Why buying a sim card for Nepal

nepal travel sim

Stay connected and don't rely on WiFi in Kathmandu. WiFi in Nepal is pretty weak and not always reliable. Don't expect bars, restaurants, hotels and guesthouses all to offer free WiFi. Some do and the WiFi speed is ok, but mostly it is not!

Personally I simply can’t deal with slow internet anymore, so getting yourself a tourist sim card at Kathmandu Airport or ordering an e-sim card for Nepal on the internet will solve a lot problems. Traveltomtom recommends Airalo , Nomad or SimOptions for ordering an e-sim card for Nepal.

Having data on your phone is the best way to kill long bus rides, waiting in traffic, getting directions from Google Maps, staying in touch with friends, emergencies, check banking apps, etc. It makes life much easier and therefore traveling in Nepal much more fun.

Arriving at Kathmandu Airport

Be prepared for a little chaos when arriving at Kathmandu Airport. This is not the newest airport and everything is not that well organized. There is only one international arrival hall and baggage claim so that makes things easier. In the baggage hall you will already see advertisement for buying a tourist sim card for Nepal.

Where to buy a sim card at Kathmandu Airport

nepal travel sim

It might all seem a bit chaotic, but in the baggage hall, after you collect your luggage it is easy to find a Nepal sim card shop. In 2024 there are now sim card stores inside the terminal. You can not miss the signs, see the photo above.

nepal sim card kathmandu airport

When walking out of the baggage hall and you walk through the last customs bag check there is a sliding door to a covered outside area. On your right hand side you will see another Nepal Telecom and an Ncell shop next two each other.

There are only two mobile internet operators in Nepal: Ncell and Nepal Telecom. Nepal Telecom is sometimes also referred to as an NTC Namaste sim cards.

You will also need to bring Nepalese Rupees. USD and Euros are not accepted. However, the easiest way to pay for your new Nepal sim card is to use your international credit card. Visa and Mastercard are accepted in 2024.

Also great is that the sim card shops at Kathmandu Airport are open for every incoming international flight from early morning till after midnight.

Prices Nepal sim card at Kathmandu Airport

All the info and prices are updated in Janaury 2024. Below prices are in Nepalese Rupees and per January 2024: $1 USD = 133 NPR and 1 NPR = $0.75 USD.

Nepal Telecom

As mentioned before you can get a free Nepal Telecom sim card at Kathmandu Airport. Just go to the NTC counter, fill out the form and you will receive one. The sim card does not come with any credit though.

At Kathmandu Airport you can buy the following Nepal Telecom data packages:

  • 1 GB per day for 7 days + 60 minutes = 500 NRS - $3.70 USD
  • 1 GB per day for 28 days + 100 minutes = 1,200 NRS - $9 USD
  • 4.5 GB data for 28 days + 60 minutes = 700 NRS - $5.3 USD

Ncell Nepal has a little more variation plus they don’t limit your usage to 1 GB a day.

Best Nepal sim card at Kathmandu Airport in 2024

buy a sim card for nepal at kathmandu airport

It is hard to determine the best Nepal sim card at Kathmandu Airport as it totally depends on the length of your stay. If you for example stay 7 days only, then a Nepal Telecom sim card is $1 cheaper, but they limit your data usage to 1GB per day. Personally I would not want that restriction for that extra dollar.

For longer stays a Nepal Telecom (NTC Namaste) is significantly cheaper and is more value for money, but again it comes with a limited 1GB per day restriction.

In all honesty it is hard to decide which is the the best sim card for tourists at Kathmandu Airport in 2024!

ncell store kathmandu airport

Another important factor to determine what is the best sim card at Kathmandu Airport is to consider the mobile data network coverage maps for Nepal in 2024.

In some areas there is only a Nepal Telecom signal available, some areas only have an Ncell signal. For example I did the  Langtang Valley Trekking for 10 days  and there was only a Nepal Telecom signal available.

For a complete overview of the 4G/LTE network coverage in Nepal check out my article about the best sim card for Nepal in 2024 .

My advice for buying a sim card for Nepal in 2024 is to buy a sim card from both operators, especially if you have two sim card slots. But that is only for those who no matter what want to stay online.

Going offline is the charm of traveling to Nepal.

To avoid all the hassle of buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival Traveltomtom recommends using an e-sim card for your trip to Nepal in 2024.

