What's the difference between an Eastern Caribbean cruise and a Western Caribbean cruise?

Many beautiful Caribbean islands are worth visiting at one point or another. However, if you’re particularly interested in exploring the Eastern Caribbean, it’s important to know which islands that region includes. The exact places you visit on an Eastern Caribbean cruise will vary depending on the cruise line and itinerary you choose, but Eastern Caribbean cruises tend to include destinations like the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. A Western Caribbean cruise itinerary might include stops in Jamaica, Mexico, or Belize, to name just a few destinations.

When is the best time to go on an Eastern Caribbean cruise?

Weather is warm all year long in the Eastern Caribbean, so the main thing to consider is hurricane season, which could derail your cruise trip with cancellations and last-minute itinerary changes. Hurricane season typically falls between early June and late November, so winter is a great time to take a cruise and trade chilly temperatures at home for balmy Caribbean weather.

Visit Fortaleza San Felipe, which was built in the 16th century and served as a prison under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. My 10 day Gem review, Eastern Caribbean (long)

By Butch2099 , January 31, 2012 in Norwegian Cruise Line

Recommended Posts

Cool Cruiser

Published on CC main board but thought I would share it here also....

NCL Gem 10 Day Eastern Caribbean from NY

Let me start by saying I wasn't going to write a review. The cruise we took on the Gem was very close to being the exact same cruise we took on the Gem 3years ago, which I had reviewed at that time. What changed my mind? Well, after filling out NCL's post cruise survey and finding no place to enter comments I figured I would share my comments here.

How do I know someone from NCL will read them here?

At our groups Meet & Greet, we got to meet a lot of the ships officers including the captain who told us that a few years ago NCL had a choice. To ignore cruise critic and their members or embrace the forum & it's members. They chose to embrace us.

So here goes...

Our background: Cruising was Myself (44), my wife & 11yr old daughter. We have cruised Carnival, Celebrity, NCL and Royal Caribbean before, over 10+ cruises and this was our 4th NCL cruise in 5years, 2nd time on the Gem. We are easy going, budget conscious and try to enjoy vacation and do as much as possible without breaking the bank.

Embarkation: One of the main reasons we took this cruise was going out of NY is easy. We had no airfare coming from PA, we were able to get someone to drop us off at the pier, pull up, porters are there to take luggage that you unload from car onto a cart & next time you see your bags was at the room. Can't ask for more. Checking in was OK, it took around 30 min, I identified myself as a Latitudes member, where we had our own line but I wasn't impressed, it looked as long as the non-Latitudes member line. I guess membership there doesn't have it's privileges unless you are a higher tier or you reserved a suite (different, very short line).

Sail away/sea days: Sail away from NY is nice, scenic, it was cold but not bad for Jan 8th. It was in the 60's by the 1st full sea day and they surprised everyone by having a poolside barbecue with pasta, chicken & rice. Typical sea days, some activities & entertainment, casino ect..

We did attend our CC meet & greet which had it's benefits. We got to put some faces to the people we were talking to online. Made some friends that we had throughout the cruise & beyond. It's always nice to have people to go along with you when you get to the islands. The Captain & his staff came & spoke to us and the meet & greet organizer actually was able to set up an exclusive bridge tour for all the people who attended the meet & greet. The staff gave us cards with their extensions & told us not to hesitate to contact them if we had any issues.

Puerto Rico: After almost 3 full days on the ship everyone is ready to get off. We left NY Sunday @4 arrived in PR Wednesday at 3pm but there was some problem with the ship clearing to dock so we were delayed 30-40min getting the Ok to disembark & then there was the cattle rush. They extended the return time 30min (9:30 instead of 9pm). The last time we did this cruise we didn't have PR, we had Barbados & had a full day there, 3-9pm or 3:30-9:30 just doesn't do it for me. We got off the ship, walked up to Castle San Cristobal which closed @6pm. It was close, inexpensive & we got some nice pictures. We walked back down through Old San Juan & into some of the shops but ended up at CVS to grab some stuff.

