcase should bring lightweight shoes that are more compact, like sneakers or sandals. If you’re heading to a spot where warmer shoes will be needed, consider wearing your boots or bigger shoes while traveling to save space.

To maximize suitcase space and protect your shoes, use a travel shoe bag and place them with the soles facing outward with the uppers toward each other. To prevent creases in sneakers or shoes with a fabric upper, you can stuff socks in to keep the shape while traveling.

It’s important to always read the manufacturer's instructions before cleaning a pair of shoes. If you’re on the go and don’t have access to a washing machine, you can spot-clean your shoes using water and soap if you’re in a pinch.

We recommend prioritizing travel shoes that are versatile, light, and easy to clean. Leather shoes travel well as they're quite durable and generally easy to clean, but do note leather tends to be heavier than other shoe materials. If you're thinking more about packing space and/or you're traveling to a warm-weather destination, textile shoes are great options as they tend to dry quickly and provide both breathability and comfort.

The best travel shoes are a lot like walking shoes : they're built with a level of comfort so you can stand and walk in them for hours. But unlike most walking shoes, a solid pair of travel shoes is much more cushioned, and are also easier to pack into your suitcase. That means they come in clutch if you're dashing at the airport, or lounging at the hotel lobby.

What to Consider

The most important factor is a combination of comfort and support. You don't want to wear toasty slippers if you're driving in the car or trekking through the airport, and you don't need to wear some lace-up hiking boots to get the best support possible. Some travel shoes can lean more on comfort (Oofos, Hoka), while others can lean more towards support (Amberjack, Blundstone). The key is to find a happy medium here and get what suits you and the travel situation at hand the best. For example, if you're taking a long flight to another country, it's probably best to aim for more comfort-leaning travel. But if you're making a drive to a weekend getaway, a shoe with more support (and a tougher build) will likely serve as a better choice.

Packability

Unless you plan on wearing a bigger shoe en route to your destination, your travel shoes should be packable. Certain shoes fit better into different sizes of luggage. To assist in the packing process, we assessed which type of travel bag is the ideal minimal size for packing each shoe: Backpack , Carry-On , or Checked Bag . The criteria used were weight, size, and how easily each shoe could be compressed or folded without looking funky once you arrive at your destination. For example, the Amberjack Original is lightweight for a dress shoe but doesn't compress or fold up, so it should go in a carry on bag, at least.

Travel shoes should also be lightweight, and yes, boots can be lightweight too. Dodge any shoe that's got heavy outsoles and avoid materials that are thick and trap heat. Instead, opt for shoes with foam builds and breathable construction.

How We Selected

We consulted with Men's Health writers and editors on the best travel shoes for men in 2024. Experts, including our gear and commerce editor, John Thompson, reviewed a number of travel shoes and evaluated their comfort, weight, and packability. We also considered price point, as some travel shoes promise a better overall value than others

Below, we rounded up the best travel shoes for all types of jet-setting needs. The picks might not all look like they belong in the same boat, but when you see how they all fit, you'll find each travel shoe we selected serves a unique purpose. Ready to see what's in store?

As it turns out, all it took to make this cozy house slipper into a great travel shoe was a suede upgrade. Lusso Cloud has been producing a range of comfortable slippers and casual slides for years now. With a proprietary three layer sole, every pair offers foamy cushioning, along with a springy bounce. The inside contains a lush fabric that feel great on your feet.

Now that the Nomad, one of the startup's bestsellers, comes in a brushed suede upper. It has transitioned from lounge apparel to the ultimate in-transit shoes. The heel has a fold down feature, which not only turns the shoe into a mule, it makes for easy flat packing. It gives off the elevated appearance of a plain toe loafer, and who doesn't like to look their best while traveling?

After having some experience with the original model, we had to take this upgrade for a spin. After a train trip that took over an hour each way, and a few hours spend sitting at a desk, the cushioning held up strong. Where the Lusso Ckoud really shines is on the move. The specially designed outsole has a touch of bounce, similar to a running shoe, while feeling as light as a house slipper on your feet.

Oofos is most known for its out-of-this-world recovery slides , but the brand has since expanded into other footwear styles. This slip-on shoe style packs top-tier cushioning with a breathable upper that can be taken on and off with ease. We like sliding these bad boys on for long flights as well as for general lounging shoes for wherever your accommodations might be (hopefully a resort somewhere exotic).

The two occasions where this travel shoe really shines is during airline travel and while staying at warm weather resorts. Whether you like to keep your toes contained during long flights or set them free, this is the right footwear for the job. The light and airy design is great for warm weather because it breaths so well and minimizes stress on your feet. If water is involved, this slip-on also dries very quickly.

The Ravello Loafer could be described as a house slipper disguised as a loafer, and we mean that in the best way possible. Constructed from a soft textile upper and a flexible rummer outsole, you get the cozy feel of your favorite lounge shoes, but dressier. Even though it isn't leather, Rothys checked all the necessary boxes with this loafer. It pulls off business casual and cocktail attire with ease.

This is the ideal shoe for summer destination weddings because you don't have to pack any other footwear, except maybe some sandals . You can wear this loafer while traveling, especially if a flight is involved, and you can also wear it with a light summer suits . Doing any sight seeing while you're there? This comfy slip on is supportive enough to walk around in all day.

Designed for work, yet cozy enough for play, the Snibbs ROVR is an ideal travel sneaker because it provides all-day comfort. Chef Daniel Schemtob consulted with two doctors to design a lifestyle shoe that can be worn in hot and slipper work environments. The resulting sneaker is not only optimized for restaurant workers and medical professionals, it benefits anyone who spends most of the day on their feet. For example; a tourist who wants to pack all the major sights of a city into a single trip.

A knit mesh upper is lightweight and breathable to combat sweaty feet. Under that, an EVA molded midsole provides ample cushion and bounce in every step. Designed to slip on and off, the upper hugs your foot like a sock. It can even handle those mad dashes to catch your connecting flight.

Some brands really do make 'em like they used to. The Portuguese shoemaker is new to the American market by way of an exclusive partnership with Huckberry. A soft leather interior and padded footbed are meant to go barefoot. With a waxy finish on the upper, there is minor water resistance.

Thanks to a classic leather plain toe look, this travel slip-on works with a wide variety of looks. We like to wear it with everything, from a casual chino suit to swim trunks .

What really sets this mule apart is the crepe outsole. You typically find the material on desert boots and the odd chelsea boot , but it is actually ideal for a travel shoe. The spongy composite is shock absorbing and provides an almost sticky grip. When it wears out—which will happen sooner than later—it is the cheapest type of sole to replace.

Espadrilles are a type of footwear, originating in Spain, with a cotton canvas upper sewn to a woven jute sole. Jute is a rope made from braided plant fiber, similar to hemp. It makes for a light, durable, and supportive footbed that is breathable and naturally moisture regulating. All of these factors make espadrilles perfectly suited for warm weather travel, especially at beaches, lakes, and pools.

Soludos is one of the few major brands still selling authentic espadrilles with real jute soles. Every pair is handcrafted in a way that makes them repairable when any wear and tear occurs. The Seville Smoking Slipper has a cotton canvas upper with a classic slipper shape that comes in a variety of colors and patterns, making for easy vacation styling. Stowing this slipper away is even easier, as it flattens to take up about as much room as a pair of flip-flops.

Hey Dude has taken men's footwear by storm over the past couple of years. The shoes are also super easy to throw on, making them a pair of great summer shoes. Best of all is the fact it is insanely affordable too. Simply put, don't knock 'em until you try 'em.

As long as the attire is casual, there really is no wrong setting for this low-key slip-on. Relaxed vibes are practically sewn right into the sole. However, if you're headed to a watery local, like a beach, lake, or water park, then Hey Dudes really shine. The cushy sole floats in water, so that avoids any sinking mishaps. The whole shoe also dries off very quickly, so it as about as water friendly as a shoe can get.

Dress shoes for traveling can actually be comfortable. Take this pair of oxfords from Amberjack. Named The Original, this shoe is built with heat-activated arch support, durable outsoles, and breathable upper materials (especially suede). Best of all is the fact it can be worn with business casual fits and with more formal business attire.

Think of this travel shoe as optimizing your business trips. The dual density outsole, which is softer in the heel for cushioning and harder at the arch for support, is built to handle extensive walking. If you have to sprint to catch a train, hike from security to your gate, or show out on the dance floor, this is the oxford you want to be wearing.

If you're going for cushioning, then a pair of Hoka's latest Clifton 9 running shoes will serve you right. The Clifton line has been a staple for our fitness editorsm thanks to its lightweight build and supreme level of comfort. When paired up with something dressier, like a loafer for warm weather or an oxford for cooler temperatures, you can cover pretty much any travel situation with.

It won't necessarily pack well in a travel backpack or personal item because of its high-stack cushioning, but if you wear it from point A to point B, you can also double up and have them as a walking shoe or workout shoe on your trip. In fact, it's entirely possible you could go on an entire trip with just this pair of shoes if you really wanted to one-bag-travel the whole thing.

Wearing your favorite boots while you travel is a simple hack to free up space in your suitcase. So which pair of boots are the best? We're big on Blundstones. The #585 is tough as nails, comfortable as heck (with little to no break-in period), and easy to slip on and off. As a Chelsea boot, it pairs well with jeans or chinos for an on-the-go outfits. You can get at least a week out of a couple pairs of pants and a few shirts with this single shoe.

If cold temperatures and precipitation are in the forecast for your vacation, this rugged Chelsea boot will serve you well. The upper is waterproof and the outsole provides slip-resistant traction. While this travel boot isn't insulted, when paired with a good boot sock , it is very warm. Any mud or dirt can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth, to avoid bringing any mess along for the next leg of your adventure.

What Else to Consider

Versatility.

Regardless of where your personal needs lie, your travel shoes must be versatile. You don't want to wear them once on the plane and then never again on your trip. That's just dead weight. Hence the reason why our travel shoes above can feel a bit like a mixed bag. Some of our travel shoe picks are great for lounging once you get to your destination, while others are made to power through your entire trip, whether it be a formal dinner event or a day full of walking.

What Are the Best Men’s Loafers?

men's travel loafers

From ’80s preps to Succession (Kendall favors Loro Pianas), the loafer has always been a consistently cool shoe and perhaps the most versatile item in your wardrobe. “ Loafers are the epitome of effortless transitional footwear,” says Kevin Kafesu, a former buyer at Norse Store in Copenhagen. Kafesu says that if you choose well, loafers are the most comfortable shoes you can own. “Generally, the structure of most options — soft leather, sturdy bottom, slip-on design — tend to be crafted with comfort in mind, keeping you right on your feet for long-hour days.” Jian DeLeon, men’s fashion director at Nordstrom, loves how a loafer spans subcultures to fit a range of styles — punk right down to Americana. “The loafer has been a mainstay on the feet of cool kids for a while; it certainly isn’t going anywhere,” he says. “It hits that sweet spot of ‘classic with a twist’ that makes modern menswear staples so exciting.”

Another benefit of loafers, says Jeremy Kirkland , the creator and host of the menswear podcast Blamo! , is that they slowly shift and mold to your feet . Once you break them in, the fit can feel perfect. His biggest suggestion is to pick a pair that begin in a shape that’s close to that of your foot. “Different companies have adjusted their lasts (the mold a shoe is made on) over the years to accommodate a wide range of feet ,” he explains. So when you find one you like, stick with it.

We spoke to DeLeon, Kafesu, Kirkland, and nine other stylish men to discover the best loafers at every price point. Here are their picks, including the best penny loafers, tassel loafers, and horse-bit loafers.

