A Detailed Nusa Penida Itinerary | How to Spend 1,2,3 Days on the Island

One of the top places that I recommend visiting during a trip to Indonesia would have to be the beautiful island of Nusa Penida.

Located just off the southeastern coast of Bali, you will find an island full of pristine beaches, blue waters, vast viewpoints, underground temples, and plenty of windy roads.

This guide will go over how to put together the best possible Nusa Penida itinerary, whether you have 1, 2 or 3 days to visit the island.

1) How to Get to Nusa Penida

Since Nusa Penida is an island and has no airport, the only way to get there would be by boat.

There really are only three places that have direct ferries to Nusa Penida – 1) Bali, 2) the Gili Islands, or 3) the nearby Nusa Lembongan.

You will most likely be arriving in Nusa Penida at the Toya Pakeh Harbour or potentially at the nearby Buyuk Harbour.

To see the latest ferry schedules I would recommend heading over to a website like Baliferry, Gilitickets, Giligetaways, or Directferries .

While they include several of the ferry companies, they do not necessarily have them all on there either, so be sure to research around. Below are the approximate prices and times of the ferries to Nusa Penida:

• From Bali (Sanur Harbor) | ~$17 – $25 USD | 1 Hour
• From Gili Trawangan / Air | ~$45 USD | 2 Hours
• From Nusa Lembongan | ~$10 USD | 20 minutes

» If coming from Bali, most ferry companies include hotel pick up with the cost of the ticket. This usually only applies if you are staying from southern Bali up to Ubud.

» You can also take part of a “do it yourself” day trip from Bali if you do not have the time to spend the night on Nusa Penida. Simply grab the first ferry of the day, and then head back to Bali on the last departure. Feel free to leverage any single day from the itinerary down below when putting that day trip together.

2) How to Get Around

When it comes to Nusa Penida, there are two main ways to get yourself around the island – by scooter or by private driver.

A third potential option here (and mostly for those day visitors from Bali) is to take a guided day tour of the island with everything taken care of for you – car transfer, ferry tickets, guide, etc.

» If you are comfortable enough on a scooter / motorbike, you can rent one from the harbor area or your hotel for as little as $5 – $10 USD per day . Some of the roads of Nusa Penida are in very poor condition, with tons of uneven terrain throughout.

I have heard of plenty of accidents happening on the island with those who were not experienced enough. So please do not rent a scooter if you do not have the expertise.

» If you want to play it safe, I would recommend hiring a driver for each day you are on the island, so you can be taken to any attractions that you would like to visit. Expect to pay around $40 USD for a full day driver on the island. You can either find them at the harbor area or have your hotel help set one up for you.

» Lastly, you could join a tour that will take you around the island if doing so as a Bali day trip. You can choose from a few different types of options here depending on what attractions you want to visit:

• From Bali: Nusa Penida Small Group Tour by Speed Boat
• Bali: Day Trip to East Nusa Penida, Atuh & Diamond Beach
• From Bali: Swim with Manta Rays in Nusa Penida

3) Where to Stay

Nusa Penida is relatively new to the tourism landscape which is why many of the roads throughout the island are just not up to standard.

You also won’t find too many tourist hotspot areas like an Ubud or a Seminyak. Many of the accommodation options are just sprawled throughout.

A lot of the popular spots though are more on the western side of the island closer to the harbor area.

Below are some highly rated options based on price point in that area. What is also great about Nusa Penida is that it is budget friendly with the most expensive options not even $100 per night.

4) Helpful Tips & Notes

» Staying on the island overnight gives you the chance to get up early and stay late to avoid the crowds . Many of these attractions can get quite crowded during the day, so by being on your own schedule, you will have a better chance to really enjoy each place.

» As mentioned before, the roads are bumpy and can be quite dangerous . Only rent a scooter if you have the appropriate experience.

» The island can be broken into two main parts – the western and eastern side . Most day trippers will focus on the western side as it is closer to the harbor area and has some of the top attractions, while the eastern side is a bit less crowded.

» Bring cash with you from Bali. While there are ATMs on the island, they are harder to come by so plan accordingly and bring enough cash along.

» For lunch, plan on eating at a warung nearby some of the beaches or other attractions . I would not venture far off your route for the day just to go to a certain restaurant since it can take a good amount of time navigating the roads.

» For dinner, you may not find too many options around depending on where you are staying . There may just be a handful of them that are within walking distance from your hotel, and don’t expect anything too fancy there.

» Many of the attractions require entrance/parking fees, but these are usually no more than just one dollar or so . Be sure to have some small change with you throughout the day.

A Nusa Penida Itinerary

Now that you have some background on how to get to Nusa Penida, how to get around, and where to stay, let’s dive into some potential 1,2, and 3 day itinerary options for your time exploring the island.

I have written up three separate days of attractions down below, so feel free to mix and match the days based on how long you have on the island.

Day 1 will include the most popular attractions on the west coast, day 2 will focus on the east coast, and day 3 will have a little bit of everything.

Depending on the type of traveler you are and your travel pace, feel free to add or remove certain attractions along the way. If you want to spend one full day just at the beach then go for it!

I have also included the map below which shows day 1 in blue, day 2 in orange, and day 3 in purple.

5) Nusa Penida 1 Day

Whether you are staying on the island for the night or just taking the day trip from Bali, below is what a 1 day Nusa Penida itinerary can look like. Since it is only a single day, this will entail all the main and easily accessible attractions on the western side of the island.

Angel’s Billabong

Angel’s Billabong is a beautiful natural tidal pool on Nusa Penida overlooking the ocean. To enjoy the tidal pool though, you must plan your visit around low tide. As the tide gets higher, the water from the ocean starts splashing its way into the tidal pool.

This not only ruins the serene views of the pool, but it also means you will not have the chance to head into Angel’s Billabong either as it would just be too dangerous.

Broken Beach

Just a few minutes’ walk from Angel’s Billabong you will find another top natural attraction on the island – Broken Beach.

While the beach is not accessible, you can enjoy some 360-degree views from up top as you circle the beach and walk above on the rock arch.

Down below you will be able to see the waves crashing through the arch alongside the scenic rock formations lining the beach.

Kelingking Beach

Arguably the most popular attraction of Nusa Penida is Kelingking Beach. From the viewpoint area above, you will be able to take in one of the top views in all of Indonesia.

Out in front of you will be this massive T-Rex shaped peninsula, the crystal-clear waters, and the sandy beach itself.

Here comes the fun part though – in order to reach the beach, you will need to head down a steep and somewhat dangerous pathway that is built into the cliffside walls.

It should take around 30 minutes or so to get from the viewpoint area to the beach itself, but once you are down there, you can fully enjoy all that Kelingking has to offer.

Crystal Bay

If you are staying overnight on the island and are not in a rush to get back to Bali, then you should end your day with a sunset experience at Crystal Bay.

Since it is the main beach on the western side of the island, you will find that many people head there to enjoy a nice sunset.

Out in the distance you will be able to see Nusa Ceningan with the sun slowly setting behind the island.

Quick tip – you can also make the walk to the more seclusive Pandan Beach, which is located just on the southern side of Crystal Bay.

6) Nusa Penida 2 Day

If you have 2 days to spare when visiting Nusa Penida, you will be able to enjoy even more of what this beautiful island has to offer. While you can keep day 1 as is from above, day 2 will focus on the eastern side of Nusa Penida.

The below attractions can be completed in a clockwise direction as you make your way from one place to the next and enjoy much of what eastern Nusa Penida has to offer.

Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple

The first stop of the day can be the Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple.

Now this is not your normal temple. Instead, you will need to maneuver your way through a small hole built into the mountainside, and once through, you will be greeted to a massive cave temple.

There are several chambers throughout the cave with various rituals going on as you make the walk around. When it comes to authentic cultural experiences, this is one of the best you can ask for on Nusa Penida.

After leaving the temple, continue the drive around the island, where you will soon arrive at a parking lot located directly between Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach.

From the parking lot, you will be able to visit both beaches over the course of several hours.

To get to Atuh Beach, you will need to head down a steep staircase until you reach the beach level.

Once you arrive at Atuh Beach, feel free to grab a chair in the sand, have some food/drinks from one of the warungs and take a dip in the water.

After finishing up at Atuh Beach, you will need to make that walk back up to the parking lot area, where you can then check out Diamond Beach.

Diamond Beach

Before heading down to Diamond Beach itself, you can walk around the top area to get some nice views of the beach from above. Once you are ready, it is time to make your way on the staircase built into the cliffside wall.

The walk down offers some breathtaking views of the staircase, the massive cliff, the clear waters, and the beach itself. After reaching the bottom of the staircase, you can once again enjoy yet another beach on Nusa Penida.

After enough time down below, it is back up the staircase, and to the parking lot, where you can continue to the last stop of the day.

Rumah Pohon Treehouse & Thousand Islands Viewpoint

Just a few minutes’ drive towards the opposite side of Diamond Beach you will find one of my favorite viewpoints on Nusa Penida.

The spot is called the Thousand Islands Viewpoint but it is also home to the famous Rumah Pohon Treehouse. Just note if you see one of these mentioned, you are essentially visiting both of them.

From the viewpoint spot you will have the view of Diamond Beach from an alternate angle alongside several of these massive rock formations jutting out of the water down below.

You will find a few treehouses around the viewpoint area that overlook these views as well. If you are interested, you can actually reserve a night at the treehouse and wake up/go to sleep with that view.

7) Nusa Penida 3 Day

Having three days to explore Nusa Penida will give you the chance to visit all of the above and then decide what types of activities you would like to take part of on your last day on the island. Below are a few different options to choose from based on your preference.

1) Two of the other highly rated attractions that are located right in between the west and east side of the island include:

Tembeling Beach & Natural Pools

The Tembeling Beach, Natural Pools and Forest is one of the less visited attractions on the island. It offers the chance to get away from the crowds a bit, but still enjoy a very beautiful place on Nusa Penida.

