4 things you'll love about Royal Caribbean's new Odyssey of the Seas

Gene Sloan

Call it the Royal Caribbean ship that got lost in the shuffle.

The Miami-based line's new Odyssey of the Seas , which was christened Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, originally was scheduled to debut way back in 2020. But then COVID-19 happened, and its arrival was delayed multiple times .

So many times, in fact, that even cruise industry watchers like me sort of forgot about it.

It didn't help that the 16-deck-high ship finally began sailing out of Fort Lauderdale at the end of July -- with no media unveiling -- during the very same week that Carnival Cruise Line's giant new Mardi Gras was starting up service. Topped with the first roller coaster at sea , Mardi Gras was the story of the summer in the cruise world, and it sucked up a lot of the attention.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Still, as I saw firsthand over the weekend during the ship's long-delayed unveiling event for media and travel agents, Odyssey of the Seas isn't a ship to be ignored.

Indeed, in my book, it's one of the most alluring Royal Caribbean ships to date.

A familiar design

Like all of the Royal Caribbean ships that have debuted over the past decade, Odyssey of the Seas is a massive vessel loaded with all sorts of fun zones that make it particularly appealing to families with kids. You'll find everything from multiple pool areas and a kiddie splash zone on board to a skydiving simulator, a virtual reality bungee trampoline, a rock-climbing wall and a surfing pool.

And that's just on its open-air top decks.

Step inside Odyssey of the Seas, and you'll encounter a bumper car pavilion that doubles as a sports court and can transform into a trapeze school and a laser tag arena, plus all sorts of other amusements for both children and adults.

If, like me, you've been on a lot of Royal Caribbean ships over the years, you'll recognize many of the aforementioned features as hallmarks of the line's Quantum Class series of vessels. Odyssey of the Seas is the fifth and final ship in the series, which began rolling out in 2014 with the debut of the then-groundbreaking Quantum of the Seas.

Related: The 6 classes of Royal Caribbean ships, explained

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

But as I saw during my visit to the ship, Odyssey of the Seas isn't a carbon copy of the earlier Quantum Class vessels. Across the ship's public decks, there are tweaks both big and small to the basic Quantum Class design -- a design that many cruise writers (including me) already have heralded in recent years as one of the best from a major big-ship line.

Built to hold up to 5,510 passengers with every berth filled, Odyssey of the Seas isn't for everybody. If you prefer intimate, uncrowded cruise vessels, it's probably not for you. But if you're a fan of the latest crop of floating megaresorts with every sort of amusement known to humans, Odyssey of the Seas surely deserves a place on your list of new vessels to try.

Below, a look at some of the features that set this vessel apart:

A revamped top deck

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

Royal Caribbean ships are known for some of the liveliest, most activity-packed top decks at sea, and Odyssey of the Seas is no exception. In fact, it offers one of the most enticing mixes of deck-top attractions around.

Like earlier Quantum Class vessels, the ship boasts open-air areas that are home to a FlowRider surfing pool, a skydiving simulator (dubbed RipCord by iFLY), a rock-climbing wall and a giant mechanical arm called North Star that takes passengers up into the sky for aerial views. But the ship's designers also found a way to squeeze in a virtual reality bungee trampoline attraction called Sky Pad -- something you won't find on any other Quantum Class ship based in North America.

Related: The ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean

In addition, Odyssey of the Seas offers a new-for-the-Quantum Class, Caribbean-themed central pool area with colorful lounge chairs, umbrellas and (extra-charge) cabanas surrounding two main pools and a kiddie area called Spealashaway Bay. This main pool area also is home to a laidback, two-deck-high Caribbean-themed bar zone called The Lime and Coconut (a concept that first debuted in 2019 on Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas).

On previous Quantum Class ships, one of the two pools in this central pool area was covered by a glass magrodome. But both of the pools on Odyssey of the Seas are open to the sun.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

My take is that this is a smart change for a vessel that's scheduled to spend the coming year sailing in the Caribbean during the winter and the warm waters of the Mediterranean during the summer.

