Bangui Windmills and Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Pagudpud is a northern coastal town located in the Ilocos Norte region of the Philippines. It is located 77 KM north of Laoag City in Ilocos Norte . It's a must-visit destination in Northern Luzon and is usually part of the Ilocos itinerary as a side trip when in Laoag. It is often referred to as the “ Boracay of the North” mainly because of its stunning white Pagudpud Ilocos beaches, which is what Pagudpud is known for.

One of the beautiful small towns in the Philippines , Pagudpud is not packed with fancy shops, bars, and clubs. However, it offers visitors wonderful natural attractions like coves, caves, and rock formations and is an emerging top tourist destination in the Philippines  and a must-visit Luzon tourist spot . You may not party the night away in Pagudpud like Boracay, but you can enjoy the outdoors and the beauty of nature.

Paraiso ni Anton (Anton’s Paradise) is one of the most mysterious places in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte tour packages . The site consists of a small waterfall with a Virgin Mary grotto (small shrine) beside it. Tall trees and thick vegetation stand as the background to the shrine. The white stairs leading up to the grotto provide easy access to visitors.

According to local stories, the site is named after a faith healer named Anton. This healer used to go to the site and use the water from the stream to heal people’s illnesses.

No one knows where Anton is or if he ever existed. However, most locals still believe in the healing power of the spring water. They also have high respect for the sanctity of the shrine.

Because of its religious nature and mysterious history, Paraiso ni Anton has become a popular attraction in Pagudpud.

After visiting the grotto, you can buy drinks and snacks from the stores in front of the parking area.

Paraiso ni Anton is about 2.1 kilometers from the Patapat Viaduct. The access point to the side is just beside the Pan-Philippine Highway.

Agua Grande is a distinct natural attraction where freshwater meets saltwater. The site is more like a mini-park that features a small waterfall, a river, and an Ilocos Norte beach. Tall coconut trees and green hills serve as both shade and background to this park.

Every day, clean freshwater flows into the Agua Grande from the Mogabog Falls. The stream then falls into rock pools and then eventually goes all the way out to the sea. Like many visitors, you may find it enjoyable to dip into the refreshing rock pool while appreciating the view of the Ilocos beach and sea.

Agua Grande charges an entrance fee. This park is approximately 1 kilometer from Patapat Viaduct and 700 meters from Paraiso ni Anton. You can access Agua Grande via the Pan-Philippine Highway.

10. Timmangtang Rock

Timmangtang Rock is a distinct large rock formation along Pagudpud’s shoreline. The rock overlooks the sea and looks like a large green bell from afar.

Local communities consider Timmangtang Rock the male half of the “Lovers Rocks”. The female half is the Bantay Abot Cave. The two rocks have similarities and are just a few meters apart. This is why locals believe that they were one structure hundreds of years ago.

Taking photos and selfies of the Timmangtang Rock is a favorite tourist activity. You can also climb to the top and get fantastic views of the nearby Aggao village and the West Philippine Sea. Bonfires are also a common sight around Timmangtang Rock during evenings.

Timmangtang Rock is situated close to Barangay Balaoi and is accessible via the Pan-Philippine Highway. It is only about 4.1 kilometers from Patapat Viaduct and just 2 kilometers from Kabigan Falls. Because of its proximity to other prominent Pagudpud Ilocos Norte tourist spots, Timmangtang Rock is often part of the typical Pagudpud day tour and some Ilocos tours .

Kabigan Falls in Ilocos Norte

The beautiful Kabigan Falls stands at around 87 feet and is tucked within the enchanting forested area of Pagudpud.

At the site’s main entrance, you need to do the 30-minute trek to reach the falls. This attraction is managed by a local group that collects a preservation and guide fee from visitors. They assign a trained guide to accompany visitors through the trek.

The path to Kabigan Falls is relatively easy to follow at its mostly flat terrain. The trek itself is a memorable travel experience. Along the way, you will encounter streams and get amazing views of surrounding hills and rice fields.

Once you reach the falls, you can swim, set up a picnic, and enjoy the lush scenery. The water from the falls is usually cold but refreshing. Some of the things to bring to this visit are extra clothes, towels, drinks, and snacks. All visitors must keep the area clean before they leave.

Kabigan Falls is located in Barangay Balaoi. Its main entrance is just along the Pan-Philippine Highway. The falls are about 4.6 kilometers from the Patapat Viaduct and 2.8 kilometers from Bantay Abot Cave.

