Top 9 Places to Visit in Nashik, Maharashtra

A Pilgrimage Destination and India's Biggest Winery Region

nashik district tourist places

Nashik, approximately four hours northeast of Mumbai in Maharashtra , is a city with a dual identity. On one hand, it's an ancient and sacred pilgrimage destination with a fascinating Old City. On the other, it's home to the biggest winery region in India .

Nashik is closely associated with the great Hindu epic The Ramayana , which tells the story of Lord Ram. According to mythology, Ram (along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman) made Nashik his home during his 14 years of exile from Ayodhya . They lived in the area now known as Panchavati in the Old City. The city gets its name from an incident whereby Lakshman cut off the nose of Surpanakha, the sister of demon Ravan, after she tried to seduce Ram.

These top places to visit in Nashik reflect the city's diversity. An inexpensive full-day Nashik Darshan bus tour departs from the Central Bus Stand at 7.30 am and visits many of the city's attractions including Trimbak. It's best to book the tour at the bus stand the day before. Do note that it comes with a Hindi-speaking guide only. However, it's a great local experience!

In the heart of Nashik's Old City, Ramkund ghat is the most important place in the Panchavati area. It attracts both pilgrims and tourists to its holy waters. Lord Ram is believed to have bathed and performed the death rituals of his father there. Hence, many people come to immerse the ashes of their departed loved ones, to help their souls obtain liberation. The tank was built in 1696 and although it's unfortunately quite dirty and not well maintained, it's an atmospheric and absorbing place to spend some time. The adjoining vibrant vegetable market is worth exploring too.

There are as many as 100 temples in Nashik. Many of them can be found near the holy Godavari River, which flows through the city. The city's most sacred shrine, the beautiful black stone Kala Ram temple, is uphill to the east of Ramkund. It supposedly stands right where Lakshman performed the slicing of Surpanakha's nose. Nearby is Sita Gumpha, a claustrophobic cave where Sita is said to have hid from Ravan. There are some doubts as to its authenticity though.  On the way there, stop by Naroshankar temple, which is close to Ramkund. Kapileswara is another famous temple in the area. It's a Shiva temple but the nandi (bull) is unusually missing from it.

In the opposite direction, Sundar Narayan temple is situated next to Victoria Bridge and offers a fabulous view of the Godavari River. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it's a spacious complex with splendid architecture.

Pandavleni Caves

ePhotocorp/Getty Images

Buddhism also left its mark in Nashik, with 24 rock-cut caves that date back to the 2nd century BC. Inscriptions indicate that most of the construction happened during 2nd century AD and that the caves were occupied up until the 7th century AD. Following the decline of Buddhism, Jain monks began inhabiting the caves and contributed to their structure. Funding for the caves was provided generously by the rulers of the Satavahana dynasty, along with donations from people of all walks of life.

The main cave, number 18, is a prayer hall with a stupa . The other caves that hold the most interest are three and 10. Cave three is notable for its sculptures of idols, while cave 10 is structurally intact along with its inscriptions. It's believed to be as old as the Karla Caves near Lonavala in Maharashtra.

The Pandavleni Caves are located about 15 minutes southwest of Nashik, just off the Mumbai-Nashik Highway. Visit early in the morning before it gets hot, as it's a 30-minute uphill trek. Plus, the caves face east and their carvings are illuminated by the morning sun. There's an entry fee of 20 rupees for Indians and 250 rupees for foreigners.

Wine tourism is flourishing in Nashik. There are almost 50 vineyards in and around the city. Many now have tasting rooms , restaurants and accommodations for guests. Appealing discounts of 10-20% on retail price are also available on purchases. The vineyards fan out in all directions from Nashik though, so you'll need a car to reach them. Either that or take a wine tour. Head to Sanjegaon district (40 minutes before Nashik), Dindori district (45 minutes north of Nashik), and Gangapur Dam (20 minutes west of Nashik). York Winery and Sula Vineyards are both in the Gangapur Dam area. Boutique Utopia Farm Stay is conveniently located near these wineries. It makes a great getaway from Mumbai.