Of course, it could morph into a drawback if Odyssey of the Seas ever is redeployed to a cooler destination such as Alaska, where an enclosed pool area can come in handy.

As is the case with previous Quantum Class ships, the top deck of Odyssey of the Seas also is home to an adults-only Solarium.

More family-focused fun

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

In addition to all of the family-friendly top-deck attractions mentioned above, Odyssey of the Seas also is home to the largest SeaPlex ever on a Royal Caribbean ship. These giant, multiuse activity complexes, only found on Quantum Class ships, offer everything from bumper cars to basketball and even trapeze lessons.

But on Odyssey of the Seas, the SeaPlex also brings what Royal Caribbean is billing as the first fully immersive 4D virtual reality experience at sea.

Called the Virtual Adventure Zone, the venue wasn't running when I was on board the ship, so I didn't get to try it out firsthand. But the experience involves donning a virtual reality headset and virtual reality gloves and entering a pitch-black room with up to three fellow players. Once inside, you work together on an inside-a-faux-world group mission (welcome to the Metaverse!).

Honestly, I'm sort of happy the venue was closed after reading the lengthy warning sign outside the attraction that was topped with a "Severity of Experience HIGH" declaration and a warning that "disorientation is possible." If this is what fully immersive 4D virtual reality is all about, I want no part of it.

Related: The 12 cruise ships with the most over-the-top attractions

What I did try, though, was a mini-burger and wings at the nearby Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade -- another family-friendly venue that's been added into the SeaPlex area on Odyssey of the Seas. I can declare that the severity of experience there was low, even if the level of yumminess was high. I just shouldn't have have eaten all those cheese-covered fries.

New dining options

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

Odyssey of the Seas harbors many of the iconic Royal Caribbean eateries that you'll find on other Quantum Class ships, including a Chops Grille steakhouse, an Izumi sushi restaurant and the fanciful food-serving Wonderland. But you'll also find several new venues that haven't appeared on most if not all of the other ships in the series.

Among the most notable is Giovanni's Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar, which takes the place of the Italian-serving Jamie Oliver restaurant found on all four of the other Quantum Class ships. Giovanni's serves up an array of pasta dishes and a (very limited) number of meat and chicken dishes. But we suspect the casual and family-style restaurant will make its name on Odyssey of the Seas for its pizza offerings, which are at the core of its menu.

Royal Caribbean brought in a well-known Italian pizzaiolo (that's a fancy Italian word for pizza expert) to help craft what they're boasting is the best pizza at sea.

As someone who spent part of his childhood living in Italy, where I was exposed to some of the best pizza anywhere, I feel confident in saying that they are, indeed, delivering something truly top-notch. The only issue I have with Giovanni's is the sky-high cost of the restaurant, which has been set at $49.99 per adult, not including drinks (kids pay just $10).

Maybe they can get it. There aren't all that many tables at Giovanni's to fill. But $49.99 per adult seems steep to me, given that my wife and I can gorge on an equally wonderful pizza at our local Blue Mountain Pizza outlet in Weaverville, North Carolina, for under $25 for the two of us, not including drinks.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

Odyssey of the Seas also is the first Quantum Class vessel in North America with a Teppanyaki restaurant. I'll admit that I find Teppanyaki restaurants about as hokey as can be (and generally steer clear of them). But kids love them, and the venue's arrival is just another sign that Royal Caribbean is leaning in ever more to the family market with its onboard offerings.

And new entertainment, too

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

One thing that's all new on Odyssey of the Seas (at least for a North American crowd) is its marquee entertainment. None of the main shows you'll find in its giant Royal Theater (it can hold nearly 1,300 people) or its innovative two70 entertainment space are repeats from earlier Royal Caribbean ships based in North America (though some have played on an Asia-based Royal Caribbean ship). And they're all elaborate productions that are keeping with Royal Caribbean's reputation for some of the best shows at sea.

