The best travel wash bags to pack on your next trip

By Charley Ward

Dreamy scene of a woman perching on the side of a roll top bathtub in a luxurious room

As a team that's constantly travelling around the world, our editors have strong opinions when it comes to packing. A quality suitcase is a must, packing cubes are the secret key to travelling hand luggage only, and an organised wash bag is an absolute essential. The tricky part is pretty much every accessories brand, hotel and even airline has a wash bag now. Much like the mass of branded tote bags out there, the average bag tends to be a printed canvas zip-up pouch that can look nice but isn't that practical when it comes to travelling.

In our experience, the best way to choose the right travel wash bag depends on the kind of trip you're set to take.

For short trips: I love the ease of a clear case for stashing all of your essentials. Not only is it easy to find everything, but if you're travelling with only carry on luggage , a clear case avoids the need to unpack and repack your items into one of those plastic sleeves when going through security at the airport.

For long trips: Whether you're in one place for a long time or travelling around multiple destinations, hanging wash bags offer the feel of unpacking without having to actually unpack all of your products.

For beauty fans: Regardless of the length of your trip, if you're not one for travelling light consider investing in a cosmetic case, which are larger than your average wash bag and full of compartments and pouches to keep everything organised.

The best clear wash bags

natural extracts travel wash bag

Why we like it: If you’re travelling for more than a couple of days, I use the  Space NK Large Travel Bags  or  Medium Travel Bags . They are brilliant for organising your wares into categories, and because they’re clear, it’s easy to find things fast. Anita Bhagwandas

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, and Handbag

Why we like it: This svelte wash bag has all the hallmarks of an Anya Hindmarch piece. Much like the brand’s clever in-flight bag, it’s been crafted to house all your essentials just so, with smart embossed labels for each compartment. There’s a roomy monogrammed nylon section, and a clear one for easy access to most-used products. Gold finishes and smart monogramming makes this an effortlessly chic buy that’ll work comfortably for trips of up to two-weeks in length.

Classic wash bags

Why we like it: This is one of the roomier wash bags we rate, so it should be all you need to keep your personal care items safe throughout trips of up to two weeks. There are separate compartments for your makeup and skincare, along with additional pockets for brushes. Choose from four colours, or there’s also a clear version. At under £20, it’s a steal – and it would make a great gift for a frequent traveller.

Why we like it: Because of the pockets. This sleek, unobtrusive wash bag packs in six side pockets, a separate hidden compartment and two main sections for bulkier products, making it as easy as can be to organise all your products abroad. A handle makes it easy to tote from suitcase to bathroom, and the PVC outer can be easily refreshed with a quick wipe down if needed.

For long trips: hanging wash bags

Why we like it: After hours of research, Bagsmart Toiletry Travel Bag With Hook is the ultimate long-haul travel bag. It may look like any other wash bag, but it is the smallest details that make this a winner. The design ensures that it packs flat, even when it’s stuffed full, there are compartments for everything you’d ever need, and it has a hanger to save valuable space in the bathroom. It’s perfect. Anita Bhagwandas

Why we like it: I recently took this on a two week trip where I stayed at three different hotels. I was travelling with my family and this made storing and organising all of our bathroom items a breeze. I particularly loved the bottom compartment which can be completely detached and has a sheer top so you can store all of your in-flight essentials and take it through security and onto the flight. Very clever. Lauren Burvill

For beauty fans: vanity cases

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, Baggage, and Suitcase

Why we like it: Fans of Steamline’s vintage luggage pieces can complete their set with the brand’s sweet little vanity case. It’s on the pricier side, but what other wash bag doubles up as a handbag? Inside there’s a roomy main compartment for all your bits and pieces, along with a mesh bag to keep jewellery and hair ties easily to hand. This case can be attached to your suitcase with the passthrough band too – good for if you’re using it as an underseat cabin bag.