Best e-sim cards for Nepal

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Nepal in 2024 is an e-sim card for Nepal. You can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks and no more swapping physical sim cards or visiting a sim card shop.

Keep in mind that the mobile internet operators in Nepal only provide physical prepaid sim cards for tourists, no e-sims. You can only order an e-sim card for Nepal on the internet.

You order an e-sim card for Nepal on the internet, you receive a QR code, scan it, follow the simple steps and within less than 2 minutes you have a Nepal e-sim card installed on your phone.

Upon arrival in Nepal it automatically connects you to an available network and you enjoy data on your phone pretty much when the plane lands.

Make sure your phone is e-sim compatible before ordering an e-sim card for Nepal.

airalo esim card plans for nepal 2024

Airalo is a trusted e-sim card provider that sells e-sims for pretty much every country in the world. Unfortunately for Nepal they only have 1 e-sim card plan for 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $9.5 USD

Click here for more info or to order a Nepal e-sim card via Airalo .

The above Patancell e-sim card is data-only and operates on the 4G/LTE mobile data network of Ncell.

simoptions esim card plans for nepal 2024

SimOptions is another reliable e-sim provider and Traveltomtom has used SimOptions in more than 50 countries around the world. SimOptions offers international e-sim cards that are valid in up to 141 countries, including Nepal:

  • 6 GB data for 8 days = $19.90 USD

nomad esim card plans for nepal 2024

Another reviewed and trusted e-sim provider is Nomad. Nomad sells e-sim card plans for Nepal from SingTel and they operate on the Ncell 4G/LTE network.

Here are the Nomad e-sim cards for Nepal in 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $6 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $12 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $15 USD

  • 15 GB data for 30 days = $28 USD
  • 20 GB data for 30 days = $36 USD

Click here for more info or to order an e-sim card for Nepal via Nomad .

With an e-sim card you keep your own phone number from home. All the e-sim cards for Nepal you order on the internet are data-only.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible then you need to order a physical prepaid sim card for Nepal on the internet. Order one online and get it delivered to your home address before your trip. Have a look at ordering an international sim card for Nepal online .

Visa on arrival Kathmandu Airport

visa on arrival kathmandu airport

If you are eligible for a visa on arrival then there is nothing to worry about because as soon as you land you will be directed to one of the many visa machines. You fill out all the required information, print out your visa entry receipt and head to the cashier.

Depending on the length of your stay you pay between $25 USD and $100 USD. You can pay in Euros too. There is an ATM next to the cashier, but it charges $5 USD extra to withdraw Nepalese Rupees.

On the visa entry receipt they already mention that a Nepal sim card is available after the custom counter! :)

How to get from Kathmandu Airport to the city

Nepal is one of the cheapest countries in the world to travel and therefore there is no need to tell you all the possible ways to get to the city. It is really simple: just grab a taxi. The taxis in Kathmandu all have a meter but as you can guess it is hard to find one who wants to use that meter. Ask around you might be lucky!

A normal fair from KTM airport to Thamel (the popular tourist district) is around 600 - 900 NRS ($5 - $8).

There's no Uber yet in Nepal, but there are some alternatives. Bike sharing apps are popular. Those are handy, but not from and to the airport of course. Download Tootle and Pathao for bike sharing apps and Sarathi for taxis, but this last one doesn't really work.

Don't forget to check out the Kathmandu food tour and get to try the best Nepal street food. Or check here all my Nepal travel blogs .

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Nepal in 2024

nepal travel sim

If you are planning a trip to Nepal, having a reliable SIM card is essential. Access to the internet while traveling can greatly enhance your experience by helping you navigate new cities, discover the best restaurants, find directions to your accommodation, book taxis, and share your adventures with loved ones through photos.

While roaming is an option, the costs can quickly accumulate, especially when traveling internationally. Therefore, we highly recommend getting either an eSIM or a local SIM card to access local phone rates. Luckily, obtaining either of these options in Nepal is incredibly straightforward, but it’s beneficial to know which one suits your needs best.

This comprehensive guide aims to provide you with all the information you need to know about purchasing a SIM card in Nepal, including current pricing and the absolute best option for you to consider.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in nepal for tourists.

The best sim card in Nepal is the Ncell Home & Away prepaid sim card. Fortunately, both sim card providers offer extremely cheap mobile data for travellers visiting Nepal.

Ncell’s package is a bit cheaper than Nepal Telecom and their coverage is better. This makes recommending Ncell an easy choice. That said, if you are heading into the mountains then you shouldn’t expect very good coverage with either mobile operator.