There are a few different parts to Tembeling that you will get to experience during a visit. First is the drive down as you pass through the Tembeling Forest.

Once you are at the parking lot area, you will walk down the stairs and be welcomed to a large natural swimming pool.

From there you will take in views of a “secret beach” with hundreds of rock piles set up in the area, and soon after will come across a second smaller natural swimming pool.

Finally, there is Tembeling Beach itself – a small beach to relax at with some great views.

Peguyangan Waterfall

Another less visited attraction on the island is the Peguyangan Waterfall. It is not just a simple waterfall though. From the parking lot area you will make your way down a steep blue colored staircase that is built alongside the cliff wall.

Once you reach the bottom of the staircase you will arrive at a temple area and a natural spring that is spouting out water to cleanse in. The water then makes its way over the side of the cliff resulting in the Peguyangan Waterfall.

2) Another option here is to head on a scuba diving or snorkeling trip off the coast of the island and have the chance to see some manta rays. This was something I didn’t have the chance to do it, but it is certainly on my bucket list for next time around.

3) Finally, if all the sightseeing on the first two days was enough for you, then why not just pick a beach on the island – it could be one of the beaches mentioned above or a less visited one, and just spend the day relaxing in the sand and enjoying the beautiful water. 

» One of my recommendations here would be the less visited Suwehan Beach , located on the eastern side of the island. You can definitely combo the beach along with one or both of Tembeling and Peguyangan if you would like.

Nusa Penida Day Trip: What to See in One Day

Nusa Penida is the largest island of the Nusa Islands just off the east coast of Bali, Indonesia. The island is popular with tourists due to the island’s pristine beaches, magnificent viewpoints , a coastline that resembles the head of a tyrannosaurus rex and gorgeous dive sites . 

I’ve been to Bali many times and each time I stay in Canggu to get pampered and eat at the best cafes . But this time around, I left Canggu! * Gasp * And I ventured out to see something different. So glad I did because Nusa Penida is everything I wanted and more!

And there are so many things to see on Nusa Penida that you may want to stay at least two days on the Island. But if you can only spare one day from your itinerary, you can still see some of the best highlights on Nusa Penida in one day.

So if you like unspoiled beaches and rustic island vibes, then keep reading and find out how you can spend a day on Nusa Penida.

What you need to know before taking a day trip to Nusa Penida

Before spending the day on Nusa Penida, look at my post on  everything you need to know before going to Bali . I included a lot of information, including how to get around Bali, how to get a prepaid SIM card and other essential Bali travel tips.

Here are a few additional tips for going on a day tour to Nusa Penida:

• You can visit Nusa Penida for the day from Nusa Lembongan or Bali.
• Doing a self-exploration tour of Nusa Penida is possible. But you should be at least an intermediate rider when riding a scooter. The roads on Nusa Penida are super rough and bumpy!
• Bring enough cash for scooter rental and food for the day .
• Bring enough water , especially if you are going during warmer months.

Nusa Penida 1 day trip: What to bring

Exploring Nusa Penida as a day trip is super fun! For a guaranteed good time, make sure you bring the following:

• a small backpack for all your belongings
• a pair of versatile shoes that is ideal for walking over sharp limestone into the rock pool and riding a scooter
• quick dry clothing  because you will be in and out of the water all day
• bathing suit because there are many gorgeous beaches around the island
• a small towel to dry off or to sit at the beach
• enough cash for the day since most places will only take cash
• plenty of water for the long scooter rides around the island
• lots of sunscreen to block all the UV rays while you are scootering around
• hat and sunglasses to further block any sun rays

How to get to Nusa Penida

1. small boat from nusa lembongan to nusa penida.

Catch a small boat to Nusa Penida from the north end of the Yellow Bridge on Nusa Lembongan . You will see many signs for the boat going to the biggest Nusa island. Park your scooter as indicated.

A return trip to Nusa Penida costs 120K IDR per person . There isn’t an exact schedule for the boat, but they will start the journey once the boat is full. The trip to Nusa Penida takes about 20 minutes .

The boat will drop all passengers at the pier at Toya Pakeh Beach , which is on the northwestern coast of Nusa Penida.

2. High-speed boat from Bali to Nusa Penida

Many companies offer fast boat services from Bali to Nusa Penida .

All the fast boat companies are along the beach in Sanur at the end of Jalan Hang Tuah . Each company will have several boats going to Nusa Penida as early as 7:30 am and returning as late as 5:00 pm . And the price may include pick-up and drop-off at specific locations in Bali.

Check schedules and prices with Penida Express . Prices start from 196K IDR per person .

How to get around Nusa Penida

There are three options to get around Nusa Penida . Either rent a scooter and get around the island yourself, hire a car and driver to take you around the island or join a tour. I’ll explain the pros and cons of each option.

1. Rent a scooter for a self-guided tour of Nusa Penida

Once you arrive in Nusa Penida, plenty of people will approach you and offer you deals on renting a scooter. A scooter rental costs 80K IDR or so. You get a moped, helmet and a full tank of petrol.

The advantage of a self-guided scooter ride is you are on your own schedule . So you can do whatever you like at your own pace.

However, if you are unfamiliar with driving a scooter, you may not want to try it in Nusa Penida . Part of the road to Kelingking Beach is quite rough – it is quite bumpy for at least 20 minutes, and it feels like the entire road is full of speed bumps.

So, before renting a scooter, be aware that the roads are not for inexperienced drivers. Ask yourself: is riding a scooter the best option to explore Nusa Penida ? And if not, there are other options as well.

2. Hire a car and driver for a self-guided tour of Nusa Penida

An alternative option is to hire a car and driver to take you around the island .

The advantage of this option is that you leave all the navigating and driving to someone else . And you get to sit in an air-conditioned car between visiting different attractions.

However, it will cost you at least 250K IDR per person and another 250K IDR for hiring a driver . It is a comfortable option but not the cheapest option. Getting a few other travellers to rent a private car might be worthwhile.

3. Join a Nusa Penida Day Tour

Another option is to join a one-day Nusa Penida tour . Many tours go to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan or Bali.

You can find many tour operators in Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan or online. The fee starts from 300K IDR per person .

Also, there are numerous Nusa Penida day tours from Bali as well. They offer Nusa Penida one-day tours and multiple-day tours if you want to spend more time in Nusa Penida.

One-day Itinerary for self-tour of Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a relatively big island but the toughest part about getting around the island is the road condition . Many parts of the road are not paved and super bumpy. Which means it would require more travel time between attractions.

It is possible to see most the highlights of Nusa Penida in one day. However, it is quite fast, and you will have to start early.

Below is a suggested one-day itinerary for Nusa Penida if you are touring the island on your own scooter.

• Arrive in Nusa Penida around 8:00 am .
• Rent a scooter at the pier, and off you go!
• First, visit  Crystal Bay Beach to see the clear crystal water and enjoy a refreshing coconut at the beach.
• Drive about 55 minutes to  Broken Beach . The distances between the two beaches look close, but there is only one road that will take you from one beach to another. Make sure to visit Angel Billabong while you are there.
• Next, drive about 30 minutes to Kelingking Beach to see the famous tyrannosaurus rex coastline. If you only take photos from the top of the cliff, it should take no more than 30 minutes or so. But if you want to descend to the beach below, you will need more time, especially for the climb coming back up. It is quite a trek to go back up!
• Go back to the pier! Make sure you leave yourself sufficient time to get back to the pier.
• Catch the last fast boat back to Nusa Lembongan or Bali.

Nusa Penida one day trip: things to do in Nusa Penida

Whichever mode of transportation you choose will be great because there are many things to do in Nusa Penida. I included all the attractions on the map.

1. Crystal Bay Beach

A white sandy beach with crystal clear water where you can swim and dive . The beach definitely earned the name because the water is crystal clear!

And it is one of the best spots to snorkel in Nusa Penida . Not far from the beach, you snorkel in crystal water and find fish swimming in the shallow water.

Or if you want to relax at the beach , choose one of the beach lounge beds on the beach.

Don’t worry about finding food. There are several vendors selling food and beverages like fresh coconut.

2. Broken Beach

Another famous hot spot on Nusa Penida is Broken Beach . At the southeastern tip of the island , the area used to be a large cave but part of the area collapsed . From an aerial view, it looks like a giant crater with rocks and water inside . You can walk around by following the path.

If you have seen Broken Beach on Instagram, the famous shot is the area where a strip of land resembles an arched bridge.

3. Angel’s Billabong

Close to Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong is a quiet blue rock pool with big waves crashing at the cliff’s edge .

Take a look at all the different hues of blues and greens within the rock pool once the waves have settled. You can cool off from the sun by dipping into the rock pool . But be careful of the sharp limestone!

4. Kelingking Beach

Anyone who goes to Nusa Penida would want to see the tyrannosaurus rex! The outline of the coast looks like the head of a t-rex . And it is probably one of the best Instagram spots in Bali !

Most people hover over the coast to take photos of the dinosaur’s head from various viewpoints .

And for those who want to get up-close and personal, you can descend the hundreds of steps down the back of t-rex and descend to Kelingking Beach . The view of the coast is marvellous no matter where you are at.

If you are spending more than one day in Nusa Penida

The one-day Nusa Penida itinerary only covers the highlights of the western part of the island. There is so much more to see on Nusa Penida, so I highly recommend staying overnight on the island.

Here are some of the best attractions on Nusa Penida if you have another day:

• Tembeling Beach and Forest – a serene natural pool that is excellent for swimming while the beach is further away from the coast.
• Teletubbies Hill – the green rolling hills got its name from the children’s show because it resembles the round green hills in its background. It is a different scenery than all the well-known ones around Nusa Penida. And it is especially magnificent when viewed with a drone.
• Rumah Pohon “Tree House” – the famous Instagram Nusa Penida treehouse, Rumah Pohon is located at Thousand Island viewpoint on the east side of the island.
• Diamond Beach – once you park your scooter in the designated parking lot, walk towards the coast and descend the steep staircase along the huge rock wall. You can see beautiful coastal cliffs and water from the stairs, and the view is spectacular. The beach is more swimmable than the nearby Atuh Beach.
• Atuh Beach – hike down the steep path to a gorgeous white sandy beach in a small cove with beautiful turquoise water surrounded by erratic limestone rock formations. Visit during high tide to see the turquoise water or low tide to see a completely different beach.
• Swim with Manta Rays – join a tour from Bali to swim with Manta Rays .

