Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.
Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.
During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.
MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. While there, singles can participate in fun-filled evening activities like a Champagne Sunset Cruise or a glow paddleboarding excursion in the lagoon, then attend the lively Luna Libre Party and the lighthouse show.

Holland America Line

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.
Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.
For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

These solo accommodations include interior rooms, virtual balcony staterooms and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.
If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. If you're sailing in the Caribbean, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and chat with other passengers at the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Single guests can also book other stateroom or suite categories with single supplements starting at 50% of the double occupancy price.
The line's three intimate yacht-style cruise ships – World Navigator, World Traveller and the new World Voyager, whose inaugural season begins in Antarctica in November 2023 – are all-inclusive . Meals at all the dining venues, premium beverages and wines, gratuities, culturally immersive excursions, and more are included in the fare. With fewer than 200 guests on board, there's an atmosphere of conviviality on these ships – especially when exploring remote destinations with like-minded and adventurous travelers during expeditions in Antarctica and the Arctic.

- Solo travellers get peace when it comes to safety
- Countless activities and excursions to keep you busy
If you’re looking for your next adventure, embarking on a solo travellers cruise on one of these top five solo cruises could be where it all starts!
Solo supplements explained
Embarking on a cruise on your own is typically more expensive (per person) than sharing your cabin with a friend.
This is because cruise lines build their cabins assuming two people will share them.
Instead of sharing the cost of a cabin with another traveller, a Solo Traveller pays a supplement for Solo use.
1. Oceania Cruises

- Suitable for: singles seeking small vessel cruises which promise great food and indulgent culinary experiences.
- Solo perks: Solo staterooms and a program of solo-cruiser gatherings.
- Single supplements: Yes, but lower on average than other cruise lines.

Whichever one of Holland America’s cruises has your name on it, the cruise line prides itself on catering for every type of solo traveller, giving you the freedom to choose your own adventure day by day.
There are a whole host of activities on offer, from competitive sports challenges and trivia nights, to lectures and cooking demonstrations to help you recalibrate and capitalise on your ‘me’ time.
- Suitable for: 50+ singles looking for premium experience at a mid-range price point.
- Solo perks: the Singles Partner Program, where you share a cabin with another passenger of the same gender and pay a per-person double occupancy rate.
- Single supplements: yes, except for Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam ships which offer solo cabins priced for one.
Elegant French cruise line Ponant carries a maximum of 64 passengers in its single, shared, or personal double cabins.
During small group excursions and themed get-togethers, meeting and mingling with fellow passengers is effortless. The crew are attentive, and the food and wine, which includes French classics, is top notch. If you’re hoping to be inspired, you're spoilt for choice, with exceptional destinations including the Arctic, Mediterranean and Carribean.
- Suitable for: well-travelled over 50s looking for a 5-star setting.
- Solo perks: small boat cruises make for a more intimate cruising experience.
- Single supplements: single supplement waived on certain departures.
4. Norwegian Cruise Line
Visit bucket-list worthy destinations with Norwegian Cruise Line , the first cruise line to fit out its ships for singles cruises.

And, if you’re lucky enough to score a Solo Balcony room, you’ll be treated to a first-class view from your own private balcony.
- Suitable for: the young and the young at heart. Some ships host a pub crawl, and there’s always a Friends of Dorothy happy hour.
- Solo perks: private key card access to the sociable Studio Lounge, a dedicate space for Studio guests.

How to prepare for your cruise
Before you and your set sail on a cruise of a lifetime there are a few things you’ll need to take care of:
- Make sure you’ve packed all the essentials including your travel documentation , passports and visas
- Check out your shore excursions and prebook if you can,
- Take out travel insurance ,
- Notify your bank that you’ll be travelling overseas.
Why do I need travel insurance
Travelling solo gives you the freedom and flexibility to travel however you want. However, it also means you won’t have someone you know with you to help in an emergency situation. This is why travel insurance is such an essential part of your next singles cruise.
Travel insurance that covers cruises will protect your luggage on board, provide cancellation cover if the unexpected happens and cover emergency and medical expenses. Most importantly though, it gives you peace of mind, so that you can enjoy your trip without worrying about the ‘what ifs’.
Wherever your next cruise adventure takes you, be sure to pack travel insurance . RACV offers a 3 international Travel Insurance plans so you can choose the level that suits your travel plans. All plans include access to 24/7 overseas emergency assistance and international travel insurance policies to suit every solo traveller, offering you the security and insurance cover you need wherever you are heading. Solo cruise tips: Best value cruise lines for solo travellers
Cruising is becoming more popular for solo travellers - and there's no need to pay an expensive single supplement if you know where, and when, to look.