Why we like it: Firstly, the colour – when it comes to brightly coloured luggage Beis is the best in the business. Inside there's plenty of storage and pockets including a very clever removable makeup brush holder with hidden magnets – a genius hack to avoid getting your brushes dirty or damaged. My favourite part though is the slip pocket with a removable mirror – ideal for when the lighting in your hotel bathroom isn't the best. Lauren Burvill

Why we like it: For a truly luxe option, this Smythson case is crafted in their signature Panama cross-grain leather and comes in three shades – black, pale blue and beige. Inside, there are two main zip-up compartments, as well as additional storage pockets, including ruched pockets and elastic straps to keep everything neatly in place. Lauren Burvill

Clothing has to stand up to so much on the road — wine spills, peak-ascending sweat, germ-ridden public spaces, and, for ultralight packers, repetitive wear. That's when having the perfect laundry bag tucked away in your suitcase becomes your closest ally.

To help you find the perfect one to stash, and even wash, your favorite garments, we researched the options across many designs, materials, and price points. Our top pick is the Eagle Creek Pack-it Isolate Clean/Dirty Cube for its antimicrobial treatment, adaptable compartment, and durable, ultra-light material. In addition to this do-it-all bag, our list includes everything from waterproof bags to hanging bags, too.

Best Overall

Eagle creek isolate clean/dirty cube.

Eagle Creek

This versatile laundry cube isolates clean and dirty clothes while keeping water out and odor away.

The floating divider does mean that dirty and clean clothes are not totally separated.

The Pack-it Isolate Clean/Dirty Cube by Eagle Creek easily checks off our wish list for a travel laundry bag. From the antimicrobial treated material that actively fights odors building in your clothes to its ultra-lightweight and durable translucent ripstop polyester fabric so you can see what is packed where, this machine-washable bag is designed to help make packing — and the laundry itself — easier to handle.

Backed by Eagle Creek's lifetime warranty, this water-resistant 7.5-liter cube features grab handles for unpacking quickly and self-repairing zippers for the toughest travel days. Of course, the free-floating internal divider provides as much or as little space as you need to separate reusable worn clothes from the beyond-dirty. Thanks to its thoughtful design with utility and versatility in mind, travelers can keep reaching for the Pack-it Isolate cube year after year.

The Details: Antimicrobial poly ripstop | 1.8 ounces | Zipper

Best Collapsible

Mumi laundry bag.

This collapsible bag folds down to just 5 by 8 inches, making it an easy item to tuck away into your suitcase for later use.

The PVC mesh doesn’t easily disintegrate, so the bag has a large environmental footprint.

Though this is not the greenest option, it is one of the lightest laundry bags available as the ultra-packable bag folds into an even tinier stow bag. Apart from slimming down the amount of space the laundry bag takes up, Mumi also recommends using the small storage bag to stash small additional items when the laundry bag is in use. The straightforward collapsible laundry bag also includes a folding hanger for your convenience. Another added benefit of this small-but-mighty laundry bag is that it is odor- and water-resistant. This highly functional laundry bag is undoubtedly best for those wishing to dedicate the least amount of suitcase space.

The Details: PVC mesh | 1.58 ounces | Zipper

Best Odor-blocking

Stnky wash bag.

The inner mesh bag allows clothes to breathe while the outer layer locks in odors, moisture, and germs.

It’s a bit small.

This double-layered bag is best known for sealing in odors, but it is perfect for those who want to avoid pulling every piece of clothing out of the bag. As a contact-free laundry bag, the inner mesh bag can fall from the inside allowing you to drop the clothes straight from the bag into the washing machine. Additionally, the entire pack can be washed and dried at high temperatures to kill germs and odor-causing bacteria.

The Details: Mesh | 4.2 ounces | Zipper

Best Machine-washable

Grove co. laundry bag set.

These bags are just the right size for zipping up your delicates so they are ready to toss in the washing machine straight out of your luggage.

The mesh bags are not meant to block odor, so be careful where you pack them.

Made by a Certified B Corporation , this set of bags for delicates is one of the most affordable and packable options. Designed for an easy transfer as you unpack, these mesh delicate bags will allow your laundry to breathe until it is time to hit the washing machine. The Grove Co. set is also dryer-safe and was created to help maintain the shape of your delicate laundry. Unlike some mesh laundry bags, this duo of medium and large zippered bags can go directly from the washing machine into the dryer to continue protecting your delicates throughout the entire cycle.