Where to stay in Nusa Penida

If you spend only one day in Nusa Penida, you can only see one part of the island because the road terrain is so rough that it is hard to get around the entire island in one day.

So it is highly recommended to stay at least one night in Nusa Penida to explore other attractions.

Hi Stephen! Thank you so much! I rented the scooter and did an island tour on my own. I don’t have a specific contact. But once you are on the island, people will approach you to rent scooter and car + driver. I contemplated to hire a car and driver with some of the people I met on the boat going to Nusa Penida but ended up doing the scooter thing instead. Hiring a car and driver is not the cheapest option so sharing a car might be an option as well. Hope this helps! 🙂

Nusa Penida Tour: The Perfect day trip from Bali

Nusa Penida is the little gem of Bali. Penida island is part of the Nusa Islands , is the biggest of the 3 but until now the least developed. By visiting Nusa Penida expect white-sand beaches with silky blue water, 200-meter high coastal cliffs drop, and yet untouched nature. It is recommended to either visit the island by a one-day Nusa Penida Tour or a 3-day Nusa Penida trip .

Things to see on a Nusa Penida Tour

During a Nusa Penida day tour, you can either explore the west or east coast of Penida Island. West is more popular since it is closer to the harbor. East is at least as beautiful and has fewer tourists. If you prefer to see both sides, it is better to do a 3-day Nusa Penida Trip .

West Coast Nusa Penida Tour

The west coast of Penida island has beautiful sights like Angel’s Billabong and Kelingking Beach . Combine this with Crystal Bay, Peguyangan waterfall and Broken Beach to have a day filled with incredible viewpoints and jaw-dropping nature. It’s also possible to book a day tour leaving from Bali in advance.

Tip: It’s also a great option to switch Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong for Tembeling Natural Pool .

Kelingking beach

Kelingking beach is 100% sure the most spectacular place on Nusa Penida. White sand and a piece of land shaped like a dinosaur head. The view from the top is incredible but be prepared if you want to hike down to the beach. This hike down is a 45-minute incredibly steep path.

Angel’s Billabong & Broken Beach

Nusa Penida is full of spectacular shaped locations. Broken Beach is one of them. A 45-minute bumpy ride from KelingKing takes you to this spectacular gate.

A 150-meter walk from Broken Beach is a natural infinity pool where you can dip in and enjoy the clearest water you’ve ever swam in.

One of the few beaches fully surrounded by palm trees where you can snorkel and relax.

Peguyangan waterfall or Snorkeling with Manta Rays

A 150-meter high iron blue stairs down towards a tiny waterfall, which gives you the most scenic areas and a real test to your fear of heights. Around Nusa Penida are great Manta-Ray snorkeling and diving points. To do this, you would have to stay a little longer or book a day tour dedicated to swimming with Manta Rays.

Tembeling Forest & Beach

For a more unique experience on Nusa Penida, we recommend you to visit Tembeling Natural Pool, forest and beach . Modify your west Nusa Penida tour by removing one of the other things to do on Nusa Penida .

The east coast is a little more untouched. You will visit Atuh and Diamond Beach , Thousand Islands viewpoint, Rumah Pohon Treehouse and you can either choose between the underground temple Giri Putri or Teletubbies Hill.

Price of a Nusa Penida tour

The price of a tour totally depends on what you like to see and the comfort you prefer on Penida Island. A day trip usually takes from 8 AM until 16 PM. Spend one night on Nusa Penida if you like to see both the east and west coast in a Nusa Penida tour. 

Private tour price A private Nusa Penida Tour with driver, car, boat, hotel transfers, and entrance fees usually starts from 750.000 IDR (~50 USD). Split the costs with two to four people and it will be cheaper than a shared van.

Nusa Penida Island In Bali: Travel Guide & How To Visit

The beautiful, exotic Nusa Penida island lies just 25 kilometers from Bali, the most famous tourist destination in Indonesia.

Nusa Penida is a much smaller island than Bali, but it has some of the most amazing scenery in the entire Bali province (which it’s part of).

We’ve visited Penida more than a dozen times over the years, but it never gets old. This island is definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit in Indonesia .

The island can be visited on a day trip from Bali (same day return), but I think it’s better to stay and spend at least a few days sightseeing. There are so many good photo spots, hikes, and other things to do in Nusa Penida!

This travel blog will explain what to do in Nusa Penida, how to get there, where to stay, best transport options and tour packages, and some of the top sights to see. I’ve also included a handy Nusa Penida island map for trip planning!

Where Is Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida is a small island located southeast of Bali, Indonesia. The distance from Bali is about 25 kilometers (15 miles).

Penida has two small neighboring islands sitting right next to it called Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, and together these are known as the Nusa islands, but Nusa Penida has become the most famous of the three because of its scenic cliff views and stunning beaches.  

How To Get To Nusa Penida

From Bali, the only way to reach Nusa Penida is by speedboat or ferry, with the speedboat journey taking about 45 minutes or so. There’s no airport in Nusa Penida, so the closest place to fly is the international airport in Bali (DPS). You can shop for flights to Bali at Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of speedboat companies in Bali making the trip to Penida daily, and they all depart from Sanur Beach at various times. If you’re staying in Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, or elsewhere in south Bali, you can also drive over to Sanur and catch a boat. Some boat companies include a shuttle service from these areas in their total price.

I wrote a complete guide on how to get to Nusa Penida with one of these speedboat companies if you want to go there independently and arrange everything yourself. It’s more economical than booking a tour package, but also a bit more complicated.

The other option is booking a day tour to Nusa Penida with a Bali-based tour company. This can be a good option if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the hassle.

Visiting Nusa Penida Island – Tourist Fee

Since 2023, there’s now an entrance fee for tourists arriving by boat at Nusa Penida, and it’s intended to pay for better infrastructure on the island.

You’ll pay this in cash when you first get off the boat in Penida, and the fee is 25k Rupiah for adults and 15k for children. It gives you entry to all three of the Nusa islands: Penida, Lembongan, and Ceningan.

This ticket also gives you entrance to all of the main attractions and beaches on Nusa Penida, so you don’t have to pay a second fee at Kelingking Beach anymore, for example.

Overall, it’s a positive change, because in the past you had to whip out your wallet and pay a small entrance fee at every tourist spot in Nusa Penida. That was a bit tiresome. Nowadays, you pay once at the harbor and you’re done.  

Transport: How To Get Around On Nusa Penida

Even though Nusa Penida is a much smaller island than Bali (with about 4 percent of Bali’s land mass), it’s still not exactly tiny. You can expect to spend hours driving around if you want to see the best sights on each corner of the island.

Just like in Bali, you have two main transport options for exploring Nusa Penida: motorbike rental (self drive), or hire a car and private driver.

Many of the roads in Nusa Penida are still very rough and narrow, so I don’t think motorbikes are a good idea here, although lots of people seem to do it with no issues. Remember to wear a helmet, honk your horn before hills and blind turns, and be prepared to pull over to the side to let cars pass. There’s not a lot of room on the road.

When I visit Nusa Penida I’ve always rented a car with driver (you can book here ) because it’s safer and more comfortable, and the prices are only a bit higher than what you’d pay in Bali for a full day of driving.

Scooters are also easy to rent from your accommodation (or other places) in Penida, and you can expect to pay about 75k Rupiah (~$5 USD) per day with a full tank of gas.

For short taxi trips (like hotel transfers to/from the dock) you can usually arrange those on the spot or with your hotel, although they’re not very cost effective.

Unfortunately the Grab and Go-Jek ride hailing apps are not yet available in Nusa Penida (only Bali), but maybe that will change eventually.

What To Do In Nusa Penida

• kelingking beach.

The Kelingking Cliff is the most famous view in Nusa Penida, and probably one of the most iconic views anywhere in Bali.

This is an incredible ‘T-Rex’ shaped rock sticking out over the ocean, with perfect turquoise water splashing around it. The first time you look over the edge of the cliff and see this view, it really is breathtaking!

After you’re done admiring the scenery at the Kelingking Cliff, there’s also a path to go down to the beach at the bottom.

The hike down to the beach is a major workout, a bit scary, and takes at least two hours roundtrip, but you’re rewarded with one of the best white sand beaches in Nusa Penida Bali.

The T-Rex shaped Kelingking Cliff .

• Paluang Cliff Viewpoint

Everyone goes to Kelingking Cliff, but there’s another spot located very close to it with its own amazing scenery, called Paluang Cliff. It’s just a 5 minute drive from Kelingking.

Paluang may not be as well known as Kelingking, but that’s part of the appeal. It’s a great alternative spot that gives you views of the Kelingking T-rex from the other side, without the crowds.

There are swings and photo platforms at the Paluang Cliff, plus a Balinese temple with a quirky car shrine, called the ‘car temple’ of Nusa Penida.

Paluang Cliff Viewpoint

• Broken Beach

For most visitors to Nusa Penida island, one of the first stops will be Broken Beach. This is a cool circular cove formed in the rocks, complete with a leftover arch.

This area is also one of the popular hangout spots for the manta rays, so you’ll most likely get to see some rays floating around in the sea nearby.

The bottom is filled with turquoise water from the waves coming in, and there’s even a small white sand beach. You can’t actually go down to the beach, just admire from above, but what a cool view it is!

There’s a few old local legends associated with this place that say it was created either by a giant’s footsteps or by an angry sorcerer.

It’s definitely a very unique kind of formation that I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere else in the world.

