What You Need to Know About Cruises in Bad Weather, According to an Expert

From rough seas to hurricane season, here's how to handle cruising during a storm.

Weather can be unpredictable. And when you plan your cruise vacation months — and sometimes even more than a year — in advance, it’s impossible to anticipate.

Cruises are often planned well in advance of the actual trip and, unfortunately, sometimes even the best plans are thwarted. That’s what happened when a group of passengers on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship staged a protest in 2019 after bad weather forced them to miss several ports on their European voyage.

The cruise on Norwegian Spirit (with a capacity of just over 2,000 guests) left from Southampton, England, and planned to make stops in the Netherlands, Norway, and Iceland — none of which they reached. A spokeswoman for the cruise line told The New York Times that “severe weather conditions” caused the itinerary changes and that the cruise line offered passengers 25 percent off the cost of a future cruise. However, passengers complaining about other issues like clogged toilets staged a protest, demanding a refund.

While weather is as uncertain as playing the lottery, changing an itinerary is a calculated decision, Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , told Travel + Leisure.

“[For] cruise lines, their No. 1 priority is going to be guest safety,” McDaniel said. “It is not just the decision of the onboard crew… it’s a team who makes that decision based on the latest weather patterns, based on the options or other alternatives.”

And while it is no doubt very frustrating if you’re forced to miss several planned stops, McDaniel said that cruise lines are often under no obligation to offer a refund.

“When itineraries change, they’re pretty well protected by the contract that every person on board their ships signs,” she said, adding that any refund offered is “actually above and beyond what they’re legally required to do. For some passengers that doesn’t sound great, but they are covered by that contract.”

So what can you do if you’ve packed your bags, booked your flights, and updated your out-of-office message for your dream cruise and the weather decides to rain on your plans? Cruises in storms are never ideal, but here's how to plan ahead and make the most of your trip.

Be aware of what is going on at all times.

McDaniel said it’s important to listen to announcements and be very clear with the situation on board. It’s imperative that you get the most up-to-date information from the staff who know it best and don’t rely on rumors or hearsay.

Though your itinerary may change, cruises are rarely canceled due to storms. Ships are designed to handle rough seas and can be rerouted to avoid danger. Once you're on board, any port updates will be announced over the ship’s intercom or detailed in a notice delivered to your stateroom.

Use a travel agent.

McDaniel said that using a travel agent to book your trip could save you a headache in the end.

“This person becomes your travel advocate,” she said. “They're someone who has relationships with the cruise line — when something goes wrong, they can be your advocate.”

While cruise ships aren't obligated to offer refunds, you'll often get a small reimbursement for missed ports.

Stay organized.

If you are offered any kind of compensation, McDaniel recommends writing down all the information.

“Get people's names and write down what the compensation was,” she said, adding you also have to be patient: “Be aware that there are countless cruise ships out in port at any time and so it might take some time to hear back."

Prevent seasickness.

Cruising in bad weather can lead to seasickness, so you'll want to take immediate steps to ensure you won't be confined to your cabin with a stomach ache. Some options include taking an over-the-counter medication like Dramamine or Bonine, using an acupressure wristband, or applying a patch like Transderm Scop before you step on board.

Plan alternative activities.

Though some excursions like helicopter rides or kayaking tours might be scrapped, you may still be able to go shopping, visit a museum, or go on a bus tour. Your cruise line will likely refund you for any excursions you booked through them, while private tour operators usually issue refunds upon request.

Since outdoor activities on board, such as pools and rock climbing walls, might be unavailable, your best bet is to find something to do indoors. The ship will usually offer additional programming, so pay attention to announcements and do your best to get into the spa, evening entertainment, or specialty restaurants, since these will be more in demand.

Know that you can leave.

If you’re not enjoying the cruise or not doing what you hoped to, you can leave the ship early as a last resort.

“Ultimately, if you feel like you're not getting the cruise you want, you can leave,” McDaniel said, “but it’s going to be on you.”

Caribbean Cruise Weather Forecasts - Monthly Tips

Caribbean cruise weather has three seasons every year: dry, rainy and in-between.

The dry season and most popular time to cruise is January through April. The rainy season is part of the annual Caribbean hurricane season. It officially begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. But rainfall historically is moderate in June and climbs steadily until reaching a high point in September. It declines a bit in October for most destinations and declines even more in November.

The “in-between” seasons with moderate rainfall are usually the months of May and December.

