School trip to Ordsall Hall

Ordsall Hall has had a long and interesting history with many different uses since it was first mentioned in records in 1177! Today, it is a welcoming and friendly historic house telling the story of the Hall and some of the people who made it their home.

There is so much to do and discover! Dress up as a Tudor, try on some chain mail, discover some of the foods that would have been cooked at the Hall in the 1500s, pretend you are having a feast around the table in our Great Hall, find out about the Pre-Raphaelite artist who lived here, listen to the story of the 450 year old Radclyffe bed, chat to our friendly staff and volunteers, visit our allotment and herb garden, explore the sculptures in the gardens and much, much more.

We have lots of events going on throughout the year for all ages – from quizzes in the school holidays to Shakespeare in the gardens, regular guided tours, concerts, workshops and talks.

Pick up a souvenir of your visit in our shop and treat yourself to some well deserved cake and coffee after you have toured the Hall.

The Hall is FREE to visit and is open to the public throughout the year.

The Hall represents the continual evolution and use of an almost unique building from the fourteenth century to the modern day and is one of the finest records of construction techniques and materials of its kind in the North West of England.

Ordsall Hall is one of only eight comparable, Grade 1 listed, timber-framed, large houses in Lancashire and one of only three which retains significant fourteenth century fabric.

KS1 and KS2 school visits

Their schools learning programme offers a wide range of stimulating and memorable facilitated sessions at their two stunning venues, all designed to inspire and engage young minds.

Get hands-on with real museum objects in their curriculum-linked learning sessions, or explore their collections with downloadable resources – there’s so much on offer for schools visiting Ordsall Hall and Salford Museum & Art Gallery.

Find out what’s on offer and how to get the most out of your visit for your group, or contact them for further information.

Please note that all group visits, including self-guided, must be booked in advance.

The Hall contains a number of nationally significant rooms and architectural features including:

  • The East Wing – some of which dates back to the 1360s. This also contains rare, surviving examples of medieval domestic apartments which makes it especially significant
  • The Great Hall   – one of the largest, open, timber framed halls in the North West
  • Quatrefoils (four leaf repeating pattern found on the Tudor interior and exterior of the Hall) – these are more usually associated with halls in the South East of England. Ordsall Hall appears to have set a fashion in the North for the quatrefoil pattern when it had it emblazoned on the interior and exterior of its Great Hall in 1512
  • Six, medieval pieces of armorial stained glass
  • The Italian Plaster Ceiling Room   – as its name suggest, the main feature of this room is a rare plaster ceiling of Italianate ‘lozenge’ design. Never before seen by the public, the ceiling has been carefully restored to its original 1500s appearance
  • Restored medieval paintwork depicting pomegranates and oak leaves on the roof brace in the   Great Chamber. Pomegranates were an early symbol of unity and fertility, with oak laves being used to represent strength of faith

Photos of Ordsall Hall

What will students see and do.

Ordsall Hall was built in Salford in 1177 and is the oldest building in Manchester. It is well-known for housing the notorious Radclyffe family for many decades. The walls of Ordsall Hall have witnessed many milestones for this family, including marriage, feuds, deaths, and even Sir Alexander Radclyffe’s promotion to the high sheriff.

The venue offers a Tudor themed session called ‘Ordsall Alive!’ for Key Stages 1 and 2. The KS1 session is a half day and pupils will find out what life was like for the Radclyffe family and their servants during Tudor times. Pupils will explore the kitchen, bedrooms and Great Hall and have the chance to play with some Tudor toys.

The KS2 session is a full day. Pupils will help to prepare a wedding feast. As the Radclyffe family and their servants prepare for the celebration, pupils will help them and will get an insight into what Tudor homes were like. There will be hard work to do in the kitchen, Great Chamber and Star Chamber, as well as a dance to learn in the Great Hall.

Pupils will learn about Tudor celebrations, food and homes as well as discovering how different life was for rich and poor during this period.