New ‘entitled’ cruise balcony trend crew want stopped
The big band strikes up in the Queen’s ballroom on board Cunard’s Queen Mary 2. A dance host, one of Cunard’s white dinner jacket-wearing dancers, proffers his hand to a woman sitting solo. She demurs at first but shyly stands, then together with her dance partner elegantly floats across the dancefloor. There’s a gleam in her eye, lost in the moment doing the foxtrot. On this ship of 2500 passengers, she is having the most fun.
There’s a lot to love about solo sailing. On Cunard , independent cruisers might start the day with a Sailing Solo coffee meet-up, then take a ballroom dancing lesson before heading out to explore a port at their own pace. Upon returning to the ship, one might decide to attend a drinks get-together and take a seat at a communal table or choose to dine alone and take in a show. That’s the true beauty of solo cruising – the choice is all yours.
Cruise lines know how to cater for independent travellers. In 2010, Norwegian Cruise Line was a pioneer in offering purpose-built solo cabins together with a dedicated common area known as the Studio Lounge. Seven of NCL’s ships, including the new Norwegian Prima, offer these studio rooms.
Sister brand Oceania Cruises has added 56 solo staterooms across four of its ships this year, including Regatta, which will be in Australian waters soon.
And thankfully the days of solo cruisers paying blanket supplements to have a cabin designed for two to themselves are numbered, especially on small-ship voyages.
Cruise Traveller product manager Samantha Patton says solo prices are included in almost all of their packaged products to remove any guesswork for the increasing number of solo guests. “Most cruise lines in our small-ship sphere have some solo-traveller specials at one time or another. For example, the ship Heritage Adventurer, from Heritage Expeditions , has cabins just for solo travellers that are priced very fairly,” Samantha says.
Her advice on getting a good deal? Get in early.
“Cruise lines like Ponant always have no-single-supplement offers and savings of up to 30 per cent when each cruise is released for sale. The sooner you book, the better the saving, as solo cabins sell out quickly.”
On Ponant, a welcome cocktail party is held for all solo travellers to mingle, and as they are small luxury ships with limited capacities, solo travellers can easily befriend other travellers during their voyage if they wish to.
Emerald Cruises offers dedicated solo travellers’ suites, no single supplements and solo discounts on top balcony suites. Tauck has waived the single supplement entirely on all its Category 1 European riverboat cabins in 2023. There are nearly 250 departures to choose from, so you get to pick the exact itinerary to suit your own interests.

The ultimate guide to solo cruising: Deals and best lines
Solo cruising is on the rise – research shows 45 per cent of Australians are looking for singles travel this year.
Cruise lines are racing to put out the best offers to lure solo cruisers. This means there are plenty of hot deals and lots to know for those looking for solo cruises.
Traditionally the barrier to solo cruising has been the steep costs of one person having to pay for a double cabin. However, many cruise lines are now putting out deals that reduce or even eliminate the single supplement. This makes solo cruises much more affordable.
Furthermore, some cruise ships have now fitted solo cabins. Solo guests can forget about wrestling with the supplement and just book a solo cabin.
Beyond this, some cruise lines have special lounges or activities for meeting other solo travellers. Cruise lines are fast realising the new wave of solo cruisers need to be catered for.
Norwegian Cruise Line, who put a strong emphasis on catering for solo travellers, said they had been paying attention to research that was highlighting the rise of the single traveller.
Solo travellers not alone
Skyscanner research says 45% of Australians are interested in escaping solo in 2023. And 44% cite a solo travel trip as important for their wellness.
Ben Angell, VP and Managing Director, Norwegian Cruise Line APAC says: “Cruising solo offers the ideal balance of adventure, independence, safety and security, with guests able to explore ports alone or join excursions with a community of like-minded people.
“NCL has always been at the forefront of solo cruising, and our new Prima Class ships are continuing to innovate and provide opportunities and experiences tailored to meet the needs of this growing guest sector.”
Cruise Passenger also recently covered the rise of solo cruising for women , another significant industry trend.

