The Perth Mint is going where no mint has gone before. (So to speak.)

Two silver dollar coins commmemorating   Star Trek: The Original Series  — one portraying the iconic Captain James T. Kirk as played by William Shatner, and the other depicting the fictional starship USS Enterprise —  are among the Perth Mint's February releases.

The Proof 1-ounce, .999 fine silver dollar coins are listed individually at $115 and as a pair at $230. They will be made available on Feb. 16, according to the Perth Mint's monthly product bulletin .

SOCIAL: Captain Kirk himself just took notice of Perth Mint’s Star Trek coins on Twitter

"The Captain James T. Kirk coin's reverse portrays a colour image of William Shatner as Captain James Tiberius Kirk as he appeared in Star Trek, against a representation of the  U.S.S. Enterprise  and the inscription CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK," the Perth Mint's online description reads.

"The  U.S.S. Enterprise  NCC-1701 coin's reverse is representative of the United Federation of Planets' logo and portrays a colour image of the  U.S.S. Enterprise  NCC-1701 flying through space as it appeared in the original Star Trek television series. The design includes the inscription STAR TREK THE ORIGINAL SERIES and U.S.S. ENTERPRISE NCC-1701," according to the Perth Mint.

Both coins feature the Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on their obverse along with the year 2015 and their monetary denomination.

The coins are issued as having legal tender status in Tuvalu. The Perth Mint will issue no more than 5,000 of the individually packaged coins, and no more than 1,500 of the two-coin sets will be issued.

Star Trek: The Original Series aired from 1966 to 1969 and spawned a number of motion pictures and spinoff programs including Star Trek: The Next Genration and Star Trek: Voyager .

The Perth Mint held a Star Trek coin launch on Jan. 30 at the 2015 World Money Fair in Berlin .

Perth Mint Coin Profiles – Tuvalu 2019 Star Trek: TOS – Kirk 1oz Silver Proof Coin

Perth Mint

This exciting new release depicts Captain James T. Kirk with the planet Jupiter .

Captain Kirk was immortalized by William Shatner in Star Trek: The Original Series and in seven feature films. He also voiced the Captain in the animated version of the series. Kirk became Starfleet’s youngest captain and gained a reputation for unconventional tactics that were nonetheless almost always successful.

In 2018, William Shatner suggested The Perth Mint design a Star Trek: The Original Series Kirk coin that included the planet Jupiter. The actor has since personally endorsed this release, declaring it to be “a lovely design filled with meaning”.

Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu .

The Perth Mint will release no more than 3,000 of the Star Trek: The Original Series – Kirk 2019 1oz Silver Proof Coin .

The coin’s reverse design portrays a colored representation of Captain Kirk on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 and the Star Trek: The Original Series logo. Visible from the ship’s viewpoint is the planet Jupiter and one of its many moons, a reference to Jupiter’s personal significance to William Shatner. The design also includes The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II , the monetary denomination, weight and fineness, and the 2019 year-date.

Presentation

The coin is presented in a Star Trek-branded classic display case with a clear lid. Packaged within a themed shipper, each coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

Designer(s):

Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was chosen to appear on the coinage of the United Kingdom in 1998. His design began to appear on collector coins that year and became widespread starting in 1999 ( View Designer’s Profile ).

Perth Mint artist Jennifer McKenna designed the reverse.

Iconic AC/DC frontman Bon Scott has been immortalised on a new collectable coin.

Four decades on from his death, the Perth Mint has paid tribute to the Australian rock legend, with the reproduction of his image on a 1oz 99.99 per cent silver proof coin.

The image on the coin – designed by Wade Robinson – is of the rock star shirtless, wearing a denim jacket and cut-off sleeves, and with a microphone in his hand.

Scott’s name is inscribed on the coin with the Lion Rampant overlaying it, which the Perth Mint said was an ode to his Scottish heritage.

Scott’s brother Derek Scott and his family visited the Perth Mint’s secure coining division to see the coin being struck and coloured.

Only 5000 coins are available. Picture: Perth Mint

Mr Scott said his brother would have been “rapt” with the coin.

“For somebody who never had two coins to rub together, the fact he’s actually got his image on a silver coin it’s unbelievable,” he said.

The Perth Mint’s general manager of minted products Neil Vance said it was an honour to produce a Bon Scott coin, especially because the star spent much of his early life growing up in Perth and Fremantle.

Scott’s name is inscribed on the coin with the Lion Rampant overlaying it, which the Perth Mint said was an ode to his Scottish heritage.

“There aren’t too many Australian rock stars as influential as Bon Scott was in his all too short life,” Mr Vance said.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