• Crystal Bay

One of the popular spots on the west side of Penida is Crystal Bay. This is a good hangout or suntanning spot, and it has plenty of food and drink shacks for refreshments. Snorkeling gear can be rented here, or you can just sit around and chill out while eating some chicken satay.

The great thing about Crystal Bay is that it’s one of the best spots to catch the sunset in Penida. Last July, I went back here with a buddy and we sipped Bintangs with our toes in the sand while the sunset came down over the rocks on the coast.

• Banah Cliff Point

The great thing about Banah Cliff Point is that it actually has half a dozen different view points along the cliffs, and at each view point you can walk right up to the edge of the cliff and look down at the waves crashing on the rocks.

From these cliffs you can usually see a bunch of tiny manta rays and speedboats floating around on the ocean below. You can also see the Banah rock, a doughnut shaped rock sticking out of the ocean. Great stuff!

• Tembeling Cave & Beach

The Tembeling beach and forest is a hidden spot tucked away in the cliffs on Nusa Penida’s west coast, with a natural pool and small waterfall to enjoy.

My favorite feature of this beach is the awesome sea cave that opens up to a view of the huge cliffs on the coast, but this place is also becoming popular for the Tembeling natural pool, which you can take a dip in and relax.

The access to this beach is a bit tricky, but it’s one of our favorite spots in Bali!

• Atuh Beach

This is one of the nicest beaches on the south end of Penida island. Unlike Suwehan Beach, Atuh is not a secret and there are sunbeds, beanbags, and a couple of nice food and drink shacks here.

The highlight of Atuh Beach is probably the big elephant shaped rock in the ocean (locals say it looks like a stiletto), and the big variety of sea life that can be seen trapped in the rocks at low tide.

• Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

Have you ever wanted to sleep in a wooden tree house and wake up to the sounds of the ocean? Here’s where you can do it. The room and bed are very basic, but the views and location are out of this world.

You’ll fall asleep to the sound of geckos chirping in the trees, and wake up to an incredible sunrise over the Raja Lima islands, with dolphins and manta rays swimming and jumping in the distance.

• Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, named after the pointy diamond shaped rock on the beach, is another utterly incredible “cliff beach” on the southeastern coast of Nusa Penida island.

It’s accessible since late 2018, when a path down to the beach was carved into the side of the cliffs. I’ve even seen some wildlife occasionally, from monitor lizards to dolphins and manta rays.

This place is also becoming popular thanks to the scenic swing, where you can take pictures while swinging between two palm trees over the beach.

Diamond Beach gets its name from this unique pointy rock.

• Teletubbies Hill

The center of Penida island has these big round hills named after the background scenery from the Teletubbies kids show.

They look kind of like the Chocolate Hills in Bohol Philippines , and using a drone here gives you some unique perspectives.

If you come here during or just after the rainy season (roughly December to April), then the hills are a perfect green color.

Between April and May, the hills are a more yellow color, but still neat to see. During the summer however, the hills will turn dry and brown, so they won’t look as nice.

• Suwehan Beach

Looking for a hidden beach with perfect white sand and turquoise waves? Suwehan is one of the best hidden beaches in Penida.

The hike down to the beach takes about 30 minutes and it’s exhausting, but very worthwhile. This is one of my favorite places in Penida. There’s even a cool pointy rock that looks like a Christmas tree.

This beach is a hidden gem that still isn’t included in most Nusa Penida island tour packages, but you can get there with a scooter or car charter. Careful, because the road is quite rough.

• Suwehan Tree House

In 2018, the locals built some tree houses at the top of Suwehan cliff. There’s four of these tree houses now, and you can stay the night in them!

Don’t expect luxury, but there’s an outside shower/bathroom and a small food shack for ordering meals, and the beds look comfy.

The best part is that you have a stunning view of the ocean and cliffs, and it’s just a short distance from Suwehan Beach!

• Goa Giri Putri Temple

This is a Hindu temple inside of a big limestone cave, located on the east side of Penida. To reach it, you have to climb more than one hundred steps to the top of the hill.

After crawling through a tiny hole in the side of the mountain, the inside opens up to a huge cave about 300 meters long, with high rock ceilings!

Hindu ceremonies are still performed here, but it’s also open to tourists. Exploring this cave is an interesting experience, for sure.

Spooky inside

• Nyanyad Beach

This is a mostly unknown beach on the south end of Nusa Penida, with a small temple and giant hills on both sides of the beach.

The road to Nyanyad Beach is a bit tricky to find, but well worth the effort. Google Maps will try to steer you onto a wrong road that leads to a lighthouse.

Once you reach the parking area for Nyanyad, the hike down to the beach only takes 15 minutes, with concrete steps all the way, and the beach has perfect white sand!

This spot is another hidden gem that isn’t included in most Nusa Penida island tour packages, although you can get there with a scooter or car charter.

Nyanyad Beach

• Peguyangan Waterfall

If you want to try a sketchy, remote Nusa Penida hike with steep paths to get your adrenaline going, this one is for you.

Peguyangan is a small waterfall and natural swimming pool at the bottom of some cliffs on Nusa Penida island, and you reach it by climbing down hundreds of steps on a bright blue stairway.

It’s not for the faint of heart, but the ocean and cliff views here are incredible, which is why I’d rate it as one of the best hikes in Nusa Penida.

There’s even a neat little ultra scenic hotel at the top of the cliffs called Waterfall Inn , with stunning views of the whole area.

Best Nusa Penida Photo Spot

It’s hard to pick the best Nusa Penida photo spot, but I’d say it’s probably a toss-up between Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach . Both are amazing.

Two other great photo spots in Nusa Penida would have to be Suwehan Beach and the Nusa Penida treehouse . These are stunning, and Suwehan is still pretty underrated.

Nusa Penida Hike List

Probably the most epic Nusa Penida hike is the famous Kelingking Cliff , where you can climb down a steep stairway to reach a pristine white sand beach at the bottom.

Another good Nusa Penida hike is Tembeling Beach And Forest , which has a nice mix of jungle and beach scenery, plus a sea cave and natural swimming pool.

If you really want an off-the-radar Nusa Penida hike, check out Batu Siha Beach . This is a new one I explored in 2019, and it’s still untouched except for locals. The path is intense and exhausting, but there’s a white sand beach at the bottom.

The hiking trails in Nusa Penida tend to be very short and intense, because you’re usually climbing down steep cliffs to reach a secluded beach, temple, or waterfall at the bottom.

Unlike Bali, Penida island doesn’t have any mountains or volcanoes to hike. This also means waterfalls are scarce on the island, although there are a couple interesting ones like Peguyangan Waterfall .

Best Sunset Spot In Nusa Penida

There are lots of great sunset spots in Nusa Penida.

The island has a long west-facing coastline, and pretty much anywhere on the west side is good for watching the sunset.

Two favorites are Crystal Bay , which has a relaxing beach, and Amok Sunset , which is a nice restaurant with views over Nusa Ceningan. The views at Kelingking Beach or Paluang Cliff can also be pretty nice.

Sunset time in Nusa Penida Bali can be anywhere from 6:00 PM to 6:45 PM, depending on the day and month. You can check that here .

For a good sunrise spot, check out the Nusa Penida treehouse , on the southeast side of the island.

Water Sports In Nusa Penida

The main water sports in Nusa Penida are snorkeling and scuba diving, and these are exceptional! The section below talks about these activities in a bit more detail.

Unlike Bali, Nusa Penida is not really known for good surfing or waves. However, two other good water sports in Nusa Penida are jet skiing and boat charters.

A boat charter can be great for snorkeling, fishing, or just relaxing while sightseeing around the coast of the island. You can book this with Pulau Private Charters , and they have cruise options to fit every need.

I’ve been itching to try a jet ski tour around Nusa Penida, because it looks like an amazing way to see the epic coastline from a new perspective. The only company currently offering this is Jet Ski Safari Bali Wibisana , and it’s not cheap!

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling In Nusa Penida

The coral reefs around Nusa Penida island are fantastic for diving and snorkeling, and you can even swim with manta rays, ocean sunfish (‘mola mola’), and all kinds of other colorful fish.

In fact, Nusa Penida is one of the best places in the world to swim with manta rays and giant mola mola fish. The latter can only be seen by scuba diving, but manta rays are easy to see while snorkeling near the surface. For snorkeling, some of the best spots in Nusa Penida include Manta Bay, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, and Toyapakeh Wall. It’s possible to visit all of these spots in a day trip. There’s also an underwater Buddha statue , but sadly they don’t seem to be allowing access anymore.

Nusa Penida snorkeling tours can be arranged on the spot at Toyapakeh boat harbor, or it’s also possible to book them online as day tours departing from Bali, complete with hotel pickup and speed boat transfer.

What To Bring

If you’re putting together a Nusa Penida packing list, here are a few ideas of good things to bring.

Most of the items below can probably be found on Nusa Penida island in a pinch, but the quality of stuff you buy on the street won’t be guaranteed (personally, I’m not about to use a junky knockoff bag from a street vendor to protect my expensive camera gear).

It’s best to buy vetted products online!

• Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
• Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
• Snorkeling Gear: Many of the areas around Nusa Penida have nice corals and fish, and you won’t want to miss out on them. Snorkels and masks can be rented on the boat too, but if you plan to do multiple tours it’s more economical to bring your own gear.
• Water Shoes: Save your feet some grief and wear water shoes! We got some cuts while walking to shore from the boats.

Nusa Penida Restaurants

The flurry of tourism is bringing lots of new restaurants and cafes to Nusa Penida, so now it has a bunch of great options!

Here are just a few of our restaurant recommendations:

• Penida Colada : This was one of the first great restaurants on the island, with a big menu, beach vibes, good food and good presentation. Plus the name is cool!
• Secret Penida Cafe : Another nice beachfront cafe in north Nusa Penida with Western and Indonesian food.
• Penida Espresso : Best smoothie bowls on the island, and they’re very reasonably priced. Nice for a hot day.
• Sweet Spot : One of the first indoor cafes on the island with air-conditioning! Great breakfast here.
• The Chill : Ocean view pool with no minimum spend! Nice atmosphere with a wade-up bar and swings.
• Amok Sunset : Fancy cliffside restaurant and bar with a pool, and great sunset views over Nusa Ceningan.
• Warung Nengah Mesin : Mother’s cooking. Simply delicious. This is a local warung in the south part of the island, so it’s easy to reach from many of the major sights.