The Details: Mesh | Zipper

Best Large-capacity

Homest travel laundry bag.

The bag itself is machine washable and durable.

Because it’s large, you may not want to stuff it full before repacking in your suitcase.

This laundry bag two-pack is made of thick nylon with ripstop stitching, so you can really stuff the bag with all of your dirty items. While it may become too thick for a carry-on or small checked bag, this is the perfect laundry bag for longterm stays or even camping trips. The simple drawstring closure allows you to fill the bag and bring to your hotel's laundry or stick in the back of your vehicle without the risk of losing any items along the way. Plus, the bag is so lightweight and compact on its own that you can pop it right into your luggage and fill as needed.

The Details: Nylon | 0.44 pounds | Drawstring

Cotopaxi Travel Cube Bundle

Made with lightweight materials and breathable mesh, this cube bundle includes an array of sizes ranging from 2 to 10 liters.

Because the sides of these bags are mesh, odors can spread from dirty clothes to clean clothes.

Fashioned by employees with the creative agency to choose their own colorful patterns, the Cotopaxi travel cube bundle includes 2-, 3- and 10-liter repurposed nylon and mesh-sided bags. Though the nylon front and back of the bags are helpful in blocking odor transfer, the bags of dirty clothes should be separated from clean clothes in a backpack or suitcase to prevent odors from settling into the fibers of clean clothes. These bags are well-made for those looking to stave off mold and bacteria growth on dirty clothes. Because this set packs down so well when empty, you can easily take all of them along or just the bag you know you will need for your trip.

The Details: Recycled nylon and mesh | 1 ounce per 2-liter capacity | Zipper

Best Water-resistant

Helly hansen scout wash bag.

Helly Hansen

This affordable option will protect its contents from getting wet even in the worst of weather.

This bag is not designed to fold flat or compress, meaning it will need to fit into a suitcase at its existing size.

Made with water-resistant, TPU-treated polyester, this modular bag is designed to prevent any kind of leak from seeping in — or out. This Norwegian-designed bag was created with harsh weather in mind and can easily fit into any existing system of packing cubes. Its mesh pocket is handy for tucking underwear, buffs, tank tops, or any other small, light layer of clothing away. Otherwise, roll up your layers and neatly stack them in this small wash bag until you get home. The handle is perfect for hanging the bag on your doorknob until you are ready to tackle the latest adventure's laundry.

The Details: Polyester, TPU | 7.05 ounces | Zipper

Best Organization

Modoker travel duffel bag.

With a designated place for everything, this bag provides the ultimate organization and surprising opportunities for stashing laundry.

This carry-on bag is primarily designed to stash clean clothes and gear so there are no odor-blocking features.

While this bag is an easy carry-on choice for any traveler looking for specialized organization options, this highly compartmentalized duffel can also easily hold laundry in its hidden pockets. Though soiled clothes can certainly be stuffed into the primary compartment, dirty clothes can also be stored in the hanging garment section as well as the shoe pocket on the left side of the bag. Keep in mind that this 45-liter bag is made of nylon, so it should easily pack even your largest pieces of dirty clothing.

The Details: Nylon | 2.53 pounds | Zipper

Best Durable

Patagonia black hole mlc cube.

Patagonia uses environmentally friendly recycled materials and supports living wages with a Fair Trade supply chain.

This compartmentalized bag does not completely fold flat.

Made with 100 percent post-consumer recycled polyester ripstop and a post-industrial recycled TPU-film laminate, this 12-liter bag is large enough to hold most of your dirty clothes within the primary compartment under the roll-top closure. There is, however, a secondary compartment that features a zipper closure. While the mesh compartments of the more traditional 10-liter Black Hole Cube are great, the higher level of compartmentalization in the Black Hole MLC Cube is appreciated for those who want to pack away a worn shirt that might need to be used again. Apart from its dual-compartment versatility, you can feel good about buying Patagonia's recycled materials. Not only are they reused, but the TPU-treated polyester ripstop is built to resist punctures, fraying, and anything else you might encounter.