Best loafers under $200

Dr. Martens Adrian Core Tassel Loafers

The Dr. Martens Adrian loafer comes recommended by three of our style experts. “First and foremost, they just look the business,” says Paul Toner, online editor of 10 Magazine . For Toner, they’re as wearable for a friend’s wedding as they are for a chill day out. “There’s a classicism to them that makes them ideal to both dress up and dress down.” DeLeon agrees and also loves their versatility in fitting different styles. Both Toner and Kafesu say their Dr. Martens are surprisingly durable. Toner is still wearing a pair he bought six years ago. Meanwhile, Kafesu wears a pair from 2018 “on a weekly basis.” Kafesu says it’s down to the expertly crafted leather structure — a black polished smooth type, with the upper and sole both heat-sealed and sewn together — that makes them top of the range despite the lower price point (the shoes are designed in London’s Camden but made in various countries across Asia). “The Adrians are a classic, and their comfort is unmatched thanks to the bouncy soles,” says Kafesu. “But beware, that leather is so good it takes a while to break in. Remember to pack Band-Aids for those first few wears unless you want to walk around like a penguin.”

G.H. Bass & Co. Lexington Tassel Weejuns

Strategist columnist Chris Black is a fan of the classic Bass Weejuns . “This is some real Take Ivy shit, but I am here for it,” he says. “These have moc stitching, which I love, and the price is right . Affordable stunting: You love to see it.”

Wolf & Shepherd Monaco Loafers

“I’ve been wearing loafers for as long as I can remember,” says Strategist contributor Chadner Navarro . “I own over two dozen pairs, and the ones I’ve been living in for nearly a year are Wolf & Shepherd’s Monaco loafers in cognac.” Navarro says the unlined soft Italian suede is perfect for traveling. “You really can flatten them down without feeling like you’re going to destroy them. I enjoy how the shape is narrower, giving it a slightly dressier silhouette without being witchy-pointy.” Plus, the back part of the shoe that covers your heels folds down, so you can rock them as mules.

Best loafers under $400

Blackstock & Weber The Mason Horse Bit Loafers

Blackstock & Weber was recommended by multiple stylish men we consulted, including former Strategist associate editor Louis Cheslaw. “When I want to wear a pair of loafers more casually, I’m wearing my Blackstock & Webers,” he says. “While my other dress shoes only really work with more formal outfits, B&W’s chunkier, more modern, almost sneakerlike shape slots in easily with wide jeans, shorts, and gym socks as well as suits.” Jordan Bunker , a menswear writer and blogger , says, “You can easily see how a pair of Blackstock & Webers could be worn 24/7. You don’t call yourself ‘ The Best F - - - - - - Loafers in the World ’ without being multifunctional.” These loafers took design elements, like a more rounded toe and chunkier sole, from classic sneakers. They also use pebble-grain leathers, vibrant colors, and premium suedes that turn loafers into a shoe for a more modern era of dressing. “It’s putting a playful spin to loafers,” says Kafesu. “And thankfully, the company still acts like a classic shoemaker. The designs are timeless, the materials are the highest quality, and there are experts on hand to help with any questions you might have before purchasing,” adds Cheslaw.

Dr. Martens Adrian Loafers (Made in England)

If you’d like to spend a little extra, Dr. Martens has a Made in England range, where the shoes are made in the company’s original factory in Northampton.

Morjas Penny Loafers

These are the only penny loafers Nicolas Lazaro, editorial manager at Buck Mason, will wear; in fact he owns three pairs. “Asking to pick a favorite among them is like asking to pick a favorite child,” he says. His Black Calfs are the ones he wears the most, though he likes to pair his Brown Grain loafers with tweeds and denim as a good fall and winter option. “I like the plays on texture here; there’s pebble grain down to suede, and a refinement usually associated with brands at a higher price point,” he adds. He has had to pay slightly more for them this past year but still thinks the price is worth it: “I think it’s a testament to the quality that I’m still wearing mine nearly every day. They don’t skimp or do any other corner-cutting to reduce costs.”

Duke + Dexter x Percival Rattan Penny Loafers

London brand Percival is usually known for its sleek, tailored menswear rather than shoes, but Lazer, the founder of Nobo Agency, flags its collaboration with shoe brand Duke + Dexter as his favorite. “It’s luxury craftsmanship at an amazing price point,” he says. The penny loafers are made from a mix of Italian suede and leather and a compounded rubber sole that means they’re built to last.  There are two designs in the collection, both inspired by an English garden. Lazer especially likes the detailing, adding that “they complement various outfits; they’re perfect for any event.”

Best loafers worth splurging on

Church's Pembrey Leather Loafers

Church’s is a heritage brand dating back to the 1800s, known for shoes made by hand in Northampton, England. For Bunker, its Pembrey loafers are some of the most reliable in his wardrobe. He’s been wearing his pair for years, and they’re the ones he’s “ banked many steps in . I think if you’d have asked for an answer in three, five, or even ten years’ time, my love for the Pembrey would still be there,” he says. Virgil Nicholas, the creator of the footwear brand Vinny’s , also recommends the Pembrey. He says it has a heavy-duty construction; the shoes are Goodyear welted, which means the outsole, insole, and upper are stitched together with a strip of leather, and you get a sense of the craftsmanship once it’s on your feet (the brand favors calf leather, which easily molds to your feet). Timothy Grindle, co-owner, manager and buyer at Boulder-based clothing company Canoe Club , is a fan too: “The silhouette is just right — not too low and not too chunky,” he says. “They feel luxurious but also like I can run them into the ground.” And if you are hard-wearing with your shoes, note that the brand offers an in-house repair service to get them back into shape.

Paraboot Reims Loafers

Based in France, Paraboot is best known for its sturdy goat-leather moc-toe Michael shoe. But Kafesu says an investment in its cleated-sole Reims loafer will definitely pay off. “What I love about them is the unbeatable combination of durability and affordability considering they’re handmade in France,” he says. “These shoes are built like a tank. If you need any proof of their longevity, I noticed a brand owner wearing a 25-year-old pair in their Milan showroom some years back.”

Alden Leisure Hand Sewn Loafers

This is the loafer Kirkland has had the longest (for over six years). “It’s like the classic penny loafer. It has a wider last and can accommodate almost any foot,” he says. The flattering shape will appeal to people who are fans of the classic Ivy or trad style.

Gucci 1953 Horsebit Leather Loafers

Four of our experts recommended Gucci’s Horsebit loafers. They’re the longtime favorite of  Grindle’s. “If you hit me back in 2 years or 30 years, I can’t imagine answering differently. We have had no shortage of loafers come through the shop, but the Gucci loafer is the icon. It is clean, elegant, easy to dress up or down — it’s the perfect loafer.” Kafesu and DeLeon are also fans. DeLeon suggests opting for some of the newer statement colors of the shoe now on the market, like a dark forest green.

JM Weston Le Moc' Serie Loafers

DeLeon points out that while it is JM Weston’s 180 loafer that usually gets the most hype, the brand’s more casual Le Moc has become one of his recent favorites. “Not just because it’s slightly less expensive but because they come in more fun colors like an on-trend ice blue. Plus the suede uppers are comfortable from the first wear.”

The 13 Best Loafers to Buy This Spring

Loafers by Tod's, Church's and George Cleverley

From bright spring days through the long evenings of high summer, the loafer is a warm-weather MVP. Combining the lightweight ease of a casual slip-on with the elegance of traditional welted shoes, a good loafer holds the rare distinction of being a genuine all-rounder. Particularly now that dress codes have relaxed and show no sign of turning back, loafers have a renewed relevance in a man’s footwear wardrobe.

The most versatile among loafers is the classic penny. A rounded toe and a chunky hand-sewn apron make for a relaxed, casual piece that’s conservative enough to pair with tailored trousers but equally at home with chinos or even shorts. With no laces to tie and no occasion unsuitable, a good penny loafer will quickly become the mainstay of a warm-weather wardrobe. And that’s no bad thing—loafers will only increase in comfort and appeal with regular wear.

Tassel loafers are a more eye-catching alternative. Historically favored by a certain breed of East Coast lawyer ( even being cited in a dis by Ronald Reagan ), the tassel has largely shed its political associations and reconnected to its Ivy roots. In black calf, the tassel loafer is a serious dress shoe, but in chocolate suede, it’s softened into something more playful; less a straight face than a raised eyebrow.

The horsebit loafer is the rebel of the family. The Gucci model made famous by Wall Street traders is iconic, extravagant, and a little aggressive, though more recently other makers have started to offer designs that suggest calmer confidence.

Our picks for those styles, and every other essential loafer, below.

The editors of Robb Report scour the globe (and the Internet) for the best of the best and only endorse products we love—and think you’ll love, too. If you purchase a product or service through a link in this story, we may receive a small commission.

Carmina Suede Horsebit Loafers

men's travel loafers

Family-run shoemaker Carmina makes quality Goodyear-welted shoes on elegant lasts in Mallorca, Spain. It deserves praise for making high-grade Spanish shoemaking more accessible, but its offering is far from basic.

Here, its sumptuous take on the horsebit loafer: gold hardware, offset by the perfect shade of chocolate suede, crisply finished at the factory in the Balearic Islands.

Fear of God for Ermenegildo Zegna Driving Loafers

men's travel loafers

Streetwear’s downturn may mean that loafers are the new sneakers, but there’s still room for a thoughtfully designed hybrid, like this pair from Fear of God’s collaboration with Ermenegildo Zegna. The soft, unstructured uppers recall refined driving mocs, while the graphic rubber sole offers all the comfort and practicality of your favorite kicks.

Church’s “Clatford” Monk-Strap Loafers

men's travel loafers

Here’s an equally attractive hybrid from the more traditional end of the spectrum: apron-toe loafers with double monk-straps in place of the classic penny bar. It’s a fitting representation of Church’s English heritage and the Italian sprezzatura of its owner, Prada. The rakish style is an easy way to add some attitude to standard suits and smart-casual attire.

Tod’s Suede Loafers

men's travel loafers

While tassels are generally considered the most dandyish loafers, this model makes them look as easygoing as slippers. That’s largely thanks to the soft construction, as evidenced by the suede’s subtle rippling around the apron toe. Casual with a kick, this pair has great range.

Paraboot “Reims” Loafers

men's travel loafers

For all their lightness, loafers need not be delicate. The “Reims” model from storied French brand Paraboot is built with a Norwegian-welted, chunky rubber sole. It’s the kind of loafer you could take up a mountain, which is exactly what you’d expect from the Alpine heritage of its maker.

Rubinacci “Marphy” Suede Loafers

men's travel loafers

This style, known as a Belgian loafer, takes its name from a design that Belgian artisans have been crafting for some 300 years. Filling the void between espadrilles and proper dress shoes, it is a model beloved by leisurely blue bloods and menswear aficionados alike. Rubinacci’s riff on the classic comes in buttery coffee-colored suede accented with the traditional black piping and bow.

Edward Green “Polperro” Suede Penny Loafers

men's travel loafers

Edward Green is revered for the classic “Piccadilly” loafer, but don’t overlook its slouchier, more insouciant cousin, the “Polperro.” It’s made with a lightweight sole and soft suede, with a durable leather trim, and is even foldable for easy travel. The chocolate color will be useful all year but choose the sand suede for the ultimate summer shoe.