Dos Hermanos are two rocky islands off the coast of Pagudpud. These islands are considered natural wonders because of their proximity to each other and how remarkably identical they are.

Dos Hermanos is Spanish for “two brothers”. The islands were named after a local legend involving two brothers. According to the legend, the two brothers got lost at sea. But their love for each other was so strong that they became twin rocks that will always be together for eternity.

Both twin islands are small and rocky. The waters around them are covered with edible seaweed, locally called “gamet”. Visitors swim to the island at high tide to take photos, admire the ocean view, or wait for the sunset.

At low tide, you can reach the island by walking through a sandbar. Take note that this sandbar only appears during low tide. The access point to Dos Hermanos Islands is Maira-ira Point or Blue Lagoon Pagudpud.

Blue Lagoon Beach in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Blue Lagoon Beach is not exactly a lagoon but a widely known Pagudpud beach in Ilocos Norte. Its original name is Maira-Ira, but many people refer to it as Blue Lagoon Pagudpud because of its crystal blue water.

Compared to Saud Beach, the Blue Lagoon Pagudpud area is more developed and has more tourist activities and facilities. Restaurants, huts, homestays, and resorts line the edge of the beach. Activities like surfing, banana boat riding, and ziplining are also available. Hannah’s Beach Resort is the biggest and most famous resort in the area. Although Hannah’s occupies 7 hectares of land alongside Blue Lagoon, the actual beach is still for public use.

From November to June, Blue Lagoon Pagudpud Ilocos Norte experiences large waves and strong currents. This period is perfect for surfing, but it’s dangerous for swimming. Outside of these months, the sea is calm, and is, therefore, safer to swim in.

Blue Lagoon Beach is situated in Sitio Malingay, Barangay Balaoi. It is about 2.5 kilometers from the main highway and 12 kilometers from the main town of Pagudpud. The road leading to the Pagudpud beach area slopes downwards. You can get nice panoramic shots of Blue Lagoon from the top of this road.

A hammock by Saud Beach in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Saud Beach Pagudpud Ilocos Norte is considered to be the most beloved and admired Pagudpud beach. It's also one of the best beaches in the Philippines . A travel magazine even listed it as one of the “25 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World."

Despite being well-known, Saud Beach is not highly commercialized and is often not crowded. Instead of shops, tall coconut trees border the beach and offer shade to beachgoers. Saud has impressive crystal clear water and powdery white sand. Although there are nearby resorts, the beach vibe is peaceful and laidback.

  • Read our article on other white sand beaches in the Philippines

Saud is wide and long enough that you can easily find a quiet spot to relax or sunbathe. It is an ideal spot for swimming even for little kids as it’s normally shallow and has gentle waves.

You can find Saud Beach beach in Barangay Burayoc, on the eastern side of Pagudpud. It is about 3.8 kilometers from the Pan-Philippine Highway.

Bantay Abot Cave in Ilocos Norte

Despite being called Bantay Abot Cave, this natural structure is technically not a cave but an arched rock formation. The name Bantay Abot means “ a mountain with a hole”. From a distance, it resembles a half donut. As mentioned, locals refer to Bantay Abot as the female half of the Lover’s Rock.

Because of its unique shape, Bantay Abot has become a favorite stop for many Pagudpud tours. Another amazing thing about this rock formation is its location. Bantay Abot faces the West Philippine Sea and is partly surrounded by water. This site is quite photogenic so many visitors have fun snapping photos and enjoying the scenery. Unfortunately, due to strong currents, swimming is not allowed in the area.

Bantay Abot Cave is located in Barangay Balaoi. It is only 2.8 kilometers from Kabigan Falls and 4.9 kilometers from Patapat Viaduct. You can visit Bantay Abot at any time during the day. There is no admission fee to access the site.

Patapat Viaduct in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

This bridge is classified as a viaduct due to its elevation, more than 30 meters above sea level. It is the fourth-longest bridge in the Philippines. Patapat functions as the continuation of the Maharlika Highway and links the rest of the Ilocos Region to the Cagayan Valley.

Patapat is a very scenic bridge. It wraps around the foot of the Northern Cordillera Mountain Ranges and runs along Pagudpud’s stunning coast. Its structure and location offer anyone who crosses it, stunning views of the West Philippine Sea, the Pasaleng Bay, and surrounding lush landscapes. This is the reason why the bridge has become one of the most popular landmarks in Pagudpud.