Cruise weather is an important factor in deciding which months are ideal for going on a Caribbean cruise and which months are riskier for weather.

Although the dry season is a popular time to cruise, the rainy season has some appeal for budget-minded travelers because prices are usually lower.

Caribbean Temperatures

Daily temperatures are mostly predictable and stay within a fairly narrow range throughout the year. They make any month good for someone who doesn’t plan to swim or spend an afternoon cruise stopover on a beach. But water temperatures especially in the winter make swimming too chilly for many people.

Beaches off the eastern coast of Mexico are cool during the winter and suffer from strong breezes and cool waters.

If a winter cruise sounds appealing, try the southern Caribbean because destinations such as Aruba are closer to the equator and warmer as a result.

A bigger challenge than water temperatures for Caribbean cruise weather is rainfall because of the annual hurricane season, which officially runs from the beginning of June through the end of November.

Rainfall is especially heavy in September and October.

It especially climbs for the Central American nations that face the Caribbean Sea, which makes a western Caribbean cruise for that time of year less appealing.

Despite a hurricane season that runs from June through November, in reality many cruises avoid bad weather for two important reasons:

The biggest advantage of a fall Caribbean cruise is price. One search of prices on the Web site of a major cruise company showed that six-day western Caribbean cruises were as much as $200 less expensive per person in August as the same cruise in July and another $100 cheaper in September.

A southern cruise has the best chances of avoiding bad weather, but it isn’t guaranteed.

Cruise Weather Tips

Tip #1: If you like to swim, avoid cruises during the winter in the northern destinations such as the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.

You’re not alone if you’re worried about how cold it gets in Alaska or which month is best to avoid the rain. The weather in Alaska is unpredictable and can change at a moment’s notice.

It’s not uncommon to wake up to a hot sunny day, only to find it cold and raining 10 minutes later.

We’ve put together this Alaska cruise weather guide to help you find the best time to cruise to Alaska .

Alaska Cruise Weather by Month

The Alaska cruise season generally runs from May to September, with occasional cruises in April and October.

The below chart shows the Alaska cruise temperatures you can expect on the inside passage, along with rainfall and hours of daylight:

Many cruise ships begin their summer deployments to Alaska in May before peak season begins in June.

The Alaska cruise weather in June is fairly cool, but it has the least amount of rainfall during the Alaska cruise season. You can expect Alaska cruise temperatures in May to have lows of around 40 and highs of around 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

May is one of the best times to visit Alaska for dry weather, fewer crowds, and lots of wildlife.

During May, you’ll find several whale species along Alaska’s inside passage. By this time of the year, most of the whales will have completed their migration from the warm waters of Mexico to Alaska, where they will spend the summer.

Spring is also the time to spot newborn wildlife.

You can expect to see lots of snow-capped mountains, and there are fewer insects and mosquitos.

Early June is when the Alaska cruise season kicks into high gear. The warming weather allows cruise ships to travel through the Arctic waters providing unique opportunities for passengers.

The Alaska cruise temperature is warmer in June, with lows of 45 and highs in the low 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure to pack insect repellant when you visit Alaska in June, as mosquitos and other insects can become a nuisance.

The warm weather makes it one of the best times to witness the calving of glaciers.

You can expect 18-20 hours of daylight in June, providing lots of time to enjoy the Alaskan wilderness and abundant wildlife.

June is one of the best months for wildlife sightings, with caribou, black bears, mountain goats, moose calves, and even polar bears out and about.

Alaska Cruise Weather in July

• Average Rainfall : 4.14 inches
• Hours of Daylight : 17.3 hours of daylight

July is the peak season for Alaska cruises and provides the best Alaska cruise weather and wildlife opportunities. This month has some of the warmest weather, longest daylight hours, and the largest number of tourists.

Temperatures in July average from the high 40s to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

The warm weather and long hours of sunlight mean you’ll want to pack sunglasses and sunscreen. You should still wear layers when visiting the port, but if you’re planning active shore excursions like hikes or glacier walks, you’ll want to stick with lightweight clothing.

July is an ideal month to visit for salmon fishing, cultural festivals, bear viewing, and small-town exploring. With the popularity of July cruising, cruise prices are at their highest.

Despite having the best weather, Alaska’s weather in July is very unpredictable. You’ll want to pack for all kinds of weather and wear a lightweight rain jacket.