Alden Unlined Penny Loafer

men's travel loafers

The American classic. Alden’s penny loafer has a comfortable, generous fit and a hand-sewn apron. It’s a first-class example of the preppy favorite that has won fans from Boston to Tokyo. Choose the classic brown calf for its versatility, burgundy for a richer, more formal feel, or glossy, near-indestructible shell cordovan.

Baudoin & Lange “Sagan” Suede and Alligator Loafers

men's travel loafers

Baudoin & Lange have rightly won acclaim for their finely-balanced, slipper-soft Belgian shoes and simple, elegant penny loafers, but this doesn’t mean they are unadventurous. This lavish forest green model ups the ante with suede and eye-catching alligator, entirely handmade in England.

Stubbs and Wootton Venetian Apron-Toe Loafers

men's travel loafers

The Venetian loafer is a plain design without tassel, riding accessory, or anywhere to store loose change. It’s a shoe for unhurried fun, not far from the velvet slipper. This refined model from Palm Beach brand Stubbs & Wootton is handmade in Spain.

A black-tie classic from the master of American glamour. Tom Ford’s Italian-made evening shoe is a smooth wholecut loafer in shimmering patent leather, decorated with the same grosgrain silk as the facing of a tuxedo. At once decadent and at ease, it’s a winning formulation of leisured elegance.

THE POINT OF THIS LIST…

Make your shoe decision easy…, make you aware of some adventure ready travel shoes you hadn’t guessed….

With all of the “best travel shoe” lists out there, honestly most aren’t that helpful and the footwear recommends doesn’t stack up to the demands of real travel – lots of walking, hard use, and unexpectedly varied adventures.

This list delivers true travel ready footwear and aims to recommend “one bag” shoes, or a single pair of shoes that’ll last through all of your adventures helping you travel lighter, with a single bag – travels in which you walk and hike for miles, get wet, swim, wander, and more, ideally with a single shoe.  Travels in which you need durable footwear that performs through running walking and more and still looks good at night.

Every piece of footwear on this list is vetted by minimalist travelers who aim to explore, wander, and keep their bags light.  We’ve organized the list (its pretty long) by category so can jump to the footwear that meets your needs.  comfortable walking shoes , minimalist shoes , hiking boots for travel , versatile athletic shoes , and more.

BEFORE YOU BUY: WHAT YOU NEED IN A GOOD PAIR OF TRAVEL SHOES

#1 Comfort: A comfortable footbed (insole and outsole) and soft uppers that mold to your feet are the base of good walking shoes that enable you for miles and hours of wandering

#2 Toe Box Fit (Length and Width): Aim for enough room for foot swelling (when walking and standing for hours) plus enough room that your toes don’t touch the front of the shoe when walking downhill to avoid bruising on long hikes

#3 Secure Heel Cup Fit: A good heel cup locks your foot, minimizing sliding movement within the shoe and minimizing blisters

#4 Good sole traction and performance for your activity: Traction in your chosen conditions (rain, rocks, trails, slick city streets) and the suppleness/stiffness for your chosen activity (running, walking, hiking on rocky terrain)

#5 Breathability & Moisture Management: Allowing sweat vapor from your feet to escape easily before accumulating and allowing your shoes to dry as quickly as possible when wet

#6 Durability: Durable uppers, solid stitching, sole molded from a single piece of rubber, and reviews of long term use add up to a reliable pair of shoes to purchase

#7 Neutral, Versatile Style: Classic designs with versatile style (canvas, loafer, chukka, athletic etc.) in neutral colors add up to a shoe that can be worn for any occasion, casual to classy.

#8 Versatile Performance: Good performance over varied activities means more comfort through your adventures with less weight (and fewer shoes) to carry

#9 Lightweight and Packable: Shoes that are easily packed away for carryon travel when you’re not wearing them make one bag, lightweight travel much easier

#10 You actually like them: Never EVER buy a pair of shoes that you don’t like, regardless of what reviews and other people say.  You’ll never actually wear them, and you’ll hate yourself when you do.

HOW MANY PAIRS OF SHOES SHOULD YOU TAKE?

1 Shoe + 1 Sandal (+ optional athletic or hiking shoe)

First, a sandal and a shoe combo should be your base for travel.

Second, don’t feel ashamed if you take an extra pair of shoes just for running or hiking, if you’re a consummate runner/hiker.

A base travel shoe that is comfortable for walking and looks good should be the base of your travel footwear setup.   Low top options are best as they go just as well with shorts as jeans, and many low top options dress up better.

Then, add a good pair of comfortable, durable sandals to your setup.   Sandals are great in hot weather (you’ll wear them more than shoes in Southeast Asia), essential for tropical travels, and essential if you’re using shared showers.  Though flip flops do work, grabbing a trekking or running sandal, like Chacos or Xero Z-Trails adds an adventure ready set of footwear option that let’s foot breathe and is perfect for adventures on the water.

If you’re a consummate runner or hiker, don’t sell yourself short and completely skip the running or trekking shoes.

In my initial searches for the perfect “one bag travel” shoe, I attempted to force my shoes to do everything.  I ran and hiked in my Chuck Taylors, or I did traveler friendly Crossfit workouts in my hiking boots.  Though this option did work, it finally dawned on me – if I put that many miles on my running shoes or hiking boots, that’s a good thing and I shouldn’t necessarily pressure myself into leaving them at home.

Running, hiking, and working out are all healthy activities that enhance life in general, as well as travel.  If bringing a pair of minimalist running kicks or trek ready minimalist boots will resulting in you running or trekking more, and more enjoyably, just bring them.  Its worth it.

Personally, I still maintain one pair of shoes on short trips – either the Lems Boulder Boot, the Altama OTB Maritime, or the Sperry Topsider – and run in my Xero Z-Trails , but I’m comfortable with that.

Your shoe setup should keep you comfortable doing more of what you love, even if that means bringing extra shoes.

THE BEST TRAVEL SHOES FOR MEN BY CATEGORY

Unfortunately, there is no “perfect travel shoe” for men, women, or anyone in between.  While there are some fantastic “all-purpose shoes” for one bag travelers wandering the world for a year, most of us are better off planning our footwear based on our adventures.  If you’ll be in Europe and potentially wandering through the rocky, cool alps, plan accordingly.  If you’ll only be wandering tropical Southeast Asian countries mere miles from the ocean (and where no one wears shoes) plan accordingly.

Ultimately, pick the footwear that fits what you’ll be doing. That’s it.

Read on to discover the best travel shoes for men broken down by category to help you find the footwear that suits how you’ll travel and adventure.

THE MOST COMFORTABLE MEN’S WALKING SHOES FOR TRAVEL

  • Solomon X 3D
  • Allbirds Tree Skipper
  • Clark’s Desert Boot

LEMS BOULDER BOOTS

Possibly the most comfortable men’s walking shoes for travel.

The Lems Boulder Boot is a comfy, minimalist, travel boot that feels amazing, packs down small, and handles hiking, running, and working out with no problem.

Why:  The Lems Boulder Boot is one of the best travel shoes for men that are tat are feeling adventurous and plan to explore.  If you want to look good and be prepared to travel, but prefer boots over boat shoes and sneakers these are your choice.

I’ve run, hiked, and worked out in these and loved them.  I will, however, take my Altama OTB Maritime shoes instead, simply because I like the look of the Altama OTB and its versatility over the look of Lems’ Boulder Boot. Additionally, the Altama OTB is much more durable, but the Boulder Boot is hands down more comfortable.

For most men, when heavy walking in the city is a possibility, they immediately opt for a shoe – as I’ve done. However, if you’re planning lots of time moving on your feet, I highly recommend the Lems Boulder boot as it is the most comfortable mens walking shoes for travel, hiking, and versatile adventures I’ve tested. I wear mine on motorbike rides, planes, treks, and more, just because they’re so reliably comfortable.

If you’ll be spending a lot of time on your feet, its hard to beat the Lems Boulder Boot.

The Lems Boulder Boot packed - Best Travel Shoes for Men

Performance:  Minimalist soles are comfortable and feel great, but for long, multi-day treks, the wearer should fully comfortable walking in minimalist (e.g., thin sole, zero heel to toe drop) footwear

For the perfect setup for RTW travel, I recommend pairing these with the Xero Z-Trail sandals and  medium weight wool socks  to round out a shoe setup for all places and climates

The entire Allbirds line is touted by a handful of avid fans as being the most comfortable shoe they’ve ever worn, hands down.  Though Allbird’s most popular shoes are the wool runners, the eco-friendly Tree Runners are another comfy, lightweight, and walk ready shoe for your travel adventures.

men's travel loafers

These lightweight kicks with classic are actually made from Eucalyptus tree fiber knitted uppers (hence the “tree” skipper name) and as Allbirds describes is “…breathable, silky-smooth, and complete with a cooling effect to keep things breezy…” to give most of the same benefits as wool while being friendlier on the planet than plastic and petroleum based shoes.

The laces are made from 100% recycled polyester

The insoles are made of super-fine merino wool to keep your feet comfortably cool and dry, while the foam insole is made from castor bean oil (instead of petroleum based foams like other shoes) to make them even more eco-friendly.

men's travel loafers

Note that though wearers rave about Allbird’s comfort, some do complain about the wear life, and that they significant wear within a year if you’re a hard traveler.  This is somewhat of a known tradeoff and worth the comfort if you’re spending a ton of time on your feet.  However, if you plan to do an activity that applies a lot of force to your shoes (think sprinting and Crossfit) or your lifestyle will cause a lot of abrasion (think hiking on uneven terrain with bushes and jagged rocks) then opt for another shoe.

The Bottom Line on Allbirds Tree Skippers: if your travel style simply involves a lot of hours on your feet and lots of miles in concrete jungles (between museums and cafes) and you want something sleek yet comfortable, the Allbirds Tree Skippers may be what you’re looking for.

Also consider…Allbirds Wool Runners

The Allbirds WoolRunners are the OGs of the Allbirds line, and the shoe that got most Allbirds fans hooked. Superlight, flexy, and comfy soles combined with an all Merino wool upper create a comfy shoe that breathes insanely well and keeps your feet performing tops through most temperature and moisture conditions

Pair these with some solid ankle high or no show wool socks (I recommend the Darn Tough Tactical T4016 No Show Merino wool athletic socks )

CLARK’S DESERT BOOT

A classic pair of true traveler footwear since the 1700’s. .

men's travel loafers

Originally adapted and created in South Africa as kicks called “Veldskoens”, a similar piece of lightweight, desert friendly footwear worn by nearly everyone in South Africa, Nathan Clark eventually stumbled on this same boot in Cairo bazaar in the 1940’s.  He recreated the shoe into “Clark’s Desert Boot” which became the boot of choice for Army Officers during World War 2, and after that, the legacy stuck.

The shoe’s design roots, all of the way back to the Khoisan people of southern Africa add up to an all purpose, comfortable, and adventure-ready shoe.  Soft, breathable suede attached to a durable sole – previously rawhide or car tire rubber but now, soft and sticky yet durable crepe soles.

men's travel loafers

The Desert boot excels in all areas because it dresses up well with a casual touch but its DNA is all about walking long distances in hot climates, extreme durability, and comfort along the way.

Downsides of Clark’s Desert Boot: Note that the crepe sole (made of coagulated latex) provides great grip and comfort, they will get a bit dirtier over your travels than a normal sole and way a slight bit more than more techy shoes.  Accept those two items, and you have a great shoe for walking and wandering, especially in warmer climates.

Bottom Line: If you want a long lasting shoe that is foremost comfortable for walking but also dresses up well (enough), consider the Desert Boot.

Also Consider: The Vivobarefoot Gobi II which takes that classic desert boot design and updates it with the latest minimalist footwear tech.