The standout production on the ship, by far, is The Effectors show in the Royal Theater. It's a big, Royal Caribbean-created musical tale of superheroes taking on an evil nemesis that dazzles with a combination of video animation, live actors and next-level special effects (we're talking characters shooting beams of light from their hands and other lighting effects that are created with synchronized, lit-up drones that fly above the audience).

Regular readers know I'm no big fan of cruise ship shows. I often have trouble sticking around to the end of them. But the special effects I saw during The Effectors show (along with the eye-catching costumes and catchy pop tunes -- I admit I'm a sucker for Kelly Clarkson) had me glued to my seat to the last standing ovation.

Also dazzling, as I expected, was The Book, the new part-video, part-live action and very high-tech show in seven "chapters" that Royal Caribbean has created for Odyssey of the Seas.

For those who haven't been on a Quantum Class ship before, the two70 venues found on the five vessels in the series are truly groundbreaking spaces. Two decks high with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer stunning, 270-degree views (hence the name two70), they transform at night into high-tech, amphitheater-like showrooms with giant wraparound screens, moving robotic screens and trap doors above and below that allow for aerialists, singers and dancers to appear right in front of theatergoers.

Bottom line

A lot of the buzz around Royal Caribbean right now is related to its next new ship, Wonder of the Seas . Scheduled to debut in just over three months, it'll be the new world's largest cruise ship and chock full of over-the-top attractions that will make it a top pick for megaship lovers.

But that doesn't mean cruise fans shouldn't get excited about the line's long-delayed but finally sailing Odyssey of the Seas. While not quite as big as Wonder of the Seas, Odyssey of the Seas is a megaship that is right up there with the best of them.

Press Releases

An epic odyssey continues – royal caribbean welcomes brand-new ship.

The Game-changing Cruise Line Takes Delivery of Odyssey of the Seas

MIAMI, March 31, 2021* – Setting course for a lifetime of adventure, Royal Caribbean International’s Odyssey of the Seas completed the final chapter in its construction odyssey today. The highly anticipated marvel officially became the 25 th ship in the cruise line’s award-winning fleet, following a virtual rendition of the time-honored maritime tradition known as a delivery ceremony. Odyssey will now set the stage for a bold, new way to vacation when it debuts from first-time homeport Haifa, Israel in May 2021 and Fort Lauderdale, Florida in November.

Royal Caribbean Group Chairman and CEO Richard D. Fain, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International Michael Bayley, and Master of Odyssey of the Seas Captain Per Kristoffersen received the new ship from Meyer Werft Yard’s Managing Partner Bernard Meyer and Managing Director Jan Meyer in the customary handover ceremony with a virtual twist.

"Receiving Odyssey of the Seas into the Royal Caribbean family is a welcomed breath of fresh air. The ingenuity, passion and hard work our dedicated crew, teams on land and partners at Meyer Werft put into building a new ship always deliver, and to pull it off so well during a time unlike any other is incredible,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “We are looking forward to delivering the memorable vacations we’re known for today on a ship that will mark several firsts for us, from making Israel a first-time homeport to introducing Quantum Ultra Class to North America. Every new ship is a blank slate to go bolder and be different, and Odyssey is bringing the very best of the new and guest-favorites across two continents for the years to come.”

Later today, fans will have front-row seats to the ceremony celebration during an untraditional Facebook premiere event – a first in the cruise line’s 52-year history. In store is a truly global lineup that includes the ship’s blessing led by Seafarers’ House at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, a show-stopping performance from signature venue Two70 on board Quantum of the Seas sailing in Singapore, and executives of Royal Caribbean in Florida and Meyer Werft Yard in Papenburg, Germany. The celebration exclusively takes place on Royal Caribbean International’s Facebook page at 5 p.m. EDT.

