Pearl Jam Show Notes 9/5/2023:

Release opens the first show at the United Center since 2009. After Low Light, Ed says they’re “so blessed to be back in Chicago…we have a lot of family and friends in the audience tonight,” joking that the “people in the front row I see more than my family, so I guess you qualify…” He says they hope to “get back outside someday,” referring to Wrigley, which elicits a cheer from the crowd. The band exits and Ed plays Just Breathe solo. Retrograde is the kick-down-the-chairs song tonight, the ending is thunderous, Mike putting on a show early creating a cacophony of sound. Corduroy gets the crowd going with a call-and-response and Ed holding the first note of “Everything has chains…” for a long time. After, he says “we’re gonna start this one together…I’m thinking we might fuck it up…it’s gonna be my fault, I’m telling you right now…at least I got the balls to fuckin’ try it…” leading into Gods’ Dice, the first performance since 2018. After the first line Ed exclaims “…got it!” and they get through it, Jeff with a huge smile on his face the whole song. Quick Escape is introduced as:

“a bit of a science-fiction tale about a species that…there were signs every day that they were destroying their own planet, but they didn’t listen, and next thing you know they’re on another planet…it was a shit fuckin’ planet…no other planet was like the one that they had…it’s just science fiction, that’s all…”

Ed recognizes Jeff as the one who turned them on to the TV show The Bear , which is set in Chicago, and Ed talks about working at restaurants and says:

“…I still wake up with waiter nightmares, 30-plus years later…and then I wake up and I think ‘oh my god, thank god I’m in a band'”

Animal, used twice on the show, follows. Before a beautiful Light Years, a touching moment as Ed talks about a very recent loss in his family, his great-aunt Sandy, saying they were just up north for her services yesterday, and her picture is shown on the screens. Mike has a long behind-the-back section of the Even Flow solo. Chris Chelios makes a cameo on stage after Dance of the Clairvoyants, and Ed gives a shoutout to opening band Inhaler. Josh impresses on In My Tree, helping out on percussion. Ed throws in a quick “Detroit!” after the “pistons” line in Comatose. Ed gets choked up a little before RVM:

“Yesterday we received a very respectful and dignified and heartfelt petition to play a certain song for a certain individual, and I recognized his face, and he meant so much to this community of people who sometimes travel together…and share their friendships and energies, and use us as an excuse to have a good life and see the world…they described this gentleman, who hailed from the Netherlands…the most bright light, a great man, and a friend to all, and it was very moving because when he lost his battle with cancer, he didn’t have a lot of family, and some of the community we’re connected to were able to cross swords and make it nice for his services and his funeral and take care of it properly…it’s a beautiful story so we’re honored to honor him. This is what he wanted to hear.”

After the first verse Ed shouts “…this is for you, Frans!” After the break, he tells a long story about going to visit his grandmother’s old house and meeting the people who live there now, saying he wished he had bought it back in the day to preserve it, but then he met the person who lives in his grandmother’s old room and they raised 5 kids there, and his pictures with them are shown on screen. The family is at the show and are shown on screen as well, very emotional, and Ed plays Throw Your Arms Around Me solo. Jeff has a Bulls jersey on. Ed runs off stage as Inside Job starts, only making it back just in time to sing. Mike has his head back and eyes closed for the whole intro. A Cubs “W” flag is shown afterwards, and Ed says if he got another tattoo he would get that on his forehead. Wishlist is played for the back, and there’s a huge crowd roar as a sign is shown that says “9th Bday, first show.” Not For You has the original album outro for the first time in a long time, no Modern Girl tag. The phone fireflies are out for Better Man, leading Ed to comment “…fuckin’ beautiful, man” during the song. Boom and Josh are mentioned afterwards, but Josh isn’t on stage, he’s down in the sound booth and has to come up and make an appearance. Mike goes out into the front row for the Alive solo. For the last song, Ed says “…let’s see what happens” and Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” returns for the first time since Wrigley 2016. As the song is closing, Ed shouts “Mikey’s alright! Jeff is alright! Matt is alright! Josh is alright! Stone is alright! Boom is alright! You are alright! Chicago’s alright! Chicago’s alright!”

Pearl Jam has long been renowned for starting shows with a slow burn. Tuesday at the first of a two-night stand at United Center, the band put a fresh twist on the tradition by kicking off a 150-minute set by playing four songs while seated on stools. The sequence established a cozy mood for a performance that transcended traditional notions of a rock concert and instead represented a deep-seated exchange rooted in community, collectivity and solidarity.