Onboard networking: Celebrity has added new, dedicated events for solo travellers to their programs. This includes a gathering and dinner hosted by the activity team. Guests can check the time in their Celebrity App or Celebrity Today daily program and head for the Sky Lounge (on Millennium and Solstice-series ships). The friendly Activity Team will help break the ice. There will also be a special solos’ table at dinner that night, and an un-hosted solos’ table every night thereafter. Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean has redesigned some of its ships to include solo cabins, which are now available in two categories: a superior ocean view with access to the balcony and a studio interior room with a virtual view. Unlike many other cruise lines, the beds provided in the solo cabins are in full size.
Solo cabins don’t always have balconies. Instead, you may book an interior solo room with a virtual balcony, which is a digital window that displays ocean views.
For cruises to and from Australia, Royal Caribbean offers single staterooms on Ovation of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, and Radiance of the Seas.
Singles-friendly activities such as cooking classes, wine tastings, and scuba diving training are available. For meals, passengers cruising alone can also request to either go solo for some “me” time, or request to join a larger group.
Norwegian Cruise Line
NCL launched its first solo cabins on board Norwegian Epic in 2010. Today the cruise line offers dedicated solo accommodation options on nine ships , including its new Prima class vessels, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva .
NCL’s solo Studios are cleverly designed to maximise storage space. All solo accommodation centred around the Studio Lounge. It includes a dedicated bar and TV area where solo travellers can meet and mingle.
NCL is the only cruise line to offer an exclusive lounge for solo cruisers keen to meet and relax with their fellow adventurers. Accessible by a dedicated key card, Studio Lounge provides a home-away-from home for solo guests who can unwind in a laidback environment offering complimentary refreshments, room service and a big-screen TV to watch movies with neighbouring Studio accommodation travellers.
Each NCL sailing also includes social activities coordinated by cruise staff such as hosted singles meet-ups, and opportunities to get together with other solo travellers to attend Broadway-style shows, participate in game shows, have a laugh at comedy clubs, join fitness classes or get involved in fun-filled outdoor activities such as sky-high slides, racetracks, mini-golf, and casinos, making it easy to mingle and make memories with new friends on board.
Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages has been a heavy promoter of solo travel in its early years as a cruise line.
The cruise line offers many activities for solos, including a “grog walk” (pub crawl) through all the different bars on the ship. At the end of the walk diners will get to shared table restaurant Gunbae, where they will gather around and dine together.
The cruise line consolidated this attitude by removing the single supplement on a range of 2023 European cruises.
Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises offers special rates for single voyages, without the supplement. Special cabins for solo travellers aren’t currently available aboard Princess ships.
The line also hosts singles nights, including evening cocktail parties and other singles events. You can also join group events, like yoga, cooking classes or even wine tastings.
Oceania Cruises
Oceania Cruises has witnessed a post-pandemic boom rise in the demand for solo travel. They are currently offering a total of 62 staterooms dedicated to solo travellers across its fleet of small, luxurious ships. Six more are scheduled to be added by 2025.
This includes six new concierge level veranda staterooms dedicated to solo travellers on the Vista . The ship offers the largest standard staterooms at sea at more than 26 square metres.
There are also 56 staterooms for solo travellers available across Oceania Cruises’ four Regatta Class ships. Each debuted 14 Solo Oceanview Staterooms in 2022.
Vista’s sister ship, Allura , launches in 2025.Her inaugural season on sale now. She will also have six staterooms dedicated to solo travellers .
For solo travellers, Cunard has redesigned the Queen Mary 2 to add 15 staterooms. The spaces were carved out from the former art gallery and casino. The oceanview cabins are spacious with a single bed, a sitting area, a writing desk, an ensuite bathroom with a shower and a mini-fridge. Solo cabins are also available onboard Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth .
Cunard is best known for its gala nights where you will be invited via formal invitation delivered to your stateroom. Tthe dress code is always revealed in advance of sailing so you can prepare.
Seabourn has special staterooms that are luxurious and intimate designed for sophisticated solo travellers, according to its website.
One of the highlights of solo travelling with Seabourn is the Retreat. It is a serene area of the ship, located in a distinctive flower-shaped canopy. The “single’s sanctuary” is ringed with 15 private cabanas designed as individual luxury living rooms. Inside, is a large HD flat-screen TV and a refrigerator stocked with your selection of drinks.
A Spa Treatment Cabana is also available for guests to enjoy personalised spa services, subject to availability.
The beauty of booking a solo cabin with Ponant is that the ships are luxurious. There are at least 92 staterooms and suites, and most have balcony access. So for solo travellers looking for a more intimate cruising experience, Ponant is a good choice.
If you are looking to meet nature-loving and adventurous solo travellers, you can join the National Geographic excursions. You will be guided by professionals and a team of Nat Geo specialists.
P&O Cruises Australia
P&O Cruises Australia has several ships with solo staterooms. However, the availability of interior, oceanview and balcony cabins are limited and will depend on the ship you have selected. Arcadia has the biggest interior and balcony cabins. In selected cruises, P&O ships have a secluded area called The Oasis.
Other P&O ships with solo cabins include Brittania, Azura, Ventura, Iona, and Oriana. Aurora was remodelled in 2019 to become an adults-only ship.
Solo staterooms on P&O Cruises are a bit smaller compared to double-occupancy cabins but offer the same amenities. Please also take note that solo cabins only have showers and single beds.
Viking Cruises
All Viking ships are adults-only so solo travellers are a major part of the demographics onboard.
Viking organises specific solo and single activities such as art performances, cooking lessons and lectures. But on shore, the line offers museum visits with other solo travellers.
Holland America Line
Holland America Line offers the Single Traveller’s Program with events such as dance classes, cocktail parties and mixers. There are more onboard activities and excursions that are ideal for singles who want to meet other people.
The staterooms on Nieuw Statendam or Koningsdam are larger compared to other ship. They are equipped with full-sized bed, ensuite bathroom and ocean views.
Activities for solo travellers are available. Just explore the Explorations Central, which is Holland America Line’s exclusive destination programming. It features indispensable travel resources and resources to help you engage with onboard experts and locals.
I have done over 1000 sea days with my husband on Princess, RCI, HAL, NCL, CELEBRITY,P&O, in all grades of cabins. I have got good loyalty levels on these lines , but now that I am solo traveller, it is very difficult to get reasonably priced cabins. There are so few solo cabins on the ships that do have them, that they sell out before you can purchase one. I am 77, independent, and would love to do more cruises, IF the pricing was better. This year I was lucky enough to get on Ovation of the Seas twice including repositioning cruise from Sydney to Hawaii in April/May. Prices were good for Studio Balcony , but ship is bigger than I would like. Prefer 2000 -3000 passengers. I have 2 booked on Celebrity Edge Jan 2024 & Jan 2025 but they are much more expensive. Happy to travel on my own, as I join in with trivia etc and am never lonely. Just disappointed with being penalised for being a widow and travelling on my own. I want to get more in before I turn 80 and travel insurance makes it even more expensive for me. What are other travellers thoughts?
Well it’s about time, I have great difficulty understanding why no single supplement is available, I spend nearly twice as much as a couple.