Odyssey is the second Quantum Ultra Class ship, and just in time for summer, it will welcome Royal Caribbean’s first guests to cruise from Israel on sailings where travelers above the age of 18 and crew members are fully vaccinated. Israeli residents can embark on 3- to 7-night getaways through October to visit sun-soaked destinations in the Mediterranean, including Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos and Athens, Greece and Limassol, Cyprus. Following its inaugural summer season, Odyssey  will embark on a transatlantic crossing for its North American debut this November, where it’s slated to offer 6- and 8-night Caribbean itineraries from Fort Lauderdale to idyllic ports of call like Aruba, Curacao and Perfect Day at CocoCay , Royal Caribbean’s game-changing private island destination in The Bahamas.

Weighing 169,000 gross tons and measuring 1,138 feet (347 meters) long and 135 feet (41 meters) wide, Odyssey  will be the newest and largest ship to homeport in Israel and the first of its kind to call Florida its home later this year. Vacationers of all ages are in for a combination of 12 all-new and first-to-brand experiences as well as the signature adventures guests know and love, including:

  • Caribbean-inspired pool deck – Sporting a whole new look across two decks, Odyssey’s two open-air pools, four whirlpools and Splashaway Bay, anchored by a Quantum Ultra Class first – The Lime & Coconut bar – are designed for all travelers to enjoy the sun and stars in style.
  • SeaPlex – The next-generation of a longtime Quantum Class favorite, this SeaPlex is the largest indoor and outdoor activity center at sea, and debuts this venue’s first  Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade .
  • Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar and Teppanyaki – Two Royal Caribbean restaurants new to North America join the varied lineup of dining options on board. The fresh take on the cruise line’s signature trattoria is the first to introduce its new wine bar concept while the other serves up East Asian flavors in the traditional Japanese style for which its named.
  • Action-packed top deck – Returning guest-favorites include the gravity-defying  SkyPad virtual reality bungee trampoline adventure, FlowRider surf simulator, skydiving with  RipCord by iFly , and the iconic  North Star  all-glass observation capsule that boasts 360-degree views from 300 feet above sea level.
  • One-of-a-kind entertainment – In typical Royal Caribbean fashion, Odyssey’s full-scale productions take top billing in teched-out venues such as the Royal Theater and Two70 , where immersive technology, unparalleled special effects and world-leading performers and aerialists take the stage alongside six agile  Roboscreens  for a multidimensional live show.

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's 2 largest cruise ships. They were shockingly similar for the $1,000 difference

  • Royal Caribbean operates many of the cruise industry's biggest ships.
  • Icon of the Seas  launched in January, dethroning its predecessor, Wonder of the Seas, as the world's largest.
  • Here's how the two mega-ships compare in size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Insider Today

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship darling, was deemed a success before it was even built.

In January, the highly anticipated vessel — complete with more than 40 bars and restaurants, a six-slide waterpark, and a waterfall — set sail, dethroning its less than two-year-old precursor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's largest cruise ship.

Before its debut, Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, had already repeatedly called Icon its "best-selling product" yet. The company experienced its largest booking day ever when reservations opened for Icon of the Seas more than a year before its launch, it said

Despite all of this fanfare, you might be surprised by how similar it is to its predecessor.

I've sailed on both ships. Let's see how Icon and Wonder compare in six categories: size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Both ships stunt the size of their competitors.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

Wonder of the Seas debuted in 2022 as the then-world's largest cruise liner, measuring 235,600 gross-tons, 1,188 feet-long, and 18 decks-tall. The ship can accommodate up to 9,288 people, including 2,204 crew.

Icon of the Seas is, comparatively, 13,063 gross-tons heavier, eight feet longer, and two decks taller. It can sail up to 9,950 people, including 2,350 crew, although it's 52 feet less wide than its predecessor.

Both vessels feel more like amusement parks than traditional cruise ships.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

Royal Caribbean invited me on complimentary, non-revenue sailings on both ships: two nights on Wonder in late 2022 and three nights on Icon in January.