If you prefer the convenience of an eSim and don’t require much data, Airalo’s Nepal eSim is an option as well. It uses the Ncell network. Bear in mind that it costs a lot more per GB than a local sim card.

Nepal Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Nepal costs 599 NPR in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Nepal will cost $9.50 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Nepal which includes 1GB of data which is valid for 7 days and costs $9.50 USD.

How to Get a Sim Card in Nepal

Identify mobile providers: Ncell, Nepal Telecom and are your best options in Nepal.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Nepal

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Nepal at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Nepal then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Nepal have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Ncell, Nepal Telecom and . Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Nepal are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Nepal with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Nepal. The Airalo Nepal eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $9.50 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Nepal without having to venture outside.

Airalo Nepal

Our preferred eSim provider in Nepal is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Nepal and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Nepal eSim uses the Ncell network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Ncell networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Nepal.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Nepal eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $9.50 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 1GB data plan for $9.50 USD which is valid for 7 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Nepal

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Nepal eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Nepal eSim uses the Nepal Telecomnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Nepal

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Nepal eSim:

6GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $44 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is incorporated into the hardware of a device, like a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, there is no need to physically insert or remove an eSIM.

Instead, the eSIM is built-in and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This allows users to easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the hassle of swapping SIM cards.

eSIM technology offers convenience, flexibility, and user-friendliness, particularly for individuals who frequently change mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the necessity of purchasing and inserting physical SIM cards, making it much more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users simply need to scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually input the activation details. Once activated, the device can access voice calls, data, and messaging services just like with a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are several advantages to using an eSIM:

– Convenience: With an eSIM, you can easily switch between mobile networks or plans without physically inserting or removing a SIM card. This is especially beneficial for travelers who frequently switch networks or use local SIM cards.

– Dual SIM functionality: An eSIM allows you to have two active mobile numbers on one device, making it useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines.

– Space-saving: Since eSIMs are embedded within the device, the need for a physical SIM card slot is eliminated. This creates extra space for components or allows manufacturers to make smaller devices.

– Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done wirelessly with eSIMs. This means you can easily activate or switch to a new plan without requiring a physical SIM card or visiting a store.

– Future-proofing: As eSIM technology becomes more popular, more mobile networks and service providers are offering support for eSIMs. By using an eSIM-compatible device, you can take advantage of new services and offerings as they become available.

Overall, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it an appealing choice for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

SIM Cards & Networks – A Guide for Travellers to Nepal

By Suraj Katwal

Updated On Mar 2, 2024

If you are traveling to Nepal then you’ll find that mobile and sim cards can be very different from your current situation at home town. The good news is that here you are going to learn everything about sim cards and network and how it works before your trip.

Here is also a helpful guide for travelers to buy SIM cards in Nepal. Before that, you should also read our Getting Around Nepal guide.

Since communication is one of the integral parts of life, you need a network on your phone even when you are in a foreign land. It is difficult for a traveler to stay in contact while relying on an international roaming service because the roaming charges are expensive.

The minute you arrive in Nepal, you would probably want to pull out your phone and either make a call to your home or drop a post on your social media account.

Doing so using your national telecom provider’s SIM can go heavy on your pocket and some of them may not even have roaming service.

So, when you visit Nepal , you are recommended to purchase a SIM card available in Nepal for a reasonable networking service. It reduces several challenges of staying connected in foreign countries.

SIM Cards in Nepal

Mobile Service Providers in Nepal

Nepal has the top three mobile service providers currently. They are NTC, Ncell, and Smartcell. All of them are huge mobile service providers in Nepal with thousands of subscribers.

1. Nepal Telecom SIM (NTC SIM)

Nepal Telecom

Nepal Telecom (NT) , a state-owned telecommunication company in Nepal, provides NTC SIM. NTC SIM came into effect 17 years ago, and since then, the services it provides have transformed a lot with time.

NTC has 4G coverage around various corners of Nepal. NT is even preparing to introduce a 5G network in Nepal. The 5G service project of Nepal Telecom is expected to produce some fruitful results soon.

The voice call quality of NTC is quite commendable as it works fine at high altitudes too. The same goes for the 4G network service. NT provides various 4G data packages at incredible prices.

Nepal Telecom Prepaid SIM Card for Tourists

NTC prepaid SIM cards for tourists are cost-effective and have several benefits. To purchase NTC SIM, visit the NTC counter at TIA and fill out the registration form.