Alaska Cruise Weather in August

• Average Rainfall : 5.37 inches
• Hours of Daylight : 15.2 hours of daylight

August is when the Alaska cruise season begins to wind down. During this month, you can expect the weather begins to cool, higher rainfall, and gorgeous fall landscapes.

You may be able to find some deals towards mid-August, but expect full fares for the most part.

The chance of rain during this month is over 50%, so you’ll want to pack plenty of waterproof gear – including waterproof shoes and wool socks.

Alaska Cruise Weather in September

• Hours of Daylight : 12.4 hours of daylight

As school returns to session, cruise prices dip and provide travelers with last-minute bargains to take an Alaskan cruise.

The temperatures in September are slightly cooler, with highs of 55 and lows around 40 degrees fair height. September is also the rainiest month of the cruise season. So be prepared to pack lots of rain gear.

September also sees fewer crowds than in the summer. However, the shoulder season has become more prevalent in recent years, making great deals harder to find. Knowing when to book your cruise can help you save money on your trip.

Due to the shorter daylight hours, September provides the best opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis from an Alaskan cruise.

• The coldest recorded temperature in Alaska is -79.8° F (-62° C) at Prospect Creek on January 23, 1971. It also holds the record as the coldest recorded temperature in the United States
• The hottest recorded temperature in Alaska is 100° F (38° C). The temperature was recorded on June 27, 1905, in Fort Yukon
• Juneau, Alaska, is the cloudiest place in the US, with only a 30% chance of seeing the sun.
• 1952-1953 set the record for most snowfall in a year with 971.5 inches of snow.
• Yakutat, Alaska, holds the record as the rainiest place in the US, with an annual rainfall of 160 inches each year.

Final Thoughts

Alaska cruise weather is unpredictable. The weather conditions can change several times throughout the day, which is why it’s best to pack plenty of layers and a lightweight raincoat.

The best time to cruise Alaska for good weather is between late June and early July. The summer months have the warmest temperatures and the least amount of snowfall.

Not to mention you’ll have a better chance of seeing humpback whales, king salmon, bears, moose, and bald eagles.

What happens if my cruise line changes my itinerary or ship?

Imagine that Caribbean cruise you've been looking forward to suddenly becomes a voyage to Canada and New England instead, or that the ship you booked isn't the one on which you'll actually be sailing. It's not common, but it's possible for a cruise line to make changes to your sailing after you've booked or even after you've set sail -- which is why it's so important to be flexible when you're a passenger.

Here, I'll walk you through what happens when a cruise line alters itineraries or shuffles vessels to new locations, what you're owed if changes occur and some steps you can take to protect your booking.

My cruise line changed my itinerary

Why it could happen

There are many reasons why a cruise itinerary might change. They include inclement weather that forces a ship to avoid dangerous conditions, medical emergencies that require your vessel to divert to the nearest port of call, port closures, ship mechanical issues, scheduling conflicts and a host of other causes.

What to expect if it does

Because itinerary changes often involve time, money and a big logistical and customer service nightmare, cruise lines will do all they can to avoid making alterations on a whim. If major tweaks are necessary due to foreseen events, they're usually made well in advance, allowing passengers to change their plans if they wish.

In those cases, passengers can expect to receive notice through their travel agents or via correspondence (likely email) from the cruise line.

In cases where last-minute changes are necessary, passengers will either be notified through one of the methods mentioned above or through public address announcements or in-cabin letters if the sailing is already underway.

Itinerary changes can range from minor to sweeping. If it's the former, you might see the ports from your original itinerary show up in a different order. You could also see one port skipped and replaced with another or with a sea day.

In the most extreme cases — particularly those involving tropical storms during hurricane season — I've seen entire regions scrapped and replaced with something else. An example is when a Canada and New England voyage replaces one that had been scheduled to visit the Caribbean.

What am I owed?

Per the terms of the cruise contract to which you consent before sailing, cruise lines do not owe you compensation if they alter your itinerary. If changes are made, you will be refunded for any shore excursions you booked through the cruise line that were to take place in the ports you're skipping. (Check with your tour provider directly if you've booked a third-party excursion.)

In most cases, you will also be refunded for the taxes and fees levied by the missed ports. However, if alternative ports are substituted, you might not get your money back.

Cruise lines sometimes offer compensation as a goodwill gesture, but you shouldn't expect it. I've seen it range from a small amount of onboard credit or partial future cruise credits to full refunds and, in extreme cases, full refunds plus free future cruises.