Nusa Penida Massage & Spa

Nusa Penida doesn’t have a lot of massage places compared to Bali, but I’m sure that’ll change over time as more tourists arrive. A foot massage is the perfect way to unwind after a full day of hiking or touring.

One of the best massage places in Nusa Penida would have to be Tejas Spa Warnakali , which has ocean views and is part of the Adiwana Warnakali Resort . You don’t need to be a guest at the resort to get a massage there, it’s open to the public.

For budget spa and massage places in Nusa Penida, you can check out Little Papaya , Juara Spa , and Dhipalia Massage . However, we haven’t tried these ones yet, so I can’t vouch for the quality.  

Other Nusa Penida Tips

• Credit Cards: Almost all restaurants, hotels, and other charges in Penida are cash only. Best thing to do is bring plenty of cash with you from Bali. I also like to book my bigger purchases online (like hotels and drivers), that way I can pay for them with credit card and save my precious cash for those little roadside warungs and fresh coconuts!
• ATM: Penida still has very few ATM options. The most reliable seems to be the Bank BRI booth at Sampalan , but it only lets you pull 1 million Rupiah per try.
• Cell Service: Phone reception is strong with Telkomsel in most of the main areas of Penida, although you may lose service in some places while driving around because of the hilly terrain of the island.
• WiFi: The WiFi situation in Penida used to be very poor compared to Bali, but it has improved dramatically in the last few years, so most hotels already have good WiFi that can be used for browsing, streaming videos, and sending emails.
• Convenience Stores: There are lots of small mini marts, especially around the north shore, where you can buy cheap snacks, drinks, toiletries, sunscreen, and other such things. Sari Yoga Mart and Bagus Mart are two good options. However, their selection is much smaller than what you’ll find shopping in Bali.
• Language: The locals in Nusa Penida speak Balinese with a distinct dialect, and although many of them also understand Indonesian, they’re not schooled in English (unlike in Bali). This means most Nusa Penidans only know a little bit of English that they’ve been able to pick up from tourists, so be patient and come prepared to explain things by pointing or showing pictures.
• Mosquitoes: There is some dengue fever present in Nusa Penida, but it seems to be less common than in Bali, which is probably because of the drier climate in Penida. You won’t need bug spray for visiting the beaches or really any of the popular tourist sites, but we have seen mosquitoes at the Tembeling forest and Goa Giri Putri, as well as near some of the hotels in Nusa Penida. Thankfully there is no malaria in either Penida or Bali, so you don’t need to worry about anti-malarial medications or anything like that. The entire Bali province is certified malaria free according to this Lancet study from 2018.

Is Nusa Penida Safe?

Yes, Nusa Penida is very safe!

We live in Bali off and on. Violent crime is unheard of in Penida, and petty crime is also rare. Just take normal precautions. This is a tight knit community and the locals are very kind and hospitable.

Balinese are religious people, so please don’t disrespect the temples or local culture. And do be careful if you hike any of the steep cliffs like Kelingking Beach!

Nusa Penida Wildlife

Just like Bali, the island of Nusa Penida is full of wonderful wildlife, and if you’re lucky you might see some during your visit.

Animals living in Penida include bats, spiders, monitor lizards, and monkeys (Balinese macaques). You can see the monkeys at Kelingking Cliff and other places on the island. At the Goa Giri Putri cave , there are even two species of endangered purplish-orange crabs that live nowhere else on Earth except Nusa Penida island.

Nusa Penida is a bird sanctuary with many endangered bird species, including the very nice Bali starlings. Not many of these are left in the wild, so sightings are rare, but it’s hoped their numbers will improve.

Snakes in Nusa Penida include pythons, vipers, spitting cobras, and sea snakes. The only one I’ve seen here personally is the island pit viper (Trimeresurus insularis).

In the main tourist spots of Nusa Penida, you aren’t likely to ever see a snake. If you do, treat it with extreme caution! Venomous snakes in Bali can be very dangerous and there’s no anti-venom available in Penida.

One time I almost stepped on a very venomous island pit viper while hiking in Nusa Penida. My foot landed within inches of the snake, which was coiled up in the center of the path, but thankfully its head was turned away from me and it didn’t see how close my foot landed.

The triangular head and bright red tail on its green body was a giveaway. This was in a less traveled part of the island with lots of foliage. It wasn’t in a tourist area.

If you go snorkeling or scuba diving at Nusa Penida, you can get up close with the gentle manta rays and gigantic ocean sunfish (‘mola mola’), and all kinds of other colorful fish and coral. We’ve also seen sea turtles and dolphins in the waters around Penida.

Best Time To Visit

Nusa Penida has a drier and more sunny climate than mainland Bali, so any month is great for visiting.

The best time to visit Nusa Penida island really just depends on what you’re looking for.

Bali’s rainy season runs from November to April. It’s less crowded during this time, and the rain is mostly at night, but the weather during the day can be hot and humid at 90-95 F (32-35 C).

From May to August, the temps are a lot cooler, and it’s more breezy and sunny. This is the high season so it’s a little more crowded.

Penida is spectacular at any time of the year, but I think the best months for photography are March to May (right after the rainy season ends), as this is when the island is covered with green foliage.

However, if you’re just looking for the nicest weather, May to August are the most comfortable months of the year.

Is Nusa Penida Worth It?

If you’ve kept reading this far and you still aren’t sure whether you should visit Pineda, then the answer is YES, Nusa Penida is definitely worth it!

This island has some of the best natural scenery anywhere in the Bali province, and some of the best views anywhere in Indonesia for that matter. It has great photo spots, cliffs, caves, beaches, hikes, water sports, and more.

There are even lots of nice hotels and restaurants popping up, and it’s becoming easier to get around the island. Overall, it’s well worth crossing the short distance from Bali to Nusa Penida in order to see all of the things this island has to offer.

How Long To Stay

Don’t be a day tripper. There are so many good things to do in Nusa Penida island. You need to spend at least 2 days to see the best highlights, even if you don’t do any snorkeling.

I would try to spend 3 or 4 days in the Nusa islands if possible, but you could easily fill a week, especially if you plan to do snorkeling or scuba diving.  

Nusa Penida Itinerary

Here’s what a sample 4-day itinerary for Nusa Penida could look like:

• Day 1: West Nusa Penida . Visit Kelingking Beach , Paluang Cliff , Pererenan Cliff , Banah Cliff Point , and Tembeling Beach .
• Day 2: East Nusa Penida . Visit Diamond Beach , Atuh Beach , Rumah Pohon Treehouse , Teletubbies Hill , and Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple .
• Day 3: Snorkeling + West Penida . Take a half day snorkeling tour and then continue the land tour, visiting Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach , and Smoke Beach.
• Day 4: South Nusa Penida . Visit Suwehan Beach , Sekartaji Cliff (or Nyanyad Beach ), Manta Point Overlook , and Crystal Bay .

Nusa Penida Hotels

Nusa lembongan & ceningan.

While you’re busy exploring Nusa Penida island, don’t forget there are also two other nice islands located next to it — Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, respectively.

The islands of Lembongan and Ceningan are connected to each other by a colorful yellow bridge, and even though they don’t have the epic cliffs and dramatic scenery of Penida, they’re still worth a visit for their nice hotels , seaside cafes, and laidback atmosphere.

It’s easy to go between the Nusa islands with a short and cheap boat ride. Some people even base themselves in Lembongan while touring Penida.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at Saren Villa on the north coast of Nusa Penida , and paid 240k Rupiah ($15 USD) for a private double room with cold A/C, hot shower, and good WiFi.

This is one of the cheapest options in Penida, and it's in a great location near the best restaurants! We were happy.

Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.

What to Do on Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida can roughly be divided into two parts: the West and the East, each offering its own unique blend of breathtaking vistas, adventurous hikes, and pristine beaches. While the Western side of Nusa Penida has long been celebrated for its iconic landscapes, including the famous T-Rex shaped cliff of Kelingking Beach, the Eastern part of the island is an uncharted paradise, just as mesmerizing and filled with hidden gems.

Below we list the best places to explore on both ends of the island.

What to do on the West of Nusa Penida Island

Kelingking Beach , named after its resemblance to a ‘little finger’, is famed for its T-Rex shaped cliff and amazing yellow sand, drawing tourists worldwide. This spot is highly popular, so the best times to visit are early morning before 11:00 am or after 16:00 pm to avoid the crowds from day tours.

The descent to the beach is an adventurous climb, improved but still challenging. It requires good physical fitness and caution due to its steep nature.

Also be aware that many monkeys roam the hills especially in the morning hours. It’s best to keep them on a distance, as they can be cheeky and may steal your sunglasses and other things easy to grab.

Marvel at the Unique Rock Formations of Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong

The rugged, moonlike landscape of Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach, lay directly next to each other and can be visited in one go. Broken Beach is a captivating place, due to its natural arch over the sea. You can often spot manta rays and dolphins swimming in the waters below, adding to its magical ambiance.

Angel’s Billabong is a natural infinity pool you’ll surely encounter on your way to Broken Beach. This place is equally stunning but warrants caution. Unexpected waves can crash in, making swimming here potentially dangerous. Enjoy its beauty from a safe distance, especially during high tide or rough sea conditions.

Snorkel with Manta Rays

Another thing you do not want to miss on the Western side of Nusa Penida, is the wonder of swimming with manta rays in crystal-clear waters. These gentle giants are often found here due to the rich plankton content in the water.

The best time to see them is during the dry season, from April to October. We have done this activity twice, once in January which happened to be perfect and once in December, with no mantas to be found. Weather conditions also play a role; calm and clear days are ideal.