Patapat Viaduct is also the access point for other regional attractions like the Kalbario Natural Park and Mabugabog Falls. To experience Patapat Viaduct, you can walk through the bridge or ride a tricycle (local transport) to cross it.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse is one of the few man-made structures on this Pagupud’s attractions list, but it deserves its spot!

If you want to capture a little of Pagudpud’s history, Cape Bojeador Lighthouse offers this and more. Also called Burgos Lighthouse, this structure stands at the northwestern point of Luzon Island. It was first lit in 1898. For more than 100 years, it has guided ships to the shores of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.

Today, Cape Bojeador Lighthouse’s architecture is still intact and serves as a strong reminder of the Spanish colonial period. In 2004, this lighthouse was named a National Historic Landmark, and a year after, it was recognized as a National Cultural Treasure by the Philippine Government.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse can be found in Vigia de Nagparitan, Burgos. There is a 20-peso entrance fee to the lighthouse. To make your visit more worthwhile, you may want to climb up to the top of the lighthouse. The climb is long and steep but the top is an amazing vantage point that offers breathtaking views of Vigia de Nagpartian Hill, Cape Bojeador, and the blue sea.

Sunrise at the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Kapurpurawan Rock is one of the outstanding rock formations you can find in the Pagudpud area and one of the must-see geographical features of the Philippines . Located in Burgos, Kapurpurawan stands out for its white color, size, and unique structure. Its name is derived from the Ilocano word “puraw”, which means “white”.

This natural sculpture was thousands of years in the making. It is a result of sea waves and wind constantly striking the rocks around the coast. No man can replicate the beauty of Kapurpurawan so it has become one of the most notable Pagudpud tourist spots.

Kapurpurawan Rock is picturesque, standing just at the edge of the coast with the blue sea serving as its background. Visitors come here to admire the rock and take photos. Another common tourist activity is to go for a horseback tour around the area. There is no entrance fee to Kapurpurawan but you will need to pay the environmental fee. To preserve the rock, the local government prohibits vandalism and climbing on top of it.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is around 9 kilometers away from Cape Bojeador Lighthouse (Burgos Lighthouse). It is situated on the same coastline as the Bangui Windmills. To reach the site, you just need to turn from the Pan-Philippine Highway to the 3-kilometer dirt road aptly called Kapurpurawan Rock Formation Access Road. You can trek this road or ride a horse or tricycle to reach Kapurpurawan.

Bangui Windmills in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

The amazing Pagudpud windmills that travelers are raving about are officially called Bangui Windmills. It is one of the most picturesque tourist spots in the Philippines . You don’t need to pay an entrance fee to access the site. You only need to bring your trusty camera to capture its beauty. Tourists, who have spare time, often walk to each turbine. There are also local operators in the area that offer horseback rides around the turbines.

15 Best Things to Do in Pagudpud (the Philippines)

Travel back in time to a more peaceful period where nature is king and locals are simply happy spending their days catching fish and chatting with their families. The rural, quiet farm town that is Pagudpud is a gem unlike any other destination in the Philippines. Located in Ilocos Norte, on the northern tip of Luzon, this thought-provoking town encourages you to slow down and live life moment by moment.

The scenery is breathtaking with green hills, rice paddies, and grassy plains everywhere you look. Blue lagoons full of fishermen catching the day’s meal alongside white sand and pebble beaches without the disturbance of nightlife parties- this truly feels like a hidden escape.

Your journey to this unspoiled oasis will include a 12-hour bus ride from Manilla, so it’s a great option to take the over-night bus. Not only will you save yourself the cost of accommodation for the night but also, you’ll arrive in the morning just in time to start exploring!

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Pagudpud :

Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

For some reason, all of the beaches in Pagudpud are simply referred to as “Pagudpud Beach”. If you know which area you’re looking for, however, someone will surely point you in the right direction.

There is the official “PagudPud Beach” which is a small local beach whose visitors are usually fishermen. It’s a peaceful visit with some interesting people watching, but don’t come here expecting postcard views.

Saud Beach is quite beautiful with white sand, turquoise water, and coconut trees stretching out towards the water. Half of the beach is private for resorts and the other half is municipal so expect to pay 20 pesos for beauty-preserving maintenance.