Below is the price range of data of NTC SIM cards that includes the following services.

Moreover, you can buy other voice and data packages by dialing *1415#.

2. Ncell SIM

Ncell

Ncell Axiata Limited , the first private telecommunication company in Nepal provides Ncell SIM. Besides its transition to a public company from private, a lot has transformed over the 17 years of its establishment.

3. Smartcell SIM

Smartcell

Smartcell, the third-largest telecommunication company in Nepal, provides Smartcell SIM. The company was founded in 2008 and had been providing great mobile service since then.

Smartcell SIM, unfortunately, does not have large coverage in Nepal like NTC. It has extended service to around 45 districts, but its mobile internet service is remarkably fast.

Among the 45 districts, Smartcell offers 4G network services in 19 districts and 2G network services in 26 districts. Also, Smartcell does not offer a 3G service.

The 19 districts include major cities like Kathmandu , Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Nawalparasi, Chitwan, Siraha, Kaski, Dang,  Kavre, Kailali, Banke, Bardiya, Parsa, Kanchanpur, Saptari, Jhapa, Morang, Dhanusa, and Sunsari.

If you are visiting these places, you can definitely go for the Smartcell SIM as it is affordable and has good connectivity.

A regular Smartcell SIM costs only Rs. 99. On the purchase of a Smartcell SIM, you get a main balance of Rs. 90 balance with a Data volume of 200 MB, a 10-minute voice call, and an SMS pack valid for a month.

Smartcell has a great range of data packages to offer its customers.

Buying SIM card in Nepal

Most of you may be wondering how to buy a sim card in Nepal. Well, it is a valid curiosity since you are unfamiliar with the places and outlets that sell SIM cards in Nepal.

Like in most countries, buying a sim card is easier for foreigners due to its availability at the airport . The airport may seem crowded, and you may think it will be difficult to find the purchase outlet, but it is quite visible from the arrival gate.

There are several outlets at Tribhuvan International Airport where you can purchase Nepali SIM Cards as soon as you arrive.

To purchase a SIM card in Nepal, you have to fulfill some requirements. You have to fill out a registration form and submit some documents.

You need to provide a photocopy of your passport, which you can get from the same outlet. Then, you need to show your arrival Visa.

Similarly, you need to provide one passport-size photo. Don’t worry if you don’t have one. The outlet has arrangements to provide urgent photos on the spot. Indian citizens can provide either a voter card or an Embassy card instead of a passport.

IMEI registration in Nepal

NTA (Nepal Telecommunication Authority), the telecommunication regulatory body of Nepal provides a service for the online registration of mobile phones.

This registration process is known as IMEI registration, introduced to reduce illegal phone operations and help track lost phones.

IMEI registration is seen as a productive medium to launch and sell mobile phones officially. Thousands of mobile phones have been registered till now. Not only domestic, but people can also register foreign mobile phones via IMEI registration.

IMEI registration is mandatory in Nepal since unregistered phones are not going to work on Nepal’s Mobile network. After registering your mobile phone, you will be able to use Nepal’s official channels to communicate.

If you intend to buy mobile phones in Nepal, check if the mobile phones are IMEI registered or not. Don’t fall for the grey market, or you’ll get scammed.

If you want to do online IMEI registration in Nepal, follow these steps:

  • Visit the NTA’s web portal .
  • Click on Sign up to register.
  • Click on New importer or Individual application.
  • Click on New register.
  • Fill the empty boxes with the details of your phone, such as Brand name, mobile number, IMEI/ ESN / MEID number, etc.
  • Upload your ID photo (should be less than 3 MB)

IMEI registration has several benefits as you can save your IMEI number to track or block your already registered mobile phones via this web portal. You will be able to make secure payments via mobile.

Phones from a foreign land can also be registered in your own name. This feature will help you to track your phone in case of theft or misplacement.

Similarly, the contract phones or fake lost phones imported from abroad may not even work in Nepal with the compulsion of IMEI registration.

How to get Nepal SIM Card for Indian Citizens?