Ordsall Hall is packed with many learning opportunities and adventures. This is a great place for your class to learn about history and make memories that will last forever.

How does the trip link to the curriculum?

Pupils in KS1 will develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time. They’ll use a wide vocabulary of everyday historical terms and will ask and answer questions.

Pupils will learn about significant historical events and people and places in their own locality.

Pupils in KS2 will note connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms. Pupils will study an aspect of history or a site dating from a period beyond 1066 that is significant in the locality.

About Ordsall Hall

Ordsall Hall is a Tudor manor house in Salford that was the seat of the Radclyffe family for over 300 years. With sections of the house dating as early as the 1360s, it is a hidden gem amongst the busy city streets, and allows guests to experience the every-day lives of its past Tudor occupants.

Ordsall Hall history

The Hall first appeared in written records in 1177 as ‘Ordeshala’, and by 1251 was likely a house when William de Ferrers exchanged it for land in Pendleton with David de Hulton.   In around 1355, the manor passed to the Radclyffe family, beginning 20 years of bitter ownership feuds before in 1374 Sir John Radclyffe at last secured it. Over the next 300 years of Radclyffe occupancy the Hall was expanded significantly, and generations of their colourful family walked its Halls.

During Elizabeth I ’s reign, striking twins Alexander and Margaret Radclyffe were a sensation at court. Alexander was High Sheriff of Lancashire and Margaret soon became Elizabeth’s favourite lady-in-waiting, once dazzling the entire court in a white satin gown gifted by her brother. When in 1599 Alexander was killed on military exploits in Ireland, Margaret fell into a deep sorrow and 3 months later reportedly died of a broken heart.

As with many, the English Civil War brought financial trouble to the family through their Royalist allegiance, and by 1662 Radclyffe son and heir John was forced to sell his beloved ancestral home to Colonel John Birch. The Hall then passed through several different hands, including pre-Raphaelite painter Frederic Shields, and has been used as a clergy school, working men’s club and radio station throughout its lifetime.

Ordsall Hall today

Today the Hall is managed by Salford City Council. It is free to visit and provides guests with a wealth of fascinating history and stunning architecture.

In the Frederic Shields Gallery, the lives of the Hall’s past occupants may be explored, from the bittersweet story of the Radclyffe twins to the pre-Raphaelite painter himself. Temporary exhibitions also run each year, so keep an eye out for what may be on when you choose to go! Explore the Great Hall, Star Chamber and Hall’s kitchen all dating back between 400 to 800 years ago, complete with real Tudor furniture, interactive exhibits and fascinating architecture.

The Hall’s gardens also provide visitors with a variety of historical plants and design features to explore, from a late-Tudor knot garden to a World War One allotment. The herb garden also brings medieval, Tudor and modern herbs together in one place, while historically revered fruit and flowers adorn the pathways.

Getting to Ordsall Hall

Ordsall Hall is situated in Ordsall, Salford, south west of Manchester City Centre. There is an onsite car park 100 metres from the Hall’s entrance, with 5 parking bays for blue badge holders available.

It is a 40-minute walk from Piccadilly Station, or you can take the tram to Exchange Quay from which the Hall is a 13-minute walk. Alternatively the 33 bus from Chinatown stops on Oldfield Road, a 15-minute walk away.

I read about this place but genuinely didn't believe such a property could have survived so close to the centre of Manchester and the Media City / Quays development. But as we rounded the corner and saw it, we were dumbstruck - it looks so completely out of place! Admission to the hall is free and you can explore the building to your heart's content. They have a small cafe on site too. The downstairs is dominated by the great hall and the kitchen area, whereas upstairs there are exhibits on the history of the building and how children were dressed in Tudor times. In the attic space you can see some of the original wattle and daub construction, which is incredible to think it's survived so long. All the staff on site were incredibly helpful and friendly. The only reason why I've given this 3/5 is that much of the exhibits and the way the place is presented are aimed at children - we attended as two adults and enjoyed it, but there's much more to do if you're with children. Given it's less than 5 minutes' walk from the Exchange Quay Metrolink stop, plus the fact that admission is free, there's really no excuse for not popping by and taking a look.