Maira-ira Beach might be the most beautiful as it encompasses a blue lagoon that seems to glow! Perfect for swimming and splashing about!

2. Secret Green Hills

Green Hills

Bottle your water, pack some snacks, get you camera ready, and tie your sneakers tight. You’re about to go on a scenic hour-long walk through farmlands, along rice paddies, and off the beaten path towards the Secret Green Hills.

Walk up the steep grassy hill via a well-trodden path to claim Scottish-style cliff views of crashing waves on rocks and the shore. Explore even further and you’ll come to savanna-like plains where you can view the Caparispisan Wind Farm- a surprising find in this neck of the woods.

3. Kabigan Falls

pagudpud tourist spot

In the eastern part of Barangay Balaoi, you’ll find the mesmerizing Kabigan Falls. Surrounded by lush jungle, this 80 foot tall waterfall is a pure representation of raw nature in its most beautiful form.

The pool below is perfect for swimming and is regarded to be quite a romantic spot. You are fully surrounded by fern-gully style nature that is reminiscent of a utopian sci-fy film. It’s hard not to feel totally and completely alive and in the moment with the rushing water falling next to you.

To get there, take a tricycle until you reach the beaten path where you’ll take a lazy, flip-flop friendly hike to paradise over wooden bridges and under hanging branches through the jungle.

4. Patapat Viaduct

pagudpud tourist spot

Rent a motorbike and go for a ride along the coast on the 4th longest bridge in the country. Stretching a windy 1.3 kilometers, this well-maintained highway rolls around the rocky coast on a cliff dropping off to the water below. Any leisurely ride here offers spectacular views and a laidback cruise.

The highway is wide and not very crowded so it’s suitable even for new riders.

Stop and take some photos or just stare into the beautiful distance. Afterwards, use your bike wisely and have an adventure!

5. Bagong Lipunan Lodge Ruins

Bagong Lipunan Lodge Ruins

Abandoned buildings will always be fascinating. This dilapidating structure was once a lodge for tourists but has since been left to rot. There are no locks or doors to keep visitors out; in fact, the Bagong Lipunan Lodge Ruins have become a local spot for teenagers to sneak in and goof off.

It feels rather ghostly as you explore inside and gets your adrenaline pumping as you turn every corner expecting a scare. If you’re brave enough…visit at night.

Nearby you’ll find fresh spring water running off the cliff in the form of tiny waterfalls where locals say it’s safe to drink.

6. Bantay Abot Cave

pagudpud tourist spot

Fan of the Goonies? Then you’ll find this beachfront cave to be quite euphoric. What looks to be just a plain old giant mossy boulder actually hides a tiny little secret.

Down a small embankment and carefully over some slippery rocks, you’ll make your way along the coast like until you come to Bantay Abot Cave.

While it’s more of a hole than a cave, the way the light shines through Bantay Abot Cave is truly breathtaking. With rays of light shinning through, this spot looks like a gateway to heaven. Needless to say, this spot is ideal for a photo opp.

Around the cave are some areas of rock where you can climb and be a monkey while looking out at the ocean water.

7. Hannah’s Zipline

pagudpud tourist spot

Get an aerial view of the Blue Lagoon by soaring across it on a 1.2-kilometer zipline. Strapped in, lying on your belly like Super Man, you’ll be hurled across the sea with nothing but blue below you. You’ll wind up on the other side of the beach safe, sound, and on the ground.

You can find this professionally run extreme adventure station at Hannah’s Resort and Convention Center on the very right side of the beach (when you’re facing the water).

You have the option of buying souvenir photos but most tourists perfect to bring their own camera or Go-Pro as the staff camera is a bit blasé.

8. La Cocina de Consuelo at Casa Consuelo

pagudpud tourist spot

Go for the food and stay for the beach. La Cocina de Consuelo at Casa Consuelo has a lot to offer in terms of taste and hospitality.

Not only will you find some of the freshest seafood around that has been plucked straight from the sea, but you will also get this seafood at lower prices than more touristy areas on the island. Try the grilled lobster in garlic butter, or go crazy with the full seafood platter.

Afterwards, take a stroll on the private beach which boasts an interesting landscape of flat sand with sporadic trees and mini-rock islands scattered about.