St Thomas: Having been to St Thomas before we decided after looking at the ports of call boards (Great resource) that we wanted to take the ferry over to Cinnamon Bay in St Johns. It was the highlight of our cruise. Beautiful beach and knowing what to expect from the boards helped tremendously. We got back to the ship in time to do a little shopping outside the ship & we were off to...

St John's Antigua: Different from the St John's we visited the day before but much like St Thomas this was our 3rd time there. So I had researched Eli's Eco tour from the information I found on the Ports of call boards & wasn't disappointed. The tour picked us up right on the dock near the Gem where we literally drove up to 3 other beaches to pick up other passengers. Then we got a tour of the island, got to visit & climb Devil's bridge, short hike up bird island where the views were great, had a nice lunch & then went snorkeling. We didn't have much time to do anything else there once we returned. My DD bought a necklace from one of the vendors. But let me add once you get out of the "ship dock area" and into the marketplace it's usually chaotic with people trying to sell you tours, taxis or goods, so be prepared. Being originally from NY I can handle it, but if you look like a sheep you will be easy pickings.

St Martin: The last time we were in St Martin I did the Americas cup racing boat tour (would highly recommend)while dw & dd went horseback riding (not 4me). This time they wanted to go back again (still not 4me) so they went with the friends we met at the M&G. I thought about the Cup race again but I wasn't in the mood. I wandered to the taxi stand & ended up with a group of people on a 3hr island tour. The tour was great since I had never seen the whole island. The tour ended up being almost 4hrs & was only $25pp ($30 w/tip) because the group had 8+ people.

Tortola: Last stop before heading home, much like PR the arrival/departure time left much to be desired. Arrive at 7am, everyone back on board 12:30 depart @1pm. We took a taxi over to Cane Garden Bay ($8pp) stayed there 2 1/2 hrs then had to get back. Nice beach, wish we had more time.

Heading back: It was very windy off Florida so no bbq by the pool & upper decks were closed, by the 2nd day back it was pretty cold, 70mph winds & 20ft waves so we were rocking. It didn't bother us and that last night we had the buffet almost to ourselves..Which leads me to...

Food: The food was what we expected from past cruises on NCL. Some people on the boards complain but we found everything tasty and had no complaints. We ate in the Grand Pacific, Magenta & the buffet. We never felt rushed, and I thought the service timing was better than it was on past cruises. I like the idea of an everyday menu along with the daily specials menu.

The anytime dining is one of the biggest reasons we have stayed with NCL. Getting my DW anywhere on time is a challenge and I don't like to fight with her about being "on time" for dinner. Plus you go to dinner when you are hungry, not when scheduled.

My only complaint here is the buffet never changes (maybe 1 station does) in all of the 10 days and even the outdoor bbq is almost the same each time.

I would also LOVE if the Blue Lagoon kept a snack type menu 24 hours instead of switching to breakfast and other menus throughout the day. If you want anything besides breakfast before 11:30 am you have to call room service or for a $5 pizza (which I did 1 morning & it seemed like a leftover pizza from the night before that they threw some more cheese on it & reheated).

Cabin: We booked an inside cabin because we don't usually spend a lot of time in the room. I must say it's getting to be a challenge as DD gets older and we had 10 days of clothes with us for both warm & cold weather. The 1st day we noticed there was no shower gel dispenser in the shower (not empty, totally missing). I called the front desk and they took the information. My DW had brought a bar of soap so we used that. I mentioned to the cabin steward about it the next day when it still wasn't fixed & he said they went to the wrong cabin. That night he left us a small bottle of shower gel. It never got fixed & we didn't complain about it again, we just used a bar of soap we bought from CVS in PR.

Staff: Voted friendliest ship of all cruise lines (or something like that) and it's well deserved. Our cabin steward always greeted us by name and was always working. Everywhere you went people were helpful & would say hello.