Driving past Ordsall Hall most days (as I live very close to it), I have always enjoyed it as a place of beauty and the fascination of its random location. The location is of course the modern development surrounding the site so it looks out of place to have a beautiful old manor right next to modern apartment buildings and industrial units. Perhaps this is what makes it more unique to other similar historic houses? Needless to say, over the last couple of years I have been intrigued as to what on earth they were doing when the whole building was covered in scaffolding and sheeting - like something from a sci fi film but of course logic suggested it was restoration of some sort. Once it re opened recently I was amazed at the job they had done. They had added/rebuilt parts of it, however it has been done with integrity and fits the building perfectly. The grounds and gardens have all been spruced up with beautiful wood bridges and other work. Even the pavement from the car park to the site is beautiful and is the strangest material which I just had to get on my knees to run my hand across its glossy surface. All around the building the stone work and gardens look great so I headed on in for my first look around. It has a great many rooms and seems to be bigger inside than it appears outside. They had members of staff in each room to offer information on what you are looking at, and we got some great photos of my mum in an old style bath (clothed I am glad to say!) and myself sat in the banqueting hall at the head of the table. Once I had sat some staff came over and brought me a velvet robe and crown to look the part to which my old man got his camera out and started snapping. This made a great Facebook profile picture for all my many peasants to admire! They told me that they also have a free hog roast in a couple of week's time when I visited, with entertainments and beverages etc. I would have loved to have gone but sadly I could not make it, however I will definitely go to any other events they hold. Car parking was £2 which of course goes towards the upkeep of the house so I have no qualms about paying to keep a place of history alive in such a modern location. All in all it was a nice visit to have after a large lunch with my parents - and looking around a place like this with the folks made a 34 year old guy feel like a kid again, which is never a bad thing for a sum of £2

I am so glad that Ordsall Hall has been saved. It is set in its original grounds in good original condition. The staff at the hall take part in recreating life as it was in Elizabethan times. The hall is set out in the orginal way with a big fireplace in the main hall. In the afternoons there are various events for children and adults alike, playing games of the day. For bonfire night, the hall organises a light procession to the hall followed by fireworks and a bonfire. The hall is defintely worth a vist for all the family to get a real taste of history and what life would have been like.

Ordsall Hall has many activities and things to see and do whilst you're there. Ordsall Hall doe a lot for their visitors, including the award winning activities for children on school trips. In the morning they does a tour of the building, and in the afternoon they do activities including brass rubbing, archery, costume wearing and much more. They have fun days and exhibitions and events all through the year. They also do a great firework display on bonfire night. Ordsall Hall also has a cheap souvenir store, where the price is respectable so children can buy things with their pocket money. Refreshments are available and an eating area. The opening times are: Monday-Friday 10am-4pm. rebuild a replica of the original moat that once guarded the Hall;

Junior ‘Time Trip’ to Ordsall Hall

ordsall hall school trips

On Tuesday 22 nd November and Wednesday 23 rd November each Lower II class travelled back in time to Tudor times on the annual trip to Ordsall Hall.

js-ordsall-hall15

The girls were greeted a rich Tudor lady and her maid. The two women took each class on an adventure through the old rooms of the Hall and we even spent some time in the garden!

3a-ordsall-hall1

The girls were fascinated and learned how to set the table for a Tudor feast, how the rich Tudors slept, took part in completing the duties of a maid and found out about crime and punishment in Tudor times! The day ended with each pupil getting to wear Tudor clothing and learning a dance to scare away the rats!

As always, this trip was enjoyed by all the girls and teachers. We all learned something new and will enjoy finding out more about the Tudors in the coming months!

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

ordsall hall school trips

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!