Nashik's first artisanal cheese company is barely a couple minutes drive from York Winery and makes quality natural organic cheeses to pair with your wine. Varieties include mozzarella, feta, gouda (with chilli and black pepper variations), and cheddar. Cheese tastings are provided and cost 200 rupees per person. You can also see the cheese-making process upon request. Le Fromage is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.

Zonkars Adventure Park

Kids and thrill-seekers will be happy to visit this adventure park in the area, also just down the road from York Winery. It has numerous activities such as go-karting, rockclimbing, bungee trampoline, ATV rides, zip-lining, archery, target shooting, net cricket, and carnival games. The park is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Gangapur Dam

Maharashtra Tourism

Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) offers boating and water sports at its recently launched boat club on the northern bank of Gangapur Dam. The boat club is part of the corporation's modern new Grape Park Resort , which sprawls alongside the dam. Other hotels in the area may arrange informal boating on the dam as well. Or, simply just sit and relax there, and enjoy the serenity.

Side Trip to Trimbak

Trimbakeshwar temple, around 40 minutes west of Nashik, is particularly revered and popular with pilgrims. This temple is one of the 12 jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva, where he appeared as a pillar of light. Its substantial stone exterior is covered with intricate sculptures. Most of the action of the Nashik Kumbh Mela happens in the vicinity of the temple.

If you have children, Shubham Water World is a fun place to take them on the way to Trimbakeshwar from Nashik. There's a small coin museum en-route to Trimbakeshwar as well. It's part of the Indian Institute of Research in Numismatic Studies campus.

Brahmagiri Hill

vbel71/Getty Images

Those who are feeling energetic can hike up the trail to Brahmagiri Hill not far from Trimbakeshwar temple. It starts out from the back of the MTDC Sanskruti Resort. Allow two to three hours to reach the top. You'll be rewarded with a fabulous view! A couple of temples are there as well. Auto rickshaws will go part of the way up. The hill is regarded as a huge form of Lord Shiva, and the holy Godavari River originates from it and flows underground before emerging at Kushavarta Kund in the Trimbakeshwar temple compound.

About 500 meters from Kalaram temple is a cave called Sita Gufa . It was the resting place of goddess Sita. It definitely reminded me of my Cu-Chi tunnel experience from Ho Chi Minh city .

Tip: keep your backpack/tote bags in the care as lugging them in these narrow caves will be super difficult.

Panchavati ghat/ Ram Kund

Again a few hundred meters ahead is the venue where Kumbh Mela takes place. It is the holy place where the Godavari river flows through the city.

Honestly, there is not much to do at this place other than dipping your feet in the water and watching people pay respects to the river.

After climbing almost 250 steps (some of which are a bit steep) you come across a group of 24 caves. Most caves have sculptures or carvings outside the cave and are blank or have very indistinct inscriptions on the inside. All the caves are marked with numbers from outside. The trek to the caves reminded me of Bhaja caves while climbing Lohagad Fort and Achalgarh in Mount Abu .

Even though the name is Pandav, the caves bear no resemblance to the Pandavas but were a place of worship for Buddhist monks or for disciples to meet and hear sermons.

Pros: a small hike to an utterly beautiful place. The view of Nashik city from the top is lovely which makes it one of the best places to visit in Nashik .

Cons: though shoes are recommended to hike this hillock, most caves demand you to remove footwear. So wear something quick is comfortable yet quick to remove and wear.

Entry fee: Rs. 25

Timing: 8:30 am to 5:30 pm

The hike towards Pandavleni

Anjaneri Hills and Fort

There are many treks near Nashik to choose from out of which, Anjaneri is a popular trekking place for the locals, especially during monsoons.

Anjaneri is only 25km from Nashik city. Anjaneri has one of the famous forts in the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar mountain range. The views during the trek and from the top are breathtaking and hence this is an absolute must-do attraction in Nashik. However, it needs a full day.