Entertainment: If you had never been on a cruise before you will probably enjoy yourself. The shows are entertaining but for me it's a repeat. The Second City did the same shtick with different people. Even the Hypnotist who was a totally different person did the same routine!! For a cruiseline that pushes for repeat business why can't they recognize that the people who are coming back want to see something a little different. Also I took DD to Name that tune & it was 50's & 60's music! I don't think the median age was that high!

Kids club: When my DD was younger it was the place to be. It was like she had her own vacation. Now she is older that time is over. She spent most of her time with Mom and some time with Dad. Why? The age groups are setup 2-5, 6-12 and 13-17. With DD being 11 (almost 12) putting her in with 6yr old kids doing Lego's is torture for her. The program is definitely geared to the younger kids. The few times she went was when it was teen room takeover or if something caught her eye, but she didn't go nearly as much as she had on other cruises. I asked if she was 12 would she be able to get bumped to the higher age group and was told no because that group has 17yr olds in it and they don't want anyone below 13 in with them. There should definitely be another tier in there somewhere with activities geared more for 9-12 year old and their interests...

Overall: Solid vacation, more or less what was expected going in. I will definitely be back on NCL (bought the future cruise credit). Will be looking closer at the tradeoff from going out of NY & being on the ship for so long down & back with cold days on both ends to flying to Florida & being warm immediately but having airline/hotel/transportation costs.

Welcome home. We were on the same cruise. Very nice review.

Enjoyed your review. We were on the same cruise. Somehow, we didn't get any officer's phone numbers at the Meet and Greet but did enjoy the luncheon afterwards and the tour of the bridge. It was our 4th time on this sailing and the only time we had rough seas coming back to NY. (We had rough seas leaving NY the first two cruises.)

I found the buffets at breakfast and dinner very ample; different choices at dinner and more than you can imagine for breakfast. We like the specialty restaurants a lot but this time, Tequila was the best.

We've seen some of the shows before but on all cruiselines the same shows are repeated (both the production shows and the headliners). I can't quite figure out why the headliners (singers, comedians, magicians) don't vary the shows each year at the very least.

I'm glad you enjoyed the review...I found there to be plenty of food at the buffet & had no issue of the quality. It just seemed like it was always the same food...Burger station, pasta station, pizza station, carved meat station, salad & bread. The meat station changed a little, maybe to chicken...lol...I'm not a big breakfast eater & some days it was a stretch to hold out until lunch food was served. I may be wrong but I thought Royal Caribbean's version of the Blue Lagoon served lunch/wings ect.. was 24hrs. Don't quote me on that though :-)

Someone gave me a card with all their numbers on it. I didn't feel the need to use it though, but it was nice to have.

I don't mind seeing a comedy show or a hypnotist again. But I really expected after 3 years that both shows would be even SLIGHTLY different...Especially when there are different people doing them.

Thanks for the very nice review.

I was on the GEM in September to Bermuda and I agree with all you said.

Who was your Cruise Director?

Thank you, we are doing the same for Christmas this year. I also am looking the cost/time of NYC port vs the flying and hotel.

We are going to do the Sky in a few weeks and test that. If I was paying it would be costing us more for hotel and air than the cruise. (I have points for the air and hotel and not a whole week to this time) This was even more so at Christmas last year and that is why did the jewel and book the Gem this year 22-31.

Thanks for the very nice review. I was on the GEM in September to Bermuda and I agree with all you said.   Who was your Cruise Director?   Don

"Big Ken" he was very funny.

Thanks for posting. We did the 7 nighter in December and all of us had a wonderful time.

I agree about entertainment for ALL CRUISELINES: they need to change things up for repeat cruisers, particularly production shows.

I too enjoyed the food on NCL; though the buffet was pretty much the same, there really is a wide variety. I like the poolside BBQ too.

Oh, and I agree that the Latitudes check-in lines (for non-gold or platinum) vs. non-Latitudes mean nothing! They're not shorter for Latitudes members from what I've seen.