9. Dos Hermanos Islands

pagudpud tourist spot

Along the western coast of Pagudpud in Barangay Balaoi, lie the islet rocks due fondly named Dos Hermanos Islands or “two brothers” islands in English. The folklore goes that there were two brother fishermen who were swept up in the waves and have since taken on new lives as rocks in the sea.

When the tide goes out, you can see underwater caves below the rocks which are home to a community of colorful fish and vegetation. Dos Hermanos Islands are also the source of a local treat of sweet gourmet seaweed.

10. Water Sports at King Fisher’s Resort

pagudpud tourist spot

Home of extreme water sports, King Fisher’s Resort offers kite surfing and paddle boarding with a scenic backdrop. During the day, you have an awesome view of the wind farm and at night, the sunsets right in front of the resort coloring the sky with a bright orange glow. 11. Kayaking on Bulu River

Bulu River

Are you brave enough to tackle the rapids of Bulu River? This 20 -kilometer stretch of crystal clear water rolls around rocks and flows down sharp inclines making for an intense day of adrenaline-pumping action. Bulu River is popular with professional kayakers or kayakers that travel the world looking for the next fix.

There is an area near the road selling Pagudpud memorabilia such as mini wind turbines and Pagudpud key chains, as well as fruit and beverages. Cars will drive by and honk as if to say a quick hello and pay tribute the charmed area.

13. Agua-Grande River

Another environmentally friendly area in Pagudpud is the Agua-Grande River which serves as a mini-hydro electric power plant that is also non-carbon producing. The Agua-Grande River creates and collects enough electricity to power up to 17,000 homes in Pagudpud and the surrounding areas.

In addition to being a totally progressive initiative, the Agua-Grande River is very beautiful. The waterfall flows over mossy rocks while falling to the sea below. You get a great view and there is a small spring-fed pool in which to swim.

You will also have the opportunity to try one of the Philippines most popular dessert dishes, Halo Halo.

pagudpud tourist spot

Did you know that the Philippines actually grows and harvests coffee? You can get fresh beans and bold roasts just about anywhere in this country, including on Pagudpud.

Check out Tartaruga’s Hotel where passionately trained baristas use local beans to create amazing lattes, cappuccinos and espressos. You’ll find quite an array of Filipino brews that might surprise you. The hotel and café might not look like the most fancy establishment out there, but if you are feigning for a caffeine fix, this is the place to get it!

15. Stay in a Homestay

pagudpud tourist spot

To really connect with the Pagudpud culture and it’s people, consider staying in a homestay with a local family who will feed you, interact with you, and possibly show you around the area.

There are many homestays to choose from, some more experienced than others. They are less expensive than hotels and the money goes directly towards the livelihood of the family. You will have your own room but amenities will differ.

You can do some research online or ask around when you arrive for homestay recommendations.

Pagudpud Ilocos Norte Travel Guide

Pagudpud ilocos norte – travel guide.

Pagudpud is a sleepy beach town at the tip of the Ilocos Norte  region of the Philippines. No need to call it the Boracay of the North – Pagudpud is a tropical gem all on its own. Really fine creamy beaches, spectacular waterfalls, panoramic scenes and beautiful coastal drives give you a feeling of new discoveries and trails.

You won’t find the glittering party nightlife here. Pagudpud is laid-back. Best time to visit is anytime between November to April. That covers summer in the Philippines and its drier cold season, outside of the wet rainy months.

The two main beaches are the Blue Lagoon (also called Maira-ira Beach ), located on the eastern side of Pagudpud, and the other one is the arguably more popular Saud Beach which is on the western side. If you’ve got several days, spend half at the Blue Lagoon and the remaining half at Saud Beach. Read on for the rest of our Pagudpud Travel Guide and plan your Pagudpud vacation and itinerary.

The road to Pagudpud

Getting to Pagudpud from Manila by Airplane

If you want to cut your travel time, then hop on a plane in Manila (or Clark) bound for Laoag City. Flight time is approximately an hour.

From Laoag, there are local jeepneys serving the Laoag- Pagudpud route or you can take the buses bound to Cagayan that will pass through Pagudpud.

These airlines have daily flights from Manila to Laoag:

Cebu Pacific Philippine Airlines

Touring & Exploring – Sights to See and Things to Do in Pagudpud

Plan your Pagudpud adventure tour itinerary around these attractions and activities. You can ask your beach resort or hotel to give you directions, refer you to a tour guide, or put together a tour package for you.