If the itinerary change is major and announced prior to your sailing, a cruise line might give booked passengers the opportunity to cancel or reschedule their cruise without incurring the usual penalties.

My cruise line changed my ship

As with itinerary changes, ship changes can be made for a number of reasons. However, they're most common when a cruise line releases new deployments for its vessels, causing several of them to shift to new home ports or regions.

The swapping of a ship can also be necessary at times when a vessel is scheduled to go in for routine dry-dock maintenance or if it experiences major mechanical malfunctions that prevent it from sailing safely or at a speed that allows it to complete its scheduled itineraries with regularity.

Cruise lines don't take the switching of hardware lightly and will avoid it whenever possible. Because the reasons for ship changes are generally more widespread, sometimes causing a ripple throughout the entire fleet, they're more rare than itinerary changes.

Because dry-docks and redeployments are almost always planned events, passengers usually receive plenty of notice. If this happens to you, you should be notified by your travel agent or the cruise line.

Vessel changes will almost never take place after a cruise has begun unless there are major mechanical problems or some sort of evacuation is needed.

Although some cruise lines might owe you compensation if a ship swap takes place due to a mechanical breakdown where the line is found to be at fault, it's unlikely that you'll be compensated for a vessel change prior to your scheduled voyage.

Again, cruise lines might choose to compensate passengers in a number of ways, ranging from onboard credit to free cruises, but it shouldn't be an expectation.

The chance of your receiving something for your troubles is dependent on several factors, including how far in advance the changes were made, the reasons they were made and the ship to which your booking is being moved. (If, for example, you were booked on the line's newest vessel, and suddenly you find yourself on its oldest, the line is more likely to offer you something to offset the lack of onboard amenities for which you originally paid.)

How can I protect my booking?

Stay informed

For starters, it's a good idea to book your sailing through a travel agent , who will serve as a point of contact between you and the cruise line if something goes wrong during your trip. The agent can advocate on your behalf so you don't have to deal with the headache yourself, and will be able to relay information from the cruise line to you if alterations are made to your ship or the places you'll visit.

The best way to know what your options are when you book any cruise is to read the fine print. It's available in your cruise contract, which you can access during the pre-cruise online check-in process. It's tedious, but the contract outlines what your rights are and the conditions under which you are owed a refund by your cruise line in the event of changes to the voyage you booked.

Another excellent source of information is your cruise line's cancellation policy. The rules for what happens when a cruise line cancels a sailing are often different from those that apply if you, the passenger, opt to cancel . Familiarizing yourself with both of these will help you to better understand your options and entitlements.

Consider travel insurance

Travel insurance is another way to protect your vacation investment. I recommend a policy that's purchased from a third party (not the cruise line) and includes "cancel for any reason," trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage.

If your cruise line changes something about your sailing and you no longer wish to go, a "cancel for any reason" travel insurance policy can help you to recoup any costs that can't be fully refunded by your cruise line when you cancel. A regular insurance policy would not cover costs for a trip you choose to cancel because you don't like the ship or itinerary changes.

However, most insurance plans can help you to be reimbursed for all or part of what you paid if changes to your sailing result in delays.

Note that you will also have to insure other travel arrangements linked to the trip, such as pre- or post-cruise flights and hotel stays, if you want them to be covered.

Bottom line

The best approach to take with any cruise is to know that, although it's unlikely, anything can change at any time, and you generally won't be compensated.

If you have your heart set on visiting a particular place, it's best to plan a land-based trip to that location. Also make sure that you understand the cancellation policies and fine print for the cruise you're booking, as well as those for any third-party excursions you're booking, in case your sailing is altered.

Above all, try to make the most of your sailing, whether it's the one you expected or something a bit different. Remember: You're still on a cruise.

As someone who's taken over 50 cruises all over the world, I know firsthand how popular cruising is this year. But one seabound itinerary people often forget to add to their bucket lists is a Mediterranean cruise .

The dreamy ships take passengers around European destinations like Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

After taking my first Mediterranean cruise last year, here's what I think everyone should know before booking the route.

Going early or late in the sailing season means fewer crowds and better weather.

Many cruise lines, like Virgin, Celebrity, and Disney, start the Mediterranean season in early spring and sail through early fall.

Going early or late in the season usually means you'll have more tolerable weather and smaller crowds in some of the big destinations like Athens .