Making intimate connections with fans is nothing new for the band. But this particular event — the first area Pearl Jam appearance since August 2018, and the first outside of Wrigley Field since 2009 — conveyed the feeling that the group was hosting an extended family dinner for everyone inside the packed arena. Tales were told, recollections relayed, loves embraced, losses shared, indulgences granted, jokes told, advice dispensed, personal information divulged, guests introduced, changes chronicled. No story or move seemed off limits.

Vocalist-guitarist Eddie Vedder served as the banquet head. In a particularly empathic and reminiscent mood, the Evanston native repeatedly spoke about what Chicago meant to him and expressed gratitude with a heartfelt sincerity. For Vedder and Co., the unfiltered affair functioned as part celebration, part conversation, part home-away-from-home homecoming. And a chance to tighten its bonds with the faithful.

Pearl Jam, with Eddie Vedder on vocals, performs the first of two shows at the United Center on Sept. 5, 2023.

Three decades after the peak of so-called “grunge” — a catchall term for a style Pearl Jam never really embraced — the Seattle group remains the last major band standing from the movement. Other than Mudhoney, it endures as the only collective from that scene to avoid breakups, reunions and deaths. Except for cycling through drummers earlier in its career (Matt Cameron secured the spot in ’98), Pearl Jam primarily consists of the same crew that graced the Metro stage at the group’s initial Chicago show in July 1991.

Naturally, Pearl Jam is not the same band. Its productivity and visibility pale in comparison to its ’90s and ’00s heydays. During the past 10 years, the quintet released just two studio albums. It tapped the brakes on a once-torrid touring schedule that used to see the band spending most of its time on the road. A rumored LP could be forthcoming, though no new material surfaced Tuesday.

The crowd instead got treated to an array of deep cuts and live favorites. Liberated from the unwritten rule that musicians need to load up on hits when playing to the masses at a stadium, Pearl Jam kept things loose and unpredictable. It nearly goes without saying that the relationship the group continues to cultivate with fans affords it a creative license — to stray, surprise, experiment, err — that few other artists enjoy.

Pearl Jam in 2023 qualifies as a cult band with a devoted following. Its habits of changing up setlists and presenting shows without a backdrop so that people can sit behind and to the side of the stage, evoke those of the Grateful Dead. In another parallel, Vedder teased a few loyal folks in the front row that he sees them more than he sees his family.

For the 58-year-old singer, family and friends became interchangeable Tuesday, with each approached in reverent fashion. Vedder spoke at length about his aunt, who died recently, and about attending her memorial service. Her picture flashed on the two projection screens and Pearl Jam dedicated the shimmering “Light Years” to her memory.

Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam addresses the audience during a concert at the United Center on Sept. 5, 2023.

He allotted more time to praising his grandmother and her apartment, which he drove past Monday and, upon stopping, met families that currently reside at the building. Cue the photos of Vedder and his new pals on the screens, and an apropos solo cover of “Throw Your Arms Around Me.” As for a European fan who recently died that had traveled with fellow Pearl Jam die-hards? Feted like a beloved relative via a homage and spirited run through “Rearviewmirror.”

Chicago Blackhawks icon Chris Chelios, who inexplicably trod on stage in Evil Knievel attire, didn’t land a tribute. Yet like bygone local writer-historian Studs Terkel, the Chicago-set TV series “The Bear,” the “L” and the Cubs “W” flag, the former defenseman warranted a shoutout. An off-the-cuff rendition of Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” — punctuated with lead guitarist Mike McCready donning a jacket featuring the Rockford-based band’s logo — gave one of the area’s music legends its due.

Largely bypassing divisive topics, Pearl Jam focused on staying resolute in the face of challenges and refusing to back down or apologize. The ensemble tapped spiritual veins (the otherworldly drone of “Release”), disguised frightening reality as adventurous sci-fi (a howling “Quick Escape”), veered into electro-funk realms (the pulsing “Dance of the Clairvoyants”) and entertained punk fixations (a rattling “Gods’ Dice,” the urgent “Comatose”).

Guitarist Mike McCready of Pearl Jam performs at the United Center on Sept. 5, 2023.