In order to reach the Anjaneri fort, hire a car/bike and get down at Anjaneri village. There are some steps next to the village entrance, through which one can reach the plateau of Anjaneri. From Anjaneri village, it is an hour and a half hike to reach the plateau of Anjaneri.

The trekkers can also pay their respects in a temple. There is a cave about 10 min away from here with beautiful carvings. The fort has a huge perimeter and commands splendid views of the Trimbakeshwar Peak, Vaitarna back waters and Brahmagiri. This fort and the trek reminded me of climbing Kumbhalgarh Fort .

Someshwar Waterfalls

A small detour before going to Sula Vineyards can get you to the Someshwar waterfalls.

About 10 km from the city, the falls are in full splendour in monsoon but not so much in other seasons. When I visited it was a meagre stream with a lot of waste thrown in and some local boys trying to catch some fish.

The disappointing Someshwar waterfall

Dugarwadi Waterfalls

On the way to Trimbakeshwar, about 40km from Nashik lies the beautiful and weirdly shaped mountains. These are home to many of the waterfalls. Dugarwadi waterfall is one of them as it is on the way and only a short hike will give you an outstanding view.

As usual, its beauty can best be enjoyed during monsoons. This is one of the favourite Nashik Tourist places.

Drive to Sapgon on NH-848, which is around 4 km from Trimbakeshwar. From Sapgon the waterfall is 4 km. It will take close to 45 minutes to reach the viewpoint as there are slopes to climb and it can get slippery. A word of caution: follow the signs! If you want to trek to the bottom of the waterfall, it will take more time.

Nashik tourist places for Wine Lovers

Sula vineyards.

Sula Vineyards is one of the most popular tourist places in Nashik. While people from across the world throng Sula during the Sula Fest, it is open across the year for tourists to see the vineyards, watch the making of mine, taste the wine or just dine overlooking the vineyards. If you even think that Sula Vineyard is worth visiting then let me tell you that the entry is practically free (Rs. 200 per person but redeemable against any paid activity or purchase in their shop).

Since I went in the month of February, the grape season was in full ripe mode with harvesting just about to start. I had a good half-day at Sula where I did the wine tour and tasting. It is a 45-minute tour where they take the tourists around the production and show how the wine is manufactured. After the tour, you get to taste 6 of their wines – 4 whites and 2 reds served with a cracker.

There is a wine shop and a souvenir shop where you can purchase wines and T-shirts.

Time: 11:30 am to 10:30pm

Entry fee: Rs. 200 per person

Wine tour and tasting: Rs. 400 per person

Coin Museum of Nasik, one of its kind in India, gives tourists a glimpse of Indian currency evolution over years. I tried to collect coins in my growing years but I lost interest. In the museum, one can see exhibits like moulds, dyes, replicas, and photographs of coins from ancient time.

Looks like an amazing place; I hadn’t heard much of it before so thanks for sharing! Definitely will come back to this when I plan my India trip!

Oh you must visit for a weekend atleast if you are in Mumbai. I’ll recommend going in February.

' src=

Thanks for all the tips!!! It looks amazing!! Beautiful photos!

Thank you for going through the blog and taking time to leave a comment 🙂

' src=

So interesting to read this! I have never been before but would love to go now.

Oh you must. I was surprised myself to find so many places to visit in Nashik.

' src=

Right when I read it was the wine capital of India I was ready for the wine making part! I’ve never thought of India as a wine-producing country but it is so interesting to know it is. Visiting the beautiful surroundings and then going to a winery sound amazing!

Ya India surprises everyone with the kind of places and things on offer! 🙂

' src=

I lived in Pune for years and never made it to Nashik once! I can see what I’ve missed! Dugarwadi waterfalls look so amazing! As do the temples. Sula vineyards are also a place I wanted to visit – maybe the next time I’m in India.

I know! Nashik is unfortunately never considered a tourist place actually. But it has so much to offer!

' src=

I am so intrigued that this is known as wine lover county. I didn’t know that and would love to try some of their blends. Oh my, Kalaram temple is stunning architecture, I would love to visit.