Cruises for Singles: No Solo Supplements, Antarctica and Beyond
Good news, cruises for singles have gained immense popularity in recent years. As more cruise lines offer solo rooms or studio cabins and more are offering discounts for those traveling alone. You can now choose an expedition or luxury cruise without paying extra. There are even tour companies that will pair you on land tours with a roommate to help solo travelers save.
Cruises and tours for single travelers provide a platform for individuals to break free from the traditional solo travel mold. You can immerse yourself in a community of like-minded explorers by choosing the right cruise or tour. This blog is focused on premium luxury solo travelers and expedition offers, but know there are solo options for nearly every price point.
The Rise of Solo Cruising
Solo travel has become a prevailing trend, with more individuals choosing to embark on journeys alone. Personally, I have been backpacking and traveling alone since I was 18. I love traveling the world and moving at the beat of my own drum. Not having to worry about what my friends want to do or see, and meeting people along the way.
Cruises, once considered primarily for couples or families, have adapted to this shift in travel preferences. Cruise lines now offer tailored experiences to cater to the unique needs and desires of solo travelers. Examples include onboard meet ups and ship designs to encourage people to mingle. VIrgin Voyages has The Social Club Diner for example, encouraging guests to engage. Seabourn says their open bar allows guests to drink and socialize together, without worry about the need of who is picking up the check.
One of the driving factors behind the surge in solo cruising is the desire for independence and self-discovery. Unlike other forms of solo travel, cruises provide a secure and structured environment, making them an ideal option for those who want to explore the world without the stress of planning every detail. It also provides you with the option to engage with others or retreat back to your room for some R&R and alone time.
Choosing to travel with a built-In community makes solo travel easier. Last year on my South Pacific expedition on the National Geographic Lindblad Orion was full of solo travelers. They were all outgoing and fun, to this day, many of us still talk and we’ve even had a travel reunion recently!
Cruises for solo travelers
If you are looking to travel solo, it’s always best to find a ship and adventure that is right for you. Personally, I love the small ships. When you are on a large ship, such as Virgin Voyages or Princess Cruises, you are surrounded by over 3,000 people and crew. It can be hard to meet people. After all, you might see someone once and then never see them again. Like the big ships, see solo cruise options here .
On smaller cruise ships and expeditions, people are more connected. With many ships holding less than 900 people, and expedition ships often holding less than 200, it’s very easy to meet, engage, and interact daily with travelers. Some of my dearest friends I have met during a small ship cruise or expedition. Spending days with them exploring the world and creating new bonds.
Often, the best deals for solo travelers tend to be near last minute or on sailings where demand is lower. Sometimes the shoulder season such as between major holidays and when school is in session.
Swan Hellenic 0% Single Supplement Antarctica
If you are looking to travel this year, Swan Hellenic is calling all solo travelers to explore Antarctica. A bucket list destination for most travelers is now in reach without the pesky 25% solo supplement which Swan Hellenic usually charges. Swan Hellenic already has one of the lowest solo supplements in the industry, and now it’s even better.
The Deal: No single supplement on any Antarctica sailing departing in November or December 2023. Starting as low as $8,470 per person for an Oceanview or $9,690.50 for a balcony. Only available vis Scott & Thomas, not available online.
If these dates do not work for you, know that by booking via Scott & Thomas Travel , my agency, you can save $1,000 per person on any 2024 or 2025 Swan Hellenic cruise .
Seabourn Solo Travel Special
Seabourn is owned by Carnival corporation, but is the luxury line of the group. Operated under the same umbrella as Holland America Line, but on smaller more luxurious premium all inclusive ships where every room is an ocean view staterooms or better.
The n ew Seabourn Pursuit will take part in her inaugural Antarctica season this year, joining her sister ship and upwards of 250 guests on the Seabourn Venture in Antarctica . Join either one of these ships with no solo supplements and the best sea views, with only balcony suites or better. No inside rooms here!
The deal : The best Antarctica deal currently costs $9,600 for a balcony suite in Feb 2024. This deal is limited and not available online. Be sure to contact me for more information.
Seabourn also dedicated an entire website for solo travel deals. These can be last minute and future cruises where the solo supplement is anywhere from 0-25%, but far less than the typical 100%.
Contact me or your favorite travel advisor for more details.
Silversea 0% Solo Supplement
Another luxury cruise line that offers all inclusive fares, including airfare and daily excursions in every port of call is Silversea. Silversea is offering no solo supplements across the world on 21 different sailings in 2023 and 2024.
Choose between a cruise around Japan or an expedition to the Galapagos. SilverSea has cruise options between Oct 2023 and March 2024 on sale with no solo supplements. Silversea ships are smaller and provide more opportunities to connect with both nature and the people on board. Every sailing has less than 800 people, with most between 250-600!
You can find all cruises for solo travelers on their dedicated website. Choose between Australia, Bali, Antarctica, or the Middle East without having to pay more for traveling solo. When you’re ready to book, be sure to contact me for additional opportunities for onboard credits or other deals.
Regent Seven Seas No Solo Supplement
Regent Seven Seas Cruises (RSSC) are known for the royal treatment of guests including everything from airfare to excursions in the cruise line. As one of the most luxurious cruise lines, they offer something for everyone who is looking for a luxurious and premium experience in more traditional cruise ports world wide.
You are encouraged to set sail solo and indulge in a journey tailored just for you aboard these new voyages that feature 0% Single Supplement . Whether you are dreaming of exploring the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or beyond. RSSC has the perfect itinerary at an extraordinary value. Don’t lmiss out on this chance to explore the world and save while doing so.
Bottom line
Solo cruising offers a unique blend of adventure and social connection, making it an attractive option for those seeking independence without sacrificing community. From Viking River cruises to big ocean ships and small expedition ships, the cruise industry continues to adapt to the evolving landscape of solo travel. There are more opportunities for singles to explore the world in a comfortable and secure environment. Especially on expeditions and small luxury ships.
Every day, more cruise lines offer new opportunities for solo travelers. Atlas Ocean Voyages offers cabins designed for solo travelers , Explora offers 0-15% solo supplements on nearly all sailings, whereas, Lindblad offers 100s of expeditions worldwide with no solo supplement. The list goes on. This is w hy you need a travel advisor .
Whether you’re a seasoned solo traveler or embarking on your first solo adventure, consider setting sail on a cruise for an experience that combines the thrill of exploration with the camaraderie of a shared journey. When you’re ready to book your experience, contact Scott & Thomas travel and ask for Rocky. Let me find the perfect solo cruise or land tour for you.