Great review!!!!

I have one question what time did the ship dock in New York on 1/28/12? We have to book a car service and do not know what time we will be off the ship.

Great review!!!! I have one question what time did the ship dock in New York on 1/28/12? We have to book a car service and do not know what time we will be off the ship.

Since it was a Saturday they said that customs was delayed (didn't realize that two ships were disembarking around the same time).

We were actually at the dock around 8 - 8:30 am even though it says disembarking at 10 am. With all of the delays, we were outside with bags waiting for our car service around 11:00 am (we had priority disembarking)

we were back on wednesday and off the ship by 10 and we had 1 of the earlier tags

Dongordon were you with us on the Gem in 09? Or maybe the Dawn in 11? your cruise critic name sounds very very familiar

Updated: Apr 19, 2024 / 02:54 PM CDT

TAMPA, Fla. ( WFLA ) — Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled more than a dozen cruises for 2025.

A spokesperson from the cruise line told Nexstar’s WFLA that the cancelations were “a result of varied events including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas.”

The canceled cruises include:

  • Norwegian Epic – Feb. 20, 2025, Nov. 1, 2025, Nov. 11, 2025
  • Norwegian Jade   – Mar. 4, 2025, Mar. 13, 2025, Mar. 24, 2025
  • Norwegian Pearl   – Apr. 19, 2025, May 5, 2025, May 16, 2025, Oct. 15, 2025
  • Norwegian Sky   – May 27, 2025, Jun. 5, 2025
  • Norwegian Spirit – Jan. 1, 2025, May 17, 2025
  • Norwegian Star – May 18, 2025, May 29, 2025, Jun. 9, 2025,
  • Norwegian Viva   – May 27, 2025, Sep. 20, 2025, Sep. 29, 2025

According to Cruise Industry News , the canceled cruises were set to visit the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Adriatic Sea, the Middle East, the Red Sea, Asia and Northern Europe.

The February Norwegian Epic sailing was set to depart from Port Canaveral. Norwegian’s website shows a new sailing on the Epic is scheduled for Feb. 15 to Feb. 22, 2025.

“We are committed to providing exceptional vacation experiences, both aboard our ships and by taking our guests to some of the most sought-out destinations around the world. While we try to maintain original itineraries as much as possible, at times modifications are made to optimize the itinerary, enhance the guest experience or accommodate certain circumstances,” a spokesperson said.

Norwegian Cruise Line said affected passengers will receive a full refund and a 10 percent discount that can be used on any sailing through Dec. 31, 2025.

Best overall

Celebrity cruises.

With a breathtaking mix of elegant ship design, gorgeous cabins, delicious restaurants and luxurious outdoor spaces—including a rooftop garden, martini-glass hot tubs seemingly floating in mid-air, the adults-only Solarium and the thrilling Magic Carpet lounge jutting out over the water on the Edge-class ships (Beyond, Edge, Apex and the forthcoming Ascent)— Celebrity is our choice for the overall best Caribbean cruise. Each of the four main dining destinations has stunning, regional-specific design elements, shared and individualized menus and top-notch service.

Additionally, the Celebrity spa and its thermal suite are the best at sea for affordable luxury and ultimate relaxation while island-hopping. If you're looking for the best cruises for couples in the Caribbean, it's hard to beat the affordable elegance and sheer class of these ships.

  • 11-day southern Caribbean itineraries with a port of call in Cartegena, Colombia
  • Three top-notch complimentary main dining rooms
  • Eden, the live entertainment venue that's home to more than 5,000 live plants
  • The spa's SEA Thermal Suite is the apex of relaxation
  • Lack of outdoor activities like waterslides and rides for families
  • The theatrical stage shows sometimes disappoint

Scenic is one of the best Caribbean cruises for the traveler who wants to experience remote escapes for a more culturally authentic vacation in well-traveled waters. Best for luxury lovers

Scenic cruises.