ALTAMA OTB MARITIME

Durable, good looking sneakers that swim as well as they hike.

The  Altama OTB Maritime  delivers a classic canvas style shoe look, in an extremely durable sneaker package capable of hiking, running, and working out once broken in.

The result is a go anywhere, do anything shoes that looks just as good whether you’re in board shorts or Outlier slacks.  These shoes are some of the best travel shoes men planning for wet or dry adventure, like hiking, canyoning, and more, or casual outings, like rooftop cocktails or museums, could possibly take.

The uppers are made of 1000D Cordura Nylon and soles are made of rock climbing shoe rubber designed to maintain traction and wet and last through plenty of hikes. The look is muted yet timeless and classic allowing it to pair well with jeans, chinos, shorts, and more.

Best Locations to wear:  Everywhere.  Mountains, beaches, lakes, rivers, cities. The shoes are designed for military operations “Over the Beach” (hence the “ Altama OTB ” name) and in the water, so you can get them wet and they’ll dry quickly.

Strengths:  Looks great yet versatile (sporty vs. classy), extremely durable, designed for swimming in.

Altama OTB Maritime Review | A Brother Abroad | ABrotherAbroad.com

Weaknesses:  Durable materials take about 2 weeks to break in.  After that, these things are the perfect all-around travel shoe.

Performance:  Exceptional.  Performed well on 5 mile hikes, workouts, and walks through the city

SCARPA MOJITO (& MARGARITA)

A “mountain town” shoe with rock climbing and approach shoes in its DNA, designed by a trusted boot manufacturer.

The Scarpa Mojito - Best Travel Shoes for Men

A hiking ready casual shoe with a reputation for durability.  Inspired by rock climbing and approach shoes, the Scarpa Mojito performs very well on the trail and looks decent enough to wear around town.

The  Scarpa Mojitos  give my Lowa favorites stiff competition as these shoes (supposedly) perform nearly as well while being fairly compact and understated.

men's travel loafers

A “one bag traveler” with a hiking addiction mentioned these as his only hiking shoe for 3 years of travel, and he loved them.  Scarpa’s product reputation and the low top cut of these shoes make them absolutely worth a look for lightweight travel.

Best Uses and Locations:  Mountain adventures and treks everywhere.  GTX and waterproofing so there’s no climate or adventure these aren’t suited for.

Also Consider : The  Scarpa Margarita , another durable shoe from Scarpa with hiking DNA and a versatile look

The Scarpa Margarita - A great shoe option with hiking and rock climbing DNA

FORSAKE PHIL CHUKKA

A classic, casual looking that’s durable and geared for comfortable walking and hiking thanks to its hiking boot sole.

Durable, waterproof leather uppers and the DNA of a hiking boot in the Chukka’s sole combine to create a functional shoe with a classic, versatile style.  The resulting adventure and travel shoe will grab rocks, dirt, and tree trunks on the trail while keeping your feet comfortable yet still fit with classy jeans or chinos for a nice happy hour that evening.  If you

Forsake Phil Chukka - Best Travel Shoes for Men

In my search for  the best  travel gear (especially shoes) the Phil Chukka popped up several times.  Travelers and trekkers rave not only about the comfort and style but how well it handles all things from city to trail with grime, weather, abuse, and everything else you can think of in between.

Several wearers admitted to going months at a time wearing  only  the Phil Chukka with no complaints. This shoe is not only stylish and comfortable but also great for treks through the forests on weekends. The soles perform like hiking boots. The style would fit into a party later that night, still looking good.

That  is what we want from a good adventure-ready travel shoe.

STYLISH SHOES FOR MEN THAT TRAVEL

  • Sperry Top-Siders
  • Vivobarefoot Gobi II
  • Xero Ipari Hana
  • G.H. Bass & Co Monte Driver
  • Indosole Men’s Prahu

SPERRY TOP SIDERS

Timeless and stylish shoes for men that travel that look good and adventure well.  highly recommended in black.

The original Sperry Boat Shoe sole is designed with grooves in the sole that move with each step and maintain traction in wet and slippery conditions on boats, mimicking the paw of a puppy.

The all-leather outsole and heavy-duty rubber outsole mean these shoes will last much longer than you think and lend a casual “loafer” look that pairs well with shorts, jeans, or chinos for the nightlife after the adventure. For an even more versatile look, go for black.

The result is a shoe with a classic loafer look with the added function and durability of an aquatic, activewear shoe.  Hot and humid, wet or dry, this shoe will excel, ready for shorter hikes, beach days and light adventures.

In locations, like Southeast Asia, where shoes are commonly taken off before going indoors, boat shoes give you the “slip on, slip off” convenience with more function than a flip flop.

If you’re looking for a single travel shoe for Europe or any predominately urban adventure, the Sperry Top Sider Boat Shoe might be the travel shoe for you.

VIVOBAREFOOT GOBI II & RA II

The  Vivobarefoot Gobi II  and  Ra II  are the quintessential minimalist shoes in design and function, and great looking men’s travel shoes for “one bag packers”. The Oxford style low top and Desert boot style low boot cut round out two versatile, packable, and stylish boots.

men's travel loafers

Both shoes pack small easily and look good but are limited in how adventurous they can get.

If you’re citybound or just want a classy, packable shoe the Gobi II and Ra II are great options and particularly suited to the “One Bag” travel crowd.

men's travel loafers

Weaknesses of the Vivobarefoot Gobii II and Ra II:  As a single travel shoe, reviews have reported that the shoe’s threads may begin to breakdown at the 9-month mark, with heavy wearing.  Extremely minimalist sole increases ground feel and will take adjustment to walk on concrete for extended periods. Do note that these shoes do have an unusually wide toe box, so you’ll need to accept that.

I recommend pairing either Vivobarefoot choice with the  Xero Z-Trail  or to round out your minimalist footwear setup – one for active and adventurous times (the Z-trail) and days in the city, and the  Gobi II  or  Ra II chill times and nights out

The Vivobarefoot Gobi II shoes are some of the best travel shoes for men because they look amazing and pack small

XERO IPARI HANA

An understated and versatile, minimalist shoe, the  Xero Ipari Hana  is designed by the company that created my favorite running sandal.  The Hana is a minimalist and very packable travel shoe worth considering.

The Xero Ipari Hana are a contender as the Best Travel Shoes for Men

The  Xero Ipari Hana  shoe builds off of the  Xero Z-Trail  running sandal sole to create an enclosed shoe that is still packable and minimalist.  The look is understated.  The lacing system is simple.  The sole warranty is still 5,000 miles.  Beat that.

Weakness:  A cotton canvas upper means these shoes will take longer to dry and have less of a place for “one bag packing” that the Altama OTB Maritime – but this still puts them on par with the Vivobarefoot Gobi II and Ra II, with a little more casual look.

A fellow traveler who owned the Xero Ipari Hana shoes for a year reports them as being in great condition and “durable but dirty”, which means they will likely meet our standard for a reliable city shoe.  The Ipari Hana definitely isn’t suitable for running.  You may be able to make a quick getaway briefly, but don’t wear them to any bank robberies.  The Ipari would be suited for walking and any city activity but not heavy trekking

The  Iparai Hana  is available at  Xeroshoes.com  or

G.H. BASS & CO MONTE DRIVER

If you want a comfortable walking shoe that dresses up, it’s hard to do better than the Monte Driver.

men's travel loafers

A soft leather loafer with sewn moccasin-style construction and a rubber outsole designed for traction make this an excellent choice if you need to stay comfortable while on your feet with the opportunity to go a little more classy than casual.

Also Consider: The Mario Driver from Bass ** if you want the loafer look without the penny keeper.

men's travel loafers

INDOSOLE PRAHU

The Indosole Prahu** is a very solid, eco-friendly, and more budget-friendly alternative to your normal boat shoes while being more durable than the comfy Tom’s original shoes thanks to solid welting and a car tire outsole.  All for ~$60 (often $40 on discount).

men's travel loafers

A repurposed car tire sole is attached to a 100% canvas upper making for a shoe that’s both durable and machine washable.  As much as I love my Sperry Topsiders a major problem with going cockles for months at a time in the Southeast Asia heat is those shoes get fuuuuuuuunky , and washing/drying can be difficult.  Though the Prahu’s use simple canvas, which could be a downside, being able to throw them in the washer without fuss and dry in the sun balances things out, making these another great travel shoe.

men's travel loafers

The style is low key and absolutely casual but looks good enough for most occasions.

To boot, Indosole is a pretty awesome company that focuses on upcycling and recycling (car tires, plastic bottles, etc.), responsible manufacturing practices, and putting out good gear to boot (I love their basic Indosole ESSNTL Flip Flops and they’re currently my fave on the market).

Downsides: Canvas uppers aren’t the techiest or foot-friendly, but the breathability makes these good for hot, tropical climates.

Super comfy, lightweight (each pair clocks 12.28 oz / 384 g), compressible, and durable soles that’ll last more miles than you’re likely to walk.

HIKING BOOTS FOR TRAVEL

Hiking is an excellent addition to your travels, and even an excellent reason to travel.  If you intend to spend a solid of time on the trails, then be kind to your feet and be sure to pack a pair of trail-ready travel kicks.

The following hiking boots and shoes are the best travel-ready options that will stay comfortable on jagged trails, look good enough to do double duty in the city, and some even pack down enough to maintain the extra pair for pure, carry on travel.

  • Lowa Renegade GTX Low
  • Xero Denver
  • GORUCK MACV-1 Gen 2
  • Palladium Pampa
  • Timberland Earthkeepers

Possibly the most comfortable pair of shoes (or boots) I’ve ever worn, and the most packable too. Soft, supple leather with a fleece lined inner and an amazingly comfy sole that all compresses down into nothing.

The new Danner Jag includes upgrades from the last 30 years of shoe innovation (since the original shoe’s inception). 100% waterproof with a breathable mesh lining makes these ready for any weather and the robust build and durability that make Danner a legendary bootmaker.

The Danner Jags might not pack down easily into your bag, but the solid 80’s aesthetic, comfort, and trail performance might make them the only boot (or shoe) you need on your journey.

LOWA RENEGADE GTX LOW

The  lowa renegade gtx lo  is an overperforming hiking boot with an understated look that feels exceptional right out of the box.

men's travel loafers

When clean, these boots could pass for a chunky pair of trainers, especially when purchased in black.  This gives the Lowa Renegade GTX Low versatility in terms of look, and you can sneakily get away with wearing them at night – as long as you’re not pairing them with the kinds of skinny jeans that will make your kicks look like SUVs strapped to your feet.

In my search for the best travel shoe for men, the Lowa Renegade emerged as the best hiking shoe for me.

For 6 months I hiked at least once a week and often multiple times per week, and this was my boot of choice.  For the 8 days/72 miles of the Everest Trek and through the 3 days of the Inle Lake Trek in Myanmar I tried to beat down the Lowa Renegades, but to no avail.  I haven’t once had a blister, hotspot, or uncomfortable point in these shoes, and they have fit comfortably from the moment they came out of the box.

These may not be the best travel shoes for men, because of their bulky size but they are exceptional hiking boots.  The understated look is just a bonus.

Bottom Line on the Lowa Renegade GTX:  If you’re adventuring enough on your travels that dedicated hiking boots are a must, take the  Lowa Renegade GTX Lo  hiking shoes.

XERO DENVER

A weatherproof, minimalist boot perfect for lightweight, carry on only travel.

men's travel loafers

The Xero Denver is a minimalist boot following in the line of the minimalist Xero Z-Trails sandals, but with some trail-ready, “all-purpose shoe” upgrades.