Getting a SIM card in Nepal as an Indian citizen is a relatively simple process, and can be completed in just a few steps. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Choose a mobile service provider: Nepal has a few mobile service providers among them Nepal Telecom (NTC), Ncell, and Smart Telecom are popular. You can check the coverage area, call cost, and data cost and get the one that suits your needs.
  • Prepare your documents: You need photos, a passport, or an aadhar card as proof of identity and address. Prepare your documents to get a Nepali SIM card.
  • Visit a mobile service provider outlet: Visit the nearest SIM card provider outlets in Nepal and ask staff to fill up the process and complete the necessary paperwork.
  • Activate your SIM card: Once you have obtained your SIM card, follow the instructions from the packaging paper to activate your temporary SIM card. It may take time to get activated, so wait for a few hours.

Overall, getting a SIM card for Indian Citizen is pretty straightforward, and it can be completed within a few steps. The agent in the SIM shop will process your documents within a few minutes.

How to make 4G in NTC?

To make 4G in NTC, you will need to first upgrade your current phone if it’s not a 4G phone. Dial *444# and activate your SIM to 4G/LTE service. Once activated, you should be able to access the 4G network.

How to check registered name of the SIM Card NCELL?

You can check the registered name of your NCELL SIM card by visiting the nearest NCELL service center with the required documents. You can also check the registered name of your SIM card by dialing the NCELL *9966# code.

How to check phone number in NTC SIM?

You can check your phone number on your NTC SIM card by dialing *9# and pressing the send key. You will see your phone number.

Which Indian mobile network works in Nepal?

Indian mobile networks such as Jio, and Airtel can work in Nepal if data roaming is activated but it is best to avoid it and get a local SIM card to get more cost-effective solutions.

Lastly, SIM cards are easily available in local shops in Nepal. But, if you don’t want to waste time searching for it, you can choose to buy SIM cards at Tribhuvan International Airport.

Go to the specific outlets with the logo of the telecom company near the gate of arrival, and purchase the SIM card.

If you have any queries regarding mobile networks in Nepal and IMEI registration in Nepal, write them down in the comment section below. I will try to make it clear to you.

Namaste I’ve been coming to Nepal for many years but for first time I will purchase NTC SIM card. Silly question- the number of phone minutes I’m assuming it’s to a mobile? (I live in Scotland) thank you Julie

Hi Julie, I didn’t understand your question. Thanks

I am presuming what she is asking is lets say the first line which indicates the said “60 minutes” which is included, is it to mobile calls? @Julie I am throwing a wild guess here but It should be to both mobiles and landlines…. but thats what I am guessing correct me if I’m wrong.

Hi Suraj is esim available for Nepal Telecom Prepaid SIM Card for Tourists?

Nepal SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Dec 3, 2023 | Asia , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Nepal soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Nepal SIM card .

Fortunately, Asia is one of the best places where you can buy a SIM card easily. You should be able to find a cheap SIM card pretty much anywhere in Asia. In fact, most data packages are affordable, which makes the whole thing easier!

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Nepal in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Nepal. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Nepali – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Nepal.

Himalaya Mountains, Nepal

Best SIM Cards In Nepal

If you’re traveling in Nepal, we recommend using a SIM card from Nepal Telecom, Ncell, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Nepal

You can either buy a Nepal prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asia prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Nepal Telecom, and Ncell.

Mountain view in Kathmandu, Nepal

Nepal Telecom SIM Cards

Nepal Telecom offers two different types of data plans:

  • 35 GB, valid for 60 days for Rs 1,600 ($12.22)
  • 70 GB, valid for 120 days for Rs 3,000 ($22.92)

Ncell SIM Cards

Ncell has four relevant prepaid plans available:

  • 3 GB, valid for 7 days for Rs 98 ($0.75)
  • 7 GB, valid for 28 days for Rs 249 ($1.90)
  • 12 GB, valid for 28 days for Rs 399 ($3.04)
  • 20 GB, valid for 28 days for Rs 499 ($3.80)

Overall, we think Ncell is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Nepal Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the PanAsia SIM card works in 15 countries and gives you 4 GB of data for 8 days. Nepal is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer one package that covers Nepal:

  • 1 GB, valid for 14 days for $49.90

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Nepal or, if you’re traveling to multiple countries, an eSIM plan for Asia.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Nepal

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Nepal.

Curious? Learn more about eSIMs for travelers on eSIM Roamers .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo . Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs for Nepal.

Airalo Nepal

If you want to buy an eSIM for Nepal, you could purchase one on Airalo . I’ve been using Airalo for several months, and it works fine.