I spent most of my time lost, overwhelmed, and exhausted.

It's no surprise both ships are operating weeklong itineraries this year. Any less, and you might not have time to experience all the activities and restaurants on your list.

Like other Royal Caribbean ships, Wonder and Icon have eight 'neighborhoods' that serve separate purposes.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

The new ship shares three of Wonder of the Seas' neighborhoods : Central Park, Royal Promenade, and Suite.

Icon's other five — Thrill Island , Surfside, Hideaway, Chill Island, and AquaDome — are a first for the cruise line.

Many of the ships' amenities overlap, but in differing quantities.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

Wonder has three waterslides. Icon has a six-slide waterpark complete with rafting and racing options.

Both have increasingly popular cruise amenities like decks-long dry slides, mini-golf courses, rock climbing walls, and playgrounds.

But instead of Wonder of the Seas' zipline , Icon of the Seas has Crown's Edge, a thrilling agility course with a small zipline that leaves travelers dangling 154 feet above the ocean.

Wonder’s Boardwalk neighborhood was my go-to.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

Boardwalk delivered exactly as it had promised: an open-air space grounded by wood-planked floors, a hot dog stand, a sweets store, and kitschy, colorful decor.

Icon of the Seas' Surfside , designed for families with young children, felt like its closest dupe.

Both neighborhoods had a carousel, an outdoor playground, and family-friendly dining. But Surfside was more toddler-friendly, as suggested by the children's water play area and nighttime story readings.

On to entertainment: Both mega-ships have ice skating performances and exciting multi-disciplinary shows at the AquaTheater.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

But travelers who enjoy musicals at sea will want to stick to Icon.

Unlike its predecessor, the new ship shows a rendition of Broadway hit "The Wizard of Oz" — Munchkins, a puppet Toto, and a 16-piece live band included.

The layout of Icon's amenities were better than its cousin.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

Some of Wonder of the Seas' enticing outdoor amenities — like the surf simulator, zipline, and mini-golf course — are clustered on the deck above and away from the pools and water slides.

This layout might be difficult for parents with children who bounce from one activity to the next. Wouldn't it be easier to have all of these outdoor extras near each other, or at least on the same deck, for parental supervision purposes?

This is where Icon of the Seas excelled: All its exciting open-air activities were adjacent.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

The rows of pools flowed perfectly into Thrill Island's waterpark , rock climbing walls, mini-golf course, and Crown's Edge.

The best part? The adult-only Hideaway — which flexes an infinity pool club with a DJ — is right behind Thrill Island, creating a clear separation between parents and their children without being too far from each other.

'Free' options like the buffet and build-your-own tacos and burritos bar are available on both ships.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

But you won't find the larger vessel's five-stall food hall or mini-golf-adjacent finger food stand on Wonder.

As expected, Icon of the Seas has more dining options than its predecessor, although there are some overlaps.

odyssey cruises royal caribbean

Wonder of the Seas has 11 bars and 21 dining venues (9 complimentary and 12 upcharged).

Icon of the Seas has eight more bars, four more complimentary restaurants, and three more specialty dining choices.

Nor will you find the new ship’s plush $200-a-person Empire Supper Club on any other cruise liner.

The multi-course dinner, paired with cocktails and live music, stunts the cost of either vessel's other dinner options.

But if you love Johnny Rockets, you’ll be disappointed by Icon of the Seas.

Restaurants like the popular burger chain and Southern comfort-inspired Mason Jar are only on Wonder of the Seas. Fine by me: My fried chicken at Mason Jar was as dry as a desert.

The younger ship doesn't have Wonder's robot bartender-armed bar either. It does, however, have new watering holes with dueling pianos and live jazz.

Surprisingly, Wonder of the Seas has 65 more cabins than its new cousin.

But several of Icon's 28 stateroom categories are a first for the cruise line.

This includes the new family infinite balcony cabin, which has a small bunk bed nook for children.