The Details: Recycled polyester ripstop | 6.9 ounces | Roll-top and zipper

Best Compression

Tripped travel gear the carry-on set.

Tripped Travel Gear

The different shapes and sizes can accommodate a variety of clothing such as sweaters, shoes, and stacks of T-shirts.

Not all clothes will fit into the cubes or can be compressed.

The Carry-on Set is great for those hoping to maximize the limited space inside a carry-on with a pack of seven tough bags. Made with ripstop polyurethane fabric and reinforced zippers, this compression set can multitask as a neat place to stash your dirty clothes — especially if those clothes include caked-on grime that needs to be contained beyond the included toggle-cord laundry bag. Polyurethane is designed to keep moisture out, which is great for your clean clothes and even better for keeping dirty clothes separated. While you won't likely have to worry about the bags themselves ripping thanks to the material, the compression zippers are also double-stitched to make them as strong as can be. Larger, bulkier clothing such as heavy winter coats or very chunky sweaters might not be well suited to be stashed away in these bags for laundry to be completed later. Instead, these bags are better suited to lighter layers that can easily fit into the cubes without over-filling them.

The Details: Ripstop polyurethane fabric | 14.4 ounces | Zipper

Best Utility

Scrubba portable wash bag.

The water-tight seal is perfect for containing soiled clothes while the flexible built-in washboard adds unparalleled utility.

You will need to pack laundry detergent to wash on the go.

While this laundry bag and portable washing machine might bring backpacking to mind, the ultra-light bag that packs down to a pocket-size square can be handy indoors, too. Designed with convenience and the environment in mind, Scrubba bags cut down on the amount of water needed to wash a few essential items at a time and without any electricity — helping you clean your clothes while you travel . The roll-top and buckle closure with an air valve ensures no dirty water sloshes out of the bag while you work the clothing against the washboard with full contact. The transparent window on the side of the bag also allows you to see any section of clothing that might need a bit of extra scrubbing. While the bag can simply serve to hold your dirty clothes apart from clean items until you get home, it is nice to know you can tackle a stain before it sets or reuse a soiled garment before you get home. To wash clothes using this laundry bag, you’ll need detergent; however, Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Liquidless Eco Sheets can be used for hand-washing clothing.

The Details: Polyether, TPU | 5.3 ounces | Roll-top with buckle and air valve

Tips for Buying Laundry Bags

Prioritize material.

Each type of material presents an advantage. Polyester and nylon are both lightweight synthetic fibers that are designed to endure wear and tear. Polyester will repel water while nylon will absorb water. Neither are breathable, but natural fibers such as cotton are. Pay attention to what material best suits your needs and style of travel.

Consider the bag’s features

Those who travel with delicate garments will likely want a breathable, protective bag that can fold or hang. Others who travel under intense weather conditions should look for a durable, waterproof option. Adventure enthusiasts will likely want a laundry bag that allows clothing to breathe and prevents bacterial growth between adrenaline-pumping activities. You'll also want a bag that has a secure closure that's easy to use and won't break even if you fully stuff the bag with dirty items.

Check for return policies and warranties

After investing in an excellent travel laundry bag, the last thing you want is to buy another one due to a defect or a short return period. Check the company policies to ensure you can get a refund should you need to exchange the laundry bag for a different option that better suits you. It is always worth noting the warranty as well as learning about free replacements and the corresponding time frame of availability.

Travel laundry bags are about so much more than containing dirty clothes while on the go or having clothes ready for washing machine drop-off. While the idea of protecting your clean clothes from germs and grime worn clothes might have collected, a separate laundry bag can also help prevent suitcases from developing an odor. Of course, laundry bags also help bring a certain level of organization to the suitcase, making it easier to see what clothing you have left to work with.