Here is the option available for Nepal :

  • Patancell: 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9.50

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Nepal

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Nepal or even an eSIM for your travels in Nepal is pretty straightforward.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Asia without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase an Asia plan.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Nepal if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

You need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Most modern smartphones, including popular brands like Apple, Samsung, Google, and OnePlus, are compatible with Nepal SIM cards. Additionally, older models and feature phones with support for the required frequency bands should work fine as well.

It's important to ensure that your phone supports the frequency bands used by the mobile networks in Nepal to ensure optimal coverage and performance. You can usually find this information in your phone's specifications or by checking with the manufacturer.

If you're unsure about your phone's compatibility, you can contact the Nepal SIM card provider or consult with a local retailer to get more specific information based on your phone model.

Can I make phone calls and send messages with my Holafly eSIM?

The Nepal eSIM only allows you to use mobile data. It does not include a local phone number for mobile calls or messages. You can still make calls using apps like WhatsApp.

Which devices work with the eSIM card?

You can check if your smartphone is eSIM compatible here.

When will I receive my eSIM?

Once you purchase an eSIM, you will receive it immediately to your email address. You then just need to scan the QR code to activate the SIM. Note that no refunds can be made once you purchase your eSIM. See our refund policy for more information.

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

You don’t need to do anything to keep your WhatsApp number. You’ll automatically keep your number, contacts and conversations.

How quick is the Holafly eSIM?

The Holafly eSIM offers maximum speed coverage (4GLTE). But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the Holafly eSIM.

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM’s QR code?

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at [email protected] or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

Yes, you can do so by logging into your HolaflyCenter on the Holafly website. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you’ve made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

Can I share data with other devices?

No, the eSIM for Nepal does not allow you to share data.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On yor cell phone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. Your phone will allow you to assign a specific name to this data plan. You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan and turn on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code and take it with you on your vacation just in case. Remember that you need internet access to activate the eSIM. Set up is quick and you will be able to enjoy your data plan right away.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original one and a new one. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the second device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSim at the same time. Choose the Sim card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your Sim card activated, your network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund. Once the refund is approved, you will receive the money on to the same account with which you made the payment. This process can take between 5 to 10 business days. Internet & SIM Card in Nepal

The cellular or mobile coverage is one of the chief drivers of the internet connectivity and its usage. Cyber cafes used to be important sources of internet access for Nepalese people as well as foreign visitors few years back, but these cafes are not very much popular in recent times. The cheapest ISP in Nepal as of 2020 is NT FTTH and NT ADSL. While the former is very quick and available in certain areas only, the latter one is comparatively slower and available almost everywhere.

SIM Card In Nepal

It is a smart idea to pick up a local SIM card when you are in Nepal so that you remain connected with your family and friends back home. You will require an unlocked phone set, tablet or iPad and of course a pre-paid SIM to make calls or connect to internet. NTC and NCell are the two main carriers that provide telephone as well as mobile internet services. NTC is considered to be a bit slower at specific areas but has greater coverage in the mountains. Likewise, NCell is faster and easier to set up for foreign travelers.

If you are planning to trek in Nepal, it is advisable to consider an NTC SIM card, which may not be as widely available as with NCell, but it isn’t too hard to find one either! It is possible to buy SIM cards when you arrive at the International Airport from either of the two main vendors or ask your hotel to assist you in getting one. To purchase a SIM card, you need to provide one passport-sized photo and your physical passport. The retailer will make a photocopy of your passport identity page and Nepalese visa after which you will need to fill out a short form. Once the process is complete, your card will be activated immediately whereupon you need to top up or recharge your card with as much credit as you need.

Convenience of Using eSIM

Cost savings with esim, compatibility with multiple devices, how to activate esim for use in nepal, check device compatibility, purchase and activation process.

  • I complete the purchase process on the provider’s website, where I’m often asked to provide my device details.
  • The provider then emails me a QR code, which is key to activating the eSIM on my device.
  • I open my phone’s cellular settings and select the option to add a cellular plan, then scan the QR code provided.
  • After a few moments, the eSIM activates, and I can connect to a local network in Nepal.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Ensure your device has an internet connection, either via WiFi or another cellular data plan, during the activation process. The eSIM won’t activate without it.
  • If the QR code doesn’t seem to work, I double-check to ensure it hasn’t been used. QR codes for eSIM can typically be used only once.
  • Restarting my device often resolves any connectivity issues after the eSIM activation.
  • In cases where my device doesn’t connect to the local network automatically, manually selecting a network from the settings menu usually fixes the problem.
