The company is the perfect combination of relaxed yet professional. We spoke several times prior to our tour. Our original date had to be changed twice, once for weather and the other time due to high bacteria in the water. It was very easy to switch dates. We met at the store, loaded kayaks, gear, dry bag into our own vehicles and drove to a park to launch. Our guide was truly excited about Popoia Is and wanted to share his knowledge. (We arrived before a group and left way after) He made everything about this tour fun and we learned so much about the area! He even stopped at a store to buy a local food item that we talked about just so we could try it. Kayaking with Sun & Salt was so much better than just renting kayaks on our own! More details about our experience below- We had a booking with them for guided kayak on May 5th. They (Derek?) messaged on the morning (around 7:15a) that the weather is not good enough for kayaking so they suggested doing this on another day. We confirmed on the call and message that we will instead do this activity on May 8th since as per Derek, it was the perfect day for kayaking. Ok, now onto May 8th. We arrived at their location on time 8:15a. This place was like 50 mins drive from our hotel in Waikiki. The OFFICE WAS CLOSED. No one picked up the phone nor did they reply to out messages till this day. There was another asian couple waiting as well and based on our discussion, they had a similar experience as ours. But the guys were so nice and friendly and hooked us up with some snorkeling/beach gear that we took to a nearby beach and we had such a fun time. • lagW9349GJ 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Go somewhere else We reserved a kayak for the day, the handle wasn't hooked on the kayak correctly and broke off so my first 30 minutes was spent fixing/rigging it so we could carry it to the beach. We get it to the beach and discover one of the seats only had 3 clips. It looked like someone had tied it to try to get it to work. We rigged it and went on the water for a couple of hours. It proved to be to uncomfortable with the seat missing the clip. We decided to take it back and one of the straps broke. We called the phone number for the place because we were afraid to drive it back on top of the car with one strap. We were told someone would call us in a few minutes. No one did and we ended up driving it back with one strap holding it to the car. The guy working definitely should not be in any customer service job. I later saw other bad reviews about him and I can see why. The website said there would be some kind of instruction on ocean kayaking but there was nothing to like that. Just loaded up faulty equipment sign a waiver and send you on your way. We exchanged the kayak for beach equipment because we didn't want to deal with another kayak. When we returned the equipment we again had a hard time getting him to pay attention to us and we forgot a life jacket in the trunk. When we made the return trip to bring that back we never could find him. There was another car trying to return things and we all just left our stuff after not being able to find anyone there. Sure you could just rent a kayak and paddle out yourself, but I think doing so without proper knowledge could deprive you of some great background on the area and potentially put you in a position to do some damage and/or disturb the wildlife. Our guide (Jared) was super knowledgeable and a lot of fun to hang out with during our full-day excursion. They tell you exactly how to safely transport the gear (without damaging your rental car regardless of you having a roof rack - they provide foam pads and ties) from their shop to the beach and best location to park. Paddling out to the Mokes in a guided tour was very easy going and not strenuous at all, plus we got to see some turtles going to and back! Once on the Mokes, we were given a tour around the island, saw a hawaiian monk seal, and went as far around the island as permissible given the size of the waves. After that we, enjoyed some kalua pork burritos on the beach before paddling back. Jared was super friendly and even went to the liberty of taking photos of us kayaking and taking a dip in the salt pool on the island. We rented a kayak, paddled out to the mokulua islands off of Lanikai, saw 3 turtles, and enjoyed lunch on the beach looking at one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen. The paddling out to flat island was difficult. The tour was VERY disorganized. We were scheduled for the 2.5 hr tour but when we got there they didn't have a guide at first that could take us out and instead offered us the 5 hr which we didn't want. Then, they don't tell you that you have to carry the very heavy kayaks to the insertion point. Then when we got back, we were told we would have to wait for the 5 hr tour to complete to get a ride back to Waikiki. Thankfully our nice tour guide, Iliana (?) took us in her own private vehicle.