There are two ways to wash a travel laundry bag, but the method depends on the material the laundry bag is made of. Some synthetic fibers can withstand the heat of a hot cycle in the washing machine. Others might have to be washed on a cool cycle.

Some travel laundry bags are made from materials that are too delicate for the washing machine altogether. In this case, use a gentle detergent and cool water to soak and wash the bag in the sink. A solution made with mild soap and cool water can also be used to spot-clean laundry bags as needed too.

Look for specific directions when buying a laundry bag. Don't forget to double-check its tag before washing it too.

Similar to the methods of washing travel laundry bags, not all can handle the heat of a dryer. Some bags are designed to be used in a dryer, but far more must air dry. Again, consider this when buying a laundry bag and remember to properly care for whichever one you choose.

Our Favorite Travel Hack: Powdered Face Wash

By Mara Balagtas and Andrea Whittle

Our Favorite Travel Hack Powdered Face Wash

Every die-hard carry-on enthusiast knows the struggle of packing all the miniature lotions and potions you need (and you need them all) into a quart-sized plastic bag. Even if you manage to get it all in there, there's still a chance that your brand new bottle of serum or trusty tube of hand cream will leak onto everything else, creating a gloopy mess. Enter powdered face cleansers: Lightweight, spill-proof, and water activated (so you won't be missing out on that oh-so-satisfying foam), they've become our go-to travel hack. Plus, some have real exfoliating power, ideal for scrubbing away any post-airplane grime. Yet thanks to heightened TSA requirements at airports, anything over 12 ounces of powder is now subject to screening (read: it might get tossed), which is why we tried and tested all the best ones that meet the size limit. Here are our favorites.

How To Build Your Zero Waste Travel Toiletry Bag

How To Build Your Zero Waste Travel Toiletry Bag

8 Minute Read

This summer, I’m taking (2x) three-week trips abroad, and I’ll be packing everything I need into one carry-on bag. Yes! You heard right: 1 bag for THREE WEEKS! I’ve always hated checking luggage on a plane for fear of waiting in baggage claim for hours, or worse yet, having my bag lost. I also love the ease of walking off the plane with everything I need in-hand. And I appreciate not having to lug around a heavy-ass bag on cobble stone streets, down subway stairs, or through airport terminals. So today, I’m gonna share my zero waste essentials that are essential to my travel toiletry bag.

As I sat down to write this post, I looked at my toiletry bag, and questioned whether it was “good enough” to share with you. My first thought was: “I have a bunch of reusable plastic containers here. People are gonna shred me for this.” But the truth is, there are items in my travel toiletry bag that I had long before I made the decision to lower my waste, and those items should be used to their full potential.

I’d be such a hypocrite if I threw out my existing plastic containers and replaced them with metal or glass ones. My goal is not to share a sugar-coated version of myself. Instead, I wanna you to see that sustainable living is not about being perfect. It’s about being mindful and making conscious decisions about what we use. And to start things off, here’s my first tip…

The Best Way to get Zero Waste Toiletries is to Make Your Own:

Below are the plastic containers I use when prepping my travel toiletry bag. They’re perfect for things like deodorant, face wash, tooth powder, and cream. And by portioning out my own toiletries into refillable containers, I avoid buying travel-sized products that are limited to just a handful of uses.

Because these containers are so compact, they also keep you in check with TSA restrictions. Hello TSA approved toiletry bag!  Where have you been all my life?!?!

Image of four plastic containers Travel Sized Containers containing deodorant cream, face wash, skin cream, and tooth powder

Side note: A few years ago, my husband bought a huge pack of these containers. Even though they’re made of plastic, I intend on using them for as long as they live. Then, and only then, will I replace them with sustainable alternatives.