The Xero Denver follows in the footsteps of the Lems Boulder Boot in function and style.

A more durable car tire sole, common to all Xero shoes, is the base of the Xero Denver, making way for miles and durability.

Fleece-lined inner and heat-reflective insoles make the shoes more comfortable and winter-ready – sole plan on buying new inserts to use these shoes year-round.

For travelers, the compressible, foldable, and packable nature of these light boots makes for easy packing and lightweight traveling.

Lastly, breathable, water-resistant canvas that performs well at repelling the wet rounds the Denver out as a great minimalist boot.

Bottom Line on the Xero Denver: A great pair of weather-resistant, all-terrain ready , and stylish boots that are suitable for lightweight, adventurous travel.

Also Consider: The just as lightweight, just as travel-friendly Xero Daylite Hiker , better suited to warmer climates, but just as many adventures

GORUCK MACV-1 GEN 2

Lightweight, durable, and stylish (if you like military-inspired design).

men's travel loafers

Extremely light and extremely comfy from the start, with an old school 1970’s style military “jungle boot” look.   The MACV-1  was designed to be a tough, ready for anything  rucking and hiking shoe – light and comfortable enough to walk in for miles and tough enough to stand up to abuse.  All of this adds up to another versatile travel shoe that packs down easily.

men's travel loafers

The smooth,  black MACV-1 boots  are great for those that can work the look of military-inspired look well.

If you prefer the classic tan “rough out” look of Timberland boots, the  MACV-1 in Coyote brown  could make a city suitable and adventure-ready shoe option.

In either case, these boots are an upgrade for travelers, in look and weight, from your average multi-colored hiking boot.

men's travel loafers

The latest evolution of the MACV-1, the “Gen-2” incorporates a deeper treaded sole for a lightweight boot for fast movement that still grabs well on any terrain

PALLADIUM PAMPA

Cheap, comfortable from the start, and stylish with “chuck taylor” cues.

men's travel loafers

If you’re on a budget and need an affordable yet fashionable boot (I mean…they’re French boots) that is comfortable enough to hike in, the  Palladium Pampa  and  Pampa Waterproof  may be perfect for you.

These Chuck Taylor’s styled hiking boots were initially worn by the elite French Foreign legion, meaning adventure is in their DNA.  An extremely comfy and soft rubber sole and canvas uppers make these a true “zero break-in period” shoe, meaning they’re comfortable and ready to hike in the second you put them on.  The old school canvas shoe look makes them versatile enough to stay stylish in most situations too.

TIMBERLAND EARTHKEEPERS

Sustainable, comfortable, durable, adventure-ready, and stylish.

men's travel loafers

The  Timberland Earthkeeper Originals  are an out-of-the-box comfortable pair of high top boots with a rugged look and ready to explore.  The Earthkeeper’s “anti-fatigue technology” makes them perfect if you want a shoe that will keep your feet fresh after miles and hours of walking and standing on city tours, waiting in line, or scrambling on trails.  And as long as there’s no suit and tie affair, these comfy boots will look good anywhere you go.

ATHLETIC SHOES FOR TRAVEL

For those that need a relaxing run or a solid Crossfit workout while traveling to stay grounded, its worth bringing a dedicated pair of athletic shoes, or at least a pair of travel shoes that double well as athletic shoes.  Additionally, a good pair of trainers can be the perfect shoe for walking and hiking through the city during travels.

The following shoes first and foremost high performing shoes and secondly look good enough to be worn outside of your run/gym without detracting from your travel.  Last, a select few pack down unnoticeably small, so you can add them to your existing luggage without overpacking or tipping the scales.

  • GORUCK I/O Trainers
  • New Balance Minimus
  • Merrel Trail Glove
  • Brooks Ghost 12
  • Vessi Waterproof Sneakers

GORUCK I/O TRAINER S

A tough, rucking boot inspired shoe designed for Crossfit style cross-training, and fast hiking with weight.  The GORUCK “Inside / Outside Trainers” take the hard use and lightweight focused base design of the “GORUCK MACV-1” and minimalist style military boots and roll them into an athletic shoe designed for hiking fast with heavyweight and high intensity activities like Crossfit and strength training.

men's travel loafers

The high-quality leather and abrasion-resistant/breathable 1000D Cordura nylon canvas uppers mold to your feet and deliver the same breathability and durability you get with the Altama OTB Maritime shoes, making for a shoe that molds to you and lasts through the adventures.  A wide toe box allows for natural foot movement and spread and allows space for natural foot swelling that takes place over a day of walking and hiking.

men's travel loafers

Vietnam era Jungle boot style speed lacing makes for a fit that is easy adapt to the bridge of your foot, while a 2” webbing reinforcement adds midfoot support and stability, while still keeping the shoe on the “minimalist” side.  A suede heel counter locks your heel in place, and combined with the speed lacing system, keeps your foot from sliding, avoiding blisters and staying comfortable.

Bottom Line on the GORUCK I/O Trainer: A tough, minimalist, military hiking boot design packed into the function, comfort, and aesthetic of an athletic shoe package.  If you want a low key shoe that will last for miles of walking, doubles for hours of training, and has a classic “tennis shoe” design, the I/O trainer is it.

NEW BALANCE MINIMUS TRAIL 10

Minimalist running shoes with a very comfortable sole and pack down small.

The extra cushy sole (for trail) gives just enough comfort on any terrain (off-road or on concrete) to be comfortable for long periods.  The lightweight mesh breathes and dries well.  The anti-microbial footbed can stand months (literally, I’ve tried it) off sweaty, sockless wear without smelling like death.  The midfoot wrap and flexible sole let the shoe hug your heel and midfoot while the subtly wider toe box allows for natural splay, all while preventing sliding and blisters/hotspots

men's travel loafers

To boot, the muted aesthetic makes these shoes wearable in most casual circumstances without any odd looks – especially if you opt for all black.

Best of all for travelers, these shoes collapse down nearly as well as the most minimalist shoes on this list (Xeros, Vivobarefoot), making them a great “extra shoe” option for runners and hikers and generally great for travel

Downsides of the New Balance Minimus: Because of the comfort and softness of the soles, I’ve never gotten more than a year out of my New Balance Minimus shoes when I’ve used them in hot climates (i.e., Afghanistan) or extremely rocky terrain.  I’ve ripped the soles off sprinting or doing Crossfit workouts, but that never happens before a year of wear.  However, the tradeoff of how comfortable my feet were during that year of use and how easy these shoes are to pack is a reason I still keep a pair.

Bottom Line on the New Balance Minimus: Highly recommended for runners and athletes considering bringing an extra pair of shoes for running during travel.  Just ensure you’re comfortable with minimalist (low heel drop) footwear before fully committing.

Click here to check out the wide variety of colors and styles available for the New Balance Minimus

MERREL TRAIL GLOVE

Another extraordinary piece of minimalist footwear, the Merrel Trail Glove has been another favorite of mine.

men's travel loafers

Originally intended to be a minimalist hiking boot/shoe but adapted over time as more of a trail running shoe, the Trail Glove delivers more durability that the New Balance Minimus (appropriate for rockier trails and harsher terrain) while giving the same foot-hugging, minimalist feel.

men's travel loafers

Whereas I’ve destroyed most of the shoes I’ve owned, busting stitches and literally ripping the tread off during workouts, the Merrel Trail Glove is the only athletic shoe I’ve down until the tread was bald…and nothing else was wrong.

I’ve gone on multi-day treks with this shoe and even ran a marathon in it (accidentally) and it performed well through it all.

Highly breathable and quick-drying uppers keep your foot comfortable and dry or at least drying quickly.  The heel cup and lacing system lock in your heel and midfoot well, while the room toe box allows for foot splay without looking awkward.  A durable, jagged trail-ready Vibram outsole tops of the package a solid, minimalist trail running shoe.

men's travel loafers

For travelers, the tiny size (when compressed) and low weight make it another easy option to pack as extra shoe dedicated to running and wandering trails.

Downsides: In exchange for durability, the Merrel Trail Glove does have a noticeably denser, and less soft, sole.  On the trail it won’t matter much, but running on concrete will take a slight adjustment and be slightly less comfortable than with the New Balance Minimus Trail 10.  However, if you’ll be on the road adventuring for an extended period (6+ months) and want a minimalist athletic shoe you know will last, this is your shoe.

Click here to see available colors and styles for the Merrel Trail Glove

BROOKS GHOST 12

When I canvased trail runners and ruckers for their favorite shoes all around, the Brooks Ghost came up continually…and then popped as a favorite with other travelers as well. Light, flexible, responsive, and with just enough cushioning to make a run (or walk) of any length unnoticeable to your feet.

men's travel loafers

Over 12 generations this shoe has adapted from a high performance running shoe, to a neutral cushioning do it all athletic shoe with some effective shoe tech in the soles.

The running shoe DNA will still serve you very well on those long transits through airports, walking tours, and impromptu hikes.

Bottom Line on the Brooks Ghost 12: If comfort running, walking, standing, and hiking is your primary concern, consider the uber cushioned (yet responsive) Brooks Ghost line for your travels.

VESSI WATERPROOF SNEAKERS

A 100% waterproof and breathable knit sock is layered on an antibacterial sole (for sockless wear) and a lightweight, grippy outsole make for a lightweight, waterproof, and comfy sneaker for exploring.

men's travel loafers

A fantastic alternative to the commonly suggested Allbirds, if you’re specifically looking for a versatile, comfortable, and practical sneaker for traveling through cityscapes, the Vessi Everyday Sneaker is a great option.

VIBRAM 5 FINGERS – KSO EVO

If you can get beyond the “unique” look of the Vibrams Five Fingers you can experience them for exactly what they’re meant to be – a do it all water-friendly shoe that keeps the wearer in touch with the ground.

men's travel loafers

The FiveFingers were originally designed by Vibram as a “deck shoe” meant for crew members on sailboats to wear on wet decks, allowing them to maintain traction and better feel on the decks of boats.  Since then, the FiveFingers grew into a monster taking on a new life as a “barefoot shoe”.  Though the craze of barefoot shoes and barefoot running has passed, the FiveFingers are still extremely useful.

If you plan to spend a lot of time adventuring in wet conditions – whether canyoning in Vietnam or island hopping in the Philippines – and don’t want to be bothered by taking shoes on and off or losing sandals, the FiveFingers are an excellent option.  Additionally, if you’re used to minimalist running, the FiveFingers make a solid running shoe.

Even better for travelers, the FiveFingers pack down to nearly nothing, as small as any other travel-friendly footwear I’ve seen (flip flops, Vivobarefoot shoes, Xero Z-Trails) making them a great extra shoe option for your travels.

These days, I even use my FiveFingers KSO EVO as a reef shoe while surfing – worn on those low tide days when I don’t feel like cutting my feet on the reef.

All in all, if you’re adventuring hard and plan to spend a lot of the time wet, and don’t mind the unique look, the Vibram Five Fingers are another excellent choice.

The FiveFingers line has tons of variants, such as insulated, neoprene (wetsuit material), etc.  However, I’ve found the mesh FiveFinger KSO EVO shoes to be perfect for everything from running, to surfing, to swimming (back to my board after wipeouts).  If you want an all-around performer, get the KSO EVO.

Downsides: Outside of the unique look (considered ugly to some) if you plan to run in these, make sure accustomed to running in minimalist footwear first, or look up a good beginner’s minimalist running plan to start.