To snorkel with the manta rays, you can book a guided tour. These are available when you are staying on the island of Nusa Penida itself , but they can also be done from Bali , especially Sanur.

Discover the Beauty of Crystal Bay Above and Below Water

Crystal Bay is another amazing bay on Nusa Penida. This place is not only a fantastic snorkelling spot with vibrant corals and tropical fish but also a place where you might spot the elusive mola mola (sunfish) during the right season.

Above water, it’s a paradise for sunset lovers, offering breathtaking views as the sun dips below the horizon and behind the beautiful natural arch.

A less-crowded snorkeling haven, Gamat Bay is perfect for those looking to explore vibrant underwater life in a more serene setting. This bay is often visited during snorkelling tours on Nusa Penida, but one does not necessarily need to visit this place per boat. You can also visit the beach here and snorkel from there.

Amok Sunset

Complete your day exploring the West of Nusa Penida at Amok Sunset , an idyllic location known for its stunning sunsets and amazing deserts. The sky’s transformation into shades of gold and crimson here is truly a photographer’s delight.

Diamond Beach , with its dramatic cliffs and sparkling sands, offers some of the best photo opportunities on the island. The natural staircase carved into the cliff provides access to this stunning beach, though the descent requires caution.

Although an absolute gem, Diamond Beach has become more popular over the past few years, so this is again a place you may want to visit early to beat the crowds. Yet, this place too is brimming with monkeys. As we experienced, they are not aggressive but it is best to keep your distance.

Relax at Atuh Beach

Adjacent to Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach is a more laid-back spot, ideal for relaxation and sunbathing. It offers more amenities than its neighbour, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely day by the sea.

Experience Breathtaking Views at Thousand Island Viewpoint

This viewpoint offers one of the most iconic views in Nusa Penida. The famous Molateng treehouse here provides a unique photo opportunity, but be prepared for a climb to reach this spot. Arriving early, around 7:00 am, is advisable to beat the crowds and have a more peaceful experience.

This place is quite well known for being one of the best photography spots on the planet, which means that generally speaking it is visited by about 200 people a day. This means that during peak hours you will only get about 2 minutes to take pictures.

Venture Further off the Beaten Path to Teletubbies Hill

Teletubbies Hill , named after its resemblance to the rolling hills from the children’s show, showcases the diverse landscape of Nusa Penida. It’s a tranquil spot, perfect for enjoying the island’s natural beauty away from the tourist trails.

It is quite near to Diamond Beach and Thousand Island Viewpoint, so perfect to add as a stop when visiting these other amazing places.

How Long Do You Need to Explore Nusa Penida Island?

As always the answer to this question depends on your own wishes and schedule.

If you ask us: Can Nusa Penida be done in one day? The only way to do this is to pre-book a tour that will take you to the highlights of the West and/or the East , both can be done in one day but be ware that it will be a packed tour and you’ll not be able to visit all the places listed here above.

It will also be difficult to combine a visit to the amazing coastline of Nusa Penida with the snorkelling with the manta rays, but there are some tours that do offer a combination of the two .

If you have time available, we recommend to stay at least three full days on Nusa Penida, one for snorkelling, one to discover the West of the island and one day to discover the East. This will provide enough time to get to know the island a little bit more intimately, relax and soak up some amazing sunsets.

How to Get to Nusa Penida from Bali?

To get to Nusa Penida from Bali you best take a speedboat or ferry from Sanur harbour. These can easily be booked here . The ride to Nusa Penida will take about 30 minutes and cost somewhere between $6 and $10.

Not all ferries are created equal on Bali, for a smooth transit we recommend Angel Billabong.

Stay in Style: Nusa Penida Hotels and Resorts

Nusa Penida may be smaller than Bali, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm and intrigue. Given the island’s somewhat challenging terrain and bumpy roads, where travel often takes longer than expected, selecting the right accommodation is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Stays in West Nusa Penida

Our recommendation is to at least stay a night or two on the West of the island, where you find the most famous sites like Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, and popular snorkelling spots teeming with manta rays. Here, accommodation options cater to a range of preferences and budgets.

For a luxurious stay, ‘ Atalaya ‘ is an exceptional choice. We had a memorable experience at this high-end villa, where comfort meets elegance. For those seeking more economical options, The Tinsi offers cozy and affordable lodging, ensuring a comfortable stay without breaking the bank.

Not only that, due to underdeveloped tourism like Bali, the nature here still retains a pristine charm, which is loved with adventure visitors. One of the small islands is Nusa Penida. If you are familiar with the bustling beaches in Bali, a short trip (1-2-3 days) to the dreamlike small islands is a good suggestion, right? If you would like to escape from the cluttered places of the town, Nusa Penida island is a perfect spot. So, what to do and how to spend 1 day in Nusa Penida – “A Wild Paradise” in Bali? Besides the smoothly blue coastlines are sweeping in cliffs to create the impressive shapes, the nature brings here many supremely beautiful sceneries, attractive enough for travelers from afar.

In addition, you can have an actual experience in a daily life of local residents because of this spot with a still wild and intact scenery due to not so many travelers’ arrival.

1 day in Nusa Penida (Nusa Penida day trip): How to get to Nusa Penida island, Bali?

Nusa Penida is a western island of Bali. There are multiple ways to arrive in Sanur port from the center.

The traffic in Bali has no subway, has frequent traffic jam, and is always overcharged by taxies’ drivers, therefore, we chose Klook as a companion. With over 1 million VND/person only, our team was assisted by a Klook’s staff to take us from the hotel in Kuta area to Sanur port.

Every carrier is here specific and every passenger on the ship shall be supplied one name-tag to identify the ticket of which carrier is from.

If you lose your way, you shall base on the colors of name-tag to follow. One-way (departure/return) ticket price is from 100,000 IDR ~ 175, 000 IDR upon the carrier.

There are 3 departure trips from Sanur port and 3 returning trips from Sampalan harbor in the island for every day.

From Sanur port, the ship spent around one hour to take us to Nusa Penida island. You might rent motorbikes to have your experience in the local residents’ life from faraway island.

The rental price is about 75, 000 IDR ~ 100,000 IDR for the whole day, it’s up to your discussion.

In addition, you can rent a car driven by your own driver and go with a local tour guide. Coconut tree ranges along to the paved roads.

Due to a tour booking on Klook, Mr Wayan & Kadek – two local tour guides have waited for us for a long time. These two guys are Klook’s staffs in Bali, therefore, we didn’t worry anything. The routes on the island were almost asphalted, but are narrow and haven’t many vehicles for travel. The infrastructure of this place still has a lot of inadequacy, however, the natural scenery is ultimately spectacular.

Every smoothly blue coconut trees range is stretched on the winding roads that sections you have to go up and then go down the slopes, to cross the forests, cliffs, coastlines and then continuously pass on the potholes caused by the traces of fallen rock, obviously that is a very fantastic, amazing and also interesting feeling.

Because of only one day on the island, Wayan and Kadek took us to visit the major landscapes such as Kelingking beach, Angela Billabong cliff, Broken beach, and Crystal Bay – the spots mentioned in the schedule of Klook as well.

The formations of Indonesia’s islands were mostly from volcanoes, the strong erosion of seawater deeply striking against the cliffs created several small bays inside the mountainside. Day by day, the sea waves have ridged into rock rapids to become a majestically spectacular scenery.

Nusa Penida 1 day itinerary (Nusa Penida one day itinerary) — Morning – Afternoon: Visit the spots for extremely virtual photography

A first destination where Wayan and Kadek took us was Kelingking Beach. It was nearly one hour to reach to Kelingking Beach from Nusa Penida wharf. You shall be here attracted in an eye-catching natural scene. If you are a believer indulges in photography, this place shall not make you disappointed. Looking down from above, a full shape of “a giant dinosaur” is creeping into the cave, exposes its tail to the sea side.

Left side of such dinosaur is an ellipse shaped small island as an egg, right side is a white sandy beach with deep blue water, sea waves lap on the purely white sand. This is a specific location where should not omit while footing on Nusa Penida island.

Next, Wayan and Kadek waited for us to visit Angel Billabong cliff. From afar, this cliff looks as a big pool formed by the lava eruption inside a volcano. The pool is located between two cliffs that the interior is the azure jade water.

Momentarily, the big waves overflowed from the sea, hit and covered the cliffs and then melted, the whole pool was risen to a fully white color as some giant snow hills in a vision that you usually watch in films.

Broken Beach is not far away from there. This place has a legendary stone bridge dividing a border between outside of the sea and inside of the deep blue natural pool. Day by day, the seawater has overflowed in the pool through a huge hole under the corrosive mountain edge, likely such stone was broken by someone. That is a reason that people named Broken Beach.

If you have time to stay on the island, you can walk along on that stone bridge to see the sunset. Nobody can know when was such bridge from, just know that this is a masterpiece which the nature brought to this island, anybody who came to Bali must drop in this bridge.

Nusa Penida island day trip (Nusa Penida one day trip) — Afternoon – Evening: Enjoy the delicious food of the locality and visit Crystal Bay

We had lunch in a local restaurant on the island. This tour price of Klook included lunch fee, so you don’t need to worry about food and drink. This meal including one dish (cooked rice/noodles) accompanied by drinks. This restaurant’s space is quite luxurious enough for your unreal life under the sultry weather in the equatorial country.

After lunch, our final destination was Crystal Bay, a landscape having an extreme wild beach with the crystal azure water. However, Crystal bay does not possess a white sandy beach as same as the other sea areas due to impaction of the volcanic lava eruption. The waves are adequately strong, are washed over ashore for every time, you can be scratched caused by fragments of stones or corals colliding on feet if you are not careful. Therefore, you should arrange the personal protection equipment such as glasses, life-jacket, etc. for swimming.

Being known that we liked taking photos, Wayan and Kadek earnestly kept stuffs for our seriously characteristic experience.