  • Explore the length of Saud Beach
  • Explore the length of the Blue Lagoon (Maira-ira Beach)
  • Rent gear at Kingfisher Resort and go kite-surfing at Caparispisan Beach
  • Kayak along the Bolo River
  • Hike to Nacatnagan Cliff
  • Visit Caunayan Landing Site and Memorial
  • Surf near the Dos Hermanos Islands
  • Rent an all terrain vehicle from Hannah’s and explore the backroads in the blue lagoon area
  • Try out Hannah’s Beach Resort’s zipling which is 1.2 kilometers long

The Patapat Viaduct, Pagudpud

Take Pagudpud’s Northern Tricycle Tour and visit the following attractions:

  • Trek to Kabigan Falls
  • Walk along the Patapat Viaduct
  • Walk through the hole of Bantay Abot Cave
  • Skip and hop your way over the reefs to the Dos Hermanos Islands
  • Have a picnic at Agua Grande River Park
  • Stare at Paraiso ni Anton and wonder why it’s a tourist attraction
  • Hop on Timmangtang Rock

Take Pagudpud’s Southern Tricycle Tour and visit the following attractions:

  • Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in the town of Burgos
  • Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in the town of Burgos
  • Kaangrian Falls in the town of Burgos
  • Bangui Windmills in the town of Bangui

The Northern and Southern Pagudpud tours,  regulated by the Department of Tourism, are carried out by tricycle drivers using their tricycles as conveyance. They are trained and accredited by Department of Tourism in guiding visitors through the tour attractions. The tricycle drivers carry laminated brochures of the places to visit for the Northern and Southern tours. Some of these places charge a minimal fee outside of the original tour fee.

The rates are 750 pesos (USD 16.00) per tricycle for each tour, with a maximum of 3 persons, since that’s the maximum passenger capacity of a tricycle.

However, the tricycle drivers of Burgos and Bangui, are in talks with the tricycle drivers of Pagudpud for a more equitable sharing scheme of the organized tour operations, since they argue that the popular stops on the tour itinerary are actually in their municipalities. So – expect a tricycle transfer once you cross Pagudpud’s boundary and an additional amount to pay.

Where to Eat & What to Eat in Pagudpud

Try native Ilocano food such as their version of  longganisa (pork sausage), Ilocos empanada (stuffed pie) , bagnet (deep fried pork),  poqui-poqui (mashed eggplant), igado and dinakdakan . Seafood is abundant and you can have them grilled, fried or stewed (sinigang). Visit the local market in downtown Pagudpud, there are several eateries nearby serving inexpensive local fare or ask a tricyle driver for the best local eatery (carinderia). Pick from a fisherman’s early morning catch and have your resort’s kitchen cook them.

Most resort restaurants in Pagudpud offer standard Ilocano, Filipino and western/continental fare. Also, most resort restaurants are a bit pricey, with prices anywhere from 150 to 350 pesos for an entree. Here are some notable restaurants:

  • Evangeline’s Emohruo Beach Restobar – try their Orange Chicken, Pinakbet and Bagnet with KBL.
  • Kapuluan Vista Resort’s Restaurant – fresh seafood and organic vegetables.
  • Casa Consuelo’s La Cocina de Consuelo – try their Gamet Seaweed Omelet, Poqui-poqui and Bagnet and fresh seafood.
  • BergBlick Restaurant – a German restaurant in Pagudpud. A bit hard to find so ask locals for directions. Try their BergBlick Pan, Sausage Feast and Pinakbet.
  • Mekeni Paluto – located in the Blue Lagoon area, near Hannah’s. These are affordable eateries where you can have fresh seafood cooked any which way.

Pagudpud Beach Resorts & Hotels along the Blue Lagoon (aka Maira-ira beach)

Wholly different from Saud Beach, the Blue Lagoon (aka Maira-ira Beach) is at eastern side of Pagudpud.

Owned by Hannah’s Beach Resort, but designed with a more tropical island feel. Right across the Dos Hermanos Islands. Geared toward the surfing crowd.

  • Indicative Rates (A/C, Twin-Share, Peak Season): Php 3300.00 / USD 73.00

Casa Consuelo

Our favorite place to stay in Pagudpud since it is in a quiet and less populated location. Casa Consuelo is a cozy bed & breakfast right on the beach, also in front of the Dos Hermanos Islands. The rest of the resorts in the Blue Lagoon, Barangay Balaoi area are separated by a road parallel to the beach.