The Bottom Line on the Vibram FiveFingers: An excellent activewear shoe for adventures, both wet and dry.  Give your body the time to adapt to minimalist running and you’ll have a true, do-everything shoe on your hands.

Bottom Line on the Vessi Everyday Sneaker for Water: Though this is a waterproof sneaker, its best for rainy weather, puddle hopping, and the occasional wetness that happens in citylife.  However if you’re on a live aboard cruise or soaking up beach life, we recommend the Sperry Topsiders , Altama OTB Maritime , or the Xero Z-Trails instead as they allow water to flow through drain ports and dry while wearing.

Also Consider: The Vessi Slip On sneaker, for an easier wearing, slipper styled

As boat shoes by design, water performance is in the DNA of these shoes, hence why they’re my favorite for Southeast Asian destinations like the Thai islands, Bali, and the Philippines.

A classic, versatile shoe that looks good, does well in water and warm climates of the tropics, but with a muted, classy look that is just as suited for Europe.  Originally intended as a boat shoe with a sole designed for traction on ship decks and easy draining design, this slip-on is perfect for beach life and tropical adventures.

XERO Z-TRAILS

Functional enough to run and hike yet minimalist enough to look good and pack small

The Xero Z-Trail - The Best Travel Sandals for Men

The Xero Z-Trail – A highly capable sandal designed for running, but ready for hiking, adventuring and even relaxing

After 6 months of adventure wear, I highly recommend the  Xero Z-Trails  as your go-to travel sandal.  The Xero Z-Trail minimalist running sandals fashioned after the footwear of a Mexican “running tribe” (the Tarahumara), meaning they’re rooted in travel and adventure as their purpose. The sandals are very packable, lightweight and minimalist and deliver amazing function, well worth the space in your pack.

The  Z-Trail  differs from other running sandals in that the front strap goes over the toes, instead of between them, holding the sole to your toes while running.  Also, the Z-Trail soles are designed with a 3 piece blend of car tire rubber for long life and durability and proprietary “Trail Foam” for health and comfort on rocky trails.  No other running sandals or minimalist adventure sandals incorporate a similarly well-engineered sole while staying minimalist.

men's travel loafers

When considering the best shoes for travel men  usually  jump straight to hiking shoes or boots. Though could be perfect for all trekking adventures, the choice can make your pack heavier and leave your feet sweaty in the hot, humidity of Southeast Asia. A perfect balance between no shoes and overdoing the footwear is an adventure-ready, minimalist sandal like the Xero-Trail. Durable, grippy, adventure-ready, lightweight, and comfortable.

The Z-Trail’s minimalist and lightweight design not only make packing easy but also helps the sandals to hug your feet enough for you to swim, run, and workout in them easily – that’s something the bulkiness of Tevas, Chaco’s, and other non-minimalist adventure sandals keep them from doing.

Best travel destinations for the Xero Z-trails:  In Southeast Asia, you could easily and comfortably wear the  Xero Z-Trails  and nothing else for your entire travel.  Southeast Asia, beaches, hot & humid climates, and everywhere else are perfect for the Xero Z-Trails or any other running focused minimalist sandal.  The Z-Trail excels in places like Asia where the weather is hot and most making your feet uncomfortable, but there are too many adventures for flip flops

Z-Trail Feel True Soles

Strengths:  Durability and a “5,000-mile warranty”, versatility (running, hiking, swimming), and minimalist design makes the Z-Trails look a lot better with casual attire than other adventure sandals,

Performance:  The Z-Trails was my only workout and running shoe for a year, and my go-to shoe for warm weather adventures, from hiking to riding

Other worthy Sandals:  Other great travel sandals for men include the  Luna Mono 2 ,  Luna Oso 2  and  Luna Origen 2 , or Bedrock brand and Shamma brand running sandals – all of which lace between the toes instead of over, Like the  Xero Z-Trails  and Z-Treks.  All 4 brands are highly reviewed by the minimalist sandal and running sandal crowds

Check out the latest Xero Z-trail  sandal styles, available on  Xeroshoes.com  or  Amazon.com .

INDOSOLES ESSNTLS FLIP FLOP

Indonesian born and produced by a fellow Californian, Indosoles were inspired by the Indo practice of taking old car tires, stripping the tread, and cutting them into sandals that last nearly forever.  The Indosoles founder and team recognized that upcycling flip flops from car tires is not only an eco-friendly practice but creates tough sandals with a fairly long life – and I love them.

men's travel loafers

The sole of Indosoles is made of reconstituted car tires with a hefty tread pattern that’s good enough for light hiking – if you’re used to hiking in flip flops.  The footbed is made of a softer rubber that’s durable but molds to the shape of your foot, hugging it more over time.

If you’re in the market for flip flops, I highly recommend the  Indosole ESSENTLS Flip Flops  as they look great, and are a great value for the money. Both the flip flops, and the slides if that’s your style

For the ladies looking for something a little different, the  Indosole ESSNTLS Slides  are solidly comfortable and just as great.

CHACOS Z-CLOUD

A hiking boot sole with an adventure sandal top.  Comfy. Grippy.

men's travel loafers

The  Chacos Z-Cloud  is essentially a hiking boot sole with straps attached to keep it sticking to your foot.  The result “sandal” gives the protection and comfort you need to explore any warmer weather terrain, wet or dry.

Chacos were designed by a rafting guide working in the Grand Canyon.  Today, they’re a hiking staple.  If you want your feet to be free and breathe while you hike, Chacos are a great option.

LUNA OSO AND LUNA MONO

Another hiking sandals option for those that like sandals “between the toes” instead of over.

men's travel loafers

The Luna sandal line, including the  Oso  and the  Mono , continues the design and function of barefoot hiking sandals that Xero does – except the Luna sandals lace between the toe (instead of over the top of the foot like  Xero sandals ).  Additionally, Luna’s different lines ( Oso  and  Mono ) differ in sole thickness (for comfort) and tread style (to perfectly match your chosen terrain), allowing you to pick the sandal that’s best suited for your pack, feet, and trails.

Initially designed for whitewater rafting guides, now perfect for adventures, wet or dry

Slightly lighter than the  Chacos Z-Cloud  but still just as adventure-ready, the  Teva Hurricane sandals  are another hike-ready set of footwear that keeps your feet free.

TRAVEL READY CLASSIC SHOES

Some designs never go out of style, and despite that these shoes are the most “techy”, they’re still good looking and functional enough to literally be your only shoe for travel, so don’t dismiss them

  • Vans C&L Era 59
  • Converse Chuck Taylors

VANS C&L ERA 59

These Vans Classics, the ERA 59s are generally a good investment for your wardrobe (especially if you don’t already have a canvas pair).  A versatile classic look means you can wear them anywhere from a bar in the Caribbean to a night out on the town with a suit (if you’re feeling bold).

men's travel loafers

They’re as comfortable and practical as any shoe you’ve worn but if we’re being honest, these shoes are about aesthetic versatility.  Pair them with a set of minimalist, activewear footwear (like the Xero Z-Trails or the New Balance Minimus Trail and you have yourself a good, onebag shoe setup for any occasion.

CONVERSE CHUCK TAYLORS

The GOAT – in my humble opinion.  They’re not the most beautiful.  They’re not the most durable.  They’re not the most high performing.  They’re not necessarily perfect for travel.  But they are awesome.  And they are classics.

During the first portion of my initial travels through Southeast Asia, through Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, I wore my Chucks to death .  After four months I had literally walked, hike, and motorbiked the soles out of them.  But I still love them, because they can do nearly anything, they can be worn with anything, and if you break them, you can replace them in any country for $40 new, or $10 for knockoffs.

Keep in mind that the traction isn’t the best under wet conditions, so I don’t recommend hiking too much in them, but these shoes are still fantastic classics.

If you’re strapped for cash and want a single shoe that you can wear through most adventures and won’t be too hard on your shoes, go classic and get the chucks.  Chucks are always a good choice.

BEST SHOE ACCESSORIES

So now that you have (hopefully) picked the perfect you for your travels, what next?

I recommend you consider the following extras to keep your feet happy and packing easy.

  • Foot Powder
  • Denture Cleaner Tablets

Nothing enhances how well a pair of shoes perform like a pair of wool socks.  The natural sweat-wicking effect keeps your feet drier even in the sweatiest conditions and the loftiness of wool (and comfort it creates) lasts miles longer than synthetic or cotton footwear.

Even more, wool is naturally antimicrobial, fighting bacteria growth and funk for longer between washes.  With a good pair of wool socks , or a good wool shirt , I’ve been able to go days between washes when I was in a pinch and moving too quickly to do laundry while traveling .

Check out this list of best wool socks for hiking and travel to find a short list of my favorite wool socks that I wear and recommend.

Having a dedicated bag to put your shoes in makes it a lot easier to pack, especially if you’re packing everything tightly.  And you don’t have to worry about getting the grime and nastiness of the ground and street on the rest of your luggage.

On the cheap end, even a large, heavy duty Ziploc bag will do – and I actually recommend always bringing a few.

Beyond this, REI stuff sacks are reasonably priced, and perfectly sized for a pair of shoes, and can be used as organizers for anything else in between.

I personally use my GORUCK Tough Compression Bag .  It straps easily to the bottom of any bag with webbing on the bottom (for sleeping bags) and is so tough its outlasted all of my other stuff sacks.  Works well as a shoe bag, dirty clothes bag, or impromptu grocery bag/beer holster.  Highly recommended.

FOOT POWDER (OR BODY POWDER)

If your feet naturally get pretty funky, be honest with yourself (mine definitely do) and pack a small, travel-sized bottle of foot powder. Good foot powder will keep your feet dry and comfy, and prevent the nasties from growing as quickly.  Additionally, on long periods without showering (red-eye flights or trekking in the backcountry) foot powder will keep you fresh longer.

I always carry a travel-sized bottle of Gold Bond foot powder or body powder as its highly effective and hasn’t failed me yet.  A plus of body powder over foot powder is you can use it on your armpits and other funky places to stay pseudo-fresh on extended dirt baggish travels.

As nasty as it sounds, that little bottle will extend the “fresh-scented” life of your socks and shoes by more time than you think.

DENTURE CLEANER TABLETS (TO QUICKLY CLEAN SHOES)

An unsung hero amongst dirt bags everywhere – denture cleaner tabs are the lazy man’s way of cleaning anything .  I started using denture cleaner tablets to get the old smells – beer, old orange juice – out of my Nalgene bottle, and it worked like a charm.

I branched out and now clean my shoes quickly with denture cleaner tablets.  Simply put them in a sink or bucket, drop a tablet into each shoe, then fill the shoes and bucket with water and wait for 30 minutes.  The antibacterial properties of the tabs kill everything in your shoe that makes it smell funky, and you’re quickly back to new.

The 6 Best Loafers for Men in 2023

Published on May 24, 2021 by Karlton Miko Tyack · Shoes May contain affiliate links ( what's this? )

Looking for a pair of loafers to add to your shoe collection? Here are the best loafers you can buy right now.

Best Loafers for Men Hero Image

Like a classic sport watch, a good pair of loafers is one of the easiest ways to elevate both casual and smart looks . In fact, the swift slip-on action of broken-in loafers probably make them the easiest of all, certainly the quickest.

Brown leather loafers details

Loafers are one of those men’s quintessentials that actually speed up the process of getting dressed. Imagine if clip-on ties were acceptable. Unlike clip-ons though, these leveled-up moccasins always make you look like a put-together, well-adjusted adult.

There’s a style for every type of guy and every type of occasion, from simple American penny loafers to sleek Italian horsebits .