We only had one day to discover Nusa Penida, therefore there were a few of spot we went. If there is more time, you should spend 2-3 days to explore all the islands and also the other famous places such as seeing of sunset at Banah Cliff Point, swimming in Tembeling Forest pool, Rumah Pohon tree house, Peguyangan (Guyangan) waterfall, Suwehan beach, Atuh beach, Bukit Teletubbies hill, swinging experience at Saren Cliff Point or coral snorkeling in Gamat bay and etc.

Destination

Diamond Beach has views of karst cliffs that are shaped like gems. The attraction of Diamond Beach also comes from the cluster of blue sea water and soft white sand. Diamond Beach has a fairly steep seabed contour, if you want to swim it is better to choose a place around the beach. Tourists can also take advantage of the stairs to the beach as one of the Instagenic photo spots with a blue background of sea water decorated with amazing rock cliffs.

Raja Lima has a stunning panorama that combines views of the sea and large chunks of coral reef. Thus, most visitors tend to do sightseeing and photography there.

The Molenteng Tree House is located next to the diamond beach in Nusa Penida, this tourist spot is very attractive to tourists because from the tree house you will be able to enjoy beautiful views of the cliffs and beaches. Building this tree house is actually very simple. Stand on a tree whose trunk has been cut down so that the house can stand upright. To reach the top of the house, a wooden bridge and stairs have been installed to help climb.

Angel's billabong is the mouth of a river before its water flows into the open sea. Here, it is a natural pool embedded in the cliff. It is filled with clear water at high tide. And natural pools appear at low tide. The water is very clear and quite fun to swim at low tide. Avoid swimming when the sea is rising or in pairs.

Broken Beach which is locally known as Pasih Uug Beach is one of the most beautiful and most visited tourist destinations on Nusa Penida Island. Unique, serene and great views, which is a great place for travel photographers and panorama seekers. Broken Beach (Pasih Uug) has a large natural pool, formed from the abrasion of the sea and the collapse of limestone hills.

Kelingking Beach is one of Nusa Penida's most famous spots. The place is indeed very spectacular and truly amazing. ANGELS BILLABONG

Angels Billabong is one of Nusa Penida’s most popular attractions.

The rocks are quite sharp and rugged getting down into the infinity pool at Angels Billabong, but once you step in, the surface of the rocks under the water is smooth and easy to walk on.

BROKEN BEACH

A naturally carved-out bridge stretches over turquoise waters that flow in and out of the archway, hence the name Broken Beach.

KELINGKING BEACH

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to and it’s the best location for sunset to finish off your one day trip Nusa Penida.

Kelingking Beach, also known as Kelingking Secret Point, is located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

The reason why Kelingking Beach is such a popular location is that the cliffs form the shape of a T-Rex.

The head of the T-Rex can be seen on the left of the bay and the body and tail wrap around to the right.

Access to Kelingking Beach is possible but explore at your own risk.

There are stairs and railings made out of timber that lead down the spine of Keling King to the beach, though don’t completely rely on this and take your time when descending down to the shoreline.

Kelingking Beach has multiple viewpoints around the edge of the cliffs, offering spectacular views up and down the coastline of Nusa Penida.

Atuh Beach is one of Nusa Penida’s most iconic locations, featuring a large cove with crystalline waters, golden sands, and a coconut palm forest.

Atuh Beach is located on the farmost eastern point of Nusa Penida Island. From the main town of Toya Pakeh, it’s approximately a 45-minute drive to reach Atuh Beach.

Pantai Atuh Beach can be accessed from either the left-hand side or the right-hand side of the cliffs via the concrete steps that are cut into the side of the mountain.

The entrance fee you will have to pay to visit Atuh Beach is 10,000 IDR.

It’s the perfect spot to go for a swim to cool off and beach bum under one of many straw umbrellas that line the shoreline.

If you’re looking for a fun-fuelled couple of hours on your day trip, be sure not to miss Atuh Beach on your itinerary – I guarantee you will enjoy it just as much as I did!

DIAMOND BEACH

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida is hands down the most amazing beach I have ever been to, and that’s saying something!

A glistening white sand beach surrounded by verdant cliffs and turquoise water, Diamond Beach is a hard-to-beat destination and one of the best places to visit.

When you arrive at the car park you will have to pay a small entrance fee of 10,000 IDR to the parking lot attendant sitting in his booth before making your way down the stairs to Diamond Beach.

The way down to Diamond Beach Penida only takes around ten minutes before emerging on the sandy shoreline.

A small warung resides down on Diamond Beach where you can buy cold refreshments and local dishes such as mie goreng and nasi goreng for as little as $3 to $5.

You can also have a turn on the Diamond Beach Nusa Penida swing which is strung up between two coconut palms down by the beach.

RUMAH POHON TREE HOUSE

Ruma Pohon Tree House has become very popular thanks to Instagram and it’s one of the best places to visit on your day trip to Nusa Penida!

At the jump-off point, you will find a small ticket office where you will have to pay 5,000 IDR for the entrance ticket to Rumah Pohon Tree House.

The hike down the ridge takes no more than five or ten minutes to the first viewpoint that overlooks the bay known as Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu).

Once you are satisfied with marveling at Thousand Island viewpoint, continue the adventure further down the ridge and you will see the Rumah Pohon Tree House on your left-hand side.

To capture the perfect Instagram photo of the Nusa Penida Tree House you can stand on the hill on the right-hand side of the track to get the best angle.

TELETUBBIES HILL

GOA GIRI PUTRI CAVE

Goa Giri Putri Cave is one of Nusa Penida’s most underrated tourist spots but not to be missed.

There is a small car park at the entrance and here you will also be asked to wear a sarong which you can rent for 5,000 IDR and the entrance fee to the temple is 20,000 IDR.

Take the winding staircase midway up the mountain and you’ll be greeted by a man that will bless you with some holy water on the forehead.

I was absolutely jaw-dropped at how insanely huge the Pura Goa Giri Putri cave is, my guess is 300 meters long and 15 meters tall.

We wandered deeper into the Pura Goa Giri Putri cave and stumbled upon a small group of locals sitting in prayer around an altar.

Incense filled the air and we pretty much went unnoticed as we walked around the cave.

Follow the pathway to the end of the Goa Giri Putri cave to a viewpoint of a small village in the lush green mountainside.

You can exit the cave here or head back the same way you came to the parking lot.

MANTA POINT SNORKELING

Snorkeling at Manta Point Nusa Penida is one of the most epic experiences you could ever have.

These underwater giants are incredibly humble and to be able to swim with them is a moment you will never forget!

I recommend booking your Manta Point snorkeling tour the day before to secure your spot on the boat. The tour starts between 7:00 am – 8:00 am and finishes around 12:00 pm.

The tour includes all snorkeling equipment and it will stop at three different snorkeling sites – Manta Point, Toya Pakeh Wall, and Crystal Bay.

These majestic creatures are absolutely incredible! They glide effortlessly through the ocean and are really friendly to swim with.

The manta rays at Manta Point can be quite intimidating to begin with due to their body size of up to 5 meters, though you will soon realize they are harmless, humble giants.

BANAH CLIFF VIEWPOINT

Banah Cliff Nusa is one of the best viewpoints along the southwest coastline of Nusa Penida Island!

There are not just not one but two incredible viewpoints at Banah Cliff.

At the jump-off point to the right is the panoramic view and to the left is the official Banah Cliff.

The panoramic viewpoint at Banah Cliff Nusa Penida faces west and offers extreme views of surrounding cliffs, perched high above the ocean.

On a clear day, you can actually see the tail of the T-Rex at Keling King Beach.

Be very careful when taking photos at Banah Cliff as there is no safety barrier to protect you from falling hundreds of feet to the ground. Know your limits.

TEMBELING BEACH & LAGOONS

Tembeling features a number of cool things to see including pristine white sand beaches, tropical rainforests, natural lagoons, hidden caves, and cliff-jumping spots.

The main attraction at Tembeling Nusa Penida is the freshwater blue lagoon nestled in the Tembeling Forest.

This freshwater natural pool is the perfect spot for a swim on the way down to Tembeling Beach.

You can also discover the hidden cave and secret beach just a short 2-minute walk from the blue lagoon through the Tembeling Forest.

There is also a freshwater jacuzzi pool that the locals have creatively built on the edge of the cliffs.

And of course, there’s Tembeling Beach where a number of tidal pools can be found to take a dip but swimming in the waves here is not recommended.

PEGUYANGAN BLUE STAIRS & WATERFALL

Last but not least on your DIY Nusa Penida trip, the ultimate adventure awaits at Peguyangan Waterfall and the Instafamous Blue Stairs.

At the jump-off point for Peguyanngan Waterfall, you will have to pay a small parking fee of 5,000 IDR.

There are 750 blue stairs that are impressively constructed into the side of the cliff giving access to Peguyangan Waterfall.

There are several viewpoints that make for great photo opportunities as you make your way down to Peguyangan Waterfall.

After a 20-minute hike down the blue stairs, you’ll arrive at the sacred water temple that has four waterspouts.

The waterfall itself is not your common 50-meter meter waterfall, like those you will find in  Bali , but rather a waterspout between a crack in a rock where crystal clear water flows out into tiered rock pools and over the cliff edge into the ocean.

HOW TO GET TO NUSA PENIDA?

Bali to nusa penida:.

Fast Boats operate daily to Nusa Penida from Sanur Harbor in Southeast Bali. You can book the fast boat online  in advance to guarantee the lowest price.

The fast boat ticket to the Nusa Penida also includes a hotel pick-up from your accommodation in Bali and a drop-off directly to the pier at Sanur Beach Port.

The boat trip takes approximately 45 minutes from Bali to Nusa Penida Island.

NUSA LEMBONGAN TO NUSA PENIDA:

You can also take a boat to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan if you happen to be exploring this island first.

A boat from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida will cost you around 50,000 IDR.

You can organize the boat via your accommodation on Nusa Lembongan or simply head to the main beach port on Lembongan Island and ask one of the boat companies located down on the beachfront.