Augmented by multi-instrumentalist Josh Klinghoffer and veteran touring keyboardist Boom Gaspar, the quintet displayed its usual rhythmic sensibility. Pronounced bass lines from Jeff Ament and the melodic soloing of McCready, who spent much of his time pacing a tight perimeter like an animal hemmed in by an invisible fence, sparked the arrangements. Pearl Jam only fell short on older fare (“Animal,” “Not for You”) that demanded a primal rage that, at this stage of the group’s career, sounded faded and overly polite.

There’s nothing amiss, however, with the band’s enthusiasm or chemistry. Despite muddy sonics that robbed detail and caused massed crescendos to become mush, Pearl Jam interacted like guys who still like being in the same room together. Vedder leaped off monitors, executed twirling jumps and managed impressions of Who mainstays Roger Daltrey (microphone cord twirl) and Pete Townshend (windmill guitar chords) — and held everything and everyone together.

Sporting a goatee and neck-length hair, Vedder still possesses a fair amount of his range, though age intruded on his falsetto. In excellent form, he strategically picked spots where to save his voice by bypassing certain parts or letting the audience serenade the band. His deliveries on aggressive songs often came across akin to jabs to the chest or punches to the gut; on meditative tunes, his signature moans, murmurs and rasp dominated.

Back in his old stomping grounds, Vedder and his band were all alright, they were alive. Actually, they were even better if only because they demonstrated an increasingly endangered trait in rock ‘n’ roll: courage.

“At least I’ve got the balls to (expletive) try it,” Vedder declared after announcing he’d derail “Gods’ Dice.” Words to live by for anyone, anywhere.

The gig marked Pearl Jam’s first concert in about a year. The band wrapped their 2022 tour last September in Denver.

Where Is Pearl Jam Playing Next?

Pearl Jam’s 2023 tour will continue with a second St. Paul performance, followed by stops in Chicago, Indianapolis, Ft. Worth and Austin. In total, the band will play nine shows during their brief trek.

Watch Pearl Jam Perform 'Indifference'

Frontman Eddie Vedder has tacked on some additional solo dates in the fall. He will headline day two of the Ohana Festival on Sept. 30 at Southern California’s Doheny State Beach. Foo Fighters , the Pretenders , the Killers and the War on Drugs are among the other artists playing at the three-day event. Vedder is one of the founders of the Ohana festival, which has been held annually since 2016.

Is Pearl Jam Working on New Music?

Pearl Jam have been in the studio with producer Andrew Watt , working on the follow-up to 2020’s Gigaton .

“Andrew is a total character,” guitarist Stone Gossard noted in 2022. “Really, like immediately, we were writing quickly – spontaneously. Bring in a riff. 'Let's knock it out.'”

More recently, Gossard revealed that the new album was “getting closer and closer” to being finished. “It’s gonna be a good one,” he said, adding that Watt is “the most hardcore Pearl Jam fan you’ll ever meet. He can play all of our songs and all of Soundgarden ’s songs back at us — better than we can play them!”

Pearl Jam bring deep cuts back to setlist for first gig of 2023

The band kicked things off with 'Indifference', which hadn't been their opener since 1994

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam played their first show of 2023 on Thursday in Minnesota, playing a 24-song setlist with more than a few surprises.

The band brought numerous songs back to the setlist that they hadn’t aired live in some time. They dusted off ‘Insignificance’ for the first time since 2016 and played ‘Love Boat Captain’ for only the second time in the last five years.

They also opened the show with ‘Indifference’, which hadn’t been played to kick off a Pearl Jam gig since 1994, and also performed ‘I’m Open’ and ‘Sometimes’.

Towards the end of the show frontman Eddie Vedder covered Tom Petty ‘s ‘Wildflowers’ before the rest of the band joined him for ‘Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town,’ ‘Go’, ‘Crazy Mary’, ‘Alive’ and ‘Yellow Ledbetter’.

Check out fan-filmed footage and the full setlist below:

Elsewhere, the band’s guitarist Jeff Ament gave an update recently on the band’s new album, saying that it “doesn’t feel like a record yet”.

Guitarist Stone Gossard confirmed in an interview last March  that work had begun on the follow-up to 2020’s   ‘Gigaton’  and that Andrew Watt, who has previously worked with  Justin Bieber , is behind the production desk this time around.

““The hardest part of [finishing] a record a lot of times is figuring out which songs go on the record and do we need to record another song and what’s the artwork and what’s the title and all that stuff,” he said.

However, he did say that “come September”, the band would regroup and “pick up those questions we have about where we’re at and we’re gonna ask those questions again”.