If you need refillable containers for your travel toiletry bag, here are several options that are plastic-free (or mostly plastic-free):

natural extracts travel wash bag

These are all the essentials that go in my travel toiletry bag:

This has everything I need and is light as a feather (well . . . almost! 😉 )

1. Shampoo Bar:

Not only do I use this when traveling, but I also use it at home. Of all my toiletries, shampoo bars are probably my absolute favorite since they eliminate the most waste. Truth is: there’s really no need to use liquid shampoo that comes in a plastic bottle when you can get the same level of cleanliness with a shampoo bar. When using the bar, you only need to condition your hair every 3-4 weeks with diluted apple cider vinegar (I know it sounds weird, but it works!). So if you’re traveling for less than a month, there’s no need to pack conditioner. Plus, since this ain’t no liquid , it’s the perfect addition to your TSA approved toiletry bag #yeyahhhhh!

natural extracts travel wash bag

2. Bar of Soap:

I use soap that’s either package-free from the grocery or minimally packaged from the farmer’s market. If the bar is too big for my travel container, I simply cut it down to size. You can also get an all-in-one bar that can be used for shampoo, shaving, and your body, which means you have one less thing to pack!

Image of a Bar of Soap being held in a person's hand, which is ideal for your travel toiletry bag

3. Lightweight Metal Container:

These are ideal for keeping soap separate from everything else in your travel toiletry bag. I have one that I got from Lush, and I use an old Altoids container for my other bar.

Image of a metal Altoids container with a bar of soap in it

Recently, I was speaking to a friend who said she uses  beeswax wraps to carry her soap when traveling. I thought it was such a great idea because the wraps can accommodate any size bar, are easy to clean in between uses, and wouldn’t leak once since the wax locks in moisture.

4. Bamboo Toothbrush:

I think this one is pretty self explanatory. Bamboo toothbrush = Good! Plastic Toothbrush = Bad! Here’s more on that .

Image of a WooBamboo Standard Toothbrush with green bristles

5. Face Wash:

I have been experimenting with DIY face wash, but have not found a winner just yet. Until then, I’ll continue to use Acure Facial Cleanser , which is made with organic ingredients, is paraben free, and isn’t tested on animals. I simply squeeze what I need into a travel container, and I’ve got the perfect sized face wash for my TSA approved toiletry bag.

6. Natural Deodorant:

I get my deodorant from Meow Meow Tweet. It comes in a cream form (rather than a deodorant stick), and is packaged in a glass jar. To lighten my load when traveling, I scoop the deodorant into a travel container, so I never have to worry about stinkin’ up the place.

Image of a jar of Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant Cream, an ideal option for your zero waste travel toiletry bag

If a deodorant stick is more your vibe, Gaia Guy makes the most cost effective, plastic-free deodorant stick I’ve tried . They also have  one for sensitive skin .

7. Tooth Powder:

Using tooth powder instead of tooth paste completely eliminates any worry about complying with TSA’s liquid restrictions. I make my own tooth powder with just 3 ingredients. It takes about 30 seconds to mix, but if DIY ain’t your thing, you can also buy pre-made tooth powder in a glass jar .

natural extracts travel wash bag

8. Face/Body Cream:

Meow Meow Tweet has a skin cream that’s perfect for both your body and face. Products that serve more than one function are ideal for putting together your travel toiletry bag because they free up space for other necessities.

Image of a jar of Meow Meow Tweet's Skin Cream

9. Toothbrush Case:

A few years ago, I bought a plastic toothbrush case because there weren’t any alternatives. Today, there are more sustainable options available (like  bamboo or silicone ), but I plan on using the one I have as long as it lasts me.

10. Lip Balm:

If you’re anything like me, you have at least 5 chapsticks lying around that you’ve had for YEARS! So truthfully, I probably won’t need lip balm for at least a decade.

If you’re in the market for a lip balm that’s vegan, small enough for traveling, and packaged in a compostable tube, you can try this one by Meow Meow Tweet. They also have an all-purpose Repair Balm that can be used for both your lips and body, which is especially useful for keeping your skin hydrated on long haul flights.

Image of a tube of Meow Meow Tweet's Repair Balm, ideal for your Zero Waste Toiletries

11. Compostable Dental Floss:

Mainstream dental floss is essentially made out of plastic ( you can learn more here ). I carry compostable dental floss  when traveling, and also use it at home. This one comes in a refillable container, which is compact enough to fit in your handbag for any sticky situations.