The world's first discovery yacht, the Scenic Eclipse , which spends part of the year exploring the Arctic and Antarctica, is now bringing guests to some of the most exotic small ports of the Caribbean. Scenic is one of the best Caribbean cruises for the traveler who wants to experience remote escapes for a more culturally authentic vacation in well-traveled waters. You will visit ports such as Darby Island, Egg Island and Long Island in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico's Isla de Culebra, Grenadine's Mayreau and Colombia's Isla de Providencia, as well as have the opportunity to make a full Panama Canal voyage.

And the joy of cruising the Caribbean on this luxury small ship isn't limited to the destinations—you'll enjoy extraordinary onboard experiences too. Let's start with the fact that there are private butlers for each cabin and suite, and just 228 guest maximum on any given sailing, with almost a 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio. You'll also find 10 dining options, premium beverages and all airport transfers and gratuities included in the price. Plus, once-in-a-lifetime immersive excursions and enrichment experiences, like floating through mangroves and small caves in glass-bottom kayaks, are all complimentary. With everything covered and handled on a Scenic Caribbean cruise, the only thing you'll need to worry about is figuring out what to pack .

  • Private butlers and a nearly 1:1 guest-to-crew ratio
  • Remote ports of call accessible only on a small ship
  • Truly all-inclusive , with even excursions included in the price
  • Lack of diverse activities and entertainment on board

Best for seniors

Princess cruises.

If you're of a certain vintage that fondly recalls the TV show  The Love Boat , then Princess Cruises is the best Caribbean cruise for you! It was a Princess ship featured in that classic show, and they still call it The Love Boat, so nostalgic seniors will think that Princess Cruise Line ships are the bee's knees! But Princess is one of the best Caribbean cruise options because the ships have a retro elegance about them, an old-fashioned level of class with shiny brass decorative elements, elaborate chandeliers, familiar tasty food, upscale wine tastings, cultural enrichment programs, Deal or No Deal games on the main stage, Broadway-style entertainment, and The Love Boat Piazza Party on one of your formal nights.

Additionally, seniors will enjoy knowing that on every Princess ship cruising the Caribbean, there are many ADA cabins with full wheelchair-turning space, roll-in showers with grab bars and a fold-down bench seat, as well as closets and desks that are both cleverly designed and highly accessible. Princess Cruises also offers one of the best Alaska cruise itineraries.

  • Numerous ADA-accessible staterooms across all cabin types (from suites to interior rooms)
  • Old-school elegance
  • May feel too old-timey for some travelers

NCL and Fincantieri mark milestone with float out of Norwegian Aqua

CruiseMapper logo

NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line and Fincantieri celebrated the float out of Norwegian Aqua at Fincantieri ’s Marghera shipyard on Tuesday, April 23.

This marks a significant milestone for the first ship in the Prima Plus Class , as she was launched from the drydock at the shipbuilding yard in Marghera/Venice , making her initial contact with the water.

The float-out signifies the completion of the ship's external construction in preparation for its debut in April 2025. In a maritime tradition, two ceremonial coins were welded into Norwegian Aqua to symbolize good luck and safe passage for the vessel. The ship's hull was blessed by a local chaplain and christened with champagne.

Norwegian Aqua, at 156,300 gross tons and 1056 ft (322 m) in length, will be 10% larger than her predecessors in the Prima Class, offering more space and innovative features. These include the world’s first-ever hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide, the Aqua Slidecoaster, a digital sports complex with an interactive LED floor, Glow Court, and NCL’s most expansive outdoor promenade, Ocean Boulevard.

Additionally, the ship will feature luxurious staterooms in The Haven by Norwegian, including 3-bedroom Duplex Haven Suites.

Norwegian Aqua is scheduled to debut in April 2025 with 7-day Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral Florida , followed by voyages to Bermuda from NYC New York  and Eastern Caribbean itineraries from Miami Florida .