I made the mistake of going on my Mediterranean cruise at the end of May (over Memorial Day weekend).

Some ports of call, like Nice, France, were easy to get around, but others like Rome were packed to the gills. I wanted the day to end before we even made it to the Vatican on our tour.

Arriving at your embarkation port early is key to having a smooth sailing.

My biggest tip for any cruise — but especially for Americans traveling to Europe for a Mediterranean cruise — is to arrive at your embarkation city at least a day before your sailing starts.

This gives you plenty of time to ensure you make it to the port, especially with the airline delays that typically spike in the summer. The boat isn't going to wait for you i f you don't land on time

Even though it means paying for lodging and likely a few meals before boarding the boat, getting a good night's sleep before a jam-packed vacation is worth it to me.

As a bonus, arriving early also gives you a chance to explore the city.

Be sure to pack at least one shirt with sleeves and bottoms that cover your knees.

Some of the major European tourist destinations have strict dress codes — typically everyone must at least cover their shoulders and knees out of respect.

If you're planning on checking out Vatican Ci t y in Italy or the Meteora monasteries in Greece, b e sure to pack at least one outfit that fits the bill.

Most cruise ships have laundry services (self-serve or valet), so you can wear the same dress-code-approved outfit for a few excursion days if needed.

Food tours are a great way to see a city, taste local dishes, and learn some history.

If you're looking for a unique excursion that still gives you the highlights of a European city, I recommend booking a food tour . I've done tours in places like Amsterdam, Budapest, and Paris, and I've never been disappointed.

Food tours can be booked through third-party travel operators, like TripAdvisor or Viator, and offer the chance to see some of the major landmarks of a city, try local dishes, and learn some history all in one outing.

The tours are usually led by locals, which means the guides can also give you some good recommendations if you have time before you need to return to the ship.

Consider booking tours through third-party sites.

Mediterranean cruises can last anywhere from seven days to two weeks, depending on the company and itinerary. Booking every excursion through the cruise line can add up, but luckily, there are typically more affordable options through third-party companies.

But I only book with third-party operators if the ship docks right at the city I want to explore because I never want to miss the all-aboard time.

For example, on my Mediterranean cruise last summer, the ship anchored at Cannes, and I was able to keep my eye on it throughout my excursion.

If the ship docks in a secondary location and you have to travel to the big tourist destinations , I always book excursions through the cruise line. For instance, the day my family and I explored Rome, the ship docked in Civitavecchia, Italy, and we had to take a two-hour bus ride into the city.

Booking with the cruise company guarantees your return to the ship, even if your excursion runs late.

The Best Cruises From Florida

A s a New Englander who loves warm weather and cruising, I find that I am usually cruising from Florida. It’s pretty easy to fly there from Boston, my home airport, and there are so many different cruise ports going to many warm-weather destinations from the Sunshine State. In addition, there are many different itinerary options on Florida cruises, whether you are looking for a short cruise or a longer-duration sailing.

If you are on the East Coast and are looking for a convenient warm-weather cruise home port, consider taking a cruise from Florida. There are many cruise lines, cruise destinations, and home ports to choose from.

Here are the best cruises from Florida, as well as tips for your next Florida sailing.

Popular Florida Cruise Ports

There are several great cruise ports in Florida. All of them are conveniently located near airports and have plenty of airports and attractions nearby. Some of the world’s largest cruise ports are in Florida.

Port Canaveral : This cruise port, located in Central Florida, is closest to the Orlando International Airport (MCO). This is also the closest cruise port to Walt Disney World.

While I typically fly into MCO and stay overnight at the Hyatt Orlando Airport Hotel , you can also stay in nearby Cocoa Beach. Note that it’s about 45-60 minutes from the airport to the cruise port.

Port Miami: Port Miami is one of the largest cruise ship ports in the world. It’s also one of my favorite cruise ports to sail from.

When sailing from Port Miami, you can fly into the Miami International Airport or the Fort Lauderdale Airport. Sometimes, to get better flights and prices, I’ll fly into one airport and fly out of the other.

You’ll also have several areas to stay in. There are lots of great hotels near the port, or you can choose to stay in the Miami Beach/South Beach area. One of my favorite affordable hotels in this area is the Marriott Vacation Club Pulse South Beach Hotel, located right on Ocean Drive.