12. Non-toxic Sun Screen:

I have yet to find an affordable non-toxic sunscreen that doesn’t come in a plastic tube. I recently started using this tinted sunscreen by Badger , which is perfect for sensitive skin and doesn’t cause me to break out. Because it’s tinted, it also doubles as a cream foundation to even out my skin (at least I think that’s what it does). It comes in a 2.9 oz tube, so it also complies with TSA’s liquid restrictions.

I have found only one non-toxic sunscreen that comes in a tin container. Check it out here.

Image of a tin of All Good Zinc Sunscreen Butter

To learn more about non-toxic sunscreens, check out this post  for all the benefits and options.

13. Razor – TBD

I’m still on the lookout for a plastic-free razor that would qualify to go in a TSA approved toiletry bag. The metal safety razor I use would not be allowed on a plane since the blade is detachable. So until there’s an alternative that I can take in my carry-on, I’ll continue to use a disposable razor that I got a few years ago. In an attempt to preserve the blade, I earmark it only for traveling and since that’s the only time I ever use it anyway. If you have a plastic-free option that’s permitted on a plane, please share it in the comments below. I’d be eternally grateful and I know a lot of other readers would be too!

14. Makeup – Optional

I don’t usually pack makeup when traveling (since I don’t really wear it). However, if I need makeup for a wedding or event during my trip, I will pack a small container of coconut oil, which can be used for makeup removal and also doubles as a moisturizer. In addition, I pack a few  reusable cotton rounds  to get all that gunk off at the end of the night. If you are interested in sustainable makeup products, you can check out my blog post here.

I’d love to hear about what goes in your travel toiletry bag or if you have any hacks for converting your toiletries into a TSA approved toiletry bag…that can be a little tricky with all the new regulations!

Awesome post as always

Thanks Duane! I’m glad you like them 😀

I had not thought about my dental floss being plastic!

It’s amazing the things that plastic has snuck its way into. In the past, I used to dispose of things like floss and contact lenses in my toilet, not realizing that they were plastic. Now I shudder at the fact that I did that, but try not to be too hard on myself though, because I simply didn’t know at the time.

Shannon, What do you use in place of contacts? Glasses give me a headache, and I’m not a candidate for LASIK. Would love feedback! M

Hi Mary, I also used to wear contacts and glasses. I gratefully received Lasik 2 years ago and no longer need to wear lenses. I’m sorry that you are not a candidate for Lasik 🙁 . Unfortunately, I’m not sure that there is a plastic free alternative to glasses or contacts. If wearing contacts is your only option, perhaps you can portion out the amount of contact solution you need into a refillable container each time that you travel. In addition, if you get your contact lenses at a local doctor/shop, you can politely decline getting a new contact lens case each time you get a new prescription (a thorough cleaning of your existing case is perfectly sanitary). Lastly, make sure to never dispose of your contacts in the toilet or down the sink, as those will go straight to the ocean and our waterways. I’m sorry I don’t have a plastic-free alternative for your contacts, but hopefully the ideas above will help you to minimize your use of plastic within the realm of contact lenses. – Shannon

Love these useful tips!

Cassidy xXx http://www.theglamgreengirl.com

Just a heads up– I always travel with my safety razor (yes, even carry on!) and I have never been stopped. I didn’t realize it would ever be an issue. Might be risking losing it, but just wanted to share 🙂 Thanks for all the tips! Currently preparing for long term travel with just a carry on and am aiming for plastic free. I also like to bring my 1 oz face oil blend in a class dropper container. I’ve been having such trouble finding metal tins that aren’t on amazon, so I guess I’ll have to break the boycot and buy em. Any recommendations on a travel toiletry case?

That’s good to know…I’ve always been too scared to risk it for fear of losing my razor. Baggu has some great travel case sets and so does EarthHero .

Mountain Rose Herbs has refillable metal and glass containers in every size that would work beautifully for travel toiletries.