Short on time? Here are our top three picks for the best men’s loafers you can buy right now:

Jay Butler Cromwell Penny Loafer

This penny loafer is built with the slick attention-to-detail as a centuries-old Italian shoemaker, but the design template is traditionally American.

G.H. Bass Larson Weejuns loafer

A best-seller after all these decades, the archetypal loafer features moc stitching and the original beefroll-style stitch on the penny keeper.

M.Gemi Volo Due Loafer

Hand-made and hand burnished in Toscana, the Volo Due is M.Gemi’s original leather loafer.

Read on for more info and the complete list…

The 6 Best Men’s Loafers

Each of these brands has distinct offerings at a range of price points.

Jay Butler Cromwell

Jay Butler was founded as recently as 2014, but you’d swear they’ve been in the loafer game for decades. Their Millbank Bit Loafer is the go-to alternative to Guccis among the discerning set, and their brown Cromwell Penny Loafer has become an instant classic.

Jay Butler Cromwell Penny Loafers Brown

Their penny loafer is built with the slick attention-to-detail as a centuries-old Italian shoemaker, but their design template is traditionally American.

The full leather soles are thin and pliable, the heels are of moderate height (shorter than a European dress loafer, more pronounced than a boat shoe), and there’s significant top-foot exposure.

This unique combination makes Jay Butlers exceedingly versatile. You can wear their loafers with a suit or with relaxed jeans. Since they’re a fraction of the price of loafers from an Italian heritage brand, you can fearlessly use them as an everyday shoe.

The loafer uppers are hand-sewn full-grain cow leather. They’re built by cordwainers in Leon, Mexico who have specialized in moccasin-making for generations. The word “artisan” gets thrown around a lot these days, but Jay Butlers actually fit the bill.

I know a lot of shoe buffs are understandably loyal to the Goodyear welt, but the Blake stitching in Jay Butler penny loafers are characteristically close cut, which makes these easy to break in.

Idrese Andre

Idrese is a direct-to-consumer brand that flexes their creative muscle to sell high-quality shoes at mid-tier prices. The founders visited over 30 different independent European workshops looking for the best price-to-quality ratio.

Idresse Andre Loafer Honey

Their Andre Loafer features the iconic metal hardware of a conventional European horsebit, but is even smoother and more aerodynamic. The uppers are soft full-grain Italian and the outsole has a stacked heel, way more formal than you’ll find in a penny loafer.

This fashion-forward riff pairs well with bold suits and fitted jeans. They’d actually look pretty handsome with slim khakis too, if you opt for the honey version which boasts an eye-catching golden tan hue.

The 360 degree Goodyear welt ensures you can keep these uppers for as long as cobblers are willing to resole them. These loafers are built in the same Spanish workshop that bigger brands, like Louis Vuitton and Ferragamo, also employ.

Another cool option with Idrese is their 3D custom platform, so you can build in your own custom features including width, and material.

M.Gemi Volo Due

Founded by veteran shoe professionals, M.Gemi sought to bring Italian craftsmanship to the mid-market by cutting the middlemen. Specifically, they focused on the traditions of Marche, Italy, which is known for time-honored leather crafts.

M.Gemi Volo Due Loafer

Hand-made and hand burnished in Toscana, the Volo Due is M.Gemi’s original leather loafer. It features a traditional style lip that covers most of the foot, for a long, dapper silhouette.

Details like the classic full saddle across the top and into the sides, as well as the protruding backstitch, give the shoe dimension and character. For a fun throwback, the Volo even has a hand-stitched penny keeper.

If you own a tweed suit, enjoy wearing suit separates casually, or prefer warmer tones overall, the Volo Due is the loafer for you. M.Gemi’s black Filare loafer is a simpler shoe inspired by the penny loafer, but elevated with details like the bow saddle.

Meanwhile their Sacca loafer is the swingin’ swanky option, with a suede construction and multiple bright colors options.

M.Gemi shoes are made with a Blake stitched construction and a notable depth of color thanks to that italian burnishing.

Wolf & Shepherd Monaco

Founded in 2014, Wolf & Shepherd is known for infusing dress shoes with athletic footwear technology for better comfort. Justin Schneider, a performance shoe designer, started the Los Angeles-based company after several years of research and experimentation.

Wolf Shepherd Monaco Loafer

If comfort is the most important thing in a loafer to you, then the luxurious Wolf & Shepherd Monaco is your guy.

It’s unlined for softness, but the leather-lined footbed features their FloatFoam, a proprietary memory foam blend designed for reactive cushioning.

The upper is water-repellent suede for a relaxed but sophisticated look that’s far less fragile than regular suede. Other details include side stitching details and a foldable heel counter.

Unlike most suede shoes, you can wear these as an everyday city shoe thanks to the combination of performance comfort and protected suede. It has an effortless man-of-leisure aesthetic, perfect for sockless days or those days when your suit is feeling a little too stuffy.

Beckett Simonon Bernard

Beckett Simonon is efficiently high-value because they produce small-batch runs based on customer orders. This means that it may take up to two months to receive your order, but you can rest assured that you’re getting premium full-grain leather built with ethical labor, and that all inventory gets used.

They’ve got some of the best loafers in their price bracket. Their popular Lamberts feature a distinctly higher profile than regular loafers, and their Beaumonts infuse the original horsebit design with the more relaxed sides of a penny loafer.

A standout design is Becket Simonon’s Bernard shoes . It takes an unconventionally contemporary approach to the traditional tassel loafer.

Beckett Simonon Bernard Tassel Loafers Black

Often considered a musty old style that’s worn with a school uniform, the Bernard Tassel Loafers boast the sleek, clean lines of an Italian sports car. It’s tidy and monochromatic, with a belt stitch around the collar, and a boosted stitch around the vamp that stops before it hits the edge of the shoe.

Over time, this loafer will develop exquisite patina. And since the leather is so durably high-quality, you can easily buff out marks and scuffs using leather conditioners.

Beckett Simonon was also founded with a focus on sustainability, which includes mindful sourcing and ethical manufacturing. Given the affordable prices and high standards, these loafers are worth their long wait time.

G.H. Bass Larson Weejuns

G.H. Bass is the original American loafer brand. They’ve been around since 1876, and introduced the first slip-ons as we know them in 1936. The moniker “penny loafer” comes from stories of boys keeping a penny in the shoe slot of their Bass shoes.

G.H. Bass Larson Natural Sole Weejuns Loafers

This heritage brand still offers the original Larson Weejuns loafer from the 30s. “Weejuns” is a cheeky hypocorism for “Norwegian,” in honor of the loafer’s lineage.

A best-seller after all these decades, the archetypal loafer features moc stitching and the original beefroll-style stitch on the penny keeper. It’s unlined and is built with genuine leather throughout.

Opt for Larson Weejuns as an effective budget option, or out of reverence to the brand that launched a shoe movement.

The Larson Weejuns may be too textbook for some guys. However, it’s this understated and classic quality that makes them so easy to wear. They aren’t too formal for ripped jeans, and they can easily be the quiet handsome partner to a snazzy bowtie.

Basically, if you’re short on time or money, the Larson Weejuns are a highly-esteemed yet accessible option, approved by Steve McQueen, JFK, and Paul Newman.

The Amberjack Loafer looks perfectly natural, in its element, let’s say, in smart casual situations.

It’s a minimal design that combines the relaxed aesthetic of a boat shoe (but way more sophisticated) and the structure of a traditional loafer. Meanwhile, the buttery suede looks and feels luxurious, adding a touch of moccasin earthiness.

Amberjack Loafer Chestnut

It’s basically a combination of best practices, allowing you to incorporate it into any personal style. It looks great with shorts too.

On top of that, this shoe wins the award for most comfortable. The innovative outsole design (read more about it in our brand review ) accommodates your foot and stride. Reach for these guys on days you have to stand or walk for long periods of time.

Conclusion

Loafers are a real life hack.

The reason they’re such a staple is because they check all the boxes: comfortable, stylish, and most importantly, easy. Depending on which brand you go for, they can check the affordable box too.

Rarely does the phrase “you can’t go wrong” actually apply literally. Fortunately, it does for loafers.

Hi Brock, I really like the navy computer bag shown in the photo above with the brown loafers. Can you please provide information about the brand and where you can find it, thanks.

I loved that bag! It’s a really old one from some brand I found on Amazon that doesn’t exist anymore. It was a great bag while it lasted, but unfortunately not the most durable. I haven’t really found another one like it yet.

In Review: Astorflex Patnoflex Travel Loafer

June 13, 2023 By Adam T | | Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission, which helps keep the lights on around here. We also take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Astorflex Patnoflex Travel Loafer – $198

About the Author: Adam Terry is a thirtysomething salesman in the heating and manufacturing industry. He enjoys bourbon, boots, sneakers, denim, and working on his dad bod father figure.

Today we’re taking a look at the Astorflex Patnoflex travel loafer from Huckberry. For guys that travel frequently, you know how dull and time consuming the airport security checks can be. If you do it often enough (and haven’t invested in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry), choosing your shoes is a real decision you have to think through before you leave the house. Should I wear some sneakers, boat mocs, slippers, mules, or loafers? Do any of these have a metal shank that will set off the machine? Will the gate agents judge me for my tie-dye Crocs?

Even if you’re not a frequent flier, maybe you’re looking for something new to spice up your shoe rotation this Summer. Astorflex, the relatively well known brand that’s been in business for well over a hundred years, may have something for you. They’re frequently listed here on Dappered as great options for those of us on a budget yet still quality-focused, as their styles are typically made in Italy, affordable, stylish, and above all else, comfortable. They also focus on environmentally responsible construction, which is something I think we can all get behind. Maybe now you’re in the market for a lightweight, flexible, and comfortable travel loafer and these might be it.

The Patnoflex Travel Loafer comes in four colors: “militare” suede (which is lighter in person than on Huckberry) stone suede , tan leather , and dark chestnut nubuck .

The Adam Review Scale of Excellence  (A.R.S.E.)

  • 5 – Excellent! No issues and highly recommended.
  • 4 – Good. Above average, but not perfect.
  • 3 – Average. Minor issues, might be good at the right price.
  • 2 – Fair. Below average due to defects, flaws, or imperfections.
  • 1 – Poor. Significant issues, not worth purchasing at any price.
  • Brand: Astorflex
  • Style: Casual, Venetian-style loafer
  • Size: 43 EU, 10 US
  • Construction: Stitchdown
  • Upper: Roughout suede
  • Sole: Vegetable tanned leather with rubber heel toplift
  • Details: Vegetable tanned leather insoles (removable)
  • Extras: N/A
  • Country of Origin: Italy
  • Price: $198 USD through Huckberry

Astorflex Patnoflex Travel Loafer

Not Boat mocs. Italian sports cars for your feet.

Ordering/Delivery/Returns

My pair of Patnoflex Travel loafers were ordered through Huckberry on a Monday afternoon. They shipped out the next day via UPS Next Day Air Saver and arrived on Wednesday morning. That’s crazy fast, regardless of where your office or warehouse is located (they’re in Ohio).

FYI: Huckberry offers free returns on most orders within the U.S. within 30 days of delivery. Like most other retailers, all goods must be in like new/resellable condition and shoes must be completely clean with no signs of wear (creases, sole wear, etc.). Final sale items are excluded.

Score: 5/5 Stars – Easy online ordering, lightning fast shipping, and simple return policy.

Astorflex Patnoflex Travel Loafer

Soft, supple, and buttery smooth suede.