Check out these hidden features on cruise ships you had no idea existed.
How we chose the best singles’ cruises
We’ve scoured the web, talked to cruise experts, and cruised by ourselves to get the scoop on the best way to solo cruise. We looked at which cruise lines offer single staterooms priced for one, which ships have onboard activities appealing to single cruisers, and discovered the cruise itineraries with the best ports of call for solo travellers. The result is a list spanning many classes of cruise ship and price points, so if you want to get away from landlocked life and enjoy the single life at sea, one of these cruises will be perfect for you.
Best overall cruise for solo travellers
Norwegian Breakaway
Norwegian Cruise Line is consistently recognised as the leader in singles’ cruises, thanks to studio cabins sized and priced perfectly for one and a lounge area for single travellers to meet and mingle. For a memorable solo cruise, check out the port-heavy Caribbean itinerary on Norwegian Breakaway. You’ll get plenty of shore time in Cozumel, Roatán, Harvest Caye, and Costa Maya, with extra fun available before and after the cruise in the departure port of New Orleans.
What to expect:
Single pricing for studio cabins
Singles activities like bar crawls, meetups, ropes courses, and climbing walls
Free open bar and Wi-Fi
First-class entertainment on board with the Broadway musical Six , a 21st-century girl-power remix of five hundred years of historical Henry VIII heartbreak
Weekly sailings from November through the northern winter months for a solo escape from the cold
Departure from New Orleans, the ultimate port city for singles
Best cruise for active singles
Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas
Thanks to studio staterooms without the usual single supplement fee (which can double the cost of the holiday for a single cruiser), plus a wealth of onboard activities, the Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas is our pick for the best singles’ cruise for active holiday-goers. You’ll enjoy either an inside studio stateroom, virtual balcony stateroom, or a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony to rest up for your next onboard activity – and on the Ovation of the Seas, there’s no shortage of those! What’s even better is that the Ovation of the Seas takes active singles to see glaciers, whales and more during the weekly Alaskan cruises from Seattle, which run through the northern autumn.
Best cruise for seniors
Regal Princess
For elegance and world-class amenities, seniors travelling solo will fall in love with the Princess cruise experience. Aboard ships like the Regal Princess, you will enjoy daily cocktail parties and the chance to get dressed up and strut your stuff with like-minded older adults. After all, you already have something in common: cruising! In the northern autumn, the Regal Princess leaves Southampton, England, for a Belgium and Netherlands sampler cruise, giving you a taste of life in Brussels and Rotterdam over the course of a scintillating five-day sail. From there, you can indulge your artistic side with Vincent van Gogh in Amsterdam and Piet Mondrian and M.C. Escher in The Hague. Or tour the windmills of Holland during any number of fine excursions.
World-class itineraries taking single seniors to the best European cities
Singles-only nights aboard the ship
Excursions like hikes and walks around small villages, which offer unique chances to meet new people
Wine tasting sessions