Well India wasn’t a wine country till 2 decades ago but this local vineyard changed the scene and now the wines are even exported.

' src=

This isn’t the first time that I’ve read a lot of the waterfalls in India are best viewed during monsoon season. Why is that out of curiosity? I would love to see the Dugarwadi waterfall. That is a stunning view! But, I must say what thoroughly captured my attention is the Nashik Flower Park. How creative to turn a waterpark for the summer into a flower park for the winter. I love that idea!

Well due to the rains, the water level is better in monsoon. In other seasons the flow is less so the grandeur of a waterfall is less. That’s the only reason to visit in monsoon.

' src=

Nashik is such a gem! Besides loving it for being the wine capital of India, I loved the temples. Kalaram temple has stunning architecture, and you have photographed it so well! It looks so much like Grishneshwar Temple, only it is black. Coin museum and Dugarwadi waterfalls will definitely be in my list to visit.

I am glad this post makes you want to visit Nashik. It is a surprise package for sure 🙂

State Emblem of India

District Nashik has a dignified place in terms of Tourism and various tourist visits regularly here.

One of the most popular destinations for the pious Hindus, Jains and Buddhists and also known for its association with the epic ‘Ramayana’, Nashik not only has an ethereal and spiritual quality about it but is also a touch point for tourists who wish to explore its interesting forts and a unique centre that offers courses in ‘vipassana’. It’s also one of the most up-and-coming cities in Maharashtra with a vibrant culture and entertainment ethos.

Located in north-west Maharashtra, 171 kilometers from Mumbai and 210 kilometers from Pune, Nashik is the third-largest city in the state after Mumbai and Pune. It is also a city that has lured people from distant regions for hundreds of years. In fact, the antiquity of the city goes back to prehistoric times and archaeological excavations carried out here on the banks of river Godavari have revealed the evidence of habitation from the Chalcolithic age dating back to approximately 1,400 – 1,300 BCE. Above all, it is the link that Nashik provides with the epic Ramayana that makes it so very important to both, the faithful and the historians.

According to the legends, Rama, Seeta and Lakshman had stayed in the forests near this place, then known as Janasthana. The nose-cutting episode (Sanskrit Nasika) of Shurpanakha at the hands of Lakshmana is believed to be the etymological explanation for the name of the city. Alternatively, the city has also preserved a tradition of a proverb in Marathi which, translated, states that it was settled on nine peaks. According to many scholars, this is a more plausible explanation for the origin of the name.

Nashik is famous for its numerous temples constructed during the reigns of different rulers. These include the magnificent ones at Sinnar, Anjaneri, Trimbakeshwar and those in the city itself. Out of these, the temples at Sinnar and Anjaneri were constructed in around 11 th  – 12 th  century CE by the Yadava kings and their feudatories. Out of these the Aishwaryeshwar Mandir and the Gondeshwar Mandir at Sinnar are the most impressive with their beautiful sculptures. The temple complex at Anjaneri consists of Jain and a few Hindu temples at the foot of the fort and the legends identify the hill as the birthplace of Hanuman.

The small town of Anjaneri is also famous for the internationally acclaimed Indian Institute of Research in Numismatic Studies. It has a very informative money museum explaining the development of currency in India through the ages. The temple at Trimbakeshwar, one of the 12 ‘ Jyotirlinga s’ (the phallic emblem of Shiva with fire), is considered the most sacred of all such places. The town of Trimbakeshwar is located at the origin of the river Godavari, considered the Ganga of the Deccan.

The archives of the Brahmin priests in this town are remarkable for preserving the records of the families for whom they have been conducting the rituals for generations together. The Kumbh Mela is celebrated here during Simhastha (i.e. when Jupiter and Sun are in the zodiac sign Leo) which comes after every 12 years. At this time, millions of Hindus – both ascetics and other devotees – gather and bathe in the river. Trimbakeshwar is also associated with Nivruttinath, brother of Sant Jnaneshwar and is therefore considered a special seat of the Naath Sampradaya.