Royal Caribbean assigned me an ocean-view balcony stateroom on both ships.

My Wonder of the Seas' cabin was 20 square-feet smaller than the one on Icon. But my bathroom on the latter was so tiny, I accidentally elbowed the walls at almost every turn.

Sailing on the world's largest cruise ship doesn't mean you'll have the world's largest cabin after all.

Wonder and Icon are both operating seven-night roundtrip itineraries from Florida to the Caribbean.

In 2024, Wonder of the Seas is scheduled for year-round sailings from Port Canaveral to the Caribbean and Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , starting at $700 per person.

Icon of the Seas is spending its first year in service operating nearly identical itineraries but from Miami instead. The cheapest 2024 option is $1,786 per person.

That's a difference of more than $125 per person per day.

"Bookings and pricing for Icon of the Seas can only be described as 'iconic,'" Naftali Holtz, the CFO of Royal Caribbean Group, told analysts in February.

Icon of the Seas’ name speaks for itself.

If your family is looking for a jam-packed kid-friendly cruise with enough amenities to stay entertained for a week, both ships are a great option.

But if you're a seasoned mega-ship-cruiser looking to experience something new, Icon of the Seas is your best bet.

They may be similar, but no other behemoth cruise liner has a waterpark for children and a pool club for adults just dozens of feet from each other.

Father of florida cruise passenger, 20, who jumped off royal caribbean ship after argument believes his son is still alive: report.

The father of the 20-year-old passenger who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last Thursday in a reportedly drunken, impulsive leap believes his son is still alive nearly a week later.

Francel Parker, dad of missing Levion Parker, told the Daily Sun that he believes his child — whom he called a master diver — is still alive in the waters off the Bahamas.

“As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him. I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard. I stand on the word of God. I believe he is alive,” Francel Parker said to the local Florida paper Wednesday.

Levion Parker was ID'd as the 20 year old who jumped to his death from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

The US Coast Guard called off its search for the North Port man a day earlier.

The younger Parker allegedly jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas around 4 a.m. in front of his helpless dad and younger brother after getting into an argument with his father, witnesses previously told The Post.

But Francel, who runs an AC business in Port Charlotte, told the local newspaper that he wasn’t arguing with Levion and that his son wasn’t trying to take his own life.

He said Levion is a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat, and he is demanding to know how his underage son was given alcohol on the four-day cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island.

“We don’t drink,” Francel said. “I’d like to know how my son was served so much alcohol.”

Levion Parker is shown pictured with his family.

Another passenger onboard the cruise who witnessed Levion’s heart-stopping jump said Francel was “fussing at him for being drunk.”

Bryan Sims told The Post that he was hanging out with Levion and his 18-year-old brother, Seth, in the hotel tub of the ship in the early hours of April 4 before they went their separate ways.

After Sims had used the restroom and dried off, he bumped into the brothers and their father near the elevators.

Levion Parker's dad claims his son is still alive, adding that he's a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess,” Sims said of the moment before Parker jumped.

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all,” Sims said, calling what he witnessed “surreal.”

Another cruise guest described the frantic chaos that followed.

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” Deborah Morrison told The Post.

A witness claimed to have saw the father become growingly upset about Levion being too drunk while on the cruise.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

Francel told the Daily Sun that he threw six life rings off the ship in hopes of saving his son before the massive vessel was able to come to a stop about 20 minutes later.

Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for the 20-year-old and alerted the Coast Guard, which later took over the search.

Royal Caribbean said it called for search boats to look for Levion Parker alerted the Coast Guard.

At least 406 people on major cruise lines and ferries have gone overboard between 2000 and 2024, according to data collected by retired professor and cruise industry researcher Ross Klein.

Death rates among overboard passengers and crew members vary significantly among cruise lines, but even the safest cruise companies were only able to rescue about 40% of people who fall or jump off the ship, Klein told the Washington Post in July.