Read on for the things polite people never do on cruises.
Best cruise for foodies
Celebrity Apex
The second in Celebrity’s Edge series of ocean liners is the cruise line’s ship with most single staterooms (24), increasing your odds of meeting other single cruisers. The ship itself is stunning and the cabins spacious for single foodies looking for a solo holiday at sea, but the culinary scene on the Celebrity Apex is the star of this show. Through 29 distinctive restaurants, bars, and lounges, you’ll discover more of the destinations you are visiting during your itinerary because the Michelin-starred chefs and mixologists onboard work to bring the flavours, ingredients, and cultures of each port onto the ship. It’s a dining experience unparalleled in the world of cruising, which makes it perfect for a solo foodie wanting to taste adventure.
Spacious single staterooms
Solo cabins with an infinite veranda
Floating magic carpet platform
The best cruise ship food at sea
Winter cruises in Europe visiting Athens, Santorini, and Dubrovnik
If you’re looking for waterslides and youthful kinds of fun on board, the Celebrity Apex is not your ship.
Best cruise for singles on a budget
Norwegian Bliss
On most cruise ships, the cabins are priced for two guests. This means that even if you are looking to enjoy a vacation at sea as a solo cruiser, you end up paying extra to have a stateroom all to yourself. Not so on Norwegian! The handsome, custom-designed single-studio staterooms – an industry first – provide solo cruisers with an affordable and stylish way to set sail. As an added benefit, singles in the Norwegian Studios get exclusive key card access to the Studio Complex and Lounge. This is a shared private area to mingle, have a drink, watch TV, and maybe meet someone with whom you could enjoy the rest of the cruise. In the morning, you and your new friend(s) can relax in the lounge with a cup of complimentary coffee or espresso.
‘Free At Sea’ program offering a free open bar, Wi-Fi, excursions, and specialty dining
Single pricing for studio staterooms
Free Broadway-calibre theatre productions, hilarious comedy shows, and epic dance parties
Enjoy the beaches on a budget with a Mexican Riviera itinerary, stopping in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, and Mazatlán.
Read on for what to pack for a cruise – and the things not to bring.
Best cruise for beach lovers
Carnival Mardi Gras
Carnival’s newest ship makes weekly trips to the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, Florida, so a solo cruiser can easily pop into a Disney park or The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios before or after the cruise. There’s a brilliant and affordable Western Caribbean seven-day cruise itinerary available, which makes three straight port calls in sandy slices of heaven: Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Mahogany Bay. It will delight solo beach lovers looking for long days with their toes buried in the warm sand and a fruity beverage in their hands.
Brand-new ship
Great beaches at a great price for solo cruisers
First roller coaster at sea
RedFrog Tiki Bar
Brewery on board where you can meet other beer lovers
No single supplement reduction on Carnival cruises
Demand for the new ship means prices are high for this year’s sailings.
Best river cruise for solo travellers
AmaWaterways Christmas markets on the Danube
Starting in Budapest, Hungary, and concluding in Vilshofen, Germany, this remarkable river cruise will open the doors to four countries – Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany – and three iconic capitals – Budapest, Bratislava, and Vienna – when they’re decked out in their holiday finest. Solo cruisers will meet others interested in experiencing Christmas trees glittering with thousands of lights, bells ringing from cathedral towers, and adorable European children regaling visitors with carols. The best secret in cruising right now is that AmaWaterways is waiving the single supplement cost on select ships in Europe with specially designed 13-square-metre, single-occupancy staterooms and French balconies.
Frequent solo traveller specials
Elegant cruise experience
Even with single supplement reductions, AmaWaterways river cruises may be cost-prohibitive for some travellers.
Traditionally, river cruises do not offer the bevy of entertainment and activities that a larger ocean liner provides.
Check out some of the most breathtaking river cruises around the world.
Best cruise for millennials
Virgin Voyages
The newest cruise line on the scene will disrupt the industry by doing away with buffets and Broadway-style musicals in favour of dozens of small-scale eateries, innovative modern performances, and 100 per cent free Wi-Fi and exercise classes. (Most beverages are free too!) Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages will win over millennials sceptical of cruising with its private beach bonfire parties, risqué after-hours entertainment, plant-based food choices, and striking interior design. Virgin has a private beach club that will surely rank as one of the best beaches in the world.
Complimentary soda, coffee, juices, and tea
Swing chairs on all balcony stateroom decks
Free group exercise classes
20 intimate dining spots
No kids under 18 on board
Limited itineraries
Only four- or five-night cruises