10 Natural Hair Kits to Pack On Your Upcoming Vacation

Made with curls in mind.

natural extracts travel wash bag

Editing down our beauty collection for travel—skin, body, and makeup included—can be a challenge. However, packing becomes even more strategic when you have natural hair . For most people, reducing their jumbo tub of conditioner and shampoos into tiny sample-sized jars isn't enough for combing through and keeping them styled and healthy while on vacation.

While the product options in the travel aisle have certainly upgraded over time, there's still a lot of improvement to make for TSA-friendly natural hair options (that don't include squeezing your wash day into bottles). Still, there are plenty of brands prioritizing natural hairstyles in their travel-sized lineups so you don't have to choose between your hair and vacation or—w orse— pay to check-in luggage with full-sized products.

To help make packing for your next trip a breeze, we scoured the shelves for the best TSA-friendly natural hair products to maximize your space and routine. Find our favorite picks, ahead.

Best on a Budget

This Mixed Chicks package is small but mighty. It comes with the brand's shampoo, deep conditioner, and leave-in conditioner, which is all you need for no-fuss styling on the go. The entire kit will only set you back ten bucks and you can toss it directly in your toiletry bag.

Best For Splurging

Adwoa Beauty's trial kit is the TSA-approved version of its cult-favorite baomint collection, which is designed to promote a healthy scalp and defined curls. Unlike most travel-sized hair kits that come with only a shampoo, conditioner, and styler, this set comes with  six  options for your hair including cleansers, a deep treatment, styling creams, and oil. The bottles are also recyclable and refillable so you can keep using them on the go.

Best For Working Out

Working out on vacation can be fun and energizing, but the build-up of sweat and products can leave your curls feeling dull. Uncle Funky’s Daughter brings versatility to their travel pack by focusing on eliminating smell, odor, and helping reinvigorate hair after a night out or working out at the gym. The kit includes a refresher spray, leave-in cream, curl definer, and hair polish to revive your hair after activity.

Best For Wash-and-Gos

Bread Beauty Supply packaged its four best-selling products in mini sizes so you can take the goods with you on the go. While we're fans of the entire Bread lineup, the mini hair cream is a standout because you can use it to define curls, or with a dense brush to slick your hair into a ponytail or bun.

Best Size Value

As I Am's travel lineup features six different products to keep your curls hydrated on the go. Each item in the kit (including co-wash, conditioner, gel, and cream stylers) comes in a generous  three-ounce bottle so you get more bang for your buck without TSA flagging your bag.

Best For Frizz

Brigeo's Farewell Frizz kit features a shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in spray with ingredients like rosehip, argan, and coconut oils to help detangle and smooth all hair types. It's perfect for keeping in your suitcase—or even your gym bag—when your hair needs a quick spruce-up.

Best For a Simple Routine

Rizos Curl's four-step travel kit is a small iteration of the brand's wash-day regimen, with shampoo, conditioner, curl-defining cream, and detangler. Each formula is packed with shea butter, moringa oil, and sunflower oil to keep your curls soft and shiny.

Best For Hair Repair

If you've been curious to try Sienna Naturals, the clean hair care line co-founded by Issa Rae, you can try it with this kit. The Mini Repair Ritual comes with the brand's shampoo, mask, and leave-in conditioner, all packed with powerful plant-based ingredients like baobab seed oil, honeysuckle extract, and coconut oil to make your strands feel stronger.

Best For Moisture

This kit is great for two things: If you primarily turn to conditioner style and detangle your hair,  and  if you want to dabble in all of Tracee Ellis Ross' Pattern formulas. Each nourishing formula is designed for various curl textures but can be cocktailed to your preference. They're especially clutch if you use larger amounts of conditioner when styling your hair at home so that you can layer them on from the hotel bathroom.

Best For Soothing Scalp

If you're struggling with an itchy or irritated scalp (or just got a new protective style), you'll want to scoop this Girl + Hair set, complete with an ACV rinse, leave-in conditioner, and scalp balm to cleanse, soothe, and moisturize your scalp. The formulas come with nozzle applicators so you can apply the product directly where you need it and don't have to sacrifice your scalp for your vacation style.

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!