Packaging/Unboxing

This pair arrived in a simple Astorflex shoe box. Inside, the pair was wrapped in a single layer of brown, recycled construction paper and each shoe arrived stuffed with tissue paper. They were kind enough to include a combination brochure and care booklet, as well as a single fabric shoe bag that is large enough to pack both loafers in. Since loafers don’t need shoelaces, we have no major complaints here.

Score: 5/5 Stars – Unboxing was solid, no issues or complaints.

First Impressions

Fresh out of the box, you’ll be amazed at just how light these travel loafers are. These are much lighter than any other loafers or boat mocs that I’ve tried in the past. The “rough out” suede upper is buttery smooth, incredibly supple, and feels great on foot, thanks in part to the top grain of the hide being the lining that you normally feel inside a shoe. This color of suede is called militare as it straddles the line between a medium, chestnut brown and an olive green. Suede is famously difficult to photograph, as it seems to change color under various lighting conditions, but these do honestly look lighter in person than how they appear on the Huckberry website.

men's travel loafers

“ Messi-ing about ” in Miami (or somewhere similar) this summer? These loafers will be much comfier than lacing up a pair of football boots for the local team .

Thankfully, this shade is incredibly versatile and will pair well with most other Earth toned shades. Examples include olive green linen shirts, brown leather belts, khaki chino shorts, and tortoise frame sunglasses. Style wise, these lightweight and minimalist loafers are best worn in a variety of “smart casual” outfits where you’re dressing up your casual wear items for a slightly more formal and nicer look. While I wouldn’t personally pair these loafers with a casual suit, as they’re a bit too informal and not structured enough for my taste, I could definitely see them getting some heavy use on casual Fridays at the office when I throw on a polo and crisp jeans.

Astorflex Patnoflex Travel Loafer

Slick leather soles, but this loafer comes equipped with a honeycomb-like rubber heel topper to act as a braking system.

Design wise, the Patnoflex travel loafers are closer to a Venetian loafer than a boat moc. The plain toe vamps have no penny slots, tassels, or other embellishments, which helps to tone down their look and make them a bit more casual for your weekend and travel needs. Construction wise, the stitching is neat and tidy throughout and all of the panels on this pair seem to match in texture. My one annoyance is with the heel tab out back. It’s too small to actually be useful (you can’t fit a finger in there) and it keeps catching the hem of my jeans as I walk around the house. Granted, I feel like a lot of guys would wear these with shorts anyways.

Astorflex Patnoflex Travel Loafer

Super simple and smart looks, but some won’t see the heel tab as brilliant. It’s too small to fit a finger in, and it kept catching on the hem of my jeans. (YMMV depending on trouser length, weight, fabric, etc.)

Peering inside, you’ll find a removable leather insole insert that’s backed with a small layer of neon orange comfort foam . Underneath, you’ll see a denser layer of grey cushioning that’s glued and nailed to the leather outsole. As I mentioned earlier, these shoes are incredibly lightweight and very simple, which helps keep them flexible. The rough out suede upper is flared out and stitched down to this leather outsole, hence the term stitchdown construction. This outsole is a single, THICK slab of vegetable tanned leather. The outsole is essentially the frame of the shoe as everything else is either stitched or glued to it, so it must be robust. Yet, it also needs to be flexible enough to be comfortable. No one wants to wear shoes with MDF boards glued to the bottom, do they? So, the lightweight construction helps keep everything flexible. Note that this particular pair has leather soles that are thicker than most other leather soles I’ve seen, including the ones on my Alden Leisure Handsewn loafers. Incredible. Also, it’s important to note that these leather soles are slippery for the first wear – like a greased piglet on the deck of the USS Kennedy. Thankfully, Astorflex has factored this into the design and built a leather heel stack with a honeycomb-like rubber heel topper to act as a braking system.

Score: 4/5 Stars – Lightweight, simple, but surprisingly comfortable. Annoying heel tab.

Sizing/Fit/Comfort

In terms of fit and sizing, I recommend trying your true-to-size Brannock measurement. Note that Astorflex does not offer half sizes, so if you’re in between sizes, I recommend sizing down. I tried this pair in 43 EU (10 US) and without socks, which is how I would probably wear them, they fit very well. These loafers do start out feeling quite snug, but as they’re essentially unlined, the leather uppers will stretch to accommodate your feet in time. Note that if you plan to wear these with socks or prefer a looser fit, you may want to size up.

Astorflex Patnoflex Travel Loafer

Flexible like a slipper, and might just be as comfortable as one too.

For size reference, I am a 10.5 D/E on a Brannock device and usually take a 10 D in most roomy dress shoes, including Alden’s Barrie last and Grant Stone’s Leo last. I take a 10.5 E in Allen Edmonds 65 last, as that last runs too narrow for me. I also take a 10.5 in Converse/Vans and an 11 in most athletic sneakers from Adidas or Nike. Have a size question? Email us!

Comfort is always subjective, but I find these to be incredibly comfortable. The lightweight, unlined leather uppers are soft and supple and feel amazing on foot. The removable vegetable tanned leather insoles are backed with a bit of foam for some shock absorption, and provide just the right amount of support and cushioning on top of the leather outsoles. Make no mistake, these are minimalist loafers that are designed to be lightweight and flexible. I could definitely see taking these on a trip to the coast or a weekend jaunt to the mountains, but taking these as your only pair of shoes for a week at Disney World would be sadistic torture.

Score: 4/5 Stars – Docking a star for Astorflex choosing to make these only in whole sizes, but overall fit and comfort is fine.

Final Thoughts

Wrapping things up, I was honestly surprised at just how comfortable and versatile these Astorflex Patnoflex travel loafers are. The leather is soft and supple, the insole is comfortable out of the box, and the mid-brown color pairs well with a ton of clothing options. For me, I find these to be more stylish than camp mocs and more presentable than slip-on sneakers. While this aesthetic may not be for everyone, if you’re looking for a lightweight and comfortable pair of shoes to pair with your “smart casual” Summer wear, I can certainly recommend these. Cheers!

Avg. Score: 4.5/5 – Definitely recommended – cooler than camp mocs, better than Sperrys.

Our favorite luggage brands make it easy to elevate your travel style . If you need help narrowing down your choices, we have our 25 favorites that our editors have tested and reviewed. Out with the old, in with a new travel bag.

When it comes to quick trips that last a day or two, a duffel is what you need. And Herschel’s Novel bag is, in so many words, the best bang for your buck. Not only is it incredibly durable and spacious enough for several fits (there’s also a separate compartment for your shoes), but it’s also less than $100. That’s what we call a win-win.

Drawing its inspiration from origami, Longchamp’s convertible travel bag is one of the most versatile out there. Wear it as a backpack or carry it around as a weekender, this bag is going to get you from point A to point B with ease. It’s sporty and practical and effortlessly in fashion.

From Karl Lagerfeld to David Fincher to Martha Stewart, all the high rollers can be seen toting this suitcase. It’s got distinctive grooves and an ergonomic design, and it just screams class. Plus, the TSA-approved locks are keeping your belongings extra secure.

It’s also Esquire approved and worthy of an investment.

For train travel, bus voyages ( ooof, we feel your pain ), or even a trip involving a connecting flight, there’s nothing like a good backpack to keep you hands-free and moving at a quick pace. Made of water-resistant nylon, Away’s backpack is a durable choice with padded shoulder straps and a laptop pocket.

Surprisingly lightweight, Métier’s duffel is a luxe option for frequent travelers. It’s thoughtfully designed with specific places for toiletries, sunglasses, a laptop, and the rest of your valuables. A secret card slot in the exterior pocket makes for easier travel at the airport.

In the luggage realm, there are very few that hold a candle to Samsonite. For more than a century (yes, that long), the brand has been churning out travel accessories, always offering quality styles for the day. It doesn’t get bogged down by its history. This soft-shell spinner, for example, features wireless charging pockets and a compartment for toiletries, and it’s made of 100 percent ballistic nylon. It’s also less than $250, which makes is a virtual steal.

Business executives know the importance of a garment bag. When you just hopped off the plane and are running late to that meeting, never stress trying to find a steamer again. TUMI is saving you from wrinkle embarrassment, keeping you put together everywhere and anytime.

We love our garment bags in duffel form. They are practical for traveling with suits or other formal clothes, but you can also use them for quick casual trips. Need more convincing? Check out our endorsement of this one.

In a flexible neoprene, Dagne Dover's carryall is one of the lightest duffels out there. It's got a laptop sleeve, and it also comes with a shoe bag and a dust bag. It also makes for a great gym bag, if you want something that's multipurpose.

We love this duffel so much, it was even one of the travel products our editors can't live without . Converting from a garment sleeve to a duffel bag, its versatility meets a luxurious style for a bag you will have for decades.

July Carry All Weekender Plus

Carry All Weekender Plus

Much like it's name denotes, this truly is a carry-all at its 50L capacity. A large padded pocket fits your laptop, and hidden pockets with magnetic closures keep your smaller belongings tucked away safely. If you are going somewhere for the long-haul, it also easily attaches onto your luggage.

Paravel Aviator Grand Suitcase

Aviator Grand Suitcase

Paravel is new-ish to the luggage game, but in just a short time it is succeeding in the competitive market by focusing entirely on sustainability. The brand's collection is not only beautifully designed, but they are also made of recycled plastic water bottles. It also plants trees through Eden Reforestation Projects to offset the carbon emissions it produces via shipping.

Meisterstück Meisterstück Document Case

Meisterstück Document Case

From the finest writing instruments to regal timepieces, Montblanc offers the kind of items beloved by jet-setters, C-suite executives, and anyone else of that sort. Naturally, this means that its briefcase is one of the best around, and will surely induce envy from the rest of the folks in first class.

Zero Halliburton Large Travel Case

Large Travel Case

When it comes to luxury, you can't ignore Zero Halliburton. This label is, after all, the maker of the iconic damage-resistant aluminum briefcases, so rest assured that its large spinner will stay looking good while its be tossed and turned from the check-in booth to baggage claim.

Victorinox Spectra 3.0 Frequent Flyer Carry-On

Spectra 3.0 Frequent Flyer Carry-On

This Swiss brand makes luggage that lasts. Constructed in a high performance recycled polycarbonate, this suitcase is durable and eco-conscious. It expands by 20 percent and has multiple compartments for smart storage. We also love this piece from Victorinox because you can personalize it for no added cost.

Coofay Travel Backpack

Now you can pack for a weekend trip in a backpack. There's a laptop compartment, separate shoe storage, and a USB charging port. Travel compactly and with rest assured that everything you need it right on your back.

Lululemon Command the Day Duffel Bag

Command the Day Duffel Bag

Aptly named, this bag is going to be your 24/7 savior. A water-repellent fabric protects against spills and weather. You can stay organized with the allocated pockets for shoes, laptop, and gear.

Yeti Crossroads Duffel Bag

Crossroads Duffel Bag

You know Yeti for its coolers and bottles, but you're about to love it for its luggage. A water and abrasion-resistant exterior coupled with reinforced stitching makes this one of the most durable duffels on the market.

Mark & Graham 2-in-1 Garment Bag

2-in-1 Garment Bag

This bag is literally a transformer. Going from garment bag to duffel, it helps to protect your clothing with its folding design. The smart silhouette even leaves room for two pairs of shoes to store at the side.

Mack Weldon Atlas Duffle

Atlas Duffle

This reinforced canvas duffle will pass any test you put it through—from the gym to the plane. It has multiple pockets, one that's designated for shoes and the other for drinks and snacks ( remember to throw those out before you get to TSA ), and a slip-resistant bottom.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