No Single Supplement: How to Find Trips without a Solo Penalty
February 8, 2023 by Janice Waugh
Since 2009, we've been working to change the way the travel industry serves solo travelers. We've been teaching solo travelers how to find trips with no single supplement and encouraging companies to eliminate it.
It's not been an easy battle but we are gaining ground. More companies are offering more trips and more departures with more space without single supplements. In fact, there are now some companies that cater exclusively to solo travelers.
But where are they? How do you find them? I have some advice.
Table of Contents
What Is the Single Supplement?
The single supplement is a surcharge endured by people who book a tour, cruise, or other travel package as a single person rather than with a travel partner. What does the single supplement mean? It means paying more for one person than half of what a couple pays.
Have you looked at the prices for tours and seen the term “per person based on double occupancy”? When you see that term and look at the price for a single person you will notice it is much higher than the quoted price.
In fact, a single person can pay up to the full two-person price. In such a case the single supplement is 100%. You're paying 100% more than one person paying the double-occupancy rate.
10 Tips to Find Trips with No or Very Low Single Supplements
1. check our exclusive list of trips with no single supplements..
Hundreds of people use our Deals page every day. The trip offerings on it change frequently. If you're looking to travel to a specific part of the world, or for a particular type of travel, use our Searchable Trips page. Would you like to receive the list in your inbox so that you don't miss anything? Sign up for our Solo Travel Advisory .
2. Get clever with Google.
This is the most obvious tip yet many people don’t think of it. Simply Google “no single supplement” or “single supplement waived” plus your desired destination to see what’s out there.
You can also have Google monitor your search term for your desired trip. When you set up a Google Alert you’ll receive an email every time the phrase you’ve selected is published on the Internet. For example, if you want a trip to Ireland without a single supplement, here's what you can do.
- Go to Google.com/alerts .
- In the box at the top of the page set up an alert in this format: “single supplement waived” “Ireland”.
- Click the “Show Options” box and set your options such as how often you want to receive email alerts.
- Hit “Create Alert,” and you’re done. The number of no single supplement opportunities this will present will depend on the nature of your request.
3. Know how to search a website for no single supplements.
We encourage companies to have pages on their websites specifically for solo travelers. On these pages the company policy regarding solo travelers and the single supplement should be communicated clearly, followed, hopefully, by a listing of trips with no single supplement. To find these pages on a site, look for “Solo Travel” in the menu at the top of the site or enter “solo travel” in the search box that is usually at the top as well.
4. Know how to calculate the size of the supplement you may have to pay.
It may not be clear whether a trip has a single supplement. First, look to see if the price says “based on double occupancy” or has an asterisk beside it that links to the same statement. If so, you know there's a supplement but you don't know how much it is.
At this point I suggest that you go to the payment page before you read all the wonderful details about the trip. There will be a place where you indicate the number of people booking the trip. Calculate the cost of the trip twice, once for one person and once for two people.
Here's how you determine the single supplement rate. Divide the price for the single person by half the price of two people and you'll find the percentage of the supplement being charged. For example, if the price for one person is $1,200 and the price for two people is $2,000 then your simple equation would be: 1,200 ÷ 1,000 = 1.2. 1.2 equals 120% and indicates a 20% single supplement. Now that you know what the supplement is, you may be in a position to negotiate a better deal. Some sites will not provide accurate pricing information for solo travelers without forcing you to enter personal information, or requiring you to call them. If you find this frustrating, you can pick up the phone and use that toll-free number to let them know.
5. Book early or at the last minute.
Some companies will be more willing to negotiate on the supplement when they've just announced the trip (for a couple of spots) and also near the departure time to fill empty spaces. Booking very early or at the last minute can be your answer to a great deal.
6. Choose the shoulder season.
You're going to have more success finding trips with no single supplement when the tours are not as busy, the resorts not as full, and the ships not as booked. Try to plan your vacation at a time of year when fewer people are traveling.
7. Be bold and ask for the supplement to be waived.
Your success may depend on how soon the ship sails or how empty the resort is, but it’s always worth asking to have the single supplement waived. If you’re working with a travel agent, ask them to negotiate for you – perhaps they’ll have some leverage or inside knowledge that will help them be successful. If they’re not successful, go to the operator directly and try it yourself.
8. Fine-tune your timing.
Solo or not, flexibility is always a factor when looking for great deals. A day earlier or later can make a difference on a flight; a week sooner or later can make a difference on a cruise. Do your research and see just what that difference is. And, again, negotiate. Ask whether by changing your dates the company could waive the single supplement for you.
9. If you have to, accept a roommate.
Many people don’t like the idea of being paired with a stranger for a trip but I’ve heard many good reports and even that great friendships have resulted from this. After all, if you’re on the same trip you likely have something in common. Companies that do this will pair you up with someone of the same gender and, if they don’t have someone for you, they will usually waive the supplement. Read: Find a Travel Partner: Safe Options and Some to Avoid .
10. Find an offer you can’t refuse.
Find a deal so great that the single supplement isn’t really an issue. You may still have to pay a supplement, but if you find an extraordinary deal it won’t be quite so painful.
Solo Traveler's Work to End the Single Supplement
When I first started Solo Traveler, I was an independent solo traveler. It didn't occur to me that traveling with a group would be solo travel.
It didn't take me long to understand that it is and that there are times when group travel makes more sense than going independently. Then I learned about the single supplement. We have tackled the issue of the supplement ever since.
We started by producing a list of tours that we compiled from Google Alerts indicating that a supplement was waived. This was a very meagre list. Companies might waive the supplement for one tour or a few spots on one tour. It was not a common practice. Far less common than the 100% supplement.
Then we became proactive. We approached companies to sell them on the idea of waiving the supplement or, at least, reducing the supplement to a maximum of 20%. Slowly, we converted a few companies to our way of thinking and produced a more formal list on our Deals page and in the form of an email to our readership. That list has grown to offer a significant number of trips from a wide variety of tour and cruise companies.
Next, we started the Solo Travel Awards. This brought more attention to the issue and encouraged companies to up their game and lower the supplement more in hopes of winning an award. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put an end to that program.
Ah, but while on our “COVID Break”, we did some technical work so that our travelers could search trips offered by companies based on specific criteria. You can do so on the Searchable Trips page.
What's next in our campaign to deliver to you trips with no single supplement? Stay tuned! You can be sure that we are on the case. If you're not already on our mailing list, sign up now so you don't miss a thing.
Why Tour Companies Are Ending the Single Supplement
It's been a slow process but in the last few years solo travelers have burst onto the scene. It feels like solo travel is the flavor of the year–every year.
Study after study is showing that people are traveling solo, that the number of those who travel solo is growing, and that solo travelers travel often. We track as much of the data as we can. Have a read here: Solo Travel Statistics and Data .
It's all good news for solo travelers.