Though the pristine waters are not that “swimmable” because of the reefs – for us this place offers the best view of the ocean. The “swimmable” areas are right in front of Punta Azul, Aqua Seda and Hannah’s.

If you aren’t able to get a room, you can rent a tent and pitch it anywhere on their expansive grassy beachfront lawn. Very good restaurant with reasonable prices on their menu.

Hannah’s Beach Resort

A very large resort. With all its concrete, it has that urban subdivision feel to it, like you never left the city. The place to be if you want to be in the middle of all the action in the Blue Lagoon area. Try out their very long 1.2 kilometer zipline spanning over the waters of the Blue Lagoon. They have various water sports equipment available to rent like banana boats, pedal boats, kayaks and jet skis. The resort caters to the packaged tour crowd and conventioneers.

Pagudpud Beach Resorts & Hotels along Saud Beach

Saud Beach, dubbed the Boracay of the North, is what put Pagudpud on the map. The resorts below marked with asterisks are clustered at Burayoc Point, which is the southern  end of Saud Beach.

Burayoc Point is a rocky outcrop, so they don’t have a sandy beachfront, but it offers a great sunset view with the rocks in the foreground. Standing on Burayoc Point, you’ll see the windmills of Bangui lined up on the horizon.

Saud Beach Resort, which has the best beachfront in our opinion, is just a few steps away from Burayoc Point for those wanting to take a dip. Tartaruga’s is inland, but the beach is just a short walk away via the municipal beach entrance.  Click on the links for current rates.

Saud Beach Resort and Hotel

Probably the largest resort in the area, with the best beachfront. Probably the oldest too, since we first stayed here in the late 1990’s, but it is still well maintained.

Homestays & Guesthouses in Pagudpud

If somehow you’re unable to get a room from any of the resorts above or would like to spend less on accommodations (especially if you plan on being outdoors most of the time) try bunking at homestays.

Local residents free up their guestrooms or their own rooms for visitors at rates significantly lower than resort rates. Often you get home-cooked local cuisine and an immersive experience with the amiable residents of Pagudpud. Some homestays have grown into full-time B&B’s.

Homestays though are generally not beachfront in Saud Beach, but a handful in the Blue Lagoon area are almost beachfront.

Below’s a small sampling of homestays in Pagudpud. If all are full, just ask any local resident for recommendations, especially tricycle drivers, and they’ll point you to a house where you can get a roof over your head.

PAGUDPUD, The Paradise of the North: Itinerary and Travel Guide

Pagudpud Ilocos Norte Itinerary travel guide

Pagudpod known as the “ Boracay of the North” is situated at the northernmost tip of mainland Luzon. It is a 10-hour journey from Manila by bus. It has a pristine coastline which also has a surfing site, picturesque rock formations, nature-based attractions, and the well-known Pagudpud’s Bangui Bay which features 20 wind turbines, making it Southeast Asia’s first windmill farm.

PAGUDPUD Travel Guide:

I’ve always been wanting to visit Pagupud. As a matter of fact, this place is on my bucket list of places I wanted to visit. That is why when the opportunity to go here presents itself, I grab it right away! A big thank you to my friend Joy for tagging me along.

HOW TO GET TO PAGUDPUD

Pagudpud is accessible by land from different areas in Luzon and by air through Laoag airport.

Or you can also join guided tours available online. If you are interested you can book through Klook using the link below.

WHERE TO STAY IN PAGUDPUD

I would recommend staying at a place near Saud Beach or Blue Lagoon. The main mode of transport is by tricycle, although some locals prefer to ride a bike. So upon arriving at the airport or bus terminal, you can hop on to these tricycles going to your accommodation. I would recommend you take the 10-hour overnight bus trip and arrive in Pagudpod early in the morning.

TOP TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN PAGUDPUD

Here are the top tourist spots that you can cover in a day tour or with an itinerary for 2 to 3 days while you are in Pagudpud. If you are doing a DIY tour, please note that the tourist spots are grouped by their location – the NORTHBOUND TOUR and the SOUTHBOUND TOUR. When you arrived at the terminal or airport, you’ll see drivers offering these tours. If you have your own car, you can make this your reference for the places in Pagudpod you are visiting.

The tricycle for the northbound tours is prohibited to go around the tourist spots in the southbound area, and vice versa. Guests will have to transfer to the designated tricycle if going from one tour to another.