Alternatively, you can book a Nusa Penida day trip from Nusa Lembongan, and I’ll tell you more in the following sections.

HOW TO GET AROUND NUSA PENIDA?

Nusa Penida is quite a large island and it can take up to one hour to get from one side of the island to the other.

The best mode of transport to visit all the tourist spots in Nusa Penida is by scooter.

When you arrive at Toya Pakeh harbor in Nusa Penida there are a number of scooter rental shops on the beachfront that will be able to sort you out with some wheels.

I paid 70,000 IDR per day for a scooter rental that came with a full tank of gas so you can expect to pay something around this price.

Be sure to get a helmet as an extra precaution for riding on the roads in Nusa Penida as they are not very well maintained.

CAN YOU TAKE A NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM ULUWATU?

The ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida departs from Sanur Port , which is in Denpasar, and you’ll have to take a taxi to get there.

However, when joining a day trip to Nusa Penida , transportation is included and you can let the guide know where your hotel is, and they will pick you up, which is so convenient.

This is the best option when it comes to taking a Uluwatu to Nusa Penida day trip.

The same applies to Nusa Dua to Nusa Penida day trip.

COST OF A NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP

The cost of a Nusa Penida 1 day trip from Bali depends on the option you go for – Let me clarify here below.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP

A day trip around Nusa Penida (whether you choose the Nusa Penida West or Nusa Penida East tour) will cost you about $35 per person, including transportation and the tour guide.

The catch? These tours start in Nusa Penida, so you’ll have to get there from Bali on your own and pay the ferry tickets.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM BALI

On the other hand, when booking an All-inclusive Nusa Penida day trip from Sanur, you can expect to pay around $100 per person.

While this is more expensive, it includes the ferry ticket from Bali and back, lunch, and the entrance fees to all attractions, making it much more worth it if you ask me!

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM LEMBONGAN

Nusa Penida day trips from Lembongan cost about $37 per person, including transfers from Lembongan, snorkeling sessions, and a mangrove trip.

Note that, usually, Nusa Penida tours from Lembongan do not include any sightseeing but rather snorkeling only, so keep that in mind.

A trip to Bali is not complete without visiting Nusa Penida Island. Are you wondering how to get from Seminyak to Nusa Penida if you want to escape the bustling streets of Seminyak and have an amazing adventure?

Well, there are a few choices, but the best one is to go on a day trip to Nusa Penida, a beautiful island off the coast of Bali.

With its beautiful cliffs, white-sand beaches, and clear, blue waters full of sea life, Nusa Penida is a tropical paradise.

I hope this post will help you make the most of your day trip from Seminyak to Nusa Penida by taking you through the highlights of this fascinating place.

A Day Trip to Nusa Penida from Seminyak

To fall in love with Bali, you must leave the dirty beaches and touristy streets of places like Kuta and explore the (kind of) untouched nature of the islands in the middle and out to sea.

The best way to do that is to take a day trip to Nusa Penida. A day trip can be planned from most of Bali’s beach suburbs on the main island, like Kuta, Seminyak, and others.

Alternatively, you can book online at least one day ahead of time. You can make reservations online with a different of ferry companies.

It might not be the cheapest day trip in Bali, but it might be the most memorable. I would recommend booking through Klook . We never had any issues, and you can trust them.

How to Get to Nusa Penida from Seminyak

Most boats leave from Sanur Harbour, which is the best place to start your trip to Nusa Penida. Private and public boats look alike, so if you don’t have time to stay on the island for a few days like we did, I suggest you go on an epic day trip. It looks like there are two main-day trips.

BEST NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP TOURS

These are the two most well-known Nusa Penida tours. We took the Bali Nusa Penida Tour, meeting at Sanur Harbour.

Please keep in mind that this only includes the ferry ride from Sanur to Nusa Penida. You will need to rent a motorcycle or private car to get around the island on your own.

• Nusa Penida Tour from Bali (Meet Up at Sanur Harbor). It is a popular day trip from Bali to Penida, with all the highlights.
• From Bali: Swim with Manta Rays in Nusa Penida. The most incredible experience was swimming with giant mantas.

The first tour is called the BEST Nusa Penida Tour from Bali (Meet Up at Sanur Harbor) , and it essentially covers all of the most famous beaches and viewpoints on both the Nusa Penida East Tour and the Nusa Penida West Tour in a single day, along with snorkelling opportunities. This is the one we took.

A DAY TRIP TO NUSA PENIDA: THE DETAILS

As long as you get to Sanur Harbour on time, getting on the ferry is pretty quick. We reserved our ferry tickets two days ahead of time, so we didn’t have to worry about finding the right tour on the spot. Instead, we went straight to the tour company to get our tickets.

(This tour did not operate in the same manner as other locations where you had to present your QR code before proceeding.) You will need to get a bracelet or ticket in person, and you will need to keep it safe until you get back to Sanur.

Otherwise, you might not be able to get on the ferry. Make sure you remember this, even if you book ahead of time.

Taking a Day Tour to Nusa Penida from Bali

Also, please remember that the Nusa Penida day trip tour we booked did not include getting to and from our hotel. Those things will need to be arranged separately. I suggest taking a Grab taxi or a scooter to get to Sanur Harbour.

The boat ride from Bali’s Sanur Harbour takes 30 minutes, so if you’re staying in Canggu, Seminyak, or Kuta, getting to Nusa Penida quickly for a day trip is easy.

We stayed in Ubud during our day trip to Nusa Penida, so we left our villa an hour early and got to the harbour by 8:45 am.

EXPLORING NUSA PENIDA: What you can expect to see on a Day Trip to Nusa Penida

We arrived early and reached Nusa Penida island by 10:15 a.m. You’ll have to explore the island on your own using a motorcycle or a private car once you get there.

Just keep in mind where the tour company spot is, and pay close attention to the time when you need to return to board the boat to return to Sanur Harbour.

The Best and cheapest way to have a great day trip on Nusa Penida

To get a better bargain, move a little further towards the waterfront boat stalls from the tour companies’ booths. Most importantly, you should know which side of Nusa Penida island you want to explore: the east or the west.

This will tell you how much a taxi or scooter ride will cost. If you don’t have experience riding, I don’t suggest getting a scooter because the roads on the island are a bit bumpy.

Do not think you can see both sides of the island in one day; that is impossible on a day trip. If you genuinely want an entirely immersive experience, you must choose one or the other. Most importantly, bring cash because Nusa Penida doesn’t have many ATMs.

Natural attractions of Nusa Penida

Kelingking beach.

You have probably seen a lot of pictures of Kelingking Beach on Instagram, even if you don’t use it. When you visit the viewpoint above the beach, you will understand why it’s a travel blogger’s dream location on Instagram.

However, it’s also a great place to visit for those who don’t feel the need to make their friends envious of their beautiful travel photos. It’s pretty amazing to look at, even in real life.

The path down to the beach wasn’t very safe, but most people, including my husband and me, were happy with the view from above. I wouldn’t suggest going down unless you are a fitness expert. It’s not for everyone.

After enjoying the breathtaking views of Kelingking Beach, we had lunch at one of the eateries that are close to the cliffs that overlook the shore.

There aren’t many restaurants around, so this is an excellent place to eat if you want to see the highlights of the side you’ve selected and save time. Naturally, Kelingking Beach is the first thing you see when you get there.

The next stops on our tour were Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong, located on the western side of Nusa Penida island (since we only saw this side of the island, I can only speak for the side we did visit, if that makes sense).

Our driver took us there. The fact that these two are in the same place and can be reached in five minutes is fantastic. There’s no reason to worry about driving in a hurry.

You would probably need an hour to see both and enjoy the incredible natural formations.

BROKEN BEACH

When you get to the places where Broken and Angel’s Billabong are, it’s up to you which one you would love to see first—they are 5 minutes apart! Broken Beach is on your left.

It looks like a round pond with the ocean rushing below a rock bridge.

The name comes from the way the rocks around this beach are shaped, which looks like an arch.

This arch-shaped thing looks like a hole in the wall at first glance, which makes it look like it’s broken.

It’s a great place to stroll around, but if you want to see more of the ocean, make sure to stroll around the nearby rocks.

You should know that there might be other tourists there depending on when you get there, so be ready to wait a little while to take pictures.

ANGEL’S BILLABONG

To the right of Broken Beach, around the coast, is Angel’s Billabong, a beautiful natural feature on Bali, Indonesia’s island of Nusa Penida.

This one-of-a-kind rock formation on the southwest coast of the island forms a peaceful natural infinity pool with a view of the huge Indian Ocean.

The pool’s clear water makes it a safe and peaceful place to swim at low tide, revealing a fascinating underwater world.

CRYSTAL BAY

Our day trip to Nusa Penida ended with a visit to Crystal Bay Beach. It looks like this is where most tours end, whether they are private or with a group.

If I’m being honest, though, this beach wasn’t very interesting. As you might guess, it was very crowded, and we didn’t like it at all.

There was no shade at all, but they did have sunbeds with umbrellas that I think you could rent.

At this point, though, you won’t have time to rest because you need to get back to where the tour company is on the harbour so they can take you back to Sunar.

We did go swimming, though, because it was too hot and we needed to cool off. They also have some simple shower rooms that cost less than £1 or $1.

This island, Nusa Penida, is one of the most beautiful spots in Bali. If you’ve read this far, you probably already know why you shouldn’t miss this place.

If you choose to go, you should know that it is a fantastic location for unwinding and taking in Indonesia’s breathtaking scenery.

H ave you ever seen photos from Bali’s coastline where if you look closely, the water and cliffs resemble a Tyrannosaurus Rex head? Did you ever see images of crystal-clear blue water with a ridge that appears to be shaped like a diamond from the water? These popular destinations are Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida. It’s the largest offshore island in Bali , just southeast of the main island.

Both of these destinations have become popular tourist attractions because of social media and travel influencers.