Frequently Asked Questions
One of the major barriers for solo travellers are ‘single supplements’, or additional charges because you are travelling alone. When travelling with Aurora Expeditions, you won’t need to worry about these thanks to our cabin-mate finding service. Solo travellers who are happy to share can take advantage of our informal cabin-mate finding service that matches you with a cabin mate (or two) of the same gender. This way you can avoid paying any extra single supplements during your voyage with us.
That is fine. We offer the option to pay a 50% surcharge for a sole occupancy cabin (on top of the twin occupancy rate).
On our expeditions, the average ratio between solo travellers and others (whether couples or friends) is approximately 30:70. However, this varies. If you are keen to know more about the others booked on your specific voyage, talk to one of our Expedition Experts for more details. We are always keen to help ensure you are booked on the most suitable voyage for you.
Generally, the split between women and men travelling solo on our trips is 50:50, however in recent years there has been a slight rise in the number of female solo travellers. If you’d like to know more about the others booked on your specific voyage, talk to our Expedition Experts today.
The age groups of passengers on our voyages vary hugely. Traditionally the majority of passengers have been over 50, however in recent years we have seen an increase in younger guests; particularly with the lure of our adventure activities, photography workshops, adding voyages to a round-the-world trip etc. We would say expect the age range to be diverse & rest assured that a good, mixed range of ages on the expedition makes the experience all the more fun.

Benefits of travelling solo
1. all-inclusive pricing.
The advantage of river cruising is one up-front price with no hidden fees or extra payments required. In fact, when you board a Uniworld cruise, you won’t even be asked for your credit card. All your meals, accommodation, tours, beverages and little extras throughout the journey are included.
2. Like-minded travellers
Up to eight percent of European river cruisers travel solo. With most ships generally having (no more than) 200 passengers at a time, it’s easy to meet people and share the experience.
3. More boutique hotel than cruise
Compared to large ocean liners, Uniworld river cruises are more like floating, private, intimate hotels. The sophisticated setting is a wonderful way to enjoy the company of others or revel in ‘alone time’.
4. Go your own way; do your own thing
Want to be social? Easy. Rather retreat to your cabin to read a book on your balcony while the world drifts by? The choice is yours. Travelling solo gives you complete autonomy on how you spend your day with no compromises required.

Art Nouveau city – Ålesund is renowned for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture and famed Atlanterhavsparken aquarium. Our tour to the aquarium includes a visit to see resident penguins before we continue to nearby Mount Aksla for an amazing view.
Into the fjords – In the summer, we set our course for the spectacular UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, passing sheer, 800 metre-high cliffs and dramatic waterfalls. In autumn, we explore Hjørundfjord in the majestic Sunnmøre Alps. The fjord’s pristine natural landscape of steep rock walls, lush green meadows, lonely mountain farms and tiny villages is unforgettable.
Mountains and roses – Molde is known as the ‘City of Roses’ because of its lovely municipal gardens. This attractive coastal town has an amazing view of 222 mountain peaks across the fjord, called ‘the Molde Panorama’.