The word  ‘kaibigan’ means ‘friend’  in the Filipino language. According to the locals that live near the Kabigan Falls; the waterfall gets its name because the falls and the river water are ‘ magkaibigan ‘ (friends).

Bantay Abot Cave means “A mountain with a hole”. The rock is really not a cave but only an opening formed by two leaning rocks after an earthquake hit the area during the 80s.

CAPE BOJEADOR LIGHTHOUSE

Cape Bojeador lighthouse is a 20-meter octagonal tower designed by Magin Pers in the year 1887. The lighthouse was declared a national historical landmark in 2004 and a cultural treasure in 2005. There’s a very nice view from the top of the lighthouse. It’s funny because I heard about this lighthouse first in a Filipino TV program – Jessica Soho’s Gabi ng Lagim . It has very interesting paranormal horror stories from the caretakers, locals, and even tourists.

Legend has it that the Timmangtang rock is the lover of Bantay Abot Cave. Both are collectively known as the “Lover’s Rock” and are directly opposite a few meters away from each other.

And here’s us doing some crazy shot, that we weren’t able to achieve. ^_^ So, we settled for a jump shot since it is already getting dark.

Pagudpud Tourist Attractions

The coastal town of Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte is famous for its long stretch of pristine beaches minus the crowd and commercialism. Also boasting man-made attractions, it is a beautiful coexistence of nature and architecture.

First SEA Wind Farm

To begin with, this bucolic municipality happens to have the first ever wind farm in Southeast Asia. Located in the neighbouring town of Bangui, the gigantic windmills are truly a majestic sight to behold. Lining up all in a row along a rugged coastline, you can watch these wind turbines from afar or get real close for free.

We had a great time taking photos but it was too windy (of course) and the heat was brutal so best to wear a hat with elastic bands and put on plenty of sunscreen. People there are friendly and you can also dine on some local delicacies like bagnet. There are also souvenir shops where you can buy miniature turbines, key chain, and more.

Stunning Rock Formations

Next, marvel at nature's great architectural masterpieces. The roaring sea currents combined with the strong wind have sculpted limestone walls for years to reveal stunning rock formations.

The best place to see this is at Kapurpurawan in Burgos, south of Pagudpud. We recommend going in the morning as the sun can be merciless and the trek is a bit challenging. However, you do have an option to ride a horse for only PHP100.

Meanwhile, Bantay Abot Cave in Barangay Balaoi do not require long walks but you do need to go down some steep steps. It is not a cave per se since nature has carved a hole into it but the view of the sea is worth the PHP20 entrance fee. Just a few meters away is Timmangtang Rock which had us feeling a bit sentimental since it looked kinda lonely sitting there by the shore.

Burgos Lighthouse

While you're here, do a side trip to Burgos Lighthouse for a little bit of cultural heritage. Built in the late 1800's, it is one of the prettiest lighthouses in the country. There is an entrance fee of PHP20 and you'll need to climb up some steps but the panoramic view from the top is just amazing. If you're feeling lazy, you can hire a tricycle that can carry up to 3 people for only PHP10. The museum is a bit lacklustre but the surrounding seascape alone is worth the stop.

Grab your swimsuits because it's time to hit the beach! Do not miss Saud Beach for its turquoise water and fine creamy sand. Locals call it the Boracay of the North sans the crowd, enterprising individuals, over-development, and nonstop partying. The cleanliness and serenity of the place really allowed us to slow down and enjoy each and every moment. The view of the windmill from here, the sunrise, and the sunset are simply breath-taking. If you're not staying nearby, you can access the public side of the beach for a small entrance fee of PHP20 and perhaps rent a cottage for PHP250.

Just as popular is Maira-ira Beach or the Blue Lagoon, named after the fact that the water stays blue no matter what time of year, even during the rainy season. The beach however is more suitable for surfing due to big waves. The only thing that turned us off a bit is a hotel's half-hearted attempt at a theme park resulting to some garish cartoon statues that seemed out of place.

Patapat Viaduct

Lastly, get off Patapat Viaduct for another postcard perfect scene as the winding bridge embraces the mountain on one side, and offers a breath-taking view of Pasaleng Bay on another. At 1.128 kilometre long, it is the 4th longest bridge in the Philippines and is truly a magnificent feat of engineering.