Port Everglades : Located north of Port Miami is Port Everglades, in Fort Lauderdale. Like Miami, you can fly into either airport. Plenty of hotels are located right near the port, or you can stay on the beach.

Port Tampa Bay: This is a smaller cruise port, located along the Gulf Coast in Tampa Bay. It has three cruise terminals. If you want to visit Tampa, Clearwater Beach, or other nearby destinations either before or after your cruise, Port Tampa Bay is a great option.

There’s also the Jaxport Cruise Terminal (in Jacksonville) and the Port of Palm Beach, both located along the Atlantic Ocean in Florida. These terminals are less busy than the ones listed above.

• Caribbean Destinations:  Typically, these itineraries will be split between Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean sailings. Ports include Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Aruba, St. Maarten, Puerto Plata Dominican Republic, San Juan Puerto Rico, Grand Turk, and Roatan.
• The Bahamas: Some shorter itineraries (especially three-night sailings) go only to the nearby Bahamas, with Nassau and Bimini as popular ports of call. In addition, many popular cruise lines offer private islands/private destinations in the Bahamas. These include Disney’s private island Castaway Cay , MSC’s Ocean Cay, Half Moon Cay owned by Carnival Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay .
• Mexico:  Mexican Ports of Call include Progresso, Cozumel , and Costa Maya . Sometimes these are combined with some of the Caribbean destinations.
• Bermuda:  In some cases, cruise ships sailing from Florida will travel north to Bermuda. Sometimes, these ships will stay overnight in Bermuda so you’ll have more time to explore this beautiful island.
• Transatlantic:  When ships are repositioning for the season, you’ll sometimes see one-way, transatlantic sailings from Florida to a European destination.
• Key West: One of my all-time favorite cruise ports is Key West in the Florida Keys. It’s very easy to explore and offers great restaurants and shops. As a plus, you can even use your cell phone as normal since you’ll still be in the United States.

Cruise Lines sailing from Florida

If you are sailing to the Caribbean, I think you should choose the cruise line before selecting a specific itinerary. There are so many options that you are likely to find a great itinerary for your family from the cruise line you select.

If you are traveling with younger kids, it’s very important that you carefully consider what your kids will like – think about things like kids’ clubs, kids’ menus, and activities like water slides and pools.

Tips for Sailing from Florida

When you are sailing from Florida, there are a few tips we recommend.

Time of Year: The most important thing is to consider when you want to sail. While Florida and the Caribbean can have great beach weather all year long, hurricane season is a big consideration.

We’ve sailed many times during hurricane season, and don’t consider it a deal-breaker. But you will want to plan knowing that there’s always a chance that you’ll have an itinerary interruption. Read about our experience on a sailing that was extended for two days .

Look at Prices: Prices between cruise lines, and even within the same cruise line on different itineraries, can vary. Look at several different options before choosing your cruise.

Book in Advance: You can usually save money by booking in advance, and will have more options for stateroom locations and categories. You’ll also want to do some research about the various ports that are on your itinerary (as well as sea days) and bookable activities/restaurants on your ship. That way, you’ll be prepared when the booking window opens up for excursions and onboard activities.

Pack Thoughtfully: Packing for a cruise requires careful consideration. You won’t want to pack too much because the staterooms are not typically very large. However, you’ll have limited options to purchase replacements for items you’ve forgotten.

Stay overnight the night before: As tempting as it may be to fly in on the morning of your cruise, that can be risky. You’ll potentially have to deal with delayed/canceled flights as well as lost bags. Flying in the day before could be expensive, but it’s worth it for the peace of mind.

First Alert Weather: Low humidity days for the Suncoast.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - A cold front will be passing south of us today causing the winds to shift to the northwest and drive slightly cooler and much drier air into the Suncoast. Any isolated showers remaining from last night will sink south and skies will dry up. Dew points will fall into the mid to lower 50s and stay there for several days. By most people’s standards, dew points in the 50s feel very nice. These lower dew points will be most noticed in the early morning hours when they will allow the overnight temperatures to fall into the upper 50s to low 60s. This should make for some near perfect open window sleeping weather.

Rain chances this week will be little to none. Dew points will tend to stay relatively steady this week, but temperatures will rise. By the end of the week, we will have temperatures that will approach or hit the 90-degree mark. Longer range probability forecast are giving equal chances for above or below normal rainfall but give greater odds for above average temperatures. So, the end of spring and start of summer look to be warm.
